The Legacy Of East Hill
Community Windshield Paper
I.Community Core
The history of East Hill is authentic old established homes and businesses throughout the narrow, shaded, quiet streets. One of the main historical
landmarks is a build called Sacred Heart Hospital, which is now known as the 'Old Sacred Heart', "Pensacola Hospital, now known as the historic
Sacred Heart Hospital, opened in September 1915 as the first and oldest Catholic hospital in Florida. The Daughters of Charity, a religious order dating
back to 1633 also dedicated to care for the poor and the sick, invested over $400,000.00 into building and opening this facility. The Daughters
community was started originally in France by St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac" (National register). On early mornings people walk
/run with their dogs, walk children to school, and sit outside on their porches to have their morning coffee with the birds chirping. When I
approached an elderly woman, who looked as though she was lost and wandering, I asked her if she lived in the area and she replied 'yes'. This
woman was named Emma Hall, I went on asking her many other questions due to her willingness and engagement in conversation, it seemed as
though she enjoyed the surprising conversation that offset her normal morning routine. She said that she has been living in East Hill for over 50 years
and not a lot of structural or environmental changes took place within that time. "They built a baseball field and added a few new businesses like

Economic Impact Analysis on a High–Speed Railway System for Central Florida
Introduction
High–speed railway (HRL) systems have been used primarily over in such countries as Japan since 1964 and France since 1984. Recently the United
States has generated interest in the high–speed railway as well. The proposed system would stretch from Miami through Orlando and end in the St.
Petersburg/Tampa area. With bullet trains operating at top speeds of 220 miles an hour, the express travel time from downtown Miami to Orlando
would take approximately 2.5 hours. Intercity travelers (trips between metropolitan regions) along with longer–distance commuters would enjoy the
benefits of a system designed to connect with existing rail, air, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Significance Of The Second Seminole War
In order to understand the significance of the Second Seminole War, one must first examine the First Seminole War. Frustrated with Seminole
protection of runaway slaves, Andrew Jackson and more than three thousand men entered northern Florida in 1816 and began to decimate Seminole
populations. Despite most of these campaigns being unsanctioned by the United States government and protested by the British and the Spanish,
Jackson was received as a war hero throughout the nation. The Adam–Onis Treaty of 1819 officially transfesrred ownership ofFlorida from Spain to the
United States (a major political victory for the United States at the time), and the deportation of the Seminoles out of the newly acquired land became
of the utmost importance in 1821.
After tensions between indigenous tribes and white settlers intensified, the United States government approached the Seminoles in an attempt to begin
the deportation process. The first course of action was to not only quell the conflicts between the two parties in Florida, but to begin to encroach on the
Seminole land and force them into reservations. This would make it all the easier when it came time to begin official removal of the Seminoles.
The Treaty of Moultrie Creek in 1823 stipulated that the Seminoles would surrender any land claims within Florida in exchange for official protection
by the United States, monetary funding, and a large reservation located in central Florida. The location was designated far enough inland

Tourism Types Of Tourism
DEMAND ELEMENTS
Miami is one of the most popular cities visited by all types of tourists from around the world. Visitors mainly travel by air and arrive at Miami
International Airport. In 2016, Miami welcomed 15.7 million overnight visitors (i.e. tourists) from around the world. Those tourists spent $25 billion,
with 70% of that money coming from international visitors (Mody, 2017). Many people also embark on cruises from PortMiami to destinations
around the world. Whether the visitor is coming to spend a few days in the city or is "driving–through" for a cruise, most tourists prefer to visit during
October through April, when the weather is less humid (Maxwell, 2016).

In 2016, two–thirds of travellers used hotels as their primary choice of lodging; however, this number has been decreasing as peer–to–peer residence
renting is rapidly growing, mainly due to AirBnB, as shown in Appendix D.
Satisfaction with Stay and Most Liked Features
Overall, most of the visitors to the Greater Miami area report high levels of satisfaction. 98.1% of both domestic visitors and international visitors
were very or extremely satisfied of their overall trip (see Appendix E for a figure showing visitor satisfaction in 2016).
The most liked features in 2016 were different based on the types of tourists. Shopping was a favourite feature of international visitors, while only
10% of domestic visitors noted this as a liked feature (GMCVB, 2016). Weather and beaches remained a top feature of the area for both international
and domestic visitors, followed by the famous Ocean Drive and restaurants. Appendix F shows the distribution of the most liked features by both types
of tourists, as well as the areas and main attractions visited by those visitors.
Expenditures
One reason Miami is known to be one of the best destinations in the world is the wide range of opportunities available for every budget. Whether the
tourist has a low budget or an unlimited budget, Miami can respond to all of the visitor's needs.

Letter : Hello Central Florida
Hello Central Florida!
The September finances are closed and the Southeast Region and our Central Florida market had another strong showing. Our total revenue for the
SER was up more than $65M compared to the same time last year. The Central Florida market contributed to the SER total by posting a strong
revenue improvement of $7.9M YTD over the previous year's YTD total. Our market continues to be led by healthy revenue growth in Residential (up
$5M), Cox Business (up $1.7M) and Cox Media (up $1.2M). All posted favorable year–to–date revenue gains over previous year YTD totals.
Unfortunately, Our Total Operating Expenses were up by $2.2M over this same time last year. However, our CentralFlorida Operating Cash Flow
(OCF) was up by more than $2.2M over the same period last year. Our Total PSU saw strong month to month growth, improving from 215,519K to
218,801K. That increase was supported by PSU gains in every category, including phone. Keep selling those larger "baskets" and increasing our
PSUs! Homelife is approaching our 1000th customer in the market. Through September we had 976 CHL PSUs. We really kept the focus through Go

Analysis Of Truman 's ' The Truman Show '
The Truman Show is centred on a man–made island called SeaHaven where a man named Truman Burbank has been televised without his knowledge
since birth. The show is a 24 hour live tv show where every aspect of Truman's life is shown. As Truman grows older he begins to notice unsual
events that leads him to believe that there is something incongruent with what people are telling him and what he experiences in his day to day life.
As Truman begins to test the boundaries he realizes that the town seems to revolve around him and his desire to escape comes to an all time high.
Eventually Truman begins on a journey to escape his virtual reality. Despite the boundaries that the director throws at him he eventually escapes and
will try to find his way in the real world. This movie made me sympathize for Truman being that he has no privacy and is oblivious to his lack of
freedom. This movie shows how it is possible to create an "ideal" community and how New Urbanism can be created and maintained.
New Urbanism essentially promotes an inclusive community that is close in proximity, which the ccreator of the Truman Show creates. There is many
positives that comes with New Urbanism most being that all aspects of the city would be in walking distance which results in reduced cars and mixed
housing. New Urbanism brings on increased communication and interaction between individuals which is facilitated by a city centre. Mumford writes
about how a city is "a theatre of social action" (CR page

Defining a Hurricane Essay
Defining a Hurricane
A hurricane is a tropical storm that has winds of 74 miles per hour or more. The winds can sometimes reach up to 155 miles per hour. Another
characteristic of hurricanes is their massive size that measures from 200 to 300 miles in diameter. In the center of each storm there is what is called the
eye of the storm (Image to Right). The eye of the storm is usaually between 20–30 miles and is the calmest part of the storm. Winds here may only be
74 miles per hour. Some hurricanes can last for two weeks or more over open water and can run a path across the entire Eastern Seaboard.
Hurricanes that develop in the Northern Hemisphere rotate in a counterclockwise motion and in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some hurricanes can even develop in the winter time, but that rarely happens, only three have been recorded since 1886.
Hurricanes are not only very violent storms but they are also very dangerous. The primary dangers of the storm are the rain/flooding, high winds, the
occasional tornado, flying debris from buildings and nature (i.e. trees), and the storm surges . Storm surges can be between 50 to 100 miles high.
These surges may be even more dangerous than any of the other hazards because they can wipe out an entire community near the ocean. Nine out of
ten deaths are caused by such surges and annually 17 people die from hurricanes in the United States alone. The deadliest hurricane in United States
history was at Galveston Island, called the Texas Storm of 1900. It was a Category 4 hurricane and there was more than 6,000 deaths occured with this
storm.

Regional Political Sub Cultures : The State Of Florida
Regional political sub–cultures are the trends people in specific regions of the country have toward their government–how it should function and what
they feel it should achieve. As far as the state of Florida is concerned, based on recent voter turnout and demography it can be concluded that the state
is divided sub–culturally and has been in flux since the theory of political culture began.
In order to understand these sub–cultures, one must first comprehend Elazar's political culture typology. In the 1960s, Elazar reasoned that the United
States' values and attitudes could be identified through three political cultures which were formed based on the ideals of immigrant ancestors and also
through migration patterns throughout the country. These three cultures–moralistic, individualistic and traditionalistic–align with the three primary
political parties in the United States–democratic, independent and republican. He also found that when divided into thirds–north, central, and south–the
country would classify itself, the north being moralistic, central being individualistic and south being traditionalistic based on the similar values and
outlooks of the people that settled in these areas.
That being said, the state of Florida, being a southern state, may be expected to be a traditionalistic state. However, based on recent gubernatorial and
national elections, it can be deduced that the state of Florida is in fact one of the most narrowly divided states sub–culturally and

To more effectively utilize available time and resources, an area in Hillsborough County with the densest population of the target demographic was
selected. The neighborhood of East Tampa was selected as the best site to initiate the AHRRP. There are approximately 16,000 residents residing in
East Tampa and, 84 percent of the residents are Black (Florida Center for Community Design and Research, School of Architecture, University of South
Florida, 2011).
There are many socioeconomic factors that impact the health status of Blacks living in East Tampa. The per capita income for East Tampa is $11,786
which is less than half of the per capita income for Hillsborough County (Florida Center for Community Design and Research et al., 2011). A
windshield survey of the community was conducted that assessed the community core, community subsystems, and community perceptions using the
guidelines outlined by Anderson and McFarlane (2015). While conducting the survey, it was noted the much of the available housing was in disrepair

My Last Day In High School
It was a Thursday night in the middle of March, as I pull into the school parking lot. I can see that there are mounds of suitcases and over stuffed
duffle bags lined up on the faint lit sidewalks. I jumped out of the car with eagerness when I saw my friends waiting for me by the curb line. We leap
with joy because; we knew that this was going to be one of the best trips of our final year in high school. The trip meant so much to us; we needed to be
away from stress filled environment that is known as school.
Before we left the school we needed to get our check off lists completed. My bag is checked by the parental security, to ensure that I'm not bringing
unneeded items onto the school provided trip. After that I rushed to grab my obnoxious hefty garment bag, sticky tan buckled shoes, and my make–up
paraphernalia. I look into each of the items to ensure every single piece I needed is in order, so I can be ready to board the buses. The garment bag
contains the Earth sparkled dress, leotard, and shredded tights, with a few mystery items. The shoes need to have more stickiness for the next wear,
so I placed a bulky roll of duct tape in the bottom of the bag along with the shoes. The make–up kit had plenty of sparkles spilled everywhere, along
with the eye lash extensions that should have been washed two or three performances ago. The hair accessories for the performance were also included
into the overloaded kit of supplies.
I rushed back outside from the back stage doors;

Informative Speech : Attention Getter For The Walt Disney...
Topic: Walt Disney World
Organization: Topical
Specific Purpose: To show that Walt Disney World is a family
–oriented experience.
I.Introduction
A.Attention Getter: As Walt Disney once stated, "To all who come to this happy place, Welcome. Here age relives fond memories of the past, and
here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Hoping that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to the entire world (IMDb, n.d.)."
B.Relevance: Walt Disney created Disneyland and Disneyworld because he believed that people who rushed to grow up were selling themselves short.
He invented the theme parks in order to bring out the inner child in you, no matter your age.
C.Credibility Statement: I feel as if everyone here was ecstatic to go away to college and start their life as an adult. But why? As Walt Disney said,
"who said we had to grow up? (IMDb, n.d.)."
D.Central Idea: Disneyworld is known worldwide as the "happiest place on earth."
E.Initial Preview: We will learn how Disneyworld was created, and how it became such a universal phenomenon through annual events and their most
famous attractions.
II.Body
Before we can discuss how Walt Disneyworld became a household name, we need to understand how it was developed.
A.First of all, Disneyworld begun with Disneyland in California. However, Walt Disney started developing Walt Disney World to give the Eastern side
of the United States the same joy as he did in California.
1)As stated from Palm Beach Post, in 1964 Walt Disney quietly bought 27,000 acres of the Central Florida swampland for "The Florida Project,"
known today as Disneyworld. (Frias, 2011)
2)The heart of Disneyworld was designed to be named "Experimental Prototype City of Tomorrow." According to "History of Disney World" from
lovetoknow.com, the park built its own energy plants, food centers, laundry, and their own airstrip to become the "self–sufficient and self–governed
world" envisioned by Walt Disney. (Santiago, n.d.).
3)Sadly Walt Disney was not present for the opening of Walt Disneyworld Florida, due to his death from lung cancer. However, his brother Roy
carried out "The Florida Project" naming the park Walt Disney World in honor of his brother. On October 1st of

Texas Lottery and Education
Texas Lottery and Education Funding
Destinee Caster
Abstract
Texans believe that participating in the Texas Lottery helps the Texas Education Foundation but little do they know; how much money actually goes to
the Texas Education Foundation. The effect of the Texas Lottery is causing more of a negative impact on Texans than the Education Foundation is
benefiting.
The Texas Lottery negatively impacts the people that play the lottery and the programs that are supposed to benefit from the proceeds. Because of the
big dream of winning, the lottery has taken a toll on Texans. "People believe that the Texas Lottery is their only chance to strike it rich" (Buckland,
2010). There is not near enough money going towards the Texas Education... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Texans voted for a constitutional amendment that allowed funds of the lottery to be dedicated to education funding. But the Texas Legislature
examined Lottery funds of other states including California and Florida who had dedicated lottery money to the education and discovered that these
states had less money for education. Critics from this era believed that states without lotteries collected fewer taxes than the states with lotteries.
(Heines & Tinsley 1997).
In 2009, a great amount of the stimulus funds were designated for education spending. The 91 billion dollars that was supported by this fund did not
cover the total federal spending on education of the years 2008 to 2009 which summed up to be 667 billion dollars. An estimation of 570 billion
dollars was not supported by the total education bill of federal spending. It costs an estimated 35 billion dollars to cover kindergarten through twelfth
grade on a yearly basis. (Voice,2011).
"Texas law says lottery proceeds are supposed to go toward education" (Oberg 2011). The lottery has only given one billion dollars every year to
Texas Schools since 1998, but since lottery sales have become greater, the lottery has not been giving more money to the Texas schools. Even with the
lottery earnings increasing the amount of money applied towards the Education Fund has not shown the difference of cash increase. One of the reasons
why education is not

What Do Brevard County Residents Believe The Environmental...
Research Question– To what extent do Brevard County residents believe the Environmental Protection Agency's laws, in place, are effectively written
and enforced to protect wetlands from landfills?
On Florida's Space Coast in Brevard County, the main landfill that is located on Sarno Road, is expected to exceed capacity within the next five years.
Another large landfill, located in the north area of the county is expected to exceed capacity within the next twenty years. Because of the current need

The Shootings Of Mass Shootings
Since 1982 there has been at least 85 mass shootings in the US, since the year 2006 there has been 48 alone. The first mass shooting was on
September 5th, 1949 in a neighborhood and the killer was Howard Unruh killing 13 people including 3 children. In the recent mass shootings there has
been the Pulse nightclub in Orlando Florida on June 12, 2016 and the shooting in Las Vegas that happened last week. Between these two mass
shootings they are ranked the most deadliest mass shootings in US history, with Orlando killing 49 and wounding 58 and Las Vegas killing 58 and
wounding 489. The mind behind the Orlando Shooting was Omar Matten. He was 29 years old when he decided to open fire on the nightclub. Omar
was born in Queens, New York but later moved to Florida. He had trouble in school and often got into fights, which later on got him arrested. ISIS
took responsibility for Omar's killing claiming to be gay hatred. While In the Las Vegas shooting the mind behind that was Stephen Paddock, 64 year

Memories Of My Life
My childhood is full of many fond memories. When I think back to some of the earliest times, I can only remember tiny sparks and flickers of
certain moments. However, at a certain age, I began to more vividly remember events in my life. The first family vacation I can fully recall was a trip
my family took to Disney World in Orlando, Florida. When I found out about the trip it was Christmas morning. My brother and I each got an
envelope, which encased tickets to Disney World. I was ecstatic to go to Disney World because it was a childhood dream come true for me! When
the day of the trip arrived, we stuffed all of our luggage into the back of our minivan and began our trip to the airport in Charlottesville, Virginia.
We waited three long hours for our flight to leave Charlotteville, but we finally got onto the plane. I had a feeling of butterflies in my stomach as I
waited for the plane to take off. I sat next to my dad, and he held my hand to take away the nerves. From above the clouds, everything looked
miniature, and I remember feeling like a giant. We flew from Charlottesville, Virginia to Charlotte, North Carolina. At the airport in Charlotte, our
flight to Orlando was delayed. We waited an eternity, and I wasn't surprised to find that it was dark outside when we boarded our plane. We flew
through a small city in Georgia, and all of the lights resembled a cluster of glowing stars. We reached Orlando, Florida around 12:30 AM, and our

Persuasive Essay On Human Trafficking
With everything that happens in the world, one tends to wonder if we are doing all that we can to protect ourselves and each other. Are we doing
enough to protect ourselves and our loved ones from Human Trafficking? Yes, there are programs to help raise awareness in regards to human
trafficking, but there are so many people, children and young women especially who are falling victim to this horrifying, scary crime. What can we do?
What can our country...our states...our cities do to protect us from becoming a victim to human trafficking? Human trafficking is similar to slavery, it's
pretty much slavery, just in a different form. I think that in the back of our minds we know how dangerous and terrifying this can be. However, I don't

Question Two. Ed Organization Task Functions Are A Set
Question two
ED organization task functions are a set of strategies needed to achieve short and long term goals. Generally, task functions include identifying
community problems, providing technical and analytical assistance, determining the resources necessary to meet the economic development needs of a
situation, developing networks among individuals and institutions, and stimulating interaction among diverse groups to achieve common objectives (J,
Leigh, and Blakely 2013, p. 108)
The Beacon Council's work lines up with what we know about the task functions of ED organizations in many aspects. President and CEO Larry K.

Williams, Beacon Council president and CEO, the diversity of Miami–Dade County's industries and economy is already a strong advantage for
attracting and keeping businesses (Wooldridge, 2016), and the educational environment encourages entrepreneurship.
The book advised analyzing employment data with a location quotient, a ratio of industries represented locally to one of a reference economy. This is a
valuable equation for determining industry growth at a fixed period. When the OCOG chose target industries for Miami, the specialized index would
have assisted analysts in predicting future economic changes and which sectors will provide the most employment opportunities across all skill and
income levels. As discussed in the Cincinnati, Ohio Cluster Case study, after the LQ, analysts would determine the occupational LQ to assess the skill
base of the current workforce. Measuring job growth rates by sector and comparison with national trends would predict areas with healthy economies
and those expected to grow. Furthermore, cluster identification uses input/output analysis and local and national reports to unmask growing industries
and relate dependency or competitiveness between businesses while identifying industries statistically inclined to grow.
Question five
Of the planning approaches outlined in the course text pages 123–129, the OCOG appears to address contingency planning, which is interactive, and

Gambling: the Problems and History of Addiction,...
Recently there have been a lot of studies on the subject of gambling and games play. The average uninformed individual might wonder "Why, it
really is not that big of a deal?" and think that it is just a small poker game or a little bet over a sporting event. There are so many more aspects to
gambling than just the little games and bets. That is just a fraction of all of the problems and crime it can be connected to. Now there are also great
perks to having some forms of gambling, such as lotteries. The lotteries help out by contributing to government programs such as education, military,
etc. To help people understand gambling and games play it is necessary that they learn about the history, the viewpoints, and the cold hard facts....

He sued the Washington D. C. government, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the plaintiff and they were forced to pay the one–hundred thousand

Pennsylvania and Massachusetts had not prohibited gambling and game playing from 1840 to 1860. Gambling would return, however, in a bigger
way than before. Gambling exploded back onto the scene around the late 1880's near the end of the Civil War. This was known as the second
wave called National Lotteries. The south needed a way to pay for all of the reconstructing it would need, after the damages suffered during the war.
There were a variety of things that needed to be fixed such as; roads, bridges, school buildings, and all of the other buildings and institutions that had
suffered damage during the war. Desperate for a way to raise money, southern legislatures let private operators conduct lotteries to raise these greatly
needed funds. Lotteries were different this time as they were held on a national level instead of a local level. The southern lotteries sold out tickets to
people all over the nation. A very popularlottery was held in Louisiana and was called "The Serpent". The reason this lottery was so popular was
because it was held on the national level. Everyone from anywhere in the

Public Education Essay
Public Education
Governor Jeb Bush initiated the nation's boldest voucher experiment in June of 1999 when he signed into law his Opportunity Scholarship Program.
Florida is the first in the nation with a statewide plan allowing state–paid tuition for children in "F" graded schools to attend private schools or other
non–failing schools. Opponents claim that giving parents the choice to use state education funds at private schools could end up bankrupting the public
education system so many children rely upon. Proponents of vouchers argue the voucher program will give parents a way to help children trapped in
failing schools. Matthew Berry, a staff attorney with the Washington, D.C. based Institute for Justice, believes, "As... Show more content on

new system involving truancy, discipline, and safety (Voucher and Accountability). Social promotion has been eliminated and school districts must
consider alternative placement for students retained two or more years. Teachers and administrators disagree with many aspects of this plan.
Last summer, two schools, A.A. Dixion and Spencer Bibbs Elementary, were the first schools to qualify for the voucher program. These two schools

Florida Vs. North Carolina
Florida vs. North Carolina Legislature Comparison Paper
I chose these two states to compare because they are the states I have lived in throughout my life and are significant to me. I was born in Wilmington,
North Carolina and lived there until I was 10 years old. My step–father received a job offer in Islamorada, Florida and we decided to move. I lived
there until I graduated high school, following which I came to Orlando to go to college.
Elections are a major aspect of the State Government, with new representatives of the elections board being elected every four years in North
Carolina and eight years in Florida. As far as impact on term limits, there's not a problem with having no limit on terms in Florida because if the
representative is doing a good job then it would be acceptable to have them stay in office. Corruption or abuse of power aren't nearly as big of
issues because the power of State legislatures lacks severely in comparison to federal power, so typically corrupt officials wouldn't want to stay in the
state department. The Florida Department of State's Division of Elections provides administrative help to the Secretary of State, Florida's Chief
Election Officer, to ensure that Florida has just, prompt, and accurate elections. There is also a Director's office whose mission is to provide statewide
coordination and direction for the interpretation and enforcement of election laws, and to provide supervision to the Bureaus in the Division. The

The Seminole Essay
The Seminole
"As the United States is a nation made up of people from many nations, so the
Seminole is a tribe made up of Indians from many tribes." (Garbarino 13) The
Seminole are the indigenous people living in southeastern America. They lived in what is now Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina,
Tennessee, and
Mississippi. The Seminole had a Muskogean language of the Hokan–Siouan stock.
(Bookshelf) The Indian tribes found in the southeast were the Creek, Choctaw,
Chickasaw, Cherokee, Yuchi, Yamassee, Apalachicola, Timucua, and Calusa. The southeastern Indians were described by the Spanish as being tall
with complexions ranging from olive, to brownish. The Indians in the mountainous regions were described ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although these plants grow plentifully, the Seminoles lived more by hunting and gathering. It was easier to hunt and fish because the woodlands and
rivers were filled with an abundance of game. The Indians also gathered founds that were found in the environment, like berries, nuts, tubers, and seeds.
(Seminole 626)
The jobs of gathering and growing plants were doled out to the women. They also had to prepare and cook the food that the men obtained. Most of
the time, they baked boiled, or broiled the food. The women also preserved the food that they collect, such as plums and persimmons. (Garbarino 17)
The men usually helped where there was heavy and intensive work to be do be done, like clearing land and harvesting, but the men's main jobs were to
hunt, fish, and battle.
(Seminole Indians 290) The men hunted animals for their hides in addition to their meats. The most hunted for animals were: deer, squirrels, rabbits,
raccoons, bears, turkeys, ducks, and geese. The Indians also ate alligator meat, turtle meat, shellfish, and fresh and salt–water fish. (Garbarino 15)
The Indians lived in villages that ranged in size from 20 to 100 houses and in population from 100 to more than one thousand. The homes were most
likely to be built around a square or town plaza. The central area of the square was left for ceremonial purposes. The chief's house, a meeting hall,

An Analysis of Shirley Jackson's 'The Lottery' and...
Shirley Jackson "The Lottery"
Shirley Jackson's short story "The Lottery" depicts life in a provincial American town with rigid social norms. Mr. Summers symbolizes everything that
is wrong with the town; he represents blind adherence to ritual, social rigidity, and resistance to change. His name corresponds with the seasonal setting
of "The Lottery," too, drawing attention to the importance of his character in shaping the theme of the story. Summers is in charge of the central motif
of the story, the lottery that takes the life of a human being. A predecessor to The Hunger Games, Jackson's "The Lottery" shares in common with its
modern counterpart a theme of how groupthink places a stranglehold on both individuals and whole communities.
As part of his duties as lottery manager, Summers controls the black box where all the names are placed. None of the townspeople question the
insanity of the lottery, and in fact, they revere it as if it were a sacred tradition. It has achieved fetish status. Thus, Jackson draws a close parallel
between the ritual of the lottery and the religious rituals that characterize life in small town America. In so doing, Jackson connects herself with
Nathaniel Hawthorne, whose writing critiqued small town puritan New England life and its rigid adherence to religious dogma. In "The Lottery," the
people resist change just as much as their symbolic priest (Mr. Summers) does. Mr. Summers actually wants to upgrade the box, but the people do not

The History of the Seminole War in Florida
Throughout history there has been many wars that had taken place.
Wars happen because societies can come across conflict, different opinions, or simply people on country may be interested in anothers land or
resources. A war that can relate to this is the second Seminole War which first began in the 19th century. This war started because of discrimination
over the Native American people and the drive to have them relocate for their land.
After many attempts and one war before the second seminole war America realized they really need to demand changes and take action. The European
Americans, American government and President Andrew Jackson felt that it was necessary to relocate the Seminoles from North of Lake Okeechobee
to the west of the Mississippi river. The whites had intentions to remove all seminoles just so they can have the rich soil. Andrew Jackson decided to
take action and divide Florida into two counties.
What was once known to be West Florida was suddenly called Escambia county and what was once known as Easy Florida was know St. Johns
County. Andrew Jackson had suddenly left Pope DuVal to be the Florida leader. Once he became the leader of florida, it was officially known as
territory on March, 30, 1822. When northern settlers started intertwining with the Seminoles they did not get along. President Jackson felt it was best
to relocate the Indians.

In recent years, the federal aid system has tripled in numbers in over 25 years. Some federal aid programs can range from a giant billion to a more

basis. There was initial struggle when the federal aid system began to expand many believe that it would be difficult to opt out of new federal aid

The Florida Department of Children and Families provides services and assistance to a group or to an individual who may need income, and resources

Descriptive Essay About Marco Island
When I close my eyes and imagine, I can still clearly hear the gentle splash of the waves lapping the shoreline, and feel the slight ocean breeze whizz
through my hair, sending it flying in every direction. During the frigid and dreary months of Missouri's winter, there is one place in particular that my
heart longs to be. Marco Island, Florida. When most people think of a luxurious vacation, they imagine crystal clear water, snowy white sands, and a
miraculous five star hotel. Marco Island is no Bora Bora, but to me it's the most enchanting small town that values simplicity and offers pure bliss
to anyone coming to visit. My father proposed the idea of vacationing on Marco Island before the summer of 2016 after hearing multiple people
rave to him about the breathtaking beaches and unforgettable experiences. My mother and I had never heard of Marco Island, but after five short
minutes of browsing through images online of the picturesque island, we were instantly captivated and could not wait to see it for ourselves. After
what seemed like an eternity of waiting for our trip to commence, we finally arrived on the dreamy island. Rather than staying at a hotel, we rented a
beach house that was supposedly only a six minute walk from Marco Island Beach. While pulling up to the magnificent home, I was holding back tears
of joy. The pale grayish–blue house looked like it had jumped right out of a framed photograph hanging up in the waiting room of a doctor's office.

Global temperatures on the Earth's surface have increased by 1.1 degrees Fahrenheit during the last century, faster than any time in the last 1000 years
(Rauber 41). Consequently, the 1990s was the warmest decade in the last 1000 years ("Global Warming"). As humans emit fossil fuels, greenhouse
gasses slowly warm the Earth's atmosphere ("EPA Global"). This gradual process is known asglobal warming. As glaciers begin to melt, sea levels rise
and coastal areas in Florida may suffer immense losses ("Beach Erosion"). Florida's tourist economy may also suffer a tremendous loss, as well as
agriculture ("Florida Scientists"). With a warmer atmosphere, disease will spread quicker and human health will be threatened throughout the state

The production of citrus, sugarcane, and tomatoes adds billions of dollars to Florida's economy ("Florida Scientists"). Global warming's effects on
agriculture will vary by location and on the specific crop (Alvarez et al). Warming temperatures andcarbon dioxide fertilization will increase citrus
production by about 6 to 20 percent in Florida over the next 40 to 50 years (Alvarez et al). Although citrus will benefit in the short–term, its
productivity in the long–run will suffer (Alvarez et al). Citrus yields will begin to decrease once temperatures have gone past the nominal growing
range and soil moisture has been reduced from the heat (Alvarez et al). Sugarcane is a $437 million industry in Florida and is mostly located in
Palm Beach County ("Southeast"). Global warming may severely impact the production and sales of sugarcane ("Southeast"). If sea levels rise 18
to 20 inches, flooding will intensify and decrease sugarcane yields due to nutrient pollution problems (Alvarez et al). This will decrease sugarcane
growth by about 20 percent ("Southeast"). Florida is also the nation's leader in tomato production (Alvarez et al). However, a warming atmosphere
could decrease the state's tomato production by about 44 percent as a result of shortened growth cycles (Alvarez et al). Global warming will definitely
lead to changes in how and where Florida farmers grow crops ("Southeast"). With some crops these changes

Unfortunately, canker is not the only disease growers have to worry about. Citrus greening disease, also commonly referred to as Huanglongbing, is a
much newer disease to Florida than citrus canker. Although the bacterium, Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus, has been an issue in China since the
1900's, it did not arrive in the US until 2005 ("Citrus Greening"). The disease is spread through its primary vector, an insect called the Asian citrus
psyllid. Symptoms, which include yellow mottling of leaves, small, green, and misshapen fruit, and poor yields, may not appear until several years
after a tree is infected. Citrus greening is such an important issue currently because, according to the United States Department of Agriculture, "other
than tree removal, there is no effective control once a tree is infected and there is no known cure for the disease" ("Citrus Greening"). To date, revenue
loss caused by citrus greening disease exceeds $3.6 billion ("Citrus Greening"). Although importing a race of orange that is resistant to greening may be

Temperature Analysis Of Temperature During The Summer
Temperature Analysis
The expectations I held when first given this assignment are echoed in the conceptual models presented in the guidance document: locations situated
close to the ocean ought to exhibit cooler temperatures during the summer months while maintaining slightly warmer temperatures during the winter
and that more inland locations should display slightly higher temperatures within the summer time but lower temperatures during the winter months.
This expectation was largely influenced by the knowledge I have incurred while living in a coastal area: wind and surf carry cooler air to the coast
during the summer while carrying warmer air to land during the winter. Upon reviewing the recorded temperatures within the six ... Show more content

As these locations have similar enough latitudes, 27.9 and 28 degrees north respectively, it is unlikely that the results are skewed. Continuing to
follow the notion proposed within the given conceptual model, the southern stations showed that the inland city of Devil's Garden experienced
substantially colder winters compared to the winter time temperatures seen in Miami Beach. Encountering an average winter temperature of 51.4
degrees, Devil's Garden is approximately 12 degrees cooler than Miami Beach's average minimum winter temperature of 63.6. These locations,
however, did not exhibit such a large disparity in summer time temperatures with Devil's Garden's maximum average displayed at approximately 92
degrees and Miami Beach's maximum average displaying exactly 87 degrees. Upon further investigation, it appears that the discrepancy in average
temperatures between the locations is perhaps caused by a sizable difference in latitudes with Devil's Garden situated at 38.8 degrees north compared
to Miami Beach situated at 25.8 degrees north. This divergence is the most likely responsible for Miami Beach's high summer temperatures as areas in
lower latitudes often experience warmer weather in addition to the fact that the beach is located closer to the equator. To compare coastal stations, it is
clear that the second conceptual model is reasonably correct when asserting

Essay on The Florida Everglades
Introduction
Maintaining ecological diversity is necessary for the survival of a biological community. In the United States, American citizens are on the verge of
irrevocably damaging one of the country's most unique and diverse treasures – the Florida Everglades. This national park is now the only remaining
patch of a river that used to span 120 miles from Lake Okeechobee to the Florida Bay. Dikes and levees created by the Army Corps of Engineers in the
late 1940's drained this river to reduce flooding and increase useable water for the development of the region. This major diversion of water lead to a

Truman / Address At Dedication of EvergladesNational Park (Carr, 1981)
Nearly as large as the state of New Jersey, the Everglades used to measure about 6,000 square miles (Bucks, 1998). The Everglades was a complex
wetland consisting of a mosaic of ecosystems. The heart of the Everglades was a slow moving body of water with a span of one hundred twenty
miles long and forty miles wide with an average depth of six inches to two feet of water (Lauber,1973). This broad shallow, often called the "river
of grass," was covered in a blanket of saw grass (not actually a grass but a sedge) that slowly drained the water from its main source, Lake
Okeechobee, all the way to the southernmost tip of the state and into the Florida Bay. Shaped much like a saucer, when full Lake Okeechobee would
send its overflow spilling into the shallows of the Everglades river. This natural filling process, along with the wet season's rains, is what fed the flow
of the Everglades and the underlying aquifers for centuries.
The grass in the Everglades was very important to the evolution of the land and the water. It rooted itself in the soft limestone that arose from the
ocean bottom from an accumulating deposition of seashells. The saw grass prospered and went through the seasonal death and rebirth, covering the
limestone with its decaying leaves. A spongy mass of peat then arose from the decay soaking up the rains in the wet season

The Presidential Election Of Florida Essay
Florida is a popular state when discussing political controversy. The media rushes to Florida during congressional and presidential elections due to its
reputation as a conflicted state. Here we find the southern regions to be rather liberal and voting democratically, and on the other hand, we see the
northern regions voting mostly conservatively. This creates controversy in the United States because Florida is a major determining factor of what kind
of outcome we are going to get for a presidential election. This can be especially stressful for those running for office either presidentially or for the
state specifically because they are unaware of their chances of gaining the states support and being elected into office. Florida has been being a
large impact on the outcome of presidential campaigns in past elections. One of these years in history was 1876 between Democrat Samuel J. Tilden
and Republican Rutherford B. Hayes. During this election, Tilden and the Democrats were accused of winning southern states through violence and
fraud causing Republicans to demand vote recounts. After recounts, Republicans were accused of throwing out Democratic votes so Hayes would
gain support from states that were once Tilden 's (Morris 2003). For this election, Florida played a key role along with a few other states because of
the electoral votes that were key in determining who would win this entire presidential election for that year. More recently in 2000, Florida had another

The Legacy Of East Hill Community And Historic Sacred Heart Hospital

  • 1. The Legacy Of East Hill Community Windshield Paper I.Community Core The history of East Hill is authentic old established homes and businesses throughout the narrow, shaded, quiet streets. One of the main historical landmarks is a build called Sacred Heart Hospital, which is now known as the 'Old Sacred Heart', "Pensacola Hospital, now known as the historic Sacred Heart Hospital, opened in September 1915 as the first and oldest Catholic hospital in Florida. The Daughters of Charity, a religious order dating back to 1633 also dedicated to care for the poor and the sick, invested over $400,000.00 into building and opening this facility. The Daughters community was started originally in France by St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac" (National register). On early mornings people walk /run with their dogs, walk children to school, and sit outside on their porches to have their morning coffee with the birds chirping. When I approached an elderly woman, who looked as though she was lost and wandering, I asked her if she lived in the area and she replied 'yes'. This woman was named Emma Hall, I went on asking her many other questions due to her willingness and engagement in conversation, it seemed as though she enjoyed the surprising conversation that offset her normal morning routine. She said that she has been living in East Hill for over 50 years and not a lot of structural or environmental changes took place within that time. • 4. Significance Of The Second Seminole War In order to understand the significance of the Second Seminole War, one must first examine the First Seminole War. Frustrated with Seminole protection of runaway slaves, Andrew Jackson and more than three thousand men entered northern Florida in 1816 and began to decimate Seminole populations. Despite most of these campaigns being unsanctioned by the United States government and protested by the British and the Spanish, Jackson was received as a war hero throughout the nation. The Adam–Onis Treaty of 1819 officially transfesrred ownership ofFlorida from Spain to the United States (a major political victory for the United States at the time), and the deportation of the Seminoles out of the newly acquired land became of the utmost importance in 1821. After tensions between indigenous tribes and white settlers intensified, the United States government approached the Seminoles in an attempt to begin the deportation process. The first course of action was to not only quell the conflicts between the two parties in Florida, but to begin to encroach on the Seminole land and force them into reservations. This would make it all the easier when it came time to begin official removal of the Seminoles. The Treaty of Moultrie Creek in 1823 stipulated that the Seminoles would surrender any land claims within Florida in exchange for official protection by the United States, monetary funding, and a large reservation located in central Florida. The location was designated far enough inland ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Analysis Of Truman 's ' The Truman Show ' The Truman Show is centred on a man–made island called SeaHaven where a man named Truman Burbank has been televised without his knowledge since birth. The show is a 24 hour live tv show where every aspect of Truman's life is shown. As Truman grows older he begins to notice unsual events that leads him to believe that there is something incongruent with what people are telling him and what he experiences in his day to day life. As Truman begins to test the boundaries he realizes that the town seems to revolve around him and his desire to escape comes to an all time high. Eventually Truman begins on a journey to escape his virtual reality. Despite the boundaries that the director throws at him he eventually escapes and will try to find his way in the real world. This movie made me sympathize for Truman being that he has no privacy and is oblivious to his lack of freedom. This movie shows how it is possible to create an "ideal" community and how New Urbanism can be created and maintained. New Urbanism essentially promotes an inclusive community that is close in proximity, which the ccreator of the Truman Show creates. There is many positives that comes with New Urbanism most being that all aspects of the city would be in walking distance which results in reduced cars and mixed housing. New Urbanism brings on increased communication and interaction between individuals which is facilitated by a city centre. Mumford writes about how a city is "a theatre of social action" (CR page ... Some hurricanes can even develop in the winter time, but that rarely happens, only three have been recorded since 1886. Hurricanes are not only very violent storms but they are also very dangerous. The primary dangers of the storm are the rain/flooding, high winds, the occasional tornado, flying debris from buildings and nature (i.e. trees), and the storm surges . Storm surges can be between 50 to 100 miles high. These surges may be even more dangerous than any of the other hazards because they can wipe out an entire community near the ocean. • 10. Regional Political Sub Cultures : The State Of Florida Regional political sub–cultures are the trends people in specific regions of the country have toward their government–how it should function and what they feel it should achieve. As far as the state of Florida is concerned, based on recent voter turnout and demography it can be concluded that the state is divided sub–culturally and has been in flux since the theory of political culture began. In order to understand these sub–cultures, one must first comprehend Elazar's political culture typology. In the 1960s, Elazar reasoned that the United States' values and attitudes could be identified through three political cultures which were formed based on the ideals of immigrant ancestors and also through migration patterns throughout the country. These three cultures–moralistic, individualistic and traditionalistic–align with the three primary political parties in the United States–democratic, independent and republican. He also found that when divided into thirds–north, central, and south–the country would classify itself, the north being moralistic, central being individualistic and south being traditionalistic based on the similar values and outlooks of the people that settled in these areas. That being said, the state of Florida, being a southern state, may be expected to be a traditionalistic state. However, based on recent gubernatorial and national elections, it can be deduced that the state of Florida is in fact one of the most narrowly divided states sub–culturally and ... I can see that there are mounds of suitcases and over stuffed duffle bags lined up on the faint lit sidewalks. I jumped out of the car with eagerness when I saw my friends waiting for me by the curb line. We leap with joy because; we knew that this was going to be one of the best trips of our final year in high school. The trip meant so much to us; we needed to be away from stress filled environment that is known as school. Before we left the school we needed to get our check off lists completed. My bag is checked by the parental security, to ensure that I'm not bringing unneeded items onto the school provided trip. After that I rushed to grab my obnoxious hefty garment bag, sticky tan buckled shoes, and my make–up paraphernalia. I look into each of the items to ensure every single piece I needed is in order, so I can be ready to board the buses. The garment bag contains the Earth sparkled dress, leotard, and shredded tights, with a few mystery items. The shoes need to have more stickiness for the next wear, so I placed a bulky roll of duct tape in the bottom of the bag along with the shoes. I.Introduction A.Attention Getter: As Walt Disney once stated, "To all who come to this happy place, Welcome. Here age relives fond memories of the past, and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Hoping that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to the entire world (IMDb, n.d.)." B.Relevance: Walt Disney created Disneyland and Disneyworld because he believed that people who rushed to grow up were selling themselves short. He invented the theme parks in order to bring out the inner child in you, no matter your age. C.Credibility Statement: I feel as if everyone here was ecstatic to go away to college and start their life as an adult. But why? As Walt Disney said, "who said we had to grow up? (IMDb, n.d.)." D.Central Idea: Disneyworld is known worldwide as the "happiest place on earth." E.Initial Preview: We will learn how Disneyworld was created, and how it became such a universal phenomenon through annual events and their most famous attractions. II.Body Before we can discuss how Walt Disneyworld became a household name, we need to understand how it was developed. A.First of all, Disneyworld begun with Disneyland in California. However, Walt Disney started developing Walt Disney World to give the Eastern side of the United States the same joy as he did in California. 1)As stated from Palm Beach Post, in 1964 Walt Disney quietly bought 27,000 acres of the Central Florida swampland for "The Florida Project," known today as Disneyworld. (Frias, 2011) 2)The heart of Disneyworld was designed to be named "Experimental Prototype City of Tomorrow." According to "History of Disney World" from lovetoknow.com, the park built its own energy plants, food centers, laundry, and their own airstrip to become the "self–sufficient and self–governed world" envisioned by Walt Disney. (Santiago, n.d.). 3)Sadly Walt Disney was not present for the opening of Walt Disneyworld Florida, due to his death from lung cancer. However, his brother Roy carried out "The Florida Project" naming the park Walt Disney World in honor of his brother. On October 1st of

Shirley Jackson "The Lottery" Shirley Jackson's short story "The Lottery" depicts life in a provincial American town with rigid social norms. Mr. Summers symbolizes everything that is wrong with the town; he represents blind adherence to ritual, social rigidity, and resistance to change. His name corresponds with the seasonal setting of "The Lottery," too, drawing attention to the importance of his character in shaping the theme of the story. Summers is in charge of the central motif of the story, the lottery that takes the life of a human being. A predecessor to The Hunger Games, Jackson's "The Lottery" shares in common with its modern counterpart a theme of how groupthink places a stranglehold on both individuals and whole communities. As part of his duties as lottery manager, Summers controls the black box where all the names are placed. None of the townspeople question the insanity of the lottery, and in fact, they revere it as if it were a sacred tradition. It has achieved fetish status. Thus, Jackson draws a close parallel between the ritual of the lottery and the religious rituals that characterize life in small town America. In so doing, Jackson connects herself with Nathaniel Hawthorne, whose writing critiqued small town puritan New England life and its rigid adherence to religious dogma. In "The Lottery," the people resist change just as much as their symbolic priest (Mr. Summers) does. Mr. Summers actually wants to upgrade the box, but the people do not want ... This war started because of discrimination over the Native American people and the drive to have them relocate for their land. After many attempts and one war before the second seminole war America realized they really need to demand changes and take action. The European Americans, American government and President Andrew Jackson felt that it was necessary to relocate the Seminoles from North of Lake Okeechobee to the west of the Mississippi river. The whites had intentions to remove all seminoles just so they can have the rich soil. Andrew Jackson decided to take action and divide Florida into two counties. What was once known to be West Florida was suddenly called Escambia county and what was once known as Easy Florida was know St. Johns County. Andrew Jackson had suddenly left Pope DuVal to be the Florida leader. Once he became the leader of florida, it was officially known as territory on March, 30, 1822. When northern settlers started intertwining with the Seminoles they did not get along. President Jackson felt it was best to relocate the Indians. When Andrew Jackson attempted to relocate all Seminoles and make ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From August 13 until early October, Florida was struck by Hurricanes Charley, Hurricane Frances, Hurricane Ivan, and Hurricane Jeanne whom all ranged winds of 90mph to 160mph. These storms left behind costly environmental, structural and social damage. Ripping the roofs off many homes while dismantling many other homes, those hurricanes changed the way the State of Florida and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) viewed Atlantic hurricane season. These cycles were whether still unpredictable than desired and should have created a sense of urgency towards preparing Florida for another disastrous hurricane season. Initially when first signs of Hurricane Charley first surfaced many media representatives and meteorologists predicted the hurricane to not make landfall in Florida. The hurricane was projected to stay within the Atlantic Ocean and only cause minor storms and constant rain on the Eastern Seaboard. Friday, August 12, Hurricane Charley set his eyes on the coast of Florida. Although the media broadcasted up to date information concerning the hurricane's movement and growth, residents considered the storm not to be a threat based on weather predictions. Once Charley dismayed after leaving behind costly damages, the media begin to find different reasoning for the sporadic path change that Charley had shown. • 32. U.s. Federal Aid Programs In recent years, the federal aid system has tripled in numbers in over 25 years. Some federal aid programs can range from a giant billion to a more obscure prams such as $15 million. In the beginning, federal aid programs would require other states to match the federal funds on a dollar for dollar basis. There was initial struggle when the federal aid system began to expand many believe that it would be difficult to opt out of new federal aid programs. Thus, it left residents with requirement to continue to pay federal taxes in order to support the federal aid spending. The Florida Department of Children and Families provides services and assistance to a group or to an individual who may need income, and resources for their families. The Temporary Cash Assistance program is contingent on determining eligibility for temporary assistance. Yet, due to the federal and state restrictions does not count such as ineligible noncitizens or suctioned individuals. It is a Florida law and requirement that state agencies offer detailed budget recommendations. The state of Florida has been limited to amount of spending to about $140 million of federal cash. For example, the federal cash would be reimbursed yearly towards the cost of foster care and residential group housing. The funds will increase by 3 percent a year and can assist and fund parenting classes to tutoring for children in care. Therefore, with a five–year pilot program, the funds would be available ... • 33. Descriptive Essay About Marco Island When I close my eyes and imagine, I can still clearly hear the gentle splash of the waves lapping the shoreline, and feel the slight ocean breeze whizz through my hair, sending it flying in every direction. During the frigid and dreary months of Missouri's winter, there is one place in particular that my heart longs to be. Marco Island, Florida. When most people think of a luxurious vacation, they imagine crystal clear water, snowy white sands, and a miraculous five star hotel. Marco Island is no Bora Bora, but to me it's the most enchanting small town that values simplicity and offers pure bliss to anyone coming to visit. My father proposed the idea of vacationing on Marco Island before the summer of 2016 after hearing multiple people rave to him about the breathtaking beaches and unforgettable experiences. My mother and I had never heard of Marco Island, but after five short minutes of browsing through images online of the picturesque island, we were instantly captivated and could not wait to see it for ourselves. After what seemed like an eternity of waiting for our trip to commence, we finally arrived on the dreamy island. Rather than staying at a hotel, we rented a beach house that was supposedly only a six minute walk from Marco Island Beach. While pulling up to the magnificent home, I was holding back tears of joy. The pale grayish–blue house looked like it had jumped right out of a framed photograph hanging up in the waiting room of a doctor's office. Among it's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Global Warming Essay Global temperatures on the Earth's surface have increased by 1.1 degrees Fahrenheit during the last century, faster than any time in the last 1000 years (Rauber 41). Consequently, the 1990s was the warmest decade in the last 1000 years ("Global Warming"). As humans emit fossil fuels, greenhouse gasses slowly warm the Earth's atmosphere ("EPA Global"). This gradual process is known asglobal warming. As glaciers begin to melt, sea levels rise and coastal areas in Florida may suffer immense losses ("Beach Erosion"). Florida's tourist economy may also suffer a tremendous loss, as well as agriculture ("Florida Scientists"). With a warmer atmosphere, disease will spread quicker and human health will be threatened throughout the state ("Global ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The production of citrus, sugarcane, and tomatoes adds billions of dollars to Florida's economy ("Florida Scientists"). Global warming's effects on agriculture will vary by location and on the specific crop (Alvarez et al). Warming temperatures andcarbon dioxide fertilization will increase citrus production by about 6 to 20 percent in Florida over the next 40 to 50 years (Alvarez et al). Although citrus will benefit in the short–term, its productivity in the long–run will suffer (Alvarez et al). Citrus yields will begin to decrease once temperatures have gone past the nominal growing range and soil moisture has been reduced from the heat (Alvarez et al). Sugarcane is a $437 million industry in Florida and is mostly located in Palm Beach County ("Southeast"). Global warming may severely impact the production and sales of sugarcane ("Southeast"). If sea levels rise 18 to 20 inches, flooding will intensify and decrease sugarcane yields due to nutrient pollution problems (Alvarez et al). This will decrease sugarcane growth by about 20 percent ("Southeast"). Florida is also the nation's leader in tomato production (Alvarez et al). However, a warming atmosphere could decrease the state's tomato production by about 44 percent as a result of shortened growth cycles (Alvarez et al). Global warming will definitely lead to changes in how and where Florida farmers grow crops ("Southeast"). With some crops these changes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. The Effects of Citrus Canker and Citrus Greening on the... For citrus growers in Florida, the future is uncertain. Two bacterial diseases, named citrus canker and citrus greening disease, have devastated countless acres of trees across the state. For an industry that "generates about $8.9 billion a year," this is no small issue ("Citrus Greening"). The Florida Citrus Grower's Association would like to import a landrace of orange discovered in China that is resistant to citrus greening disease and test it in Florida to discover its effects on both citrus canker and greening. Although there are advantages to importing a resistant form of citrus, the risks greatly outweigh the potential benefits, and for this reason, the Association should begin to place its efforts towards the many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unfortunately, canker is not the only disease growers have to worry about. Citrus greening disease, also commonly referred to as Huanglongbing, is a much newer disease to Florida than citrus canker. Although the bacterium, Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus, has been an issue in China since the 1900's, it did not arrive in the US until 2005 ("Citrus Greening"). The disease is spread through its primary vector, an insect called the Asian citrus psyllid. Symptoms, which include yellow mottling of leaves, small, green, and misshapen fruit, and poor yields, may not appear until several years after a tree is infected. Citrus greening is such an important issue currently because, according to the United States Department of Agriculture, "other than tree removal, there is no effective control once a tree is infected and there is no known cure for the disease" ("Citrus Greening"). To date, revenue loss caused by citrus greening disease exceeds $3.6 billion ("Citrus Greening"). Although importing a race of orange that is resistant to greening may be helpful, the imported plants must first make it through inspection and quarantine. The branch of the USDA that regulates the import and export of plant materials is APHIS, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. For Mrs. Hewes the Introduction to Social Work class we were asked to interview a licensed Social Worker and write an experience paper about the interview. Finding a social worker to interview wasn't very hard for me because many of my mother's friends got their masters in social work, but not many of them actually got their license except for one of them. The licensed social worker that I interviewed goes by the name of Tanya Hill. Tanya got her Masters of Social Work at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida in 2000, as well as her license and she now resides in Panama City, Florida. Tanya is someone that I have known since I was a little girl and someone that I definitely aspire to be like once I graduate. My interview with Tanya was over the phone since I did not have time to drive back to Florida to do a face to face one, but while we were on the phone every answer she gave me to the questions I asked were quite interesting. The first question I asked during the interview was, "How long have you been working with this agency? In this field?" Tanya's response was that she has been Self–Employed for 16 years. When I asked Tanya if the agency was public or private or a non–profit or for–profit, she said that she was a for–profit solo practitioner. Another question that I had to ask her is, "What population do you serve?", her response was Developmentally Disabled Children and Adults. • 38. Temperature Analysis Of Temperature During The Summer Temperature Analysis The expectations I held when first given this assignment are echoed in the conceptual models presented in the guidance document: locations situated close to the ocean ought to exhibit cooler temperatures during the summer months while maintaining slightly warmer temperatures during the winter and that more inland locations should display slightly higher temperatures within the summer time but lower temperatures during the winter months. This expectation was largely influenced by the knowledge I have incurred while living in a coastal area: wind and surf carry cooler air to the coast during the summer while carrying warmer air to land during the winter. Upon reviewing the recorded temperatures within the six ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As these locations have similar enough latitudes, 27.9 and 28 degrees north respectively, it is unlikely that the results are skewed. Continuing to follow the notion proposed within the given conceptual model, the southern stations showed that the inland city of Devil's Garden experienced substantially colder winters compared to the winter time temperatures seen in Miami Beach. Encountering an average winter temperature of 51.4 degrees, Devil's Garden is approximately 12 degrees cooler than Miami Beach's average minimum winter temperature of 63.6. These locations, however, did not exhibit such a large disparity in summer time temperatures with Devil's Garden's maximum average displayed at approximately 92 degrees and Miami Beach's maximum average displaying exactly 87 degrees. Upon further investigation, it appears that the discrepancy in average temperatures between the locations is perhaps caused by a sizable difference in latitudes with Devil's Garden situated at 38.8 degrees north compared to Miami Beach situated at 25.8 degrees north. This divergence is the most likely responsible for Miami Beach's high summer temperatures as areas in lower latitudes often experience warmer weather in addition to the fact that the beach is located closer to the equator. To compare coastal stations, it is clear that the second conceptual model is reasonably correct when asserting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Essay on The Florida Everglades Introduction Maintaining ecological diversity is necessary for the survival of a biological community. In the United States, American citizens are on the verge of irrevocably damaging one of the country's most unique and diverse treasures – the Florida Everglades. This national park is now the only remaining patch of a river that used to span 120 miles from Lake Okeechobee to the Florida Bay. Dikes and levees created by the Army Corps of Engineers in the late 1940's drained this river to reduce flooding and increase useable water for the development of the region. This major diversion of water lead to a trickle down effect causing the continual decline of the environmental state of the Everglades. Since then, debates over the ... Truman / Address At Dedication of EvergladesNational Park (Carr, 1981) Nearly as large as the state of New Jersey, the Everglades used to measure about 6,000 square miles (Bucks, 1998). The Everglades was a complex wetland consisting of a mosaic of ecosystems. The heart of the Everglades was a slow moving body of water with a span of one hundred twenty miles long and forty miles wide with an average depth of six inches to two feet of water (Lauber,1973). This broad shallow, often called the "river of grass," was covered in a blanket of saw grass (not actually a grass but a sedge) that slowly drained the water from its main source, Lake Okeechobee, all the way to the southernmost tip of the state and into the Florida Bay. Shaped much like a saucer, when full Lake Okeechobee would send its overflow spilling into the shallows of the Everglades river. This natural filling process, along with the wet season's rains, is what fed the flow of the Everglades and the underlying aquifers for centuries. The grass in the Everglades was very important to the evolution of the land and the water. It rooted itself in the soft limestone that arose from the ocean bottom from an accumulating deposition of seashells. The saw grass prospered and went through the seasonal death and rebirth, covering the limestone with its decaying leaves. A spongy mass of peat then arose from the decay soaking up the rains in the wet season ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. The Presidential Election Of Florida Essay Florida is a popular state when discussing political controversy. The media rushes to Florida during congressional and presidential elections due to its reputation as a conflicted state. Here we find the southern regions to be rather liberal and voting democratically, and on the other hand, we see the northern regions voting mostly conservatively. This creates controversy in the United States because Florida is a major determining factor of what kind of outcome we are going to get for a presidential election. This can be especially stressful for those running for office either presidentially or for the state specifically because they are unaware of their chances of gaining the states support and being elected into office. Florida has been being a large impact on the outcome of presidential campaigns in past elections. One of these years in history was 1876 between Democrat Samuel J. Tilden and Republican Rutherford B. Hayes. During this election, Tilden and the Democrats were accused of winning southern states through violence and fraud causing Republicans to demand vote recounts. After recounts, Republicans were accused of throwing out Democratic votes so Hayes would gain support from states that were once Tilden 's (Morris 2003). For this election, Florida played a key role along with a few other states because of the electoral votes that were key in determining who would win this entire presidential election for that year.
