Public Shaming As A Punishment
The idea of public shaming as a punishment is an idea that goes back centuries in history. In modern times the setting of public shaming has shifted
from outside in public to inside on the internet. People are attacked and publically shamed for all to see through social media platforms such as
Facebook, Twitter and much more. The idea of media shaming is an important idea to consider and to question about the effects that it has on a
person's life. People should care about the issue because it can happen to anyone, at anytime, from just one simple mistake. The idea of public shaming
through the internet is not an acceptable form of punishment in modern society because it can cause deep and long lasting psychological damage,
cause people to lose their jobs, and allows the perpetrators to hide behind a screen and remain unidentified.
One of the major reasons why public shaming is not an acceptable form of punishment in today's society is because it can cause deep and long lasting
psychological damage. Usually after someone has received their punishment they can move on with their lives but when someone is humiliated they
get psychological damage with effects that can stay with them for the rest of their lives. In the article "Hide and Seek," Neel Burton says that, "
Humiliation is traumatic and often hushed up, whereas embarrassment, given enough time, can be sublimed into a humorous anecdote." What Neel is
really saying here is that although someone can be embarrassed, the

Humiliation In The Middle School
The focal issue addressed in "The Under– Appreciated Role of The Humiliation in the Middle School" is humiliation. According to this article, a
well–built feeling of embarrassment is what humiliation is referred to. Humiliation is an extremely considerable issue as it leads to an increase of
emotions that dispossess a person's self–esteem.

The Grand Impact Of Public Bullying By Cyberbullying
The grand impact of public humiliation brought on by cyberbullying, and those using this for a financial gain. With just one click someone's personal
reputation can be shattered instantaneously. For some people the public humiliation had been unbearable, and tragically take the lives. Lewinsky
believes we need a shift to a long held value of compassion and empathy that we now lack. I agree with this argument. For the first time cyberbullying
is leading to suicidal ideations. The invasion of others privacy has emerged a marketplace for public humiliation. The responsibilities that come with
our freedom of expression. I will now discuss my evidence.
For the first time cyberbullying has led to suicidal ideations as a meta–analysis done out of the Netherlands shows sadly more than offline bullying.
Lewinsky stated "Cruelty to others is nothing new, but online, technologically enhanced shaming is amplified, uncontained, and permanently
accessible." What Lewinsky is stating with this that we have always had public humiliation however not to the degree that we do now with social
media. Things would happen and it would be shameful, however once people forgot about it that was the end of it. Now with social media scandals
take on a whole new prospective, and unfortunately it is not always in a positive way. A complete stranger can have access to this information, and can
escalate a simple misunderstanding. It is easy to type in a cruel comment and not have to see the pain and

Analysis Of Mother Tongue By Amy Tan
Language as a combination of single words and different ideas affects us everyday in life. In the essay "Mother tongue" by Amy Tan, the author
describes how her mother's English influences her in her career and life that the "mother tongue" does not limit her as a writer, but shaped her and her
perception on life instead. And her attitude to her mother's English changes from the initial embarrassment to the final appreciation. Tan's attitude
towards her mother's English begins with embarrassment and humiliation. Growing up in an immigrant family which speaks imperfect English, Tan
witnesses many discriminations that her mother has encountered in department stores or at banks, those experiences help to shape Tan's opinion to
her mother's English. For example, Tan states that "[she] was ashamed of [her mother's] English. [She] believed that [her mother's] English reflected
the quality of what [her] mother had to say" (508). In young Amy's opinion, her mother's expressions and thoughts are broken and imperfect like the
way she speaks, and she believes that linguistic expression is linked to a person's intelligence. As a result, she was ashamed of her mother in public
because of her fractured English. Besides, Tan recalls another incident of her pretending to be her mother to communicate to a stockbroker. Tan's
mother was using broken English to give Tan instructions on how to talk on the phone. She describes that her mother said, "' So mad he lied to me,
losing me money'" ( Tan 508). The author uses dialogues as evidence to show the audience the way her mother speaks English: influent and fractured.
Tan has to help her mother to communicate with people only as a teenager due to her mother's poor English skills. Tan informs the audience that she
was " sitting there red–faced and quiet" (508) when she and her mother finally met the stockbroker in person. She uses the word "astonished" to
describe the stockbroker when he found the truth that the author wasn't the real Mrs. Tan. Young Amy was apparently embarrassed when she was
forced to speak as an adult to the stockbroker and deal with different problems beyond her age, and she develops a negative impression on the mother's
tongue. Even though the author

Bullying Is The Intentional Harm Doing Or Harrasement
What is bullying? It is the intentional harm–doing or harrasement directed to vulnerable people and is repeated quite often. Bullying can be done in
multiple ways. Some examples are: physical violence, verbal talk and/or threats and rumors being spread either verbally or online. Bullying can
happen to anyone, but mostly involves kids. There are ways to try and stop it and everyone should help in getting that rate down. ("Bullying
.–Britannica") This isn't something that is to be taken lightly but many people do, and it stays an issue in many places, especially at schools. A U.S.
national study done at the beginning of the 21st century stated 30 percent of kids, middle to high school, experienced bullying during their school
years. Research shows that it tends to start during early teen years and decreases in their later teen years, and it is showed to be done mostly by boys.
It can start from reactions to struggles and from power within a group. (Bullying–Britannica) It can also be done by kids who feel like having the
power or from those who come from homes where the adults fight or hurt each other. When girl's bully, they tend to do it in emotional ways, such as
excluding a certain girl or gossiping about her (Bullying– Topic overview). Bullying doesn't just apply to high school kids, but adults are also
experiencing it at work and by definition it is worse at work than in school. In the workplace, bullying often involves a person in power, such as a

Waiting For The Barbarians Analysis
Coetzee writes Waiting for the Barbarians through the point of view of the Magistrate of an unnamed Empire. The Empire resembles a colonialist
regime that views itself as both superior to and in opposition with the neighboring "barbarians." At first, the Magistrate is largely oblivious to the
violence and torture carried out by officers of the Empire, believing that Colonel Joll "finds out the truth" about the barbarians (4). The Magistrate treats
the line between truth and falsehood as clear and absolute, something that can be thoroughly investigated and uncovered. However, his view changes
when he hears Colonel Joll describe that "first [he] get[s] lies, you see–– this is what happens–– first lies, then pressure, then more lies, then more
pressure, then the break, then more pressure, then the truth. That is how you get the truth" (6). While the Magistrate initially believes in Joll's work, it
quickly becomes apparent that Colonel Joll is interested in a specific version of the truth. He treats the barbarian subjects as objects and uses them as a
means to an end, with the belief that truth is reached through the application of the greatest possible pain. After extreme torture, the barbarians become
willing to admit to Joll whatever he designates as the truth and reaffirm his hypotheses. The power dynamic between the officers of the Empire and the
barbarians renders this method of discovery both immoral and inaccurate. The novel centers around the relationship between the

Describe The Effects Of Humiliation In Society
A woman outcasted for her sin in a puritan society. A woman ridiculed for what actions she took with a high ranking official. A woman threatened for
what controversy she said. All of the following people have been exposed to some form of public humiliation, public humiliation has long been
outlived from its more primitive origin. However, the act of public shaming has evolved along with our technology to deepen the pain on the victim.
However the areas of their lives that are affected have stayed the same and rather just the way of shaming the victim has changed The following texts
describe the effect of humiliation on a person, The Scarlet Letter By Nathaniel Hawthorne, "The Price of Shame" by Monica Lewinsky, and "Is the
Internet a Mob Without Consequence?" by Nick Bolton. Public humiliation has always affected the culprit's personal, social, and personal lives. The
impact of humiliation on someone's social, professional lives is that the humiliated person will be an outcast in society, humiliation will ruin their
chances of attaining some type of profession and humiliation will distance themselves from the people in their personal lives The impact of
humiliation on someone's social life is that they will become an outcast in society. This is because the people in society will be so disgusted at what
acts the culprit did that the people will start to diverge away from this person. And this is one of the main points of humiliation, to make the culprit
aware that they are

The Importance Of School Dress Codes
Shoulders...knee caps...bra straps...collarbones...all scary, right? No? Well, if they aren't scaring you then they are glowing, right? No? If they aren't
scary or glowing then why are they so distracting? Emily Lindon writes about how school dress codes are sexist in her article "Why Sexist Dress
Codes Suck for Everyone." I don't believe that schools should make students feel uncomfortable with their bodies; I don't believe that schools should
make female students feel inferior to male students; I don't believe schools should humiliate students for their clothing choices. I believe that dress
codes are sexist.
A lot of people don't feel comfortable in their skin; they don't like the way they look; they are extremely self–conscious. If a school's dress code limits
what a student can wear it can make them feel even less confident. Emily says, "dress codes are also unfair to the students whose clothing they don't
regulate, the students whose bodies aren't seen as inherently 'offensive' or 'inappropriate'..." emphasizing that dress codes aren't enforced equally.
Different people have different body types; some people are tall and thin, short and chubby, tall and chubby, short and thin, flat chested or big busted,
small waisted or larger waisted, and more. If their clothes fit them and they are dress coded than this could attack their confidence level and make
them feel uncomfortable with their bodies. Girls are dress coded on everything: shoulders showing, bra strap showing, shorts ride

The Negative Side of Public Humiliation In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hester Prynne's punishment for adultery is to stand on a
scaffold in the middle of town for three hours, and to wear a scarlet letter on her garment for the rest of her life. Today judges sometimes use public
humiliation instead of traditional punishments, like jail time or community service, to punish criminals. In today's society public humiliation should
not continue be used to punish criminals in today's society. The use of public humiliation as an alternative for traditional punishments is an abuse of

There are also various reasons of why holding a child back could help the child. Holding the child back an extra year could mean extra success.
They could gain an extra year of school. The extra year of school could go toward more practice for a future career they could want. Also, staying

Wariuki's Wedding At The Cross
It is a common idea that traveling gives people a greater insight on the dynamics of the world as they experience different cultures and ways of life.
This can be seen in the short story Wedding at the Cross by Ngugi wa Thiong'o where traveling greatly influences the main character Wariuki's
outlook of the world. Wariuki starts off as being a very poor but very happy man until he gets humiliated by his father in law, Douglas Jones, for not
being wealthy enough to pay for a wedding at a church or provide for his wife. This ignites a fire in Wariuki to prove his Douglas Jones wrong and he
goes to great lengths to accumulate enough wealth to become higher class and not be looked down upon. The great lengths that Wariuki goes through

Wariuki was fortunate and escaped the negative aspects of the war and took advantage of the opportunities that came with. He set himself up as a
timber merchant and felt he finally was in a place where he could become very wealthy. This shows Wariuki as a changed man because he once
would have been with his people who were fighting and being put in concentration camps but instead chose to work for the colonial regime and took
advantage of the situation (Thiong'o 104). Wariuki's choice shows a change in moral conviction that can is linked to acquisition of wealth which was
Wariuki's life motivation. His travels throughout the world made him realize that being the "good guy" would not get him far in becoming wealthy
and proving his father in law wrong. As Wariuki realized how the world worked with his many unsuccessful trips in becoming wealthy he realized that
the only way he was going to break through the system that made it extremely hard to greatly improve one's well–being was through hard work and a
lucky break. So, because of his experience during his travels Wariuki made the choice to take advantage of the opportunity that presented itself and even
though it hurt those around him it was the only chance he had to achieve his dreams. Through his travels Wariuki came up with what he thought was
the only way he could make enough money to fulfill him and it although it changed him as a person it ultimately ended up working. However, his father
in laws influence cannot be forgotten from the picture, as the embarrassment Douglas Jones put Wariuki through seems to be the biggest contributor
towards Wariuki's life

Personal Narrative : My Middle School Experience In High...
Other's see the empty hallways, staircases, sport fields and classrooms as a time to replay the good times with their friends laughing, being stupid or
sometimes sadness. What I relive are the memories of my classmates laughing at my attire, crushes humiliating and degrading me or even using my
intelligence for their own personal gain. High school was like my middle school experience; just older and matured people who knew how to make
bullying unnoticeable. I felt like:
Ink forever stained my dark soul'
Constant brutal remarks
Piecing my Beatles, loveless organ
Like sharp knives
Like quenching words bleeding and burning
Such terms forever scorched my mind
Staring through transparent silver
A clear solid substance reflects me
Visible scars
Staring forth a cold
Soulless broken brown beauty
Hearing their whispers
Futile, hopeless
Vile
And undesired
Hearing this, your whispers
Urged me
Craved me
To find an exit
A challenge
A way out
To graduate...
These memories were like a never–ending loophole, but they were the causes of me graduating early. The difference between these individuals and
myself is that I don't direct my frustration and pain towards others. The difference is that I took this experience as motivation for a challenging path.
They caused me to feel insecure, out–casted, depressed, but because of that I accomplished something they couldn't or weren't willing to make
scarifies for. Such as a social life, partying, sports and friends. In high school, students aren't willing to sacrifice their relationships, jobs and electives
to be considerably self–directed, focused and consistently studying to graduate... well I did. Being self–directed forced me to take initiative and
develop the ability to reorganize myself as well control my life again. I had to recollect myself from doubts and insecurities. These things prevented
me from making friends, boyfriends or evening asking for help because I would fear being hurt or judged again. I used to believe the nasty insults
about my outer appearance was true "you're so ugly that no male will ever love, like nor want you," I used to stand in front of a mirror morning and
night crying by just hearing the incivilities. What made it worse was my first boyfriend

My Personal Experience : My Experience In My School
I frequently tell the same story to my friends when we go biking, so often that they know the same details as me. With the hundreds of memories I
carry with me, this is the one that is remembered with the most detail. This story is always told with eagerness as it shows a large part of how I was

a dread having to go there twice a week for an hour and a half, it might not seem like a lot now but at nine years old that seemed like forever. For
my class we would always go to gym class before lunch, as we walked down the freshly mopped hallway our teacher told us to be careful, I
remember thinking how much I wished to have an accident, because of my loathing for that class. Practically dragging my body, there I was in the
gym ready to be humiliated once again for failure to win my team some points. What I saw when I walked in was these perfectly organized bikes
with the helmets on its handles, that was the first time in my two years of being in that school that I had seen those bikes off their racks. The
coaches said something like "As you might've seen on your way to class the weather outside is beautiful, so we've decided to let you ride the bikes"
as if we hadn't had perfect weather before. The weather that day had been quite strange, I remember it being quite cold that morning, which was

Essay on Language = Personality?
Since English is essential in getting by in America, people are more likely to judge a person by his/her English mastery. If you speak English well
and fluently, you are quite respected. In other words, if you speak "Broken" English, they may subconsciously think of you as less intelligent than
people who speak Standard English. However, does a person's language mastery reflect complete personality? Since it has not been officially approved
that language reveals complete personality, it is inaccurate to judge a person by his/her language mastery. The dangers of linking one's worth to his/her

Since America is a multinational society, the link between languages to personality may also promote the loss of identity. An example is Amy
Tan, from her article "Mother Tongue". In the beginning of her life, Tan was always ashamed of her mother's "Broken" English. As an attempt to
get away from this side of her heritage, she becomes a great writer. She writes with great English and diction, and uses plenty of vocabulary.
However, she soon realizes that she is being someone she is not. Tan's story is a revelation of what the majority people think today that no one
wants to be misunderstood by their language mastery. Because of this thought, people are desperate to clear their accents, and try their best to speak
English perfectly, and more perfectly. Soon, there would be no other identities in America except Americans. If that is the case, it would be a great
loss to the country because no one would want to immigrate to a country that fulfilled with forced assimilation. For several times, I was being
discriminated against not only because of my English mastery but also my Chinese accent. The most embarrassing one took place at the first day of
my school. As a person of Chinese decent, I was extremely nervous while I had reached the admission office. After waited for nearly an hour in the

Public Humiliation
Public humiliation supposedly enforces people's behaviors to change but does shame really influence people to change? Most people have their
different opinions on public humiliation but either way Hester is a victim of this cruel well–known Puritan punishment. On the other hand, as a result
of Reverend Dimmesdale withholding his sin, a hard–hitting sickness secretly hits the reverend. The scarlet letter located on Hester's chest is a constant
reminder of her wrong decision. In the novel The Scarlet Letter, author Nathaniel Hawthorne expresses the effects of sin in many ways, including
public humiliation, Hester and the scarlet letter and Dimmesdale's sickness. Maria Stromberg, who wrote the article "Hawthorne's Black Man: Image

Public humiliation affects Hester and Dimmesdale in different ways but as an effect of their unpleasant acts they receive the same repercussions.
Hester seems okay with the effects of public humiliation providing she feels happy. Anyway Hester turns, people are watching her every move. Many
Puritan ladies use Hester as an example of what not do. "Thus the young and pure be taught to look at her, with the scarlet letter flaming on her breast,
–at her, the child of honorable parents, – at her, the mother of a babe, that would hereafter be a woman, –as the figure, the body, the reality of sin"
(Hawthorne 73). The author, Nathanial Hawthorne, states that the even though Hester sins once, from the town's perspective it still defines her and
everything she does. A few years pass before anyone sees the scarlet letter located on her bosom with a different meaning. Before the Puritans even
consider Hester's side of the story, they think and want greater punishments for her. "Where there is no pain there is no gain" seems to be their
philosophy. "'The magistrates are God–fearing gentlemen, but merciful overmuch, – that is a truth,' added a third autumnal matron. 'At the very least,
they should have put the brand of a hot iron on Hester Prynne's forehead. Madame Hester would have winced at that, I warrant me. But she,

That said, it was rather difficult to focus on planning her revenge when her backside was being brutalized, with hard slaps raining down on the tender

Public Humiliation Essay
When a person makes a mistake he usually does not want that mistake to be known. Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, public humiliation is
implemented on the main character, Hester Prynne. In Toni Locy's "Concerns raised on 'Scarlet Letter' for Drunk Drivers", the effectiveness of public
humiliation is both questioned and supported. As well as in Wray Herbert's "The Two Faces of Shame". Public humiliation causes a person to take
even more responsibility for his sins. Through the exposure of his mistakes he must realize he has done something wrong, accept the punishment, and
make the choice not to repeat his mistake. Public humiliation causes a person to be reminded of their wrongdoing because of the shame, guilt, and

They should have the opportunity to redeem themselves." The sternness of public humiliation is questioned when it comes to first–time offenders.
However, if the crime is serious enough public humiliation may be the right call. A townswoman says, "This woman has brought shame upon us all,
and ought to die" (Hawthorne 49). Others believe public humiliation is not stern enough. Public humiliation can be too serious for first–time offenders.
It can also be too lenient for people who has committed serious crimes. Hawthorne writes, "After her return to the prison, Hester Prynne was found to
be in a state of nervous excitement that demanded constant watchfulness, lest she should perpetrate violence on herself, or do some half–frenzied
mischief to the poor babe" (Hawthorne 67). When public humiliation is too hard on a person he may respond negatively. Prynne is having a mental
breakdown because of all the emotions she feels after her public shaming. Public humiliation is beneficial however, gauging the use of public
humiliation is difficult. Also, measuring a person's strength and whether he can handle public humiliation is difficult as well.
Contrary to the above opinion, public humiliation is still supported by many. Locy writes, [talking about Paul Cellucci] supported the Republican bill
that would stiffen penalties under current drunken–driving laws and lower the legal blood–alcohol level from .10 to .08." Public humiliation can be used

shaming can spread through many ways, such as the use of technology, online videos and certain websites. One reason why I believe that Public
Shaming is a big issue is because of the use of technology. Daniel Solove, a law professor that is mentioned in the essay, says, "Anybody can be a
celebrity or a worldwide villain" (Bennett 91). In today,'s society technology such as cell phones allow you to record incidents and upload them to
any social media. This is a form of public shaming because most of the time, people use technology to embarrass other people. People can use their
own cell phones to record others doing an act that might seem either malicious or embarrassing. Jessica Bennett uses "Dog Poop Girl" as an
example. In 2005, a girl had a public role of "Dog poop girl" after she refused to clean up after her dog on a subway. Jessica Bennett says, "A minor
infraction, perhaps, but another

Cyber Bullying : The Causes And Cons Of Cyberbullying
What is cyberbullying? Cyberbullying is an intentional form of technological posting, messaging, calling, or posting images used for harassment with
intent to humiliate, hurt, or embarrass a specific targeted human being by nature of threat. The perpetrator can make his or herself anonymous when
bullying or make themselves known to the public. Cyberbullies usually uses degrading words to offend the victim. They will oppress the victim by

but there have been many tragedies where people harm themselves. Some people are not able to cope with the negative comments and accusations

Social Amibition is the Stepping Stone to Humilliation in...
In William Shakespeare's romantic comedy of Twelfth Night, Malvolio's, Sebastian's and Sir Andrew's greed for power and status, mirror the theme
that being socially ambitious makes people an easy target for mockery and embarrassment. In the play, Malvolio desperately tries to win Olivia's
heart, falling under Maria's trap. Sebastian proves his shallow and ambiguous self when he agrees to wed a complete stranger for wealth, and Sir
Andrew vainly tries to prove his worth and nobleness to his fellow upper classmen, turning himself into a laughing stock. These three characters'
foolish actions create humor in the play as well as preach us that social ambition is the stepping stone for humiliation. Malvolio, head steward of
Olivia's household is an arrogant and proud man, who evokes distaste but also pity from the audience. Maria and company craft a masterful trap
into which Malvolio walks right into; they trick him into believing that the lady Olivia loves him and wishes him to prove his love for her through
a series of actions. Not only does he not doubt this for a second, but he eagerly agrees to fulfill all of the embarrassing things he has been set up to do:
"I do not now fool/ myself, to let my imagination jade me; for every reason/ excites to this, that my lady loves me" [5.2.153–155]. Malvolio's
declaration confirms that he is completely blinded by the thought of him being a count and imagining himself bossing servants around and being

Hazing Ethical Dilemmas
Ethical Dilemma(s) This case poses the ethical dilemma of hazing, a dilemma that can be found throughout sports teams on all levels in today's society.
Hazing, as defined by the Hazing Prohibition Act of 2003, is "any assumption of authority by a student whereby another student suffers or is exposed to
cruelty, intimidation, humiliation or embarrassment". Additionally, the term hazing describes rituals and other activities used as a way of initiating a
person into a group that involves performing excessive exercise, committing dangerous activities, or consuming offensive foods and alcohol. In many
circumstances, hazing is directed by team leaders, such as captains or seniors. Another ethical dilemma in this case is poor supervision by the ... Show

The verbal harassment took the form of name calling, such as referring to the first year players as "rookies" while requiring them to constantly
complete menial tasks. The first year players were then required to dress as clowns and take part in a scavenger hunt, which they were told was all a
part of tradition. If the rookies failed to complete the tasks they would be punished. In itself, the scavenger hunt and dressing up was humiliating but
not harmful however the threat of punishment clearly indicated some unethical activities would follow. The eventual duct taping of the girl's mouths
and placing them in the trunk of their cars crossed the line and could have led to injury. At this point, the "initiation" had become lability for the team
leaders, the team itself and the school. The rookies were then forced to consume large amounts of alcohol over a very short period of time followed by
stripping and dancing in front of the boy's basketball team. These unethical and dangerous activities could have had serious consequences. Drinking
alcohol in large quantities can lead to alcohol poisoning and other serious health issues such as blacking out and possible brain injuries. Additionally,
forcing the girls to strip brings in another unethical element, that of sexual abuse or sexual

Theme Of Belonging And Individuality In Sylvia Plath's...
Belonging and Individuality in Sylvia Plath's Initiation
There is no shortage of media encouraging adolescents to 'be themselves', promoting self–worth regardless as to what others think. And yet while many
may be fed this message throughout music and film, rarely ever is it conveyed to have a lasting effect on one's personal views quite like Initiation.
Sylvia Plath's short story follows the development of insecure and vulnerable Millicent Arnold, a girl who longs to be part of her high school sorority,
even if it means suffering through humiliation to do so. Although formulaic, Plath's uniquely optimistic short story warns against an obsession with
belonging and explores the importance of individuality through the protagonist's initial insecurities, the cruelty of the sorority girls, and the symbolism
of the heather birds.
In order to express the importance of the theme, the reader is introduced to Millicent's initial dependence on belonging as a result of her self–conscious
character. When she first learns of her invitation to the sorority, Millicent compares her situation to waiting outside a dance floor "looking in through
the windows at the golden interior ... wistfully watching ... couples waltzing to the never–ending music, laughing in pairs and groups together, no one
alone" (Plath 200). Millicent emphasizes that in her vision no dancer is left on their own, and that her desire to enter the sorority is driven, as Summer
Yasoni states in her essay, "not necessarily

Embarrassment and humility usually have a negative underlying tone towards the person who has experienced it. It makes the person feel awkward,
self–conscious and think "why me?" However, in my situation, while I did experience embarrassment that made me feel self–conscious and ashamed, it
made me more confident and open–minded. It all started one day, in my senior year of high school...
Friday. Last class of the day. I was ready to leave this dump people referred to as "school".
"Alright. Come on stage," Mr. Canzo said, forcing my lazy body off the cold, wooden chair and up the stairs to the front of the stage where everyone
sat holding little, white pieces of paper, each holding a mystery of words. My friends: Katherine, Shenez, Tenzin, and I sat together in the corner of the
circle away from the bright lights. I hid half my body behind the velvet curtain because I had a horrible thought of what we would be doing today, my
hand holding onto the white piece of paper tightly.
"Ok, I told you all yesterday to write the name of a random object in a random location. Now pass up those papers", Mr. Canzo proceeded. Everyone
began to pass up the papers and the nervousness started to crawl like a spider down my throat.
"I hate improvs", Tenzin sighed.
"Same", Shenez replied.
"I hate this class", I said recalling the reasons why I chose to stay in this class.
You'll be a better public speaker. You'll gain more confidence. It's a light class. Easy grades. This is the only class you have with Katherine beside Latin.
The last statement was true but the other reasons were too general and although I wanted to be more confident and a better public speaker, I felt this
was not the right way.
"Ok let's make 5 groups", Mr. Canzo said, dragging my thoughts back to the current situation I was in.
Katherine was placed in Group 1, Tenzin and Shenez in Group 4, and I was placed in Group 3. Sitting next to each other was a bad idea because we
were separated into different groups. Slowly the horrid exercise began. The "improvs" were actually students making up a story a sentence at a time by
connecting their sentence to that of the previous student's. The story or scene was completely random and had to relate to what was written on

Jerzy Kosinski's novel Being There is also an allegory for social humiliation. Chauncey Gardiner is uneducated, illiterate, and clueless about life
outside his garden. Being There satirizes media culture and celebrityhood, as people interpret Chauncey's blatant words as metaphoric and intelligent
reassurance of economic troubles. They believe he is refined and bright, and place him in positions of high power. The novel ridicules the shallowness
and superficiality of society today, especially regarding politics and the influential world of businessmen and women.
Humiliation in literature is also presented in terms of gender and male/ female relationships. The poem Goblin Market, by Christina Rossetti, can be
looked at as an allegory for gender humiliation. No male characters are depicted in the play, and only "maids could hear the goblins cry." This implies
that women face temptations and are able to be humiliated in ways that men are not aware of.
Laura purchases the goblin fruit with a lock of her hair–– by selling her body. This symbolizes prostitution, which was common during the Victorian
Era, the time Goblin Market was written. After Laura eats the goblin's fruits, she grows sick, unable to eat or move–– she is humiliated with her
actions and her desire for more fruit, which is an allegory for suppression of female

Colonialism And Slavery During The Times Of Slavery
During the times of slavery and post– slavery many blacks experienced self–hatred and were sexually repressed due to colonization. In the Kincaid
story "Girl" the mother has self–hatred due to colonialism and she wants to past the sexual repression of those who are colonized down to her
daughter. Colonialism is a main reason for sexual repression and self–hatred, the sexual repression of the colonized is being passed down through
generations, and also the humiliation from others that is experienced leads to self–hatred of those not yet colonized; which eventually leads to them
becoming colonized. Colonialism is the reason for sexual repression and self–hatred. A colonization consist of Whites who constantly objectified and
exploited those of color. A prime example of this would beslavery, where blacks were treated as property and not human beings. Due to harsh
treatments and being called derogative names, many black began self–hating themselves and believed that the way they were being treated and what
they were taught was right. Many whites used avenues that they knew would help them be able to control the slaves, such as Religion. "Religion was
and is a powerful tool for controlling slaves and slave wage workers" (Waller, Lecture Two). Many slaves were very religious and followed the
practices of Christianity, which is what lead to many becoming sexually repressed. "Christianity taught women to repress themselves, conform to the
culture, and to severely discipline

The second humiliating experience was after the battle royal match. Money is lying on an electrified carpet, "I lunged for a yellow coin lying on the

Torture: No Place For It In Society?
Torture. No Place for it in Society? In today's world, there is an overwhelming call for drastic measures in response to issues involving national security
and terrorism. For these reasons, acts of torture are often considered a potential and partial resolution to the ideological conflict between western life
and extremism in the middle east. This mode of thinking follows the logic that torture is an effective means of gaining vital information for our
security. This logic however is flawed and misinformed. All acts of torture are simply unwarranted in that they have no legitimate justification behind
them. In fact, the use of torture is perhaps one of the most ineffective and immoral means of gathering intelligence, in that it yields factually
undeterminable information, has overwhelming costs and impacts, and is inhumane in its means of execution. According to the UN's "Convention

William Shakespeare 's ' Macbeth ' And ' Wuthering Heights '

Destructive Love In Macbeth and Wuthering Heights The theme of destructive love within relationships in Shakespeare's Macbeth and Bronte's
Wuthering Heights are presented through sexism, jealousy, and betrayal. How do women gain control in a relationship? Can men regain control in a
relationship? What makes a good relationship? What makes a bad relationship? Can people be over ambitious? These questions are vital to
understanding the complex relationships in these stories. Women gain control in a relationship in several ways. Some relationships don't struggle for
power, and sometimes a participant simply gives the woman power freely. However, other times, the woman abuses her partner... Show more content

In Macbeth, Macbeth becomes king. When this happens, Lady Macbeth becomes docile, where before she was fiery, ruthless, and the driving force in
the relationship. Macbeth then became dominant over Lady Macbeth, gaining control in the relationship. Thus, in this example, control was regained. In
Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff eventually came to own Wuthering Heights, and appropriated Thrushcross Grange. When this happened, he was angry
with Catherine, because he did not know her plan. He isolated her from the rest of the household. He became more powerful. Thus, he regained control
in the relationship.
What makes a good relationship? This question has plagued the romantically inclined for perhaps all of time. Dr. Sarkis of Psychology Today seems to
think that common goals and values are key, stating "Couples with very different interests can have healthy relationships – what counts is that they
share common goals and values." (psychologytoday.com.) In this sense, the relationship in Macbeth is considered a "good" relationship. Macbeth and
Lady Macbeth do, after all, share a common goal: They both want Macbeth to be king. However, they are not the only ones who share a common goal
or value.
Heathcliff and Catherine's love is "an attempt to break the boundaries of self and to fuse with another to transcend the inherent separateness of the
human condition; fusion with another will by uniting two incomplete individuals

Public Humiliation As A Deterrent Against Future Crimes
Public humiliation can be extremely effective and valuable for improvement in discipline and serves as a deterrent against future crimes. Public
shaming has been employed since the beginning of time and is practiced worldwide. Throughout history, the advantage of the practice of public
humiliation was exploited by early civilization for the prime and propitious results. In Ancient Rome, public humiliation was frequently utilized
during crucifixion, when a person was killed for a sin. Crucifixion was as defined by Dr. Dan Hayden, "the most humiliating and degrading form of
public death ever devised." (Hayden, "Hung On a Tree"). The method of crucifixion was not only shameful for the one being punished but also was
as an incentive for the public. It served as a reminder to avoid committing a sin. In the Middle East, nations such as Iran and Afghanistan,
"authorities... amputated the hands of a convicted thief in front of other prisoners..."(Associated Press, "Iran Cuts Off Man's Hand For Stealing"). The
purpose of this form of public humiliation serves similar to the motives of the crucifixion. These are just two of the countless historical records that
assert the usage of public humiliation for stabilization within the society. It was constantly used in the former times and is still used in the modern era.
The effectiveness of this form of discipline was and is still witnessed by numerous individuals. The form of discipline portrayed by public humiliation

Analysis Of Mother Tongue By Amy Tan
What does it feel like to be raised in an immigrant family? In the essay "Mother tongue" by Amy Tan, the author describes how her mother's English
influences her in her career and life that the "mother tongue" does not limit her as a writer, but shaped her and her perception on life instead. And her
attitude to her mother's English changes from the initial embarrassment to the final appreciation. Tan's attitude towards her mother's English begins
with embarrassment and humiliation. Growing up in an immigrant family which speaks imperfect English, Tan witnesses many discriminations that
her mother has encountered in department stores or at banks, those experiences help to shape Tan's opinion to her mother's English. For example,
Tan states that "[she] was ashamed of [her mother's] English. [She] believed that [her mother's] English reflected the quality of what [her] mother
had to say" (508). In young Amy's opinion, her mother's expressions and thoughts are broken and imperfect like the way she speaks, and she
believes that linguistic expression is linked to a person's intelligence. As a result, she was ashamed of her mother in public because of her fractured
English. Besides, Tan recalls another incident of her pretending to be her mother to talk to a stockbroker. Tan's mother was using broken English to
give Tan instructions on how to talk on the phone. She describes that her mother said, "' So mad he lied to me, losing me money'" ( Tan 508). The

Lord Of The Flies Identity Analysis
How concealing one's identity can provide strength William Golding's Lord of the Flies takes place during a war, and follows a group of
unsupervised British school boys who crash land on an island due to the war. Jack is able to hide his true self behind a mask which allows him to
act out on his savage tendencies; however, Piggy never hides his true self causing the other boys to see Piggy as someone who should not be
taken seriously. Through the humiliations suffered by Jack and Piggy, Golding shows that when the boys conceal their identity, they act without
repercussions which proves that mankind has a weak state of mind. Jack is able to become a powerful figure on the island through the
fearlessness and intimidation that embodies him when he hides his face behind a painted mask. When Jack is not hiding his true identity, he feels
a great deal of embarrassment evident through his actions, and shows exactly how vulnerable he is when he flees the group crying: "His voice
trailed off. The hands that held the conch shook... The humiliating tears were running from the corner of each eye" (Golding 127). Jack was not
able to face rejection to the point of abandoning everyone else on the island. Golding showed how vulnerable Jack is through his word choice. Not
only had Jack's voice trailed off, but Jack began to cry all while his body shook. Later on Jack has his face covered, and this grants him confidence:

Jack's Weakness The Lord of the Flies is a gruesome story about young boys stranded on an island, who underwent a transformation from polite

that had once been simply part of his disguise, seems to have become a part of him. And it seems to be something that Jack enjoys too much,
somewhat like a psychopath. "Robert was screaming and struggling with the strength of frenzy. Jack had him by the hair and was brandishing his

where he can act as a complete tyrant and have unlimited power, and by doing so, escape his fear of being publicly embarrassed, ashamed and

Public Shaming As A Punishment

  • 1. Public Shaming As A Punishment The idea of public shaming as a punishment is an idea that goes back centuries in history. In modern times the setting of public shaming has shifted from outside in public to inside on the internet. People are attacked and publically shamed for all to see through social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and much more. The idea of media shaming is an important idea to consider and to question about the effects that it has on a person's life. People should care about the issue because it can happen to anyone, at anytime, from just one simple mistake. The idea of public shaming through the internet is not an acceptable form of punishment in modern society because it can cause deep and long lasting psychological damage, cause people to lose their jobs, and allows the perpetrators to hide behind a screen and remain unidentified. One of the major reasons why public shaming is not an acceptable form of punishment in today's society is because it can cause deep and long lasting psychological damage. Usually after someone has received their punishment they can move on with their lives but when someone is humiliated they get psychological damage with effects that can stay with them for the rest of their lives. In the article "Hide and Seek," Neel Burton says that, " Humiliation is traumatic and often hushed up, whereas embarrassment, given enough time, can be sublimed into a humorous anecdote." What Neel is really saying here is that although someone can be embarrassed, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Humiliation In The Middle School The focal issue addressed in "The Under– Appreciated Role of The Humiliation in the Middle School" is humiliation. According to this article, a well–built feeling of embarrassment is what humiliation is referred to. Humiliation is an extremely considerable issue as it leads to an increase of emotions that dispossess a person's self–esteem. Two references contained in this article are ERIC database documentation and Friedman (2005). ERIC is an internet based digital library ofeducation research and information that is sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences of the U. S. Department of Education. • 3. The Grand Impact Of Public Bullying By Cyberbullying The grand impact of public humiliation brought on by cyberbullying, and those using this for a financial gain. With just one click someone's personal reputation can be shattered instantaneously. For some people the public humiliation had been unbearable, and tragically take the lives. Lewinsky believes we need a shift to a long held value of compassion and empathy that we now lack. I agree with this argument. For the first time cyberbullying is leading to suicidal ideations. The invasion of others privacy has emerged a marketplace for public humiliation. The responsibilities that come with our freedom of expression. I will now discuss my evidence. For the first time cyberbullying has led to suicidal ideations as a meta–analysis done out of the Netherlands shows sadly more than offline bullying. Lewinsky stated "Cruelty to others is nothing new, but online, technologically enhanced shaming is amplified, uncontained, and permanently accessible." What Lewinsky is stating with this that we have always had public humiliation however not to the degree that we do now with social media. Things would happen and it would be shameful, however once people forgot about it that was the end of it. Now with social media scandals take on a whole new prospective, and unfortunately it is not always in a positive way. A complete stranger can have access to this information, and can escalate a simple misunderstanding. It is easy to type in a cruel comment and not have to see the pain and ... • 4. Analysis Of Mother Tongue By Amy Tan Language as a combination of single words and different ideas affects us everyday in life. In the essay "Mother tongue" by Amy Tan, the author describes how her mother's English influences her in her career and life that the "mother tongue" does not limit her as a writer, but shaped her and her perception on life instead. And her attitude to her mother's English changes from the initial embarrassment to the final appreciation. Tan's attitude towards her mother's English begins with embarrassment and humiliation. Growing up in an immigrant family which speaks imperfect English, Tan witnesses many discriminations that her mother has encountered in department stores or at banks, those experiences help to shape Tan's opinion to her mother's English. For example, Tan states that "[she] was ashamed of [her mother's] English. [She] believed that [her mother's] English reflected the quality of what [her] mother had to say" (508). In young Amy's opinion, her mother's expressions and thoughts are broken and imperfect like the way she speaks, and she believes that linguistic expression is linked to a person's intelligence. As a result, she was ashamed of her mother in public because of her fractured English. Besides, Tan recalls another incident of her pretending to be her mother to communicate to a stockbroker. Tan's mother was using broken English to give Tan instructions on how to talk on the phone. She describes that her mother said, "' So mad he lied to me, losing me money'" ( Tan 508). The author uses dialogues as evidence to show the audience the way her mother speaks English: influent and fractured. Tan has to help her mother to communicate with people only as a teenager due to her mother's poor English skills. Tan informs the audience that she was " sitting there red–faced and quiet" (508) when she and her mother finally met the stockbroker in person. She uses the word "astonished" to describe the stockbroker when he found the truth that the author wasn't the real Mrs. Tan. Young Amy was apparently embarrassed when she was forced to speak as an adult to the stockbroker and deal with different problems beyond her age, and she develops a negative impression on the mother's tongue. Even though the author ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Bullying Is The Intentional Harm Doing Or Harrasement What is bullying? It is the intentional harm–doing or harrasement directed to vulnerable people and is repeated quite often. Bullying can be done in multiple ways. Some examples are: physical violence, verbal talk and/or threats and rumors being spread either verbally or online. Bullying can happen to anyone, but mostly involves kids. There are ways to try and stop it and everyone should help in getting that rate down. ("Bullying .–Britannica") This isn't something that is to be taken lightly but many people do, and it stays an issue in many places, especially at schools. A U.S. national study done at the beginning of the 21st century stated 30 percent of kids, middle to high school, experienced bullying during their school years. Research shows that it tends to start during early teen years and decreases in their later teen years, and it is showed to be done mostly by boys. It can start from reactions to struggles and from power within a group. (Bullying–Britannica) It can also be done by kids who feel like having the power or from those who come from homes where the adults fight or hurt each other. When girl's bully, they tend to do it in emotional ways, such as excluding a certain girl or gossiping about her (Bullying– Topic overview). Bullying doesn't just apply to high school kids, but adults are also experiencing it at work and by definition it is worse at work than in school. In the workplace, bullying often involves a person in power, such as a manager or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Waiting For The Barbarians Analysis Coetzee writes Waiting for the Barbarians through the point of view of the Magistrate of an unnamed Empire. The Empire resembles a colonialist regime that views itself as both superior to and in opposition with the neighboring "barbarians." At first, the Magistrate is largely oblivious to the violence and torture carried out by officers of the Empire, believing that Colonel Joll "finds out the truth" about the barbarians (4). The Magistrate treats the line between truth and falsehood as clear and absolute, something that can be thoroughly investigated and uncovered. However, his view changes when he hears Colonel Joll describe that "first [he] get[s] lies, you see–– this is what happens–– first lies, then pressure, then more lies, then more pressure, then the break, then more pressure, then the truth. That is how you get the truth" (6). While the Magistrate initially believes in Joll's work, it quickly becomes apparent that Colonel Joll is interested in a specific version of the truth. He treats the barbarian subjects as objects and uses them as a means to an end, with the belief that truth is reached through the application of the greatest possible pain. After extreme torture, the barbarians become willing to admit to Joll whatever he designates as the truth and reaffirm his hypotheses. The power dynamic between the officers of the Empire and the barbarians renders this method of discovery both immoral and inaccurate. The novel centers around the relationship between the ... • 7. Describe The Effects Of Humiliation In Society A woman outcasted for her sin in a puritan society. A woman ridiculed for what actions she took with a high ranking official. A woman threatened for what controversy she said. All of the following people have been exposed to some form of public humiliation, public humiliation has long been outlived from its more primitive origin. However, the act of public shaming has evolved along with our technology to deepen the pain on the victim. However the areas of their lives that are affected have stayed the same and rather just the way of shaming the victim has changed The following texts describe the effect of humiliation on a person, The Scarlet Letter By Nathaniel Hawthorne, "The Price of Shame" by Monica Lewinsky, and "Is the Internet a Mob Without Consequence?" by Nick Bolton. Public humiliation has always affected the culprit's personal, social, and personal lives. The impact of humiliation on someone's social, professional lives is that the humiliated person will be an outcast in society, humiliation will ruin their chances of attaining some type of profession and humiliation will distance themselves from the people in their personal lives The impact of humiliation on someone's social life is that they will become an outcast in society. This is because the people in society will be so disgusted at what acts the culprit did that the people will start to diverge away from this person. • 8. The Importance Of School Dress Codes Shoulders...knee caps...bra straps...collarbones...all scary, right? No? Well, if they aren't scaring you then they are glowing, right? No? If they aren't scary or glowing then why are they so distracting? Emily Lindon writes about how school dress codes are sexist in her article "Why Sexist Dress Codes Suck for Everyone." I don't believe that schools should make students feel uncomfortable with their bodies; I don't believe that schools should make female students feel inferior to male students; I don't believe schools should humiliate students for their clothing choices. I believe that dress codes are sexist. A lot of people don't feel comfortable in their skin; they don't like the way they look; they are extremely self–conscious. If a school's dress code limits what a student can wear it can make them feel even less confident. Emily says, "dress codes are also unfair to the students whose clothing they don't regulate, the students whose bodies aren't seen as inherently 'offensive' or 'inappropriate'..." emphasizing that dress codes aren't enforced equally. Different people have different body types; some people are tall and thin, short and chubby, tall and chubby, short and thin, flat chested or big busted, small waisted or larger waisted, and more. If their clothes fit them and they are dress coded than this could attack their confidence level and make them feel uncomfortable with their bodies. Girls are dress coded on everything: shoulders showing, bra strap showing, shorts ride ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Today judges sometimes use public humiliation instead of traditional punishments, like jail time or community service, to punish criminals. This can be seen in the short story Wedding at the Cross by Ngugi wa Thiong'o where traveling greatly influences the main character Wariuki's outlook of the world. Wariuki starts off as being a very poor but very happy man until he gets humiliated by his father in law, Douglas Jones, for not being wealthy enough to pay for a wedding at a church or provide for his wife. This ignites a fire in Wariuki to prove his Douglas Jones wrong and he goes to great lengths to accumulate enough wealth to become higher class and not be looked down upon. Wariuki's choice shows a change in moral conviction that can is linked to acquisition of wealth which was Wariuki's life motivation. His travels throughout the world made him realize that being the "good guy" would not get him far in becoming wealthy and proving his father in law wrong. As Wariuki realized how the world worked with his many unsuccessful trips in becoming wealthy he realized that the only way he was going to break through the system that made it extremely hard to greatly improve one's well–being was through hard work and a lucky break. So, because of his experience during his travels Wariuki made the choice to take advantage of the opportunity that presented itself and even though it hurt those around him it was the only chance he had to achieve his dreams. Through his travels Wariuki came up with what he thought was the only way he could make enough money to fulfill him and it although it changed him as a person it ultimately ended up working. With the hundreds of memories I carry with me, this is the one that is remembered with the most detail. This story is always told with eagerness as it shows a large part of how I was as a kid. What I saw when I walked in was these perfectly organized bikes with the helmets on its handles, that was the first time in my two years of being in that school that I had seen those bikes off their racks. However, if the crime is serious enough public humiliation may be the right call. A townswoman says, "This woman has brought shame upon us all, and ought to die" (Hawthorne 49). Others believe public humiliation is not stern enough. Public humiliation can be too serious for first–time offenders. It can also be too lenient for people who has committed serious crimes. Hawthorne writes, "After her return to the prison, Hester Prynne was found to be in a state of nervous excitement that demanded constant watchfulness, lest she should perpetrate violence on herself, or do some half–frenzied mischief to the poor babe" (Hawthorne 67). She starts the essay by using "Star Boy" as an example. She then states, "Among the generation that's been reared online, stories like this are becoming more common" (Bennett 90). As a person who uses technology in everyday life, I can strongly agree that public shaming is becoming a big issue. Some people might see it as entertainment, but the victims of public shaming see it as humiliation and harassment. Public shaming can spread through many ways, such as the use of technology, online videos and certain websites. One reason why I believe that Public Shaming is a big issue is because of the use of technology. Daniel Solove, a law professor that is mentioned in the essay, says, "Anybody can be a celebrity or a worldwide villain" (Bennett 91). In today,'s society technology such as cell phones allow you to record incidents and upload them to any social media. This is a form of public shaming because most of the time, people use technology to embarrass other people. People can use their own cell phones to record others doing an act that might seem either malicious or embarrassing. Jessica Bennett uses "Dog Poop Girl" as an example. In William Shakespeare's romantic comedy of Twelfth Night, Malvolio's, Sebastian's and Sir Andrew's greed for power and status, mirror the theme that being socially ambitious makes people an easy target for mockery and embarrassment. In the play, Malvolio desperately tries to win Olivia's heart, falling under Maria's trap. Sebastian proves his shallow and ambiguous self when he agrees to wed a complete stranger for wealth, and Sir Andrew vainly tries to prove his worth and nobleness to his fellow upper classmen, turning himself into a laughing stock. These three characters' foolish actions create humor in the play as well as preach us that social ambition is the stepping stone for humiliation. Malvolio, head steward of Olivia's household is an arrogant and proud man, who evokes distaste but also pity from the audience. Maria and company craft a masterful trap into which Malvolio walks right into; they trick him into believing that the lady Olivia loves him and wishes him to prove his love for her through a series of actions. Belonging and Individuality in Sylvia Plath's Initiation There is no shortage of media encouraging adolescents to 'be themselves', promoting self–worth regardless as to what others think. And yet while many may be fed this message throughout music and film, rarely ever is it conveyed to have a lasting effect on one's personal views quite like Initiation. Sylvia Plath's short story follows the development of insecure and vulnerable Millicent Arnold, a girl who longs to be part of her high school sorority, even if it means suffering through humiliation to do so. Although formulaic, Plath's uniquely optimistic short story warns against an obsession with belonging and explores the importance of individuality through the protagonist's initial insecurities, the cruelty of the sorority girls, and the symbolism of the heather birds. In order to express the importance of the theme, the reader is introduced to Millicent's initial dependence on belonging as a result of her self–conscious character. When she first learns of her invitation to the sorority, Millicent compares her situation to waiting outside a dance floor "looking in through the windows at the golden interior ... wistfully watching ... couples waltzing to the never–ending music, laughing in pairs and groups together, no one alone" (Plath 200). • 33. Torture: No Place For It In Society? Torture. No Place for it in Society? In today's world, there is an overwhelming call for drastic measures in response to issues involving national security and terrorism. For these reasons, acts of torture are often considered a potential and partial resolution to the ideological conflict between western life and extremism in the middle east. This mode of thinking follows the logic that torture is an effective means of gaining vital information for our security. This logic however is flawed and misinformed. All acts of torture are simply unwarranted in that they have no legitimate justification behind them. In fact, the use of torture is perhaps one of the most ineffective and immoral means of gathering intelligence, in that it yields factually undeterminable information, has overwhelming costs and impacts, and is inhumane in its means of execution. According to the UN's "Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment" torture is defined as "any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as... In places such as Abu Ghraib, prisoners were forced to endure sexual humiliation, physical harm, starvation, exceedingly large amounts of stress, and even mental manipulation. Institutions use tactics such as "moral disengagement" to support the use of torture. With a mindset revolved around the idea of "otherness" , one is able to justify any act of horrific violence on any scale. (Costanzo & Gerrity, 2009) It was precisely this idea of moral disengagement that drives ethnic conflict between groups of people. • 34. William Shakespeare 's ' Macbeth ' And ' Wuthering Heights ' Andrew Sloop Mrs. Weaver English 4 May 29, 2017 Destructive Love In Macbeth and Wuthering Heights The theme of destructive love within relationships in Shakespeare's Macbeth and Bronte's Wuthering Heights are presented through sexism, jealousy, and betrayal. How do women gain control in a relationship? Can men regain control in a relationship? What makes a good relationship? What makes a bad relationship? Can people be over ambitious? These questions are vital to understanding the complex relationships in these stories. Women gain control in a relationship in several ways. Some relationships don't struggle for power, and sometimes a participant simply gives the woman power freely. However, other times, the woman abuses her partner... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Macbeth, Macbeth becomes king. When this happens, Lady Macbeth becomes docile, where before she was fiery, ruthless, and the driving force in the relationship. Macbeth then became dominant over Lady Macbeth, gaining control in the relationship. Thus, in this example, control was regained. In Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff eventually came to own Wuthering Heights, and appropriated Thrushcross Grange. When this happened, he was angry with Catherine, because he did not know her plan. He isolated her from the rest of the household. He became more powerful. Thus, he regained control in the relationship. What makes a good relationship? This question has plagued the romantically inclined for perhaps all of time. Dr. Sarkis of Psychology Today seems to think that common goals and values are key, stating "Couples with very different interests can have healthy relationships – what counts is that they share common goals and values." (psychologytoday.com.) In this sense, the relationship in Macbeth is considered a "good" relationship. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth do, after all, share a common goal: They both want Macbeth to be king. However, they are not the only ones who share a common goal or value. • 35. Public Humiliation As A Deterrent Against Future Crimes Public humiliation can be extremely effective and valuable for improvement in discipline and serves as a deterrent against future crimes. Public shaming has been employed since the beginning of time and is practiced worldwide. Throughout history, the advantage of the practice of public humiliation was exploited by early civilization for the prime and propitious results. In Ancient Rome, public humiliation was frequently utilized during crucifixion, when a person was killed for a sin. Crucifixion was as defined by Dr. Dan Hayden, "the most humiliating and degrading form of public death ever devised." (Hayden, "Hung On a Tree"). The method of crucifixion was not only shameful for the one being punished but also was as an incentive for the public. It served as a reminder to avoid committing a sin. In the Middle East, nations such as Iran and Afghanistan, "authorities... amputated the hands of a convicted thief in front of other prisoners..."(Associated Press, "Iran Cuts Off Man's Hand For Stealing"). The purpose of this form of public humiliation serves similar to the motives of the crucifixion. These are just two of the countless historical records that assert the usage of public humiliation for stabilization within the society. It was constantly used in the former times and is still used in the modern era. The effectiveness of this form of discipline was and is still witnessed by numerous individuals. • 36. Personal Narrative : Personal Essay Growing up, every time I stood in front of a crowd, my heart would start pounding, louder than a gong in a yoga class, and my leg would not stop shaking to the point where it would appear as it was having a seizure. "There's nothing to be scared about", my parents would assure me as I continued to search for my ice pick in case I froze up on stage. Despite endless deep breaths and attempting to imagine the crowd in their underwear, my mind and body could not fight the terror of potential public humiliation. Now, this wasn't just any other "Oh no! It's 7 feet tall and hairy, I'm scared of Bigfoot!" kind of fear, though running into Bigfoot in the middle of the street would be quite alarming. This fear was the kind that made your entire body cringe, like when you think of nails on a chalkboard. Regardless of what I was doing– performing a dance, talking about my favourite fruit, or simply just standing– if there was an audience, my anxiety grew to the size of an elephant. And believe me, there was nothing in the world I wanted more than to stand in front of a crowd and be confident. However, that doesn't change overnight. Think of it this way, this concern of mine was like cleaning your room; everyone wants the end result of a spotless room, or in my case to overcome public humiliation, yet people always push it off for later. You could say I was an expert at procrastination, having not cleaned my room for months as well as avoided any situation that could possibly lead to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Analysis Of Mother Tongue By Amy Tan What does it feel like to be raised in an immigrant family? Besides, Tan recalls another incident of her pretending to be her mother to talk to a stockbroker. Tan's mother was using broken English to give Tan instructions on how to talk on the phone. She describes that her mother said, "' So mad he lied to me, losing me money'" ( Tan 508). • 38. Lord Of The Flies Identity Analysis How concealing one's identity can provide strength William Golding's Lord of the Flies takes place during a war, and follows a group of unsupervised British school boys who crash land on an island due to the war. Jack is able to hide his true self behind a mask which allows him to act out on his savage tendencies; however, Piggy never hides his true self causing the other boys to see Piggy as someone who should not be taken seriously. Through the humiliations suffered by Jack and Piggy, Golding shows that when the boys conceal their identity, they act without repercussions which proves that mankind has a weak state of mind. Jack is able to become a powerful figure on the island through the fearlessness and intimidation that embodies him when he hides his face behind a painted mask. When Jack is not hiding his true identity, he feels a great deal of embarrassment evident through his actions, and shows exactly how vulnerable he is when he flees the group crying: "His voice trailed off. The hands that held the conch shook... The humiliating tears were running from the corner of each eye" (Golding 127). Jack was not able to face rejection to the point of abandoning everyone else on the island. Golding showed how vulnerable Jack is through his word choice. Not only had Jack's voice trailed off, but Jack began to cry all while his body shook. Later on Jack has his face covered, and this grants him confidence: "He paused and looked round. Jack's violence that had once been simply part of his disguise, seems to have become a part of him. And it seems to be something that Jack enjoys too much, somewhat like a psychopath. "Robert was screaming and struggling with the strength of frenzy. Jack had him by the hair and was brandishing his knife." "Then Jack found the throat and the hot blood spouted over his hands." Jack's original plan of creating a new personality for himself seems to have gone to his head. And the psychopath within him has come alive. Once he understands his situation upon the island Jack sees it as a fresh start where he can act as a complete tyrant and have unlimited power, and by doing so, escape his fear of being publicly embarrassed, ashamed and humiliated by other children. But his "temporary" personality change seems to have completely changed him into the blood–thirsty savage that he has become.
