3. What is Impressionism?
When and Why did it start?
• Impressionism is an art
movement that
originated in France in
the 1860s and was
popular until the 1880s.
• Artists were rebelling
against traditional
academic art.
4. What were artists trying to achieve?
19th century camera
• Artists were responding to
the invention of the
camera.
• They wanted to capture
the moment in a way that
a camera could not.
• How does the artist
achieve that in this image?
5. Characteristics
•
Artists of this time were
very interested in the
strong lighting and heavy
color!
•
They Applied paint in a
dabbing method using
rapid small brush strokes.
•
The brush strokes often
created a atmospheric
flickering light effect like
in these paintings.
6. Color Techniques
• Colors are applied sideby-side with little
blending: creating a
vibrant colored surface.
• Our eyes naturally blends
the colors as the viewer.
• Grays and dark tones are
produced by mixing
complementary colors
such as mixing
blue/orange/purple.
• Impressionists avoid the
use of black paint.
7. Landscapes
• Impressionists
sometimes painted
landscapes which are
visible features of the
land. ( such as
mountains, sky, grass,
buildings, etc.)
• The act of painting
outside was referred to
as painting En plein air .
Which is French for “in
the open air”
8. Artists paid attention to!
Artists paid attention to
what was going on in
the foreground (front of
image) and background
( back of image).
Landscapes often
depicted a horizon line
which was a line
dividing the earth from
the sky.

9. Famous Impressionists:
Edgar Degas
• Edgar Degas – famous
for painting pictures of
ballet dancers.
• Unlike many of the
other Impressionist
artists, he would
sketch the scenery and
people in person and
paint them later in his
studio.
10. Claude Monet
• Claude Monet is known
the founder or creator of
impressionism.
• Monet painted many
series of objects in
different lighting.
• His painting on the right:
Impression: Sunrise gave
birth to the name
Impressionism.

impressionist painting! Instructions
• You will capture any
moment you would like in
your painting!
• You have 3 options:
1. You can bring a picture from
home or pull one out of
magazine (national
geographic magazines
provided)
2. Paint from memory or
imagination
3. En Plein Air method by
Looking out the window or
painting something in the
room (such as a friend
working).
• You will be sharing you work with
the class:
• Explaining the moment you
captured and where you applied a
dabbing method.
• Be sure to say at least one thing
about a classmates work!
