How technology knowledge grew from constructing a media product
1. What you have learnt about
technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
2. My Initial technology knowledge
• As I began my media course I realised that my knowledge of
technology was not as vast as I initially thought, for example I could
surf social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter.
• Although, I had the ability to record music on Garage Band through
early experiences in school. And I was able to record videos and
capture images on Photo Booth which I would upload to social
networking sites Facebook and YouTube
• However, I was a novice technological equipment such as cameras,
and LED lights until I started the course.
• Since I have begun my AS media course I have gain much
experience and learnt much about how programs and equipment
work and discovered new equipment and program which has
allowed me to understand the important of both.
3. EQUIPMENT
• The Apple Macs are the computers that were sued
throughout to document our finding and to research
ideas and genres. Also to edit and blog, so it would be
an understatement to say that it they were needed.
• From using the Macs I learnt how to use many
different software and programmes which are unique
and only available on Apple products Photo Booth, and
Garage Band to name but a few.
• It was a crucial resource and they were quick and easy
to use as they were new and more developed, it would
have been very difficult to have produced a finished
Thriller opening without the Macs.
• The Macs were crucial also for my audience feedback
as I used Garage Band and Photo Booth to take
images record voice notes and create videos.
• Something which I found rather frustrated was the fact
that I was unable to move from one computer to
another as work only saved on one particular
computer.
4. EQUIPMENT
• I used detachable camera lights to allow me to mount and
remove the LED lights from the camera.
• During the making of the opening, me and my group
experimented with the 3 point lighting technique.
• This allowed me to learn about shadows and lighting and
how influential it can be to create ambiance through key,
fill and back lights.
• We used back light to create a silhouette of our antagonist
which made him mysterious and gave him edginess.
• I also realised that light does not have to be from LED lights
(artificial) but can also be from the natural daylight
(naturalistic).
5. EQUIPMENT
• One of the key developments throughout the course was the
transition of cameras that I used and experimented with.
• The DV camera was used to allow me to learn the
fundamental of recording with a digital camera. I learnt how
to insert and remove the DV tape into the camera and then
discovered how to upload the videos and footage onto the
computers.
• The DV camera was used whilst filming the preliminary task,
where I first experimented with the film techniques: match
on action, shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule
• For the filming of the actual thriller opening , the Canon DSLR
650D camera was used.
• It enabled me to film but also to capture still images for our
opening. And I learnt how to change the settings on the
camera so it is adapted for the appropriate use.
6. EQUIPMENT (CONTINUED…)
• THE Canon gave an unrivalled quality for our thriller
opening and was superior to all other camera that we used
one reason for this was the fact that it allowed its user to
focus and zoom in and out.
• All of this was done through the lens which I had to learn
to attach and detach.
• Using the Canon DSLR taught me that camera choice is vital
because it is a factor which can determine the quality of
your final product.
• The film camera were an alternative option to the previous
two cameras and was used for quick recording.
• The flip camera was mostly used when filming audience
feedback and research because of it ease of use.
7. PROGRAMS
• Our post production editing involved one program Imovie.
• I was surprised at the ease of use and capability of the program
which allowed me to insert music videos and still images to all
videos.
• The program was extremely reliable as it saved work automatically,
so I never had to work about having a back up plan.
• I learnt how to crop clips and adjust the speed of a clip to make it fit
within my concept.
• I was also able to add text, titles and credits to clips which I believed
helped the film to look more realistic and professional.
• Furthermore, I also discovered how to add non -diegetic sounds to
the videos which could help create an atmosphere.
• Overall, I learnt how to successful order a film and how important
the right program can be to edit.
8. PROGRAMS
• I used Garage band to record my audience
feedback for my thriller.
• Garage band was a program I already knew
how to use, so I knew I could use it for voice
recording which I could then import into
Imovie.
9. PROGRAMS
• Blogger was extremely useful in aiding me to create my
very first blog and a great instrument for a novice.
• I learnt how to make an account for a blog and the site
enabled me to make post and then add images and even
images, Slideshares and Prezis all to that same post.
• Blogger taught me how to creatively and interestingly blog
information to keep readers interested.
• It has allowed me to feel like true blogger and build my
confidence and knowledge of what blogging is.
• Blogger was a easy program to use and allowed me to play
around with fonts and colours, even enabling me to
highlight.
10. PROGRAMS
• I was already familiar with YouTube before
creating a film opening but that was really only to
watch videos.
• Using YouTube taught me how to upload videos
onto my channel. We used YouTube to upload the
preliminary task, and final thriller opening.
• I learnt also how to add tags and notes which
acted as annotations which allowed us to explain
our reasoning and thinking behind particular
decisions.
11. PROGRAMS
• Slideshare is a program which allows the user
to upload PowerPoint presentations online.
• So it was crucial as without it I would not have
been able to upload presentations.
• I learnt how to share the presentations on
Facebook and Twitter
12. PROGRAMS
• Before I had started the course I had never heard
of Prezi.
• However, from the first time I used it felt instantly
familiar and easy to use and very interactive.
• The transitions between the slides make the work
look more attractive and interesting especially
when animations are used.
• Prezi allowed me to construct my work in a
structured ay which really helped me to present
the ideas that I had.
