Film Techniques
The Effectiveness of the Techniques Used in Film Trailers in Persuading Their Target Audiences
Media is communication. The main purposes of media are to entertain and to inform. Television,
newspapers/magazines, adverts and the internet are the most well known forms of media. Trailers
are designed to advertise the film, giving a good impression in a small amount of time so that people
will either go to see the film, or buy the film, hence making money for the people involved. The
trailers chosen were 'Charlie's Angles – Full Throttle' and 'Terminator 3 – Rise of the Machines'.
They were chosen because they had a large appeal and both used a wide range of presentation
techniques. The genres of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The majority of the audience is the same as the genre of the film – science fiction. I know this
because it shows elements usually found in science fiction films such as robots. The fans of Arnold
Schwarzenegger would be interested by the trailer because it shows him in a lot of the shots, has his
name written boldly across one of the stills, and he is famous for his rolls as the terminator. It shows
many exciting parts of the film, showing many explosions, lots of gunfire and a great deal of
fighting. This would appeal to the action loving audience. Also, there is a shot of an attractive naked
woman walking across the road, which would attract a male audience.
The trailers both use different aspects of the film to advertise it. The 'Charlie's Angels' trailer plays
more on humour and sex appeal, for example the 'sorry I broke your stick' scene, whereas
'Terminator 3' uses the plot and the action to attract people. I think the audience for 'Charlie's
Angels' is mainly female or young boys, whereas with 'Terminator 3' I think the trailer would appeal
to an older audience, possibly more male than female. Both trailers have a certain sex appeal. This
shows that a sexual element in films attracts a lot of people.
The purpose of all trailers is to advertise the film and attract

Essay on Analysis of Halloween Film Trailer
Analysis of Halloween Film Trailer
I have decided to look at a trailer that was filmed in 1978 called Halloween directed by John
Carpenter. The purpose of the trailer is to tease the audience into wanting to see the film but also to
identify genre through conventions and create opinions in the audiences mind. The genre of my
trailer is cross generic horror; appealing to a wide target audience. The horror genre is represented
through the scenes involving blood and violence.
Conventions of the trailer include the length, use of settings, characters, music, sound effects, and
colours. The settings of an isolated house, in the dark on Halloween night are conventional of the
horror genre as they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The trailer is introduced by zooming in on a house; this creates tension and shows the significance
of the house. Furthermore the white coloured house is a representation of innocence, the black
background behind it, draws attention to the house and reiterates its significance, the narrator
quotes, "He's come home", also representing its significance.
Later on in the trailer we are seeing what's happening through the eyes of the villain, this is a very
long, in time, shot of the same view through a mask, which is not typical of a horror trailer but
works, as it is consistently scary.
The straight cut to a doctor talking is to represent a professional opinion, adding to character
development as a stereotypical doctor represents a trustworthy character for the audience. The
character introduced as the main victim is a young, attractive girl, who is a babysitter this is a
representation of innocence also following the conventional "children in jeopardy" scenario creating
tension and fear for the audience.
The trailer shows realism through the settings, characters and music. The settings is in a
stereotypically little, small–populated village. The sound effects of screaming represent realism as
they show real fear and emotion.
Iconography is use throughout the trailer to identify certain things. The use of the pumpkin seen
next to the title represents

Manliness Through Camera Angle And Zoom Analysis
The Change in Manliness Through Camera Angle and Zoom By April of 1945, the second World
War was drawing to a close. Nazi Germany was unraveling as the allies were closing in on Berlin.
However, the battle for the Pacific was still raging. The movie Hacksaw Ridge by Mel Gibson
encapsulates the vicious fighting between the Americans and Japanese during the battle of Okinawa.
The movie depicts the struggle Private Desmond Doss (played by Andrew Garfield) during boot
camp, and battle, faced from his fellow soldiers because of his extreme religious practices. In the
middle of the film, during boot camp, we can see that the platoon bully Doss in the barracks,
especially Private Smitty. In this scene, through camera angle and camera zoom, Mel Gibson
encapsulates the discrimination and group mentality of the platoon against Doss. After the initial
assault however, and after Doss single handedly saves seventy or more soldiers, the platoon waits
for Doss to finish his prayer before assaulting Hacksaw Ridge the second time. By showing this
scene, Mel Gibson destroys the connotation that a man is only judged by his physicality and
toughness. By showing that Desmond is the most courageous man in the platoon without being
violent, it shows that religion and self–belief is what a man is truly judged on. The first shot of the
barracks invites the audience to see the harassment through Desmond's eyes as he is sitting on his
bed reading his bible. Smitty is hanging in the background,

Film Techniques In Blade Runner
In the movie "Blade runner", Ridley Scott the director, incorporates the filming techniques lighting,
sounds, setting and camera angles. The ways Scott draws the audience into the film and what the
purpose of the film as whole is very interesting.
Throughout the movie, Scott uses lighting as a technique to enhance the emotional effects of his
audience. One scene in which lighting can be interpreted is below. When we are shown Deckard's
apartment in other scenes, the details of the space are barely distinguishable. The apartment is
incredibly dark and void of visible details. This is a parallel to the character of Deckard himself.
Deckard comes across as keeping all emotion within and not being very expressive. This is in the
nature of his profession and he is therefore sometimes seen as cold or emotionless. This character
attribute changes when it comes to his relationship with Rachael. In the scene below the apartment
is lit far more than normal. The viewer is now able to see details about the space. It is later in this
scene that the true feelings of Deckard are seen when Rachael tries to leave the apartment and
Deckard proceeds to block the door, throw Rachael against a window, and kiss her. Deckard opens
up and shows true emotion, just as the space of his apartment opens and we are shown more detail
than ever before.
Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1984) takes place in a future Los Angeles in the 21st century– some
time after the colonisation of the solar system by

Truth In Ron Howard's Film A Beautiful Mind
Ron Howard manipulates responders views of verisimilitude to illustrate that each individual's
understanding of truth may be unique. Through careful analysis of filmic devices we as a responder
are able to see that in Ron Howard's film A Beautiful Mind that truth can be subjective and also that
an external perspective is required to reveal and confirm truth. Howard's film A Beautiful Mind
clearly shows that truth can be subjective, this is seen in many instances throughout the whole film.

Christopher Nol An Auteur And Postmodern Filmmaker
Christopher Nolan is an auteur and postmodern filmmaker. He started off making low budget 'indie'
films, his first being Doodlebug. He has now risen to being one of the biggest names in Hollywood
and creating blockbusters that not only are visual masterpieces but thought provoking journeys. He
respects film as an art form, thus allowing him to create some of the top ranked films this century
and The Dark Night and Momento are even classed among the greatest films of all time. He has 122
major wins and 163 nominations, most notably three Oscars, three golden globes and three
BAFTAS. His films have grossed a total of US$4.2 billion making him, not only one of the most
visionary, but one of the most successful directors of all time. Many say "what he's trying to be is
some kind of modern Kubrick. I think he'd be better off being a modern Hitchcock " I believe he is a
mix of the two, both pleasing the general audience and those that are there for intellectual
stimulation. After Doodlebug gained him critical attention he then moved on to a bigger project,

trademark of non–linear storytelling, grand–camera angles and powerful diegetic and non–diegetic

cuts. The plotline is truly non–linear (non–chronological). In this film Nolan masterfully weaves

Commercial Photography Analysis
1. I would say that the photograph below can be considered art. Based on my perspective, even
without the use of models in the commercial photography, the beauty of the landscape in the
background is enough to satisfy the requirement of art in my standards. In my perspective, the
purpose of art is to express and share the vision of the photographer. With the plentiful trees in the
background, the small circle in the foreground, and the river in between, the natural landmarks are
enough for me to consider it to be art. Now, when considering the significance of the people in the
photograph, with the added significance of the landscape in the background, is another matter.
Photography, like any other art, is a mode for expression. Sometimes it is the expression of what the
photographer considers important, and at other times it is an expression of the client's interests
matched with the photographer's skill. In this case, as it was pointed out, the bride is clearly in the
center of the photograph, with both the young man, perhaps the groom, and another man beside her.
With the placement of these elements, she does appear to be the focus of the photograph. The groom
appears to be quite close to her, looking ahead, and they both appear smiling, so they are posing to
capture a moment in time, one that is quite important for them that they wish to express and
remember. Yet, is it enough to be considered art in the area of commercial photography? Since the
objective of the photograph is an expression of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Hunger Games Mise En Scene
While it is perceived that The Hunger Games is about action and romance, there is a deeper
meaning behind this well–known movie. The movie is essentially about a nation, Panem, that has
been divided between rich and poor. The rich lived in the Capitol and the poor lived in the twelve
districts. In the beginning of the movie, the upper class is shown to be dominant and superior.
However, as the movie goes on, the lower classes begin to rebel in order to make their voices heard
and to not be looked down upon any longer. To some, living in the Capitol would seem like the ideal
situation; this is because the poor had fewer opportunities and privileges. The wealthy lived fair
lives and had no worry about being selected to participate in The Hunger ... Show more content on

By doing so, the audience can feel sympathy, drama, and suspense throughout the film. A good
example of a low angle shot is when District Ten is listening to the organizer of the games. When he
is picking tribunes, the angle of the camera is down which displays that the tribunes are inferior to
the organizer. The different types of shots also bring attention to something the director wants the
audience to focus on. Along with informing the viewers of something from the character's view
point. A majority of the film is shot in subjective view, giving the audience an extension of Katniss
and seeing what she is seeing. Although this is the case, there are objective shots to show the
viewers the computer generated special effects in the film. It is also noticeable that the editing used
helped capture the concept of social class in this film. The Hunger Games is shot in chronological
order, with little flashbacks. The flashbacks that are used in this film are to understand the
relationship between characters, but this is a very brief part of the

Carolyn Burnham in American Beauty Essay
Carolyn Burnham in American Beauty
Directed by Sam Mendes in 1999, 'American Beauty' is set in a seemingly typical suburban
neighbourhood that gives an in depth look beneath the surface. An ordinary, financially well–to–do
family is followed through the point of view of the father (Kevin Spacey). He narrates his life and
lets the audience in on all of his quirks, flaws and limitations, as well as those of his wife Carolyn
(Annette Bening) and his daughter (Thora Birch). The film exemplifies the idea of achieving the
'American Dream' – not necessarily to reach your ultimate goal in life but to portray the image of
reaching that goal. In addition, the film won 5 Oscars, including best picture and ... Show more

The use of language informs the audience about Carolyn's character, and her reactions towards
others ( In this particular scene, her clients). When speaking to her clients, she is upbeat, determined
and positive ' This kitchen is a dream for any cook, can't you just feel the positive energy in the
room?" However, the clients disapprove and question her selling techniques 'the ad says the pool is
lagoon–like, there is nothing lagoon like about it. This is cement hole'. In this particular shot she
begins to become sarcastic and desperate. Her tone of voice immediately changes when the clients
show they're not impressed with the property. In shot 25, her body language changes from being
open and relaxed to desperate and sarcastic, 'What do you call this, is THIS not a plant!' Here she is
shown to be desperate, with a nervous smile fixed on her face, which reveals that her character does
not like failure. By the use of language we learn that Carolyn Is frightened of failure, hates to loose
and becomes desperate and needy when plans don't go in her favour.
The camera shots and angles play a vital part to learning about Carolyn's role. Mendes uses a range
of angles such as low–angle shots, mid–angle shots and most importantly close–ups. This is used
where Carolyn breaks down at the end of the

Romeo And Juliet Techniques
Fate, the unpredictable and inescapable rope, which controls every aspect of our lives, has plagued
mankind. The power of fate has broached out through a story called Romeo and Juliet. This story is
originally written by William Shakespeare, who was a renowned playwright during 16th century. It
is a story of two star–crossed lovers from two rival families in the city of Verona who seek their
love. This story has been made into several movies and the first modern Shakespearean movie
which is directed by Luhrmann was born during 20th century. He uses film techniques to help make
Shakespearian language understandable to a modern audience such as camera works to convey the
idea of an unchangeable destiny for Romeo and Juliet.
When Romeo and Juliet first meet each other, they are separated by a large blue fish tank. The soft
music with the sound of piano playing at the back presents its calmness and peacefulness of the
mood. The deep blue water, soft pastel colours of pink and blue all give the effect of romance. Both
Romeo and Juliet's faces are zoomed into in order to help the audience acquire an understanding of
the deep love both characters have fallen into. Long shot is used to show their emotions and certain
relationships. When the party is over, Juliet is with her mother, Lady Capulet, on the ... Show more

Luhrmann was able to clearly convey the message of the story and made his film approachable and
understood by modern audiences. His ability to blend incorporated past time elements and combined
them with modern features was very incredible since it is difficult to combine two completely
different colors of the era into one. He used a vast amount of cinematic techniques at points where
the meaning of character dialogue was crucial to be understandable by his viewers. These long
shots, close ups, pan shots, the selection of angle shots, and props is used to to emphasize the
importance of an object or a

The Dark Mood Of Citizen Kane
Personally, I did sense a change in the overall "mood" of the film, (through the progression of
scenes and such). I thought that it became lighter but also (mainly) darker throughout the whole
movie. For one, the director Orson Welles, opened the entire movie with a very caliginous,
horrendous and intimidating scene–that follows the death of the main character or "hero" of the
film. So, right off the bat a very daunt thing occurred. As the movie progresses, I felt the dark mood
begin to (in a very minuscule way) deplete a little, and grow almost lighter. As the movie continued,
it seemed like it was reversing in Kane's life, showing his affair, his first wife's relationship, his
campaign for becoming the governor etc. It continues like this throughout the entire story. But, as it
lightens it also grows darker as well, hitting on the points of Kane's life that were unforgivable
(leaving his family, forcing his new wife to sing, etc). In these moments the mood grew darker.
Since the movie was based off of Citizen Kane (and basically his rude behavior) the mood did grow
darker in more aspects but, it had light hearted moments, especially in the end when the researchers
and other people were going through Kane's house and personal items, they seemed to joke and state
Kane's life in a blunt way–it was almost as if the somewhat apologetic manner for Kane's death was
simply a social need. Whenever someone commits one's last breath, it is polite and socially correct

The Crop Duster Sequence Of North By Northwest
In This essay I will discuss the use of camera movements, framing and the editing devices in the
crop–duster sequence of North by Northwest (Alfred Hitchcock, USA, 1959) By focusing on these
three techniques I hope to establish what effect they have on us and how that effect is achieved? I
will look closely and analyse certain shots in this sequence, which I feel are significant in creating
suspense. By dissecting the layers of each shot, I hope to reveal the technique and intentions behind
them.
The first significant shot I will discuss is just after Eva Marie Saint's face dissolves. This extreme
aerial shot established the vast area in which Cary Grant faces. The camera stays in its fixed high
angle as a bus approaches with Grant. The bus drives off and the camera angle and frame do not
change. This establishes the setting for the viewers. "Such extreme high angle shots make characters
into pawns" (E. Roger, 2008, 4). In other words it evokes the insignificance of a single human being
in such a vast and secluded area.
With nothing around the slow pacing in the beginning of this sequence can be seen as a tantalising
build up of suspense, not knowing what to expect. It cuts to a long shot and low angle as Grant waits
by the side of the road. This emphasises the space he is in and "establishes the characters level of
power and control" (Class notes, Introduction to Cinema)

The Opening of Baz Lurhmann's Film Adaptation of Romeo and Juliet In 1997, Baz Lurhmann

unforgettable. Throughout this essay I will analyse the different techniques Baz Lurhman has used
to make this film adaptation effective. Set in Los Angeles, there are two rivals, the Montague's and

The director has used this shot to create suspense and tension. By focussing on the sign it gives
emphasis and meaning. This immediately gets the audience thinking and creates deep effect because
the audience is getting into the film and makes them think and feel tension. In contrast Lurhmann
uses a low angle shot to great effect. He is focussing on the helicopter in the air, the effect this has
shows the audience that the prince; someone important is arriving therefore its as if we look up to
him, however this can make the audience feel small and vulnerable. The next technique I will be
focussing on is editing and shot transitions. In the first scene we see the introduction on ' Romeo and
Juliet' with voices talking and background music. Then a wipe out edit is used to introduce the
Montague boys who are in their car. The effect this has is that it reduces tension; because during the
introduction it was building up by continuous flicking shots, which created a sense of tension, then
it all stops and focuses on the Capulate boys which then reduces the tension. As a result it also
introduces comedy and creates a slightly more calm effect. Another type of edit Lurhmann uses is a
freeze frame. This is used on several occasions, one of them being as the camera focuses on
Capulates heel and slowly moves up the body, where the freeze frame is focussed on Capulates face.

Mise En Scene In Psycho
From the quote, we are able to see that all , if not most , of Hitchcock's films seek to play with the
viewer's emotions, often by leaving crumbs of suspense before the action, making the viewers go
through a myriad of emotions. Hence, for Psycho, I will be discussing three scenes where Hitchcock
has deliberately and precisely controlled via the film medium, to engage us. Argobhast and
Norman's conversation scene. In this scene, we see Argobhast's journey towards finding out the true
reason of Marion's disappearance and hence, Hitchcock plays us via Norman and Argobhast's first
interaction. Initially, the scene opens up on a light note, with Norman seen reading and eating candy
and as the non diegetic ominous sound slowly disappearing, ... Show more content on

Upon entering the parlor, Hitchcock has set the stage for the viewer to use Marion as a vehicle to
determine how Norman is like. The POV shot of Marion studying the room first brings out attention
to a stuffed Owl and a stuffed crow, the first indicator to the viewer that something is not right,
making us feel suspicious already. Marion then takes the seat closer to the tiffany lamp while
Norman takes the seat at the opposite side of the room which is noticeably darker. Mise en scence in
this scene does the most to capture the true personalities of the characters. For Marion, Hitchcock
has deliberately surrounded her with objects such as the lamp which is actually the only source of
light for the whole room, a pitcher of milk and several other scenic objects. Furthermore, the milk
may perhaps symbolize innocence that despite the crime committed, there is a redeeming quality
within Marion that will save her. As Marion sits closest to the lamp, her face remains brightly lit up
and similarly casting the same effect towards the objects around her. The viewer upon seeing
Marion, unconsciously feels at ease within her presence, perhaps even forgetting that Marion is no

Welles was a pioneer when it came to filmmaking, Especially in Citizen Kane where he developed
new skills of narrative structure, sound, set design and even the screenplay. The aesthetic of this film
gave all the different techniques a new and fresh taste. The Deep Focus shots show the foreground
middle ground and background in a shot making the picture clear. The way that he worked and used
the camera manipulated the viewer's experience, as opposed to the camera style of the "Old
Hollywood" era of filmmaking. The film focuses on scenes shooting into the light and dark to create
a new and fresh filming technique, the cinematic realism was something extremely new to the
filming industry at the time. The realism can be noticed through the Deep–Focus cinematography
done in this film. These techniques allowed for the different scenes to flow together ad make the
audience unaware of the changing of scenes. The importance of Deep–Focus cinematography
affects the way the audience can further understand the film to their own working of their own
minds. Deep– Focus cinematography gives the idea that what you are looking at is really there.
Another important technique in Citizen Kane was the use of Low–angle shots, a low angle shot is a
camera technique in which the camera shots the subject of a scene from the bottom looking up, this
can give the sense of being "Larger than life."

Citizen Kane Is A Quarry For Filmmakers
As esteemed film director William Friedkin once said; "Citizen Kane is a quarry for filmmakers". It
is undeniable that Citizen Kane is the epitome of the great American film. It was initially released in
1941 and was met with great criticism . However, since its release many years ago it is evident that
the film made advancements in cinema techniques which were well ahead of its time . The foremost
reason Citizen Kane is considered one of the great American films ever created is due to the
innovative film techniques that director Orson Welles brought to life .These techniques include new
methods for cinematography, lighting, and sound . The cinematography in Citizen Kane is one of
the primary reasons it is viewed as one of the most celebrated works in cinema. The initiation of
new approaches to cinematography is greatly credited to cinematographer Greg Toland. Toland who
was known for his work as director of photography for such films as Dead End (1937), Wuthering
Heights (1939) which he won an academy award for, The Grapes of Wrath (1940), and many more.
The collaboration between Welles and Toland broke the traditions of atypical 1940 's film.
Essentially, this meant that there should not be great attention to participation of the camera.
However, Welles and Toland attempted to attract as much attention to the camera as possible, by
using dramatic angles and unusual shots. As Martin Scorsese said; "Welles was not afraid to be self–
conscious with the camera". To

Theme Of Flashback In Citizen Kane
This essay aims to examine narrative and stylistic elements in Leland's flashback in Citizen Kane to
show how they work to keep the audience focused on the story that Leland tells. Bordwell and
Thompson shared that the manipulation of story order, time and frequency in the plot illustrate how
the audience actively participate in making sense of a narrative film (81). Bordwell and Thompson
mentioned that typically, in fictional biographies, life stories are presented chronologically and let
their plot present incidents in story order (80). In Citizen Kane, however, Kane's life is traced
through flashbacks by people who knew him, resulting in the creation of an unusual relation of the
plot to the story. Furthermore, Citizen Kane presents an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

movies.
In the film high key lighting represents regular humans. The lighting in town such as in Kim's room
has vibrant colors and uses high key lighting. The color is used to show the contrast of humanity
and normality of the town, even though true emotion is faked by some. It is also used to convey
closeness between Edward and Kim.
The scenes I chose are mainly filmed using low key lighting and they were those of Edward and his
inventor. In the castle, where Edward lived, it was always

Low Angle Shot Essay
This movie poster uses two different shot types: low angle shot and canted angle. Low angle shot
makes the characters seem powerful and influential, while making themselves feel small and weak.
Suggesting that the world is shaking and falling apart, the camera angle is slightly tilted.
There are lots of signifiers and signified in the poster. Flames are often associated with fight, war,
and destruction. There is a colour scheme of yellow, red, and black; red symbolises aggressiveness,
anger, and fight, while black symbolises power, strength, rebellion, and authority. In addition to that,
the guns being held by the two characters are often signified with war, fight, or broken peace. From
the signifiers and signified, it is suggested that the movie is mostly about a war or a rebellion
between the two characters and someone else. Usually, women are characterised as being weak,
dependent, and feminine by wearing pink clothes or dress. However, it is interesting how the
woman is characterised as a strong, powerful, and masculine being. She ... Show more content on

Though when both characters walk backwards and sit down while having their conversation, the
power is equal between because of their body posture is at an equal level. The lighting on Widow's
face is shadowed while talking about her past, whereas Loki's face and body is high lit. This shows
that he still may have the upper hand. When he speaks the camera is on him and it is also a long shot
which emphasises the prison he is kept in. Compared to the prison, Loki seems very small and lost
whilst in it. This puts forward that he is actually not as powerful as he makes out to be, it shows that
he is the one really exposed and the lighting all around and on him suggests that all his true colours
are being revealed. Through out this section of the scene, their tones of voice are calm and
equivalent, so it's still uncertain who has the power. When Loki questions "What are you now?"
Widow stands up and folds her arms, so her posture is now closed which then directly suggests she
now has the power, and is not willing to reveal anymore about herself. Medium close up shot is used
on Loki when he reveals something he knows about her. Then it switches to Widow on a close up
shot on her face to emphasise her worried and shocked eye contact whilst Loki is speaking about her
secrets. The more he reveals the wider her eyes become to create an impact of fear. Loki then stands

Camera Angles In The Truman Show
Throughout the film The Truman Show, the director, Peter Weir, develops and communicates a
strong message that it's natural for viewers to be persuaded into believing things in media are
realistic, however viewers should more often critically analyze the world around them to preserve
accuracy of knowledge and content. This is due to the fact that the overarching power of media tries
to manipulate peoples' opinions and emotions. First off, Camera angles are an extremely significant
part of how a character or scene is perceived. Media has the power to use camera angles to decide
how we view conflict in the movie. In the last few minutes of the film when Kristoff is trying to
stop Truman at sea, the true power of the media is shown as they use camera angles to show the
authority in the situation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Okay he's making a left turn onto Lancaster square. Oh my Gosh something is wrong! Uh change

they sheltered everything from his life and his life may be fake. He starts to become more aware of
the media's powerful control over him and capability to hide aspects of his life. Not just in The
Truman Show, but in reality, although we may think something is real it is good to question and
rethink judgements. For Truman, after getting the jest of his situation he seemed to be more content
with his life and realizes his true capability while seeing through the hoax of the media. This part of
the movie is a true turning point as it shows that media can be very persuasive over Truman, but it is
his critical judgement of situations involving media that can lead to the betterment of his life. Not
only is this theme and the power of media relevant in the film, but it can be taken into our lives by
questioning the world around us. It is always important when having a conflict with media to ask
yourself: is this real, and what is the media truly trying to accomplish

Analysis Of Wes Anderson 's ' The Grand Budapest Hotel '
English 3.9
Texas–born director, Wes Anderson began his career in 1996, producing films with a distinctive
style and techniques that are eccentric and attentive to detail. Anderson generally directs fast–
paced, adventurous comedies, which involve serious elements or key ideas such as grief, 'children
are more adult than adults', broken relationships and family issues. Geometric concepts and framing,
colour schemes, quirky characters, and specific camera movements accompany and help to develop
themes that are developed throughout both films. Within three years, Anderson produced films
'Moonrise Kingdom' (2012) and Oscar winning 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' (2014). Moonrise
kingdom tells the story of two youthful kids and their growing love story. Much like these
characters in Moonrise Kingdom, the idea of change and development in character(s) is seen in The
Grand Budapest Hotel where Zero begins at the hotel as a lobby boy, befriending hotel concierge,
Gustave. Anderson said, "Usually when I'm making a movie, what I have in mind first, for the
visuals, is how we can stage the scenes to bring them more to life in the most interesting way, and
then how we can make a world for the story that the audience hasn't quite seen before". Aspects and
techniques help to create his films and portray his specific style and key ideas.

Essay on Comparing Opening Sequences of Romeo and Juliet
Comparing Opening Sequences of Romeo and Juliet
In my essay I am going to compare the opening scenes the two versions of Romeo & Juliet. One is
by Franco Zeffirelli, which was made in the late 1970's. The other one is by Baz Luhrmann and was
made in 1996. The Zeffirelli version stars Leonardo Whiting as Romeo and Olivia Hussey as Juliet.
This version was more authentic and traditional. It was filmed more in a way Shakespeare would
have illusory it. It was set in Italy in fair Verona and was aimed at the older generation.
The complete contrast of this is the Luhrmann's version. It is a modern day film set in Los Angeles.
This film starred Leonardo Di Caprio as Romeo and Clare Danes as ... Show more content on

Whilst the fight is going, it gets very hard for the audience to recognise as to who is a Montague or a
Capulet. Zeffirelli has not shown the fight as dangerous and serious as it should be. It gives humour
to the audience when people are throwing cabbages at each other during the fight.
The other side of the coin is the Luhrmann's version. It also begins with a prologue, but only this
time, it is broadcast in the news. The news broadcast makes the audience very passionate about the
film right in the beginning, which will keep them at the edge of their seats. Luhrmann shows the
Montague boys stop at a gas station where they come face to face with the Capulets. One of the
Capulet Abra shouts, "Boo" which scares a Montague boy. As revenge, a Montague boy bites his
thumb at them. This makes the Capulet very angry and both of them start shooting at each other.
Benvolio and Tybalt join in as well. At the end, Tybalt drops his cigar on the ground where petrol
was spilled accidentally. This leads up to a huge fire. Soon the police chief arrives in a helicopter
and stops the fight when Benvolio and Tybalt have their guns pointed at each other's head.
Luhrmann's version is much realistic in a modern day world. Unlike Zeffirelli, Luhrmann introduces
the main characters to the audience. Luhrmann shows how the

film is set in 1944, which is about five years after the Spanish civil war. The story of this film is
about a little girl called Ofelia about the age of 10 who is fond of fairy tales. She is moving in to her
step–dad's house, a ruthless and cruel captain in the Spanish army who dislikes Ofelia. Ofelia
doesn't seem to fit in her new world and she meets a fairy who takes her to a Faun who makes her

the story and characters. It shows that Ofelia goes there in search hope but its destroyed by the cruel
reality. The pale man symbolizes captain Vidal for Ofelia. In the scene when the Pale man bites off
the fairies and eats them. This symbolizes how her childhood is getting destructed and innocence.
The faun also warns Ofelia not to eat anything but she still does and ends up getting caught in the
chase with the Pale man. This shows she is rebellious. The pale man is ugly, tall and skinny. Ofelia
is a little pretty girl. This shows binary opposition between the characters. Good vs Evil. Mise en
Scene – In the opening scene there is a close up shot of a painting which shows the pale man eating
and killing innocent children. Ofelia is scared when she looks at this thinking that this might happen
to her as well. The painting gives us some basic knowledge about the pale man which engages the
audience to think more and what will happen to Ofelia. Engaging the audience builds suspense and
horror to the scene. – The close up shot of small shoes suggest that they are little children's shoes
and there are no children to be seen. This suggest that the pale man has eaten and killed those
innocent little kids. This frightens Ofelia more.

Editing, Cinematography, and Sound in Gladiator
The film that I have chosen to analyse is Gladiator. I have chosen to analyse the scene where the
gladiators are battling in the Middle East. The scene contains many features and editing techniques
which make the fight sequence exciting and thrilling. The scene begins with a medium high angle
shot of a goat with blood dripping down its body. This shot frames the body of the goat and gives it
a sense of vulnerability. The shot creates meaning to the viewer who can predict that the scene
might contain violence or bloodshed of some sort. The camera then zooms outward into an

The lighting is very low key and most of the light filters from the roof, overhead. The overhead
lighting dominates the gladiatorÂ's faces and brings out their facial features. This effect shows the
faces of the gladiatorÂ's and their anticipation of the battle which is about to commence. Non
diegetic orchestral music starts to begin once more building the tension. The camera then cuts into a
close up of every gladiator whilst moving slowly to the side where it stops and gives us a side view
shot of the gladiatorÂ's showing in detail their facial expressions. This is where the dialogue of the
main character begins and the camera moves slowly to a medium low angle shot, thus giving the
character a sense of authority. The character speaks slowly and when he accentuates an important
point the camera moves to a close up of the main character of the film (Russell Crowe), showing the
viewer his feelings and his anticipation. In the background there is the external diegetic sound of the
crowd chanting, kill, kill, kill. This along with the orchestral music sounds like a heart beat as there
is a short pause between every chant. Again the heart beat sound reiterates the anticipation of the
gladiators; this is effective as it makes the scene more exciting and exhilarating to watch. The mimic
of the heart beat and chanting are

Evaluation of the Opening Scenes of an Episode of the X–Files
The opening sequence of the 'X–Files' episode 'Tooms' uses a variety of techniques to capture the
attention of the audience.
The 'X–Files' is a very popular television series written by Chris Carter. The series can be described
as a 'hybrid' genre because it reflects a number of different genres. The obvious genre is Science
Fiction because one of the main themes of the series is the paranormal. However there are strong
elements of the Mystery/Detective genre as the two main characters, which are FBI investigators,
seek to find the truth of the paranormal. There is also a Horror/Gothic element to the series because

The affect of this is that the man seems vulnerable, and raises the audience's suspicion of what is
going to happen to him.
There is then a tracking shot of the man inter–cut with a close up of a roadside drain, where the
creature 'Tooms' is lurking. When focused on the drain, the camera slowly zooms in. when the
camera cuts back to the man; it is a low angle tracking shot. This low angle shot gives the
impression to the audience that they are looking through the eyes of whatever is in the drain. This
gives the scene a sinister and foreboding atmosphere.
This is emphasised when the camera zooms in of the businessman in a low angle shot and gradually
becomes slow motion. The entire colour is then drained out of the frame except for the man. This
emphasises the earlier point, and suggests the creature in the drain is focusing all his attention and
malice on the man. At this point there is a section of music that sounds computer generated, almost
alien. This adds to the malice of the creature and is repeated throughout the opening scene when
there is evidence that the creature in the drain is near.
This shot is then followed by a close up of the drain, showing two strange pale eyes. This maintains
the audiences attention because it makes them want to discover what is in the drain and why it is
there.
The camera then cuts to a shot of a

Whale Rider Film Analysis
In the film 'Whale Rider', by Niki Caro which follows the journey of a young girl named Paikea
Apirana and her struggle for acceptance as a leader of her Māori iwi, and especially her grandfather.
An important character in this film is Pai herself. This character has significant importance as she is
used to portray numerous important ideas and themes throughout the film. Pai helps me to
understand and appreciate that women can also be leaders that are equal to men if they have the
right attributes. The director Niki Caro uses numerous different film techniques to convey this idea,
such as; the camera shots and camera angles when Pai is giving her speech to Koro, the use of
camera angles and props in relation to the dialogue when Pai if fixing the motorboat engine, and the
use of props when Pai is teaching herself to use the Taiaha. The use of camera shots and camera
angles while she is giving her speech to Koro, helps to show Pai's important attributes which are
necessary for a good leader. One of these shots is the low angle while Pai is giving her speech. Low
angles are often used to give the focus object or person a feeling or respect, even if Pai is crying,
which shows that Pai is respected by the community. As she is crying during this scene, and the
director still chooses to use a low angle, consequently, this shows that she is a strong, powerful, and
resilient figure, which are especially important attributes of a leader.
Additionally, in this scene is a wide shot down the aisle of the hall, with Pai in the middle, and
framed by the audience. Furthermore, this exhibits that the community supports Pai, even at her
weakest and most fragile, while she is in tears on the stage. The support of a community is an
important attribute for a leader to have, due to the importance of leadership is not just being one
person, and is also the whole community. The camera shots and camera angles helped the audience
as well as myself to understand the importance of Pai and helped myself and the audience
understand and appreciate Niki Caro's idea that women can also be leaders that can be equal to men

It is intriguing to witness the development of technological shift in society. The newest technology

forms of media are originated. The style in which images, sound, and text are developed is much

Pulp Fiction by Quinton Tarantino falls into the genre of a Gangster film but has elements of other
genres as well like Film Noir and Black Comedy. Pulp Fiction has a balance of drama and comedy
along with hard to watch scenes like rape, violence, gore and heavy drug use. Tarantino's style of
movie making help make Pulp Fiction the classic it is today. The mise–en–scene, cinematography
and other elements of movie, including sound effects and round characters leave us intrigued as well
as content with the story structure as well as its ending.
The storyline jumps from one storyline to the next and presented in nonchronological order.
Tarantino gives us bits and pieces of one story then jumps to another. This style of narrative is
unusual. Ultimately, the whole story comes full circle. The opening scene ends where the scene
began. We see the conclusion of the robbery and how it connects to the film.
In one of the first scenes with Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield, we see the pair going to collect

Romeo And Juliet Death Scene Essay
Baz Lurhmann's Romeo and Juliet has adapted different film techniques in the first scene and final
death scene using different methods whilst still holding on to the original Shakespearean mixture of
love, hate, excitement, foreboding and passion (Marked by Teachers, 2012 ). Baz Lurhmann's
Romeo and Juliet has a very dramatic opening because we see a new modernistic beginning in
comparison with William Shakespeare's play. The types of filmic devices that were used in the film
were all very different. This essay will aim to discuss how Baz Lurhmann captured the original story
and combined it with a contemporary location and style, with the use of a great number of filmic
devices in his 1996 production of Romeo and Juliet.

This frustrates the audience because Juliet does not speak to him. Romeo takes the poison, he dies,
and the silence after his death is so tense. We then hear the sound of Juliet crying when she loads the
gun on her, and moments later, the sound of the gun shot echoes. The camera shows the two lovers
happy in death and we see a flashback that reminds the audience of the night they met and the happy
moments that they shared together. The flashback gives the audience the idea of their troubled but
happy relationship that they had and helps the audience to have some connection with their tragedy.
Martin (2002:41) further proposes that Lurhmann's Romeo and Juliet makes much use of flashback
and flash–forward to add to the drama of the script; as his style suggests irony and downplays the
role of fate in the story. Baz Lurhmann (1996) picture (see Figure 1 below) extreme close–up,

Analysis Of Mikhail Kalatozov's Film I Am Cuba
A Call of the Revolution
Watching Mikhail Kalatozov's film I am Cuba (1967) is a moving cinematic experience. In the
beginning, the film portrays a stereotypical Cuba through a carefree party on the rooftop and the
contrasting scenes of the prostitute's destitute village and the glamorous casino. The film depicts
how Cuba moves from a repressed country to an epicenter of revolution through four vignettes in
which each builds momentum to the next and an overall narrator that bridges the stories. The film
narrates a movement starting with how the oppressive capitalists exploit Cuba and push the people
over the edge. In the second half, the Cuban people move from passivity to actions, shown by a
university protest and a villager joining the militia in a revolution to overthrow the corrupt regime.
Among the vignettes, Enrique's leadership in the university student protest stands out the most.
Complemented by the shift in the camera's perspective of space in relation to characters, it is a
crucial turning point where the plot changes from the focus on a powerless individual to a vision
depicting the power of collective action.
Enrique's mission to assassinate the chief of police is a failed individual quest. The camera distorts
the viewers' senses and "moves with fundamental autonomy from the protagonist" to convey the
futility of the individual against the formidable political establishment (Oukaderova, 70). He loses

'Kane's investigation ploy carries us toward analyzing how causality and goal–orientated characters
may operate in narratives' (David Bordwell, 1979, p. 78). Citizen Kane has five narrators, Susan
Kane's second wife, Leland a close friend who gives a personal input, Raymond who was Kane's
butler, Bernstein his friend and employee and finally Thatcher the banker who became his legal
guardian. Thompson had tracked each individual down to recover as much information as possible
on Kane to include in his investigation. Each account is varies quite a lot as every narrator had a
different opinion on Kane. Using numerous narrators can work extremely well as it gives different
sides to the story and diverse opinion which helps in having an unbiased investigation. The plot of
Kane becomes more complex due to the fact there is numerous sides to different stories coming
from individual narrators. This form of narration has important effects for the film. 'While
Thompson uses the various narrators to gather data, the plot uses them to both furnish with story
information and to conceal information' (David Bordwell, 1979, p. 88). The fact that Welles uses
five narrators shows the audience that not one person themselves can be aware of all the
information. This technique of narration works particularly well in this film. The fact that there are

The Director, Danny Devito, Is Evil And Malicious ( Mean )?
What techniques does the director, Danny DeVito, use in the film 'Matilda' to illustrate that the
character, Ms Agatha Trunchbull, is evil and malicious (mean)? The film 'Matilda' was directed by
Danny DeVito and was released in 1996. The director uses multiple film techniques to depict
Agatha Trunchbull as an evil and malicious character. These techniques include a range of different
angles, low key and bottom lighting as well as an out dated sense of style and a variety of diegetic
sounds Firstly, the director of 'Matilda' uses low camera angles to depict Ms Trunchbull as
aggressive and derogatory to others. During the scene in which both Miss Honey and Ms Trunchbull
are in Ms Trunchbull's office the camera angles used are both low angled shots that are extremely
close to Ms Trunchbull's face. Shots like this make Ms Trunchbull look visually unappealing as the
highlight or amplify her imperfections. Also used in this scene are shots that display the whole of
miss honey and only a small part (i.e. the head) of Ms Trunchbull's body. This portrays Ms
Trunchbull as powerful and intimidating. Although these shots and angles are used throughout the
majority of the movie there is one scene in particular the table turn and the power is changed. This is
the scene which displays the whole school in the hallway throwing food at Ms Trunchbull. A high
angle shot is taken to display that Ms Trunchbull is no longer in power and is quite insignificant.

Film Techniques

  • 1. Film Techniques The Effectiveness of the Techniques Used in Film Trailers in Persuading Their Target Audiences Media is communication. The main purposes of media are to entertain and to inform. Television, newspapers/magazines, adverts and the internet are the most well known forms of media. Trailers are designed to advertise the film, giving a good impression in a small amount of time so that people will either go to see the film, or buy the film, hence making money for the people involved. The trailers chosen were 'Charlie's Angles – Full Throttle' and 'Terminator 3 – Rise of the Machines'. They were chosen because they had a large appeal and both used a wide range of presentation techniques. The genres of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The majority of the audience is the same as the genre of the film – science fiction. I know this because it shows elements usually found in science fiction films such as robots. The fans of Arnold Schwarzenegger would be interested by the trailer because it shows him in a lot of the shots, has his name written boldly across one of the stills, and he is famous for his rolls as the terminator. It shows many exciting parts of the film, showing many explosions, lots of gunfire and a great deal of fighting. This would appeal to the action loving audience. Also, there is a shot of an attractive naked woman walking across the road, which would attract a male audience. The trailers both use different aspects of the film to advertise it. The 'Charlie's Angels' trailer plays more on humour and sex appeal, for example the 'sorry I broke your stick' scene, whereas 'Terminator 3' uses the plot and the action to attract people. I think the audience for 'Charlie's Angels' is mainly female or young boys, whereas with 'Terminator 3' I think the trailer would appeal to an older audience, possibly more male than female. Both trailers have a certain sex appeal. This shows that a sexual element in films attracts a lot of people. The purpose of all trailers is to advertise the film and attract ... • 2. Essay on Analysis of Halloween Film Trailer Analysis of Halloween Film Trailer I have decided to look at a trailer that was filmed in 1978 called Halloween directed by John Carpenter. The purpose of the trailer is to tease the audience into wanting to see the film but also to identify genre through conventions and create opinions in the audiences mind. The genre of my trailer is cross generic horror; appealing to a wide target audience. The horror genre is represented through the scenes involving blood and violence. Conventions of the trailer include the length, use of settings, characters, music, sound effects, and colours. The settings of an isolated house, in the dark on Halloween night are conventional of the horror genre as they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The trailer is introduced by zooming in on a house; this creates tension and shows the significance of the house. Furthermore the white coloured house is a representation of innocence, the black background behind it, draws attention to the house and reiterates its significance, the narrator quotes, "He's come home", also representing its significance. Later on in the trailer we are seeing what's happening through the eyes of the villain, this is a very long, in time, shot of the same view through a mask, which is not typical of a horror trailer but works, as it is consistently scary. The straight cut to a doctor talking is to represent a professional opinion, adding to character development as a stereotypical doctor represents a trustworthy character for the audience. The character introduced as the main victim is a young, attractive girl, who is a babysitter this is a representation of innocence also following the conventional "children in jeopardy" scenario creating tension and fear for the audience. The trailer shows realism through the settings, characters and music. The settings is in a stereotypically little, small–populated village. The sound effects of screaming represent realism as they show real fear and emotion. Iconography is use throughout the trailer to identify certain things. The use of the pumpkin seen next to the title represents ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Manliness Through Camera Angle And Zoom Analysis The Change in Manliness Through Camera Angle and Zoom By April of 1945, the second World War was drawing to a close. Nazi Germany was unraveling as the allies were closing in on Berlin. However, the battle for the Pacific was still raging. The movie Hacksaw Ridge by Mel Gibson encapsulates the vicious fighting between the Americans and Japanese during the battle of Okinawa. The movie depicts the struggle Private Desmond Doss (played by Andrew Garfield) during boot camp, and battle, faced from his fellow soldiers because of his extreme religious practices. In the middle of the film, during boot camp, we can see that the platoon bully Doss in the barracks, especially Private Smitty. In this scene, through camera angle and camera zoom, Mel Gibson encapsulates the discrimination and group mentality of the platoon against Doss. After the initial assault however, and after Doss single handedly saves seventy or more soldiers, the platoon waits for Doss to finish his prayer before assaulting Hacksaw Ridge the second time. By showing this scene, Mel Gibson destroys the connotation that a man is only judged by his physicality and toughness. By showing that Desmond is the most courageous man in the platoon without being violent, it shows that religion and self–belief is what a man is truly judged on. The first shot of the barracks invites the audience to see the harassment through Desmond's eyes as he is sitting on his bed reading his bible. Smitty is hanging in the background, ... • 4. Film Techniques In Blade Runner In the movie "Blade runner", Ridley Scott the director, incorporates the filming techniques lighting, sounds, setting and camera angles. The ways Scott draws the audience into the film and what the purpose of the film as whole is very interesting. Throughout the movie, Scott uses lighting as a technique to enhance the emotional effects of his audience. One scene in which lighting can be interpreted is below. When we are shown Deckard's apartment in other scenes, the details of the space are barely distinguishable. The apartment is incredibly dark and void of visible details. This is a parallel to the character of Deckard himself. Deckard comes across as keeping all emotion within and not being very expressive. This is in the nature of his profession and he is therefore sometimes seen as cold or emotionless. This character attribute changes when it comes to his relationship with Rachael. In the scene below the apartment is lit far more than normal. The viewer is now able to see details about the space. It is later in this scene that the true feelings of Deckard are seen when Rachael tries to leave the apartment and Deckard proceeds to block the door, throw Rachael against a window, and kiss her. Deckard opens up and shows true emotion, just as the space of his apartment opens and we are shown more detail than ever before. • 5. Truth In Ron Howard's Film A Beautiful Mind Ron Howard manipulates responders views of verisimilitude to illustrate that each individual's understanding of truth may be unique. Through careful analysis of filmic devices we as a responder are able to see that in Ron Howard's film A Beautiful Mind that truth can be subjective and also that an external perspective is required to reveal and confirm truth. Howard's film A Beautiful Mind clearly shows that truth can be subjective, this is seen in many instances throughout the whole film. In the hallway scene at Princeton where Nash is saying goodbye to Marcee there is a medium shot being from the professor who is poking his head out of the doorway being used and also in conjunction to this the scene is tightly framed. • 6. Christopher Nol An Auteur And Postmodern Filmmaker Christopher Nolan is an auteur and postmodern filmmaker. He started off making low budget 'indie' films, his first being Doodlebug. He has now risen to being one of the biggest names in Hollywood and creating blockbusters that not only are visual masterpieces but thought provoking journeys. He respects film as an art form, thus allowing him to create some of the top ranked films this century and The Dark Night and Momento are even classed among the greatest films of all time. He has 122 major wins and 163 nominations, most notably three Oscars, three golden globes and three BAFTAS. His films have grossed a total of US$4.2 billion making him, not only one of the most visionary, but one of the most successful directors of all time. Many say "what he's trying to be is some kind of modern Kubrick. I think he'd be better off being a modern Hitchcock " I believe he is a mix of the two, both pleasing the general audience and those that are there for intellectual stimulation. After Doodlebug gained him critical attention he then moved on to a bigger project, Following. The films I will analyse are The Prestige and Interstellar, which are films filled with his trademark of non–linear storytelling, grand–camera angles and powerful diegetic and non–diegetic sounds. One of the films I have chosen to study is The Prestige. In this film there are many time cuts. The plotline is truly non–linear (non–chronological). In this film Nolan masterfully weaves separate plotlines and timelines ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Commercial Photography Analysis 1. I would say that the photograph below can be considered art. Based on my perspective, even without the use of models in the commercial photography, the beauty of the landscape in the background is enough to satisfy the requirement of art in my standards. In my perspective, the purpose of art is to express and share the vision of the photographer. With the plentiful trees in the background, the small circle in the foreground, and the river in between, the natural landmarks are enough for me to consider it to be art. Now, when considering the significance of the people in the photograph, with the added significance of the landscape in the background, is another matter. Photography, like any other art, is a mode for expression. Sometimes it is the expression of what the photographer considers important, and at other times it is an expression of the client's interests matched with the photographer's skill. In this case, as it was pointed out, the bride is clearly in the center of the photograph, with both the young man, perhaps the groom, and another man beside her. With the placement of these elements, she does appear to be the focus of the photograph. The groom appears to be quite close to her, looking ahead, and they both appear smiling, so they are posing to capture a moment in time, one that is quite important for them that they wish to express and remember. Yet, is it enough to be considered art in the area of commercial photography? Since the objective of the photograph is an expression of ... • 8. The Hunger Games Mise En Scene While it is perceived that The Hunger Games is about action and romance, there is a deeper meaning behind this well–known movie. The movie is essentially about a nation, Panem, that has been divided between rich and poor. The rich lived in the Capitol and the poor lived in the twelve districts. In the beginning of the movie, the upper class is shown to be dominant and superior. However, as the movie goes on, the lower classes begin to rebel in order to make their voices heard and to not be looked down upon any longer. To some, living in the Capitol would seem like the ideal situation; this is because the poor had fewer opportunities and privileges. The wealthy lived fair lives and had no worry about being selected to participate in The Hunger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By doing so, the audience can feel sympathy, drama, and suspense throughout the film. A good example of a low angle shot is when District Ten is listening to the organizer of the games. When he is picking tribunes, the angle of the camera is down which displays that the tribunes are inferior to the organizer. The different types of shots also bring attention to something the director wants the audience to focus on. Along with informing the viewers of something from the character's view point. A majority of the film is shot in subjective view, giving the audience an extension of Katniss and seeing what she is seeing. Although this is the case, there are objective shots to show the viewers the computer generated special effects in the film. It is also noticeable that the editing used helped capture the concept of social class in this film. The Hunger Games is shot in chronological order, with little flashbacks. The flashbacks that are used in this film are to understand the relationship between characters, but this is a very brief part of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Carolyn Burnham in American Beauty Essay Carolyn Burnham in American Beauty Directed by Sam Mendes in 1999, 'American Beauty' is set in a seemingly typical suburban neighbourhood that gives an in depth look beneath the surface. An ordinary, financially well–to–do family is followed through the point of view of the father (Kevin Spacey). He narrates his life and lets the audience in on all of his quirks, flaws and limitations, as well as those of his wife Carolyn (Annette Bening) and his daughter (Thora Birch). The film exemplifies the idea of achieving the 'American Dream' – not necessarily to reach your ultimate goal in life but to portray the image of reaching that goal. In addition, the film won 5 Oscars, including best picture and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the clients disapprove and question her selling techniques 'the ad says the pool is lagoon–like, there is nothing lagoon like about it. This is cement hole'. In shot 25, her body language changes from being open and relaxed to desperate and sarcastic, 'What do you call this, is THIS not a plant!' Here she is shown to be desperate, with a nervous smile fixed on her face, which reveals that her character does not like failure. By the use of language we learn that Carolyn Is frightened of failure, hates to loose and becomes desperate and needy when plans don't go in her favour. • 10. Romeo And Juliet Techniques Fate, the unpredictable and inescapable rope, which controls every aspect of our lives, has plagued mankind. The power of fate has broached out through a story called Romeo and Juliet. This story is originally written by William Shakespeare, who was a renowned playwright during 16th century. It is a story of two star–crossed lovers from two rival families in the city of Verona who seek their love. This story has been made into several movies and the first modern Shakespearean movie which is directed by Luhrmann was born during 20th century. He uses film techniques to help make Shakespearian language understandable to a modern audience such as camera works to convey the idea of an unchangeable destiny for Romeo and Juliet. When Romeo and Juliet first meet each other, they are separated by a large blue fish tank. The soft music with the sound of piano playing at the back presents its calmness and peacefulness of the mood. The deep blue water, soft pastel colours of pink and blue all give the effect of romance. Both Romeo and Juliet's faces are zoomed into in order to help the audience acquire an understanding of the deep love both characters have fallen into. Long shot is used to show their emotions and certain relationships. When the party is over, Juliet is with her mother, Lady Capulet, on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 11. The Dark Mood Of Citizen Kane Personally, I did sense a change in the overall "mood" of the film, (through the progression of scenes and such). I thought that it became lighter but also (mainly) darker throughout the whole movie. For one, the director Orson Welles, opened the entire movie with a very caliginous, horrendous and intimidating scene–that follows the death of the main character or "hero" of the film. So, right off the bat a very daunt thing occurred. As the movie progresses, I felt the dark mood begin to (in a very minuscule way) deplete a little, and grow almost lighter. As the movie continued, it seemed like it was reversing in Kane's life, showing his affair, his first wife's relationship, his campaign for becoming the governor etc. It continues like this throughout the entire story. But, as it lightens it also grows darker as well, hitting on the points of Kane's life that were unforgivable (leaving his family, forcing his new wife to sing, etc). In these moments the mood grew darker. Since the movie was based off of Citizen Kane (and basically his rude behavior) the mood did grow darker in more aspects but, it had light hearted moments, especially in the end when the researchers and other people were going through Kane's house and personal items, they seemed to joke and state Kane's life in a blunt way–it was almost as if the somewhat apologetic manner for Kane's death was simply a social need. Whenever someone commits one's last breath, it is polite and socially correct to pay your ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Crop Duster Sequence Of North By Northwest In This essay I will discuss the use of camera movements, framing and the editing devices in the crop–duster sequence of North by Northwest (Alfred Hitchcock, USA, 1959) By focusing on these three techniques I hope to establish what effect they have on us and how that effect is achieved? I will look closely and analyse certain shots in this sequence, which I feel are significant in creating suspense. By dissecting the layers of each shot, I hope to reveal the technique and intentions behind them. The first significant shot I will discuss is just after Eva Marie Saint's face dissolves. This extreme aerial shot established the vast area in which Cary Grant faces. The camera stays in its fixed high angle as a bus approaches with Grant. The bus drives off and the camera angle and frame do not change. This establishes the setting for the viewers. "Such extreme high angle shots make characters into pawns" (E. Roger, 2008, 4). In other words it evokes the insignificance of a single human being in such a vast and secluded area. With nothing around the slow pacing in the beginning of this sequence can be seen as a tantalising build up of suspense, not knowing what to expect. It cuts to a long shot and low angle as Grant waits by the side of the road. This emphasises the space he is in and "establishes the characters level of power and control" (Class notes, Introduction to Cinema) A medium shot of Grant by the sign met with an eyeline match of approaching cars, which Kaplan ... This immediately gets the audience thinking and creates deep effect because the audience is getting into the film and makes them think and feel tension. He is focussing on the helicopter in the air, the effect this has shows the audience that the prince; someone important is arriving therefore its as if we look up to him, however this can make the audience feel small and vulnerable. The next technique I will be focussing on is editing and shot transitions. In the first scene we see the introduction on ' Romeo and Juliet' with voices talking and background music. Then a wipe out edit is used to introduce the Montague boys who are in their car. The effect this has is that it reduces tension; because during the introduction it was building up by continuous flicking shots, which created a sense of tension, then it all stops and focuses on the Capulate boys which then reduces the tension. As a result it also introduces comedy and creates a slightly more calm effect. Another type of edit Lurhmann uses is a freeze frame. This is used on several occasions, one of them being as the camera focuses on Capulates heel and slowly moves up the body, where the freeze frame is focussed on Capulates face. This ... Mise En Scene In Psycho From the quote, we are able to see that all , if not most , of Hitchcock's films seek to play with the viewer's emotions, often by leaving crumbs of suspense before the action, making the viewers go through a myriad of emotions. Hence, for Psycho, I will be discussing three scenes where Hitchcock has deliberately and precisely controlled via the film medium, to engage us. Argobhast and Norman's conversation scene. In this scene, we see Argobhast's journey towards finding out the true reason of Marion's disappearance and hence, Hitchcock plays us via Norman and Argobhast's first interaction. Marion then takes the seat closer to the tiffany lamp while Norman takes the seat at the opposite side of the room which is noticeably darker. Mise en scence in this scene does the most to capture the true personalities of the characters. For Marion, Hitchcock has deliberately surrounded her with objects such as the lamp which is actually the only source of light for the whole room, a pitcher of milk and several other scenic objects. Furthermore, the milk may perhaps symbolize innocence that despite the crime committed, there is a redeeming quality within Marion that will save her. It is undeniable that Citizen Kane is the epitome of the great American film. It was initially released in 1941 and was met with great criticism . However, since its release many years ago it is evident that the film made advancements in cinema techniques which were well ahead of its time . The foremost reason Citizen Kane is considered one of the great American films ever created is due to the innovative film techniques that director Orson Welles brought to life .These techniques include new methods for cinematography, lighting, and sound . The cinematography in Citizen Kane is one of the primary reasons it is viewed as one of the most celebrated works in cinema. The initiation of new approaches to cinematography is greatly credited to cinematographer Greg Toland. Toland who was known for his work as director of photography for such films as Dead End (1937), Wuthering Heights (1939) which he won an academy award for, The Grapes of Wrath (1940), and many more. The collaboration between Welles and Toland broke the traditions of atypical 1940 's film. Essentially, this meant that there should not be great attention to participation of the camera. In the background there is the external diegetic sound of the crowd chanting, kill, kill, kill. This along with the orchestral music sounds like a heart beat as there is a short pause between every chant. Again the heart beat sound reiterates the anticipation of the gladiators; this is effective as it makes the scene more exciting and exhilarating to watch. Evaluation of the Opening Scenes of an Episode of the X–Files The opening sequence of the 'X–Files' episode 'Tooms' uses a variety of techniques to capture the attention of the audience. The 'X–Files' is a very popular television series written by Chris Carter. The series can be described as a 'hybrid' genre because it reflects a number of different genres. The obvious genre is Science Fiction because one of the main themes of the series is the paranormal. However there are strong elements of the Mystery/Detective genre as the two main characters, which are FBI investigators, seek to find the truth of the paranormal. There is also a Horror/Gothic element to the series because many investigations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When focused on the drain, the camera slowly zooms in. when the camera cuts back to the man; it is a low angle tracking shot. This is emphasised when the camera zooms in of the businessman in a low angle shot and gradually becomes slow motion. The entire colour is then drained out of the frame except for the man. This emphasises the earlier point, and suggests the creature in the drain is focusing all his attention and malice on the man. At this point there is a section of music that sounds computer generated, almost alien. This adds to the malice of the creature and is repeated throughout the opening scene when there is evidence that the creature in the drain is near. Romeo And Juliet Death Scene Essay Baz Lurhmann's Romeo and Juliet has adapted different film techniques in the first scene and final death scene using different methods whilst still holding on to the original Shakespearean mixture of love, hate, excitement, foreboding and passion (Marked by Teachers, 2012 ). Baz Lurhmann's Romeo and Juliet has a very dramatic opening because we see a new modernistic beginning in comparison with William Shakespeare's play. The types of filmic devices that were used in the film were all very different. The camera shows the two lovers happy in death and we see a flashback that reminds the audience of the night they met and the happy moments that they shared together. The flashback gives the audience the idea of their troubled but happy relationship that they had and helps the audience to have some connection with their tragedy. Martin (2002:41) further proposes that Lurhmann's Romeo and Juliet makes much use of flashback and flash–forward to add to the drama of the script; as his style suggests irony and downplays the role of fate in the story. • 35. Analysis Of Mikhail Kalatozov's Film I Am Cuba A Call of the Revolution Watching Mikhail Kalatozov's film I am Cuba (1967) is a moving cinematic experience. In the beginning, the film portrays a stereotypical Cuba through a carefree party on the rooftop and the contrasting scenes of the prostitute's destitute village and the glamorous casino. The film depicts how Cuba moves from a repressed country to an epicenter of revolution through four vignettes in which each builds momentum to the next and an overall narrator that bridges the stories. The film narrates a movement starting with how the oppressive capitalists exploit Cuba and push the people over the edge. In the second half, the Cuban people move from passivity to actions, shown by a university protest and a villager joining the militia in a revolution to overthrow the corrupt regime. Among the vignettes, Enrique's leadership in the university student protest stands out the most. Complemented by the shift in the camera's perspective of space in relation to characters, it is a crucial turning point where the plot changes from the focus on a powerless individual to a vision depicting the power of collective action. Enrique's mission to assassinate the chief of police is a failed individual quest. The camera distorts the viewers' senses and "moves with fundamental autonomy from the protagonist" to convey the futility of the individual against the formidable political establishment (Oukaderova, 70). He loses his sense of direction when he acts independent of his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Citizen Kane has five narrators, Susan Kane's second wife, Leland a close friend who gives a personal input, Raymond who was Kane's butler, Bernstein his friend and employee and finally Thatcher the banker who became his legal guardian. Thompson had tracked each individual down to recover as much information as possible on Kane to include in his investigation. Each account is varies quite a lot as every narrator had a different opinion on Kane. Using numerous narrators can work extremely well as it gives different sides to the story and diverse opinion which helps in having an unbiased investigation. The plot of Kane becomes more complex due to the fact there is numerous sides to different stories coming from individual narrators. This form of narration has important effects for the film. 'While Thompson uses the various narrators to gather data, the plot uses them to both furnish with story information and to conceal information' (David Bordwell, 1979, p. 88). • 37. The Director, Danny Devito, Is Evil And Malicious ( Mean )? What techniques does the director, Danny DeVito, use in the film 'Matilda' to illustrate that the character, Ms Agatha Trunchbull, is evil and malicious (mean)? The film 'Matilda' was directed by Danny DeVito and was released in 1996. The director uses multiple film techniques to depict Agatha Trunchbull as an evil and malicious character. These techniques include a range of different angles, low key and bottom lighting as well as an out dated sense of style and a variety of diegetic sounds Firstly, the director of 'Matilda' uses low camera angles to depict Ms Trunchbull as aggressive and derogatory to others. During the scene in which both Miss Honey and Ms Trunchbull are in Ms Trunchbull's office the camera angles used are both low angled shots that are extremely close to Ms Trunchbull's face. Shots like this make Ms Trunchbull look visually unappealing as the highlight or amplify her imperfections. Also used in this scene are shots that display the whole of miss honey and only a small part (i.e. the head) of Ms Trunchbull's body. This portrays Ms Trunchbull as powerful and intimidating. Although these shots and angles are used throughout the majority of the movie there is one scene in particular the table turn and the power is changed. This is the scene which displays the whole school in the hallway throwing food at Ms Trunchbull. A high angle shot is taken to display that Ms Trunchbull is no longer in power and is quite insignificant. Angles such as high angles make the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
