2. My Brief…
The brief that I have chosen is to create the first two
pages of a local newspaper along side the following
ancillary tasks:
• Hyperlinked pages of a website
• A poster for the newspaper
3. Conventions…
Must of the conventions I will use within my product will be kept
•
similar to the sorts of conventions used in existing products. For
example, the positioning of the main article will be in the centre of the
front page and will be accompanied by a relating headline and image
often with a caption. This highlight the importance and significance of
the article. In the case of the Sunderland Echo it is always a human
interest story or a piece of local news which is used as the main
article as it keeps the audience interested and also some members
may be able to relate to the issue. I will aim to keep this the same in
my newspaper.
4. More Conventions…
• Other conventions which I will keep the same will be he positioning of
the masthead and the essential information etc. This is because the
masthead is traditionally positioned at the very top of the page so
people can easily see what newspaper it is, so I would not change
this. Also within the essential information banner the price will be
featured, therefore below the masthead would be a suitable place for
this feature to go.
5. More Conventions…
• Like other traditional local newspapers my product will feature a
different adverts for a range of different places and things. This will
help to draw the reader into reading on. The positioning on an eye-
catching advert will be at the very bottom of the page reading along
horizontally in the form of a banner. As this is the last feature that the
reader is likely to look at on the page, they my be more likely to turn
to that specific page which more information of the advert will be
featured on.
6. Target Audience…
• The target audience for my product will mostly like be an older
generation perhaps around the age of 30-40. This is based upon the
types of stories that will be featured within the newspaper as
someone in their teens is most likely not going to pay as much
interest in human interest stories etc as this generation would. As well
as thinking about gender, my product will be aimed at a working class
audience. This is due to the style of the language which I will use and
again the style of story. The language will be fairy informal however at
the same time relevant and to the point. I will base the style and
layout of my newspaper around that of the Sunderland Echo due to
them both being local evening newspapers.
7. Distribution…
• By newspaper will be distributed in local shop as well as
supermarkets, online and through subscription. This helps me to
create a broader target audience. The fact that my product is also
distributed online, a younger audience may be targeted. This is
because it is usually the younger audiences which are more familiar
and experienced with computers and the internet, therefore it may
encourage them to keep up-to-date on the latest news whilst doing
something they enjoy. Also my product will be available to buy
through subscription. Readers will pay so much money a month for
the newspaper over a period of time and the newspaper will be
continuously sent to them on a regular basis. This means that the
audience does not have the hassle of going out to buy the local paper
everyday as they can get it delivered straight to their doors.
8. Publishing…
• The company I would choice to
publisher may product is
Northeast Press. This is because
they already publisher the
Sunderland Echo and the Shields
Gazette which are popular local
existing newspaper. However this
may prove to be a seen as a bad
thing as because they already
publish two similar newspapers
they might make my product to
similar to the existing papers as
well as putting for effort into the
existing two.
