Sir Walter Raleigh Monologue
I had had an affair with Sir Walter Raleigh in the past. With two wives and a mistress you can
certainly see he was a bit of a player. But as soon as you fell he would be gone. So, he was in
Roanoke which was failing. Me being the good queen I am I felt bad. I called upon him to bring
England more tobacco and potatoes. He not only brought over these goods and the majority of the
people from the failing colony. When he returned I had discovered that Sir Walter Raleigh was not
only a bit of a player but whole lot of a cheater. I was obviously annoyed and furious. Even though
our endeavors were very secretive I was embarrassed. I am a queen and was played by a sea scum.
So, I decided I would lock him up in a tower. Sure it's a bit rash but I was not having it. How foolish
of him. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However because of my so witty revenge. This scandal is causing him to go to court. It wasn't his
fault because I called upon him. After a while the whole tower scheme got boring and so I sent him
back to Roanoke for more goods. Such as tobacco and potatoes. If it wasn't for the need of these
goods I'm pretty sure he would have rotted in the tower forever. Honestly, I guilt myself wondering
if my pride was the killer. How could he get back in time when I had him on the ball and chain. He
can't be charged with a crime he wasn't free to

Roanoke Voyage Research Paper
The Roanoke Voyages were England's first attempt at settling in North America. Sir Walter Raleigh
asked for Queen Elizabeth's permission to begin exploration and she agreed to let him organize the
expedition. However, he was not allowed to be physically involved in the actual voyages because
she believed he was a valuable asset to her and did not want him travelling far away. The first
expedition, in 1584, was an exploratory venture. Sir Walter Raleigh arranged for two ships to begin
the exploration. The two captains of the ships were Arthur Barlowe and Philip Amadas. They
discovered fertile land with plenty of game. The area, near the Pamlico and Currituck, would be a
great place to begin settlement. In addition to their own accounts of the journey, they also brought
back two native Americans, named Manteo and Wanchese, to help the English learn more about the
land they may eventually colonize. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This voyage was more of a military venture. It has since been named the "Lane Settlement", after
the veteran Ralph who helped command the voyage and was later named governor of the settlement.
During his time in the "New World", Lane directed parties to the North and West, to find more
information about potential places for settlement. Natives told tales of potential Gold mines and
calmer waters for better ship harbors. Hostility and violences between Lane's men and their primary
food and supply source, the Secotan tribe, forced the settlers to return to England. Fortunately, they
returned with detailed accounts of their experiences. Two major contributors of this information
were Thomas Harriot and John White. Harriot returned with descriptions of local plants, animals,
and people while White had drawn drawn useful maps along with watercolors of landscapes and
natives he had seen during his time spent at the "Lane

Perfect Companions – "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" by Christopher Marlowe, and "The

also usually written in the same form. Two of the most famous companion poems are "The
Passionate Shepherd to His Love" by Christopher Marlowe, and "The Nymph's Reply to the

"The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" is about a shepherd who promises everything he could to a
woman so that she would love him and live with him. "Come live with me my love, and we will
allthe pleasures prove." The Shepard is lonely and really needs a woman companion and he will
give her anything. He promises that he will make her many things. "And I will make thee beds of
roses," and "A cap of flowers, and akirtle." He really loves this woman ifhe is willing to handcraft
items for her to wear. Some of the things he promises would be very tedious to make andshould be
appreciated greatly. "A beltof straw and ivy–buds with coral clasps and amber studs." After making
all ofthese things for the woman the man is in for a surprise that he wasn't expecting.
In"The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd" the Nymph tells the Shepherd what shethinks about all of
the promises that were made to her. "If all the world were young, and truth inevery shepherd's
tongue, these pretty pleasures might me move to live with theeand be thy love." Proving that there
is"almost" no chance at the entire Shepherd getting with the Nymph. Even though he was going to
construct hervery elaborate gifts she still did not want the man. "The Flowers to fade" "The gowns,
thy shoes, thy bed of rose, thycap, thy kirtle, and thy posies, soon break, soon wither–soon
forgotten, infolly ripe and reason rotten." Foreverything that the man had promised the Nymph had

The Roanoke : The First Attempt For A Permanent English...
The Roanoke was an important part in Virginia history, it was the first attempt for a permanent
English settlement in the new world. It was founded by Sir Walter Raleigh in the 1585 and he
brought 100 colonists with him to Virginia and left them behind. Walter also had brought his
daughter which soon gave birth to the first English child born in America. Her name was Virginia
Dare. He had to go back to England because he had to fight in the Spanish war. He sent a fleet of
ships in between the 3 years he was fighting but they did not make it to the settlement, instead they
landed on a different island and the captain of the ship refused to go any farther than that island.
When Raleigh returned 3 years later the only clues that him and the colonists that came with him
found were the words CROA and CROATON carved into 2 trees. Before Raliegh had left them 3
years earlier he told them if there was was any trouble then to carve a cross in a tree. They searched
all the trees around but did not find any crosses carved. But recently they have done a tree test on
the wood that the word CROATON was carved into and they figured out that when he was gone
there was extreme drought conditions that were going on while Raleigh was gone. Nobody really
knows what happened to the settlement but there has been very educated guesses from historians.
One guess came from a historian studying this subject "That the croaton indian tribe 50 miles away
might have something to do with it." But the

Essay on A Discourse of Remours for the Amorous
The great playwright Christopher Marlowe also wrote one of the most famous lyrical poems in
British literature, "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love." In this pastoral portrait, Marlowe reveals
the shepherd's desire for a certain young lady to be his love. In "The Nymph's Reply to the
Shepherd," Sir Walter Raleigh voices the young lady's answer to this invitation. The two poems
share the identical structures of rhyme scheme and meter. Also, the speakers share a similar desire
for youthful love. However, these similarities are overshadowed by the differences in the author's
backgrounds which, in turn, influence the starkly different characteristics of the speakers of the
poems––their view of reality and their motive for love.

The few similarities in these two poems, however, are far overshadowed by the differences that
exist. When analyzing these differences, it is helpful to first examine the contrasts in the lives of the
authors. Christopher Marlowe was born into a lower–class family, but his education enabled him to
work for a theatre company in London. From there, he became a dramatist, a poet, and a playwright
for the rest of his short life. Marlowe was known for the interesting company that he kept. On the
night of his death, he was with three friends––a moneylender, a con artist, and a spy for the Queen's
secret service. The four of them were eating and got into an argument which ended with Marlowe
being stabbed and killed. Sir Walter Raleigh lived a quite different lifestyle. He was an explorer who
led an exhibition to the fabled City of Gold. He also founded several colonies and named the
territory of Virginia. This was done in honor of the "virgin queen", Elizabeth I. This was no surprise
because Raleigh was a favored suitor of the Queen. She gave Raleigh the honorary title "Sir" and
lavished him with money and land. However, the Queen discovered that Raleigh was, in fact, not
interested in her, but was instead interested in a lady named Bess Thockmorton. Because of this, the
Queen promptly had Raleigh imprisoned in the Tower of London for thirteen years. His great

"The Passionate Shepherd to his Love" by Christopher Marlowe and "The Nymph'sReply" by Sir
Walter Raleigh are two of the most well known of pastoral poems and theirresponses. Marlowe's
poem speaks of beautiful things a shepherd will make for his lady love, while Raleigh's response to
Marlowe's is a tongue–in–cheek poem of a woman who rebukes theshepherd's actions. Of the many
responses to Marlowe's original poem, Raleigh's is the clearwinner. Due to his style, content, and
opinion, Sir Walter Raleigh's "The Nymph's Reply" is thebest reverberation of Marlowe's original

work. Its rhyme scheme and overall structure make Raleigh's reply all the morecutting.

Biography Of Christopher Columbus And The Viking Leif...
The history of America did not begin with the pilgrims landing at Plymouth in 1620, rather centuries
before. In 1000 AD, the Viking Leif Erikson settled land in North America, and in the centuries to
come Europeans dreamed of finding a route that would bring them to the fabled treasures of Asia.
Christopher Columbus, an explorer from Italy, believed he had found such a western sea route to
Asia in 1492, when in reality he had discovered North America. Europeans followed Spain's lead to
settle the New World after hearing of the riches and natural resources that the land brought. In the
late 16th century, Queen Elizabeth I of England hired Sir Humphrey Gilbert and Sir Walter Raleigh
to settle land for England. After several failed attempts, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He picked this area after studying the first–hand accounts of French and Spanish explorers, such as
Juan Pardo who found in the Carolinas fertile land and precious stones and metals. Sir Walter
Raleigh after his research became confident after his research that he would be able to fulfill his
promise to the queen. The two men who Raleigh sent to the New World were Captains Amadas and
Simon Ferdinando. On July 4th of 1584, they reached the southern tip of the Outer Banks, which is
off the coast of what is now North Carolina. The islands, which stretched some 120 miles, were
claimed as England's on the 13th. Amadas and Barlow spent five weeks in exploration and
interaction with the Native Americans. They deemed in their report of findings that island of
Roanoke would be ideal for a settlement because it had plenty of fish, game and vegetation, good
soil, and was a secure location hidden from passing ships. In addition, the local Roanoac were
friendly and established trade with them. The men sailed back to England with their glowing
account, and Raleigh, thoroughly convinced and pleased, decided that he would name the land
Virginia after the Queen. As a result, he was elevated to knighthood, and prepared for the next step
in colonization. Although Amadas and Barlowe reported that the Roanoke "earth bringeth forth all

Science : The Mystery Of The Lost Colony
Science Unravels the Mystery of the Lost Colony What makes history such an interesting subject to
study are the many mysteries intertwined with in it. Over the years many of the mysteries have been
solved. However, one of the most intriguing mysteries still remains unsolved and leaves us with a
question that needs to be answered, what happened to the settlers of the Lost Colony of Roanoke?
Since their disappearance historians have come up with multiple theories about what could have
possibly happened. The most popular and widely accepted theory suggests that a hostile Native
American tribe abducted the colonists and either killed them or made them slaves. An alternative
theory suggests that the Spanish attacked the colony and killed the settlers. Another less credible,
but still popular, theory is about the Dare Stones, a set of rocks that tell stories supposedly by the
colonists which explain what happened to them. While all of these theories have some merit there
are inconstancies within them that make each of them false. A lack of information and technology is
what caused the flaws in these theories and make incorrect. However, thanks to advancement in
technology and new information a recent scientific study can prove what happened to the colonists
of Roanoke. This new theory can be used to explain the disappearance of the hundreds of colonists
and finally shed light on a mystery that is centuries old. Roanoke was the earliest English attempt to

Charter to Sir Walter Raleigh : 1584
Charter to Sir Walter Raleigh : 1584
Everybody remembers Jamestown, Capt. John Smith, Pocahontas and all the rest. But do you
remember Roanoke? In 1585, after a small scouting expedition had returned from North America
with two Native Americans and many astonishing stories, Sir Walter Raleigh tried to establish a
colony called Roanoke in the land which the British named "Virginia", in honor of Elizabeth, the
Virgin Queen. The site was actually an island on North America's eastern seaboard protected by the
outer banks of what is now North Carolina's coast. Sir Richard Grenville led the fleet that brought
them to the New World, the Governor of the colony was Master Ralph Lane and among the
colonists was Walter Raleigh's confidant Thomas ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Capt. John Smith was a soldier and adventurer. He had fought in France and Hungary, been captured
and escaped. Although his personality caused him some initial problems with the other colonists (he
arrived in Jamestown in chains after alienating the leaders of the expedition) he eventually made
contact with the local Native American chieftain Powhatan, who provided the colonists with much
of their food in that first year. Capt. Smith was eventually even appointed leader of the colony.
One of Powhatan's children, a daughter called Pocahontas, visited the colonists in the early years
and even brought food and other provisions to them. Several years later in an attempt to obtain
bargaining advantage over Powhatan the colonists kidnapped Pocahontas and she stayed with them
in Jamestown. A colonist, John Rolfe (who incidentally was the first of the colonists to cultivate
commercial quality tobacco and start the Colony on its way towards profitability) eventually
married her and took her to England. She died as they were preparing to return to Virginia.
In 1619 a group of 20 African slaves arrived in Jamestown on a Dutch ship.
Grouped with the Southern Colonies, Virginia started out as a Corporate colony (granted by Royal
charter to a Company of investors who have governing rights) but in 1624 became a Royal colony
(subject to the governing authority of the granting Royalty).
In 1676 the village of Jamestown was

Compare and Contrast Essay
Compare And Contrast
Compare And Contrast Many differences occur between the poem, "The Passionate Shepherd to His
Love" and "The Nymph to the Shepherd." These differences are mostly with themes, imagery, and
diction. "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" was written by Christopher Marlowe and it was the
first written of the two poems. "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd" was written in response to that
poem, but it was written by Sir Walter Raleigh. The themes to these two poems vary greatly. "The
Passionate Shepherd to His Love" carries the theme that love conquers all. The shepherd is so in
love with this maiden. He begs her to come live with him and allow him to take care of her. He
promises her all the material things ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The nymph recognizes that love is more than an idealistic dream. She realizes that nature changes
and that love changes as well throughout the seasons of life. Thirdly, the difference in these two
poems can be seen in their use of imagery. The first poem uses the material riches that nature has to
offer: "a bed of roses" (9), " a gown of the finest wool" (13), and "a belt of straw and ivy buds" (17).
The nymph then points out that materialistic things and even nature fades: "When rivers rage and
rocks grow cold" (6), and "in folly ripe, in reason rotten" (16). The shepherd's offerings to her do not
reflect her view of reality in love or nature. We have seen that "The Passionate Shepherd to His
Love" and "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd" are similar in writing style but different in many
ways. The differences are celebrated in the themes, the use of diction, and their use of imagery. Both
poems are wonderfully written and great examples of how poems can be so alike and yet so
different.

English Settlement In Roanoke Colonies
The thought of settling the American coastline was put addressed when Queen Elizabeth conceded a
sanction to Sir Walter Raleigh to attempt settlement in Roanoke colony, yet because of poor
relations with natives, wrong timing, and ineffectual associations with homeland from outside wars,
the pioneers of this very first ever attempt for English settlement were destined for disappointment.
Conditions in England during the 16th and 17th century were reflected in both rural and urban areas.
Migrating to new world seem as the only option for many of this people. As it did for English
leaders saw colonises as a way to solve many problems. England started looking at the settlement of

The war delayed White's return trip back three years, making it difficult for the colonist because
they didn't know how to start a colony so they didn't farm nor begin any type settlement. On August
1590, White was finally able to return to Roanoke and those left behind, where he had left before his
family and the rest of the English settlers three years ago. Once he arrived back at Roanoke he found
nothing whatsoever, no trace or indication of whether or not they were alive except a few clues and
a wooden post with the word "Croatoan" carved into it. White thought the writing meant the
colonists had moved to an island nearby, but later search found none of the settlers. It is still
unknown the cause of their disappearance, maybe it could've been the harsh weather conditions or
did the colonists peacefully joined the natives, or even Spanish attacks. This led to White ending the
idea of any form of settlement on any Roanoke island. The fate of the people at Roanoke still
remains a mystery today but this didn't England's desire to claim territory in the new world. This

The Human Condition In Christopher Marlowe's The...
The human condition is described as the characteristics, both negative and positive, events and
situations that compose the aspects of a human being. One of the complexities of being human is
finding true happiness. As people grow older, they begin to understand the real definition of being
happy and contented. On the way to fulfil true happiness, one starts realizing what really matters and
what doesn't. Christopher Marlowe's " The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" shows how the
shepherd is trying to get his love to go with him by offering her tremendous gifts. He promises to
give her gifts that would please her and to prove that he will do anything for her. On the other hand,
Sir Walter Raleigh's " The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd" basically turns down the shepherd's
offer and explains that material gifts just give off temporary happiness. Both Christopher Marlowe
and Sir Walter Raleigh use figurative language to help readers understand the sad reality that all
things in the world are temporary and true happiness does not come from gifts and tangible things
but from our experiences. "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" is one of Christopher Marlowe's
pastoral poem. A pastoral poem deals with the idealistic rather than realistic viewpoint of the life of
the country. In the poem, the speaker is trying to convince his love to come and live with him. The
setting that gets described here sets the mood of the poem. The sincerity and the eagerness of the
speaker can be observed

Exploring The Soul In Sir Walter Raleigh's The Lie
In Sir Walter Raleigh's "The Lie", the speaker tells the soul "to go upon a thankless errand" and go
accuse the world of lying. The speaker states that the soul has the truth as its warrant, which gives
the soul no reason to fear telling authorities or those with power. The second stanza starts with the
speaker telling the soul to accuse the church and the court of their wrongdoings. In the third stanza,
he tells the soul what to say about the potentates, and the speaker says their greedy people only
doing favors for money. The fourth and fifth stanzas describe men of high status as greedy only
interested in advancing their own agenda. The next three stanzas have the speaker telling the soul
about human qualities, such as love, age, beauty, wisdom, and wit, of their wrongdoings. The next
four stanzas are similar, and the speaker tells the soul to accuse charity, law, nature, justice, schools
and more about how they do nothing good for society. Then, after the speaker list all the people and
virtues that need to improve, he tells the soul that it may face opposition but should not worry since
"no stab thy soul can kill" (Raleigh 78). The theme of this poem is that people can and should not be
afraid to change the way the corrupt social norms.
The poem starts with the speaker saying that the errand that the soul is about to embark on will
make people angry but should do his best since the truth will guide him. Almost every stanza
mentions how one institution or human virtue

Classic ideas such as love or the country transcend throughout the tests of time, writing styles, and

time. Some poems that could greatly help support this argument wold be the following : "The
Passionate Shepherd to his Love" by Christopher Marlowe, "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd"
by Sir Walter Raleigh, and "Raleigh Was Right" by William Carlos William. Williams uses Raleigh
and Marlowe's ideas of love lasting, or not lasting and transforms them into a larger idea of life in

He makes a connection with love in his poem while still mentioning the rough situation of the
country. "Love itself a flower / with roots in a parched ground" (17–18) .In here the author means
that love is weak and perishable just like a flower, and to add on to the expression of just how
perished love is the symbolic flower is set in parched ground. The author shows how he very
efficiently bases his whole poem on a classic from the 1600s and gives his own theme of live in the
country to Marlowe and Raleigh argument. The theme of love is raised by Williams into an idea of
the country bringing you peace. "We cannot go to the country for the country will bring us no peace"
(1–3). By this the author means that if life seems complex in the city, the country wont make it
better. If any it will make it worse. Just like love is said to be weak and perishable, life in the
country is. They both can be constantly switched to symbolize each other. Here the author proves
how complex yet simple idea love transcends into a larger and more universal

In 1584, Sir Walter Raleigh sent two explorers – Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to the new
world to find a settlement location for colonist settlement. They arrived in the New World on 4 July
1584 and established a good relationship with the natives. Earning the trust of the native, Amadas
and Barlowe returned back to England in 1585 with two natives – Manteo and Wanchese. Manteo
was the chief of the Croatoan tribe and Wanchese was from Roanoke; both speak Algonquian. The
explorers had good and exciting news to report of the wonders of the New World, specifically
Roanoke Island, and how to it could enrich England more. Sir Raleigh reported the discovery of the
Island and the located was named Virginia, in honor of the Virgin Queen. ... Show more content on

All the colonists wanted a fresh start, they were in search of a better life and wanted a place they
could call their home void of all the restriction imposed on their lives by their current land. The
colonists had lived under so much hardship and inequality and they were hopeful for a new
beginning. Therefore, joining the expedition was a lot easier With the help of Amadas and Barlowe,
the geography of the area was created and Sir Raleigh sent the colonists on the second expedition
full of hope for the venture. The expedition was led by Sir Richard Grenville. Grenville left England
with five ships, but the ships separated during the cause of their travel and reunited in the Outer
Bank of the Island. While at sea, one of the ships hits a shoal and lost most of their food supplies to
water. Also, one of the ship – The Red Lion – dropped off it passengers and left the colonists on the
Outer Bank. The colonists moved to Roanoke Island and began to settle into the area. The got to the
Island after the planting season was over, so they could not plant anything. To make their situation
further complicated, they constantly fought the neighboring natives and this behavior put a strain on
their relationship with the natives and subsequently on their stay on the island. During their initial
exploration of the area, the colonists fought with the native of Aquoscogoc village of over a stolen

Roanoke Research Paper Topics
For my research paper I decided to choose the Roanoke topic, this topic really interested me and as
soon as I learned about it, I was eager to learn more. An explorer named Sir Walter Raleigh and
some settlers in 1585 first founded the Roanoke Colony. The finding was an attempt by Queen
Elizabeth I to find an English settlement in North America. Roanoke Colony was established on
Roanoke Island in the outer banks of North Carolina. While Sir Walter Raleigh was in Roanoke he
was able to find 2 crucial goods, potato and tobacco, which was one of the first examples of
"cultural diffusion". The governor of the Roanoke Colony was John White, he left for a short trip to
England and when he came back he found the settlement deserted. Roanoke mysteriously

The Lie By Sir Walter Raleigh
The poem "The Lie" was written by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1592. Thought out the poem, Sir Walter
Raleigh is expressing his feelings about Parliament and Queen Elisabeth, and how they always lie.
During this time Sir Walter begin to personally believe that the repeated, and distribution of the lie
made the people like a bunch of Pinocchio. However, after many years of Sir Walter Raleigh helping
to spread the lie he no longer wanted any part of it. He instead began to warn the readers using his
poetry about the inner workings of the government through each stanza. In the first stanza, the
speaker uses his soul to express his desire for the reader to know the truth. The next three stanzas are
the speaker showing about what and how Parliament lies. After that, the following eight stanzas are
an exaggeration of the lie explaining that things like love, time, and wisdom are no longer. That
because of the lie, they get turned into things like lust, motion, and Entanglements. In the final
stanza, the speaker appeals to the reader to not commit the lie, and instead let their soul guide them
because the speaker and Parliament did not. This poem's theme is warning about how absolute
power corrupts people, but faith and God cannot be corrupted. Government and corruption are as
old as dust. This poem shows no matter the type of government, whether it is a monarchy,
democracy, or aristocracy, there is always corruption within its system and no matter how much
somebody wants to do

Essay Comparing The Passionate Shepherd To His Love And...
The poems "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love", "The Nymph's Reply to The Shepherd", and
"Raleigh Was Right" by Christopher Marlowe, Sir Walter Raleigh and William Carlos Williams,
respectively, all share and develop a commentary of the ephemeral nature of the world around us,
revealing what they believe serves as impermanent pleasures in an impermanent life. While
Marlowe's poem has a different view than the other two poems, it is here the theme of experiencing
the good parts of life, and more specifically nature, is started, and idealized. The next two poems, by
Raleigh and Williams, respond and expand upon Marlowe's viewpoint on the pleasures and treasures
he mentions.

Just one year later, a poem published had a direct response.
The poem "The Nymph's Reply to The Shepherd", by Sir Walter Raleigh, responds to Marlowe's
poem directly, from the point of view of the "Love" that was being spoken to. The themes
introduced in the first poem have an entirely different take here, and are adapted and developed
quite differently with the views of the speaker from "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love"
essentially disagreed with entirely. The following excerpt captures the rejection of the views of the
first speaker:
If all the world and love were young,
And truth in every Shepherd's tongue,
These pretty pleasures might me move,
To live with thee, and be thy love. (Raleigh 1–4)
With that statement in line two, it is clear the the viewpoint of Raleigh's speaker is that the
optimistic view of the world is false and idealized. The poem further objects to Marlowe's speaker's
views by denying the lasting greatness of all the gifts promised by

The British Renaissance Produced Many Types of Literature and Was Influenced By
Shakespeare, Marlow, and Spenser
The British Renaissance produced many types of literature for the world to see. Shakespeare,
Spenser, and Marlowe all contributed to the shaping of the time period. Christopher Marlowe's
"The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" portrays one of the typical love poems that can
be seen from the Renaissance. A man is in search of the love of another girl, or woman. Sir Walter
Raleigh wrote a poem in response to this passage of Marlowe's entitled "The Nymph's
Reply to the Shepherd." Although the name of the girl is not stated anywhere in the former
poem, Raleigh decided to use a wood nymph as his subject. The ... Show more content on

His age also brings up another very interesting view of Marlowe's. In the poem, Marlowe expresses
the idea that age has no influence upon love and a person's feelings.
The shallow rivers, waterfalls, birds singing, and flowers all personify the
Shepherd's feeling that age has nothing to do with love and his hopes of winning the younger girl's
heart. The scene that is created is highly discernible as
Spring, the time of year associated with love and light–heartedness. The allusions to these things
also demonstrates the Shepherd's hollow sense of hope.
The Shepherd tries to lure the girl by offering her everything in the world.
This materialism clearly shows that Marlowe believes that only fancy trinkets and beautiful
possessions will win the heart of a girl. In virtually every stanza, there is a reference to a nicety that
the Shepherd offers the girl in pursuitof her love.
A belt of straw and ivy buds,
With coral clasps and amber studs;
Christopher Marlowe's Shepherd clearly believes that the only surefire way of attaining love would
be to offer as much as you can and lure your subject into a false sense of being loved by giving her
(or him) the world.
The world means nothing to Sir Walter Raleigh's Nymph, the girl Raleigh presumes to be the object
of the Shepherd's pleas, in his poem entitled "The
Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd" in direct response to Christopher Marlowe. The beautiful
forest creature is young compared to the elderly

Raleigh's marriage to one of her maids of honor, Elizabeth Throgmorton. Queen Elizabeth grew very
angry and jealous causing her to throw Raleigh into the Tower. Upon his release he attempted on an
unsuccessful expedition to El Dorado to the fabled Golden Land in effort to try and get back in
Queen Elizabeth's favor. Sir Walter Raleigh played a very minor role in the defeat of the Spanish
Armada in the year of 1588. He formed the Devon militia and was a member of Elizabeth's War
Council but did not take part in the naval battle. As he returned to court, he made an enemy with
Queen Elizabeth's new favorite, Robert Devereux. Raleigh then left for Ireland, where he there
cultivated his estates and developed the friendship with poet Edmund Spenser, who he later
introduced to Queen Elizabeth in the year of 1590. Raleigh was forbidden access to the court so he
devoted all his time studying and speculating about the universe and nature. He also helped Hakluyt
in getting ready for his voyages, and joined Shakespeare and Ben Jonson at the Mermaid Tavern in
London. By the end of the year 1594 Raleigh had gained enough of the Queens favor back that she

To be specific, the first exploration launched from Plymouth, England April 1584, a long while since
John went on a journey with Martin Frobisher. Thomas Harriot is present during this exploration
(Moran). Thomas Harriot, to sum it up, was, first of all, a lifelong friend of Raleigh 's. He was an
astronomer, mathematician, and a master of navigation. He even founded the school of algebra and
constructed telescopes (States). He and White went together and were in charge with drawing and
mapping the people and land they encountered. They also learned about the Algonquian language
and culture from the wanchese and Manteo. As you may guess, John painted pictures of that. Later,
1585, Raleigh decides to colonize where John white and Thomas Harriot explored earlier in 1584.
Raleigh 's first attempt at colonizing Roanoke was terrible. They had found no quick sources of
wealth and had made enemies of the Indians there. He made another attempt; though, replacing the
sometimes hot–headed military men with craftsmen, laborers, farmers and their families). The
colony decided that they would pay their own way in exchange for the foreign land and they would
work to make the colony self–sustaining. Walter decided that they would colonize near the
Chesapeake Bay where John and Thomas explored in the previous years (1585). They didn 't want to
risk the angered Indians of Roanoke, not to mention the extremely dangerous shallow waters.

Analysis Of The Passionate Shepherd To His Love
"The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" is a kind of peaceful sonnet made by Christopher Marlowe
in the late sixteenth century. This sonnet involves shepherds and nation life. This sonnet was
composed in a shepherd's field or settings. The data given is about the speaker who is a shepherd
and thinks hopefully and impractically. Before Christopher Marlowe could print his work he had
begun accepting different reactions about and towards his work., One such reaction was composed
by Sir Walter Raleigh in his lyric 'The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd' which was an immediate
reaction to 'The Passionate shepherd to His Love' by Christopher Marlowe. Marlowe does not put
much accentuation much on the character or setting yet more on the claim that the shepherd is
endeavoring to make to the young lady. The exceptional topic of this work is of joy and optimistic
love (Raleigh 4). Carpe Diem was an acknowledged topic in sonnets of this period, and this portrays
as a topic. The speaker asserts his adoration to live with him and advantage from the fulfillments of
the day.
Looking carefully on both lyrics, one understands that the game plan of these two sonnets is a
similar where both have six stanzas involving four lines each. In quatrains, both comprise of four
measures for every line with two syllables in each measure as the shepherd urges his adored to
attempt the delights of nature. In his reaction, Sir Walter Raleigh composes utilizing the young lady
as the speaker, offering an

the Carolina 's. It was there that he would met up with the other 4 ships, and together, would all

England for more food and supplies, but he left behind a few people to maintain the village that

with no sign of Grenville, the villagers were ready to leave the New World. It was during this time
that Sir Francis Drake stopped by the village on his return trip from a successful raid in the
Caribbean, he offered to take the villagers back to England with him. All accepted and soon they all
left for England, with tobacco, maize, and potatoes that the villagers brought with them from the
Native Americans that they encountered there. However, Grenville would return, but only to find
that the colony was abandoned. After seeing this, Grenville decided to return to England with most

It was here that his trouble began. The Queen's Maid of Honor, Bessie, and Sir Walter Raleigh fell in
love. In 1572, they were married. The Queen was greatly displeased by this, and threw him in the
Tower of London to be punished. Fortunately, Sir Walter Raleigh also had a great deal of business
sense. In 1575, he was released from the Tower of London because one of his ships captured the
Spanish "Madre de Dios". This ship gained a great deal of treasure for the Queen. In 1584, Sir
Walter Raleigh organized colonizing expeditions to America. These expeditions ended tragically as
"The Lost Colony of Roanoke". Contrary to popular belief, Raleigh was such a favorite of the
Queen that she refused to permit him to go off on expeditions. Thus it was the ships he provided and
the men he instructed who actually went to the New World and brought back a great number of
discoveries. In 1603, Queen Elizabeth died, and so did the success of Sir Walter Raliegh. James I
took the throne. Sir Walter Raliegh and the new king did not get along. Raleigh was framed for a
plot against the throne. James I forced him to life imprisonment. The money hungry king released
him three years later, so that he could organize an expedition against the Spanish. At the end of this
moderately successful expedition, James I had Sir Walter Raleigh rearrested on the previous charges

love is a passion expressed by material substance and his hope that love is long lasted by the support

Nature In Christopher Marlowe, Sir Walter Raleigh, And...
Nature has always had a role in providing for humanity. However, what does it provide for
humanity? The poems that Christopher Marlowe, Sir Walter Raleigh, and William Williams present
touches upon the topic of this. To help support their perspective on how nature provides for
humanity, and what it provides, the three of them use both imagery and structure to go into detail as
to why their perspective is so. Marlowe's perspective on nature is a rather positive one, and with the
use of imagery and structure he explains to the reader why his perspective is so. This can be seen
when Marlowe states "And we will sit upon the rocks, Seeing the shepherds feed their flocks, By
shallow rivers to whose falls Melodious birds sing madrigals." In the stanza that has been presented,
Marlowe uses very delicate examples of nature to persuade the reader that nature can provide for
humanity, as the examples make it seem as so. In addition Marlowe also uses a very calming rhyme
scheme to support his perspective. He uses this to persuade the reader that that is what nature is,
very calm and delicate. The use of rhyme scheme also allows for a very nice flow throughout the
poem, giving the readers a more enjoyable experience when reading. With the use of both imagery
and structure, Marlowe is easily able to support his perspective upon nature. Furthermore, Raleigh
has a negative perspective upon the topic of nature. This can be seen when he states "Thy gowns,
thy shoes, thy bed of roses, Thy

Nature's Response To Nature In Poetry
Three poets have responded to each others poems. Christopher Marlowe, Sir Walter Raleigh, and
William Carlos Williams have said there opinions in nature's role in providing for humanity.
Marlowe had a very gentle approach with nature, while Raleigh and Williams have more of a
negative and abrasive approach toward nature's role in providing. The three poets have came and
showed their opinions through three individual poems.
Marlowe, who wrote "The passionate Shepherd to his Love", has a very positive connection to
nature. In his poem he says "A cap of flowers, and a kirtle embroidered all with leaves of
myrtle."This means how he wants the kirtle embroidered all with the finest leaves of myrtle for his
love. The way that he describes nature shows his great interest at the time with nature. The way he
uses gentle and tranquil words to describe nature shows his soft relationship. All of the gifts that
tries to persuade his love with all have a relation to nature. For example, the gown that he offers will
be made from the finest wool from a pretty lamb. Another example is how Marlowe talks about how
he is going to make her a bed of roses, yet another reference to nature to persuade his love in
coming to be with him. In addition, Marlowe's structure of the poem is also very important to the
meaning of the poem. Marlowe's poem has six stanzas that each contain four lines. The poem meter
is stressed unstressed, and the rhyme scheme of the poem is AABB. In his poem, you will also find
how Marlowe uses alliteration in his poem. The alliteration in the poem helps to describe all of the
wonderful things in nature that he is trying to persuade his love with. An example of this is when he
talks about them sitting upon the rocks and seeing the flocks. The "ock" repetition of consonant
sound helps get the point across that the author has a positive connection with nature and his
persuasion of his love.
Raleigh wrote "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd". His connection toward nature is very negative
in a way. Raleigh's viewpoint on nature is very rough and abrasive toward Marlowe. In his
poem/response his says "When rivers rage and rocks grow cold." The words that he uses also show
how his viewpoint on nature is very

Finding The Lost Colony Of Roanoke Essay
In the late sixteenth, English put forth their effort to establish in America, specifically on Roanoke
island. In 1584, English colonies found east coast of North America but not permanently settled.
Until 1587. Raleigh, John White and a group of 115 English settlers arrived at Roanoke Island.
Although this great achievement had inflated nation 's economy and promote country's prosperity,
its reign didn't last long. John White came back to Roanoke after 3 years of disappearance. After his
arrival, John had no clue where the colonists went and the only remnant left was a single word
"CROATON" carved on a wooden–post. This event has shaken the world with many possible
theories and was considered as one of the most famous unsolved mysteries in American History.
In this presentation, I will talk about the attempts to settle in America by the Englishmen, the
mysterious absence of the colony and discoveries that we have found in the contribution of finding
the lost colony of Roanoke.
As the first voyage started in 1584, two brothers Humphrey Gilbert and Walter Raleigh had
compassions of exploring colonization and exploiting further progress to enhance their nation. In
1578, Queen Elizabeth decided to search the unclaimed parts of North America in order to advance
her naval power. At this point, Queen Elizabeth afraid of having a war with Catholic Spain. Queen

Analysis Of The Lost Colony Of Roanoke
The colony of Roanoke is generally known as England's first attempt to begin a civilized and stable
colony in the unexplored parts of earth known as the New World. Sadly, the plan to colonize
Roanoke Island didn't go exactly as the British planned. The colonists had high hopes to find new
things to take back to England to make profit off of and be the first to obtain life in the New World.
Things started off well for the new colony, but the colonists began to have issues with the new
people they had discovered on the island known as the Croatan and Secotan Indian's. After multiple
attempts of trying to succeed at living a sustainable life in the New World the colony of Roanoke
failed to exist when John White returned to the colony in 1590 and found not a single soul on the
island. No one to this day is quite sure what happened to the remaining colonist's that were last seen
on the island before John White left or any of the two Indian tribe's that had once lived there. The
article I selected, "America's Lost Colony: Can New Dig Solve Mystery?" by Willie Drye from
National Geographic News, discusses the story of the Lost Colony of Roanoke and the recent clues
that have been found that could support several different theories of what happened to the colony.
Drye starts by giving readers a little background information about how England hoped to find new
things to bring back and trade as well as to create a stable colony in the New World back in the
1580s and 90s. Today the

Sir Walter Raleigh Monologue

  • 1. Sir Walter Raleigh Monologue I had had an affair with Sir Walter Raleigh in the past. With two wives and a mistress you can certainly see he was a bit of a player. But as soon as you fell he would be gone. So, he was in Roanoke which was failing. Me being the good queen I am I felt bad. I called upon him to bring England more tobacco and potatoes. He not only brought over these goods and the majority of the people from the failing colony. When he returned I had discovered that Sir Walter Raleigh was not only a bit of a player but whole lot of a cheater. I was obviously annoyed and furious. Even though our endeavors were very secretive I was embarrassed. I am a queen and was played by a sea scum. So, I decided I would lock him up in a tower. Sure it's a bit rash but I was not having it. How foolish of him. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However because of my so witty revenge. This scandal is causing him to go to court. It wasn't his fault because I called upon him. After a while the whole tower scheme got boring and so I sent him back to Roanoke for more goods. Such as tobacco and potatoes. If it wasn't for the need of these goods I'm pretty sure he would have rotted in the tower forever. Honestly, I guilt myself wondering if my pride was the killer. How could he get back in time when I had him on the ball and chain. He can't be charged with a crime he wasn't free to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Roanoke Voyage Research Paper The Roanoke Voyages were England's first attempt at settling in North America. Sir Walter Raleigh asked for Queen Elizabeth's permission to begin exploration and she agreed to let him organize the expedition. However, he was not allowed to be physically involved in the actual voyages because she believed he was a valuable asset to her and did not want him travelling far away. The first expedition, in 1584, was an exploratory venture. Sir Walter Raleigh arranged for two ships to begin the exploration. The two captains of the ships were Arthur Barlowe and Philip Amadas. They discovered fertile land with plenty of game. The area, near the Pamlico and Currituck, would be a great place to begin settlement. In addition to their own accounts of the journey, they also brought back two native Americans, named Manteo and Wanchese, to help the English learn more about the land they may eventually colonize. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This voyage was more of a military venture. It has since been named the "Lane Settlement", after the veteran Ralph who helped command the voyage and was later named governor of the settlement. During his time in the "New World", Lane directed parties to the North and West, to find more information about potential places for settlement. Natives told tales of potential Gold mines and calmer waters for better ship harbors. Hostility and violences between Lane's men and their primary food and supply source, the Secotan tribe, forced the settlers to return to England. Fortunately, they returned with detailed accounts of their experiences. Two major contributors of this information were Thomas Harriot and John White. Harriot returned with descriptions of local plants, animals, and people while White had drawn drawn useful maps along with watercolors of landscapes and natives he had seen during his time spent at the "Lane ... "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" is about a shepherd who promises everything he could to a woman so that she would love him and live with him. "Come live with me my love, and we will allthe pleasures prove." The Shepard is lonely and really needs a woman companion and he will give her anything. He promises that he will make her many things. "And I will make thee beds of roses," and "A cap of flowers, and akirtle." He really loves this woman ifhe is willing to handcraft items for her to wear. Some of the things he promises would be very tedious to make andshould be appreciated greatly. "A beltof straw and ivy–buds with coral clasps and amber studs." After making all ofthese things for the woman the man is in for a surprise that he wasn't expecting. In"The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd" the Nymph tells the Shepherd what shethinks about all of the promises that were made to her. "If all the world were young, and truth inevery shepherd's tongue, these pretty pleasures might me move to live with theeand be thy love." Proving that there is"almost" no chance at the entire Shepherd getting with the Nymph. Even though he was going to construct hervery elaborate gifts she still did not want the man. "The Flowers to fade" "The gowns, thy shoes, thy bed of rose, thycap, thy kirtle, and thy posies, soon break, soon wither–soon forgotten, infolly ripe and reason rotten." • 9. The Roanoke : The First Attempt For A Permanent English... The Roanoke was an important part in Virginia history, it was the first attempt for a permanent English settlement in the new world. It was founded by Sir Walter Raleigh in the 1585 and he brought 100 colonists with him to Virginia and left them behind. Walter also had brought his daughter which soon gave birth to the first English child born in America. Her name was Virginia Dare. He had to go back to England because he had to fight in the Spanish war. He sent a fleet of ships in between the 3 years he was fighting but they did not make it to the settlement, instead they landed on a different island and the captain of the ship refused to go any farther than that island. When Raleigh returned 3 years later the only clues that him and the colonists that came with him found were the words CROA and CROATON carved into 2 trees. Before Raliegh had left them 3 years earlier he told them if there was was any trouble then to carve a cross in a tree. They searched all the trees around but did not find any crosses carved. But recently they have done a tree test on the wood that the word CROATON was carved into and they figured out that when he was gone there was extreme drought conditions that were going on while Raleigh was gone. Nobody really knows what happened to the settlement but there has been very educated guesses from historians. One guess came from a historian studying this subject "That the croaton indian tribe 50 miles away might have something to do with it." But the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Essay on A Discourse of Remours for the Amorous The great playwright Christopher Marlowe also wrote one of the most famous lyrical poems in British literature, "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love." In this pastoral portrait, Marlowe reveals the shepherd's desire for a certain young lady to be his love. In "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd," Sir Walter Raleigh voices the young lady's answer to this invitation. The two poems share the identical structures of rhyme scheme and meter. Also, the speakers share a similar desire for youthful love. However, these similarities are overshadowed by the differences in the author's backgrounds which, in turn, influence the starkly different characteristics of the speakers of the poems––their view of reality and their motive for love. One ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The few similarities in these two poems, however, are far overshadowed by the differences that exist. When analyzing these differences, it is helpful to first examine the contrasts in the lives of the authors. Christopher Marlowe was born into a lower–class family, but his education enabled him to work for a theatre company in London. From there, he became a dramatist, a poet, and a playwright for the rest of his short life. Marlowe was known for the interesting company that he kept. On the night of his death, he was with three friends––a moneylender, a con artist, and a spy for the Queen's secret service. The four of them were eating and got into an argument which ended with Marlowe being stabbed and killed. Sir Walter Raleigh lived a quite different lifestyle. He was an explorer who led an exhibition to the fabled City of Gold. He also founded several colonies and named the territory of Virginia. This was done in honor of the "virgin queen", Elizabeth I. This was no surprise because Raleigh was a favored suitor of the Queen. She gave Raleigh the honorary title "Sir" and lavished him with money and land. However, the Queen discovered that Raleigh was, in fact, not interested in her, but was instead interested in a lady named Bess Thockmorton. Because of this, the Queen promptly had Raleigh imprisoned in the Tower of London for thirteen years. His great ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Comparing The Passionate Shepherd To His Love And Sir... "The Passionate Shepherd to his Love" by Christopher Marlowe and "The Nymph'sReply" by Sir Walter Raleigh are two of the most well known of pastoral poems and theirresponses. Marlowe's poem speaks of beautiful things a shepherd will make for his lady love, while Raleigh's response to Marlowe's is a tongue–in–cheek poem of a woman who rebukes theshepherd's actions. Of the many responses to Marlowe's original poem, Raleigh's is the clearwinner. Due to his style, content, and opinion, Sir Walter Raleigh's "The Nymph's Reply" is thebest reverberation of Marlowe's original poem.Raleigh's stylistic choices for "The Nymph's Reply" make for a perfect response toMarlowe's work. • 15. Biography Of Christopher Columbus And The Viking Leif... The history of America did not begin with the pilgrims landing at Plymouth in 1620, rather centuries before. In 1000 AD, the Viking Leif Erikson settled land in North America, and in the centuries to come Europeans dreamed of finding a route that would bring them to the fabled treasures of Asia. Christopher Columbus, an explorer from Italy, believed he had found such a western sea route to Asia in 1492, when in reality he had discovered North America. Europeans followed Spain's lead to settle the New World after hearing of the riches and natural resources that the land brought. In the late 16th century, Queen Elizabeth I of England hired Sir Humphrey Gilbert and Sir Walter Raleigh to settle land for England. After several failed attempts, ... He picked this area after studying the first–hand accounts of French and Spanish explorers, such as Juan Pardo who found in the Carolinas fertile land and precious stones and metals. Sir Walter Raleigh after his research became confident after his research that he would be able to fulfill his promise to the queen. The two men who Raleigh sent to the New World were Captains Amadas and Simon Ferdinando. On July 4th of 1584, they reached the southern tip of the Outer Banks, which is off the coast of what is now North Carolina. The islands, which stretched some 120 miles, were claimed as England's on the 13th. Amadas and Barlow spent five weeks in exploration and interaction with the Native Americans. They deemed in their report of findings that island of Roanoke would be ideal for a settlement because it had plenty of fish, game and vegetation, good soil, and was a secure location hidden from passing ships. In addition, the local Roanoac were friendly and established trade with them. The men sailed back to England with their glowing account, and Raleigh, thoroughly convinced and pleased, decided that he would name the land Virginia after the Queen. As a result, he was elevated to knighthood, and prepared for the next step in colonization. • 17. Science : The Mystery Of The Lost Colony Science Unravels the Mystery of the Lost Colony What makes history such an interesting subject to study are the many mysteries intertwined with in it. Over the years many of the mysteries have been solved. However, one of the most intriguing mysteries still remains unsolved and leaves us with a question that needs to be answered, what happened to the settlers of the Lost Colony of Roanoke? Since their disappearance historians have come up with multiple theories about what could have possibly happened. The most popular and widely accepted theory suggests that a hostile Native American tribe abducted the colonists and either killed them or made them slaves. An alternative theory suggests that the Spanish attacked the colony and killed the settlers. Another less credible, but still popular, theory is about the Dare Stones, a set of rocks that tell stories supposedly by the colonists which explain what happened to them. While all of these theories have some merit there are inconstancies within them that make each of them false. A lack of information and technology is what caused the flaws in these theories and make incorrect. However, thanks to advancement in technology and new information a recent scientific study can prove what happened to the colonists of Roanoke. This new theory can be used to explain the disappearance of the hundreds of colonists and finally shed light on a mystery that is centuries old. • 19. Charter to Sir Walter Raleigh : 1584 Charter to Sir Walter Raleigh : 1584 Everybody remembers Jamestown, Capt. John Smith, Pocahontas and all the rest. But do you remember Roanoke? In 1585, after a small scouting expedition had returned from North America with two Native Americans and many astonishing stories, Sir Walter Raleigh tried to establish a colony called Roanoke in the land which the British named "Virginia", in honor of Elizabeth, the Virgin Queen. The site was actually an island on North America's eastern seaboard protected by the outer banks of what is now North Carolina's coast. Sir Richard Grenville led the fleet that brought them to the New World, the Governor of the colony was Master Ralph Lane and among the colonists was Walter Raleigh's confidant Thomas ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Capt. John Smith was a soldier and adventurer. He had fought in France and Hungary, been captured and escaped. Although his personality caused him some initial problems with the other colonists (he arrived in Jamestown in chains after alienating the leaders of the expedition) he eventually made contact with the local Native American chieftain Powhatan, who provided the colonists with much of their food in that first year. Capt. Smith was eventually even appointed leader of the colony. One of Powhatan's children, a daughter called Pocahontas, visited the colonists in the early years and even brought food and other provisions to them. Several years later in an attempt to obtain bargaining advantage over Powhatan the colonists kidnapped Pocahontas and she stayed with them in Jamestown. A colonist, John Rolfe (who incidentally was the first of the colonists to cultivate commercial quality tobacco and start the Colony on its way towards profitability) eventually married her and took her to England. She died as they were preparing to return to Virginia. In 1619 a group of 20 African slaves arrived in Jamestown on a Dutch ship. Grouped with the Southern Colonies, Virginia started out as a Corporate colony (granted by Royal charter to a Company of investors who have governing rights) but in 1624 became a Royal colony (subject to the governing authority of the granting Royalty). • 25. Compare and Contrast Essay Compare And Contrast Compare And Contrast Many differences occur between the poem, "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" and "The Nymph to the Shepherd." These differences are mostly with themes, imagery, and diction. "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" was written by Christopher Marlowe and it was the first written of the two poems. "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd" was written in response to that poem, but it was written by Sir Walter Raleigh. The themes to these two poems vary greatly. "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" carries the theme that love conquers all. The shepherd is so in love with this maiden. He begs her to come live with him and allow him to take care of her. He promises her all the material things ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The nymph recognizes that love is more than an idealistic dream. She realizes that nature changes and that love changes as well throughout the seasons of life. Thirdly, the difference in these two poems can be seen in their use of imagery. The first poem uses the material riches that nature has to offer: "a bed of roses" (9), " a gown of the finest wool" (13), and "a belt of straw and ivy buds" (17). The nymph then points out that materialistic things and even nature fades: "When rivers rage and rocks grow cold" (6), and "in folly ripe, in reason rotten" (16). The shepherd's offerings to her do not reflect her view of reality in love or nature. We have seen that "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" and "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd" are similar in writing style but different in many ways. The differences are celebrated in the themes, the use of diction, and their use of imagery. Both poems are wonderfully written and great examples of how poems can be so alike and yet so different. English Settlement In Roanoke Colonies The thought of settling the American coastline was put addressed when Queen Elizabeth conceded a sanction to Sir Walter Raleigh to attempt settlement in Roanoke colony, yet because of poor relations with natives, wrong timing, and ineffectual associations with homeland from outside wars, the pioneers of this very first ever attempt for English settlement were destined for disappointment. Conditions in England during the 16th and 17th century were reflected in both rural and urban areas. Migrating to new world seem as the only option for many of this people. Once he arrived back at Roanoke he found nothing whatsoever, no trace or indication of whether or not they were alive except a few clues and a wooden post with the word "Croatoan" carved into it. White thought the writing meant the colonists had moved to an island nearby, but later search found none of the settlers. It is still unknown the cause of their disappearance, maybe it could've been the harsh weather conditions or did the colonists peacefully joined the natives, or even Spanish attacks. • 29. The Human Condition In Christopher Marlowe's The... The human condition is described as the characteristics, both negative and positive, events and situations that compose the aspects of a human being. One of the complexities of being human is finding true happiness. As people grow older, they begin to understand the real definition of being happy and contented. On the way to fulfil true happiness, one starts realizing what really matters and what doesn't. Christopher Marlowe's " The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" shows how the shepherd is trying to get his love to go with him by offering her tremendous gifts. He promises to give her gifts that would please her and to prove that he will do anything for her. On the other hand, Sir Walter Raleigh's " The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd" basically turns down the shepherd's offer and explains that material gifts just give off temporary happiness. Both Christopher Marlowe and Sir Walter Raleigh use figurative language to help readers understand the sad reality that all things in the world are temporary and true happiness does not come from gifts and tangible things but from our experiences. "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" is one of Christopher Marlowe's pastoral poem. A pastoral poem deals with the idealistic rather than realistic viewpoint of the life of the country. • 31. Exploring The Soul In Sir Walter Raleigh's The Lie In Sir Walter Raleigh's "The Lie", the speaker tells the soul "to go upon a thankless errand" and go accuse the world of lying. The speaker states that the soul has the truth as its warrant, which gives the soul no reason to fear telling authorities or those with power. The second stanza starts with the speaker telling the soul to accuse the church and the court of their wrongdoings. In the third stanza, he tells the soul what to say about the potentates, and the speaker says their greedy people only doing favors for money. The fourth and fifth stanzas describe men of high status as greedy only interested in advancing their own agenda. The next three stanzas have the speaker telling the soul about human qualities, such as love, age, beauty, wisdom, and wit, of their wrongdoings. The next four stanzas are similar, and the speaker tells the soul to accuse charity, law, nature, justice, schools and more about how they do nothing good for society. Then, after the speaker list all the people and virtues that need to improve, he tells the soul that it may face opposition but should not worry since "no stab thy soul can kill" (Raleigh 78). • 33. Marowe And Christopher Marlowe's The Passionate Shepherd... Classic ideas such as love or the country transcend throughout the tests of time, writing styles, and different cultures. Some poems that could greatly help support this argument wold be the following : "The Passionate Shepherd to his Love" by Christopher Marlowe, "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd" by Sir Walter Raleigh, and "Raleigh Was Right" by William Carlos William. Williams uses Raleigh and Marlowe's ideas of love lasting, or not lasting and transforms them into a larger idea of life in the country giving you peace, or in Williams' case not giving you peace. During this time Sir Walter begin to personally believe that the repeated, and distribution of the lie made the people like a bunch of Pinocchio. However, after many years of Sir Walter Raleigh helping to spread the lie he no longer wanted any part of it. He instead began to warn the readers using his poetry about the inner workings of the government through each stanza. In the first stanza, the speaker uses his soul to express his desire for the reader to know the truth. The next three stanzas are the speaker showing about what and how Parliament lies. After that, the following eight stanzas are an exaggeration of the lie explaining that things like love, time, and wisdom are no longer. That because of the lie, they get turned into things like lust, motion, and Entanglements. In the final stanza, the speaker appeals to the reader to not commit the lie, and instead let their soul guide them because the speaker and Parliament did not. The poems "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love", "The Nymph's Reply to The Shepherd", and "Raleigh Was Right" by Christopher Marlowe, Sir Walter Raleigh and William Carlos Williams, respectively, all share and develop a commentary of the ephemeral nature of the world around us, revealing what they believe serves as impermanent pleasures in an impermanent life. While Marlowe's poem has a different view than the other two poems, it is here the theme of experiencing the good parts of life, and more specifically nature, is started, and idealized. His age also brings up another very interesting view of Marlowe's. In the poem, Marlowe expresses the idea that age has no influence upon love and a person's feelings. The shallow rivers, waterfalls, birds singing, and flowers all personify the Shepherd's feeling that age has nothing to do with love and his hopes of winning the younger girl's heart. The scene that is created is highly discernible as Spring, the time of year associated with love and light–heartedness. The allusions to these things also demonstrates the Shepherd's hollow sense of hope. The Shepherd tries to lure the girl by offering her everything in the world. This materialism clearly shows that Marlowe believes that only fancy trinkets and beautiful possessions will win the heart of a girl. In virtually every stanza, there is a reference to a nicety that the Shepherd offers the girl in pursuitof her love. A belt of straw and ivy buds, With coral clasps and amber studs; Christopher Marlowe's Shepherd clearly believes that the only surefire way of attaining love would be to offer as much as you can and lure your subject into a false sense of being loved by giving her (or him) the world. • 59. Analysis Of The Passionate Shepherd To His Love "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" is a kind of peaceful sonnet made by Christopher Marlowe in the late sixteenth century. This sonnet involves shepherds and nation life. This sonnet was composed in a shepherd's field or settings. The data given is about the speaker who is a shepherd and thinks hopefully and impractically. Before Christopher Marlowe could print his work he had begun accepting different reactions about and towards his work., One such reaction was composed by Sir Walter Raleigh in his lyric 'The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd' which was an immediate reaction to 'The Passionate shepherd to His Love' by Christopher Marlowe. The speaker asserts his adoration to live with him and advantage from the fulfillments of the day. • 69. Nature In Christopher Marlowe, Sir Walter Raleigh, And... Nature has always had a role in providing for humanity. However, what does it provide for humanity? The poems that Christopher Marlowe, Sir Walter Raleigh, and William Williams present touches upon the topic of this. To help support their perspective on how nature provides for humanity, and what it provides, the three of them use both imagery and structure to go into detail as to why their perspective is so. Marlowe's perspective on nature is a rather positive one, and with the use of imagery and structure he explains to the reader why his perspective is so. This can be seen when Marlowe states "And we will sit upon the rocks, Seeing the shepherds feed their flocks, By shallow rivers to whose falls Melodious birds sing madrigals." In the stanza that has been presented, Marlowe uses very delicate examples of nature to persuade the reader that nature can provide for humanity, as the examples make it seem as so. In addition Marlowe also uses a very calming rhyme scheme to support his perspective. He uses this to persuade the reader that that is what nature is, very calm and delicate. The use of rhyme scheme also allows for a very nice flow throughout the poem, giving the readers a more enjoyable experience when reading. With the use of both imagery and structure, Marlowe is easily able to support his perspective upon nature. Furthermore, Raleigh has a negative perspective upon the topic of nature. This can be seen when he states "Thy gowns, thy shoes, thy bed of roses, Thy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Nature's Response To Nature In Poetry Three poets have responded to each others poems. Christopher Marlowe, Sir Walter Raleigh, and William Carlos Williams have said there opinions in nature's role in providing for humanity. Marlowe had a very gentle approach with nature, while Raleigh and Williams have more of a negative and abrasive approach toward nature's role in providing. The three poets have came and showed their opinions through three individual poems. Marlowe, who wrote "The passionate Shepherd to his Love", has a very positive connection to nature. In his poem he says "A cap of flowers, and a kirtle embroidered all with leaves of myrtle."This means how he wants the kirtle embroidered all with the finest leaves of myrtle for his love. The way that he describes nature shows his great interest at the time with nature. The way he uses gentle and tranquil words to describe nature shows his soft relationship. All of the gifts that tries to persuade his love with all have a relation to nature. For example, the gown that he offers will be made from the finest wool from a pretty lamb. Another example is how Marlowe talks about how he is going to make her a bed of roses, yet another reference to nature to persuade his love in coming to be with him. In addition, Marlowe's structure of the poem is also very important to the meaning of the poem. Marlowe's poem has six stanzas that each contain four lines. The poem meter is stressed unstressed, and the rhyme scheme of the poem is AABB. In his poem, you will also find how Marlowe uses alliteration in his poem. The alliteration in the poem helps to describe all of the wonderful things in nature that he is trying to persuade his love with. An example of this is when he talks about them sitting upon the rocks and seeing the flocks. The "ock" repetition of consonant sound helps get the point across that the author has a positive connection with nature and his persuasion of his love. Raleigh wrote "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd". His connection toward nature is very negative in a way. Raleigh's viewpoint on nature is very rough and abrasive toward Marlowe. In his poem/response his says "When rivers rage and rocks grow cold." The words that he uses also show how his viewpoint on nature is very ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Analysis Of The Lost Colony Of Roanoke The colony of Roanoke is generally known as England's first attempt to begin a civilized and stable colony in the unexplored parts of earth known as the New World. Sadly, the plan to colonize Roanoke Island didn't go exactly as the British planned. The colonists had high hopes to find new things to take back to England to make profit off of and be the first to obtain life in the New World. Things started off well for the new colony, but the colonists began to have issues with the new people they had discovered on the island known as the Croatan and Secotan Indian's. After multiple attempts of trying to succeed at living a sustainable life in the New World the colony of Roanoke failed to exist when John White returned to the colony in 1590 and found not a single soul on the island. No one to this day is quite sure what happened to the remaining colonist's that were last seen on the island before John White left or any of the two Indian tribe's that had once lived there. The article I selected, "America's Lost Colony: Can New Dig Solve Mystery?" by Willie Drye from National Geographic News, discusses the story of the Lost Colony of Roanoke and the recent clues that have been found that could support several different theories of what happened to the colony. Drye starts by giving readers a little background information about how England hoped to find new things to bring back and trade as well as to create a stable colony in the New World back in the 1580s and 90s.
