12 Step Meeting Reflection
When I first heard that we were required to attend a twelve–step meeting, I was convinced that it would be an uncomfortable and frightening
experience. In my mind, I saw addicted people as dysfunctional and lost individuals who were complete opposites of anyone in my life. I decided to
attend an A.A meeting and once I walked through the doors, I realized I had been wrong. This is real evidence on how society's stigma may be
affecting our worldview very effectively in topics such as drugs and addiction. To begin, I was extremely surprised on how happy and excited these
people were by me being there. I explained that I was a student from Florida International University and everyone was thrilled to know that I wanted to
get informed about the support group. All the members were friendly and quickly offered me coffee and pamphlets full of information. A senior
member of the group opened the meeting and some of them guided me through their readings as they went along. This help facilitated my
understanding of their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most of these people had families, friends and a very successful career. They had what I eventually would like to have and yet their lives collapsed
when they started using alcohol as their escape route for stress. These stresses were due to a loss of a family member, their jobs or just their
everyday lives. Some of them were young women, who looked as what I would call normal and this made me think to myself many times during the
meeting that I could easily be one of those people. I had felt stress before and know how difficult it can be handle without falling into a bad habit.
Even though their addiction had no excuse in my eyes and I believed it was wrong, I now felt sympathetic towards them instead of judgmental. I was
able to actually understand what they were going through and admire their strength for asking for

Thirty Nine Steps Analysis
The First of Many Masterpieces
Plot
The film Thirty–Nine Steps is a brilliant adaptation of the adventurous but complicated novel written by Scottish author John Buchan. Director Alfred
Hitchcock tells the story of central protagonist Richard Hanney, (played by Robert Donat) a Canadian visitor in 1930's London who sets off on an
intense journey to prove his innocence. After shots are fired, Richard takes beautiful Annabelle Smith (played by Lucie Mannheim) back to his flat
where she reveals she is a counter spy being chased by assassins and is responsible for the shots fired. This is where Annabella first mentionsthe
Thirty–Nine steps but does not explain their significance. That night Richard's knife is used to stab Annabella in the back but she manages to give
him a map of a tiny village in Scotland to flee to before dying. Learning that he is now the main suspect in her death, Richard boards a train for
Scotland and kisses the only occupant Pamela (played by Madeleine Carroll) to throw off police. She frees herself from his arms, alerts the police
but he manages to escape. That evening he stays with a poor farmers couple and the following day ends up at the house Annabella described. After
telling his story to a seemingly respectable professor, he is shot and left for dead. Fortunately, the bullet is blocked by the farmers hymnbook in his left
coat pocket. Richard gets arrested for the London murder but breaks a window and ends up being mistaken for the introductory

Narcotics Anonymous 12 Step Program
Last night, I attended a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. This was not quite a new experience for me, be my late father was an alcoholic and narcotics
addict that died of cirrhosis later on in my life this is why I identified myself with them. Narcotics Anonymous is a fraternity or association where there
a recuperating addicts and their main purpose is stay clean. Consequently, the member of this fraternity were well–groomed, yesterday was ice cream
sticks day where they had a keyword written on a little piece of paper, such as "perseverance". Anyone can be a narcotics or alcohol user.
Furthermore, as I stated previously Sunday night I attended was a NA meeting. This meeting included one woman and approximately eight men, all the

Their arch rival is the recovery program known as "Celebrate Recovery" which is a bible–based ministry that is reared to offering counsel to their
participants, which suffer from all "hurts, hang–ups and habits", including but not limited to drug and alcohol addictions, sex addiction, eating disorders,
and people who have been sexually abused, that was established in the early 1990 by Pastors John Baker and Rick Warren of Saddleback Church, in a
counteraction to teachings of twelve–step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous Its creators thought that Alcoholics
Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous definition and allusion of God as a "higher power" was very ambiguous, in addition they wanted a more
Scriptural and Christian based program. Celebrate Recovery applies the eight Recovery Principles that are based on the Sermon on the Mount. Former
incumbent President George W. Bush honored them with his attendance to their Faith–Based and Community Initiative Conference in 2004, who
praised John Baker and Celebrate Recovery by saying that, "government is not good at changing hearts. But a person like John Baker has been good
about it and successful doing that." (Wikipedia, 2012) Hereafter, a male participant was grateful to his Higher Power

Examples Of Nature's Six Step Formula
Part 4 shows a view of my true results of living inside of Nature's six step formula.
Nature's Passport
The bottom line for lifestyle change is to expect that challenges will constantly occur. And expect that habits will be extremely difficult to break. Expect
that Nature's six step formula has turned the corner on helping those who put forth passionverance to achieve lifestyle changes.
Part Five is about how we all have met thousands and thousands of "seemingly" impossible challenges since even before birth and how Nature's six
step formula will make working to meet all challenges more like second nature.
Nation's Wisdom and You
You must invite Nature's involvement to successful cycle through all six steps. You will learn how to To be Completed
Applying Nature's Six Step Formula–Step 1
Passionverance opens the doors to step one of Nature's six step formula–internal strength. If passion or perseverance is absent from any change that
you wish to make, you are fooling yourself and simply won't be able to make the change permanently. Internal strength such as willingness to take risks,

It is critical for your mind and body to work in harmony to become actively involved in your change hopes and dreams. It is key for you to know that
your mind and body are actively involved and both depend on each other to effect the changes in your unhealthy habits. Your mind is where all changes
originate. If your mind is not molded to make change, permanent change can never, ever take place. Through your thoughts and emotions, your mind
speaks to you constantly. For example, it might scold you by making you feel guilty because you skipped your morning outing. Listen to your mind,
take note and then take action. Your body acts on changes that your mind demands, and your mind acts on changes that your body

12-Step Group Meeting
12–Step Program Group Visit For this assignment, I chose to attend an open group meeting for Overeaters Anonymous on 6/29/2015. The group
participates in the H.O.W. program of Overeaters Anonymous. H.O.W. stands for the principles of honesty, open
–mindedness, and willingness. The
meeting took place at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, located at 2535 East Broadway St. in Pearland. The format for this meeting was an open
meeting. The meeting was an informal, but structured meeting, observing both the 12–Step recovery approach, and the Overeaters Anonymous 12
Traditions. The only requirement for Overeaters Anonymous membership is the desire to stop eating compulsively. My principle motivations for
attending this meeting included the self–awareness,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Service: Carrying this message to other people who are addicted to food so they can learn how these principles may change their lives.
12–Step recovery programs utilize both open and closed meeting formats. Open meeting format is welcomes everyone, including non–addicts who wish
to attend in support of a loved one or to gain knowledge and understanding. Closed meetings accept and consist of only recovering addicts. Regardless
of the meeting type, these meetings have some general expectations:
Every attendee deserves respect.
Personal experiences are shared voluntarily; if someone wishes to remain silent, they can.
Some meetings may include speakers who can share their own insights.
Only first names are used, and attendance is never disclosed outside of a meeting.
Any money gathered is given by choice; no fees are ever demanded.
Although meetings may be held in public spaces or religious buildings, no affiliation should be assumed.
Overeaters Anonymous utilizes a peer support system, reassuring each member that they are not alone, and are not the only ones who have an addiction
to food. The goal is to remain abstinent with overeating. This accomplished by face to face meetings three times per week, sponsorship, in which the
recovering person makes four telephone contacts per day with their sponsor, self–analysis writing exercises, as well as reference literature and eating

The Problem Solving Process Will Begin
When confronted with a problem, the question we should first begin asking ourselves is "What should I do?" We will first need to examine the
problem and determine the steps needed to take in order to ensure the problem is solved satisfactorily. This is where the problem solving process
will begin. For this assignment, I will be focusing on Scenario 1: "You have worked at your company for eleven (11) years. You have returned to
college to earn a Bachelor's degree in order to increase your chances for a promotion. You are nearly finished with your degree, when a supervisor's
position in a competing company becomes available in another state. The start date is in two (2) weeks, during your final exam period for your
courses. The position offers a $15,000 per year salary increase, a car allowance, and relocation expenses. Your former supervisor works for the
company and is recommending you for the position based on your outstanding job performance; if you want the job, it's yours. All of the other
supervisors at this level in the company have Master's degrees, so you know that you would be expected to earn your Bachelor's degree and continue
on to a Master's degree. Your present company offers tuition reimbursement, but the new company does not." (cite) For this particular scenario, I have
been tasked with making a decision on whether or not I should change my job, an opportunity that will increase my salary; or stay in a position that
will allow me to further my educational

The 12 Step Program Alcoholics Anonymous
The 12 step program Alcoholics Anonymous (AA )was born in 1934. Prohibition had been repealed and a man named Bill Watson drunkenly found
his way to Manhattan Hospital. Bill was known to knock back quite a bit of whiskey every day and couldn 't seem to be able to quit. While he was at
Manhattan Hospital he was given a new and considered experimental treatment for addiction of belladonna, which is a hallucinogen. Bill in his
induced state yelled to God to help free him of alcohol. He reported seeing a bright light and feeling such serenity that Bill quit drinking alcohol. He
went on to co–found Alcoholics Anonymous and based the principles off the evangelical Oxford Group which believed people were sinners, but
with the help of God and confessing, a person could get on the proper path. AA was an answer to a huge void the medical world felt at the time in
regard to people who drank heavily. Once alcoholism was named a disease in 1956 by the American Medical Association (AMA) AA grew and
more hospitals sprung up wards for alcoholics for patients to detox with no other treatment offered. What someone in a ward for alcholhoics did
receive was members showing up to support their fellow drinker and offering support and invitations to meetings. Thus began the road to calling
alcoholism a disease and the first 12 step program AA. (14) I disagree with the notion that addiction to alcohol, drugs, sex, eating or other compulsive
behaviors is a medical disease. Gene

The Passi / The One Hundred Steps
I Cento Passi/The One Hundred Steps manages to convey the life of Peppino Impastato in a way that leaves us (as viewers) to be the ultimate judges
of his character–– and retains a degree of emotionality that allows viewers to forge a human connection between themselves and Peppino Impastato as
they form ideas about him; it is a strong and powerful call to action. I Cento Passi is effective because it is moving, it is nostalgic, and most
importantly–– it's relatable. I think the most effective way to look at I Cento Passi is by starting at its conclusion and working back. I Cento Passi is
first and foremost, a film, and it does not attempt to hide this. From the dialogues to the music–– it does not pretend to be a documentary. Yet, while...

For others, he is a true martyr, sacrificing intimate familial relations for his cause. We are left to draw our own conclusions about Peppino's value––
but that is precisely the goal. It is not Peppino's value as a person that is important, rather it is that his memory be preserved. Whether or not one
agrees with the way he fought for change, the fact that he did all in his power to fight forces that unjustly overpowered him is a fact that cannot be
erased. One of the most drawing things about the shift from color to black–and–white could be seen in the flags flying above the procession. It seems
to me somewhat counter intuitive that as the color begins to fade from color to black–and–white that the red flags would become white–– and yet they
do. White flags typically bring to mind symbolic defeat, surrender... but in this case, white might represent a lack of color. The flags that are raised no
longer represent Peppino's ideology, rather they represent any and all ideologies. The flags could be any color–– they are merely a symbol of
something other than themselves. In the same way, the story of Peppino Impastato can be "fitted over" another historical figure who dies for their
cause. Once again, the narrative detailed within allows itself to be extended, and is left to viewer "interpretation." The distinction between I Cento
Passi and other films that double as

Analysis Of Small Steps
Author Style To start off, Louis Sachar writes in many different styles in the different books he writes. There are many different books that he has
written and has gotten many awards. Sachar won the Newbery Medal for one of his top selling books, called Holes. Another book that he is written is
called Small Steps. Small Steps is about how you have one thing at a time in life and not do so many things at once. In the book Small Steps, Louis
Sachar uses figurative language, conflict to help keep the reader engaged, and uses the same character's name in multiple of his books as his
writing style. One style that Louis Sachar uses in the book Small Steps is conflict. Conflict is a struggle between opposing forces or when two
characters in a story get in a fist fight or just a fight over a conversation. In the book Small Steps, an example of conflict is on page 217, "She
picked up her cup and tossed the contents at him, splattering him with coffee and cream." Kira got mad at Armpit because Armpit said that Kira
should consider another profession besides singing and Kira was really upset that Armpit said that. Kira tossed the cup of coffee at him while
everyone in the store stared at Armpit with coffee all over his shirt. This relates to the author's style because Sachar likes to use a lot conflict in his
books to keep the reader engaged. Another example of conflict in the book Small Steps is on page 199, "Moses whacked him on the side of his head.
X–Ray gets hit on the side of his head very hard by Moses, who is a man who wants the counterfeit tickets that X–Ray has. X–Ray's glasses broke, and
his tickets were stolen by Moses, while X–Ray lay on the floor after he got punched in the face. Sachar uses a lot of conflict in the books he writes. In
addition to conflict, another style that Louis Sachar uses in his books, especially Small Steps and Holes, is figurative language. Figurative language is a
language that uses words of expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. It also uses exaggerations or alterations to make
a linguistic point. An example of figurative language in Small Steps

Explain The Two Step Flow Theory
The Two Step Flow theory dates back to the 1940s where Paul Lazarsfeld, Bernard Berelson and Hazel Gaudet wrote a book called People's Choice
that summarized the analysis of the November 1940 Presidential elections. The research revealed that people are more likely to be influenced by other
people rather than the mass media. They called these 'other' people; opinion leaders. (Scannel, 2007). The theory is a key theory in understanding
people's decision making processes, in this case being the voting behaviours. The theory suggests that firstly, opinion leaders pay close attention to mass
media and then they pass on their interpretation of media messages to the public, influencing their decisions. Unlike the hypodermic needle theory, the
two step flow theory acknowledges that audiences are active participants in the communication process and are seen as a part of the society.
Having the theory defined, the question that the paper aims to dissects is how relevant is this theory in the world of modern communications today? In
a paper presented in the 20th Annual Worldwide Web Conferencing in 2011, researchers who focussed on the social... Show more content on

Started from analysing voting behaviour, it has been used in various fields ranging from modern technology and social media phenomena to politics,
advertising, marketing and so on. The two step flow theory led to multi–step flow model referred to as Diffusion of Innovation which is defined as the
"social process of how innovations become known and are spread throughout a social system over time". (Severin and Tankard, 2001). The two step
flow theory is hence a key theory in not only understanding and analysing decision making and interpersonal communication but helps put perspective
in understanding mass communication and its various other

Essay about 39 Steps Live Theatre Review
Earlier this summer on the 14th of August at the Criterion Theatre in Oxford Circus, I went the evening performance of The 39 Steps. The 39
Steps was originally a book by John Buchan set before the First World War, the book was later adapted into a film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It
was a serious book and film following a bachelor called Richard Hannay who meets a mysterious German woman at a play, the women begs him to
take her home with him and later reveals she is a spy trying to discover the truth about an organisation trying to steal British defence plans and
something called the 39 steps. Later the women is assassinated in Hannay's home and he is the main suspect, he sets out to try and prove his innocence

There was a lot of breaking the fourth wall to keep to audience involved because the main priority of this play was to entertain not to tell a story, in
fact a lot of the story was left out and left the audience's imagination. In the climax of the play the villain is shot dead by a mysterious hand that
you could see creep out of the curtain and shot him. His final words were "IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A CAST OF FOUR!" as all four actors were
on stage so it couldn't have been anyone the audience were aware of.
There was banter at one point between the actors and the audience where Hannay was making a speech to an invisible audience but also us at the
same time, he asked what was supposed to be a rhetorical question he asked "Shall we not just enjoy this period of peace?" and someone shouted out
"YEAH!" and he looked directly at them and pointed and said "thank you kind sir!" the actors made the audience feel it was acceptable to interact with
them even unpredictably.
Using a very limited amount of props and only a small end on stage, they managed to create multiple characters and locations; they had a lot of
recurring jokes and used the rule of three and a lot of slapstick humour. For example at one point the German women says "There are men following

Step Brothers Movie Analysis
How many 40–year–old unemployed slackers do you know? Now imagine 2 of them under the same roof obnoxiously fighting about childish
things. Step Brothers from start to finish is exactly this displaying 2 outrageously comical actors in Will Ferrell and John C Reilly bickering back
and forth trying to learn how to cope with one another. The glory of this film comes from the constant one liners that make no sense but fit the film
perfectly, the childish behavior, and the elementary school comebacks mixed in with the adult language which adds a different but great comical
sense that few movies have been able to portray before. Such as when Ferrell refers to Reilly as a "Big, fat, curly–headed f***". This line had me
rolling on the floor due to the seriousness of Ferrell and the reaction of Reilly and the fact that it is a simple 3rd grade insult with an F–bomb thrown
in there that just makes it all that more funny. Although Talladega Nights and the Anchorman trilogy had better storylines none compare to the pure
comedy that Step Brothers provides. Step Brothers is Will Ferrell's most entertaining movie made to date, and is one that can be watched over and over
without losing its humor.
Step Brothers stars Will Ferrell(Brennan: 39 years old) and John C Reilly(Dale: 40 years old). They both are unemployed stay at home loafers who
do nothing besides watch cops and play the drums. When Brennan's mom Nancy and Dale's dad Robert marry Brennan and Dale are forced to share a

Essay on Live Evaluation of 39 Steps
Evaluation of a live performance:
The performance I went to see was "The 39 Steps" on the 25th of March, at the Criterion Theatre in London, it's produced by Gaumont British.
The original 39 steps was an action spy novel written by John Buchan in 1915. Then Alfred Hitchcock produced a film, then the play was written
and when I first saw the play it was a bit of a shock seeing as the book and film are set as thrillers and the play is very much a comedy.
The play is set in 1914 and Europe is on the brink of war. The main protagonist Richard Hannay is bored with life, until he runs into a mysterious
German woman names Annabella Schmidt at the theatre. Richard then takes the woman home with him and she reveals that she is tracking down ...

This I thought was a very different, but clever way of expressing large scenes. Occasionally a follow spot was used to highlight some parts of the of
the play for comical effect. At the beginning Richard is asked to look out the window by Annabella and when he does two actors run on stage with
a lamp post and as soon as they are on the spot light is on and when they leave it's off again, they did this to give a sense of perspective from the
window to the street and also to take the mick out of classic thrillers.
The set and props where very compact and were built and moved on and off by the cast because they are designed to be transferred by one person.
The props where all cleverly done, for instance they made a bridge out of three ladders, a train out of four boxes and a house from just one door.
The door I thought was one of the best props used because the cast managed to make a fairly small stage appear huge just by moving the door and
pretending each time that it was a new room every time they passed through it. At one point in the play Richard and Pamela ask the scottish
landlords for a sandwich and they come back with a loaf of bread cut in two with one slice of lettuce in the middle, this was such a simple idea but
made a big deal and a laugh out of it
The rhythm of the production was extremely fast paced due to the size of the cast and comedy. The costumes helped speeding up the pace with changes

My First 12 Step Meeting
For posterity's sake, I tried to recall my first 12–step meeting and have concluded that it was most likely the year 1996, it was cold in the little town of
Altoona. The clubhouse was strange, dark, smelled of coffee, and full of smoke there, the people were all so different, but all of them seemed to
know some secret code, plus they seemed to talk as if reading bumper–stickers. As I "kept coming back," I began to feel more comfortable, understand
what was going on, and want what these people had. People at these meetings were open, appeared comfortable in their own skins, and had such,
dramatic, fascinating stories that were dark, yet somehow uplifting. Since that time, I have been to a plethora of various types of meetings at various
locations, but there is a theme throughout of trust, and a bond of acceptance that makes one feel welcome wherever one goes to a meeting. Therefore, I
had a plan to go to Allentown with my fiancГ©e to an NA meeting he used to go to on Saturday night, however, as things sometimes happens, this
did not go as planned. Not to worry, I have learned long ago that alternative meetings can work just as well, or better. In fact, for all the meetings I
have attended, I have never regretted going, or not gotten something out of it. Ending up going to one of my favorite meeting places, all worked out
for the best, as I felt it would. The Sunday Morning Speakers Group D–33 at the Muhlenberg Recreation Center on River Road starts at 11:00 a.m.,

My Goals And Steps For Yourself
Having learned that setting goals and steps for yourself is one of the best and most efficient ways to reach your goals. A while ago, I decided to set
my own academic, career, and leadership goals. I came up with the best three steps that can be taken to reach those goals. In addition, I analyzed my
strengths that can best assess me get those steps done. This helped boost my self–esteem and motivated me to reach my goals, because I proved to
myself that I already have the strengths needed to take specific steps that would get me closer to my goals. For my academic goal, I wanted to earn
a GPA of 3.80 or higher by the end of the semester. The three steps I took to achieve this goal are important. First, I turned in all of my assignments
and studied well for any exams or quizzes. Second, I managed to study for at least 2 hours for almost everyday of the week. This step not only
helped me get step 1 done, but it also increased my ability to learn more material. Third, I met with professors about once a week for additional
help over course material. Those steps were very successful at helping me reach my academic goal. I was able to stay on track with all of my
classes, manage enough studying time to to prepare well for exams and get assignments done on time. Outstandingly, my grades did go up and are
still on the increase. After getting great results, I will definitely keep doing the steps I have done over the past few weeks to raise my grades even
more. Although all three

Step 12: Having a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we try to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our
affairs (Alcoholics Anonymous. 2012). What I learned about recovery and relapse is that it can happen at any time and some people know what
triggers their relapse while others have no idea, thinking it's just genetics. It is an everyday struggle for the addict, it doesn't go away with time.
There is no cure for addiction, only everyday step by step treatment and leaning on one another for support. I learned that sponsorship works with one
alcoholic helping another by listening and vouching for the newer alcoholic. The sponsor has been sharing their story and helping others through their
own addiction over time. Sponsorship has some responsibility but the alcoholic that they sponsor takes the accountability. The sponsor is not only a
person to guide the member through the AA program, but to also be there to listen. Being able to rely on a sympathetic ear can be particularly
important when the individual feels on the verge of relapse ( A. Darwin, 2014). Hearing the story of Bob made me think how I could help others. I

Critique Of Pozzoli Case: Inventive Step Test
Critique of Pozzoli case (Inventive step test)
Introduction
A patent is an exclusive right granted for an invention, product or process that provides a new way of doing something, or that offers a new technical
solution to a problem. An invention in general must fulfill certain criteria in order to be protected by a patent. For example, the Patents Act, 1970 in S.
2(1) (j) defines invention as a new product or process involving an inventive step and capable of industrial application. In other words, an invention in
order to be patentable must show an element of novelty, must show "an inventive step", and must be of practical use. Particularly, the Patents Act,
1970 defines "inventive step" as a feature of an invention that involves technical advance as compared to the existing knowledge or having economic
significance or both and that makes the invention not obvious to a person skilled in the art. In other words, patent rights are not available for new
advances that are merely obvious extensions or modifications of prior designs. Besides, the requirement of difference over prior art, there is a
requirement to establish the extent of common general knowledge that exists while ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Analysis Of The Film 'The Thirty-Nine Steps'
Hitchcock described his film, The Thirty–Nine Steps, as "a film of episodes. He made sure the content of every scene was very solid, so that each one
would be a little film in itself" (Truffaut, p.95). The sequence "The Crofter and His Wife" is one of the sections that acts as a film within the film. The
central theme of this sequence is character entrapment. At around mark 26:30, the scene opens with a view of the countryside which appears to be
picturesque and peaceful. However, it is clear that the countryside is also remote and uninhabited. As Hannay walks towards Alt–na–Shellach he finds
himself at a very small house which seems to be the only house in the area and soon figures out that it belongs to a poor crofter and his wife. Hannay
asks the crofter if he knows where the professor's house is. The crofter informs him that it is 14 miles away from their current location and this is why
Hannay pays to stay the night instead of traveling at night. Both the crofter and his wife are distanced from society. In addition, the isolated
environment in which the house is placed is an example of the theme of entrapment.
As this scene progresses, Hannay is introduced to the crofter's wife, Margaret. It is clear to Hannay and the view that there is a significant age gap
between the couple. As Margaret prepares supper, she engages in a conversation with Hannay. Although Margaret did not grow up in the countryside,
her husband does not approve when she talks about outside places such as London. She explains, "he says it's best not to think of such things and all the
wickedness that goes on there." Margaret then asks, "Is it true that all the London ladies paint their toenails?" It is evident that Margaret is physically
and mentally entrapped in the countryside with a man much older than her.
While the crofter is praying, he grows suspicious when he notices the glances exchanged by Hannay and Margaret at the dinner table. Hitchcock uses
shot–reverse techniques as the camera captures the expressions on the character's faces. The crofter steps out of the house and says he needs to check
the barn door. Instead, he spies on Hannay and Margaret through the kitchen window. The crofter is shot in a frame within a frame as he

Essay on Alcoholics Anonymous: 12-Step Program
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is the largest and most commonly known self–help group in the world. Since the creation of AA in 1935, there have been
many programs modeled after it, which are also based on the 12–Step Program. Some of these include Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Chemically
Dependent Anonymous, as well as programs for specific drugs, such as Cocaine Anonymous (CA) and Crystal Meth Anonymous (NIDA, 2012).
Attendance and participation for self–help groups are open for anyone to attend and free of cost for all members, with meetings typically held in
locations such as churches and public buildings. "Metropolitan areas usually have specialized groups, based on such member characteristics as gender,

When an individual believes, and expects, to have positive effects from a certain drug (e.g., drinking alcohol to reduce stress and anxiety), the
likelihood that the individual will abuse the drug is extremely high. Sociocultural factors also play a vital role in how frequently a substance is
used, with family and friends being the most influential. A broken family home (e.g., marital problems, parent/sibling alcohol or drug use, and
legal or psychiatric problems) can have a tremendous negative effect on a child and the decisions they make. A lack of emotional support from
parents is found to increase drug use, whereas the lack of parental monitoring if often associated with higher drug use (Kring, 2014). The idea of
being "popular" and having a ton of friends seems to be a common goal for the majority of adolescents and young adults. Social influence is
explained by the fact that having peers who drink, influences drinking behavior; however, it is also known that individuals will choose friends with
drinking patterns similar to their own. While growing up, most of us have always been told to choose our friends wisely; however, they neglected to
tell us how difficult this can be. The 12–Step program addresses the factors or causes that are responsible for, or related to, substance abuse by helping
individuals to understand the concept of change. "Processes of change are the covert and overt activities that people engage in to alter affect, thinking,

Narcotic Anonymous : A Ten Step Group
Narcotic Anonymous is a twelve–step group that allows narcotic users to meet with others who have the same problem. It is a group that allows an
individual to have support from another individual who has been or is going through the same thing. The objective of these meetings is to help
individuals become and remain clean (na.org). I was able to observe one of these meetings. The meeting I attended was at The Meeting House, which
was in Point Pleasant at St. Paul's Church. The meeting commenced at 7:30 p.m. and completed at 8:30 p.m. The physical environment was in a nice
place, but I thought it was weird to have it across from Fruth's, Rite–Aid, and a doctor's office behind it. The meeting room was in the basement of the
church. They had... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If they didn't want to speak, all they had to say was that they passed. Before anyone spoke, they would say their name and "I am an addict." All the
members had slips that were to be signed when they walked in, and I could tell some of the individuals didn't want to be there. They were quiet
and didn't join in any of the conversations between the members. They just sat back and played on their phones. The leader was at the head table,
and they were behind he/she. The leader was unable to see that they were on the phones. It was stated at the beginning phones were to not be out at
all during the meeting. The dynamics of the group was the leader, which was the coordinator. I believe the leader also had the roles of orienter,
initiator, and encourager. They were the one the one leading the meeting and keeping it going in the direction it was supposed to, outlined the tasks
for the group, and encouraged participation in group discussion. There were several mute or silent members. These members only talked when it
came around to them in the circle, and they only spoke to say they were going to pass. These roles applied to several of the members. The leadership
style in this meeting was democratic. The members came together and made decisions, such as: having a bonfire meeting next weekend. Self–help
groups are used when the individual is ready to get help or is forced to attend. These groups attempt to have you

Defining Characteristics Of The 12 Step Approach
Introduction A brief overview of the defining characteristics of the 12–step approach (Baldwin et al., 2011, Bateson, 1971, Jellinek, 1960, Lacan and
Miller, 1998, Raikhel and Garriott, 2013, Schenker, 2009, University of Chester, 2016, Wilcox, 1998) with particular focus on its definition
(NCCMH, 2008) and UK based studies (Best et al., 2001, Day et al., 2005, Harris et al., 2003) recognising the translatability of the 12–steps relating to
'higher power' and 'personal responsibility' (Appendix 1, p.11) create tensions for client/patient engagement (Best et al., 2001, Harris et al., 2003) and
staff/professional referral (Day et al., 2005). A commissioned report by National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health (NCCMH, 2008) by National
Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and a recent 8–year review of the aforementioned (NICE, 2016) inform current NICE guidelines
including referrals to 12–step (NICE, 2007). The current evidence base (NCCMH, 2008) uses a systematic review of the literature (McAuliffe, 1990,
Etheridge et al., 1999, Moos et al., 1999, Fiorentine and Hillhouse, 2000, Toumbourou et al., 2002, Weiss et al., 2005, Timko et al., 2006). An 8
–year
review of the evidence (NICE, 2016) finds no new evidence to warrant evolving the existing guideline, providing supporting evidence and emerging
evidence to inform the current guidelines (Johnson et al., 2006, Kelly et al., 2010, Laudet et al., 2006, McKellar et al., 2009, Timko and DeBenedetti,

The 39 Steps
The 39 Steps Response Paper
The 39 Steps is the first play that I saw from the School of Arts and Sciences at Ohio University. It was adapted from the novel written by John Buchan
and the 1935 film by Hitchcock. The story is about an English man named Richard Hannay, who is plunged into international espionage after meeting a
beautiful Russian woman spy in a theatre. After she tells her secrets and mentions the 39 steps to Hannay, she gets injured and finally dies in his
house. He is charged with the crime of murder, so he runs away but at the same time tries to find the Professor and the meaning of the 39 steps. On his
journey, he stays in a shepherd's cottage and the wife of shepherd helps him escape. Then he meets a woman named Pamela.... Show more content on

When he first tells the truth, the milkman just thinks it is only a joke. The actor who portrays milkman was shaking his head and having a smile with
distain. In order to overcome this obstacle (milkman does not believe in him) and achieve his objectives (gets the uniform and runs away), he
chooses to tell the milkman a fake love story about run away couples, which is more acceptable to ordinary people and easier to provoke
sympathy. He pulled the milkman to his side, lowered his voice and acted like he trusts him. The milkman's facial expression changed and seemed
to believe this story immediately. "Oh no!" The actor had sorrowful looks on his face to show that he has empathy for Hannay. "Here you go! Here
you go!" I remember he repeated this line for several times. Then he quickly took off his white uniform and gave it right away. Hannay looked
surprised at first and gave the milkman some money in the pocket of the uniform to show his gratefulness for the help. In the end, when the milkman
realized that the money was his money, he felt cheated and exaggeratedly shouted, "Oh!! It is MY money! He gave me MY money!" The performance
created a comedic execution.

Naomi Carter: A Short Story
She sat on her unmade bed, swishing her legs back and forth as she waited for Naomi to finish her makeup. Naomi had her face positioned directly
in front of the mirror, her hand remaining steady and fluid as she swept her black eyeliner across her eyelid. They had class in ten minutes, but
Naomi apparently ignored that fact. Carter knew her roommate spent a solid hour in front of the small mirror already; the girl curled her blonde hair
in rippling waves and took her time on applying her contour and highlight despite it being so early in the morning and their destination being a small
poetry class. Naomi was pretty though. That was her thing. Her trademark. Her smile was blinding, her hair was bouncy and soft, and her body
possessed the grace that you only got from the combination of years of dedicated dancing and natural talent. She didn't just apply a pink lip and some
shimmery highlight to her cheekbones though. She was naturally a force of beauty. Naomi chose to focus on that aspect of herself and Carter assumed

Our Iceberg Is Melting, By John Kotter
"Once upon a time a colony of penguins was living in the frozen Antarctic on an iceberg near what we call today Cape Washington." From the first
sentence of John Kotter's bestselling book, Our Iceberg Is Melting, it is difficult to tell that one is about to read a great fable about how to manage
change in business as well as everyday life. ! The following summary will explain the key moments of the fable and how they relate to our lives. First,
let's introduce some of the more important penguins – the Leadership Council members. Louis, the head of the Leadership Council, could perhaps be
considered the CEO of the penguin colony. Alice is a smart, aggressive member ofthe council, and is Fred's loyal confidant. Buddy is a young penguin
council member who may not be the brightest bulb in the box, but brings an element of trust among the council members. Fred is the most curious of
all of the penguins; although he was an 'unknown' penguin in the beginning, he ultimately plays a very important role in the change process. Jordan,
also known as the "Professor," was the brains of the council; he could perhaps be considered the 'researcher' of the group. Although the penguins start
out simply as individuals, in the end, they are a well working team capable of effectively managing change. Fred, a quite curious penguin, studies the
wonderful iceberg that the penguins consider home. He comes across a problem which suggests that their beloved iceberg may be in danger of

12 Step Programs Pros And Cons
In the past few years, there has been controversy about the 12–Step programs effectiveness and the programs ability to help people recover and
overcome an addiction.
Some people argue that the 12–Step model doesn't really work and people should seek other forms of treatment. However, there are studies that argue
different ways that the 12–Step programs have helped people recover and overcome addiction and have provided continuity during aftercare once a
person has returned to normal life after treatment.
The 12–Step model has many benefits that should not be disregarded. Research continues to demonstrate that these programs are helpful because they
are part of a more well–rounded treatment program. This treatment program consists of detox,

Alcoholics Anonymous:
The 12–Step Treatment
The 12–step program used by Alcoholics Anonymous is a well–known treatment method that's used for many types of addiction, not just alcohol.
Alcoholics are encouraged to "work" the 12–steps. The first step involves admitting the powerlessness over alcohol. The second step has the alcoholic
believe that there is some type of a greater power working that will help aide the alcoholic to reach sobriety, as well as maintain is once reached. This
step is an example of the religious influence on the 12–step recovery process.

The chips are usually different colors, depending on how long the alcoholic has been sober.
The final two steps of Alcoholics Anonymous involve "taking inventory" of your life and understanding why you did what you did when drunk.
These are called the drinker's motivations. Step 12 talks about three major parts the alcoholic should have accomplished. They are having had a
spiritual awakening, practicing the lessons learned in Alcoholics Anonymous, and carrying the message of recovery to other alcoholics. The final step
seems like a lifetime step. It is practiced by the drinker, along with the other steps for the rest of their life. It stresses the amount of work they must put
in for the program to work for them.
It is said that, once completed, the alcoholic has a lifetime of recovery. Alcoholism is a disease that most alcoholics will admit never goes away.
Alcoholics need ongoing treatment and support. There is always a chance to "fall off the wagon." Alcoholics should enter a long–term treatment
facility, go through detox, join Alcoholics Anonymous and attend meetings regularly. The longer an alcoholic receives treatment, the better the chances
for becoming sober and being able to stay that way.
In conclusion, though the 12–steps may be a life changer for some. The 12–steps are not a one–size fits all method, in fact for many it has failed to suit
their needs. The best way to stay sober is simply through abstinence. It is the only true "cure" of alcoholism.

Derek Fisher played the main role of Richard Hannay a young man whose mundane lifestyle suddenly becomes a fast paced adventure. Fisher's
voice was very assertive and controlled in comparison to the two clowns played by Mark Spenser and Peter Bird, whose job it was to be a
comedic element as well as playing all the missing roles during the performance. The two clowns never stopped switching roles and even though
the change was very obvious to the audience, both actors played along with that idea, amusing the audience as well of themselves. Alison Cox
played the main female part, continuously jumping between characters as well. Cox was so clever in doing so that is was difficult to remember
that she had played a completely different role less then a minute ago. Her accents, facial expressions or posture altered to the new personalities of
her character. The movement of the piece was quite effective and successful considering the shortage of space available. The actors produced different

Using The Root Cause Analysis And `` 5 Whys ``
I must admit, I am uncomfortable putting work conflicts on the internet, and even more uncomfortable exposing personal relationship conflicts that
should inherently be private. I also do not watch the news, because I do not trust it as a source of information. Thus, for the purposes of this essay, I
shall describe the most recent inner conflict of note that I have experienced instead, and analyse it using the "Root Cause Analysis" and "5 Whys"
strategies that were discussed in this week's reading.
While it is not a particularly recent source of conflict – it happened about three or four years ago – it resulted in some life–changing events. I shall
briefly describe the timeline: in January 2012, I move to New Zealand to study for a diploma in 3D Animation and VFX. By November 2012, I had
decided that I no longer wanted to be studying towards a qualification in the VFX industry, and decided to enrol at one of the universities in Auckland
for a degree in Hospitality instead. By March 2013, I had turned right around, and enrolled in a different school for a degree in none other than 3D
Animation and VFX.
Using the "Root Cause Analysis" and "5 Whys" strategies, I shall explore the reasons for these changes I made – what made me deflect from my
original course, and then later why I came back to it. Many of these observations are made in hindsight, so may sound more logical and rational than I
truly was at the time.
First, I shall consider why I left my first course of study:

If you are suffering from a drug addiction, you 've likely heard of groups like Narcotics Anonymous and their dedication to the 12–step process.
However, few people really understand what these 12–steps entail and how they can be used to overcome addiction. Understanding them can help you

This isn 't true: they are designed to be effective when utilized in any order, meaning you may be able to make the 10th step before the 2nd. However,
most people find that following the steps in order helps give their life a focus and order that addiction had eliminated. These steps include:
1. We admitted that we were powerless over our addiction; that our lives had become unmanageable; In this step, you face the reality of your addiction
and come to terms with the fact that your life is out of control. You are preparing yourself to receive the help you need.
2. We came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity; in many ways, this is one of the most important steps: you are
surrendering your fate to a Higher Power in order to help restore your life to stability. For many people, giving up this control will be a major challenge.
3. We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him; giving yourself over to the God of your choice and
asking Him for help is a beautiful moment in the 12–step program and one that will give you the strength to succeed.
4. We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves; total personal honesty is a must in this step. You need to grasp the ways that your
addiction has changed your behavior and caused you to behave in ways that may shame you. However, you also need to identify your positive traits
and work towards strengthening

The 12 Steps Of Counseling
The 12 Steps are Vital in Successful Counseling In Counseling for Alcohol and Drug Abuse, the need to use different techniques is an iatrical part
of the process. Working with an individual that is either entering into recovery or actively in recovery, the clinician must take their time with
introducing the 12 Steps. The individual may not be open to the 12 Step philosophy right away. Addiction is very complex and actively affects the
person on a daily basis; therefore, it is so important to begin from the onset of counseling to create a structured program. There are many different
types of counseling approaches for people who are in an active addiction or at the beginning stages of getting help. Finding effective ways of
maintaining sobriety can be extremely difficult and challenging. In counseling the individual must begin with gaining trust in the therapist. The 12
Steps may not be introduced at the onset of counseling depending on the stage of their situation. Sometimes, it is helpful to gradually work with the
person on finding out what they have done in the past and see why it did or did not work for them. Many times clients will tell the therapist that
they have failed with the 12 Steps, so they feel it is not worth trying again. There is a great deal of misconceptions about 12 Step programs, and

Addiction is also one of the only diseases that actually leads to another disease. By drinking, smoking or taking drugs a person can develop
cancers, liver disease, heart problems, lung disease, and more. These diseases are brought on by the action of the addict. There is not another
disease that produces another disease based on a person's actions. Also there are many people who experiment with drugs that do not go on to
become addicts. One final thought to support my viewpoint. There are also addicts that quit cold turkey and do not use again ever. (15) They did
it on their own, under their own will power, without any medical intervention or 12 step program. There is no other medical disease that a person
can use their own will power and decision making to stop having a disease. What I will concede is that there is an addictive compulsive component

obsessive compulsive behaviors, it is how we choose to act or not act on them that I think sets those of us apart from others. Lets get into how the 12

Hitchcock's Film Adaptation Of The 39 Steps
The 39 Steps is a theatrical production based on John Buchan's 1915 novel and Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 film. Unlike the original source material, the
production was designed for four actors to play over a hundred characters in total. Overall, it was an incredibly successful performance which did not
fail to bring in a good story and laughs throughout.
The story is set in Britain during the 1930s and the stage production shows points to this in a few ways. The most noticeable hints I found towards the
time period was the costumes, which is what tends to draw my eye a lot. Alfred Hitchcock's film adaptation of The 39 Steps was very much in the 'film
noir' style. Black and white colour scheme, somewhat melodramatic acting, the whole lot. While the theatre production is not completely in this style,
it still makes some allusions towards Hitchcock's film. For example, the acting is still very hammy and overdramatic (though not in a bad way by any
means) and the main protagonist does monologue about himself.
The production has only four actors to play all the characters, around ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

While these three characters were distinct, made so by their different costumes and accents, it actually wasn't that easy. When Pamela returned later in
the play, it took me a good while to clue in that we had seen her before. There was nothing instantly grabbing about that one role that made me
instantly recognise her so I thought it was simply a new character. Unlike Annabella or Margaret, Pamela didn't have a noticeable German or Scottish
accent and wasn't as melodramatic in her actions. In fact, Pamela had so little impact on me that I completely forgot her

What Is Self Care? Essay
What is Self–Care?
Self–care is one of those words that therapists use, forgetting that the rest of the population has never heard of it. Basically, it is a noun referring to
taking care of your own emotional well–being.
Self–Care works on two levels. First, the obvious– it allows you to take care of yourself, to nurture yourself. Second, it subconsciously sends you the
message that you deserve to be taken care of, which can help increase your self–esteem, self–worth, and happiness.
Self–care doesn 't need to take up a lot of time. Even the busiest person could build in five minutes a day to do some deep–breathing or to call a friend.
Explore how self–care can fit into your schedule. Show yourself that YOU are just as important as the other responsibilities in your life.
Self–care can mean adding one thing into each day that you can look forward to. It could be watching your favorite TV show, taking an extra long
shower, or spending five minutes in silence– whatever works for you.
Just because you 're feeling happy, doesn 't mean that self–care isn 't necessary. It is still important to pay attention to your needs and feelings, and to
nurture yourself.
Thoughts and Behaviors...
Self–care isn 't just about activities, it can include any thoughts or behaviors. For instance, it includes stopping yourself from using negative self–talk. It
also includes setting and enforcing boundaries in your relationships (with parents, friends, romantic partners, colleagues) that

Essay On 12 Step Meeting
Running head: 12–Step Meeting Reaction Paper 12–Step Meeting Reaction Paper Carissa Hardy ADRE 6703 Abstract The Alcoholics Anonymous
12–Step recovery program guides alcoholics through a series of behavioral, emotional, cognitive, spiritual and social actions towards sobriety and
wellness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, excessive drinking has lead to approximately 88,000 deaths in the United
States each year and accounts for 1 in 10 deaths in working age adults, aged 20–64. Alcoholics Anonymous, a spiritual fellowship of men and women
focused on a common goal of stopping drinking, has helped over 2 million people get sober and stay sober. The 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous are
designed to promote... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I also enjoyed the prayer at the end. I didn't like when everyone had to admit aloud that they were alcoholic (I get that it's part of the 12 steps but it
seemed like they had already admitted it to themselves because they were there). I did like that the meeting was held in a church. The atmosphere
was relaxed, calm and non judgmental. Even in a room full of what could've been total first timers or strangers, they had an amazing and supportive
energy that just filled the room. I loved watching the people connect, grow, and heal over a tragedy that took over their life. It was also amazing and
empowering to see them make the step to give themselves and the people they love a better future. I feel the 12–Step program is successful because
others who can empathize, offer advice, and understand exactly what the other is going through are there for support and encouragement. By the time
you decide to enter the meeting you are usually self–aware that there is a problem and you want to help yourself; to me that can and will make all the
difference in determining your success in the program. I really like that 12–Step Programs are faith based, I think believing in something bigger than
yourself is crucial to the process. I also like that its catered to a lifestyle change overall, not just one singular change like to stop drinking but changing
the way you live your

12 Step Meeting Reflection

  • 1. 12 Step Meeting Reflection When I first heard that we were required to attend a twelve–step meeting, I was convinced that it would be an uncomfortable and frightening experience. In my mind, I saw addicted people as dysfunctional and lost individuals who were complete opposites of anyone in my life. I decided to attend an A.A meeting and once I walked through the doors, I realized I had been wrong. This is real evidence on how society's stigma may be affecting our worldview very effectively in topics such as drugs and addiction. To begin, I was extremely surprised on how happy and excited these people were by me being there. I explained that I was a student from Florida International University and everyone was thrilled to know that I wanted to get informed about the support group. All the members were friendly and quickly offered me coffee and pamphlets full of information. A senior member of the group opened the meeting and some of them guided me through their readings as they went along. This help facilitated my understanding of their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most of these people had families, friends and a very successful career. They had what I eventually would like to have and yet their lives collapsed when they started using alcohol as their escape route for stress. These stresses were due to a loss of a family member, their jobs or just their everyday lives. Some of them were young women, who looked as what I would call normal and this made me think to myself many times during the meeting that I could easily be one of those people. I had felt stress before and know how difficult it can be handle without falling into a bad habit. Even though their addiction had no excuse in my eyes and I believed it was wrong, I now felt sympathetic towards them instead of judgmental. I was able to actually understand what they were going through and admire their strength for asking for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Thirty Nine Steps Analysis The First of Many Masterpieces Plot The film Thirty–Nine Steps is a brilliant adaptation of the adventurous but complicated novel written by Scottish author John Buchan. Director Alfred Hitchcock tells the story of central protagonist Richard Hanney, (played by Robert Donat) a Canadian visitor in 1930's London who sets off on an intense journey to prove his innocence. After shots are fired, Richard takes beautiful Annabelle Smith (played by Lucie Mannheim) back to his flat where she reveals she is a counter spy being chased by assassins and is responsible for the shots fired. This is where Annabella first mentionsthe Thirty–Nine steps but does not explain their significance. That night Richard's knife is used to stab Annabella in the back but she manages to give him a map of a tiny village in Scotland to flee to before dying. Learning that he is now the main suspect in her death, Richard boards a train for Scotland and kisses the only occupant Pamela (played by Madeleine Carroll) to throw off police. She frees herself from his arms, alerts the police but he manages to escape. That evening he stays with a poor farmers couple and the following day ends up at the house Annabella described. After telling his story to a seemingly respectable professor, he is shot and left for dead. Fortunately, the bullet is blocked by the farmers hymnbook in his left coat pocket. Nature's Passport The bottom line for lifestyle change is to expect that challenges will constantly occur. And expect that habits will be extremely difficult to break. Expect that Nature's six step formula has turned the corner on helping those who put forth passionverance to achieve lifestyle changes. The group participates in the H.O.W. program of Overeaters Anonymous. H.O.W. stands for the principles of honesty, open –mindedness, and willingness. The meeting took place at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, located at 2535 East Broadway St. in Pearland. The format for this meeting was an open meeting. The meeting was an informal, but structured meeting, observing both the 12–Step recovery approach, and the Overeaters Anonymous 12 Traditions. The only requirement for Overeaters Anonymous membership is the desire to stop eating compulsively. My principle motivations for attending this meeting included the self–awareness,... Closed meetings accept and consist of only recovering addicts. Regardless of the meeting type, these meetings have some general expectations: Every attendee deserves respect. Overeaters Anonymous utilizes a peer support system, reassuring each member that they are not alone, and are not the only ones who have an addiction to food. The goal is to remain abstinent with overeating. This accomplished by face to face meetings three times per week, sponsorship, in which the recovering person makes four telephone contacts per day with their sponsor, self–analysis writing exercises, as well as reference literature and eating ... We will first need to examine the problem and determine the steps needed to take in order to ensure the problem is solved satisfactorily. This is where the problem solving process will begin. For this assignment, I will be focusing on Scenario 1: "You have worked at your company for eleven (11) years. You have returned to college to earn a Bachelor's degree in order to increase your chances for a promotion. You are nearly finished with your degree, when a supervisor's position in a competing company becomes available in another state. The start date is in two (2) weeks, during your final exam period for your courses. The position offers a $15,000 per year salary increase, a car allowance, and relocation expenses. Your former supervisor works for the company and is recommending you for the position based on your outstanding job performance; if you want the job, it's yours. All of the other supervisors at this level in the company have Master's degrees, so you know that you would be expected to earn your Bachelor's degree and continue on to a Master's degree. Your present company offers tuition reimbursement, but the new company does not." (cite) For this particular scenario, I have been tasked with making a decision on whether or not I should change my job, an opportunity that will increase my salary; or stay in a position that will allow me to further my educational ... • 7. The 12 Step Program Alcoholics Anonymous The 12 step program Alcoholics Anonymous (AA )was born in 1934. Prohibition had been repealed and a man named Bill Watson drunkenly found his way to Manhattan Hospital. Bill was known to knock back quite a bit of whiskey every day and couldn 't seem to be able to quit. While he was at Manhattan Hospital he was given a new and considered experimental treatment for addiction of belladonna, which is a hallucinogen. Bill in his induced state yelled to God to help free him of alcohol. He reported seeing a bright light and feeling such serenity that Bill quit drinking alcohol. He went on to co–found Alcoholics Anonymous and based the principles off the evangelical Oxford Group which believed people were sinners, but with the help of God and confessing, a person could get on the proper path. AA was an answer to a huge void the medical world felt at the time in regard to people who drank heavily. Once alcoholism was named a disease in 1956 by the American Medical Association (AMA) AA grew and more hospitals sprung up wards for alcoholics for patients to detox with no other treatment offered. What someone in a ward for alcholhoics did receive was members showing up to support their fellow drinker and offering support and invitations to meetings. Thus began the road to calling alcoholism a disease and the first 12 step program AA. (14) I disagree with the notion that addiction to alcohol, drugs, sex, eating or other compulsive behaviors is a medical disease. Gene ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Passi / The One Hundred Steps I Cento Passi/The One Hundred Steps manages to convey the life of Peppino Impastato in a way that leaves us (as viewers) to be the ultimate judges of his character–– and retains a degree of emotionality that allows viewers to forge a human connection between themselves and Peppino Impastato as they form ideas about him; it is a strong and powerful call to action. I Cento Passi is effective because it is moving, it is nostalgic, and most importantly–– it's relatable. I think the most effective way to look at I Cento Passi is by starting at its conclusion and working back. I Cento Passi is first and foremost, a film, and it does not attempt to hide this. From the dialogues to the music–– it does not pretend to be a documentary. Yet, while... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For others, he is a true martyr, sacrificing intimate familial relations for his cause. We are left to draw our own conclusions about Peppino's value–– but that is precisely the goal. It is not Peppino's value as a person that is important, rather it is that his memory be preserved. Whether or not one agrees with the way he fought for change, the fact that he did all in his power to fight forces that unjustly overpowered him is a fact that cannot be erased. One of the most drawing things about the shift from color to black–and–white could be seen in the flags flying above the procession. It seems to me somewhat counter intuitive that as the color begins to fade from color to black–and–white that the red flags would become white–– and yet they do. White flags typically bring to mind symbolic defeat, surrender... but in this case, white might represent a lack of color. The flags that are raised no longer represent Peppino's ideology, rather they represent any and all ideologies. The flags could be any color–– they are merely a symbol of something other than themselves. In the same way, the story of Peppino Impastato can be "fitted over" another historical figure who dies for their cause. Once again, the narrative detailed within allows itself to be extended, and is left to viewer "interpretation." The distinction between I Cento Passi and other films that double as ... • 9. Analysis Of Small Steps Author Style To start off, Louis Sachar writes in many different styles in the different books he writes. There are many different books that he has written and has gotten many awards. Sachar won the Newbery Medal for one of his top selling books, called Holes. Another book that he is written is called Small Steps. Small Steps is about how you have one thing at a time in life and not do so many things at once. In the book Small Steps, Louis Sachar uses figurative language, conflict to help keep the reader engaged, and uses the same character's name in multiple of his books as his writing style. One style that Louis Sachar uses in the book Small Steps is conflict. Conflict is a struggle between opposing forces or when two characters in a story get in a fist fight or just a fight over a conversation. In the book Small Steps, an example of conflict is on page 217, "She picked up her cup and tossed the contents at him, splattering him with coffee and cream." Kira got mad at Armpit because Armpit said that Kira should consider another profession besides singing and Kira was really upset that Armpit said that. Kira tossed the cup of coffee at him while everyone in the store stared at Armpit with coffee all over his shirt. This relates to the author's style because Sachar likes to use a lot conflict in his books to keep the reader engaged. Another example of conflict in the book Small Steps is on page 199, "Moses whacked him on the side of his head. X–Ray gets hit on the side of his head very hard by Moses, who is a man who wants the counterfeit tickets that X–Ray has. X–Ray's glasses broke, and his tickets were stolen by Moses, while X–Ray lay on the floor after he got punched in the face. Sachar uses a lot of conflict in the books he writes. In addition to conflict, another style that Louis Sachar uses in his books, especially Small Steps and Holes, is figurative language. Figurative language is a language that uses words of expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. It also uses exaggerations or alterations to make a linguistic point. An example of figurative language in Small Steps ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Explain The Two Step Flow Theory The Two Step Flow theory dates back to the 1940s where Paul Lazarsfeld, Bernard Berelson and Hazel Gaudet wrote a book called People's Choice that summarized the analysis of the November 1940 Presidential elections. The research revealed that people are more likely to be influenced by other people rather than the mass media. They called these 'other' people; opinion leaders. (Scannel, 2007). The theory is a key theory in understanding people's decision making processes, in this case being the voting behaviours. The theory suggests that firstly, opinion leaders pay close attention to mass media and then they pass on their interpretation of media messages to the public, influencing their decisions. Unlike the hypodermic needle theory, the two step flow theory acknowledges that audiences are active participants in the communication process and are seen as a part of the society. Having the theory defined, the question that the paper aims to dissects is how relevant is this theory in the world of modern communications today? The 39 Steps was originally a book by John Buchan set before the First World War, the book was later adapted into a film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It was a serious book and film following a bachelor called Richard Hannay who meets a mysterious German woman at a play, the women begs him to take her home with him and later reveals she is a spy trying to discover the truth about an organisation trying to steal British defence plans and something called the 39 steps. There was a lot of breaking the fourth wall to keep to audience involved because the main priority of this play was to entertain not to tell a story, in fact a lot of the story was left out and left the audience's imagination. In the climax of the play the villain is shot dead by a mysterious hand that you could see creep out of the curtain and shot him. His final words were "IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A CAST OF FOUR!" as all four actors were on stage so it couldn't have been anyone the audience were aware of. There was banter at one point between the actors and the audience where Hannay was making a speech to an invisible audience but also us at the same time, he asked what was supposed to be a rhetorical question he asked "Shall we not just enjoy this period of peace?" and someone shouted out "YEAH!" and he looked directly at them and pointed and said "thank you kind sir!" the actors made the audience feel it was acceptable to interact with them even unpredictably. Using a very limited amount of props and only a small end on stage, they managed to create multiple characters and locations; they had a lot of recurring jokes and used the rule of three and a lot of slapstick humour. Step Brothers from start to finish is exactly this displaying 2 outrageously comical actors in Will Ferrell and John C Reilly bickering back and forth trying to learn how to cope with one another. The glory of this film comes from the constant one liners that make no sense but fit the film perfectly, the childish behavior, and the elementary school comebacks mixed in with the adult language which adds a different but great comical sense that few movies have been able to portray before. Such as when Ferrell refers to Reilly as a "Big, fat, curly–headed f***". This line had me rolling on the floor due to the seriousness of Ferrell and the reaction of Reilly and the fact that it is a simple 3rd grade insult with an F–bomb thrown in there that just makes it all that more funny. Although Talladega Nights and the Anchorman trilogy had better storylines none compare to the pure comedy that Step Brothers provides. Essay on Live Evaluation of 39 Steps Evaluation of a live performance: The performance I went to see was "The 39 Steps" on the 25th of March, at the Criterion Theatre in London, it's produced by Gaumont British. The original 39 steps was an action spy novel written by John Buchan in 1915. Then Alfred Hitchcock produced a film, then the play was written and when I first saw the play it was a bit of a shock seeing as the book and film are set as thrillers and the play is very much a comedy. The play is set in 1914 and Europe is on the brink of war. The main protagonist Richard Hannay is bored with life, until he runs into a mysterious German woman names Annabella Schmidt at the theatre. Richard then takes the woman home with him and she reveals that she is tracking down ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This I thought was a very different, but clever way of expressing large scenes. Occasionally a follow spot was used to highlight some parts of the of the play for comical effect. At the beginning Richard is asked to look out the window by Annabella and when he does two actors run on stage with a lamp post and as soon as they are on the spot light is on and when they leave it's off again, they did this to give a sense of perspective from the window to the street and also to take the mick out of classic thrillers. The set and props where very compact and were built and moved on and off by the cast because they are designed to be transferred by one person. The props where all cleverly done, for instance they made a bridge out of three ladders, a train out of four boxes and a house from just one door. The door I thought was one of the best props used because the cast managed to make a fairly small stage appear huge just by moving the door and pretending each time that it was a new room every time they passed through it. At one point in the play Richard and Pamela ask the scottish landlords for a sandwich and they come back with a loaf of bread cut in two with one slice of lettuce in the middle, this was such a simple idea but made a big deal and a laugh out of it The rhythm of the production was extremely fast paced due to the size of the cast and comedy. • 15. My First 12 Step Meeting For posterity's sake, I tried to recall my first 12–step meeting and have concluded that it was most likely the year 1996, it was cold in the little town of Altoona. The clubhouse was strange, dark, smelled of coffee, and full of smoke there, the people were all so different, but all of them seemed to know some secret code, plus they seemed to talk as if reading bumper–stickers. As I "kept coming back," I began to feel more comfortable, understand what was going on, and want what these people had. People at these meetings were open, appeared comfortable in their own skins, and had such, dramatic, fascinating stories that were dark, yet somehow uplifting. Since that time, I have been to a plethora of various types of meetings at various locations, but there is a theme throughout of trust, and a bond of acceptance that makes one feel welcome wherever one goes to a meeting. Therefore, I had a plan to go to Allentown with my fiancГ©e to an NA meeting he used to go to on Saturday night, however, as things sometimes happens, this did not go as planned. First, I turned in all of my assignments and studied well for any exams or quizzes. Second, I managed to study for at least 2 hours for almost everyday of the week. This step not only helped me get step 1 done, but it also increased my ability to learn more material. Third, I met with professors about once a week for additional help over course material. Critique Of Pozzoli Case: Inventive Step Test Critique of Pozzoli case (Inventive step test) Introduction A patent is an exclusive right granted for an invention, product or process that provides a new way of doing something, or that offers a new technical solution to a problem. An invention in general must fulfill certain criteria in order to be protected by a patent. For example, the Patents Act, 1970 in S. 2(1) (j) defines invention as a new product or process involving an inventive step and capable of industrial application. In other words, an invention in order to be patentable must show an element of novelty, must show "an inventive step", and must be of practical use. Particularly, the Patents Act, 1970 defines "inventive step" as a feature of an invention that involves technical advance as compared to the existing knowledge or having economic significance or both and that makes the invention not obvious to a person skilled in the art. • 19. Analysis Of The Film 'The Thirty-Nine Steps' Hitchcock described his film, The Thirty–Nine Steps, as "a film of episodes. He made sure the content of every scene was very solid, so that each one would be a little film in itself" (Truffaut, p.95). The sequence "The Crofter and His Wife" is one of the sections that acts as a film within the film. The central theme of this sequence is character entrapment. At around mark 26:30, the scene opens with a view of the countryside which appears to be picturesque and peaceful. However, it is clear that the countryside is also remote and uninhabited. As Hannay walks towards Alt–na–Shellach he finds himself at a very small house which seems to be the only house in the area and soon figures out that it belongs to a poor crofter and his wife. Hannay asks the crofter if he knows where the professor's house is. The crofter informs him that it is 14 miles away from their current location and this is why Hannay pays to stay the night instead of traveling at night. Both the crofter and his wife are distanced from society. In addition, the isolated environment in which the house is placed is an example of the theme of entrapment. As this scene progresses, Hannay is introduced to the crofter's wife, Margaret. It is clear to Hannay and the view that there is a significant age gap between the couple. As Margaret prepares supper, she engages in a conversation with Hannay. Although Margaret did not grow up in the countryside, her husband does not approve when she talks about outside places such as London. She explains, "he says it's best not to think of such things and all the wickedness that goes on there." Margaret then asks, "Is it true that all the London ladies paint their toenails?" It is evident that Margaret is physically and mentally entrapped in the countryside with a man much older than her. While the crofter is praying, he grows suspicious when he notices the glances exchanged by Hannay and Margaret at the dinner table. Hitchcock uses shot–reverse techniques as the camera captures the expressions on the character's faces. The crofter steps out of the house and says he needs to check the barn door. When an individual believes, and expects, to have positive effects from a certain drug (e.g., drinking alcohol to reduce stress and anxiety), the likelihood that the individual will abuse the drug is extremely high. Sociocultural factors also play a vital role in how frequently a substance is used, with family and friends being the most influential. A broken family home (e.g., marital problems, parent/sibling alcohol or drug use, and legal or psychiatric problems) can have a tremendous negative effect on a child and the decisions they make. A lack of emotional support from parents is found to increase drug use, whereas the lack of parental monitoring if often associated with higher drug use (Kring, 2014). The idea of being "popular" and having a ton of friends seems to be a common goal for the majority of adolescents and young adults. Social influence is explained by the fact that having peers who drink, influences drinking behavior; however, it is also known that individuals will choose friends with drinking patterns similar to their own. While growing up, most of us have always been told to choose our friends wisely; however, they neglected to tell us how difficult this can be. In order to overcome this obstacle (milkman does not believe in him) and achieve his objectives (gets the uniform and runs away), he chooses to tell the milkman a fake love story about run away couples, which is more acceptable to ordinary people and easier to provoke sympathy. He pulled the milkman to his side, lowered his voice and acted like he trusts him. The milkman's facial expression changed and seemed to believe this story immediately. "Oh no!" The actor had sorrowful looks on his face to show that he has empathy for Hannay. "Here you go! Here you go!" I remember he repeated this line for several times. Then he quickly took off his white uniform and gave it right away. Hannay looked surprised at first and gave the milkman some money in the pocket of the uniform to show his gratefulness for the help. In the end, when the milkman realized that the money was his money, he felt cheated and exaggeratedly shouted, "Oh!! It is MY money! He gave me MY money!" The performance created a comedic execution. • 24. Naomi Carter: A Short Story She sat on her unmade bed, swishing her legs back and forth as she waited for Naomi to finish her makeup. Naomi had her face positioned directly in front of the mirror, her hand remaining steady and fluid as she swept her black eyeliner across her eyelid. They had class in ten minutes, but Naomi apparently ignored that fact. Carter knew her roommate spent a solid hour in front of the small mirror already; the girl curled her blonde hair in rippling waves and took her time on applying her contour and highlight despite it being so early in the morning and their destination being a small poetry class. Naomi was pretty though. That was her thing. Her trademark. Her smile was blinding, her hair was bouncy and soft, and her body possessed the grace that you only got from the combination of years of dedicated dancing and natural talent. She didn't just apply a pink lip and some shimmery highlight to her cheekbones though. She was naturally a force of beauty. • 25. Our Iceberg Is Melting, By John Kotter "Once upon a time a colony of penguins was living in the frozen Antarctic on an iceberg near what we call today Cape Washington." From the first sentence of John Kotter's bestselling book, Our Iceberg Is Melting, it is difficult to tell that one is about to read a great fable about how to manage change in business as well as everyday life. ! The following summary will explain the key moments of the fable and how they relate to our lives. First, let's introduce some of the more important penguins – the Leadership Council members. Louis, the head of the Leadership Council, could perhaps be considered the CEO of the penguin colony. Alice is a smart, aggressive member ofthe council, and is Fred's loyal confidant. Buddy is a young penguin council member who may not be the brightest bulb in the box, but brings an element of trust among the council members. Fred is the most curious of all of the penguins; although he was an 'unknown' penguin in the beginning, he ultimately plays a very important role in the change process. Jordan, also known as the "Professor," was the brains of the council; he could perhaps be considered the 'researcher' of the group. Although the penguins start out simply as individuals, in the end, they are a well working team capable of effectively managing change. Fred, a quite curious penguin, studies the wonderful iceberg that the penguins consider home. He comes across a problem which suggests that their beloved iceberg may be in danger of ... The final two steps of Alcoholics Anonymous involve "taking inventory" of your life and understanding why you did what you did when drunk. These are called the drinker's motivations. Step 12 talks about three major parts the alcoholic should have accomplished. They are having had a spiritual awakening, practicing the lessons learned in Alcoholics Anonymous, and carrying the message of recovery to other alcoholics. The final step seems like a lifetime step. It is practiced by the drinker, along with the other steps for the rest of their life. It stresses the amount of work they must put in for the program to work for them. It is said that, once completed, the alcoholic has a lifetime of recovery. Alcoholism is a disease that most alcoholics will admit never goes away. Alcoholics need ongoing treatment and support. There is always a chance to "fall off the wagon." Alcoholics should enter a long–term treatment facility, go through detox, join Alcoholics Anonymous and attend meetings regularly. The longer an alcoholic receives treatment, the better the chances for becoming sober and being able to stay that way. In conclusion, though the 12–steps may be a life changer for some. The 12–steps are not a one–size fits all method, in fact for many it has failed to suit their needs. The best way to stay sober is simply through abstinence. It is the only true "cure" of alcoholism.

Using The Root Cause Analysis And `` 5 Whys `` I must admit, I am uncomfortable putting work conflicts on the internet, and even more uncomfortable exposing personal relationship conflicts that should inherently be private. I also do not watch the news, because I do not trust it as a source of information. Thus, for the purposes of this essay, I shall describe the most recent inner conflict of note that I have experienced instead, and analyse it using the "Root Cause Analysis" and "5 Whys" strategies that were discussed in this week's reading. While it is not a particularly recent source of conflict – it happened about three or four years ago – it resulted in some life–changing events. I shall briefly describe the timeline: in January 2012, I move to New Zealand to study for a diploma in 3D Animation and VFX. By November 2012, I had decided that I no longer wanted to be studying towards a qualification in the VFX industry, and decided to enrol at one of the universities in Auckland for a degree in Hospitality instead. By March 2013, I had turned right around, and enrolled in a different school for a degree in none other than 3D Animation and VFX. Using the "Root Cause Analysis" and "5 Whys" strategies, I shall explore the reasons for these changes I made – what made me deflect from my original course, and then later why I came back to it. Many of these observations are made in hindsight, so may sound more logical and rational than I truly was at the time. First, I shall consider why I left my first course of study: ... The story is set in Britain during the 1930s and the stage production shows points to this in a few ways. The most noticeable hints I found towards the time period was the costumes, which is what tends to draw my eye a lot. Alfred Hitchcock's film adaptation of The 39 Steps was very much in the 'film noir' style. Black and white colour scheme, somewhat melodramatic acting, the whole lot. While the theatre production is not completely in this style, it still makes some allusions towards Hitchcock's film.
