Compassion Fatigue Case Study
Finally the third hypothesis was that work drain and history of traumas would have a supportive
relationship with compassion fatigue and emotional self–awareness would have a negative
relationship with compassion fatigue. The third hypothesis is looking at feeling drained at work and
a person's own personal history of trauma would positively correlate with compassion fatigue and
that if a person had insight into their own emotional state that person would score lower on
compassion fatigue. The therapists sense of powerlessness (.32), work drain (.32), emotional self–
awareness (–.24), and personal trauma history(.23) greatly impacted Compassion Fatigue.
According to Killian (2008), the biggest factors to impact compassion satisfaction positively is an
individual's social support(.46), internal locus of control at work(.22) and negatively is work
hours(–.37). Meaning that the more social support people have outside of work would increase their
feeling of compassion satisfaction and belief that they have control over the outcome of their
experience also positively increases their compassion satisfaction. If a person is feeling powerless in
their job with an external locus of control, they will have a higher rate of compassion fatigue.

Those who have experienced a consumer passing away have reported more self–doubt, guilt or
helplessness due to having a more external locus of control. Finding a way to balance a caseload of
how many consumers someone is meeting with and how many breaks in–between can cause the
most influence when a person is feeling well–compensated; the belief that they are valued by the

Compassion International
According to World Bank, 700 million people around the globe, or 9.6 percent, or in poverty as of
2015 ("Quick Facts about Poverty"). The poverty line changes year to year as inflation and deflation

American adults on average spend or charge $114 a day, not including bills and automotive care

Compassion Fatigue In Nursing
Nurses often are labeled as caregivers. They start their careers with an overflowing jug of
compassion; however, each time they put their own emotions or problems aside to comfort others,
they pour a glass out of the jug and give it away. Often, nurses' jugs run on empty. Metaphorically
speaking, this scenario represents compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue plagues all specialties in
primary and acute care, and it can lead to serious ailments such as depression, anxiety, burn out, and
even self medicating with drugs (Shepard, 2013).
Compassion fatigue is a term that defines how nurses will often ignore their own emotions and
feelings in order to care for others. The term also defines the nurse that is worn down, angry,
distressed, and

Barbara Ascher's On Compassion
Compassion, though seemingly straight–forward, is actually a complex beast, springing from a
variety of sources, including some less than flattering ones. These sources can include pity, fear, and
self advancement, which are rarely associated with something as "good" as being compassionate.
However, in "On Compassion", by Barbara Ascher argues that compassion is something that must
be learned through experience, not something one is born knowing, by giving examples of the
actions of those who have enough towards those who do not, in order to stress the importance of
taking note of others and their situations. Often, people try to avoid those who are less fortunate.
People have a tendency to "look away" from those who have fallen on hard times, as though they are
not even there (Para. 2). People tend to look away from things that disgust them, pretending they do
not exist, and move on with their lives. In the case of the less fortunate, they do so to protect their
world of "cocktail party complaint[s]," a world in which they are perpetually victimized by life (12).
These people can only see what they feel is a great injustice done ... Show more content on

To see again would be to remind oneself of one's "own well–being and sanity," which is out of line
with the self centered worldview many cherish (11). To leave this worldview is to accept that others
really are less fortunate, and that one has little to complain about in comparison to these people. It
causes guilt, a feeling most strive to avoid, and forces people to step outside of their comfort zones
and into the real world. Ascher continues by saying we "protect ourselves" from these people, not
physically, though that does happen, but mentally (11). To let down one's guard, even for a second,
and recognize the less fortunate would be to break down one's self centered fortress, allowing
sympathy, and eventually guilt at one's complacence, to

Acceptance In 12 Angry Men By Reginald Rose's 12 Angry Men
Imagine living in a world where differences are celebrated and diversity can be seen everywhere you
go. The world would be a place where you would not have to be afraid to hide who you choose to
become, your opinions will not be casted aside despite it's not being what majority agreed upon, and
society would simply just be accepting and loving. However, reality is quite the opposite, for years
human beings had struggled with racism, discriminations, and accepting others different from
themselves. As shown in recent events, the Texas church shooting occurred due to an unknown
shooter opened fired during mass on November 5 because they did not approved of Christianity.
This event led to the death of 26 people, the event illustrates discrimination against one's religion.
From this it is safe to say that people should accept those different from themselves to an extent that
would benefits the society today; however, there are situations where acceptance is not an option
due to one's action causing harm to other. Acceptance allows society to be more just towards people
who have different opinions other than the majority and someone of a different race. In 12 Angry
Men written by Reginald Rose, due to Juror Eight showing acceptance and voiced a different
opinion than the rest of the jurors, justice was served for the wrongly accused boy. Juror Eight is
seen standing up for his different belief when he said,"It's not easy for me to raise my hand send a

Compassion Definition Essay
What is a compassion? Is that ordinary people could not have or achieve? I do not think so, because
I have a superpower, healing touch called compassion. This superpower makes me feel good and
fully human about me. It is like fresh air without which I can not live here on earth. I would not
believe anyone who said that oneself does not have any superpower. According to Sam Ferrigno
"Everyday Heroes:8 Real Super Powers Every Human Has (And Sometimes Takes For Granted)"
there are eight kinds of traits, superpowers that are present in humans. One of the trait is healing
touch, compassion. Compassion it is not necessary that oneself will give away everything he or she

his wound and blood away from his face. Surgeon placed few stitches on his upper lip. While I

The Most Meaningful Gifts In Chaim Potok's The Chosen
The Most Meaningful Gifts are Hidden in Plain Sight American singer and actress Ethel Waters
once said, "We are all gifted. That is our inheritance." Whenever people think of someone as gifted
they tend to think of superpower type qualities. The Chosen, a book written by Chaim Potok, depicts
several different characters pertaining different talents. Characters such as Reuven, Danny, or even
Mr. Malter all possess abilities that help them in life. The types of gifts displayed in the book are not
what people usually think of as special gifts, but a special talent can seem as little as forgiving easily
and genuinely caring for others well–being or as big as recalling information at a moments notice. In
The Chosen, characters such as Reuven, Danny, and Mr. Malter all demonstrate certain gifts that
they maintain. To begin with, Reuven Malter demonstrates many of his different types of gifts
throughout the story. Two of the key traits Reuven reveals are the gifts of compassion and the mind
for logic. In the beginning of the book Danny tries to kill Reuven by hitting him with a baseball,
however, he later comes and apologizes to him and Reuven forgives him (Potok, 70). Not everyone,
when provided with a chance, will forgive someone who wronged them. Instead pf clinging onto his
resentments Reuven graciously forgives Danny, an act that requires great compassion to fulfill.
Another example of Reuven's gifts is his ability to solve logic problems, "Well, they try to

My Mother, My Hero Essay
My Mother, My Hero In 1859 Henry Ward Beecher said, "the mother's heart is the child's
schoolroom." I believe that statement because of experiences I've had with my own mother. I have
learned more about life from her than from my 15 years of schooling. Over the last 20 years my
mother has taught me many valuable lessons just by being a living example of compassion,
thoughtfulness, and generosity. She is an angel that has protected and carried me throughout life. In
the book, One Day My Soul Just Opened Up, Iyanla Vanzant said, "a truly compassionate person is
one who can feel what you feel because they are one with you in mind, body, and spirit, not out of
obligation or a false sense of responsibility. A compassionate person is ... Show more content on

Besides being compassionate my mother is thoughtful. She stays at work late if someone needs help
with theirs. She brings my grandmother dinner and runs errands for her. She is always putting others
before herself. For instance, last year I began singing in the choir at Iowa State. It was really
important to me because singing has always been a passion of mine. She drove to Ames for every
single concert. It meant a lot to me to have her in the audience supporting me. This year I also
started singing in the choir at my church. I was really excited and nervous about singing the first
Sunday so few days before I was going to sing she gave me a beautiful necklace with a star pendant
on it. I remember her warm hug and her telling me good luck and that I was 'her star'. It touched me
that she took time out of her busy schedule to encourage and support things that she knew were
important to me. She could have just wished me well and enjoyed her few minutes of spare time, but
instead she put me first. The third aspect I admire in my mother is her generosity. She is always
buying things for others. We aren't a rich family by any means, but she is always giving. Just a few
weeks ago my mother's friend was talking about not being able to afford a new winter coat for her
son. That night my mother went out and bought him one. Then about a month ago my mother heard
about a woman who is a recovering drug addict.

Analysis Of Primary Colors Essay
Politics is a bloodsport, one big game of corruption, muckraking, prostitution, and defilement, which
is played by the politicians, the media, and the seemingly innocent public that tends to forget that
politicians are humans also, no better than the masses except for one thing, the ability to play the
game. Primary Colors by Anonymous portrays this fraudulent game perfectly, exhibiting all of the
dark aspects of a political campaign: from the vicious media in their pursuit of scandals, to the
traitorousness of opposing candidates to destroy each other, all the way to the secretive sexual
interactions taking place during the campaigning process. Yet in this vice–corrupted novel,
Anonymous also manages to let the human side of the tainted ... Show more content on

In all of his public appearances, Picker always seems to be speaking what is exactly on his mind––
just speaking the truth, and even when the reader discovers that he has been putting up a façade all
along, the fact that Picker admits to his conflicts and problems only re–emphasizes his nobleness.
One of the most important components to a political campaign is the voter, for no political candidate
can be elected without someone voting for them. The dedication of both candidates, Stanton and
Picker, to their voters is another aspect that accentuates their nobleness. Stanton is remarkable in his
devotion to the public; the ability to reach out and interact with the public and the power to help
them is the reason why he loves politics. While campaigning it is the people that need him, like
Danny Scanlon the crippled boy, the adult illiterates, or the unemployed in Portsmouth, that keep
Stanton going, for they "deserved a better country–and that was what this election had to be about"
(144). There is a truth to Stanton's promises, similar to the way he doesn't forget people's names and
the aspects of their personal lives, he also doesn't forget the promises he gives them in return for
their support. For example, he remembers the promise that he made to "Fat Willie" about having
him open a branch of his restaurant up in the capitol (214). But on the overall it is Stanton's genius
that allows the people to relate to him, he

Yannely Suero : A Short Story
Can you imagine what kind of life you would have had if the person who is your father today
rejected you and ran away every time he saw your face just because he did not want you to be born
in the first place? Meet Yannely Suero, the girl who was rejected before she was even born. Growing
up without a father was very common for children in Villa Flores which is a community in the
Dominican Republic. But Yannely's situation was not just her not having a father to provide her with
the basic needs that she needed, but it was beyond that. She had a father who did not want her and
even told her mother to get an abortion the second he found out she was pregnant. Yannely's father
was not around her mother before or even after she was born. When Yannely got a little bit older she
wanted to know her father, but she, later on, regrated even finding out who her father was because of
the way he treated her. It was too obvious that the father did not want her at all by ignoring her
knocking on the door, or the way he turned around and ran because he could not even look at her
face. This broke Yannely's heart but that was not the end of her journey. Through Compassion
International Yannely found a purpose and she was able to heal and feel loved again. Through a
sponsor who was like a grandmother to her, Yannely's life changed for good and she then focused on
pursuing her dream of becoming a doctor. She held no hate against her father because she decided

Compassion at Play
Are people born with a complete quandary when it comes to compassion or is it something that has
always been there? Barbara Lazear Ascher, born in 1946, writes, "On Compassion." Having lived in
New York City, Ascher is able to take first hand examples from the city to show the affection people
have towards each other. Ascher is able to illustrate that compassion is something that has to be
taught because of the adversity at people's heels by including tone, persuasive appeals, and the mode
of comparing and contrast in her essay, "On Compassion." The tone of Ascher's essay can best be
described as thoughtful and reflective. Ascher is able to achieve this tone in her quote, "He wears a

She has not only witnessed this once, but TWICE she has seen this woman feed the man. The
readers are able to trust that she witnessed these events herself because they are realistic events, and
happen in everyday life. Compassion is a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is
stricken by misfortune. Ascher appeals to pathos in her essay in order to compel the readers to feel
compassion towards the victims. She contributes to pathos in her quote, "The man's grin is less the
result of circumstance than dreams or madness" (46). The audience feels for this young man and the
tough "circumstances" he is going through. The man is dressed so poorly that he is being mistaken
as a mad man by the spectators. The readers instantly feel empathy for this man in the form of
compassion. Ascher appeals to logos in order to define compassion in her quote, "For the ancient
Greeks, drama taught and reinforced compassion within a society" (48). Ascher includes the real
facts about the Greeks in her essay. When she includes these facts, it enables the readers to validate
that compassion is something that is taught, whether it is through plays or having to see someone in
a worse condition than they are, compassion is still attained. Ascher utilizes examples in her essay,
"On Compassion" to show the pity people are taking on the ones who are in a painstaking position.

Speech On Pain And Indignation
In many ways, there has never been a better time to be alive. Violence plagues some corners of the
world, and too many still live under the grip of tyrannical regimes. And although all the world's
major faiths teach love, compassion and tolerance, unthinkable violence is being perpetrated in the
name of religion.
And yet, fewer among us are poor, fewer are hungry, fewer children are dying, and more men and
women can read than ever before. In many countries, recognition of women's and minority rights is
now the norm. There is still much work to do, of course, but there is hope and there is progress.
How strange, then, to see such anger and great discontent in some of the world's richest nations. In
the United States, Britain and across the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The problem is not a lack of material riches. It is the growing number of people who feel they are no
longer useful, no longer needed, no longer one with their societies.
In America today, compared with 50 years ago, three times as many working–age men are
completely outside the work force. This pattern is occurring throughout the developed world – and
the consequences are not merely economic. Feeling superfluous is a blow to the human spirit. It
leads to social isolation and emotional pain, and creates the conditions for negative emotions to take
root.
What can we do to help? The first answer is not systematic. It is personal. Everyone has something
valuable to share. We should start each day by consciously asking ourselves, "What can I do today
to appreciate the gifts that others offer me?" We need to make sure that global brotherhood and
oneness with others are not just abstract ideas that we profess, but personal commitments that we
mindfully put into practice.
Each of us has the responsibility to make this a habit. But those in positions of responsibility have a
special opportunity to expand inclusion and build societies that truly need

What Is Serving, Leading And Leading In Health Care
Serving, Following, and Leading in Health Care
Health care workers show many similarities on why they choose to enter the field on medicine. One
common factor that many share is their passion for "caring for others". Although Radiologic
technologist do not spend the amount of time with patients that nurses do, providing patients with
individualized patient care is a necessity for a hospital.
The compassion given and exuberated from health care workers contains benefits and risks. Many
times this compassion given often times results in compassion satisfaction. This results in the
caregiver feeling a sense of personal benefit because of their contributions to the patient. The risks

While in the workplace you will encounter different personalities, followers and leaders. Both of
these are vital to working and both are equally as important. A good follower is someone who shows
support towards the leader, challenges constructively the leader or group's behaviors or policies is
they threaten the common purpose, and takes a moral stand when warranted to prevent ethical
abuses. Followers also play a key role in critical thinking as they are termed the best critical thinkers
in a group. Being a follower requires a commitment to the group to contribute within a collaborative
environment. A leader, however, is a person that was a great follower for a very long period of time.
Through following they have learned how to be friendly, learn social skills, and how to handle tasks
and emotions. One vital trait that a leader must possess it trust. If a follower trusts a leader, then the
trust within the group will increase. Teamwork chemistry will rise and this will, in the end, create a
more efficient product. For a technologist, enforcing ALARA, demonstrating honesty and integrity,

The Six Core Elements Of Compassionate Care
The face of care giving and support is changing and this change enhances the way care is provided
whilst maintaining dignity, giving respects and compassion to people (NHS, 2012, Ford, 2017).
According to NHS (2012), due to progressive medical attention, people are now living longer
increasing the influx of older people with multiple complex needs. This then means "there is a
higher expectation of health care delivery and support". "Care, compassion and effective
communication are essential elements of nursing, which must be demonstrated by all nurses, nursing
students" and health care assistants (HCA's) in their role as care givers (Bloomfield. Pegram, 2015)
Compassionate care essentially forms the base in skills that are needed to demonstrate while giving

As nurses and health care assistants, care is the core of our business and it defines who we are and
what we stand for in our organisations. Care or help in care is when people are committed to give it
with compassion, competence, while using communication as the means towards improving the
health of communities and the people around us (NHS, 2012). There is a need for anybody who
works within the health sector in care giving to realize that the people, who receive care, expect it to
be right for them. Care should be given consistently, throughout every stage of their life whilst being
involved in the execution of care (Middleton, 2017).As carers we need courage to do the right thing
and be able to speak up when we have concerns for the people under our care. Courage is the ability
to have and exert personal strength and vision to innovate and embrace new ways of working whilst
meeting and supporting the challenges that are part and parcel of giving care (Ford, 2017, Forest,

The Theme Of Innocence And Innocence In Marigolds By...
A child holds innocence from a young age and does not understand the importance of having
compassion. As a child's innocence gradually fade away due to maturity, he or she transforms into a
compassionate person. In a coming of age short story, "Marigolds," Eugenia Collier writes about a
series of events where a young girl, named Lizabeth, develops into a compassionate person.
Lizabeth narrates these events in a flashback that involve the marigolds of her neighbor, Miss Lottie.
Miss Lottie's marigolds were the essence of hope in the midst of the town filled with dust and dirt.
The effect of economic struggles that the townspeople go through causes Lizabeth to destroy Miss
Lottie's marigolds. Throughout the short story, "Marigolds," the characterization ... Show more

Lizabeth does not care about Miss Lottie's feelings until after she destroyed the flowers. In effect,
having Lizabeth destroy the marigolds gives Lizabeth a lesson that would turn her into a
compassionate person. The night that the flowers became destroyed, Lizabeth had heard an
argument between her parents. Significantly, she did not like how her father was being weak while
her mother was being strong. Then, to let all her emotions out, she went to Miss Lottie's house to
destroy the marigolds. After her deed, Lizabeth calms down and realizes Miss Lottie saw the mess.
This moment was when Lizabeth realizes her destruction on the marigolds. The moment she saw
Miss Lottie and her expression of the mess, Lizabeth comes to a realization of why Miss Lottie
planted marigolds. Thinking back on her past, Lizabeth said "Yet, there are times when the image of
those passionate yellow mounds return with a painful poignancy. For one does not have to be
ignorant and poor to find that one's life is barrens the dusty yards of one's town. And I too have
planted marigolds" (30). Every time she remembers the marigolds and how they look she describes
them as, "the images of those passionate yellow mounds return with a painful poignancy." The
"passionate yellow mounds" is the description of marigolds and every time she remembers them,
she has a "painful poignancy" which can be indicated that the marigolds represent the lesson she has
learned and her experience to becoming a compassionate person. The end sentence of the quote
"And I too have planted marigolds" is the overall lesson that Lizabeth learns from her experience
that made her a compassionate person. Lizabeth learns why Miss Lottie had planted her marigolds,
but as a lesson, she realizes the meaning behind this. As a result of destroying the marigolds,

Marigolds Short Story
At a young age, children do not understand the importance of having compassion as for they hold
innocence within themselves. Growing up and maturing into an adult, children begin to
progressively lose their innocence as they become more of a compassionate person because one can
not have both innocence and compassion simultaneously. In fact, a coming of age short story called
"Marigolds" written by Eugenia Collier, tells about a young girl named Lizabeth who grows up to
become a compassionate person. For the most part, Lizabeth tells her childhood experience in a
flashback on how she mostly remembers Miss Lottie's marigolds. Ultimately, Lizabeth decides to
destroy Miss Lottie's marigolds out of anger because she hears about her parent's economic
struggles. Shortly after Lizabeth realizes what she had done, she realizes the meaning of why Miss
Lottie plants the marigolds. Throughout the short story, "Marigolds," the characterization of
Lizabeth helps develop the author's argument that one can not have both compassion and innocence.
The three events that show this is, when Lizabeth hesitates before throwing the rocks at the
marigolds, hearing the sounds of her father's sorrowful cries, and eliminating Miss Lottie's
marigolds. Collier's argument in "Marigolds" was that one cannot have both compassion and
innocence and this is revealed through the event where Lizabeth decides to throw rocks at the
marigolds. Her character develops to becoming a compassionate person

Analysis Of Upton Sinclair's The Jungle And The Harvest...
Change is one of the most difficult things to do, it is always difficult to find what to change let alone
how to change. However, one of the key messages a writer can convey to an audience is human
compassion or empathy, to inspire action or change, and to bring about a deeper understanding of
the world. Both writer Upton Sinclair's fiction writing "The Jungle" and the non–fiction writing
"The Harvest Gypsies" by John Steinbeck inform the reader of the difficulties faced by immigrants
and migrant workers. However while the author of "The Jungle", Upton Sinclair, uses descriptive
details that show the plight of the immigrants, it is the deeper understanding of the difficulties faced
from the families in John Steinbeck's "The Harvest Gypsies" that are more efficacious in evoking
compassion and inspiring change.
In 1906 Upton Sinclair worked side by side with immigrants in the meatpacking industry
endeavoring to reveal what genuinely goes on within the factory walls. While doing so, Upton
Sinclair uses details that evoke compassion while bringing out a deeper understanding of their
world. In the fictional writing The Jungle, the author Upton Sinclair uses details such as "ate as
much raw blood as food", "mile after mile" and describes the immigrant's journey as an endless vista
of pain and uncleanliness. Sinclair describes the journey of the immigrants as a journey of endless
suffering. It is the amount of suffering that the immigrants go through that evoke compassion while

subscales were measured using the Professional Quality of Life, using ProQOL R–IV instrument

concluded that recognising the signs and symptoms, and identifying best practice interventions and
raising awareness, will lead to the development of ongoing support programs for hospital nurses
(Hopper, et al., 2010, p. 427). Longitudinal data was collected to determine the efficacy of resilience

Compassion Fatigue : Symptoms And Treatment
Compassion Fatigue
Cynthia Young
University of St. Mary
Compassion Fatigue Two hours until shift change and Sally Smith, RN was looking forward to
going home and putting her aching legs up on the ottoman and drinking an ice cold Coke. She was
thinking to herself that the patients were so needy all the time, she felt she gave them all she had and
still all she had was not enough. All Sally heard was "get me this" and "get me that"...
"I can't get out of here soon enough, we never have enough staff and nobody listens to us" Sally told
the nurse next to her in the locker room when it was finally time to go home. "I feel like I never get
anytime to myself any more" she said as the elevator door opened and she and her peer made their
way to the parking deck. Sally called "see you tomorrow; I must be crazy to keep coming back
here!" The phrase compassion fatigue was initially identified by C. Joinson in 1992 while doing

Joinson's work identified behaviors in emergency room nurses that became identified as compassion
fatigue. Symptoms of compassion fatigue include "chronic fatigue, irritability, dread going to work,
aggravation of physical ailments and a lack of joy in

Write An Essay On Compassion International
Compassion International is a NGO that works to "release children from poverty in Jesus' name".
They explain their mission as follows:
"In response to the Great Commission, Compassion International exists as an advocate for children,
to release them from their spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enable them to
become responsible and fulfilled Christian adults." (http://www.compassion.com/mission–
statement.htm)
They focus their work on behalf of the human rights of children and explain poverty using the "hub–
and–spoke" analogy as to the causes of poverty, including human rights violations. If poverty were
the hub of a wheel, the many spokes, or causes, of poverty would include social, educational,

Often from prenatal care right up to the support and development of "qualified young adults" the
group provides the means to feed, protect, and develop the well–being of a child via Child
Sponsorship through many volunteers across the world, to personal and individualized support of
growing children according to their age, gender, culture, and more.
Through Compassion International's sponsorship program, there have been many benefits to
children worldwide. A study conducted in 2008 found in regards to education, on average 50–80%
of child sponsors were more likely to graduate from college, 14–18% were more likely to attain a
salaried employment, and 30–75% were more likely to become community leaders.
The lack of clean water has been a regular challenge to Compassion International. According to their
website, "2.4 billion people do not have adequate sanitation facilities" and "748 million people do
not have access to clean water" (https://magazine.compassion.com/water–2/) They strive to improve
these conditions by educating children how to identify and avoid playing in dirty water. Through
their Compassion fund they also "build wells and other safe–water sources in

Jen Neff Research Paper
Growing up, those around me might have come to the conclusion that I was spoiled by my parents.
Now I agree, they help me out when needed, take me shopping every once in a while, and make sure
I don't hit rock bottom; however, I have always felt their love to be conditional. As long as I get
good grades, follow the rules, and clean my room, then I get an "I am so proud of you" speech at the
end of the day. My parents are very conservative, not only did I grow up in the church, I also
attended a Christian school since pre–school all the way to my senior year in high school. During
those 15 years of my life, it was continually repeated to "love one another," and "love your enemy".
I was always taught how to love other people, yet was never shown ... Show more content on

Usually in my life I will experience a few negative emotions and thoughts and then briefly affirm
that what I am believing is untrue and then switch my mind to something different. I also have
journals that I will write in every once in a while, but it isn't something I use for overcoming
negative emotions. Coming from a conservative, religious family I have always heard that
meditation is bad. While Neff practices Buddhist meditation and uses some of these ideas in her
programs to teach self–compassion, after listening to one of the meditation podcasts, I can see the
benefit. The meditation practices she developed helps one relax, become more self–aware, and
focused on thoughts of love and compassion not only towards oneself but also towards others.
Another aspect that I had not taken into consideration is the difference between self–compassion and
self–esteem. As Neff explains, self–esteem is basically one's perceived value and worth; however, it
is contingent on how one is compared to another. I have never looked at self–esteem being a
problematic, negative term, now I understand the aspects of it that can be detrimental to ones well–
being. Always striving to have high self–esteem leads us to put other people down in the process, it
also insinuates that we have to be perfect and better to be worthy, which is the opposite of what
Neff's concept of self–compassion entails. Our society thrives on the idea that one has to be better
than their counterpart, what we lack is this idea of self–compassion. Therefore, I think it would be
very beneficial to teach self–compassion in children; this may lead to an overall more
compassionate generation that flourishes on how we can help each other and ourselves

My Sister, My Heroine
My Sister, My Heroine "Buck up Buttercup," (Wood). Something I have been told my whole life,
and have recently learned to appreciate. My sister, Tanya Jai Peterson Wood, has said to me to
"Buck up Buttercup" many times under a vast variety of circumstances, to the point where I say it to
others, and think it even when TJ is not around. TJ has made the biggest difference in my life, and is
my heroine. I chose TJ to be my heroine because she is the most real to me; she has most changed
my life and possesses qualities I can only hope to have. TJ has changed my life for the better and has
really strengthened me. TJ is my heroine because she is humble, compassionate, patient, and
selfless. When I was three years old, TJ and a few of her friends went rollerblading and decided to
push me along with them in a stroller. TJ let one of her friend's push me and we came close to a
canal, TJ's friend lost control and ended up pushing me into the canal. TJ immediately started to take
off her rollerblades and her friends, screaming, attracted the attention of a car. The car pulled over, a
man got out and stopped TJ, and the man pulled me out. Now, TJ could have decided not to tell my
parents what happened, but she was humble enough to tell them. She had to accept the consequences
of what happened, and that is what a good hero or heroine is to me. They are humble, and willing to
take responsibility for their mistakes, when made. A good hero or heroine is not afraid of making
mistakes because they know that if a mistake is made, then they will do everything in their power to
fix it. TJ is ten years older than I am, but she was always compassionate and kind enough to let me
be a part of her life. She always let me be on her team when her friends would come over to play
games, she would rarely cast me away or tell me to leave her alone. When I was in fifth grade I ran
for student council. I spent much time writing my speech, with frequent help from TJ. I was so
proud of my speech, and was miserable when I didn't win. TJ was my sole comfort, and
compassionately said to me, "Buck up Buttercup," (Wood). "Buck up Buttercup" a phrase that TJ
has used throughout my life that is almost always used compassionately. TJ would not be

The Funny Thing About Adversity By David Desteno
The Funny Thing About Adversity Recently, I was reading an article that is called "The Funny Thing
About Adversity" which is written by David DeSteno who is a psychology professor at Northeastern
University. DeSteno's purpose is to convince the reader that experiencing hardship makes a person
sympathetic or unsympathetic depending on the case of hardship that person has experienced, and
being a compassionate does not occur by chance. DeSteno makes two primary claims: one is by
illustrating that if an individual has lived through unpleasant events, that person will be familiar with
the difficult situations involved, which would lead a person to be sympathetic. The second claim is
that it is incorrect to believe if someone has experienced the same struggle that you experienced, he
might not lend a hand due to the fact that there is a glitch in the human's mind that makes people
forget about their own past hardships. Initially, DeSteno begins his argument by providing the
opposite of his claim, which is an excellent method to persuade his readers. Since, he uses scientific
studies that demonstrate adversity is linked to many types of negative mental outcomes as
nervousness and unhappiness. Then DeSteno smartly shifts to support his claim by trying his best to
argue the scientific studies' outcomes, by referring to the result of past real event, as the collapse of
the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear–powered plant within Japan, where people even in the middle of

Night Reflection
After going through a traumatic event, we usually gain a hatred for the person(s) that may have
caused it, or acted the events out. It changes us as a person and affects our whole well–being,
sometimes transferring who we used to be, maybe even making less compassionate and changing
our outlook of the world. In Elie Wiesel's, Night, we watch as Eliezer goes through brutal events and
attempts to remain faithful to God and his Father, and he only slightly succumbs to the lack of
compassion of the other prisoners, towards the end, as he loses hope but soon regains it after he is
saved. Before leaving his home, Eliezer was a very religiously devoted boy, even going against his
father's wishes and studying Jewish oral law with a pauper, Moshe. "One evening, I told him how
unhappy I was not to be able to find in Sighet a master to teach me the Zohar...And Moishe the
Beadle, the poorest of the poor in Sighet, spoke to me for hours on end about the Kabbalah's
revelations and its mysteries, thus began my initiation" (Night 4). Eliezer's father had told him he
was simply not old enough the study the Zohar, but he knew deep down that he was ready and found
his own master to help him with his studies, showing his faithfulness in his religion. He was also
emotionally attached to his faith, as he was questioned whenever he would cry during his prayers.
Later in the book, after being in the camp for a while, a questioning of his religious faith comes into
play, "Never shall I forgot those

For example, he remembers the promise that he made to "Fat Willie" about having him open a

the people to relate to him, he lets them know that he associates with the problems they have and
that he really cares about those problems (44), that is a noteworthy feature of his. With Freddy
Picker, it is his honesty to the voters––to the American public, admitting the mistakes he had made

what highlights his nobleness and shows how dedicated he is to the masses. The truism of the

addiction to the political game as well as drugs made him quit the first time in 1978, and it is his

Christians Battle Against Poverty Essay examples
Let's look at some cold hard facts in the world surrounding us. Many of us live in comfortable lives–
plenty of food, a car for every member of the household, a roof over our heads, parents with steady
jobs, etc. Thus, America's comfortable bubble is formed. That is a fact, right? Well since we all
know about America, we should take a step outside of that cozy bubble around us and look at the
rest of the world. We will soon see the reality of the world surrounding us. So many of us know the
typical stereotypes such as starving children in Africa, or the overworked children of China, or even

ministry became a corporation that was later named Compassion. Compassion grew and by the mid

million children in 26 developing countries are sponsored through Compassion.
How It Works Reverend Everett Swanson did more than respond individually to the morbid reality
of worldwide poverty, he also created a way for us to respond easily by sponsoring a child. it would
not be realistic to say that every one of us must travel to Kenya to provide a meal for a starving
child, or to drive to Mexico to teach an illiterate teenager how to read and write. Nevertheless, we
can show compassion to those affected by poverty through sponsoring a child.

The Concept Of Compassion By Using Walker And Avant's (...
The concept compassion is heart felt and used by many to cover a subjective feeling. Compassion is
experienced by people across the world in healthcare and in many aspects of life. It is well known in
many disciplines, and has been deemed a quality in which nurses possess in their profession. The
idea is one that is familiarized by many, but is not clearly defined in nursing education or practice
but has been the foundation regarding the high–quality of care nurses are thought to contribute to the
medical world. The purpose of this concept analysis is to understand the experience of compassion.
By using Walker and Avant's (2011) eight–step guideline for concept analysis on compassion, this
analysis will provide examples and definitions resulting in an explanation of the importance of the
concept related to nursing practice. To gain a better overview of the concept compassion, an
extensive search using EBSCOhost Academic Search Elite online database was used. The
Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Medline, PubMed, and
Cochrane Library databases were searched using compassion, empathy, sympathy, and compassion

religion to help define compassion for this concept analysis. In this concept analysis, compassion
will be defined using ideas from many historical views and taking the key concepts from an array of
disciplines as well as expanding on the

A Reflection On The 's ' The Vision Of Happiness
It's been said that "If the immediate and direct purpose of our life is not suffering then our existence
is the most ill–adapted to its purpose in the world" . Obviously, that person was not Aristotle (unless
the entirety of Nichomachean Ethics utilizes a tone of obfuscated sarcasm typically reserved for
internet forums or pretentious asides) as he posits happiness as the ultimate human end, and
contemplation the best way of achieving it. However, both the vision of happiness he puts forth, as
well as the means for achieving it, differ widely from the typical semantics held throughout
antiquity and modernity by the listless majority. Although rather than simply explain his thought, I
intend to demonstrate how one comes to such conclusions, and so we must return to the initial
Germanic dissension. Initially, it seems difficult to argue with such an assertion. Within humanity
alone, there exists a constancy of suffering, which resonates with greater magnitude and frequency
then any other state of being. As all else decays, human suffering endures with adamant universality,
gleaming with such brightness that it outshines all other potential ends (apart from, perhaps, the
biological imperatives of preservation and procreation). Yet suffering as an end in itself seems so
morbidly facetious that it is overlooked by the willfully ignorant and the optimistically rational alike

a merciless event, it is selfish without even realizing it. Doing good deeds does not make us a good
individual, it just makes us decent. The benefits of generosity for both our physical and mental
health are outstanding. generosity reduces stress, supports one's physical health, enhances one's
sense of purpose, and helps fight depression, it has also been shown to increase one's lifespan
because all the health benefits of not being stressed. You may think you are being selfless, but you
are also benefiting yourself in a way you did not know about. Developing compassion increases our
happiness. In an experiment published in Science by Harvard Business School professor Michael
Norton, they gave money to; two sets of groups, one that spent money on themselves and the other
spent it on other people. It was found that the people who bought presents for others showed an
increase in happiness, this was even the case with children giving treats to others. We are using an
unselfish event and making for an ego boost. However, by doing so we need to become conscious of
the world around us. As we develop more of an awareness we become more concerned about what is
going on around us. Therefore, we carry guilt for simple things like throwing a cigarette on the
ground, we may feel guilty for a bit, but we can always change our actions and help the world
around us. Compassion is simple and uses common sense, it is humble and straightforward. Being
compassionate is difficult for those who

Rhetorical Analysis Of `` What The Hell Is Water `` By...
Famed American author David Foster Wallace gave a commencement speech to Kenyon College's
graduating class of 2005. Most commencement speeches focus on graduates' accomplishments as
well as give general life advice. Wallace's presentation follows this pattern at first, congratulating
the students on getting their diplomas. However, most of his speech is dedicated to the idea of
thinking beyond ourselves. Throughout the speech, Wallace argues we should live with empathy
through his use of humor and appeals to the audience's empathy. The introduction quickly
introduces the humorous tone found throughout the piece with his use of anecdotes. In the opening
anecdote, two young fish fail to recognize that they are surrounded by water. By juxtaposing the
academic setting with the fish exclaiming "what the hell is water?" the speaker creates humor with
the fish's unexpected colloquialism. Furthermore, Wallace connects the irony of the fish anecdote
with the that of most adults, who are unable to see what really matters in life just as the fish can not
see the water that encompasses them. The speaker follows this story with another about an atheist
and a theist arguing about the existence of God. By refusing to see the other's perspective, Wallace
shows the humor in their rigid belief systems. The speaker also pokes fun at his liberal arts audience
by asking why they accept both men's position without questioning their rationale for doing so. By
doing so, Wallace displays audience

Figley's Model Of The Compassion Fatigue Process
Lipchick (2002), describes the therapist–client relationship as a structure coupling between to
unique human beings in complementary roles. In a healthcare context, Sabo (2006) states that
empathy and compassion are critical aspects involved in understanding the clients' needs to create a
therapeutic relationship between client and nurse. The integration of the concepts of compassion and
empathy could become a negative facilitator of 'the cost of caring for others' later described as
Compassion Fatigue (CF) (Figley, 1995). The definition is contested, though; the first definition was
proposed by Joinson (1992) characterising CF as a unique form of burnout that nurses experience
because of exhaustion. Coetzee and Klopper (2010) explain that CF is a concept established in
relation to the burnout of nurses'. Their duty to tend to sick and traumatised patients exposes them to
pain and suffering daily, and thus many lose their ability to nurture. Supported by Pack and Roberts
(2012), CF occurs when individuals are unable to continue bearing the trauma of others,
consequently leading to a significant reduction in wellbeing and work capacity. Whilst CF has
regularly been observed in a healthcare environment, no such research has been conducted in a sport
and exercise context.
Figley's (2002) model of the Compassion Fatigue Process enables a further understanding of the
factors contributing to CF and some key terms surrounding it. The model is based on assumptions

Compassion, Its Importance And Effects Of Health Care
Compassion
The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate an understanding of compassion, its importance and
effects in health care.
Compassion is an interesting topic and very important element within nursing (Dietze and Orb
2000). Involving patients, understanding their situation and being close to them rather than seeing
them as a medical condition or procedure.
Main
In all aspects of nursing it is important that nurses are able to provide care with compassion. As it
impels and empowers nurses to not only acknowledge but act (Schantz 2007). This is also supported
by Bradshaw (2011) who highlighted that compassion is not only in words but also in action.
The NMC Code (2015) guidelines suggest that compassionate care is prioritising ... Show more

Using this particular analogy, compassion should be given to all patients young or elderly, whether
their illness is long term or short term.
Compassion helps build a patient 's confidence (Welford, 2012) and trust in the nurse through
effective communication and acknowledges that they are not suffering alone. Therefore, nurses
ought to be friendly, caring and also show genuine interest in their patients.
In mental health nursing this is shown by not stereotyping when caring for certain types of patients
i.e. patients who have been referred to a hospital through the criminal justice system. Accepting
patients for who they are, whilst acting as a sympathetic listener. And, appreciating how they feel in
difficult times, demonstrates compassion and professionalism.
Though benevolence is at the heart of the nursing profession, over time nurses develop compassion
fatigue. Dulmus & Sowers (2012) expresses this as a form of working and caring very much and not
acknowledging one 's personal needs. Nurses tend to develop dissatisfaction and work–related
stress, due to exhaustion in their profession.
It is an unrealistic expectation for nurses to nurses to not be affected when immersed in suffering
and loss daily. Remen (2006) described this as expecting to be able to walk through water without
getting wet.
Within health organisations there are ways compassion fatigue is avoided such as clinical
supervision, peer to peer support and professional

Jimmy Valentine Analysis
If a person cannot change their morals, then no one can change. Jimmy Valentine was a burglar that
had just gotten out of jail for cracking safes. Jimmy was a good guy at heart but made some bad
decisions. Jimmy moved to Elmore where he opened a shoe store, and met Annabel his fiance.
Jimmy Valentine was trying to live a moral life because he was honest, compassionate, and
responsible.
First, Jimmy Valentine was trying to live a moral life by showing his honesty. Jimmy showed his
honesty by agreeing to go with Ben Spencer after he cracked open the safe. Jimmy knew that Ben
had been watching him, and instead of running after he cracked the safe he went to Ben as if he was
going to take him back to jail. Although, Ben gave him another chance to live a moral life, the fact
he went straight to Ben shows honesty. Also, Jimmy showed his honesty by not robbing Annabels

Jimmy showed his responsibility by opening a shoe store in Elmore. Jimmy needed something to do

respected him. "Jimmy stuffed it into his vest–pocket, threw off his coat and pulled up his shirt–
sleeves. With that act Ralph D. Spencer passed away and Jimmy Valentine took his place" (Henry).
It was Jimmy's responsibility to open the safe to save Agatha. Jimmy had to try his best to open the
safe because he was the only one there that knew how to open it. Another reason Jimmy showed his
responsibility was by planning to move west with Annabel and keep her safe. Jimmy knew it was his
responsibility to protect Annabel, and that mindset helped him live a moral life. Jimmy Valentine

Phileo And Me Reflection
The concept I chose to critically reflect on is "Compassion and Caring" and the aesthetic piece that I

relationship with each other resembles this concept. In this paper, I will define and analyze
Compassion and Care and it's significance to my video called, "Phileo & Me". Compassion is more
than just relieving a patient's suffering but is an essence to enter a patient's experience and therefore
helps to achieve the best optimal holistic care (Von Dietze & Orb, 2000). According to Dewar

another person's shoes implies empathy and the ability to practice this trait in our professions will
improve compassionate care (Bramley & Matiti, 2014). In my film, it shows that studying does take
a large portion of my day and is stressful, but Phileo shows compassion by understanding my
feelings, my emotions, and my position as a student and keeps me company through it all. My
expression in the beginning of studying is downcast but after being supported and encouraged by
Phileo, and is shown in our facial expressions and even in the way I was hugging tightly (Rillera,

understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern.
Beautiful people do not just happen" (Elisabeth Kubler–Ross). Compassion, gentleness, and a deep
loving concern make mankind beautiful, but it also makes it defenseless . When one has concern for
the sufferings or misfortunes of others, he takes sacrifices, risks, and lives with uncertainty. When
man is compassionate, he lives a vulnerable life. Love and compassion bring out the beauty in
mankind, but they can also bring out its weaknesses. Because of man's compassion, he ... Show

In Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea, Manolin and Santiago went out fishing together
every day, but they never caught any fish. Manolin's parents told him he wasn't allowed to fish with
Santiago anymore because of his constant "bad luck." Manolin was distressed, and he still visited
Santiago every day. One day Santiago went far out to sea on his own to catch a marlin. He went on a
terrible journey which had an even more dreadful outcome. Santiago caught the marlin, but had to
return home empty handed because sharks tore his fish to pieces. When Manolin saw Santiago had
returned, he was overjoyed to see that he was still alive. "The boy saw that Santiago was breathing
and then he saw the old man's hands and he started to cry. He went out very quietly to go bring some
coffee and all the way down the road he was crying" (Hemingway 122). Manolin felt compassion
for Santiago because he had to embark on a solitary, godawful journey. Manolin felt very close to
Santiago, and he had feared that he had passed away at sea. Once Manolin discovered Santiago
survived, he was so relieved that he burst into tears. This all goes to show how vulnerable Manolin
was because of his compassion for Santiago. In The Bible, Jesus tells a parable about a Good
Samaritan. In it, a man is mugged and left to die on the side of a road. "A man was going down from
Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him,

Compassion In Thank You, MaAm By Langston Hughes
"Compassionate people are geniuses in the art of living, more necessary to the dignity, security, and
joy of humanity than the discoveries of knowledge." –– Albert Einstein
Everyone has difficulties and tragedies in life, some more than others. Though when people show
compassion, it makes your spirits rise and make your challenges more bearable. In the short story,
"Thank you, Ma'am" by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, a woman whose
purse has been an attempted target by a boy, shows the theme of compassion with an overflowing
amount of it. The boy, Roger, learns throughout the story that compassion is very important, and his
true personality is revealed by some woman he doesn't even know. At the beginning of "Thank you,
Ma'am," we see how just how compassionate Mrs. Jones really is. The moment she meets Roger,
she tells the boy to wash his face. "Least I can do is wash your face. Are you hungry?" This might
not seem like a very compassionate thing to do at first, however, she doesn't even know the boy, yet
she has enough compassion to make sure he is clean. Then, she takes the boy inside of her house! In
addition, the boy, Roger asks, "You going to take me to jail?" But Mrs. Jones doesn't. Maybe she
sees that Roger is really a good boy inside, so she shows compassion to bring out his true kindness.
This makes me think that he was probably trying to steal because he had to. And when Mrs. Jones
asked him if he had anyone at home, he said, "No'm." Mrs.

Compassion Fatigue Case Study

  • 1. Compassion Fatigue Case Study Finally the third hypothesis was that work drain and history of traumas would have a supportive relationship with compassion fatigue and emotional self–awareness would have a negative relationship with compassion fatigue. The third hypothesis is looking at feeling drained at work and a person's own personal history of trauma would positively correlate with compassion fatigue and that if a person had insight into their own emotional state that person would score lower on compassion fatigue. The therapists sense of powerlessness (.32), work drain (.32), emotional self– awareness (–.24), and personal trauma history(.23) greatly impacted Compassion Fatigue. According to Killian (2008), the biggest factors to impact compassion satisfaction positively is an individual's social support(.46), internal locus of control at work(.22) and negatively is work hours(–.37). Meaning that the more social support people have outside of work would increase their feeling of compassion satisfaction and belief that they have control over the outcome of their experience also positively increases their compassion satisfaction. If a person is feeling powerless in their job with an external locus of control, they will have a higher rate of compassion fatigue. Looking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. Compassion Fatigue In Nursing Nurses often are labeled as caregivers. They start their careers with an overflowing jug of compassion; however, each time they put their own emotions or problems aside to comfort others, they pour a glass out of the jug and give it away. Often, nurses' jugs run on empty. Metaphorically speaking, this scenario represents compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue plagues all specialties in primary and acute care, and it can lead to serious ailments such as depression, anxiety, burn out, and even self medicating with drugs (Shepard, 2013). Compassion fatigue is a term that defines how nurses will often ignore their own emotions and feelings in order to care for others. The term also defines the nurse that is worn down, angry, distressed, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Barbara Ascher's On Compassion Compassion, though seemingly straight–forward, is actually a complex beast, springing from a variety of sources, including some less than flattering ones. These sources can include pity, fear, and self advancement, which are rarely associated with something as "good" as being compassionate. However, in "On Compassion", by Barbara Ascher argues that compassion is something that must be learned through experience, not something one is born knowing, by giving examples of the actions of those who have enough towards those who do not, in order to stress the importance of taking note of others and their situations. Often, people try to avoid those who are less fortunate. People have a tendency to "look away" from those who have fallen on hard times, as though they are not even there (Para. 2). People tend to look away from things that disgust them, pretending they do not exist, and move on with their lives. In the case of the less fortunate, they do so to protect their world of "cocktail party complaint[s]," a world in which they are perpetually victimized by life (12). These people can only see what they feel is a great injustice done ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To see again would be to remind oneself of one's "own well–being and sanity," which is out of line with the self centered worldview many cherish (11). To leave this worldview is to accept that others really are less fortunate, and that one has little to complain about in comparison to these people. It causes guilt, a feeling most strive to avoid, and forces people to step outside of their comfort zones and into the real world. Ascher continues by saying we "protect ourselves" from these people, not physically, though that does happen, but mentally (11). To let down one's guard, even for a second, and recognize the less fortunate would be to break down one's self centered fortress, allowing sympathy, and eventually guilt at one's complacence, to ... • 9. Acceptance In 12 Angry Men By Reginald Rose's 12 Angry Men Imagine living in a world where differences are celebrated and diversity can be seen everywhere you go. The world would be a place where you would not have to be afraid to hide who you choose to become, your opinions will not be casted aside despite it's not being what majority agreed upon, and society would simply just be accepting and loving. However, reality is quite the opposite, for years human beings had struggled with racism, discriminations, and accepting others different from themselves. As shown in recent events, the Texas church shooting occurred due to an unknown shooter opened fired during mass on November 5 because they did not approved of Christianity. This event led to the death of 26 people, the event illustrates discrimination against one's religion. From this it is safe to say that people should accept those different from themselves to an extent that would benefits the society today; however, there are situations where acceptance is not an option due to one's action causing harm to other. Acceptance allows society to be more just towards people who have different opinions other than the majority and someone of a different race. In 12 Angry Men written by Reginald Rose, due to Juror Eight showing acceptance and voiced a different opinion than the rest of the jurors, justice was served for the wrongly accused boy. Juror Eight is seen standing up for his different belief when he said,"It's not easy for me to raise my hand send a boy off to die without ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Compassion Definition Essay What is a compassion? Is that ordinary people could not have or achieve? I do not think so, because I have a superpower, healing touch called compassion. This superpower makes me feel good and fully human about me. It is like fresh air without which I can not live here on earth. I would not believe anyone who said that oneself does not have any superpower. According to Sam Ferrigno "Everyday Heroes:8 Real Super Powers Every Human Has (And Sometimes Takes For Granted)" there are eight kinds of traits, superpowers that are present in humans. One of the trait is healing touch, compassion. • 13. The Most Meaningful Gifts In Chaim Potok's The Chosen The Most Meaningful Gifts are Hidden in Plain Sight American singer and actress Ethel Waters once said, "We are all gifted. That is our inheritance." Whenever people think of someone as gifted they tend to think of superpower type qualities. The Chosen, a book written by Chaim Potok, depicts several different characters pertaining different talents. Characters such as Reuven, Danny, or even Mr. Malter all possess abilities that help them in life. The types of gifts displayed in the book are not what people usually think of as special gifts, but a special talent can seem as little as forgiving easily and genuinely caring for others well–being or as big as recalling information at a moments notice. In The Chosen, characters such as Reuven, Danny, and Mr. Malter all demonstrate certain gifts that they maintain. To begin with, Reuven Malter demonstrates many of his different types of gifts throughout the story. Two of the key traits Reuven reveals are the gifts of compassion and the mind for logic. In the beginning of the book Danny tries to kill Reuven by hitting him with a baseball, however, he later comes and apologizes to him and Reuven forgives him (Potok, 70). Not everyone, when provided with a chance, will forgive someone who wronged them. Instead pf clinging onto his resentments Reuven graciously forgives Danny, an act that requires great compassion to fulfill. Another example of Reuven's gifts is his ability to solve logic problems, "Well, they try to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. My Mother, My Hero Essay My Mother, My Hero In 1859 Henry Ward Beecher said, "the mother's heart is the child's schoolroom." I believe that statement because of experiences I've had with my own mother. I have learned more about life from her than from my 15 years of schooling. Over the last 20 years my mother has taught me many valuable lessons just by being a living example of compassion, thoughtfulness, and generosity. She is an angel that has protected and carried me throughout life. In the book, One Day My Soul Just Opened Up, Iyanla Vanzant said, "a truly compassionate person is one who can feel what you feel because they are one with you in mind, body, and spirit, not out of obligation or a false sense of responsibility. A compassionate person is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Besides being compassionate my mother is thoughtful. She stays at work late if someone needs help with theirs. She brings my grandmother dinner and runs errands for her. She is always putting others before herself. For instance, last year I began singing in the choir at Iowa State. It was really important to me because singing has always been a passion of mine. She drove to Ames for every single concert. It meant a lot to me to have her in the audience supporting me. This year I also started singing in the choir at my church. I was really excited and nervous about singing the first Sunday so few days before I was going to sing she gave me a beautiful necklace with a star pendant on it. I remember her warm hug and her telling me good luck and that I was 'her star'. It touched me that she took time out of her busy schedule to encourage and support things that she knew were important to me. She could have just wished me well and enjoyed her few minutes of spare time, but instead she put me first. The third aspect I admire in my mother is her generosity. She is always buying things for others. We aren't a rich family by any means, but she is always giving. Primary Colors by Anonymous portrays this fraudulent game perfectly, exhibiting all of the dark aspects of a political campaign: from the vicious media in their pursuit of scandals, to the traitorousness of opposing candidates to destroy each other, all the way to the secretive sexual interactions taking place during the campaigning process. In all of his public appearances, Picker always seems to be speaking what is exactly on his mind–– just speaking the truth, and even when the reader discovers that he has been putting up a façade all along, the fact that Picker admits to his conflicts and problems only re–emphasizes his nobleness. One of the most important components to a political campaign is the voter, for no political candidate can be elected without someone voting for them. The dedication of both candidates, Stanton and Picker, to their voters is another aspect that accentuates their nobleness. Stanton is remarkable in his devotion to the public; the ability to reach out and interact with the public and the power to help them is the reason why he loves politics. While campaigning it is the people that need him, like Danny Scanlon the crippled boy, the adult illiterates, or the unemployed in Portsmouth, that keep Stanton going, for they "deserved a better country–and that was what this election had to be about" (144). There is a truth to Stanton's promises, similar to the way he doesn't forget people's names and the aspects of their personal lives, he also doesn't forget the promises he gives them in return for their support. For example, he remembers the promise that he made to "Fat Willie" about having him open a branch of his restaurant up in the capitol (214). Meet Yannely Suero, the girl who was rejected before she was even born. Growing up without a father was very common for children in Villa Flores which is a community in the Dominican Republic. When Yannely got a little bit older she wanted to know her father, but she, later on, regrated even finding out who her father was because of the way he treated her. • 21. On Compassion Analysis Essay Compassion at Play Are people born with a complete quandary when it comes to compassion or is it something that has always been there? Barbara Lazear Ascher, born in 1946, writes, "On Compassion." Having lived in New York City, Ascher is able to take first hand examples from the city to show the affection people have towards each other. Ascher is able to illustrate that compassion is something that has to be taught because of the adversity at people's heels by including tone, persuasive appeals, and the mode of comparing and contrast in her essay, "On Compassion." The tone of Ascher's essay can best be described as thoughtful and reflective. Ascher is able to achieve this tone in her quote, "He wears a stained blanket pulled down to his ... The readers are able to trust that she witnessed these events herself because they are realistic events, and happen in everyday life. Compassion is a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune. Ascher appeals to pathos in her essay in order to compel the readers to feel compassion towards the victims. She contributes to pathos in her quote, "The man's grin is less the result of circumstance than dreams or madness" (46). The audience feels for this young man and the tough "circumstances" he is going through. The man is dressed so poorly that he is being mistaken as a mad man by the spectators. The readers instantly feel empathy for this man in the form of compassion. Ascher appeals to logos in order to define compassion in her quote, "For the ancient Greeks, drama taught and reinforced compassion within a society" (48). Ascher includes the real facts about the Greeks in her essay. When she includes these facts, it enables the readers to validate that compassion is something that is taught, whether it is through plays or having to see someone in a worse condition than they are, compassion is still attained. Ascher utilizes examples in her essay, "On Compassion" to show the pity people are taking on the ones who are in a painstaking position. The author supplies her essay with the mode of comparing and contrasting in her quote,"The object of Greek ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Violence plagues some corners of the world, and too many still live under the grip of tyrannical regimes. And although all the world's major faiths teach love, compassion and tolerance, unthinkable violence is being perpetrated in the name of religion. And yet, fewer among us are poor, fewer are hungry, fewer children are dying, and more men and women can read than ever before. In many countries, recognition of women's and minority rights is now the norm. There is still much work to do, of course, but there is hope and there is progress. The problem is not a lack of material riches. It is the growing number of people who feel they are no longer useful, no longer needed, no longer one with their societies. In America today, compared with 50 years ago, three times as many working–age men are completely outside the work force. This pattern is occurring throughout the developed world – and the consequences are not merely economic. Feeling superfluous is a blow to the human spirit. It leads to social isolation and emotional pain, and creates the conditions for negative emotions to take root. What can we do to help? The first answer is not systematic. It is personal. Everyone has something valuable to share. We should start each day by consciously asking ourselves, "What can I do today to appreciate the gifts that others offer me?" We need to make sure that global brotherhood and oneness with others are not just abstract ideas that we profess, but personal commitments that we mindfully put into practice. Each of us has the responsibility to make this a habit. But those in positions of responsibility have a special opportunity to expand inclusion and build societies that truly need ... As a child's innocence gradually fade away due to maturity, he or she transforms into a compassionate person. In a coming of age short story, "Marigolds," Eugenia Collier writes about a series of events where a young girl, named Lizabeth, develops into a compassionate person. Lizabeth narrates these events in a flashback that involve the marigolds of her neighbor, Miss Lottie. Miss Lottie's marigolds were the essence of hope in the midst of the town filled with dust and dirt. The effect of economic struggles that the townspeople go through causes Lizabeth to destroy Miss Lottie's marigolds. Throughout the short story, "Marigolds," the characterization ... In effect, having Lizabeth destroy the marigolds gives Lizabeth a lesson that would turn her into a compassionate person. The night that the flowers became destroyed, Lizabeth had heard an argument between her parents. Significantly, she did not like how her father was being weak while her mother was being strong. Then, to let all her emotions out, she went to Miss Lottie's house to destroy the marigolds. After her deed, Lizabeth calms down and realizes Miss Lottie saw the mess. This moment was when Lizabeth realizes her destruction on the marigolds. The moment she saw Miss Lottie and her expression of the mess, Lizabeth comes to a realization of why Miss Lottie planted marigolds. Thinking back on her past, Lizabeth said "Yet, there are times when the image of those passionate yellow mounds return with a painful poignancy. For one does not have to be ignorant and poor to find that one's life is barrens the dusty yards of one's town. And I too have planted marigolds" (30). Every time she remembers the marigolds and how they look she describes them as, "the images of those passionate yellow mounds return with a painful poignancy." The "passionate yellow mounds" is the description of marigolds and every time she remembers them, she has a "painful poignancy" which can be indicated that the marigolds represent the lesson she has learned and her experience to becoming a compassionate person. The end sentence of the quote "And I too have planted marigolds" is the overall lesson that Lizabeth learns from her experience that made her a compassionate person. Growing up and maturing into an adult, children begin to progressively lose their innocence as they become more of a compassionate person because one can not have both innocence and compassion simultaneously. In fact, a coming of age short story called "Marigolds" written by Eugenia Collier, tells about a young girl named Lizabeth who grows up to become a compassionate person. For the most part, Lizabeth tells her childhood experience in a flashback on how she mostly remembers Miss Lottie's marigolds. Ultimately, Lizabeth decides to destroy Miss Lottie's marigolds out of anger because she hears about her parent's economic struggles. Shortly after Lizabeth realizes what she had done, she realizes the meaning of why Miss Lottie plants the marigolds. Throughout the short story, "Marigolds," the characterization of Lizabeth helps develop the author's argument that one can not have both compassion and innocence. The three events that show this is, when Lizabeth hesitates before throwing the rocks at the marigolds, hearing the sounds of her father's sorrowful cries, and eliminating Miss Lottie's marigolds. Collier's argument in "Marigolds" was that one cannot have both compassion and innocence and this is revealed through the event where Lizabeth decides to throw rocks at the marigolds. • 33. Analysis Of Upton Sinclair's The Jungle And The Harvest... Change is one of the most difficult things to do, it is always difficult to find what to change let alone how to change. However, one of the key messages a writer can convey to an audience is human compassion or empathy, to inspire action or change, and to bring about a deeper understanding of the world. Both writer Upton Sinclair's fiction writing "The Jungle" and the non–fiction writing "The Harvest Gypsies" by John Steinbeck inform the reader of the difficulties faced by immigrants and migrant workers. However while the author of "The Jungle", Upton Sinclair, uses descriptive details that show the plight of the immigrants, it is the deeper understanding of the difficulties faced from the families in John Steinbeck's "The Harvest Gypsies" that are more efficacious in evoking compassion and inspiring change. In 1906 Upton Sinclair worked side by side with immigrants in the meatpacking industry endeavoring to reveal what genuinely goes on within the factory walls. While doing so, Upton Sinclair uses details that evoke compassion while bringing out a deeper understanding of their world. In the fictional writing The Jungle, the author Upton Sinclair uses details such as "ate as much raw blood as food", "mile after mile" and describes the immigrant's journey as an endless vista of pain and uncleanliness. Sinclair describes the journey of the immigrants as a journey of endless suffering. It is the amount of suffering that the immigrants go through that evoke compassion while ... Compassion Fatigue : Symptoms And Treatment Compassion Fatigue Cynthia Young University of St. Mary Compassion Fatigue Two hours until shift change and Sally Smith, RN was looking forward to going home and putting her aching legs up on the ottoman and drinking an ice cold Coke. She was thinking to herself that the patients were so needy all the time, she felt she gave them all she had and still all she had was not enough. "I feel like I never get anytime to myself any more" she said as the elevator door opened and she and her peer made their way to the parking deck. Sally called "see you tomorrow; I must be crazy to keep coming back here!" The phrase compassion fatigue was initially identified by C. Joinson in 1992 while doing research on burnout in emergency room nurses. Joinson described situations where nurses "had either turned off their own feelings or experienced helplessness and anger in response to the stress they [felt] watching patients go through devastating illnesses or trauma" (Yoder, 2010, p. 191). As long as I get good grades, follow the rules, and clean my room, then I get an "I am so proud of you" speech at the end of the day. My parents are very conservative, not only did I grow up in the church, I also attended a Christian school since pre–school all the way to my senior year in high school. Coming from a conservative, religious family I have always heard that meditation is bad. While Neff practices Buddhist meditation and uses some of these ideas in her programs to teach self–compassion, after listening to one of the meditation podcasts, I can see the benefit. The meditation practices she developed helps one relax, become more self–aware, and focused on thoughts of love and compassion not only towards oneself but also towards others. Another aspect that I had not taken into consideration is the difference between self–compassion and self–esteem. As Neff explains, self–esteem is basically one's perceived value and worth; however, it is contingent on how one is compared to another. I have never looked at self–esteem being a problematic, negative term, now I understand the aspects of it that can be detrimental to ones well– being. Always striving to have high self–esteem leads us to put other people down in the process, it also insinuates that we have to be perfect and better to be worthy, which is the opposite of what Neff's concept of self–compassion entails. Our society thrives on the idea that one has to be better than their counterpart, what we lack is this idea of self–compassion. Therefore, I think it would be very beneficial to teach self–compassion in children; this may lead to an overall more compassionate generation that flourishes on how we can help each other and ourselves ... My sister, Tanya Jai Peterson Wood, has said to me to "Buck up Buttercup" many times under a vast variety of circumstances, to the point where I say it to others, and think it even when TJ is not around. TJ has made the biggest difference in my life, and is my heroine. TJ let one of her friend's push me and we came close to a canal, TJ's friend lost control and ended up pushing me into the canal. TJ immediately started to take off her rollerblades and her friends, screaming, attracted the attention of a car. The car pulled over, a man got out and stopped TJ, and the man pulled me out. Now, TJ could have decided not to tell my parents what happened, but she was humble enough to tell them. She had to accept the consequences of what happened, and that is what a good hero or heroine is to me. They are humble, and willing to take responsibility for their mistakes, when made. The Funny Thing About Adversity By David Desteno The Funny Thing About Adversity Recently, I was reading an article that is called "The Funny Thing About Adversity" which is written by David DeSteno who is a psychology professor at Northeastern University. DeSteno's purpose is to convince the reader that experiencing hardship makes a person sympathetic or unsympathetic depending on the case of hardship that person has experienced, and being a compassionate does not occur by chance. DeSteno makes two primary claims: one is by illustrating that if an individual has lived through unpleasant events, that person will be familiar with the difficult situations involved, which would lead a person to be sympathetic. The second claim is that it is incorrect to believe if someone has experienced the same struggle that you experienced, he might not lend a hand due to the fact that there is a glitch in the human's mind that makes people forget about their own past hardships. Initially, DeSteno begins his argument by providing the opposite of his claim, which is an excellent method to persuade his readers. Since, he uses scientific studies that demonstrate adversity is linked to many types of negative mental outcomes as nervousness and unhappiness. Then DeSteno smartly shifts to support his claim by trying his best to argue the scientific studies' outcomes, by referring to the result of past real event, as the collapse of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear–powered plant within Japan, where people even in the middle of their individual ... In Elie Wiesel's, Night, we watch as Eliezer goes through brutal events and attempts to remain faithful to God and his Father, and he only slightly succumbs to the lack of compassion of the other prisoners, towards the end, as he loses hope but soon regains it after he is saved. Now over 1 million children in 26 developing countries are sponsored through Compassion. How It Works Reverend Everett Swanson did more than respond individually to the morbid reality of worldwide poverty, he also created a way for us to respond easily by sponsoring a child. it would not be realistic to say that every one of us must travel to Kenya to provide a meal for a starving child, or to drive to Mexico to teach an illiterate teenager how to read and write. Nevertheless, we can show compassion to those affected by poverty through sponsoring a child. Compassion is an international Christian ministry that is dedicated to the development of children living in extreme poverty in 26 developing countries. By collaborating with local Christian churches in communities worldwide, they are able to care for the spiritual, economic, social, physical, and emotional development of children. • 53. The Concept Of Compassion By Using Walker And Avant's (... The concept compassion is heart felt and used by many to cover a subjective feeling. Compassion is experienced by people across the world in healthcare and in many aspects of life. It is well known in many disciplines, and has been deemed a quality in which nurses possess in their profession. The idea is one that is familiarized by many, but is not clearly defined in nursing education or practice but has been the foundation regarding the high–quality of care nurses are thought to contribute to the medical world. The purpose of this concept analysis is to understand the experience of compassion. By using Walker and Avant's (2011) eight–step guideline for concept analysis on compassion, this analysis will provide examples and definitions resulting in an explanation of the importance of the concept related to nursing practice. To gain a better overview of the concept compassion, an extensive search using EBSCOhost Academic Search Elite online database was used. The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Medline, PubMed, and Cochrane Library databases were searched using compassion, empathy, sympathy, and compassion analysis. A literature review was conducted in nursing, medicine, sociology, psychology, ethics, and religion to help define compassion for this concept analysis. In this concept analysis, compassion will be defined using ideas from many historical views and taking the key concepts from an array of disciplines as well as expanding on the ... • 55. A Reflection On The 's ' The Vision Of Happiness It's been said that "If the immediate and direct purpose of our life is not suffering then our existence is the most ill–adapted to its purpose in the world" . Obviously, that person was not Aristotle (unless the entirety of Nichomachean Ethics utilizes a tone of obfuscated sarcasm typically reserved for internet forums or pretentious asides) as he posits happiness as the ultimate human end, and contemplation the best way of achieving it. However, both the vision of happiness he puts forth, as well as the means for achieving it, differ widely from the typical semantics held throughout antiquity and modernity by the listless majority. Although rather than simply explain his thought, I intend to demonstrate how one comes to such conclusions, and so we must return to the initial Germanic dissension. Initially, it seems difficult to argue with such an assertion. Within humanity alone, there exists a constancy of suffering, which resonates with greater magnitude and frequency then any other state of being. As all else decays, human suffering endures with adamant universality, gleaming with such brightness that it outshines all other potential ends (apart from, perhaps, the biological imperatives of preservation and procreation). Yet suffering as an end in itself seems so morbidly facetious that it is overlooked by the willfully ignorant and the optimistically rational alike (and since I am a meritocratic elitist, we might as well focus exclusively on the arguments made by ... • 57. Developing Compassion Essay a merciless event, it is selfish without even realizing it. Doing good deeds does not make us a good individual, it just makes us decent. The benefits of generosity for both our physical and mental health are outstanding. generosity reduces stress, supports one's physical health, enhances one's sense of purpose, and helps fight depression, it has also been shown to increase one's lifespan because all the health benefits of not being stressed. You may think you are being selfless, but you are also benefiting yourself in a way you did not know about. Developing compassion increases our happiness. In an experiment published in Science by Harvard Business School professor Michael Norton, they gave money to; two sets of groups, one that spent money on themselves and the other spent it on other people. It was found that the people who bought presents for others showed an increase in happiness, this was even the case with children giving treats to others. We are using an unselfish event and making for an ego boost. However, by doing so we need to become conscious of the world around us. As we develop more of an awareness we become more concerned about what is going on around us. Therefore, we carry guilt for simple things like throwing a cigarette on the ground, we may feel guilty for a bit, but we can always change our actions and help the world around us. Compassion is simple and uses common sense, it is humble and straightforward. Being compassionate is difficult for those who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Rhetorical Analysis Of `` What The Hell Is Water `` By... Famed American author David Foster Wallace gave a commencement speech to Kenyon College's graduating class of 2005. Most commencement speeches focus on graduates' accomplishments as well as give general life advice. Wallace's presentation follows this pattern at first, congratulating the students on getting their diplomas. However, most of his speech is dedicated to the idea of thinking beyond ourselves. Throughout the speech, Wallace argues we should live with empathy through his use of humor and appeals to the audience's empathy. The introduction quickly introduces the humorous tone found throughout the piece with his use of anecdotes. In the opening anecdote, two young fish fail to recognize that they are surrounded by water. By juxtaposing the academic setting with the fish exclaiming "what the hell is water?" the speaker creates humor with the fish's unexpected colloquialism. Furthermore, Wallace connects the irony of the fish anecdote with the that of most adults, who are unable to see what really matters in life just as the fish can not see the water that encompasses them. The speaker follows this story with another about an atheist and a theist arguing about the existence of God. By refusing to see the other's perspective, Wallace shows the humor in their rigid belief systems. The speaker also pokes fun at his liberal arts audience by asking why they accept both men's position without questioning their rationale for doing so. By doing so, Wallace displays audience ... I work in a large department which has a huge number of staff and my responsibility is doing payroll for all the classified, certificated and semi–monthly employees. It is a high–pressured job, involving a great deal of stress, with a hectic schedule and there are always deadlines to meet. Keywords: truthful, pursue justice [fairness for all], compassionate, develop partnerships, spirit of community Whether People at My Work Organization Have These Five Values: Truth, Justice, Compassion, Partnership and Community Truthfulness. Let me start by saying that the people I work with are not very truthful and they like to bend the truth. The two people that interviewed me for my current job were the coordinator of our department and my immediate supervisor. • 65. Figley's Model Of The Compassion Fatigue Process Lipchick (2002), describes the therapist–client relationship as a structure coupling between to unique human beings in complementary roles. In a healthcare context, Sabo (2006) states that empathy and compassion are critical aspects involved in understanding the clients' needs to create a therapeutic relationship between client and nurse. The integration of the concepts of compassion and empathy could become a negative facilitator of 'the cost of caring for others' later described as Compassion Fatigue (CF) (Figley, 1995). The definition is contested, though; the first definition was proposed by Joinson (1992) characterising CF as a unique form of burnout that nurses experience because of exhaustion. Coetzee and Klopper (2010) explain that CF is a concept established in relation to the burnout of nurses'. Their duty to tend to sick and traumatised patients exposes them to pain and suffering daily, and thus many lose their ability to nurture. Supported by Pack and Roberts (2012), CF occurs when individuals are unable to continue bearing the trauma of others, consequently leading to a significant reduction in wellbeing and work capacity. Whilst CF has regularly been observed in a healthcare environment, no such research has been conducted in a sport and exercise context. Figley's (2002) model of the Compassion Fatigue Process enables a further understanding of the factors contributing to CF and some key terms surrounding it. The model is based on assumptions that empathy and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The both novels of the research implement the ideas of compassion and forgiveness differently. Miller points out in his novel that, whenever people start building up civilization based on science alone; unavoidable war and cultural collapse follows. • 69. Compassion, Its Importance And Effects Of Health Care Compassion The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate an understanding of compassion, its importance and effects in health care. Compassion is an interesting topic and very important element within nursing (Dietze and Orb 2000). Involving patients, understanding their situation and being close to them rather than seeing them as a medical condition or procedure. Main In all aspects of nursing it is important that nurses are able to provide care with compassion. As it impels and empowers nurses to not only acknowledge but act (Schantz 2007). This is also supported by Bradshaw (2011) who highlighted that compassion is not only in words but also in action. The NMC Code (2015) guidelines suggest that compassionate care is prioritising ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Using this particular analogy, compassion should be given to all patients young or elderly, whether their illness is long term or short term. Compassion helps build a patient 's confidence (Welford, 2012) and trust in the nurse through effective communication and acknowledges that they are not suffering alone. Therefore, nurses ought to be friendly, caring and also show genuine interest in their patients. In mental health nursing this is shown by not stereotyping when caring for certain types of patients i.e. patients who have been referred to a hospital through the criminal justice system. Accepting patients for who they are, whilst acting as a sympathetic listener. And, appreciating how they feel in difficult times, demonstrates compassion and professionalism. Though benevolence is at the heart of the nursing profession, over time nurses develop compassion fatigue. Dulmus & Sowers (2012) expresses this as a form of working and caring very much and not acknowledging one 's personal needs. Nurses tend to develop dissatisfaction and work–related stress, due to exhaustion in their profession. It is an unrealistic expectation for nurses to nurses to not be affected when immersed in suffering and loss daily. Remen (2006) described this as expecting to be able to walk through water without getting wet. Within health organisations there are ways compassion fatigue is avoided such as clinical supervision, peer to peer support and professional ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Jimmy was a good guy at heart but made some bad decisions. Jimmy moved to Elmore where he opened a shoe store, and met Annabel his fiance. Jimmy Valentine was trying to live a moral life because he was honest, compassionate, and responsible. First, Jimmy Valentine was trying to live a moral life by showing his honesty. Jimmy showed his honesty by agreeing to go with Ben Spencer after he cracked open the safe. Jimmy knew that Ben had been watching him, and instead of running after he cracked the safe he went to Ben as if he was going to take him back to jail. My film is about the daily routine with my dog, Phileo, and how our relationship with each other resembles this concept. In this paper, I will define and analyze Compassion and Care and it's significance to my video called, "Phileo & Me". Compassion is more than just relieving a patient's suffering but is an essence to enter a patient's experience and therefore helps to achieve the best optimal holistic care (Von Dietze & Orb, 2000). According to Dewar (2011) in her statement during the 2010 Royal College of Nursing Conference, compassion is how we can relate to our patients, which includes acknowledging ... In my film, it shows that studying does take a large portion of my day and is stressful, but Phileo shows compassion by understanding my feelings, my emotions, and my position as a student and keeps me company through it all. My expression in the beginning of studying is downcast but after being supported and encouraged by Phileo, and is shown in our facial expressions and even in the way I was hugging tightly (Rillera, 2017, 00:00:33). Beautiful people do not just happen" (Elisabeth Kubler–Ross). Compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern make mankind beautiful, but it also makes it defenseless . One day Santiago went far out to sea on his own to catch a marlin. He went on a terrible journey which had an even more dreadful outcome. Santiago caught the marlin, but had to return home empty handed because sharks tore his fish to pieces. When Manolin saw Santiago had returned, he was overjoyed to see that he was still alive. "The boy saw that Santiago was breathing and then he saw the old man's hands and he started to cry. He went out very quietly to go bring some coffee and all the way down the road he was crying" (Hemingway 122). Manolin felt compassion for Santiago because he had to embark on a solitary, godawful journey. Manolin felt very close to Santiago, and he had feared that he had passed away at sea. Once Manolin discovered Santiago survived, he was so relieved that he burst into tears. This all goes to show how vulnerable Manolin was because of his compassion for Santiago. • 77. Compassion In Thank You, MaAm By Langston Hughes "Compassionate people are geniuses in the art of living, more necessary to the dignity, security, and joy of humanity than the discoveries of knowledge." –– Albert Einstein Everyone has difficulties and tragedies in life, some more than others. Though when people show compassion, it makes your spirits rise and make your challenges more bearable. In the short story, "Thank you, Ma'am" by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, a woman whose purse has been an attempted target by a boy, shows the theme of compassion with an overflowing amount of it. The boy, Roger, learns throughout the story that compassion is very important, and his true personality is revealed by some woman he doesn't even know. At the beginning of "Thank you, Ma'am," we see how just how compassionate Mrs. Jones really is. The moment she meets Roger, she tells the boy to wash his face. "Least I can do is wash your face. Are you hungry?" This might not seem like a very compassionate thing to do at first, however, she doesn't even know the boy, yet she has enough compassion to make sure he is clean. Then, she takes the boy inside of her house! In addition, the boy, Roger asks, "You going to take me to jail?" But Mrs. Jones doesn't. Maybe she sees that Roger is really a good boy inside, so she shows compassion to bring out his true kindness. This makes me think that he was probably trying to steal because he had to.
