Red, black, and white are used to convey passion and rebellion for one magazine aimed at inked, rebellious males aged 18-22. Another magazine uses grey and black with a touch of red to depict sophistication for males in their early 20s. A third magazine uses a rough, distorted font and bright colors to appeal to late adolescents and early 20s through a punk rock aesthetic.
4. This magazine appeals to me because of itโs simple, yet effective layout. The main image is the stereotypical look of the target audience โ inked up, rebellious males in their late adolescent to early twenties who are passionate about music, and are most probably in a band or want to be! The fonts used are sans-serif, which will appear to the target audience. The magazine also includes freebies, which will appeal to the target audience.
5. This magazine has quite a simple layout, only using black, white and red as itโs main colours. The connotations of these colours being anger, love and passion, which reflects the passion and love for music the magazine has, along with the heavy โangryโ rock music. The fonts used for the cover lines are simple. The masthead stands out, using an eye catching font. The font used represents broken glass, which reflects the rough, rebellious edge to the magazine. The images used are all studio shots, and are all, with one exception *, a serious image โ this reflects the serious attitude the magazine has towards itโs music. *The one exception, being Hayley Williams of Paramore (lower right) is a fun image. This suggests the magazine isnโt all serious, it has itโs fun โI donโt careโ attitude as well. This magazine is aimed at late adolescent to early twenties. 6. This magazine appeals to me because of itโs use of colour and graphology. The colours are bright and reflect the magazines bright attitude. The font is rough, distorted, and defiantly reflects the stereotype of punk-rock. This magazine is also aimed at late adolescence to early twenties. The masthead is hidden by the main image, which suggests they know their brand is so well known, they donโt need to fully show their name. The layout is simple, yet effective. The photographs used reflect the music in the magazine. Billie Joe (far right) is dressed in black with a real โIโve got attitudeโ pose, which reflects half of the magazines image; Itโs not afraid to take risks and doesnโt stay within the lines, much like the music. AFI (left) however, have less of an attitude about them, yet still showing they are serious about their music by looking into the distance โ focusing on their future. Again, like the magazine; they are serious about getting readers, whilst focusing on their future.
7. This magazine gives off an immediate feel of sophistication. This front cover in particular suggests the target audience is males in their early twenties. The use of grey and black suggests sophistication, which contrasts with the red, which suggests passion. The overall look is sexy sophistication โ which would defiantly appeal to, what I think, is the target audience. The magazine doesnโt appeal to me personally, as I feel itโs too sophisticated and doesnโt have a fun side. The sloโgo backs up the look of the magazine โ โa different take on a musicโ. Bauer Media audience profile โ โOpen minded experience seekers, the Q audience donโt define themselves by the music they listen to. Music is an important passion, but their love of music will never be to the detriment of their other passions, such as film, sport and comedy.โ
