This chapter discusses how English became one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. It explains that England explored and colonized lands in America, the Caribbean, Australia, India, and Africa between the 15th-19th centuries, establishing British rule and spreading the use of English. While the British Empire declined in the late 19th century as it gave independence to its colonies due to financial difficulties, English continued to be used and was left behind as a common language across these former territories.
