OUTLINE
Thesis statement: In Dante's Inferno, the first part of the Divine Comedy, Dante develops many
themes throughout the adventures of the travelers. The Inferno is a work that Dante used to express
the theme on his ideas of God's divine justice. God's divine justice is demonstrated through the
punishments of the sinners the travelers encounter.

The city–state was divided at the time into Guelphs––the party of the pope––and Ghibellines––the
party of the Holy Roman Emperor. The Alighieris belonged to the former party until they were
driven out in the late 1200s.
The Guelphs assumed power but split themselves up into Whites and Blacks, the Whites taking the
antipapal position of the Ghibellines. Dante eventually cast his lot in with the Whites. When the
Blacks seized power in Florence in 1302, they condemned him to death, forcing him to leave his
wife, Gemma Donati, and their four children in his beloved native city for the rest of his life. Dante
spent most of his time in exile writing new pieces of literature (Siegal). It is believed that around
1307 he stops work on Convivio to begin The Comedy (later known as The Divine Comedy). He
completed it shortly before he dies in 1321. The Divine Comedy is
recognized as his greatest literature accomplishment not only for the multitude of themes and
literature firsts, but also for the beauty of his writing style.
With his writing style and the implementation of some literature firsts, Dante assured his name in
history. His mastery of language, his sensitivity to the sights and sounds of nature, and his infinite
store of information allow him to capture and draw the reader into the realm of the terrestrial Hell.
His vast store of knowledge of Greek mythology and the history of his society assists Dante in the

Review Of ' Hairspray ' By John Waters
From Grease to Rent, musical comedies have been known to enlighten viewers on specific issues
while keeping the context of the musical pleasurable and easy to enjoy. The 2007 musical film
Hairspray is a satire of Baltimore in the early 1960's while going through the Civil Rights
movement. Through this romantic comedy, the agon of African–American civil rights and other
power struggles among race gender, and class are depicted through certain comic techniques to keep
the musical lighthearted but meaningful.
The 2007 play, Hairspray, is based off of a 2002 Broadway musical which was ultimately based off
the 1988 comedy film by John Waters also named Hairspray. It begins in 1962 just before the Civil
Rights movements took place. A plump teenager named Tracy Turnblad wants to audition for a local
television dancing show, "The Corny Collins Show,"but her mother Edna won't let her follow her
dreams of being famous. Edna thinks she will get hurt because she doesn 't look like the perfect girl
they typically allow on the show, but rather a plus sized version of them. Regardless of her weight,
Tracy 's dance moves get her on the show where she meets her crush, Link. With plump Tracy on the
show and new changes in the air, the theme of equality reoccurs as Tracy fights to make the show
integrated, causing "Negro Day" on the show to be an everyday occurrence. Along with its camp
aesthetic, the comedy is full of slapstick humor and parabasis recurrence to demonstrate the main

Inferno Research Paper
Inferno Research Paper Anthony K. Cassell stated in his critical essay titled "Farinata" that "the
methods of punishment in Dante's Hell are exquisitely diverse." The cantos in Inferno are focused
on Circles or subdivisions of Hell that describe specific punishments for the suffering souls based
upon the sin they committed. The deeper into Hell, the worse the sins that were committed, therefore
the agonies of the punishments are greater. In Inferno, Dante brings the issue of sin into light by
giving instances of sins he has taken note of. He places the guilty souls at different levels of Hell,
depending on which crimes he believes are the worst to commit, showing "how Dante portrayed his
understanding of God's justice" (Cassell). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pope Nicholas says he is guilty of simony, so Dante does not pity him. Dante tells him to "stay stuck
there, for you are rightly punished" (XIX.97). This is when Dante first begins to realize that God's
justice is present is Hell. He then speaks out against all corrupt churchmen, and claims if he were
not restrained, he would use even harsher words. Dante then becomes amazed, if not pleasured, with
some of the punishments. In the Circle containing Thieves, Dante watches in amazement as a
serpent bites a sinner between the shoulders, causing the soul to instantly catch fire, burn up, and
then rise from the ashes to return to the pit of the serpents. In the First Ring of the Ninth Circle of
Hell, called Caina, named after Cain who killed his brother Abel in Genesis, those who betrayed
their kin are punished. The souls must stand in ice frozen up to their heads. Dante witnesses twins
frozen face to face, butting their heads against each other in rage. Dante accidentally kicks Bocca
degli Abati in the face, then leans down to apologize. Once he recognizes this soul, he tears out his
hair before leaving him in the ice. With the constant rebuking from Virgil, Dante has learned to not
pity the damned souls. He learns to reconcile his sympathy for the suffering with the harsh violence
of divine justice as he begins to see that the punishments fit the crimes committed. In Canto VI of
Inferno, the Third Circle of Hell rains filth and excrement, and

Elizabeth I, Monarch Of England, And Marie De L '...
Elizabeth I, monarch of England, and Marie de l'Incarnation, a French nun, both invoked God and
other forms of religious power to stake their claims to authority. Elizabeth's role as a queen came at
a time when her country was going through political turmoil. Marie's role as a missionary in New
France was to civilize the indigenous people. Although working to better their countries, both of
these writers are vastly different due to their social positions. While Elizabeth had the substantial
task of ruling over her country, Marie was serving her country as a missionary; however, both
writers utilize religion to accomplish their various duties.
Marie utilized her understanding of religion and the Native's understanding of religion to build a
relationship built on trust. She arrived in modern day Quebec in the late 1630's as a missionary from
her country to educate and civilize the Natives there to match European traditions. Marie found
similarities with the indigenous people as even though they didn't have a God, they had their own
forms of worship. In Letter 65 to her son, she answers his questions regarding the "Savages'" beliefs
on divinity. "Certain ones adored the sun and offered its sacrifices. Others had recourse to certain
spirits who they said provided over the woods but all obeyed their dreams as a divinity" (Marie,
368). Even though the Natives did not have any exposure to "the True God" before they met the
Europeans, they still believed in some sort of higher

The Meaning Of Liturgy In Here Be The Dragons By Michael...
The meaning of liturgy may not be debatable but how that definition functions becomes contestable
as it is performed in different settings. Thus, when interpreting a liturgical theology, it would figure,
that the same notion would apply. Joyce Zimmerman writes, "...Who interprets liturgy? Is the
realization that the practice of liturgy involves a number of competencies at a number of levels."
Liturgy by its nature is not static there by constitutes a multileveled evaluation and approach when
interpreting. There are no set parameters or guidelines that designate the functional aspects of the
liturgy. Liturgy has the potential to take on any form it desires in order to accomplish the objective
of moving people to discourse. Liturgy has this Michael Jackson appeal. It has the ability to conform
to certain parameters when needed but always functioning within itself to meet its on transcendent
perspective. Like Michael Jackson, liturgy can masks itself in a litany of otherness in order to make
itself more appealing to others in order to further the discourse. James Baldwin highlights Michael's
chameleon like abilities in Here be the Dragons,
The Michael Jackson cacophony is fascinating in that it is not about Jackson at all. I hope he has the
good sense to know it and the good fortune to snatch his life out of the jaws of a carnivorous
success. He will not swiftly be forgiven for having turned so many tables, for he damn sure grabbed

Dante's Beasts
The Beasts and Monsters in Dante's Inferno
The Inferno is the first section of Dante's three–part poem, The Divine Comedy. Throughout Dante's
epic journey into the depths of Inferno he encounters thirty monsters and five hybrid creatures. The
most significant of these monsters are of central importance to his journey and to the narrative, as
they not only challenge Dante's presence in Inferno, but are custodians of Hell, keeping in order or
guarding the "perduta gente". In this essay I am concentrating on these prominent beasts, namely
Minos, Cerberus, Plutus and Geryon, establishing why they feature in Dante's eschatological vision
and discussing the sources which influenced his inclusion of these particular creatures. These four ...

His serpentine torso and writhing tail connect him with the previous monsters that Dante has
encountered. The twisting movement of Geryon's tail reminds the reader of the manner with which
Minos wraps his tail around the sinners, and the description of Cerberus as "il gran vermo" adds to
this snaky imagery associated with these beasts. The power the monsters have in their tails would
have been meaningful for Dante's readers as it was commonly noted in medieval times that a beast's
tail showed its ferocity and held much of its strength. This is illustrated by Brunetto Latini's
descriptions of the dragon and the lion in his Li Livres dou Tresor, as well as in Revelations where
the power of the horses lay...in their tails; for their tails were like snakes.(6)
This association with serpents is also significant as the serpent was the first deceiver (7),
establishing the deception and terror connected with these monsters which adds to the uncertain and
disordered atmosphere in Inferno.
Dante's readers would have been familiar with the beasts he discusses in Inferno as they are firmly

Analysis Of Hairspray
When I saw Hairspray the Musical there were three things that I noticed that were important in
making the theatrical performance. Those three things were the acting, production, and how the
actors made us, the audience, feel. Each of these things contribute greatly to any performance. I feel
that this production of Hairspray hit each of these notes very well. The most important part of a
theatrical performance is the actors. Without the actors there wouldn't be a show. In Hairspray there
were many actors who were key to this show. Some of the top characters in the musical were Tracy,
Edna, Velma, and Amber. The first actor, who played Tracy, was not a bad actor, but I feel that she
could have been more full out. I noticed that while dancing and singing, she was not doing it full
out. It almost felt as though she and many others were marking the performance throughout the
dances and singing part. The next actor, who played Edna, was amazingly funny and full out. He
was the highlight of the show. The third actor, who played Velma, made me feel a disliking of her,
which is what is meant to be felt because she is a controlling, racist, and body shaming boss, which
nobody should like. I feel like the way she presented her character was right, but she could have
added more, almost to the point the audience hates her. The last actor, who played Amber, was spot
on, her character was meant to be a queen bee and act as though she has power because her parent
does. I feel like the

The Classic Inferno By Dante Alighieri
The classic Inferno by Dante Alighieri is beautifully woven to reflect the realities or unrealities of
the time. The various circles of hell are used by the writer to tell the tale in a free–flowing manner
(Havely, 98). Interesting, however, is the manner in which he describes the characters such that they
are seen to be facing tragedies in their life in hell. The writer categorizes the different types of sins
that people can commit and subjects the characters to various punishments, each of which is in a
separate circle in hell. Lawall opines that the writer uses a style that makes the reader envision
themselves in the poem (Lawall, 17). In so doing, the writer subjects the characters to relatively
tragic states even though they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The story narrates that Francesca and Paolo are both punished in hell for their adultery and thus the
subjection to the circle of lust (Alighieri, 1012). She expounds that she had been married to Paolo's
brother Gianciotto. Francesca discloses that she was not shy of expressing her feelings towards
Paolo, who she loved even though she was married to his brother. One day, she reveals, her husband
caught them together inside her bedroom and was sure that they were lovers. Francesca opened the
door and pretended that all was well before her husband. Unknown to Francesca, Paolo had got
stuck in a ladder as he attempted to run away. Gianciotto then killed the two of them, although he
had not intended to kill his wife. The circumstance that led to her death is an emphasis of the beauty
of love. When Gianciotto jumped to slay Paolo with his sword, Francesca rushed in between and
faced the death first. The husband was too disappointed and ended up killing Paolo as well. The
portrayal of the two characters as lovebirds and the lack of love between Francesca and her husband
show the reality that was then (Alighieri, 1013). The writer further says, through Francesca, that
Gianciotto was thrown into the circle of Caina for killing his family members. This assertion, in
character is a balanced move to portray both parties (Francesca and Gianciotto) as losers in the fight.
However, the fact that

Analysis Of ' Rappaccini 's Daughter '
Lauren Thomas
Professor Saunders
ENGL 231
October 23rd, 2014
The Theme of Love in "Rappaccini's Daughter" Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story "Rappaccini's
Daughter" holds the theme of love at its forefront. The story delineates the struggles, both internal
and external, that Giovanni Guasconti faces when courting a young woman named Beatrice
Rappaccini. Beatrice's love of a plant and her father's love of science are conflicts that also highlight
the theme of love. Along with these conflicts, Hawthorne uses the theme of love to pose the question
of whether or not love is worth fighting for as well as critiquing a tragic flaw in romantic
relationships. These elements combine together to make a compelling argument that love is simply
not worth the struggle it imposes. The first conflict that arises in the short story is the internal
conflict of Giovanni. Giovanni moves from his home in order to study at the University of Padua
and sees Beatrice Rappaccini underneath the window of his new home. The conflict Giovanni faces
stems from his affection and blooming love for Beatrice. Giovanni sees Beatrice's beauty as
"brilliant, so vivid in its character, that she glowed amid the sunlight" (pg. 7). However, her beauty
is rivaled by her horror. Whenever a creature is near her breath, it dies. Giovanni begins questioning
whether or not loving Beatrice is a wise decision. Her horror keeps him at bay while her beauty and
her personality draw him in closer. The second conflict that

My Catholic Church Experience Paper
On April 11th, 2017, I attended mass in the Blessed Edmund Chapel. Unlike other weekday masses,
this one was scheduled at 7 AM because of it being Holy Tuesday. Never having been to a Catholic
mass before, all of this was a new experience. Growing up in a non–denominational Christian
household, I did not have a clue what to expect. From this experience, I was able to gain insight into
the Catholic practices and how they conduct their masses. It also helped to expand on the teachings
we discussed in religion class. When you first walked into the Blessed Edmund Rice Chapel, you
see chairs lined up in front of the altar and podium. Underneath a majority of the chairs, lay a bible
to follow along with the sermon of the mass. In front, in front of the altar, there were two candles
that a Brother lit during the mass. Even though the chapel being small might seem like a
disadvantage, I thought that this feature offered a more personal and close experience. Up on the
altar, in between the candles, there was a wooden figure of Jesus on the cross. It was in a way
similar to churches I have attended before, except there was no altar or podium, and was ... Show

It was interesting to finally see the Catholic religion in practice rather than discussing it. I learned
how the worship differs from the fellowship church and at a Catholic Mass. This was my first time
experiencing music like this and also having a service conducted like this. It took a shorter period of
time than I was used to and involved less singing. Attending a Catholic mass definitely helped me to
better understand the practices of Catholics. It taught me more about scripture and also provided me
with an insight to a different religion's customs. From this experience I will take away a new
knowledge of the religion the college I attend represents. It also showed me what a Brother exactly

Responsibility to Others versus Individual Selfishness
The 20th century philosopher Emanuel Levinas, responding to the horrors of the Holocaust,
considers our ethical responsibility to other humans as follows: "The Ego loses its sovereign
coincidence with self, its identification where consciousness comes back triumphantly to itself to
reside in itself...The challenge to self is precisely reception of the absolutely other...[T]he Other hails
me and signifies to me...by its destitution, an order. Its presence is the summons to respond...To be
Me/Ego thenceforth signifies being unable to escape from responsibility." ("Signification and Sense"
32–33). What Levinas is trying to explain is an individual is a person, or human, by how others
perceive that individual, thus an individual is ethically responsible for others as well as others to the
individual or is otherwise a loss.
Throughout Dante's The Divine Comedy 1: Hell and Shakespeare's Macbeth, the idea of the
responsibility to others versus an individual's selfishness is a constant debate. In both Dante's The
Divine Comedy 1: Hell and Shakespeare's Macbeth, the responsibility to others is something that is
expected. In Dante's The Divine Comedy 1: Hell, Dante is guided through Hell and learns how
various sins are punished, the traitors being near the bottom. In Shakespeare's Macbeth, Macbeth is
told his destiny to become king, and then face internal conflicts of the various murders he performed
in order to achieve the power of being king. Dante's The Divine Comedy 1: Hell and

The Easter Vigil: Holy Family Catholic Church
The Easter Triduum takes place during Holy Week, which commemorates step by step the last
events in the life of Jesus. It is a very symbolic ritual because it reenacts His passion, death and
resurrection. The Easter Triduum, which lasts three days, includes the Easter Vigil, the most
important of all Christian celebrations. The celebration, which takes place on the night of Holy
Saturday, commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Although this is a very long service, I

The Paschal Candle reminds us of the resurrection of Christ, the light a symbol of life, Christ as the
light of the world that comes to illuminate our lives with his Resurrection. This was followed by the
procession, the congregation followed the priests and ministers, a deacon carried the Paschal
Candle. I would say that at this point, the catechumens had the most important role in the
celebration because they were about to be welcomed into the life of the Church.
Another important part of the celebration took place inside the temple, the Exultet or Easter
Proclamation was sung by a member of the choir. In the past, a priest or a deacon has sung the
Exultet, so this was new to me. The Exultet is a song of hope and triumph, because Christ has
overcome death. The Exultet is followed by the Liturgy of the Word, which consisted in readings
from the Old Testament, the epistle and the Gospel. The readings summarize the history of
Salvation. For example, the reading from Genesis described creation, the reading from the Exodus
the liberation of Egypt and the Gospel proclaimed the Resurrection of Christ. After each reading
psalms were sung. However, during this celebration there were only 4 readings. During the reading
of the Gospel, candles were relit to remind us the resurrection of Christ. The priest gave a very short
homily and continued with the Liturgy of Baptism, the

Essay about The Jesus I Never Knew by Phillip Yancey
The Jesus I Never Knew by Phillip Yancey
Yancey starts out with the image of Jesus. When he was young he had envisioned Jesus to have
angelic features such as, young, handsome, and a compassionate face. It wasn't until he entered into
a Christian college, that he was introduced to the real image of Jesus. I had an immediate connection
with Yancey. I too had an image of Christ in my head, which consisted of Hollywood portrayals and
those in classical paintings. It wasn't till I engaged myself at a Christian college, that I have now
received a new and more accurate picture of Christ. His book, The Jesus I Never Knew, questions
the reader with the thought, "How many Christians today are in the same position, not fully

Unfortunately, this fact is so true of our society today, but Yancey goes on to show how Jesus makes
an extra effort to reach out to he poor. He gives a list, which he got from another writer, on the
advantages of being poor. This list really made an impact on me. It showed me how I need to be
more open to what God has to say, and not so involved with the materialistic and secular views of
today. I need to focus on what God has planned for me, and not make my focus to be what other
people think of me. "Strength, good looks, connections, and the competitive instinct may bring a
person success in a society like ours, but those very qualities may block entrance to the kingdom of
heaven" (Yancey 114). In Jesus' Resurrection, Yancey gives some personal life experience to
connect with the reader, and explain the significance of Easter Sunday. He tells the story of how his
cat died on Easter Sunday when he was young. It was on this day that Yancey learned what he called
"the ugly world," irreversible. Then later on in his life he ends up loosing three friends in one year.
All three died in different situations, but it was a difficult time for Yancey. He uses the deaths of his
friends as another event that is irreversible. He compares the loss of his cat and friends to the feeling
of loss the disciples had when Jesus died. The disciples grieved for Jesus' death just as Yancey did
for his cat and friends,

Theseus And The Minotaur
There are many examples of heroes throughout history and in story books that convey great
messages, but what makes your leaders heroes? There are many attributes that make a hero but there
are three main areas. To be a hero, one must be willing to make many sacrifices, be humble and not
expect anything from the actions, and make positive changes. To be a hero means to sacrifice
something for someone else no matter the circumstances or dangers. An example of this is in the
myth Theseus and the Minotaur. It gives a great example of sacrifice and heroism. Powerful king
Minos of Crete demands Athenian women and men every year to feed to the Minotaur. When
Theseus heard about this, he was not happy. He took the place of one of the sacrificed men and went
to the labyrinth of the Minotaur to try and kill the beast himself. Theseus then expressed his feelings
of frustration by saying saying, "When it is time to send the next tribute, I will go as one of them
and I vow that it is the last time the Minotaur will be fed with the flesh of any of our people."
Theseus was strong and was willing to put himself in danger for the safety of his people. Not many
people have the courage to sacrifice themselves. Parents make sacrifices every day. Think of how
hard mothers or fathers works to make money, to keep the kids happy, to feed them, to clean up after
everyone, to get their kids where they what to go. My mom makes sacrifices everyday. She takes my
brother dance right after a long

Analysis Of Hairspray
Hairspray (1988) – SYNOPSIS Hairspray is a film by John Waters that stars a number of actors and
actresses; some fresh, some old, and some who disappear into obscurity after this film about 1960s
Baltimore and its segregation. Ricki Lake plays a pleasantly plump high school girl in the early 60s
named Tracey Turnblatt. Her mother, played by the character actor formerly known as Divine, irons
and cleans neighbors' clothes for a living and Tracey's father, portrayed by Jerry Stiller, owns the
Hardy Harr–Harr Joke–shop. Her and friend Penny Pingleton, performed by Leslie Ann Powers,
watch a teen dance show called the Corny Collins Show, where Negro Day is the last Thursday of
every month, hosted by Miss Motormouth Maybelle, Ruth Brown, because the 1960s was
segregated leaving the show to be almost white only. Tracey and Penny audition to be on the show's
council. Tracey is chosen and makes Amber Von–Tussle, Colleen Fitzpatrick, jealous. Tracey
eventually ends up going steady with Amber's boyfriend, Link, Michael St. Gerard, and gaining
popularity on top of it, fueling Amber more. She runs against her for Miss Auto Show 1963. Tracey
wins, but due to a race riot at Amber's parents', Sonny Bono and Debbie Harry, own Titled Acres,

The Divine Comedy By Dante Aleghiri
Dante Aleghiri 's Divine Comedy is widely taught and written about. In it Dante, the author, details
his trip through Hell, Purgatory, and then Paradise. The Divine Comedy was written during Dante 's
exile from his beloved city of Florence Italy. The work itself is read at various different levels. One
could read it as a theological work, a political work, simply as a poetic work, or even as a
philosophical work. In his work, "Dante's Paradiso: No Human Beings Allowed" philosophy
professor Bruce Silver argues that, " Dante is not a philosopher," instead he just deals with
philosophical issues, "including the relation between reasoning well and happiness." Dr. Jason
Aleksander, the philosophy department chair at Saint Xavier 's University, would disagree, stating,
"In short, for Dante, wisdom, 'the body of philosophy, ' results from the proper ordering of earthly
desires or, in other words, 'from the order among the moral virtues. '" Aleksander sees Dante as a
philosopher tackling philosophical issues and because he takes that stance he interprets Dante
differently than Silver does. Though both see Dante 's work as philosophical they take differing
stances on certain points and actually tackle the work in two different ways. Silver makes concise
arguments towards Dante trying to deal with the balance between reason and faith. He specifically
talks about, "the relation between reasoning well and happiness." Silver uses several different
philosophers to prove his point,

Personally, I did not go into this part of the service with a good attitude because of the glow–in–the–
dark theme service. I did not see how this would aid my worship or improve it by any means, but I
still decided to go of course. The pastor was very inviting in the welcome and then showed a
worship video. I liked this video on worship because it helped get my mind in the right mindset that
I needed to be in for worship. Then the worship band came up and began the service very smooth.
There were a lot of lights directed at the band, and as we began worship it reminded me of what the
beginning of a concert would look like. In class we talked about how we do not worship to be a
show, but an acceptance of the invitation God has given us to worship Him. While worship began,
the thought of this conversation popped in my head as the lights started to flash transitioning into the
next song. As worship progressed, we continued singing more and more upbeat songs that were
mostly about the Spirit, and people started to respond more and more emotionally. I was able to
personally worship as freely as I wanted to, but the lights again started to actually distract me from
truly worshipping. It was very moving though to see people responding to the Holy Spirit by
kneeling, praying, and raising hands. The worship leader was also very expressive of his emotions
during the service. This occurrence also made me think

theological, biblical, and historical facets and ultimately determines that "Worship has never been
practiced in all places by all people in one way (18). In order to discuss the various types of worship
in a congenial way, Basden introduces six authors that are charged with defending and critique each
other's methods.
First, Paul Zahl defines and defends the practice of formal–liturgical worship. For Zahl, formal–

Best acknowledges that often in "worship skirmishes" what divides is not what is important, namely
truth, but instead what is temporal, namely music style. For Best, the most effective way to worship
is to rely upon the historical truth preserved in the hymn book.
In Chapter 3, Joe Horness sets forth an argument for contemporary music–driven worship. This style
of worship has an emphasis on relationship. Horness seeks to set forth the true goal of contemporary
worship. It is not just about the instrumentation; instead it focuses on the communication. Horness
takes the reader personally through his journey from traditional worship to contemporary worship,
including his experience with Willow Creek Church. In his chapter, Horness promotes an emphasis
on connecting: connecting unbelievers with believers and ultimately, connecting all people with
God. He states, "People of this generation are longing to experience the genuine presence of God.
And God is longing to move in and among the hearts of his people. If we will learn to worship from
hearts that are fully engaged, God will be glorified and set free to move in us and among us (104)."
Horness ends his chapter with some brief warnings for those involved in the contemporary worship.
He then encourages all worshipers to seek above all to bring their best to God

Worship Analysis : The Baptist Church

also noticed that they had some Baptist influence in their service. Though they did some things
different, I found throughout the service there were some similarities to the Baptist church I
attended. There were also many things that happened throughout the service that I noticed are things
that we talked about in class that I found they were successful in accomplishing or they failed at.
First off, the evening started off with a dinner and an Easter egg hunt for the kids. While eating
dinner many of the people from the church were very inviting and kind. They introduced themselves
to me and asked me questions about how I was and things like that. There were some of the staff

Analysis Of ' Dante 's ' The ' Of Hell '
The Crucial Role of Symbolism
I think Dante's description of Hell is a wonderful work of literature. Dante uses numerous literary
techniques to describe his vision of Hell to the reader. In my opinion, one of the most affective
techniques used by Dante is symbolism. It would be a very difficult task to compile a brief list of
significant symbols from the Cantos that we read in class. Dante utilized many symbols throughout
each canto. Some of the symbols that Dante used in Inferno are well defined and easy to interpret,
while other symbols are much more difficult to recognize and understand. For this paper, I will be
analyzing multiple symbols from Dante's Inferno. Some of the symbols came from the Canto's that

Many times while traveling through hell, Dante is found hanging back so he can talk to the souls
about their punishments or he remains behind due to his pity and fear for the souls in hell. During
these times Virgil has to repeatedly encourage Dante to stay on the path of the journey that they
were intended to travel on. The fact that Vergil has to lead Dante along is, in a way, motivating
Dante not to stray from the path of righteousness. The numerous stumbling blocks that threatened to
interrupt Dante 's journey were not just physical barriers, "but can be seen as agents of hell that
threaten to keep Dante from a pious life." Dante 's deliberate journey toward heaven can also be
looked at in contrast with the pointless wandering signified by to and fro movement of many
condemned souls that were in hell. Theses souls have completely lost the path of righteousness and
literally have no direction in the afterlife. In contrast, Dante has the ultimate goal of reaching heaven
in front of him and a motivating force in Virgil, which gives a purpose and direction to his
continuing journey.
Another symbol that occurs throughout The Inferno is the idea of light and dark. Hell is obviously
associated with darkness. Dante remarks many times about the darkness of hell and how some areas
of hell are completely

Dante's Work
Dante's work, in all its complexity and its value, was a contemporary landmark even only if we
consider the admiration which Boccaccio sent to him; over the centuries, from Chaucer and
Chateaubriand, to Miguel de Unamuno, all the great minds have turned to the model represented by
Dante. Although Vita Nuova it is widely known as the most noble manifesto of Italian poetry (Hede,
p.34), and the most perfect expression of the sweet new style, a mostly candid and ingénue story of
Dante's love for the Florentine Beatrice Portinari, Dante's name became synonymous with The
Divine Comedy.

How did Dante thought to express this imaginary reality, in such a concrete appearance?
It should be added – before giving an answer to this question – that the main purpose of the author
was not necessarily to create a work of art, which the audience would simply admire. He wanted to
provide first and foremost a teaching tool, to make us – reading his book – to think of ourselves and
maybe to place ourselves exactly where we think we deserve.
Transposing us in those situations, trying to correct our lives, we can avoid the infernal circles.
Dante is not only the writer who thinks that structure, but also the character that passes through Hell
(Raffa, 11). He got there because at one point in his life he got lost.
Sins are punished by equivalent rules (which in Italian were called "the Legge del contrapasso").
Each type of sin is punished in an equivalent manner. For example the lustful, those who cheated in
love, have betrayed their pair, will fly as birds and will be struck by rocks, without any second of
rest. What was their fault in life? They did not stuck with their partners, but have wandered in search
of other love affairs, and they struggled to find new carnal pleasures.
Now they are not allowed any time off and rest; the

The Divine Comedy : Inferno Ira
The Divine Comedy: Inferno IRA by Dante Alighieri
Summary:
(Exposition) Midway through his life, Dante finds himself lost from his true way, wandering
through a dark and savage forest. He finds a mountain, after which a divine light shines upon him,
encouraging him to go up it. But he is stopped by three malicious creatures and is only saved when a
man finds him. The man identifies himself to Dante as Virgil (a great Roman poet), and reveals that
his lost love Beatrice (and two others) has wished for God to grant Dante a journey through heaven
and hell (so that he can be redeemed). Dante eagerly accepts the path he has been given, and heads
out with Virgil (who he greatly admires).
(Rising Action) After crossing paths with the Muses, Dante and Virgil reach the gates of hell, upon
which is an inscription that reads "All hope abandon, ye who enter in!" The two press onward
through the gates, where they reach the Ante–Inferno (Within Hell, but not a true part of it), which is
reserved for the souls that failed to make moral choices in life (but did not sin) and were not truly
good or evil. These souls are condemned to spend eternity chasing after a blank banner, while
maggots bite them, which Dante finds himself to pity their suffering. Further into the realm, the
protagonist and his guide reach the river Acheron, where souls go to cross into hell. They are
transported by an entity known as Charon (clearly the one taken from Greek Mythology), who
serves as a ferry driver into

Skills And Ethics Of Human Services Course
In my CEPD 3200: Skills and Ethics in Human Services course, I had to complete three hours of
service learning in a facility of my choice. For my Service Learning Project, I volunteered at
Southern Hills Christian Church, a local church that my family attends. Southern Hills Christian
Church has a church service for children in Kindergarten–3rd grade called "All Stars", which is
where I completed my service learning hours. I chose to complete my hours at the church in the
children's department because I have an interest in wanting to work with children as a career. Also, I
am an active volunteer at my church, so I did not need to go through any background checks,
paperwork, etc. The following is what I did while completing my service learning hours, what I
learned, and how I can apply this into the real world. The All Stars children service at Southern Hills
Christian Church runs for three different services on Sunday mornings, and one service on
Wednesday nights. I attended two separate Sunday morning services and one Wednesday night
service. The two Sunday morning services that I attended were each on a different Sunday. Before
each service begins, there is a game rom that the children who attend service can play in while they
are waiting for service to commence, as some come early before the service starts. Since I came
early, I used this time to interact with the children, such as asking how their day was going, playing
games with the children, etc. As a counselor,

The Reflection Of Education And Values Of The Modern...
Are humans merely thinking things that interact in this world from a purely intellectual frame work
or is there something more, deeper, richer to the human creature, and how does the way one views
human beings shape the way they view and organize education, especially Christian education?
These are the main questions raised and discussed in Desiring the Kingdom (Cultural Liturgies):
Worship, Worldview, and Cultural Formation by James K. A. Smith.
The main focus of this work is to shift the modern Christian mindset concerning what education is
and how one teaches and learns. The author believes that education should be primarily concerned
with shaping one's view of the "good life" which means a change from a focus upon one's intellect
being bombarded with ideas and doctrines to be learned and believed to a transformation of one's
imagination (Smith, 2009, p. 18). The author seeks to accomplish this task by showing modern
secular examples of what this world values and how it educates and indoctrinates individuals into its
"religion" and then discusses how the church and Christian educational institutions might adopt, or
rediscover, this "liturgical" method of forming individuals and communities.
Within the first few chapters of this book the author introduces his subject matter by stating the main
claim of the book which is that "liturgies– whether 'sacred' or 'secular'– shape and constitute our
identities by forming our most fundamental desires and our most basic attunement

Dante 's Paradise Lost, And Homer 's Iliad
Along with Milton's "Paradise Lost" and Homer's "Iliad" the "Commedia" of Dante Alighieri
represents the very pinnacle of poetic accomplishment. The essay will look at the Vita Nouva as the
praise of the miracle; for such was the marvelously beneficent lady, as long as she lived, as Dante
often affirms. And in this miracle one can recognized a material attestation of Eternal Truths. And
the divine comedy is the glorification of truth itself as revealed to Dante and subsequently to Dante's
readers now days. The Vita Nuova may be called the entrance of that solemn sanctuary, the Divine
Comedy. This essay will look at Beatrice named, the bringer of beatitude, and her smile. Also
Beatrice will be interpreted as the medium of beatitude itself to Dante the poet.
The great poet [Dante] may be held in due honour and that he may be for the pupils the teacher of
Christian doctrine, he whose one purpose in his poem was 'to raise mortals from the state of misery'
that is from the state of sin, 'and lead them to the state of happiness,' that is the divine Grace.
Echoing the words of Pope Benedict XV one can see that the principal aim of the "sacred poem" of
Dante is doubtless to point out to the "people disposed to evil and deceived" the way to salvation,
using as an example that which, under the vail of poetic imagery, that Dante gives one to understand
happened in his own soul. This is the inquiry intended in this analysis of the Vita Nouva where
Dante is the receiver of an epiphany

Dante’s, The Divine Comedy
In Dante's, The Divine Comedy, Virgil leads Dante through the Inferno, where Dante undergoes
changes in his compassion. I am going to argue that Dante expresses less compassion during his
journey when Virgil leads him through the Inferno. This essay will prove how Dante shows more
feelings at the beginning of the Inferno compared to the end of the Inferno. Dante is being a coward
by thinking he is unable to make his journey: I'd be too slow had I obeyed by now. You need no

point, you leave the spacious circle where you burn to go. In this particular part, in Canto two, Dante

Near the end of the Inferno Dante is barely showing any emotions: I woke before the day ahead had
come, and heard my sons (my little ones were there) cry in their sleep and call out for some food.
How hard you are if, thinking what my heart foretold, you do not feel the pain of it. Whatever will
you weep for, if not that? By now they all had woken up. The time was due when, as routine, our
food was brought, Yet each was doubt, thinking of their dream. Listening, I heard the door below
locked shut, then nailed in place against that dreadful tower, I looked in their dear faces, spoke no
word. I did not weep. Inward, I turned to stone. They wept. And then my boy Anselmo spoke: 'What
are you staring at? Father, what's wrong?' And so I held my tears in check and gave no answer all
that day, nor all the night that followed on, until another sun came up. (Dante, Inferno, 33: 37–54)

Mass V. Mary's Catholic Church
The religious institution that I observed is affiliated with Christianity. Catholics worship is called
Mass and that is what I observed and reflected about. As many of my friends are Catholic, I thought
it would be interesting to go and experience a Catholic Mass, and watch what all happens during

family, and experience the Mass first hand.
As I stepped into the church, I already felt a warm, welcoming feeling. A couple of the members of

From listening to the daily readings and reflecting on them with psalms and hymns, I could see a
focused approach to the word. All the readings motivated us to see and face all the challenges that
were in the real world today. The gospel and sermon spoke by the priest were, even more of a
celebration of the word and to proclaim our faith outside the church. Following the time of listening
and reflecting on the readings of the day, I noticed that it was then time to reflect and act upon faith.
Worshippers would bring up offerings and gifts that would be blessed and accepted by Jesus. I think
the public display of communion with all the worshipers was evident when everyone went up to the
altar to receive the bread, which is similar my church. I think that the second part of Mass showed
the actions of faith that were taken after celebrating the word of God. Overall, the service was
pleasing and enjoyable to observe. The visit made me see and understand the Mass and the
symbolism that the church itself has. I enjoyed the first part of listening to the word and having the
priest apply the sermon and readings directly into our lives today and then the second part, seeing
everyone participate in gathering gifts and communion, showing their faith and proclaiming it. I
found the choir to be interesting that they do most of the singing with sometimes everyone singing

Reflection Of Psalm 121
I read this passage to Cindy a few times over the last 2 ½ years. It always seemed to bring her peace
as she processed her next step in this journey. Psalm 121 seems to speak of the tough times in our
lives and how we can still find peace. God does not live in some celestial tower, far away from the
world God created. God cares for all the people and all of creation. God cares for us amidst all the
twists and turns of life's journey. It is that conviction which inspires Psalm 121, a Psalm I read again
to Cindy in the last week of her life. Psalm 121 is sometimes called „the traveler‟s Psalm‟. It was a
psalm sung by pilgrims as they made their annual journey to Jerusalem. It expressed their faith in
God, but also reflected the unease they felt about travel. "I look to the mountains; where will my
help come from?" (v.1). Mountains may be beautiful, but they can also be dangerous. Mountains are
places where people lose their lives. No, the hills are not the place from which our help comes –
rather they are the place where help is needed. Here in this Psalm, the hills or mountains represented
the perils of the journey, for it was in the ravines and gorges of the mountain ranges that wild beasts
and robbers hid. As the pilgrims looked to the mountain ranges they had to cross if they were to
reach Jerusalem, they were filled with foreboding and wondered from where their help would come.
It is in this situation that the Psalmist declares: "My help will come from the Lord, the

I found that one of the major symbols that reoccurred throughout the poem is the idea of a
continuing journey. This was depicted in the very first line of the poem when Dante 's life was
compared to a road or pathway which Dante is halfway through. The specificity of the piece noting
that Dante is "halfway through" further emphasizes the symbolism of continuing a journey by out
rightly stating that he has begun but not yet finished. Therefore, when Dante strays from the
intended path in the beginning of the first Canto he has symbolically "strayed from the right kind of
life". Dante's journey with Virgil through the many layers of hell also

Summary Of The 124th Psalm
Introduction
In the 124th Psalm, voice is given to a beautiful question about the tragic reality that would have
been theirs if their "help" had come from anyone but the LORD. The "what if?" question is worth
asking, and numerous moments recorded in the Hebrew Bible speak of times of strife where, in the
end, "God comes through." Dr. Toni Craven describes the whole of the Psalms as "a self–contained
religious library of prayer in that it incorporates an enormously wide spectrum of issues and reflects
various historical backgrounds.[footnoteRef:0]" The echoes of those moments in the narratives of
the Hebrew Bible are heard behind the words of Psalm 124. Fortunately, the utter destruction the
124th Psalm alludes to doesn't come to fruition. In spite of the power wielded by their enemies,
power that is as consuming as the appetite of a devouring monster and as uncontrollably destructive
as a flash flood raging, and even though the ones who are against the people of God possess a grasp
that is as sure and as strong as a hunter's well–set snare, those mortals cannot overcome the ones the
LORD chooses to defend. Instead, their rescue from that trouble receives the emphasis and is
celebrated as the salvific, liberating work of God. Claus Westermann aptly describes Psalm 124
thusly: "Psalm 124 is able to transport us into the hour in which Israel looked back upon a rescue
from grave trouble and summed up this experience of deliverance in language of relived praise,

Psalm 60 Analysis
Anderson's paper is written to discuss the possible dating of Psalm 60 based on the way one would
read and analyze it. His main point is to warn against trying to date the psalms without adequate
support; many different scholars are used by Anderson to prove his point that dating is hard to do
when you do not have enough information. However, he incorporated the LXX and MT as well as
other psalms to solidify his claim for the date he gave the psalm. Anderson gives the reader a form–
critical analysis, historical–critical analysis of the oracle and the complaint, and gives a text–critical
analysis before trying to date the psalm himself. The article begins with Anderson stating the

Using other scholars and their research added to the argument, however, it would have been even
more convincing if he would have included a more balanced view of scholars who agreed as well as
disagreed with the view that he presented in the text. Overall, however, Anderson presented his view
with enough support to convince me that his dating is the most accurate, simply because it is clear in
his work that he put in the effort and care enough about the topic to search for the most reliable date
based on facts presented. In his work, Anderson stresses that dating a psalm is not an easy task, but
he made an honest and well thought out attempt at dating the psalm. Therefore, I believe that overall
the text is a good example for other scholars to use to try and date other psalms as well as

The Inferno By Dante Alighieri
Dante Alighieri must have been an extremely strict and lecture–loving parent. In the first part of his
collection, The Inferno, Alighieri filled his story with subliminal messages within the text to teach a
greater lesson to the reader. Dante Alighieri purposefully chooses specific moments to express
humankind's weakness and how human reason can positively influence people to react in the correct
manner in the eyes of God. Through the interaction of two of his main characters, Dante, who
represents mortality; and Virgil, who symbolizes sensibility; Alighieri is able to provide insight and
guidance to the character of Dante in the story and more significantly, to the people reading it.
Within this passage, Dante projects a common human quality of wanting to give up in the face of
struggle. As Dante becomes too tired from escaping from his journey into the 7th Bolgia and begs
Virgil to stop and rest for a minute, Virgil strictly chastises Dante that if he ever wants to achieve
fame in his life, he must never give up his goals. In such a simple situation lies a grander message.
Here, Dante represents the limitations of humans in the form of his exhaustion and Virgil's response
of both sternness and compassion reflects the logic and the understanding qualities of human reason.
In The Inferno, Dante Alighieri uses the physical relationship between Dante and Virgil to illustrate
the allegorical connection showing how human reason directly guides the decisions of the flawed

Analysis Of Dante 's ' The Inferno '
Dante Alighieri endured immeasurable adversity throughout his life when he began composing the
Inferno. Affliction arose at a young age when Dante's mother passed. Soon after, Dante met Beatrice
and fell in love, yet a formal marriage contract with Gemma Donati prohibited Dante from pursuing
Beatrice. In his early literary studies Dante met Guido Cavalcanti, his best friend, and Brunetto
Latini, his mentor, and saturated himself with love poems centralizing Beatrice. At the age of
eighteen Dante buried his father, and a few years later fought in the Battle of Campaldino. As a
fervid patriarch of Florence, Dante became active in the life of politics as a White Guelf. While
faithfully serving his city, Dante's long lost love (Beatrice 1290), mentor (Brunetto Latini 1294), and
friend (Guido Cavalcanti 1300) had perished. Subsequently, Pope Boniface VIII and the Black
Guelfs drove the White Guelfs out of Florence in 1302, while Dante too was exiled, his belongings
were confiscated. "His wife did not follow Dante into exile in 1302, probably because her family
ties to Florence were so strong," (Forman 3). Submerged in solitude, it was essential for Dante to
deeply examine his experiences, beliefs, and life. Understandably, as a literary scholar Dante used
poetic documentation to understand, accept, and forgive himself and others. Dante's readers find an
overabundance of personal experiences throughout the Inferno, and just as Dante used Virgil's
Aeneid and the Bible as counsel

Influence Of The Classical World Upon Dante 's The Inferno
The Influence of the Classical World Upon Dante's The Inferno Dante Alighieri, an Italian poet and
writer of the 13th century, creates a fictional account of his visions of his journey through Hell. His
background as a Catholic influences his life and his writings, including The Inferno. He uses the
historical and political events of his lifetime to influence his writings as well. Dante is educated and
very familiar with the history and literature of the classical world. In The Inferno, he expresses his
admiration for Greco–Roman history, literature, mythology, and philosophy, but he also places
limitations on the ability of the classical world to gain salvation as taught and believed in Christian
doctrine.

Dante is saying that Virgil cannot enter heaven because he lived before Christ. Dante admires the
classical Roman world but rejects it as the path of salvation to God. In Canto II, Dante says he is
unworthy to make the journey with Virgil. Dante summarizes what happens in The Aeneid when
Aeneas descends into the underground and sees his father. Later, the descendants of Aeneas establish
Rome. Dante believes God favored Virgil as a Roman because eventually St. Peter would be in
Rome. "In that quest, which your verses celebrate, he learned those mysteries from which arose his
victory and Rome's apostolate" (25–27). Dante names St. Paul as another person who preached
Christianity in Rome, "bearing the confirmation of that Faith which is the one true door to life
eternal" (29–30). Virgil convinces Dante that he has been sent by God to guide Dante through Hell.
In Canto III, Dante and Virgil arrive at the first river of Hell, Acheron, which was part of Greek
mythology. Charon, the ferryman, is also from Greek mythology. In Canto IV, Dante and Virgil
arrive at the first circle, which Dante refers to as Limbo. Limbo holds the souls of the Virtuous
Pagans, people who were born before the time of Christ. Virgil says, "that these were sinless. And
still their merits fail for they lacked Baptism's grace, which is the door of

The Allegorical Messages of The Divine Comedy by Dante...
The beginning lines of The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri indicate a pragmatic journey through
the dark woods. It is soon evident that The Divine Comedy is in terms of an allegory. Midway
through his life, Dante finds himself lost and in darkness. He is confused and unaware of how he has
ended up in these dark woods. Dante soon comes across Italian poet Virgil, who will guide him
through the Nine Circles of Hell. Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy: Inferno portrays Dante's
life and adventure through Hell which allegorically represents a much broader subject: man's
journey through life to salvation.
The Divine Comedy: Inferno begins when Dante is midway through life and he has lost his way. In
the starting lines, Dante claims, "Midway in our life's journey, I went astray From the straight road
and woke To find myself Alone in a dark wood." Dante declares that he has strayed away from the
"straight road." In Dante's allegory, the straight road symbolizes the right and virtuous path that
leads to God. Mankind must be constantly seeking morality, and once man begins to lose sight of
this righteousness, they will begin to abandon God's honest path. In order to remain on the right
path, man must carefully strive for virtue and be aware of their sins.
Not knowing how he wandered away from the "straight road," Dante finds himself in an eerie, dark
wood. In Dante's Inferno, this "dark wood" allegorically resembles the people of mankind who are
not consciously aware of

Dante And The Nature Of Sin
Dante and the Nature of Sin
Often, we cannot see the good until we have experienced the bad. Dante Alighieri, a poet who
makes himself the main character in his Divine Comedy, finds himself lost in a dark wood at the
start of The Inferno. Though he sees a safe path out of the wood towards an alluring light, he is
forced to take an alternate route through an even darker place. As the ending of the pilgrim Dante's
voyage is bright and hopeful, Alighieri the poet aims to encourage even the most sinful Christians to
hope for a successful end. Thus, Dante the pilgrim goes to hell in The Inferno to better understand
the nature of sin and its consequences in order to move closer to salvation; his journey an allegory
representing that of the repenting Christian soul. Before Virgil arrives to guide Dante on his journey,
Dante shares that he doesn't recall how he lost his way. He tells "How I entered [the dark wood] I
cannot truly say, I had become so sleepy at the moment when I first strayed, leaving the path of
truth" (Inferno I.10–12). Because he strayed from the holy path, Dante finds himself lost and trying
to find his way back on the right track. Dante's ultimate goal is to to free himself from the dark
wood of confusion and chaos. Looking up from the wood, Dante sees "the hilltop shawled in
morning rays of light sent from the planet that leads men straight ahead on every road" (Inferno
I.16–18). Dante begins to move towards the light, but is blocked from passing by three

everything together. They bring in the numbers especially on the holidays and create some liveliness
in the church that otherwise wouldn't exist. This group pays little attention to the politics of the
church and couldn't care more about who's on the vestry or not. Children are included into the day

Race, Gender, And Women
During the time I observed Mass there was a dominate race in attendance–mostly Caucasian (around
200) with several Hispanics (around 50) and very few African Americans (only three); however,
there was not a dominate sex or age of the attendees. There seemed to be an equal amount of males
and females, and a vast degree of age–newborns to very elderly among the participants. The clothing
of the participants was very formal and respectful. Most women either wore long dresses or skirt
with leggings or tights underneath, some women wore pants; however, there was only a few women
in pants; all women wore shirts that did not show very much (if any) cleavage–some women (around
ten) wore black, white, gray, or brown veils over their heads–at first I believed that the veils were a
sign that the women wearing them were preparing to become nuns; however, several small children
were wearing the veils over their heads, and according to Lauren, the veils are symbolic–they show
respect to the Saints and God by allowing women to observe submissiveness and obedience. There
seems to be no correlation between the veils color and a symbolic meaning behind the veil color.
Men wore suits or khakis and a button up shirt. Women and men were all aware that they were in a
church and must be modest–not shorts or t–shirts or cocktail dresses were seen of the participants–if

  • 1. The Inferno is a work that Dante used to express the theme... OUTLINE Thesis statement: In Dante's Inferno, the first part of the Divine Comedy, Dante develops many themes throughout the adventures of the travelers. The Inferno is a work that Dante used to express the theme on his ideas of God's divine justice. God's divine justice is demonstrated through the punishments of the sinners the travelers encounter. 1) Introduction A. An overview Dante Alighieri's life, writing style and the Inferno B. Dante Alighieri's life during the torrential times of the Florentine history C. His writing style not only consisted of some literature firsts, but also his ability to make the reader feel present in the story 2) Main Points: Dante's Inferno enables man to understand that the punishment of the soul is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The city–state was divided at the time into Guelphs––the party of the pope––and Ghibellines––the party of the Holy Roman Emperor. The Alighieris belonged to the former party until they were driven out in the late 1200s. The Guelphs assumed power but split themselves up into Whites and Blacks, the Whites taking the antipapal position of the Ghibellines. Dante eventually cast his lot in with the Whites. When the Blacks seized power in Florence in 1302, they condemned him to death, forcing him to leave his wife, Gemma Donati, and their four children in his beloved native city for the rest of his life. Dante spent most of his time in exile writing new pieces of literature (Siegal). It is believed that around 1307 he stops work on Convivio to begin The Comedy (later known as The Divine Comedy). He completed it shortly before he dies in 1321. The Divine Comedy is recognized as his greatest literature accomplishment not only for the multitude of themes and literature firsts, but also for the beauty of his writing style. With his writing style and the implementation of some literature firsts, Dante assured his name in history. • 4. Review Of ' Hairspray ' By John Waters From Grease to Rent, musical comedies have been known to enlighten viewers on specific issues while keeping the context of the musical pleasurable and easy to enjoy. The 2007 musical film Hairspray is a satire of Baltimore in the early 1960's while going through the Civil Rights movement. Through this romantic comedy, the agon of African–American civil rights and other power struggles among race gender, and class are depicted through certain comic techniques to keep the musical lighthearted but meaningful. The 2007 play, Hairspray, is based off of a 2002 Broadway musical which was ultimately based off the 1988 comedy film by John Waters also named Hairspray. It begins in 1962 just before the Civil Rights movements took place. A plump teenager named Tracy Turnblad wants to audition for a local television dancing show, "The Corny Collins Show,"but her mother Edna won't let her follow her dreams of being famous. Edna thinks she will get hurt because she doesn 't look like the perfect girl they typically allow on the show, but rather a plus sized version of them. Regardless of her weight, Tracy 's dance moves get her on the show where she meets her crush, Link. With plump Tracy on the show and new changes in the air, the theme of equality reoccurs as Tracy fights to make the show integrated, causing "Negro Day" on the show to be an everyday occurrence. Along with its camp aesthetic, the comedy is full of slapstick humor and parabasis recurrence to demonstrate the main power ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Inferno Research Paper Inferno Research Paper Anthony K. Cassell stated in his critical essay titled "Farinata" that "the methods of punishment in Dante's Hell are exquisitely diverse." The cantos in Inferno are focused on Circles or subdivisions of Hell that describe specific punishments for the suffering souls based upon the sin they committed. The deeper into Hell, the worse the sins that were committed, therefore the agonies of the punishments are greater. In Inferno, Dante brings the issue of sin into light by giving instances of sins he has taken note of. He places the guilty souls at different levels of Hell, depending on which crimes he believes are the worst to commit, showing "how Dante portrayed his understanding of God's justice" (Cassell). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pope Nicholas says he is guilty of simony, so Dante does not pity him. Dante tells him to "stay stuck there, for you are rightly punished" (XIX.97). This is when Dante first begins to realize that God's justice is present is Hell. He then speaks out against all corrupt churchmen, and claims if he were not restrained, he would use even harsher words. Dante then becomes amazed, if not pleasured, with some of the punishments. In the Circle containing Thieves, Dante watches in amazement as a serpent bites a sinner between the shoulders, causing the soul to instantly catch fire, burn up, and then rise from the ashes to return to the pit of the serpents. In the First Ring of the Ninth Circle of Hell, called Caina, named after Cain who killed his brother Abel in Genesis, those who betrayed their kin are punished. The souls must stand in ice frozen up to their heads. Dante witnesses twins frozen face to face, butting their heads against each other in rage. Dante accidentally kicks Bocca degli Abati in the face, then leans down to apologize. Once he recognizes this soul, he tears out his hair before leaving him in the ice. With the constant rebuking from Virgil, Dante has learned to not pity the damned souls. He learns to reconcile his sympathy for the suffering with the harsh violence of divine justice as he begins to see that the punishments fit the crimes committed. • 8. Elizabeth I, Monarch Of England, And Marie De L '... Elizabeth I, monarch of England, and Marie de l'Incarnation, a French nun, both invoked God and other forms of religious power to stake their claims to authority. Elizabeth's role as a queen came at a time when her country was going through political turmoil. Marie's role as a missionary in New France was to civilize the indigenous people. Although working to better their countries, both of these writers are vastly different due to their social positions. While Elizabeth had the substantial task of ruling over her country, Marie was serving her country as a missionary; however, both writers utilize religion to accomplish their various duties. Marie utilized her understanding of religion and the Native's understanding of religion to build a relationship built on trust. She arrived in modern day Quebec in the late 1630's as a missionary from her country to educate and civilize the Natives there to match European traditions. Marie found similarities with the indigenous people as even though they didn't have a God, they had their own forms of worship. In Letter 65 to her son, she answers his questions regarding the "Savages'" beliefs on divinity. "Certain ones adored the sun and offered its sacrifices. Others had recourse to certain spirits who they said provided over the woods but all obeyed their dreams as a divinity" (Marie, 368). Even though the Natives did not have any exposure to "the True God" before they met the Europeans, they still believed in some sort of higher ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. The Meaning Of Liturgy In Here Be The Dragons By Michael... The meaning of liturgy may not be debatable but how that definition functions becomes contestable as it is performed in different settings. Thus, when interpreting a liturgical theology, it would figure, that the same notion would apply. Joyce Zimmerman writes, "...Who interprets liturgy? Is the realization that the practice of liturgy involves a number of competencies at a number of levels." Liturgy by its nature is not static there by constitutes a multileveled evaluation and approach when interpreting. There are no set parameters or guidelines that designate the functional aspects of the liturgy. Liturgy has the potential to take on any form it desires in order to accomplish the objective of moving people to discourse. Liturgy has this Michael Jackson appeal. It has the ability to conform to certain parameters when needed but always functioning within itself to meet its on transcendent perspective. Like Michael Jackson, liturgy can masks itself in a litany of otherness in order to make itself more appealing to others in order to further the discourse. James Baldwin highlights Michael's chameleon like abilities in Here be the Dragons, The Michael Jackson cacophony is fascinating in that it is not about Jackson at all. I hope he has the good sense to know it and the good fortune to snatch his life out of the jaws of a carnivorous success. • 12. Dante's Beasts The Beasts and Monsters in Dante's Inferno The Inferno is the first section of Dante's three–part poem, The Divine Comedy. Throughout Dante's epic journey into the depths of Inferno he encounters thirty monsters and five hybrid creatures. The most significant of these monsters are of central importance to his journey and to the narrative, as they not only challenge Dante's presence in Inferno, but are custodians of Hell, keeping in order or guarding the "perduta gente". In this essay I am concentrating on these prominent beasts, namely Minos, Cerberus, Plutus and Geryon, establishing why they feature in Dante's eschatological vision and discussing the sources which influenced his inclusion of these particular creatures. These four ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His serpentine torso and writhing tail connect him with the previous monsters that Dante has encountered. The twisting movement of Geryon's tail reminds the reader of the manner with which Minos wraps his tail around the sinners, and the description of Cerberus as "il gran vermo" adds to this snaky imagery associated with these beasts. The power the monsters have in their tails would have been meaningful for Dante's readers as it was commonly noted in medieval times that a beast's tail showed its ferocity and held much of its strength. This is illustrated by Brunetto Latini's descriptions of the dragon and the lion in his Li Livres dou Tresor, as well as in Revelations where the power of the horses lay...in their tails; for their tails were like snakes.(6) This association with serpents is also significant as the serpent was the first deceiver (7), establishing the deception and terror connected with these monsters which adds to the uncertain and disordered atmosphere in Inferno. Dante's readers would have been familiar with the beasts he discusses in Inferno as they are firmly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Analysis Of Hairspray When I saw Hairspray the Musical there were three things that I noticed that were important in making the theatrical performance. Those three things were the acting, production, and how the actors made us, the audience, feel. Each of these things contribute greatly to any performance. I feel that this production of Hairspray hit each of these notes very well. The most important part of a theatrical performance is the actors. Without the actors there wouldn't be a show. In Hairspray there were many actors who were key to this show. Some of the top characters in the musical were Tracy, Edna, Velma, and Amber. The first actor, who played Tracy, was not a bad actor, but I feel that she could have been more full out. I noticed that while dancing and singing, she was not doing it full out. It almost felt as though she and many others were marking the performance throughout the dances and singing part. The next actor, who played Edna, was amazingly funny and full out. He was the highlight of the show. The third actor, who played Velma, made me feel a disliking of her, which is what is meant to be felt because she is a controlling, racist, and body shaming boss, which nobody should like. I feel like the way she presented her character was right, but she could have added more, almost to the point the audience hates her. The last actor, who played Amber, was spot on, her character was meant to be a queen bee and act as though she has power because her parent does. I feel like the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. The Classic Inferno By Dante Alighieri The classic Inferno by Dante Alighieri is beautifully woven to reflect the realities or unrealities of the time. The various circles of hell are used by the writer to tell the tale in a free–flowing manner (Havely, 98). Interesting, however, is the manner in which he describes the characters such that they are seen to be facing tragedies in their life in hell. The writer categorizes the different types of sins that people can commit and subjects the characters to various punishments, each of which is in a separate circle in hell. Lawall opines that the writer uses a style that makes the reader envision themselves in the poem (Lawall, 17). In so doing, the writer subjects the characters to relatively tragic states even though they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The story narrates that Francesca and Paolo are both punished in hell for their adultery and thus the subjection to the circle of lust (Alighieri, 1012). She expounds that she had been married to Paolo's brother Gianciotto. Francesca discloses that she was not shy of expressing her feelings towards Paolo, who she loved even though she was married to his brother. One day, she reveals, her husband caught them together inside her bedroom and was sure that they were lovers. Francesca opened the door and pretended that all was well before her husband. Unknown to Francesca, Paolo had got stuck in a ladder as he attempted to run away. Gianciotto then killed the two of them, although he had not intended to kill his wife. The circumstance that led to her death is an emphasis of the beauty of love. When Gianciotto jumped to slay Paolo with his sword, Francesca rushed in between and faced the death first. The husband was too disappointed and ended up killing Paolo as well. The portrayal of the two characters as lovebirds and the lack of love between Francesca and her husband show the reality that was then (Alighieri, 1013). The writer further says, through Francesca, that Gianciotto was thrown into the circle of Caina for killing his family members. This assertion, in character is a balanced move to portray both parties (Francesca and Gianciotto) as losers in the fight. However, the fact that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. Analysis Of ' Rappaccini 's Daughter ' Lauren Thomas Professor Saunders ENGL 231 October 23rd, 2014 The Theme of Love in "Rappaccini's Daughter" Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story "Rappaccini's Daughter" holds the theme of love at its forefront. The story delineates the struggles, both internal and external, that Giovanni Guasconti faces when courting a young woman named Beatrice Rappaccini. Beatrice's love of a plant and her father's love of science are conflicts that also highlight the theme of love. Along with these conflicts, Hawthorne uses the theme of love to pose the question of whether or not love is worth fighting for as well as critiquing a tragic flaw in romantic relationships. These elements combine together to make a compelling argument that love is simply not worth the struggle it imposes. The first conflict that arises in the short story is the internal conflict of Giovanni. Giovanni moves from his home in order to study at the University of Padua and sees Beatrice Rappaccini underneath the window of his new home. The conflict Giovanni faces stems from his affection and blooming love for Beatrice. Giovanni sees Beatrice's beauty as "brilliant, so vivid in its character, that she glowed amid the sunlight" (pg. 7). However, her beauty is rivaled by her horror. Whenever a creature is near her breath, it dies. Giovanni begins questioning whether or not loving Beatrice is a wise decision. Her horror keeps him at bay while her beauty and her personality draw him in closer. The second conflict that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 20. My Catholic Church Experience Paper On April 11th, 2017, I attended mass in the Blessed Edmund Chapel. Unlike other weekday masses, this one was scheduled at 7 AM because of it being Holy Tuesday. Never having been to a Catholic mass before, all of this was a new experience. Growing up in a non–denominational Christian household, I did not have a clue what to expect. From this experience, I was able to gain insight into the Catholic practices and how they conduct their masses. It also helped to expand on the teachings we discussed in religion class. When you first walked into the Blessed Edmund Rice Chapel, you see chairs lined up in front of the altar and podium. Underneath a majority of the chairs, lay a bible to follow along with the sermon of the mass. In front, in front of the altar, there were two candles that a Brother lit during the mass. Even though the chapel being small might seem like a disadvantage, I thought that this feature offered a more personal and close experience. Up on the altar, in between the candles, there was a wooden figure of Jesus on the cross. It was in a way similar to churches I have attended before, except there was no altar or podium, and was ... I learned how the worship differs from the fellowship church and at a Catholic Mass. This was my first time experiencing music like this and also having a service conducted like this. It took a shorter period of time than I was used to and involved less singing. Attending a Catholic mass definitely helped me to better understand the practices of Catholics. It taught me more about scripture and also provided me with an insight to a different religion's customs. From this experience I will take away a new knowledge of the religion the college I attend represents. It also showed me what a Brother exactly was and what their duties ... • 22. Responsibility to Others versus Individual Selfishness The 20th century philosopher Emanuel Levinas, responding to the horrors of the Holocaust, considers our ethical responsibility to other humans as follows: "The Ego loses its sovereign coincidence with self, its identification where consciousness comes back triumphantly to itself to reside in itself...The challenge to self is precisely reception of the absolutely other...[T]he Other hails me and signifies to me...by its destitution, an order. Its presence is the summons to respond...To be Me/Ego thenceforth signifies being unable to escape from responsibility." ("Signification and Sense" 32–33). What Levinas is trying to explain is an individual is a person, or human, by how others perceive that individual, thus an individual is ethically responsible for others as well as others to the individual or is otherwise a loss. Throughout Dante's The Divine Comedy 1: Hell and Shakespeare's Macbeth, the idea of the responsibility to others versus an individual's selfishness is a constant debate. In both Dante's The Divine Comedy 1: Hell and Shakespeare's Macbeth, the responsibility to others is something that is expected. In Dante's The Divine Comedy 1: Hell, Dante is guided through Hell and learns how various sins are punished, the traitors being near the bottom. In Shakespeare's Macbeth, Macbeth is told his destiny to become king, and then face internal conflicts of the various murders he performed in order to achieve the power of being king. The Easter Vigil: Holy Family Catholic Observation Report #4 The Easter Vigil: Holy Family Catholic Church The Easter Triduum takes place during Holy Week, which commemorates step by step the last events in the life of Jesus. It is a very symbolic ritual because it reenacts His passion, death and resurrection. The Easter Triduum, which lasts three days, includes the Easter Vigil, the most important of all Christian celebrations. The celebration, which takes place on the night of Holy Saturday, commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. I would say that at this point, the catechumens had the most important role in the celebration because they were about to be welcomed into the life of the Church. Another important part of the celebration took place inside the temple, the Exultet or Easter Proclamation was sung by a member of the choir. In the past, a priest or a deacon has sung the Exultet, so this was new to me. The Exultet is a song of hope and triumph, because Christ has overcome death. The Exultet is followed by the Liturgy of the Word, which consisted in readings from the Old Testament, the epistle and the Gospel. The readings summarize the history of Salvation. For example, the reading from Genesis described creation, the reading from the Exodus the liberation of Egypt and the Gospel proclaimed the Resurrection of Christ. After each reading psalms were sung. However, during this celebration there were only 4 readings. During the reading of the Gospel, candles were relit to remind us the resurrection of Christ. When he was young he had envisioned Jesus to have angelic features such as, young, handsome, and a compassionate face. It wasn't until he entered into a Christian college, that he was introduced to the real image of Jesus. I had an immediate connection with Yancey. I too had an image of Christ in my head, which consisted of Hollywood portrayals and those in classical paintings. It wasn't till I engaged myself at a Christian college, that I have now received a new and more accurate picture of Christ. Unfortunately, this fact is so true of our society today, but Yancey goes on to show how Jesus makes an extra effort to reach out to he poor. He gives a list, which he got from another writer, on the advantages of being poor. This list really made an impact on me. It showed me how I need to be more open to what God has to say, and not so involved with the materialistic and secular views of today. I need to focus on what God has planned for me, and not make my focus to be what other people think of me. "Strength, good looks, connections, and the competitive instinct may bring a person success in a society like ours, but those very qualities may block entrance to the kingdom of heaven" (Yancey 114). In Jesus' Resurrection, Yancey gives some personal life experience to connect with the reader, and explain the significance of Easter Sunday. He tells the story of how his cat died on Easter Sunday when he was young. It was on this day that Yancey learned what he called "the ugly world," irreversible. Then later on in his life he ends up loosing three friends in one year. All three died in different situations, but it was a difficult time for Yancey. He uses the deaths of his friends as another event that is irreversible. He compares the loss of his cat and friends to the feeling of loss the disciples had when Jesus died. • 28. Theseus And The Minotaur There are many examples of heroes throughout history and in story books that convey great messages, but what makes your leaders heroes? There are many attributes that make a hero but there are three main areas. To be a hero, one must be willing to make many sacrifices, be humble and not expect anything from the actions, and make positive changes. To be a hero means to sacrifice something for someone else no matter the circumstances or dangers. An example of this is in the myth Theseus and the Minotaur. It gives a great example of sacrifice and heroism. Powerful king Minos of Crete demands Athenian women and men every year to feed to the Minotaur. When Theseus heard about this, he was not happy. He took the place of one of the sacrificed men and went to the labyrinth of the Minotaur to try and kill the beast himself. Theseus then expressed his feelings of frustration by saying saying, "When it is time to send the next tribute, I will go as one of them and I vow that it is the last time the Minotaur will be fed with the flesh of any of our people." Theseus was strong and was willing to put himself in danger for the safety of his people. Not many people have the courage to sacrifice themselves. Parents make sacrifices every day. • 32. The Divine Comedy By Dante Aleghiri Dante Aleghiri 's Divine Comedy is widely taught and written about. In it Dante, the author, details his trip through Hell, Purgatory, and then Paradise. The Divine Comedy was written during Dante 's exile from his beloved city of Florence Italy. The work itself is read at various different levels. One could read it as a theological work, a political work, simply as a poetic work, or even as a philosophical work. In his work, "Dante's Paradiso: No Human Beings Allowed" philosophy professor Bruce Silver argues that, " Dante is not a philosopher," instead he just deals with philosophical issues, "including the relation between reasoning well and happiness." Dr. Jason Aleksander, the philosophy department chair at Saint Xavier 's University, would disagree, stating, "In short, for Dante, wisdom, 'the body of philosophy, ' results from the proper ordering of earthly desires or, in other words, 'from the order among the moral virtues. '" Aleksander sees Dante as a philosopher tackling philosophical issues and because he takes that stance he interprets Dante differently than Silver does. Though both see Dante 's work as philosophical they take differing stances on certain points and actually tackle the work in two different ways. Silver makes concise arguments towards Dante trying to deal with the balance between reason and faith. He specifically talks about, "the relation between reasoning well and happiness." Silver uses several different philosophers to prove his point, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As worship progressed, we continued singing more and more upbeat songs that were mostly about the Spirit, and people started to respond more and more emotionally. This style of worship has an emphasis on relationship. Horness seeks to set forth the true goal of contemporary worship. It is not just about the instrumentation; instead it focuses on the communication. Horness takes the reader personally through his journey from traditional worship to contemporary worship, including his experience with Willow Creek Church. He states, "People of this generation are longing to experience the genuine presence of God. And God is longing to move in and among the hearts of his people. If we will learn to worship from hearts that are fully engaged, God will be glorified and set free to move in us and among us (104)." Dante uses numerous literary techniques to describe his vision of Hell to the reader. In my opinion, one of the most affective techniques used by Dante is symbolism. It would be a very difficult task to compile a brief list of significant symbols from the Cantos that we read in class. Dante utilized many symbols throughout each canto. Many times while traveling through hell, Dante is found hanging back so he can talk to the souls about their punishments or he remains behind due to his pity and fear for the souls in hell. During these times Virgil has to repeatedly encourage Dante to stay on the path of the journey that they were intended to travel on. The fact that Vergil has to lead Dante along is, in a way, motivating Dante not to stray from the path of righteousness. The numerous stumbling blocks that threatened to interrupt Dante 's journey were not just physical barriers, "but can be seen as agents of hell that threaten to keep Dante from a pious life." Dante 's deliberate journey toward heaven can also be looked at in contrast with the pointless wandering signified by to and fro movement of many condemned souls that were in hell. Theses souls have completely lost the path of righteousness and literally have no direction in the afterlife. In contrast, Dante has the ultimate goal of reaching heaven in front of him and a motivating force in Virgil, which gives a purpose and direction to his continuing journey. It should be added – before giving an answer to this question – that the main purpose of the author was not necessarily to create a work of art, which the audience would simply admire. He wanted to provide first and foremost a teaching tool, to make us – reading his book – to think of ourselves and maybe to place ourselves exactly where we think we deserve. Transposing us in those situations, trying to correct our lives, we can avoid the infernal circles. The Divine Comedy : Inferno Ira The Divine Comedy: Inferno IRA by Dante Alighieri Summary: (Exposition) Midway through his life, Dante finds himself lost from his true way, wandering through a dark and savage forest. He finds a mountain, after which a divine light shines upon him, encouraging him to go up it. But he is stopped by three malicious creatures and is only saved when a man finds him. The man identifies himself to Dante as Virgil (a great Roman poet), and reveals that his lost love Beatrice (and two others) has wished for God to grant Dante a journey through heaven and hell (so that he can be redeemed). Dante eagerly accepts the path he has been given, and heads out with Virgil (who he greatly admires). (Rising Action) After crossing paths with the Muses, Dante and Virgil reach the gates of hell, upon which is an inscription that reads "All hope abandon, ye who enter in!" The two press onward through the gates, where they reach the Ante–Inferno (Within Hell, but not a true part of it), which is reserved for the souls that failed to make moral choices in life (but did not sin) and were not truly good or evil. These souls are condemned to spend eternity chasing after a blank banner, while maggots bite them, which Dante finds himself to pity their suffering. Are humans merely thinking things that interact in this world from a purely intellectual frame work or is there something more, deeper, richer to the human creature, and how does the way one views human beings shape the way they view and organize education, especially Christian education? These are the main questions raised and discussed in Desiring the Kingdom (Cultural Liturgies): Worship, Worldview, and Cultural Formation by James K. A. Smith. The main focus of this work is to shift the modern Christian mindset concerning what education is and how one teaches and learns. The author believes that education should be primarily concerned with shaping one's view of the "good life" which means a change from a focus upon one's intellect being bombarded with ideas and doctrines to be learned and believed to a transformation of one's imagination (Smith, 2009, p. 18). The author seeks to accomplish this task by showing modern secular examples of what this world values and how it educates and indoctrinates individuals into its "religion" and then discusses how the church and Christian educational institutions might adopt, or rediscover, this "liturgical" method of forming individuals and communities. Within the first few chapters of this book the author introduces his subject matter by stating the main claim of the book which is that "liturgies– whether 'sacred' or 'secular'– shape and constitute our identities by forming our most fundamental desires and our most basic attunement ... The essay will look at the Vita Nouva as the praise of the miracle; for such was the marvelously beneficent lady, as long as she lived, as Dante often affirms. And in this miracle one can recognized a material attestation of Eternal Truths. And the divine comedy is the glorification of truth itself as revealed to Dante and subsequently to Dante's readers now days. The Vita Nuova may be called the entrance of that solemn sanctuary, the Divine Comedy. This essay will look at Beatrice named, the bringer of beatitude, and her smile. Also Beatrice will be interpreted as the medium of beatitude itself to Dante the poet. The great poet [Dante] may be held in due honour and that he may be for the pupils the teacher of Christian doctrine, he whose one purpose in his poem was 'to raise mortals from the state of misery' that is from the state of sin, 'and lead them to the state of happiness,' that is the divine Grace. Echoing the words of Pope Benedict XV one can see that the principal aim of the "sacred poem" of Dante is doubtless to point out to the "people disposed to evil and deceived" the way to salvation, using as an example that which, under the vail of poetic imagery, that Dante gives one to understand happened in his own soul. • 56. Reflection Of Psalm 121 I read this passage to Cindy a few times over the last 2 ½ years. It always seemed to bring her peace as she processed her next step in this journey. Psalm 121 seems to speak of the tough times in our lives and how we can still find peace. God does not live in some celestial tower, far away from the world God created. God cares for all the people and all of creation. God cares for us amidst all the twists and turns of life's journey. It is that conviction which inspires Psalm 121, a Psalm I read again to Cindy in the last week of her life. Psalm 121 is sometimes called „the traveler‟s Psalm‟. It was a psalm sung by pilgrims as they made their annual journey to Jerusalem. It expressed their faith in God, but also reflected the unease they felt about travel. "I look to the mountains; where will my help come from?" (v.1). Mountains may be beautiful, but they can also be dangerous. Mountains are places where people lose their lives. No, the hills are not the place from which our help comes – rather they are the place where help is needed. Here in this Psalm, the hills or mountains represented the perils of the journey, for it was in the ravines and gorges of the mountain ranges that wild beasts and robbers hid. As the pilgrims looked to the mountain ranges they had to cross if they were to reach Jerusalem, they were filled with foreboding and wondered from where their help would come. It is in this situation that the Psalmist declares: "My help will come from the Lord, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 58. Analysis Of Dante 's ' The ' Of Hell ' Jacob Barnett Essay#2 Reid Title I think Dante's description of Hell is a wonderful work of literature. Dante uses numerous literary techniques to describe his envisionment of Hell to the reader. In my opinion, one of the most affective techniques used by Dante is symbolism. It would be a very difficult task to compile a brief list of significant symbols from the Cantos that we read in class. Dante utilized many symbols throughout each canto. Some of the symbols that Dante used in Inferno are well defined and easy to interpret, while other symbols are much more difficult to recognize and understand. For this paper, I will be analyzing multiple symbols from Dante's Inferno. Some of the symbols came from the Canto's that were included in class readings while others were depicted throughout the Canto's that were not assigned readings. I found that one of the major symbols that reoccurred throughout the poem is the idea of a continuing journey. This was depicted in the very first line of the poem when Dante 's life was compared to a road or pathway which Dante is halfway through. The specificity of the piece noting that Dante is "halfway through" further emphasizes the symbolism of continuing a journey by out rightly stating that he has begun but not yet finished. Therefore, when Dante strays from the intended path in the beginning of the first Canto he has symbolically "strayed from the right kind of life". Dante's journey with Virgil through the many layers of hell also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 60. Summary Of The 124th Psalm Introduction In the 124th Psalm, voice is given to a beautiful question about the tragic reality that would have been theirs if their "help" had come from anyone but the LORD. The "what if?" question is worth asking, and numerous moments recorded in the Hebrew Bible speak of times of strife where, in the end, "God comes through." Dr. Toni Craven describes the whole of the Psalms as "a self–contained religious library of prayer in that it incorporates an enormously wide spectrum of issues and reflects various historical backgrounds.[footnoteRef:0]" The echoes of those moments in the narratives of the Hebrew Bible are heard behind the words of Psalm 124. Fortunately, the utter destruction the 124th Psalm alludes to doesn't come to fruition. In spite of the power wielded by their enemies, power that is as consuming as the appetite of a devouring monster and as uncontrollably destructive as a flash flood raging, and even though the ones who are against the people of God possess a grasp that is as sure and as strong as a hunter's well–set snare, those mortals cannot overcome the ones the LORD chooses to defend. Instead, their rescue from that trouble receives the emphasis and is celebrated as the salvific, liberating work of God. Claus Westermann aptly describes Psalm 124 thusly: "Psalm 124 is able to transport us into the hour in which Israel looked back upon a rescue from grave trouble and summed up this experience of deliverance in language of relived praise, understandable ... • 64. Psalm 60 Analysis Anderson's paper is written to discuss the possible dating of Psalm 60 based on the way one would read and analyze it. His main point is to warn against trying to date the psalms without adequate support; many different scholars are used by Anderson to prove his point that dating is hard to do when you do not have enough information. However, he incorporated the LXX and MT as well as other psalms to solidify his claim for the date he gave the psalm. Anderson gives the reader a form– critical analysis, historical–critical analysis of the oracle and the complaint, and gives a text–critical analysis before trying to date the psalm himself. The article begins with Anderson stating the current, popular view that has been used to date psalm 60, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Using other scholars and their research added to the argument, however, it would have been even more convincing if he would have included a more balanced view of scholars who agreed as well as disagreed with the view that he presented in the text. Overall, however, Anderson presented his view with enough support to convince me that his dating is the most accurate, simply because it is clear in his work that he put in the effort and care enough about the topic to search for the most reliable date based on facts presented. In his work, Anderson stresses that dating a psalm is not an easy task, but he made an honest and well thought out attempt at dating the psalm. Therefore, I believe that overall the text is a good example for other scholars to use to try and date other psalms as well as understand the process of knowing the culture of the Bible even more for a more thorough appreciation for what the text is conveying about God and his ... • 66. The Inferno By Dante Alighieri Dante Alighieri must have been an extremely strict and lecture–loving parent. In the first part of his collection, The Inferno, Alighieri filled his story with subliminal messages within the text to teach a greater lesson to the reader. Dante Alighieri purposefully chooses specific moments to express humankind's weakness and how human reason can positively influence people to react in the correct manner in the eyes of God. Through the interaction of two of his main characters, Dante, who represents mortality; and Virgil, who symbolizes sensibility; Alighieri is able to provide insight and guidance to the character of Dante in the story and more significantly, to the people reading it. Within this passage, Dante projects a common human quality of wanting to give up in the face of struggle. As Dante becomes too tired from escaping from his journey into the 7th Bolgia and begs Virgil to stop and rest for a minute, Virgil strictly chastises Dante that if he ever wants to achieve fame in his life, he must never give up his goals. In such a simple situation lies a grander message. Here, Dante represents the limitations of humans in the form of his exhaustion and Virgil's response of both sternness and compassion reflects the logic and the understanding qualities of human reason. In The Inferno, Dante Alighieri uses the physical relationship between Dante and Virgil to illustrate the allegorical connection showing how human reason directly guides the decisions of the flawed human ... • 68. Analysis Of Dante 's ' The Inferno ' Dante Alighieri endured immeasurable adversity throughout his life when he began composing the Inferno. Affliction arose at a young age when Dante's mother passed. Soon after, Dante met Beatrice and fell in love, yet a formal marriage contract with Gemma Donati prohibited Dante from pursuing Beatrice. In his early literary studies Dante met Guido Cavalcanti, his best friend, and Brunetto Latini, his mentor, and saturated himself with love poems centralizing Beatrice. At the age of eighteen Dante buried his father, and a few years later fought in the Battle of Campaldino. As a fervid patriarch of Florence, Dante became active in the life of politics as a White Guelf. While faithfully serving his city, Dante's long lost love (Beatrice 1290), mentor (Brunetto Latini 1294), and friend (Guido Cavalcanti 1300) had perished. Subsequently, Pope Boniface VIII and the Black Guelfs drove the White Guelfs out of Florence in 1302, while Dante too was exiled, his belongings were confiscated. "His wife did not follow Dante into exile in 1302, probably because her family ties to Florence were so strong," (Forman 3). Submerged in solitude, it was essential for Dante to deeply examine his experiences, beliefs, and life. Understandably, as a literary scholar Dante used poetic documentation to understand, accept, and forgive himself and others. Dante's readers find an overabundance of personal experiences throughout the Inferno, and just as Dante used Virgil's Aeneid and the Bible as counsel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. Influence Of The Classical World Upon Dante 's The Inferno The Influence of the Classical World Upon Dante's The Inferno Dante Alighieri, an Italian poet and writer of the 13th century, creates a fictional account of his visions of his journey through Hell. His background as a Catholic influences his life and his writings, including The Inferno. He uses the historical and political events of his lifetime to influence his writings as well. Dante is educated and very familiar with the history and literature of the classical world. In The Inferno, he expresses his admiration for Greco–Roman history, literature, mythology, and philosophy, but he also places limitations on the ability of the classical world to gain salvation as taught and believed in Christian doctrine. In Canto I, Dante begins his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dante is saying that Virgil cannot enter heaven because he lived before Christ. Dante admires the classical Roman world but rejects it as the path of salvation to God. In Canto II, Dante says he is unworthy to make the journey with Virgil. Dante summarizes what happens in The Aeneid when Aeneas descends into the underground and sees his father. Later, the descendants of Aeneas establish Rome. Dante believes God favored Virgil as a Roman because eventually St. Peter would be in Rome. "In that quest, which your verses celebrate, he learned those mysteries from which arose his victory and Rome's apostolate" (25–27). Dante names St. Paul as another person who preached Christianity in Rome, "bearing the confirmation of that Faith which is the one true door to life eternal" (29–30). Virgil convinces Dante that he has been sent by God to guide Dante through Hell. In Canto III, Dante and Virgil arrive at the first river of Hell, Acheron, which was part of Greek mythology. Charon, the ferryman, is also from Greek mythology. In Canto IV, Dante and Virgil arrive at the first circle, which Dante refers to as Limbo. Limbo holds the souls of the Virtuous Pagans, people who were born before the time of Christ. Virgil says, "that these were sinless. • 72. The Allegorical Messages of The Divine Comedy by Dante... The beginning lines of The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri indicate a pragmatic journey through the dark woods. It is soon evident that The Divine Comedy is in terms of an allegory. Midway through his life, Dante finds himself lost and in darkness. He is confused and unaware of how he has ended up in these dark woods. Dante soon comes across Italian poet Virgil, who will guide him through the Nine Circles of Hell. Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy: Inferno portrays Dante's life and adventure through Hell which allegorically represents a much broader subject: man's journey through life to salvation. The Divine Comedy: Inferno begins when Dante is midway through life and he has lost his way. In the starting lines, Dante claims, "Midway in our life's journey, I went astray From the straight road and woke To find myself Alone in a dark wood." Dante declares that he has strayed away from the "straight road." In Dante's allegory, the straight road symbolizes the right and virtuous path that leads to God. Mankind must be constantly seeking morality, and once man begins to lose sight of this righteousness, they will begin to abandon God's honest path. In order to remain on the right path, man must carefully strive for virtue and be aware of their sins. Not knowing how he wandered away from the "straight road," Dante finds himself in an eerie, dark wood. In Dante's Inferno, this "dark wood" allegorically resembles the people of mankind who are not consciously aware of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. Dante And The Nature Of Sin Dante and the Nature of Sin Often, we cannot see the good until we have experienced the bad. Dante Alighieri, a poet who makes himself the main character in his Divine Comedy, finds himself lost in a dark wood at the start of The Inferno. Though he sees a safe path out of the wood towards an alluring light, he is forced to take an alternate route through an even darker place. As the ending of the pilgrim Dante's voyage is bright and hopeful, Alighieri the poet aims to encourage even the most sinful Christians to hope for a successful end. Thus, Dante the pilgrim goes to hell in The Inferno to better understand the nature of sin and its consequences in order to move closer to salvation; his journey an allegory representing that of the repenting Christian soul. Before Virgil arrives to guide Dante on his journey, Dante shares that he doesn't recall how he lost his way. He tells "How I entered [the dark wood] I cannot truly say, I had become so sleepy at the moment when I first strayed, leaving the path of truth" (Inferno I.10–12). Because he strayed from the holy path, Dante finds himself lost and trying to find his way back on the right track. Dante's ultimate goal is to to free himself from the dark wood of confusion and chaos. Looking up from the wood, Dante sees "the hilltop shawled in morning rays of light sent from the planet that leads men straight ahead on every road" (Inferno I.16–18). Dante begins to move towards the light, but is blocked from passing by three ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 76. Dreamers Of Religion It's a warm Sunday morning coast to coast, as little boys and girls rush to the church that sits patiently waiting for them to arrive. Their parents follow behind, walking just fast enough to keep up, but not so fast that they too look like children. The elderly seem to have already taken their seats, as they like to arrive early in order to obtain their reserved spot only made so according to them. Whether the congregation gathers in a barn or a cathedral, you will always find the same three types of churchgoers: the hypocrite, the seeker, and the day dreamer. Race, Gender, And Women During the time I observed Mass there was a dominate race in attendance–mostly Caucasian (around 200) with several Hispanics (around 50) and very few African Americans (only three); however, there was not a dominate sex or age of the attendees. There seemed to be an equal amount of males and females, and a vast degree of age–newborns to very elderly among the participants. The clothing of the participants was very formal and respectful. Most women either wore long dresses or skirt with leggings or tights underneath, some women wore pants; however, there was only a few women in pants; all women wore shirts that did not show very much (if any) cleavage–some women (around ten) wore black, white, gray, or brown veils over their heads–at first I believed that the veils were a sign that the women wearing them were preparing to become nuns; however, several small children were wearing the veils over their heads, and according to Lauren, the veils are symbolic–they show respect to the Saints and God by allowing women to observe submissiveness and obedience. There seems to be no correlation between the veils color and a symbolic meaning behind the veil color. Men wore suits or khakis and a button up shirt. Women and men were all aware that they were in a church and must be modest–not shorts or t–shirts or cocktail dresses were seen of the participants–if someone was to show up to Mass in this attire it would be deemed inappropriate.
