3. FORMULATION
• Formulation is the process of arranging
what we want to say after we have
concept in the mind.
• The identification of formulation process
can be seen from slips of tongue like the
mistake that someone have in saying or
writing something.
• The slips of tongue are typographical
mistakes are normal in everyday
occurrences in our speaking and writing .
• Slips of tongue are in which an actual word
or phrase is created ,often with a
humorous twist to the meaning which was
intended . Building Blocks
4. GRAMMATICAL ENCODING
Grammatical encoding is an important aspect of taking the message generated
by the conceptualizer and turning it into language .
GRAMMATICAL
ENCODING INVOLVES
TWO SEPARATE BUT
RELATED COMPONENTS
FUNCTIONAL
PROCESSING
POSITIONAL
PROCESSING
5. FUNCTIONAL PROCESSING
The aim Of functional processing is to give the appropriate jobs to words that
will express the speakers intended meaning .
VERB={hunt}; SUBJECT = {cat}; singular, definite;
OBJECT= {mouse}; singular, definite; TIME= past
EXAMPLE:
The cat hunted the mouse.
Alternative
The mouse was hunted by the cat.
6. POSITIONAL
PROCESSING
In positional processing, the selected set of lemmas is organized into an
ordered string. As a part of this process constituent assembly creates a
sentence frame for the massage.
Example: The cat hunted the mouse.
(determiner) N1 V [past] (determiner) N2
(DETERMINER) {cat} [singular; definite] {hunt} [past]
(DETERMINER) {mouse} [singular; definite]
7. EVIDENCE FROM SPEECH ERRORS
Functional And Positional Processing
• EXAMPLE 1: this seat has a spring in it
this spring has a seat in it
• EXAMPLE 2: they must be too tight for you
you must be too tight for
• EXAMPLE 3: a floor full of holes
a hole full of floors (Fromkin 1973a)
∙ EXAMPLE 4: on a hot how are you soldering iron
on a sot holdering iron (Garrett 1980a)
8. HOW FORMULATION STAGE IN
LANGUAGE PRODUCTION RELATES TO
PSYCHOLINGUISTICS
Psycholinguistics, study of language processing mechanism.
Also defined as the study of the mental representations and processes involved
in production, comprehension and storage of spoken and written language .
FORMULATION PROCESS → Linguistic powerhouse of language production.
