Astraphobia Definition
Astraphobia
Sirens blaring the flash of lightning then the colossal clap of thunder. Many people think that storms are amazing and beautiful, but some think
storms are the worst thing on the planet. These people who hate storms have a phobia called astraphobia. This phobia is also very common in
children and if you have this phobia, don't feel ashamed, an astonishing 2.1% of people on this planet have astraphobia. Astraphobia is nothing to
be ashamed of and many people suffer from this phobia.
Like many phobias, this is caused by a traumatic experience or event. For example, if someone was struck by lightning, they would be afraid to go
somewhere if it is raining or storming outside. People who are 'high strung' or 'nervous' about

Rainforest Depletion: Adverse Effects on the Environment
Introduction The depletion of tropical rainforests by third world countries, as well as by American industry, has been a growing area of concern for
many environmental organizations. Animal rights activists are livid at the frightening rate in which species are becoming extinct in these regions.
Conservationists argue that the foliage is disappearing at rates that replanting programs will never be able to compete with. Environmentalists and
Meteorologists fear that the elimination of enormous quantities of acreage will result in a long list of problems, including global warming,
abnormal precipitation patterns, and unpredictable weather systems, just to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Depletion: Rates and Reasons Rainforest are being depleted at alarming rates for a number of reasons. A number of raw materials can be obtained
from these regions, including oil, rubber, spices, and hardwoods, just to name a few. Industry from all over the world is obtaining these resources
without regard for the adverse effects to the environment that will result. Vast areas are being burned and used as farm land. The remaining ash
serves as a good fertilizer for the crops for two or three years, and then another patch must be cleared. As populations increase in some regions,
rainforest is burned or cleared for development. Trees are cleared by cattle farmers for pasture. The grass is eliminated , the soil is washed away,
and only a hard crust remains, leaving an area that probably won't flourish again for many years. Due to all of the aforementioned reasons, the
quantity of acreage that is being eliminated each year is staggering. Each year, about 20 million hectares are lost. In comparison, Austria covers
about 10 million hectares. This translates to roughly 149 acres burned or scavenged every minute.
The table below lists some of the region in which depletion rates are the worst, including the square mileage of rainforest in tact now, and the
percentage of it that is lost each year.

Los Tuxtlas Research Paper
Our study was carried out within the forest reserve of the LT–TBFS Los Tuxtlas Tropical Biology Field Station (hereafter LT–TBFS), which is
located in the southeastern Mexico (18º 35.077´ N; 95º 4.442´ W; 120–690 m.a.s.l.), in the southern portion of the State of Veracruz, on the
windward foothills of the San Martin Volcano in the Sierra de Los Tuxtlas mountain range (altitudinal gradient 0–1680 m.a.s.l.) (García–Aguirre et
al., 2010; González–Soriano et al., 1997) this mountain range is a physiographic province settled on the Coastal Slope of the Gulf of Mexico
(Cervantes–Zamora et al., 1990). The entire extension of the LT–TBFS (640 ha) forms part of the core zone of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
"Los Tuxtlas", which includes the largest area of the Los Tuxtlas region (CONANP–SEMARNAT, 1998). The climate regimen in the region is

TKR: Ethnographic Study
Five vegetation types and one land use were classified in TKR (Table 3.1). The overall spatial patterns of the vegetation types were aligned to
Mucina & Rutherfold (2006), but the revised map illustrated distribution of the vegetation types in higher spatial resolution (Fig. 3.1). The refined
vegetation map was classified solely on the reflectance values measured by the sensors on the satellite and did not consider the species
composition. Defining and describing vegetation types for their species composition and other characteristics is required for contrasting vegetation
types for the refined map and the literature (Mucina & Rutherfold 2006), however that was not the scope of this study. Likewise, accuracy

for the north–north east towards the south–south west direction ca. 0.5 – 1 km interval. This vegetation type was predominantly grassland, but
species composition was variable depending on the topography of the undulating dunes. The crest of the dunes had lower vegetative coverage with
perennial grass Eragrostis pallens and Stipagrostis uniplumis and the occasional stands of Terminalia serisea. On the slope of the dunes, perennial
grass E. pallens, S. uniplumis, and Aristida congesta ssp. congesta usually dominated, and sparse tall shrubs such as Grey camel thorn Acacia
haematoxylon and Camel thorn Acacia erioloba, as well as herbaceous species Elephantorrhiza elephantine and Hermannia tomentosa were
observed. Strips of the dunes typically had higher shrub and tree coverage with Black thorn Acacia merifela, Velvet raisin Grewia flava, and

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Tropical...
Tropical Rainforest More than half of the world's tropical rainforests can be found in Central and South America, however they are also present in
south eastern Asia and Africa. All of the world's tropical rainforests can be found at the approximate location of –20 degrees latitude, also known as
the area between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. These types of areas exist because of the specific climate, soil types, and
diversity present in these regions. This specific area falls in the equatorial and tropical zone and are therefore their climates are controlled by the
intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and it's low pressure centers around the equator. Winds present are moist equatorial (mE) and moist tropical

Below the understory there is a woody shrub layer and non–woody herb layer (citation). An adaptation present in many trees native to this area is
the "drip–tip". This is advantageous because if water is allowed to sit on leaves and then the hot sun returns – it can easily burn the leaves causing
the trees to be stressed and often defoliate. The other limiting factor that determines the type of vegetation present in the tropical rainforest is soil.
The tropical rainforest possesses well developed soil, however it maintains no visible O and A horizons. Thus attributing to the nutrient poor soil
quality. Soil in tropical rainforest also has relatively low soil productivity. This is because as one organisms dies the nutrients left behind that
would normally replenish the soil, are quickly (if not immediately) re–uptake into neighboring trees, fungi, and similar organisms. The soil can be
described as sandy and loamy and it's appearance is red/orange in color with a prevalence of Aluminum and Iron with a pH of approximately 4.5–
5.5 – all of these characteristics classify the soil as an Oxisol. The tropical rainforest is considered a carbon sink because it uses more CO2 than it
produces. There is an estimated 17 kilograms of carbon per square meter stored in rainforests. They are deemed the 2nd largest carbon sink for soil
and the largest carbon

Importance Of A Flower In My Life
Cake, flowers, presents, flowers, family, flowers. Never before did I think a flower could change my life. The one flower, just one of millions,
changed everything. It wasn't just a flower. No, it was far more. Everything changed. The people, the places, the activities. Everything in my life
changed. My life was taken on a rollercoaster. It was flipped. It was turned upside turn. It climbed high, just to fall back down. When it would
reach the top of the climb, I would feel as if I was free falling and never going to stop. My stomach would leap from my chest, just as it did the
many times I was frightened. I would corkscrew through uncertain times. Only it wasn't just on a ride. I couldn't tell myself it was just for fun or
that it was going to be over soon, because I didn't know that. My stomach would lurch and I would sometimes just stay still, completely petrified.
Not knowing what to do, who to talk to, or what to say. I didn't know the next step I should take. Any one step in the wrong direction could make
me fall right off the track. Many times, I would try to take small steps, to avoid falling off the track. Although, sometimes a roller coaster would
come from behind and hit me. I didn't figure out who to trust early enough and I would be on my own against the one who wanted my to fall. Then
my mind would go back to the flower. I can picture that flower in my head, like it was only yesterday. The image is crisp in my mind. Some other

Colombia Country Description
Colombia is a country that is located in the continent of South America. Colombia is on the tip of South America. Anybody who comes in by car
from USA, Mexico, or even Central America, would have to pass through Colombia to enter South America. Colombia has five neighboring
countries: Panama, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, and Venezuela. Colombia is the 26th largest country in the world. The Latitude is 4.5833 N and the
longitude is 74.0667 W.
Colombia is located in the equatorial region of the Earth; therefore, Colombia does not have any seasons. The Andeans chain of mountains crosses
Colombia, which is the reason Colombia has a lot of different climate. For example, someone can feel a cold weather front and at the same time

Rogerian Argument: Tropic Thunder Essay
Rogerian Argument: Tropic Thunder The movie "Tropic Thunder" is a comedy about five actors who set out to create a movie about a Vietnam
veteran's experience. The actors self–absorbed, attitudes caused them to look fake and over–dramatic. As a last minute last hope effort, the director
sent these five actors to, what he believes, is where the war actually happened. Soon after arriving to this unknown land, the director is blown up
by an old land mine. The actors then find themselves trapped in a real life situation where they have to use their newly learned skills to survive
being stranded in the middle of a dangerous drug triangle. In the movie, Tugg Speedman was a fading action star that was going through a rough

the dumbest mother fu*ker that ever lived. Tugg Speedman: [pause] When I was playing the character.)(IMBD) This scene, continued with Tugg
saying that he was so into character that he actually felt "retarded" and that he had to remind himself that it was ok to be stupid or dumb. Kirk
backed him up by saying "to be a moron, moronical and imbecile" and concluded by saying his movie was a failure because he went full retard;
never go full retard. When the movie was released to the public, it was viewed as controversial. The main reason that the movie was so
controversial is because of the stigmatism toward people with special needs. Was this movie offensive enough to be completely banned? Advocates
for people with mental disabilities protested and boycotted Tropic Thunder stating that the movie was demeaning, insulting, and hurtful. The
advocates reasoning for the protest was because of the movie's the repetitive use of the word "retarded," and the movie's offensive view of people
with intellectual disabilities. For then, the scene was far from funny. It was not only bullying against people with mental retardation, but also it was
a complete mockery of the "R" word. The scene was meant to poke fun at actors from movies such as Rain Man, I am Sam, and Forrest Gump,
however, some people believe that the movie was making fun of people with

Precipitation Of Precipitation
Precipitation Analysis
With an average annual total rainfall of 53.1 inches, the six stations examined and their mean rates of precipitation are consistent with the claim
that the entire state of Florida receives, on average, 54 inches of precipitation annually. Stations like Deland, Inverness, High Springs and Canal
Point differed little from the expected mean, while Marathon Shores and Niceville deviated noticeably. This deviation, however, is chiefly
explained by the stations' locations and the patterns of rainfall associated with those positions. For example, Marathon Shore's aberration is likely
due to the fact that the area received comparatively less rainfall during the summer months of June through September with a rather low mean ...

Deland, Inverness and Canal Point, for example, are situated much closer to the coast when compared to High Springs, and they exhibit a greater
total annual precipitation rate of 53.72 inches as opposed to High Spring's 52.27 inches and a greater annual monthly mean of 4.48 inches
compared to the 4.36 inches of High Springs. While relatively small, this variance among precipitation rates is still great enough to confirm the
claim that most of the time, at least, stations located closer to the coast experience overall higher mean monthly and mean annual precipitation
rates.
Using the data collected solely from the selected six stations, a possible correlation is unclear between the amount of precipitation received and the
number of hurricane strikes within a given area despite the claim made in the conceptual model. Niceville, for instance, experiences the highest
overall mean monthly and mean annual precipitation of the six stations in addition to experiencing the highest mean precipitation rate during the
specified months of July through October with a mean of 6.68 inches, but according to the first map provided in the guidance document, it did not
experience the highest number of hurricane strikes. Between the years of 1900 to 2010, Niceville was hit but 10 to 12 hurricanes, but the station
that received the least amount of rain both in terms of mean monthly and mean annual precipitation and the

In the first round we had to argue what form of government we should have. The working poor, working professionals, Upeeple, religious leaders,
and, Apeeple agreed to a presidential democracy. We argued that a presidential democracy will allow our voices to be heard, and the president
would represent our interests. On the other hand the former monarchs and military leaders wanted a monarchy or dictatorship. With a monarchy the
former monarchs can take back control and return to their original glory. The military leaders wanted a dictatorship because of its reliance on
military power. The wealthy business owners wanted a parliamentary democracy. With this the parliament can keep the prime minister in check,
and do things to help society. At end we voted for presidential democracy because we want to be headed by someone who not only represents us
but is also voted in by us. The next round was for system of government. The working poor, Upeeple, religious leaders, Apeeple, and military
leaders all argued for a federal system. All of us believed that a federal system would keep the government in check, and that state and national
government can offer jobs such as miners, road builders, gas pumpers, etc. With this we believed we can lower the unemployment rate and make it

Why Nations Fail By Daron Acemoglu And James A. Robinson
Why Nations Fail by Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson explains the different and unique origins of power, prosperity, and poverty for
certain nations. The preface of Why Nations Fail foreshadows what is next to come by explaining that key historical events in life can make or
break a country's success and future. Next, each chapter dives into these key historical events, known as case studies, and analyses that chapter's
nation(s) and why the nation is either poverty–stricken or prosperous. This is known as the book's methodology. The authors give examples such as
with inclusive and extractive institutions to argue against theories that suggest why nations are poor that are not correct such as the geography
hypothesis, culture hypothesis, and ignorance hypothesis. This book argues that nations have and will continue to fail politically and economically
if they implement extractive institutions instead of inclusive institutions. The gap in literature between the authors of Why Nations Fail and other
authors of works of non–fiction that describe why nations fail is the nature of specific institutions. These institutions are inclusive economic
institutions, inclusive political institutions, extractive economic institutions, and extractive political institutions. These different institutions are the
main focus of the book. The authors go on in detail as to why these institutions are so key to understanding how a nation became to poverty–
stricken or rich. The authors of Why Nations Fail particularly dislike and articulate why hypothesis such as the geography, ignorance and culture
hypothesis are not sufficient evidence for why a nation was and still continue to be poor to this day. These hypotheses can be known as the
"fallacious hypotheses." The first fallacious hypothesis is the geography hypothesis. The geography hypothesis states that the differences between
countries and their economic success is due their geography and where they are located. For example, the French philosopher Montesquieu
believed that tropical climates were less prosperous than temperate climates because the soil is not the most productive and the tropical climate
made the inhabitants lazy, and therefore making them work less and

Due to human influence, many we consider native to Bali have been introduced by humans within the last centuries, making it sometimes hard to
distinguish what plants are really native. The most common larger trees are: banyan trees, jackfruit, coconuts, and bamboo species. The landscape
is also populated with Acadia trees and many varieties of bananas plants. Numerous flowers can be seen such as hibiscus, frangipani,
bougainvillea, poinsettia, oleander, jasmine, roses, begonias, orchids and hydrangeas. Rice comes in many local varieties. Other plants with
agricultural value include: salak, mangosteen, corn, coffee and water spinach.
History of the school:
After meeting in Indonesia, John Hardy and his wife Cynthia conceived of the 'green school,' an educational village community amongst the jungle
and rice fields of Bali, to spread their sustainable altruistic message through an alternative education system to locals and foreigners alike. They
called on Balinese practice PT bamboo pure to work out the technical design aspects of the entirely bamboo structure. The plentifully supplied
Asian wood was utilized to benefit from the potential of all its properties to become structural, decorative, recreational, used as flooring, seating,
tables, and several other fixtures. The local vernacular finds a new relationship fused with contemporary design strategies throughout the assembly

The Tropical Rainforest Ecosystem
Tropical rainforests contains the most diverse ecosystems of any biome, containing over half of the world's flora and fauna species despite only
covering less than 6% of the earth's surface. Ecosystems have flourished here because of plentiful rainfall (over 100mm per year) a humid but
consistent temperature (http://www.blue planetbiomes.org/rainforest.htm). All this combines to something of a nightmare to live in, especially for
someone who has never experienced it before.
So whether your plane has crash landed into the Amazon or you were stupid enough to follow iMaps when you told it to take you to the local
McDonalds, this guide will instruct you to survive in a tropical rainforest.
Water
You might think this one is easy, you're carrying a drink bottle with you! But that bottle isn't going to last more than two days in this humid
environment, and you're not going to make it out in that time. Tropical Rainforests contain water sources that can be found in the form of streams
or lakes or even tiny water vines. One tip into finding a lake or stream is look for a place where shorter, fern plants flourish, and not much tall trees
are found. If a water source cannot be found, rainwater is more than enough to keep you alive. Remember before consuming any water, to boil it
over a fire (see 'Fire') so that any bacteria is killed off. (http://news.discovery.com /adventure/survival/top–ways–to–purify–water–in–the–

Essay on Ending Destruction of the Rainforest
Ending Destruction of the Rainforest
As destruction of the rainforest continues, man slowly paves the inevitable path to a clear end. It has been known that the rainforest is an essential
provider for the balance of the mother earth and that it acts as a key for life as we know it. Yet, the world still decides to quietly watch the
disappearance. In fact, most people realize what exactly is taking place. But however, instead of trying to aid in the termination of this disaster.
They place this into the back of their ignorant little minds thinking that it will not directly effect them. Every day the removal continues, it actually
occurs extremely fast and at a pace of 80 acres per minute. That means at 80 acres per minute with 60 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reason for this being that the more agricultural products the county provides to export, the more profit that the country can make. With this
being the case these farmers will purchase these lands. After a purchase is made the farmer then in–turn can do as pleases. Farmers then destroy all
trees upon the land in an effort to provide ideal cultivation areas to produce large cash crop products. Although they will use this land for
generating food products, the main concern lies within the fact that soil in which they will be using is extremely low in nutrients. This meaning that
every 2 to 3 years of usage the farmer will then be forced to expunge the used land followed by the obtaining of new lands. This in–turn becomes a
continual cycle where the farmers become parasites of the land, where day by day they will suck every ounce of life from the land until it is dry.
Ranching is another cause for destruction of rainforests. Ranchers obtain land in the same method as farmers do, but however, they are not forced
to move from land to land as the farmers do. Ranchers clear large areas of rainforest to become pastures for their cattle. This land does not cost
them very much and often more then not the ranchers are able to collect this land for free, enabling them to sell cattle at relatively low prices.
Cattle ranching for beef exports are perhaps one of

My Fear Of Thunders And Thunder
My fear of thunders and lightning
It is truly fascinating how children experience and overcome many fears as they are growing up and learning whether or not something is scary.
Astraphobia, otherwise known as the Phobia (fear) of anything related to lightning and thunder, is one of them. It undoubtedly is one of the most
complicated things I have ever had to defeat. I obviously was afraid of lightning, but I realized how ridiculous and even pathetic it could be for me.
Being among my friends, leaving them and start looking for a place where I could feel more comfortable and safer (a sort of shelter). Sometimes
hiding underneath a bed, covering my ears and even crying because acting like that is not logical to those who have no phobia, I felt like
abandoned. All of that because of something that occurs within the clouds, far away. Overcoming a phobia of something can magically increase
your self–confidence. Sometimes, it is what others think about us that makes us to think about changing. "Do not fear," my father always said.
"Before your teenage years, it will be gone." And he was right. According to 'fearof.net', most cases of excessive fear of thunder, lightning
gradually diminish over the years"; but my case seemed to be particular. One of my most effective remedy against this fright, which had so many
times made me feel ridiculous towards

There are many great examples of characters who communicate well in movies. A character with good communication skills can send messages
clearly and understand clearly. To communicate well one must have emotional intelligence. They use their verbal skills to enhance the non–verbal
emotional cues and get the point across. In stark contrast, there are the characters that do not communicate well. These characters send mixed
signals, say words without meaning, or completely misuse words. The verbal communication rarely explains the emotions they may be exhibiting.
They are either unable or unwilling to even care about anyone outside of themselves which makes them incapable of communication on any level.

3.1.1. Why does life thrive in the tropical rainforest?
The tropical rainforest is very rich in water and food thus life thrives. We all know that food and water are the things that animals need the most for
their survival. It also has a warm temperature due to the constant energy that the sun provides. The plants need the sunlight for the process of
photosynthesis to be completed and use it to derived energy. And the plants serve as the food for some animals and these animals serve as the food
to the carnivores. These are some of the reasons of why does life thrive in tropical rainforest.

Is biodiversity affected by these factors? Explain your answer.
Yes, biodiversity is affected by these factors since most of the species live in the rainforests and they depend on it. If the rainforest is affected by
those factors, then also the biodiversity is also affected because in the rainforests, species have a chain reaction to each other like passing message
to different persons.
9.4. What is a biodiversity hotspot?
A biodiversity hotspot is a biogeographic region that is both a significant reservoir of biodiversity and is threatened with destruction. The term
biodiversity hotspot specifically refers to 25 biologically rich areas around the world that have lost at least 70 percent of their original habitat.
9.5. How would you explain the commonalities of continents and countries in your result? Explain why most of the tropical rainforests are
considered biodiversity hotspots.
Tropical rainforests, nowadays, are endangered and already facing some destructions. Also, the species that are living there are slowly decreasing
and also becoming endangered. These are some of the reasons why tropical rainforests are considered biodiversity hotspots for rainforests are
already losing their original habitat.

Sonqo Tribe Natural Environment
The Effect of the Natural Environment on the Native Tribes
Both the Yanomamo and the Sonqo are effected by the environment in which they have been placed, and they have adapted to where they live just
as every other human has had to adapt to their natural environment. The effect that the natural environment has had on the two tribes can easily be
seen in their religious beliefs, their warfare, and the differences in their culture for tribe to tribe within the same people.
The religious beliefs of the Sonqo have been shaped by the land in which they live in. In the mountainous terrain of the highland Andes, many of
the beautiful sights are considered sacred to the Sonqo people, and many are traveled to as celebrations of the Gods and their gifts to the Runakuna.
Chagnon talks about how the Yanomamo have many words for "sex" because it is very important to their culture, something similar can be said
about the Sonqo and how many words they have for earth and natural formations.
The different formations can separate different provinces of the Runakuna people. For example, the ragged range of mountains separates the the

that is made from cane, and is obtained in the provinces of Colquepata, P'isaq, and Cuzco. This means that in order for the Sonqo to obtain trago,
they have to carry large tins back to their village. All this trading and drinking is effected by the weather around them. Similar to the Yanomamo,
the dry season creates favorable conditions for trade and therefor is a time of heavier drinking. (Allen

The Word "Retard" Essay
The Use of the Word "Retard"
Have you ever used the word "retard" without thinking about what the word really means? Patricia Bauer author of "A Movie, A Word, and My
Family's Battle" writes about how the movie industry uses the word "retard" loosely with no regard for the intellectually disabled community.
Bauer explains how society has accepted the use of the word "retard" as a common phrase to mean or make fun of a mistake that was made. The

She states two statements, "The studio never considered that its portrayal of people with disabilities would touch a nerve" and "for millions of
Americans like Margaret and me, it does" (121). With no formal conclusion the reader is left with a few questions. Is this essay an argument or a
story based on emotion?
Bauer's argument is based on emotion which makes it hard for the reader to follow. It is solely an emotional essay. The writer seems to have a very
personal stance on the subject. She has raised a daughter with Down syndrome and she has tried so hard to shelter her from the hurtful word
"retard." Emotional essays provide no new ways of looking at the problem. Bauer's argument was mostly a lot of finger pointing at the movie
industry and their lack of compassion when using the word "retard." Furthermore, the writer expresses society's lack of compassion for the
intellectually disabled community. The writer demonstrates examples of people's use of this word as a means for expressing careless acts. Bauer
states, "A clerk in a store apologizes for being "such a retard" when she can't find an item for me. Ouch. Kids at the mall call one another "you big
retard." Ouch. A friend tells a long, involved story at my dinner table about her recent fender bender, with a punch line about "some retard" who
parked behind her" (119). Bauer does not argue either of these points but just expresses her feeling about

As I was lying in bed recalling the event happened an hour before I was thinking to myself that I will never look at lightning the same way again.
Thunder and lightning was still present in the night sky as I lay there in bed thanking God I was alive and well. Each flash of lightning lit the entire
room and each clap of thunder rattled the windows of my hotel room. Lightning can seem much more terrifying when you're up 20,000 ft in the
mountains, and the thunder sounds a lot louder too. The sound of nature's fury seemed to slowly descend as the night went on, but my nerves did
not. I was still stunned and in shock of being stuck in a lightning storm high in the mountains. I never thought about the power and damage

Soon the moonlight illuminated the scenery. As I was standing on the balcony admiring the scenery something finally went wrong, a huge black
cloud covered the moon. I soon heard the thunder. It seemed to be nothing to worry about, so I didn't acknowledge it. A few hours later the thunder
grew louder and I could see the flashes of lightning headed our way. I went inside to inform my parents of the weather, but they didn't seem to
worry about it much until the cloud was almost over the lodge. My family and I left the reception alone while everyone else stayed in cover; they
were the smart ones I thought.
We left quickly walking fast and practically running toward the gondolas so we wouldn't be stuck on the mountain all night long. By now the storm
was close and so was the lightning. The people at the station loaded the four of us into a gondola and we slowly worked our way down the
mountain. Hanging in this tiny box of metal by a hook on a wire cable was not the most reassuring thing. I looked out the window hoping to see
the ground, but it was too dark. I could barely see the hand in front my own face. Lightning would flash, and all I could make out were the tops of
trees. Paranoia overwhelmed me. My breaths seemed to become further and further apart as time slowed. As I was trying to relieve my mind of
worst case scenario, a big flash and enormous rumble sounded. We stopped moving. Our gondola had

Using The Word 'Retard In The Movie Tropic Thunder'
Walking down the hallway you may hear someone say something a little outlandish followed with an exasperated, "That's retarded!" This mundane
use of the word "retarded" to replace the word "stupid" or "weird" has become too widely accepted and often not given a second thought. The word
retard has transformed from a clinical word used solely by doctors to a word used to describe any and almost everything. Using "retarded" is
disrespectful and hurtful in ways those who don't have any mental disabilities can't even imagine. The second nature, "slang" use of the word
'retard' to express disapproval, or distaste and describe a situation or person (with or without and intellectual disability) is unacceptable, hurtful and

Lady Gaga, Lebron James and the 2008 film "Tropic Thunder" all have used the r–word as a slur with a demeaning context. Why would any young
child think it was wrong to use to r–word to describe something when their idol is using it? Or a movie there watching or hear in the other room?
Both Gaga and Lebron later issued apologizes(Fuoco), but that doesn't change the fact that even people who are used to being in the spotlight and
are supposed to be educated in public speaking are using the r–word casually. The film "Tropic Thunder" used the r–word over 20 times (Fuoco)

The animals that live there differ depending on the weather. There are even some similarities between the desert and the rainforest. The first thing
that is a big different is the weather. In the desert there is little rain for short periods of time but in the rain forest it rains most of the year. The

Hop into the Jeep, campers! Today, we're heading deep into the jungle. We're going to explore the tropical rainforest habitat. These jungles are
located near the equator. The equator is the center line that circles the Earth. The areas near the equator receive twelve hours of daylight every day.
Talk about getting your daily value of vitamin D! But, even with that much time in the sun, almost none of that light penetrates the forest floor.
This is because the rainforest's trees and plants are so dense, they block all the light!

On a burning hot August day a tribe of people called the Kewanee were trying to go about their daily business, but it was just too hot. They tried

"What're we supposed to do? Everything is dying! People are dying!", "We can't even go about our work, it's just too hot. How're the people
supposed to survive?". Were many of the questions asked. The people were absolutely devastated and had nowhere to turn to for answers, but one
night a woman appeared in a dream of Franco's telling him that if his people showed true kindness, courage, and strength that they would be

The kindness would show through by giving to others, the little they had left, that were more in need. The courage would be shown when they

When the gods and goddesses go bowling, everyone knows that they are very upset, therefore they cry. These tears shed by the gods and goddesses
up in the heavens come together and give us rain. The rain can be light, slow, and steady. This pattern shows that the gods and goddesses are just
stressed. When the rain is heavy and mad, the gods and goddesses are downright furious. These types of rains could cause floods.
During the bowling adventure, the clatter of the bowling ball hitting the hardwood floor then hitting the pins head on cause the rolls of thunder.
When the thunder is soft and mellow, it is most likely the goddesses that bowl lightly with grace. The earsplitting rolls of thunder symbolize the
gods that throw the ball fiercely without aim. So when it thunders, there is no need to hide under the covers, the gods and goddesses are just
hanging out and having fun.
The many colors of lighting that are thrown across the sky symbolize the strikes and spares that the gods and goddesses make. It is really that
simple. The more strikes and spares, the merrier the gods and goddesses are. Next time there is lightning dancing across the sky; just know that
there is a really exciting bowling game taking place up in the heavens.

Bartlett became aware of a noise. It sounded like an echo through a long metal tunnel, a thunderous boom. It was loud and sudden, jolting her
awake, but not quite. It seemed more like having an awareness without thought. Her heart began to pound, the beats breaking through, pulsing in
her ears. Fear. Confusion. She remembered years ago, as a child, going exploring with her friends in the woods near her house. Not far from the
main path was a long dried out log. The peeling bark had a musty odor of earth and rotting vegetation. Her friends had dared her to enter the center
of the log and crawl within the darkness. Not wishing to seem scared or girly, she crouched down and inched her way into the opening, her arms in
front of her, pulling her forward. Sounds muted, and darkness encircled her as she moved her body into the log's interior. Unidentifiable wisps of
cobwebs and debris brushed against her arms and face. It was raining that day, a slow and steady rain, making everything damp and slippery. These

The Environmental Impact Of The Borneo Lowland Rainforests
Borneo as an island is the third largest island in the world, being just 1% of the world's territory yet holds approximately 6% of the world's
biodiversity in its tropical rainforests. Borneo is a global ecoregion made up of 2 terrestrial ecoregions; Borneo Lowland rainforests and Borneo
Montane rainforests. This environmental impact report is focused on the Borneo Lowland Rainforest. The Borneo lowland rainforest is located in
South–East Asia and routes through parts of Indonesia and Malaysia, and is also located north of Australia. It includes a large diversity of habitats
such as, large areas of karst (barren limestone plateaus with caves, sinkholes, and gullies), and a high–altitude swamp forest.
The Borneo lowland rainforests are defined as the areas that lie around mountains and below their level. Borneo lowland rainforests contain 10,000
plant species, 380 bird species and 15,000 mammal species. There is no distinct 'borders' that would outline Borneo's Lowland Rainforests, but an
approximate estimate suggests the total area being around 420,000 km2. From those statistics it is estimated the lowland forest takes up around
57% of Borneo's total land. It lies within the tropical monsoon climate zone. The Borneo Lowland Rainforest is evidently a rainforest. Its features
include a stable climate throughout the year with a huge amount of rainfall, with the monthly rainfall being beyond 200mm though out the year.
The average daily temperature is 31 degrees Celsius

Global Environmental Issue : Deforestation Essay
Global Environmental Issue: Deforestation
Deforestation is a global environmental threat the planet is currently experiencing. Deforestation in tropical rainforests is especially problematic as
they are home to a myriad of important plant and animal species. The rich biodiversity found in these environments are needed, as we rely heavily
on the ecological services they provide for us. Forest exports, cattle ranching, and international corporations and agencies are a few factors and
actors to this issue. It is important to consider these economic and political factors if we wish to establish appropriate governance. Although the
mass clearing of trees is regarded as essential for economic development, deforestation will have detrimental consequences for the international
community and thus requires serious global governance.
Tropical rainforests are generally located around the equator, in Central and South America, Western Africa, and Southeast Asia. These regions
contain approximately one billion acres of forested land (Speth & Haas, 2006, p. 29). Its warm and wet climate allows for the thirty million plant
and animal species to flourish in abundance. With an eco–centric perspective, we view them as valuable biomes, rich in biodiversity and in beauty.
The variety of fauna and flora species are integral elements to the productivity of these ecosystems. Essentially, the intrinsic value contained here is
unquantifiable.

They both believed that air smashing against the clouds caused thunder and, as the air struggled its way through the clouds, it kindled a flame
which was lightning.
Anaxogoras (ca 499–427 BC), however, believed that thunder resulted when fire flashing through clouds (lightning) was quenched by the water in
the cloud. Democritus (ca 460–370 BC), on the other hand, suggested that thunder and lightning were due to the unequal mixing of particles within
clouds which caused violent motions, the resulting sound of which was thunder.
Aristotle (384–322 BC), in his series of essays entitled Meteorologica (written around 334 BC), wrote that thunder occurs when
"the dry exhalation that gets trapped when the air is in the process of colliding is forcibly ejected as the clouds condense and in its course strikes
the surrounding clouds, and the noise caused by the impact is what we call thunder...similarly the windy exhalations in the clouds produces thunder
when it strikes a dense cloud formation. Different kinds of sound are produced because of the lack of uniformity in the clouds and because hollows
occur where their density is not continuous."
He also wrote that, in general,
"the ejected winds burns with a fine and gentle fire and it is then what we call lightning, which occurs when the falling wind appears to

actions impact the long–term use of the land we capitalize on every day. In Africa, the physical environment has a huge impact on what plants and
vegetation grow throughout the continent, affecting how its inhabitants live their daily lives. It is through Africa's physical environment and
climate variability that determines the continent's diverse vegetation species and drives local economies.
Africa's Physical Environment
Africa's physical environment is a vast piece of land due to several factors. A large reason as to why the continent is so large is because of the
number of cratons that exist throughout the continent, which contain areas that are composed of ancient crystalline basement rock (Child, Lesson
2.1, 2017). Due to its long–dated history, Africa has a very complex geological makeup. Another contributor to this vast continent's physical
environment is the impact of tectonic plates. Because the tectonic plate Africa sits on is relatively stationary and there has been no collision of
neighboring plates, mountain chains have not formed. However, a geographical element that is well known due to the impact of continental plates
is the formation of the Great Rift Valley (McKenna).

Astraphobia Definition

  • 1. Astraphobia Definition Astraphobia Sirens blaring the flash of lightning then the colossal clap of thunder. Many people think that storms are amazing and beautiful, but some think storms are the worst thing on the planet. These people who hate storms have a phobia called astraphobia. This phobia is also very common in children and if you have this phobia, don't feel ashamed, an astonishing 2.1% of people on this planet have astraphobia. Astraphobia is nothing to be ashamed of and many people suffer from this phobia. Like many phobias, this is caused by a traumatic experience or event. For example, if someone was struck by lightning, they would be afraid to go somewhere if it is raining or storming outside. People who are 'high strung' or 'nervous' about ... Missing Charts Rainforest Depletion: Adverse Effects on the Environment Introduction The depletion of tropical rainforests by third world countries, as well as by American industry, has been a growing area of concern for many environmental organizations. Animal rights activists are livid at the frightening rate in which species are becoming extinct in these regions. Conservationists argue that the foliage is disappearing at rates that replanting programs will never be able to compete with. Environmentalists and Meteorologists fear that the elimination of enormous quantities of acreage will result in a long list of problems, including global warming, abnormal precipitation patterns, and unpredictable weather systems, just to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Depletion: Rates and Reasons Rainforest are being depleted at alarming rates for a number of reasons. A number of raw materials can be obtained from these regions, including oil, rubber, spices, and hardwoods, just to name a few. Industry from all over the world is obtaining these resources without regard for the adverse effects to the environment that will result. Vast areas are being burned and used as farm land. The remaining ash serves as a good fertilizer for the crops for two or three years, and then another patch must be cleared. As populations increase in some regions, rainforest is burned or cleared for development. Trees are cleared by cattle farmers for pasture. The grass is eliminated , the soil is washed away, and only a hard crust remains, leaving an area that probably won't flourish again for many years. Due to all of the aforementioned reasons, the quantity of acreage that is being eliminated each year is staggering. Each year, about 20 million hectares are lost. In comparison, Austria covers about 10 million hectares. This translates to roughly 149 acres burned or scavenged every minute. The table below lists some of the region in which depletion rates are the worst, including the square mileage of rainforest in tact now, and the percentage of it that is lost each year. The overall spatial patterns of the vegetation types were aligned to Mucina & Rutherfold (2006), but the revised map illustrated distribution of the vegetation types in higher spatial resolution (Fig. 3.1). The refined vegetation map was classified solely on the reflectance values measured by the sensors on the satellite and did not consider the species composition. Defining and describing vegetation types for their species composition and other characteristics is required for contrasting vegetation types for the refined map and the literature (Mucina & Rutherfold 2006), however that was not the scope of this study. This vegetation type was predominantly grassland, but species composition was variable depending on the topography of the undulating dunes. The crest of the dunes had lower vegetative coverage with perennial grass Eragrostis pallens and Stipagrostis uniplumis and the occasional stands of Terminalia serisea. On the slope of the dunes, perennial grass E. pallens, S. uniplumis, and Aristida congesta ssp. congesta usually dominated, and sparse tall shrubs such as Grey camel thorn Acacia haematoxylon and Camel thorn Acacia erioloba, as well as herbaceous species Elephantorrhiza elephantine and Hermannia tomentosa were observed. • 9. Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Tropical... Tropical Rainforest More than half of the world's tropical rainforests can be found in Central and South America, however they are also present in south eastern Asia and Africa. All of the world's tropical rainforests can be found at the approximate location of –20 degrees latitude, also known as the area between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. These types of areas exist because of the specific climate, soil types, and diversity present in these regions. This specific area falls in the equatorial and tropical zone and are therefore their climates are controlled by the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and it's low pressure centers around the equator. Winds present are moist equatorial (mE) and moist tropical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Below the understory there is a woody shrub layer and non–woody herb layer (citation). An adaptation present in many trees native to this area is the "drip–tip". This is advantageous because if water is allowed to sit on leaves and then the hot sun returns – it can easily burn the leaves causing the trees to be stressed and often defoliate. The other limiting factor that determines the type of vegetation present in the tropical rainforest is soil. The tropical rainforest possesses well developed soil, however it maintains no visible O and A horizons. Thus attributing to the nutrient poor soil quality. Soil in tropical rainforest also has relatively low soil productivity. This is because as one organisms dies the nutrients left behind that would normally replenish the soil, are quickly (if not immediately) re–uptake into neighboring trees, fungi, and similar organisms. The soil can be described as sandy and loamy and it's appearance is red/orange in color with a prevalence of Aluminum and Iron with a pH of approximately 4.5– 5.5 – all of these characteristics classify the soil as an Oxisol. The tropical rainforest is considered a carbon sink because it uses more CO2 than it produces. There is an estimated 17 kilograms of carbon per square meter stored in rainforests. They are deemed the 2nd largest carbon sink for soil and the largest carbon ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Importance Of A Flower In My Life Cake, flowers, presents, flowers, family, flowers. Never before did I think a flower could change my life. The one flower, just one of millions, changed everything. It wasn't just a flower. No, it was far more. Everything changed. The people, the places, the activities. Everything in my life changed. My life was taken on a rollercoaster. It was flipped. It was turned upside turn. It climbed high, just to fall back down. When it would reach the top of the climb, I would feel as if I was free falling and never going to stop. My stomach would leap from my chest, just as it did the many times I was frightened. I would corkscrew through uncertain times. Only it wasn't just on a ride. I couldn't tell myself it was just for fun or that it was going to be over soon, because I didn't know that. My stomach would lurch and I would sometimes just stay still, completely petrified. Not knowing what to do, who to talk to, or what to say. I didn't know the next step I should take. Any one step in the wrong direction could make me fall right off the track. Many times, I would try to take small steps, to avoid falling off the track. Although, sometimes a roller coaster would come from behind and hit me. I didn't figure out who to trust early enough and I would be on my own against the one who wanted my to fall. Then my mind would go back to the flower. I can picture that flower in my head, like it was only yesterday. The image is crisp in my mind. Some other things are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Rogerian Argument: Tropic Thunder Essay Rogerian Argument: Tropic Thunder The movie "Tropic Thunder" is a comedy about five actors who set out to create a movie about a Vietnam veteran's experience. The actors self–absorbed, attitudes caused them to look fake and over–dramatic. As a last minute last hope effort, the director sent these five actors to, what he believes, is where the war actually happened. Soon after arriving to this unknown land, the director is blown up by an old land mine. The actors then find themselves trapped in a real life situation where they have to use their newly learned skills to survive being stranded in the middle of a dangerous drug triangle. Tugg Speedman: Exactly, to be a moron. Kirk Lazarus: An imbecile. Tugg Speedman: Yeah! Kirk Lazarus: Like the dumbest mother fu*ker that ever lived. Tugg Speedman: [pause] When I was playing the character.)(IMBD) This scene, continued with Tugg saying that he was so into character that he actually felt "retarded" and that he had to remind himself that it was ok to be stupid or dumb. Kirk backed him up by saying "to be a moron, moronical and imbecile" and concluded by saying his movie was a failure because he went full retard; never go full retard. When the movie was released to the public, it was viewed as controversial. The main reason that the movie was so controversial is because of the stigmatism toward people with special needs. Was this movie offensive enough to be completely banned? Advocates for people with mental disabilities protested and boycotted Tropic Thunder stating that the movie was demeaning, insulting, and hurtful. The advocates reasoning for the protest was because of the movie's the repetitive use of the word "retarded," and the movie's offensive view of people with intellectual disabilities. For then, the scene was far from funny. It was not only bullying against people with mental retardation, but also it was a complete mockery of the "R" word. The scene was meant to poke fun at actors from movies such as Rain Man, I am Sam, and Forrest Gump, however, some people believe that the movie was making fun of people with ... Precipitation Of Precipitation Precipitation Analysis With an average annual total rainfall of 53.1 inches, the six stations examined and their mean rates of precipitation are consistent with the claim that the entire state of Florida receives, on average, 54 inches of precipitation annually. Stations like Deland, Inverness, High Springs and Canal Point differed little from the expected mean, while Marathon Shores and Niceville deviated noticeably. This deviation, however, is chiefly explained by the stations' locations and the patterns of rainfall associated with those positions. For example, Marathon Shore's aberration is likely due to the fact that the area received comparatively less rainfall during the summer months of June through September with a rather low mean ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Deland, Inverness and Canal Point, for example, are situated much closer to the coast when compared to High Springs, and they exhibit a greater total annual precipitation rate of 53.72 inches as opposed to High Spring's 52.27 inches and a greater annual monthly mean of 4.48 inches compared to the 4.36 inches of High Springs. While relatively small, this variance among precipitation rates is still great enough to confirm the claim that most of the time, at least, stations located closer to the coast experience overall higher mean monthly and mean annual precipitation rates. Using the data collected solely from the selected six stations, a possible correlation is unclear between the amount of precipitation received and the number of hurricane strikes within a given area despite the claim made in the conceptual model. Niceville, for instance, experiences the highest overall mean monthly and mean annual precipitation of the six stations in addition to experiencing the highest mean precipitation rate during the specified months of July through October with a mean of 6.68 inches, but according to the first map provided in the guidance document, it did not experience the highest number of hurricane strikes. The working poor, working professionals, Upeeple, religious leaders, and, Apeeple agreed to a presidential democracy. We argued that a presidential democracy will allow our voices to be heard, and the president would represent our interests. On the other hand the former monarchs and military leaders wanted a monarchy or dictatorship. With a monarchy the former monarchs can take back control and return to their original glory. The military leaders wanted a dictatorship because of its reliance on military power. The wealthy business owners wanted a parliamentary democracy. With this the parliament can keep the prime minister in check, and do things to help society. At end we voted for presidential democracy because we want to be headed by someone who not only represents us but is also voted in by us. The next round was for system of government. The working poor, Upeeple, religious leaders, Apeeple, and military leaders all argued for a federal system. • 21. Why Nations Fail By Daron Acemoglu And James A. Robinson Why Nations Fail by Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson explains the different and unique origins of power, prosperity, and poverty for certain nations. The preface of Why Nations Fail foreshadows what is next to come by explaining that key historical events in life can make or break a country's success and future. Next, each chapter dives into these key historical events, known as case studies, and analyses that chapter's nation(s) and why the nation is either poverty–stricken or prosperous. This is known as the book's methodology. The authors give examples such as with inclusive and extractive institutions to argue against theories that suggest why nations are poor that are not correct such as the geography hypothesis, culture hypothesis, and ignorance hypothesis. This book argues that nations have and will continue to fail politically and economically if they implement extractive institutions instead of inclusive institutions. The gap in literature between the authors of Why Nations Fail and other authors of works of non–fiction that describe why nations fail is the nature of specific institutions. These institutions are inclusive economic institutions, inclusive political institutions, extractive economic institutions, and extractive political institutions. These different institutions are the main focus of the book. The authors go on in detail as to why these institutions are so key to understanding how a nation became to poverty– stricken or rich. The authors of Why Nations Fail particularly dislike and articulate why hypothesis such as the geography, ignorance and culture hypothesis are not sufficient evidence for why a nation was and still continue to be poor to this day. These hypotheses can be known as the "fallacious hypotheses." The first fallacious hypothesis is the geography hypothesis. The geography hypothesis states that the differences between countries and their economic success is due their geography and where they are located. For example, the French philosopher Montesquieu believed that tropical climates were less prosperous than temperate climates because the soil is not the most productive and the tropical climate made the inhabitants lazy, and therefore making them work less and ... The Tropical Rainforest Ecosystem Tropical rainforests contains the most diverse ecosystems of any biome, containing over half of the world's flora and fauna species despite only covering less than 6% of the earth's surface. Ecosystems have flourished here because of plentiful rainfall (over 100mm per year) a humid but consistent temperature (http://www.blue planetbiomes.org/rainforest.htm). All this combines to something of a nightmare to live in, especially for someone who has never experienced it before. So whether your plane has crash landed into the Amazon or you were stupid enough to follow iMaps when you told it to take you to the local McDonalds, this guide will instruct you to survive in a tropical rainforest. Water You might think this one is easy, you're carrying a drink bottle with you! But that bottle isn't going to last more than two days in this humid environment, and you're not going to make it out in that time. Tropical Rainforests contain water sources that can be found in the form of streams or lakes or even tiny water vines. One tip into finding a lake or stream is look for a place where shorter, fern plants flourish, and not much tall trees are found. If a water source cannot be found, rainwater is more than enough to keep you alive. Remember before consuming any water, to boil it over a fire (see 'Fire') so that any bacteria is killed off. It has been known that the rainforest is an essential provider for the balance of the mother earth and that it acts as a key for life as we know it. Yet, the world still decides to quietly watch the disappearance. In fact, most people realize what exactly is taking place. But however, instead of trying to aid in the termination of this disaster. The reason for this being that the more agricultural products the county provides to export, the more profit that the country can make. With this being the case these farmers will purchase these lands. After a purchase is made the farmer then in–turn can do as pleases. Farmers then destroy all trees upon the land in an effort to provide ideal cultivation areas to produce large cash crop products. Although they will use this land for generating food products, the main concern lies within the fact that soil in which they will be using is extremely low in nutrients. This meaning that every 2 to 3 years of usage the farmer will then be forced to expunge the used land followed by the obtaining of new lands. This in–turn becomes a continual cycle where the farmers become parasites of the land, where day by day they will suck every ounce of life from the land until it is dry. Ranching is another cause for destruction of rainforests. Ranchers obtain land in the same method as farmers do, but however, they are not forced to move from land to land as the farmers do. Ranchers clear large areas of rainforest to become pastures for their cattle. This land does not cost them very much and often more then not the ranchers are able to collect this land for free, enabling them to sell cattle at relatively low prices. My Fear Of Thunders And Thunder My fear of thunders and lightning It is truly fascinating how children experience and overcome many fears as they are growing up and learning whether or not something is scary. Astraphobia, otherwise known as the Phobia (fear) of anything related to lightning and thunder, is one of them. It undoubtedly is one of the most complicated things I have ever had to defeat. I obviously was afraid of lightning, but I realized how ridiculous and even pathetic it could be for me. Being among my friends, leaving them and start looking for a place where I could feel more comfortable and safer (a sort of shelter). Sometimes hiding underneath a bed, covering my ears and even crying because acting like that is not logical to those who have no phobia, I felt like abandoned. All of that because of something that occurs within the clouds, far away. Overcoming a phobia of something can magically increase your self–confidence. Sometimes, it is what others think about us that makes us to think about changing. "Do not fear," my father always said. "Before your teenage years, it will be gone." And he was right. Sonqo Tribe Natural Environment The Effect of the Natural Environment on the Native Tribes Both the Yanomamo and the Sonqo are effected by the environment in which they have been placed, and they have adapted to where they live just as every other human has had to adapt to their natural environment. The effect that the natural environment has had on the two tribes can easily be seen in their religious beliefs, their warfare, and the differences in their culture for tribe to tribe within the same people. The religious beliefs of the Sonqo have been shaped by the land in which they live in. In the mountainous terrain of the highland Andes, many of the beautiful sights are considered sacred to the Sonqo people, and many are traveled to as celebrations of the Gods and their gifts to the Runakuna. Bauer's argument is based on emotion which makes it hard for the reader to follow. It is solely an emotional essay. The writer seems to have a very personal stance on the subject. She has raised a daughter with Down syndrome and she has tried so hard to shelter her from the hurtful word "retard." Emotional essays provide no new ways of looking at the problem. When the gods and goddesses go bowling, everyone knows that they are very upset, therefore they cry. These tears shed by the gods and goddesses up in the heavens come together and give us rain. The rain can be light, slow, and steady. This pattern shows that the gods and goddesses are just stressed. The earsplitting rolls of thunder symbolize the gods that throw the ball fiercely without aim. So when it thunders, there is no need to hide under the covers, the gods and goddesses are just hanging out and having fun. The many colors of lighting that are thrown across the sky symbolize the strikes and spares that the gods and goddesses make. It is really that simple. The more strikes and spares, the merrier the gods and goddesses are. Next time there is lightning dancing across the sky; just know that there is a really exciting bowling game taking place up in the heavens. In closing, thunderstorms are really an act of the gods and goddesses. It is a way they get rid of stress that we have caused. They would never want us to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. Bartlett: A Short Story Bartlett became aware of a noise. It sounded like an echo through a long metal tunnel, a thunderous boom. It was loud and sudden, jolting her awake, but not quite. It seemed more like having an awareness without thought. Her heart began to pound, the beats breaking through, pulsing in her ears. Fear. Confusion. She remembered years ago, as a child, going exploring with her friends in the woods near her house. Not far from the main path was a long dried out log. The peeling bark had a musty odor of earth and rotting vegetation. Her friends had dared her to enter the center of the log and crawl within the darkness. Not wishing to seem scared or girly, she crouched down and inched her way into the opening, her arms in front of her, pulling her forward. Sounds muted, and darkness encircled her as she moved her body into the log's interior. Unidentifiable wisps of cobwebs and debris brushed against her arms and face. It was raining that day, a slow and steady rain, making everything damp and slippery. These images began to permeate her conscious. She could almost smell the dank odor of moss and wet leaves. Bartlett slowly moved her head. She saw one strap of her red canvas bag on the floor beneath her. Another clap of thunder startled her, causing her to shudder and shake. She was so cold and wet. Fighting the urge to close her eyes and recede into sleep, she pushed herself to reach down and slowly pull up the bag. • 59. The Environmental Impact Of The Borneo Lowland Rainforests Borneo as an island is the third largest island in the world, being just 1% of the world's territory yet holds approximately 6% of the world's biodiversity in its tropical rainforests. Borneo is a global ecoregion made up of 2 terrestrial ecoregions; Borneo Lowland rainforests and Borneo Montane rainforests. This environmental impact report is focused on the Borneo Lowland Rainforest. The Borneo lowland rainforest is located in South–East Asia and routes through parts of Indonesia and Malaysia, and is also located north of Australia. It includes a large diversity of habitats such as, large areas of karst (barren limestone plateaus with caves, sinkholes, and gullies), and a high–altitude swamp forest. The Borneo lowland rainforests are defined as the areas that lie around mountains and below their level. Borneo lowland rainforests contain 10,000 plant species, 380 bird species and 15,000 mammal species. There is no distinct 'borders' that would outline Borneo's Lowland Rainforests, but an approximate estimate suggests the total area being around 420,000 km2. From those statistics it is estimated the lowland forest takes up around 57% of Borneo's total land. It lies within the tropical monsoon climate zone. The Borneo Lowland Rainforest is evidently a rainforest. Its features include a stable climate throughout the year with a huge amount of rainfall, with the monthly rainfall being beyond 200mm though out the year. The average daily temperature is 31 degrees Celsius ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Global Environmental Issue : Deforestation Essay Global Environmental Issue: Deforestation Deforestation is a global environmental threat the planet is currently experiencing. Deforestation in tropical rainforests is especially problematic as they are home to a myriad of important plant and animal species. The rich biodiversity found in these environments are needed, as we rely heavily on the ecological services they provide for us. Forest exports, cattle ranching, and international corporations and agencies are a few factors and actors to this issue. It is important to consider these economic and political factors if we wish to establish appropriate governance. Although the mass clearing of trees is regarded as essential for economic development, deforestation will have detrimental consequences for the international community and thus requires serious global governance. Tropical rainforests are generally located around the equator, in Central and South America, Western Africa, and Southeast Asia. These regions contain approximately one billion acres of forested land (Speth & Haas, 2006, p. 29). Its warm and wet climate allows for the thirty million plant and animal species to flourish in abundance. With an eco–centric perspective, we view them as valuable biomes, rich in biodiversity and in beauty. The variety of fauna and flora species are integral elements to the productivity of these ecosystems. Essentially, the intrinsic value contained here is unquantifiable. Tropical rainforests provide us with essential ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. A Short Story : A Story? Waking up hurt everywhere, so I end up not moving from this crappy bed all day. Not that I want to. My limbs are either stones at my sides or useless noodles that have no control. Just sleep and let my body rest. That's the dream for today. That dream is destroyed by Thorn. Her footsteps loud and the crashing of the door even louder as she bursts in. I sit up, my spine letting out a series of cracks. She just glares at me, arms crossed. "Are you going to just keep staring at me?" she demands. "You're the one who barged in here," I retort. She snorts, rolling her eyes as if I said the most ridiculous thing. "It's raining outside. Need help dragging the buckets up to the roof, unless you don't like drinking fresh water." "You could've asked nicely. I'm guessing here, but that could kill you." An unwomanly grunt and a bucket thrown at my head (which I barely catch) is all she gives me. I peer up and she's already storming away. I slowly swing my feet off the back and stand. My back pops and spasms before just aching. I throw on a jacket, Felix gave me, and follow her. She heads out of the apartment door, passing a lever with a note, saying, "Do Not Touch." I pause by it. "What's this?" Thorn scowls. "The contingency plan. Don't touch it." She starts moving and I keep up. "What's it do?" "Collapses the floor in the living room and trust me, it's a long way down." "In case, you get cornered," I figure. "Smart." "Whatever. Just don't touch it." She stops at the end of the hall, ... Thunder and Early Scientific Theory Essay Thunder and Early Scientific Theory It lends its name to one of the most common weather phenomenon on Earth –– the thunderstorm –– and its associated elements: the thunderhead, thunder cloud, thunder bolt, thundershower and thunder clap. Early humans believed thunder came from the deities –– the voice and expression of their god(s). The roster of thunder gods includes: Thor of the Scandinavians, Donar of the Germans, Zeus of the Greeks, Jupiter of the Romans, Taranis of the Celts, Perkunis of the Slavs, Indra of the Indians and Shango of the Nigerian Yoruba. They both believed that air smashing against the clouds caused thunder and, as the air struggled its way through the clouds, it kindled a flame which was lightning. Anaxogoras (ca 499–427 BC), however, believed that thunder resulted when fire flashing through clouds (lightning) was quenched by the water in the cloud. Democritus (ca 460–370 BC), on the other hand, suggested that thunder and lightning were due to the unequal mixing of particles within clouds which caused violent motions, the resulting sound of which was thunder. Aristotle (384–322 BC), in his series of essays entitled Meteorologica (written around 334 BC), wrote that thunder occurs when "the dry exhalation that gets trapped when the air is in the process of colliding is forcibly ejected as the clouds condense and in its course strikes the surrounding clouds, and the noise caused by the impact is what we call thunder...similarly the windy exhalations in the clouds produces thunder when it strikes a dense cloud formation. Different kinds of sound are produced because of the lack of uniformity in the clouds and because hollows occur where their density is not continuous." He also wrote that, in general, "the ejected winds burns with a fine and gentle fire and it is then what we call lightning, which occurs when the falling wind appears to ... • 77. Physical Environment In Africa It is easy to forget about the trials and tribulations of the physical world because we are constantly being distracted by the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. Between rising skyscrapers, expanding cities, and growing populations many forget about the ground they walk on and how their actions impact the long–term use of the land we capitalize on every day. In Africa, the physical environment has a huge impact on what plants and vegetation grow throughout the continent, affecting how its inhabitants live their daily lives. It is through Africa's physical environment and climate variability that determines the continent's diverse vegetation species and drives local economies. Africa's Physical Environment Africa's physical environment is a vast piece of land due to several factors. A large reason as to why the continent is so large is because of the number of cratons that exist throughout the continent, which contain areas that are composed of ancient crystalline basement rock (Child, Lesson 2.1, 2017). Due to its long–dated history, Africa has a very complex geological makeup. Another contributor to this vast continent's physical environment is the impact of tectonic plates. Because the tectonic plate Africa sits on is relatively stationary and there has been no collision of neighboring plates, mountain chains have not formed. However, a geographical element that is well known due to the impact of continental plates is the formation of the Great Rift Valley (McKenna). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
