Hiring great people is especially critical for high-growth businesses Hiring grads can be a great cost-effective way to bring fresh talent in to a business However: They lack basic business skills e.g. writing business emails, organising events, running meetings, presenting etc They have unrealistic expectations: about the work they will be doing and the support they will receive – feel they are owed something by their employers Poor self-awareness slows down their development because they do not know what they are doing wrong and find it difficult to improve on their weakness and make the most of their strengths. This makes hiring the right person more difficult Therefore: The fact they don’t immediately add value means that companies often go for more experienced hires rather than graduates, when in the long-run paying to train a graduate is more cost-effective – higher salary for an experienced hire over several years, they will have picked-up bad habits elsewhere (not a blank canvas) and often won’t be as committed to the company or motivated as a graduate
