Active Hope By Joan Macy Quotes
Active Hope, written by Joan Macy, is an interesting read that discusses many topics regarding
social and environmental change in the modern world. Joan Macy employs many ideas to engage
the reader into her point of view and outlines the book in a very different way that distinguishes it
from other books.
(Quote 1) To begin with "Reflecting on Success" on page 226; this part of the book inspired me. Her
quote "If the change we want doesn't happen in our lifetime, does that mean we will never
experience success? For the encouraging boost we get when we know we're moving forward, we
need to find markers of progress we can spot more easily and often." Not only is this quote
important but it can be relevant to many things we live through and foresee daily. For example, if
one is trying to achieve a certain fitness goal, it is not the brightest outlook to just select a very far–
fetched goal and not track small points of progress beforehand. In fact, if one was to do such a thing,
it would be rather challenging since frustration and injury would occur before one could even see
any results since the results are not being analyzed closely enough. ... Show more content on

Without closely analyzing certain key points, success is rather construed to be a challenging task.
Personally, if I was to complete a task at hand, it is best to try to tackle the task through breaking it
down into small goals. Whether it is an essay I am writing or a 2 mile–run, it is important to
recognize this relativity. I think if we can apply this to the issues and problems within the world of
environmentalism, then hope and change as Macy believes will occur, however, on a relatively
microscopic scale not foreseeable with the human

Different Perspectives In Dickens And Charles Dickens's...
If we want to make changes in our Lives, then we will have to look at the causes and the way we are
using our minds, the way we are thinking. For, "No two things can occupy the same space at the
same time. You can't have a positive thought & hold on to the negative one. Choose one." ~Louise
Hay. We all have the will and heart, the courage and braveness to let go of the past and to learn from
it, and not to dwell in it. So, after all how can something, be both positive and Negative at the same
time. Well in a very simple way of putting it, an event can be both positive and negative at the same
time. It all comes down on what perspective you are seeing the event from. For, different
perspectives can show us stories in a whole other way and in a whole new light. During the book
Tale of Two Cities written by Charles Dickens, you could see this view in many different ways.
First, you could see how Carton spend a lot of time criticizing himself and imagining that he would
never be able to change. This caused him to not even try and to just live life, in a sad state. Next,
sacrifice can be positive and it usually means to have new beginnings. On the other hand, you are
usually losing something dear to you, which hurts you for the rest of your life. That is why, no one
should dwell in the past, but learn from it and move on. Lastly, courage could be a positive and at
the same time a negative aspect. It all depends on our own personal perspective, or viewpoint.

Examples Of Hope In Night By Elie Wiesel
"Hope is the only thing stronger than fear." –President Snow in The Hunger Games. The book Night
by Elie Wiesel is a true story about the holocaust. In the story the main character, Elie, experiences
terrible things. He is so hopeful that things are going to get better (after all how could they get any
worse) and he is so fearful that his last bit of hope will be taken away and he will give up on life.
Elie experiences the worst things that we can imagine. How could anyone have hope in such
darkness? What could anyone fear when they have lost everything?
"Never give up hope, no matter how dark things seem" –Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars: the Clone Wars.
In the beginning of the story Elie is hopeful at every turn. He has a bright, hopeful future and then
he and his family are taken away. When they are in the ghetto Elie is hopeful that he and his family
won't have to leave. He hopes he and his family will be okay. However his hope is taken away from
him. He and his family arrive and they take his group near a crematorium. Elie is hopeful that he
and his father won't be taken into the crematorium's deadly fire. But when he gets inside the camp
he wishes that he would have been killed by the deadly fire. Later on in the story Elie meets his
Uncle Stein. His Uncle asks him how his wife and sons are doing. Elie doesn't have a clue but lies
and says they are okay. This renews Uncle Stein's faith but later on his village comes to the camp
and Stein discovers that they died a long time ago. This news crushed Stein and he died days later.
He lost his hope. Elie watches this scene unravel and hopes that he won't lose his last bit of hope, his
father. However he would soon lose him. "No! I yelled. He's(Elie's dad) not dead! Not yet!" Elie on
page 93 in Night. Elie's last bit of hope, his only reason for living, is his father. His father slowly
starts to fade away and Elie can't let him die, because then he'll be dead soon after. However what
happened in their relationship might have been worse than him just dying. One day when he, his
father, and a group of other prisoners are being transported. The prison guards began to throw bread
in their transport and then men began fighting to the death. Elie watches a son attempt to

Night By Elie Wiesel: Book Analysis
"When you have lost hope, you have lost everything. And when you think all is lost, when all is dire
and bleak, there is always hope" (I Am Number Four Caruso). In life, when we give up hope, we
give up everything. Our dreams are forever lost and the fight within us to live on is gone. Giving up
hope is giving up on life. Even in the darkest moments of life there is always hope and that hope
will keep you living. In the book Night, people either gave up hope of everything or held on to what
little hope they had and lived to tell their story. A man named Meir Kratz lost hope and had no will
to survive, and thus surrendered his life. Another person in the book, Akiba Drumer, lost all hope in
life and eventually gave in to death. Eliezer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, a boy named Juliek had hope up until his death. This hope is shown through Juliek's
constant playing of his violin. Even when it seemed that death was inevitable, Juliek kept playing.
This playing gave not only Juliek himself hope, but also everyone around him. Hope may not have
saved Juliek, but Juliek's music helped saved others by spreading that hope amongst the prisoners.
In this situation, it does not seem as if hope determined if one was to live. Juliek may have known
that there was no way around his death. He knew that he was too weak and sick to go on, but instead
of giving up hope he decided to grasp it and spread that hope on to others so that they may survive.
Juliek's way of keeping his hope was through playing his violin. Juliek may have had no other way
to hang on to hope. Therefore, the only reason Juliek died was because his body was too physically
worn out. Instead of giving up hope when Juliek knew he was dying, he continued to play as a way
to give hope to others. Another time in the book, two men were hung for possessing arms. People
would disagree that hope did not determine survival in this situation. ""Long live liberty!"" (Wiesel
64). These were the words of the men as the were about to be hung. The two men had hope until
they died, just as Juliek did. The men believed that justice would be served and that these times

Flowers And The Symbol Of Flowers
A symbol of purity, innocence or life, when connected to the motivation of a character, flowers have
the ability to demonstrate a character's emotions and behaviors in a way that describing a character's
physical and emotional appearance cannot. Vibrant flowers symbolize aspiration and determination
while a wilted or destroyed flower represents a somber and heartbroken attitude toward life. The
motif of the flowers in Paul's Case and The Chrysanthemums represent the progression of the
characters' hope and dreams.
In the opening scene of Paul's Case, the author notes the vibrant, red carnation that Paul wears to his
disciplinary meeting and consequently the teacher's distaste of what they believe the flower
symbolizes referring to it as a, "scandalous red carnation" and how, "his whole attitude was
symbolized by...his flippantly red carnation flower" (Cather 114). A defiant student, shown by his
disrespect toward his teachers, Paul seems unfazed to the fact that he is in a disciplinary meeting
choosing to act indifferent to what his teachers say about him. He is arrogant consequently holding
himself to a higher status than his teachers thus causing him to feel entitled. The red carnation
symbolizes his idealistic view of society in which he had hopes and ... Show more content on

In both Paul's Case and The Chrysanthemums, the character's willpower and idealistic views of the
world shattered, causing them to come to terms with the harsh realities that coincide with the dreams
that they held for themselves. Though Paul and Elisa choose different paths after the destruction of
the flowers, both characters' hopes and dreams are destroyed themselves as the now have to navigate
the harsh reality of life. Both authors chose to portray how, like a flower, people are not impervious
to life around them and when reality strikes, it has the ability to destroy a

Saint Margaret Mary And The Sacred Heart Of Jesus Summary
Discover the history and the origin of the First Friday devotion and Sacred Heart of Jesus in Saint
Margaret Mary and the Promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by Mary Fabyan Windeatt. Saint
Margaret Mary and the Promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus tells the astounding story of a french
nun, from her painful and ailing childhood to her glorious visions of Jesus as a humble and healthy
nun. During Margaret's lifetime , she grows in the virtues of obedience, loyalty, and piety.
Throughout Margaret's Lifetime she develops the virtue of Obedience, by her words and actions .
One morning, Margaret was planning to gather some wild flowers for Our lady's shrine but Aunt
Benedicta forbade her to leave the house without permission and put her to work. Even though
Margaret was very disappointed that she couldn't go pick flowers for Our Blessed Mother, Margaret
obediently answered "I....I'll be glad to help" and though still very weak, Margaret obeyed, and did
the list of things her aunt told her to do. During Margarets time in the convent, the Lord had asked
her to make a very big sacrifice, and that was to eat cheese. Margaret absolutely despised cheese, "It
would be a thousand times easier to die than to eat cheese" thought Margaret. She had tried to eat

Hope By Emily Dickinson Rhetorical Devices
Hope is the thing with feathers
"Hope" is the thing with feathers –
That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words –
And never stops – at all –
And sweetest – in the Gale – is heard –
And sore must be the storm –
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm –
I've heard it in the chillest land –
And on the strangest Sea –
Yet – never – in Extremity,
It asked a crumb – of me.
Hope
Hope abides; therefore I abide.
Countless frustrations have not cowed me.
I am still alive, vibrant with life.
The black cloud will disappear,
The morning sun will appear once again
In all its supernal glory. Sri Chinmoy

The poem opens with the line "Hope is the thing with feather. " In this line, persona associated hope
and bird and made a metaphor. Then it follows like this, "That perches in the soul/ And sings the tune
without words/ And never stops–at all." In these lines, persona thinks that hope is like a singing bird,
even though sometimes it doesn't speak to us, eternally it will stay permanent in us. Also by
mentioning, hope as a permanent thing in inside of us, allows us to acquire most of what life gives
to us. The second stanza creates some kind of opposition for the hope, and in this stanza persona
metaphorically describe a person, who destroys his/her hope. By saying, "And sore must be the
storm/That could abash the little bird/ That kept so many warm," persona used an impressive
metaphor by associating storm with anger and negativity. The storm abash the bird (hope) and cause
pain and discomfort hurts it. In the fourth stanza, with the following line which is "I've heard it in
the chilliest lands," persona tried to make her reader to believe in hope, she tried to convince that
hope is everywhere. In the last two lines,"Yet–never– in extremity/ It asked a crumb of me", persona
mentioned that hope is a gift that doesn't exist for

The Bite Of The Mango Analysis
Throughout every individual's life, there is the existence of hope due to the encouragement of those
who support and inspire one another. Hope has been the essential reason why Mariatu has the desire
to continue her life while accepting who she is throughout the book The Bite of the Mango written
by Mariatu Kamara and Susan McClelland. The exclusion to inclusion that Mariatu experiences
because of hope portrays Jean Vanier's ideology throughout his book Becoming Human as he
believes that individuals can influence and potentially change each other's life by just opening their
hearts. Mariatu faces exclusion from the upper class as they fail to realize that she could receive help

Mariatu feels an excellent amount of love and compassion among her friend as she reveals her story
to her "I like the way she smelled, like Ivory soap, and her body felt so warm beside me. She held
me as I let my life story unravel"(Kamara & McClelland 146). When Mariatu moves to London, she
has the feeling of exclusion due to leaving her family and tradition behind. She was used to the
feeling of inclusion in Sierra Leone when she was sleeping due to her family members sleeping
beside her, giving her a sense of safe and comfort. When she was in England, someone who she had
looked at as a sister, realized that she was not having a good time. The charming women named
Yaboom would sleep beside Mariatu asking her about her story. This causes Mariatu's heart to shine
as she tells her story, having the sense that she matters. Need context and search proper format for
this quote "As we start to really get to know others, as we begin to listen to each other's stories,
things begin to change. We no longer judge each other according to concepts of power and
knowledge or according to group identity, but according to these personal, heart–to–heart
encounters. We being the movement from exclusion to inclusion, from fear to trust, from closedness
to openness, from judgement and prejudice to forgiveness and understanding. It is a movement of
the heart. We begin to see each other as brothers and sisters in humanity. We are no longer governed
by fear but by the heart" (Vanier 83). As Vanier explains through his ideology about listening to each
other, he expresses the careness and emotion that can be provoked by listening to each other's
stories. As he says everything begins to change when listening to each other's stories, he illustrates
the feeling the two had when Yaboom was listening to Mariatu's story. When Mariatu reveals her
story to Yabom, she

Lord Of The Flies Fire Symbolism Essay
Don't play with fire. Fire is unpredictable, uncontainable, and its results are everlasting.
Nonetheless, fireplaces, campfires, and birthday candles, rouse the fascination of children and adults
because it is the universal symbol of spirit. Unlike conventional symbols, fire has an intrinsic
relationship with the spirit it represents. A fire radiates heat and light to create an impression of
power and liveliness. The vivacious flames are always dancing in different patterns, but maintain a
degree of constancy. In the Lord of the Flies, fire is a prominent symbol of Ralph's hopeful spirit
throughout the series of events on the island. Fire's recurring appearances throughout the novels
demonstrates that there is always hope in all situations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shows that Ralph's hopes may not be as high, but the fire–along with hope–still exists.
Savagery is a threat to hope, but does not cause hope to die out. Despite fire's recurring presence, the
fire burns out when the hunters desert their duty to tend the fire and hunt a pig instead. When Ralph
discovers that Jack and his hunters neglect the fire, Jack provides a feeble excuse. "[Ralph to Jack]
'You let the fire go out.' [...] [Jack insists] 'You should have seen the blood!'" (Golding 70) When the
hunters choose to hunt instead of tending the fire, it represents a descent from the original orderly
civilization into savagery. In this scene, Golding hints that savagery threatens Ralph's hopeful
mindset for a civilized tribe, but savagery does not kill hope. By the end of the book, all of the boys
become hunters who are regarded as "savages", murder Ralph's faithful comrade Piggy, and steal the
spectacles along with the fire; Ralph seems to be at rock bottom. Ralph has no one to turn to,
nowhere to stay, and no plan for the future as he scrambles to escape a hunt, all the while, unable to
see hope in his situation. The narrator speaks, "The best thing to do was to ignore this laden feeling
about the heart, [...] no fire; no smoke; no rescue," (Golding). Unfortunately for Ralph, the hunt
escalates when Jack's savage forest fire consumes the

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Optimism is an emotion that inspires hopefulness and confidence about the future. Optimism
propels people and novels forward. Optimism is a driving force in the novel "Lord of The Flies" by
William Golding and the novel "The Fault in Our Stars" by John Green. In the novel "Lord of the
Flies",one of the most important emotions is optimism. Without optimism the boys would have no
hope that they would make it off the island. At the start of the novel things are not going the boys
way, their plane crashes in the middle of nowhere and they do not know what to do. The boys are in
a state of chaos and they need a leader, the leader will soon be known as protagonist of the novel,
Ralph. Ralph is elected by the boys and he is optimistic about the boys survival on the island."I'm
chief," said Ralph, "because you chose me". [] Besides Ralph the other 2 main leaders are Piggy and
Simon. Piggy is the brains of the group but Simon is something else. Simon is pure and genuine, he
believes in the good of all of the boys on the island and that they will survive. "You'll get back to
where you came from." (7.15) Ralph and Simon are the two optimists in a time of peril and without
them the group would not be able to function.
Another important example of optimism in "Lord of The Flies" are the usages of signs by the boys.
The boys use these signs to help ease the reality of what is really happening on the island. Ralph
decides the boys should make a signal fire to signal air and ship traffic

be hard to have, even when life gets you down. Imagine having to live in an annex for 3 years while

to Anne Frank and Marcus, but they still had hope. Both "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "Freedom

Family Systems Theory Of Hope
Research
There has been much research surrounding hope as a theory, form of treatment, and its application in
both psychotherapy and health industries. In his research Snyder was able to corroborate his
hypothesis that people are likely to think in terms of goals and are constantly finding and refining
way to accomplish those goals (2002). Participants also often spoke about the connection between
those pathways and their motivations. Snyder found that hope was a form of motivation for goal
attainment, and was directly related to positive outcome measured by the degree of hopefulness or a
hope scale (2002). He concluded that hope is a primary way of thinking and emotions played a
lesser secondary role. Collective research shows that the degree of hopefulness is also related to the
probability and proximity of goal attainment. Those with short or intermediate goals typically show
higher levels of hope than those with long–term or seemingly impossible targets. Additionally, those
who consistently practice high hopefulness would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The idea is that organisms are complex systems in and of themselves and must be understood as
such (Boss, Doherty, LaRossa, Schumm, & Steinmetz, 1993). Like those systems, families are
complex with multiple components that interact and influence each other. In this way, researchers
and clinicians seek to explain the connectedness, behaviors, interactions, and interdependence of the
whole rather than just focusing on the individual parts. Understanding the family system requires
taking a holistic approach to pathology and treatment. Systems thinking is a way of examining how
changes in one component effects other parts of the system and back, in a cyclic comprehensive
manner. Ultimately, family system theory seeks to identify the complexities of the family and the
underlying factors that drive and are influenced by family

Analysis Of The Bicycle Thieves
Two scenes from the Bicycle Thieves that although they have nothing to do with the plot they are
essential for the film are: the scene where many bicycles and parts of them are being sold in a
piazza, this is an important scene because it adds to the film a feeling of optimism that ends up
turning into hopelessness. The other scene is the one where the thief has an epileptic fit adding to the
film a feeling of despair. These two scenes also contributes to the overall meaning of the plot by
showing us that the harder you try to accomplish what you want in life the more obstacles you will
have and the more hopelessness you will fell.
The first scene where bicycles are being sold at the piazza is very important. Ricci is hopeful at first,
and so are the watchers, that he will be able to find his bike at that place and all his problems will be
solved. He looks everywhere for it, at first it seems like his bike might be there because there is an
overwhelmingly amount of bicycles and pieces of them and the people around him helping him are
very optimistic, but as he keeps looking and looking things start getting more complicated because
every bike, tire, bell, and frame he sees could belong to his bike giving him hope that he has found it
but the moment he realizes is not his, the hopes he had to find it sinks deeper. We can observe this
when he's looking at the bikes lined up in minute 34:08, when he's looking around an expression of

Metamorphosis And Estranged Labor: Film Analysis
Most human beings hope for something, whether it be a brighter future or equal rights for all. Hope
is the idea that keeps people sane during the darkest moments. Through Frank Kafka's,
"Metamorphosis," the story of a young man who is turned into a grotesque bug, David Lynch's film ,
Eraserhead, and Karl Marx's "Estranged Labor," the theme of whether or not hope is reasonable in
times of darkness is one of the most prominent amongst all of the three. In "Metamorphosis" and
"Estranged Labor," the reader is able to witness deteriorating hope in times of despair in the form of
Gregor Samsa and his family in Kafka's piece and the alienated worker in Marx's. On the other
hand, Eraserhead conveys hope throughout the duration of the film, despite ... Show more content

He stopped caring about the things he used to, losing a lot of his human emotions.. The lack of hope
demonstrated in this piece is viewed as realistic because there are individuals who will lose hope in
times of change. The passage states,"Before, he had taken great pride in how considerate he was but
now it hardly occurred to him that he had become so thoughtless about the others" (Wyllie 21). In
the earlier sections, Gregor attempted to hold on to his humanity. However, he no longer cares, as if
there is no reason for him to want to be human. He has become comfortable with the concept of
being vermin. Samsa and his family are engulfed in a world of despair after he transforms: the only
form of income is unable to work. While he was essential before, Samsa has become nothing more
than a burden to his family. Therefore, he loses hope that he will ever be able to return to his former
self. This relates to a capitalist society because a person may lose hope after being laid off from his

Everyone needs hope in their lives for the good times and the bad. Hope is an essential part of
human life, which is sometimes symbolized into objects. Legend by Marie Lu is a dystopian story
about Day, a slum sector teen criminal, and June, a wealthy military prodigy. Marie Lu uses Day's
pendant to symbolize the hope and freedom Day and June yearn for. In the beginning of Legend,
Marie Lu uses Day's pendant to symbolize the hope and freedom that he lost after "failing" his Trials
and yearns for. An example from the text that supports this argument is on page 6, "I didn't even get

necklace...Day's pendant." His pendant become such a part of him that he reaches for it just out of
habit for emotional support. An additional reason Day misses his pendant, is because as shown on
page 57, "I reach up to touch my pendant for comfort.." The purpose of the pendent changes as
before it helped remind him of his family, but now it helps comfort him. Ultimately, the book's
conclusion shows how Day and June achieved the freedom they yearned for. On page 231, some

Mammita's Garden Cove Essay
Mammita's Garden Cove
In Mammita's Garden Cove by Cyril Dabydeen, the author uses the literary techniques questions,
tone, and flashbacks to convey the main characters view on place. Max believes that he will have
better opportunities in Canada rather than in his home country. This short story details his views on
his life at this point, and how he is doing in Canada.
The prompt immediately begins with the question, "Where d'you come from?". This tells the reader
that Max is not from the current country or setting in which the story takes place. Throughout the

Canada and of the opportunities of a new life outside of his homeland. He recalled how he planned
to get married, have children, begin a family with a house, maybe even a cottage on the edge of the
city. Middle class was his goal, he'd provide for his family, a stark difference from the "hard–to–
mouth" life he was used to. But then, all too quickly, this daydream is ripped from him as his feet
pressed to asphalt, continuing his never ending search for a job. With each step, he finds his sense of
revulsion increasing, and thus begins his doubts. He wonders if he was really happy on the island,
happier than he even realized before reaching Canada. Again, reality tears him from his regrets and
hopes and he knew he needed to find a job or he will starve. His tone quickly takes a sharp turn into
humorous denial, perhaps another past thought of what he thought life in Canada would be like; "No
one starved in Canada; that only happened in such places as India or Africa. But definitely not
Canada!" For a third time, the reality of his starving, growling stomach brings him back to his
current, unfortunate situation, in which he becomes slightly panicked at the prospect of actually not

The Theme Of Identity In The Cellist Of Sarajevo
If you could revisit any moment in your life and change the decision you made, would your identity
be any different? Could your identity, the values and beliefs you hold, be altered or erased by one
drastic event? One novel, which explores the development one's identity is Steven Galloway's The
Cellist of Sarajevo. Galloway clearly explores identity through the three main characters of the
novel; Alisa, Kenan, and Dragan, conveying a clear lesson about hope through the experiences of
the three characters. Though the conflicts from the siege cause them all to deviate from their
personalities before the siege, they eventually all revert to their original personalities, regaining their

morals, and beliefs they hold shape their identity. Though an event like the siege may temporarily
disrupt an individual, causing them to stray from their path and for a period of time, make decisions
they would not usually make, there will always be hope. Despite the conflicts that the siege brings,
the characters all maintain a shred of hope and with it a shred their personality before the siege, and
after they fully regain hope, symbolized by the music of the Cellist, they all revert back to the

The Rise Of Daniel Clocker Summary
In the essay, "The Rise of Daniel Clocker", author Lois Green Carr interprets that Daniel Clocker
wants to come to America to seek for his fortune in getting a labor job but in England the population
was growing bigger and job opportunities were getting short each minute. He had a feeling that
America offered more job opportunities for a young man to work. Carr concludes that he was
seeking for an adventure and that he was only seventeen years old to go out on his own even though
he is still a young teenager with some hopes and dreams of being a servant. In 1636, Clocker came
to Maryland and became a poor indentured servant to work for Thomas Cornwaleys. Clocker wants

Theme Of Hope And Despair By Douglas Coupland
Hope is stronger than despair. The short story by Douglas Coupland contains 2 major themes: hope
and despair. Although despair is mentioned a plethora of times, hope is much more overriding. Hope
is the sole reason why the narrator has "never lost the sensation of always being on the brink of
some magic revelation"(p.1). He then goes on saying "that if only I would look closely enough at
the world, then that magic revelation would be mine." This line shows that the narrator still believes
there is a chance for him to get closure "about what had happened recently"(p.2). Also, his mom
says people like birds because "they free us from the unique sorrow of being human"(p.2). However,
the narrator disagrees with her despair and says that "birds

to find a pearl beautiful enough to sell. His dream comes true when he discovers a magnificent pearl
one morning. At first the discovery of the pearl can be looked upon as not only a miracle but also a
life saver. Throughout the novel it becomes apparent the pearl is no where close to a miracle. Kino's
life becomes a struggle with many decisions that have to be made. In Steinbeck's novel, The Pearl,
the power of the pearl relates to Kino's emotions. Kino is hopeful in the beginning of the novel, and

Examples Of Optimism In The Book Unbroken
Imagine floating on a raft in the middle of the ocean. You are famished and dehydrated and on the
brink of death. Sores cover your sunburnt skin, and sharks surround the raft waiting for you to fall
in. But somehow you remain optimistic. You find happiness in the little things. Perhaps a rain storm
passed and you were able to drink and collect water. Maybe you caught a fish or a bird to eat. It's the
little things that are keeping you alive. This is how Louie and Phil were in Laura Hillenbrand's
Unbroken. They were both very optimistic about the situation. However, their friend Mac was very
pessimistic. He would not talk, ate all the chocolate rations, and was just trying to protect himself.

Louie and Phil used all of their strength to overcome the obstacles they went through, both
physically and mentally. Their physical strength was tested throughout their entire journey. Being
stranded on the ocean took the initial toll on Louie and Phil's bodies by diminishing them down to
67–87 and 80 pounds, respectively. Both of them had weighed around 150 pounds when they had
crashed. Louie's mental strength was tested as well. He started to have hallucinations of people
singing in the clouds, most likely due to dehydration. The two retained their strength though, by
focusing on their survival and trying to remain sane. Their optimism also had a great influence on
how strong they were. In Ruth Robertson's (2016) article "The Strength of Optimism" she states,
"There are many benefits to having a more optimistic mindset. Research tells us that it can lengthen
your life, determine how you overcome life's obstacles, build resilience and manage the risks of
developing depressive disorders and other mental health issues" (para. 3). Robertson is saying that
optimism can help you through the hard times that life throws at us. A positive mindset can
transform a life or death situation. Louie even retained a lot of physical strength while he was in the
prisoner of war camps. Near the end of his imprisonment he would have to carry literal tons back

What Is The Theme Of Hope In Copper Sun
Hope is a very powerful thing and the way you handle it can affect you in different ways. Everyone
sees and feels hope differently but it is overall a beautiful thing. Throughout the novel Copper Sun
by Sharon M. Draper, Amari tends to lose hope very often from herself and others but mostly
regains it. The novel Copper Sun has a very similar theme to the poem, "Hope is the thing with
feathers" because it captures the thought of losing all hope but being able to regain it and never
letting go of it just like Copper Sun portrays. Amari is a hopeless soul when she is reminded that her
life is not well, she has lost all contact of Besa, her family is all dead, and through her struggle to

The Great Faults With Society
During the 50's a widespread virus appeared on the scene, and there was a critical need for a cure to
this virus. The solution to this problem was the new innovation of "test tube" babies, who were
genetically engineered and modified. Hailsham was a mysterious school designed to raise these "test
tube" kids and dooming them to a predetermined fate of donating their organs. These students were
clones of regular people in society who had the money to create them, and the students were
mandated to donate their organs to their clone. The three main characters: Kathy, Ruth and Tommy
are the focus of attention throughout the novel, their divergent personalities help to create different
themes and ideas. Never Let Me Go is a journey involving conformity, friendships and the ideal of
hope in order to unravel the horrible lives they live in. This showcases the great faults with society
and makes the reader ponder on the possibility of the approaching doom of mankind. The main
character and narrator of the story is Kathy, she relives the events of the story based on the
recollection, flashbacks and stream of consciousness of her mind. The ideal of hope that Kathy
illustrates throughout the novel gives the reader a false sense that the clones will get ahead in life.

My Fairy Dream
I grew up in a world full of fairy tales and Disney characters. My parents who were trying to find a
way to distract my 5 years old mind turn on the tv, and there I was admittedly taken on a journey to
a magical place where I was safe in the knowledge that every ending is "happy–ever–after."(this is
an extended metaphor where I compare Disney to the real world I used this to show the reader how I
thought the world was as happy and perfect as Disney and television makes them out to be). I soon
came to the realization that the world is not so happy after all.
I got out of the car and walk into the doors of my new school, I was like Nemo when he got taken

how nervous and scared I was going to a new school.) I continue to be hopeful and started to

everyone was as welcoming as she was to me, I started to notice that people were being really

conversation from a group of girls in my class, "did you see the new girl she has the thickest accent

metaphor explaining how I felt when I found out that my accent was the thing limiting people from

Essay On Fire In Lord Of The Flies
Fire in Lord of the Flies
Don't play with fire. Fire is unpredictable, uncontainable, and its results are everlasting.
Nonetheless, fireplaces, campfires, and birthday candles, rouse the fascination of children and adults
because it is the universal symbol of human spirit. Fire has an intrinsic relationship with the spirit it
represents, radiating heat and light to create an impression of power and liveliness. The vivacious
flames are always dancing in different patterns, but maintain a degree of constancy. In William
Golding's novel, Lord of the Flies, fire is a prominent symbol of Ralph's hopeful spirit as he lives on
an isolated island with a group of other boys. Fire's recurring appearances throughout the novels
demonstrates that there is always hope in all situations regardless of the amount of resources, and
the threat of human savagery.
In the novel, fire makes a presence during when resources are abundant, and when resources are
scarce. When the boys first arrive on the island, Ralph, the undisputed leader, unites the boys and
has access to an ample supply of fruit trees, shelters, and meat with no threats to his power. Even
Jack and Ralph harmoniously work together, as the narrator described, "Together [Ralph and Jack],
joined in an effort by the burden [of the fire]" (Golding 39). As a result of the unity and resources,
he holds high spirits for the success of the newly built civilization. The fire burns bright and big in
the beginning, to indicate Ralph's high

The Theme Of Hope In Out Of The Dust By Karen Hesse
During the darkest of times in your life, you may think that all hope is lost. In the novel, Out of the
Dust, by Karen Hesse, Billie Jo is introduced, a young girl who lives in Oklahoma during the dust
bowl. During her life, Billie Jo faces many hardships and problems, but learns to never lose sight of
hope. Hesse develops many themes throughout the novel, hope being one of them. Even in the
darkest of times in life, the darkness will turn to light. Throughout her life, Billie Jo faces many
challenges. The one particular object that constantly affects her life is the dust. "'Daddy!' I called.
You can't stop dust!" (32) The dust is a whirling storm of death and depression that cannot be
stopped. That, however, is not the only problem Billie Jo must face. Later, she loses what every
child cherishes most, her beloved Ma. Billie Jo accidentally threw a pail of kerosine on Ma, and
that's just when the guilt begins. She attempts to save Ma, but only wounds her hands, Hope seems
lost to her because she cannot even find comfort in the piano, the only thing that helps her through
the hardships. People begin to point fingers and only blame Billie Jo, not her father who also caused
the accident. "They only said, Billie Jo threw the pail of kerosine." (72) This guilt pushes her into a
well of darkness. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Personal Narrative: When I Grow Up In America
What do you want to be when you grow up? When I was four, I wanted to be a princess, like

time I was nine, I was convinced I would be country star. I wanted to be the best of the best, and
stardom seemed like the way to do it. With Taylor Swift as my idol there was no way my plan could
go awry. Thirteen hit me and I decided I was too grown up for such childish desires, and my plans
changed to becoming a neurosurgeon. Today, if you were to ask me who I want to be when I grow

three things I have to do. I have to remain hopeful, become the best version of me that I can possibly
be, and most importantly, I have to pursue my dreams. These are my responsibilities to America. ...

Analysis Of The Movie ' Alfonso Cuaron ' Essay
Alfonso Cuaron, introduces us to a nation full of despair and destruction. The people seemed to be
lost in a deep melancholic state. Right at the beginning of the movie people appeared to be
devastated by the death of baby Diego, due to the fact that he was the youngest person on earth. This
film portrays us to a nation without children because humanity has become infertile. Infertility has
taken the world into a chaotic and paranoia stage. The government itself has indoctrinated paranoia
and despair on its own people, by condemning its people to live in a lawless nation full of war,
death, and destruction. Although it seems as if humanity is condemned to live without hope and
without a chance of a future, Theo's rejuvenation and transformation makes us see that hope can be
reawakened even in the most destructive and hopeless society; Theo transforms when Kee reveals
her pregnancy to him, and by giving hi life to safely this teenage pregnant girl through a journey full
of violence and danger, to reach a boat that represented a better future for her and her baby.
Throughout the movie it's obvious that the devastation of all humanity is caused by the infertility of
all women; infertility in the movie symbolizes a nation without a hopeful future. Even the current
future generation seems robotic and unsociable, like Theo's cousin's son. The people seemed to be
living in an unconscious and hopeless phase because the government has driven them to live this
way. Throughout the

Hope Is The Thing With Feathers By Emily Dickinson And...
The word hope is often used in moments of despair, more precisely to lift people out of those
moments. For so many, hope is the light at the end of the tunnel, in the moments when it is hard to
get back up it is often this ambiguous term that helps them get up. Of course, all words take on
several meanings, and there are always different ways someone can interpret a word. However,
according to the Oxford Online Dictionary hope is "a feeling of expectation and desire for a
particular thing to happen"(Oxford Dictionaries). More often than not, hope is a feeling rather than
something people express verbally. The poems ""Hope" is the thing with feathers" by Emily
Dickinson and "Dare I Hope?" by Sophia White both address the term hope. Although ... Show more

Both of the poems that I previously mentioned are focused around interpreting the term hope. As
seen in the paragraphs before, it is easy to interpret the word in different ways, and that is precisely
what these two poems are doing. Although both poems take their own approach to the word hope
and do not share the same structure, there are some consistencies between each author's
interpretation. Both the poems by Sophia White and Emily Dickinson are centered around hope,
however, the interpretations are very different, using symbols, metaphors and the structure of the
poem to get their points across. The poem ""Hope" is the thing with feathers" by Emily Dickinson
begins its first two lines with a metaphor. "That perches in the soul – And sings the tune without the
words"(2–3). These opening lines bring us into the rest of the poem where the author is describing
the word hope through the metaphor of a bird. Dickinson continues to use metaphors throughout the
poem. Later in the poem, she describes different aspects of hope. "And sore must be the storm/That
could abash the little Bird/That kept so many warm"(6–8). This section is referring to difficult times,
and telling us that hope does not falter when hardship comes. In this case, hardship is the storm. She
follows this by giving the reader a metaphor for where hope can be

The skill which I am going to discuss about is impulse...
The skill which I am going to discuss about is impulse control. It means regardless of what is asked
or done, one is unable to control the need to act upon something. In other words, impulse can be
described as an immediate action or reaction that is particularly evident in emotions. This is an
important skill in today's environment which can indicate the adaptability of an individual in an
external environment and potentially determine future success. For instance, if one is unable to
control his/her impulse and bursts out of anger at every occasion; that person may not be

SELF REGARD: It helps to assess both external capabilities and internal strength. It is an
individual's ability to maintain a positive self–view in terms of personality, self–esteem, and

virtues. In the EQ report, the result indicates that I am self–assured in my abilities to perform
responsibilities in various settings. Of course, it is a correct evaluation because I usually think of the
consequences of my actions upon others. I agree to anything with a full satisfactory level by seeing
the positive side alone. In my point of view, positive thought beats negativity. Rather than dwelling
on frustrations or things that cannot change, I will devise a plan of action and ask others for
assistance and advise to resolve the problems. For example, I asked my brother's suggestion before
selecting my course. He advised me to take an accounting course since it has lots of job vacancies in

Optimism And Hope In Good Will Hunting
The movie Good Will Hunting is about a twenty–year–old man Will, who works as a janitor at

Will solves another difficult question that professor posts, and he runs off as he catches him insisting
his anonymity. Will finds a connection with a psychologist and is able to find a purpose and good
direction in his life. The positive psychology principles that I want to focus on are optimism and
hope. Optimism is being able to look at situations from both points of view, such as negative or
positive outcomes. I think optimism is relevant in Good Will Hunting because it is expressed
through the main character of the movie. Will shows us how you can be happy by just being
yourself and not conforming to the norms of society. Will was not rich and did not go to a fancy
school, yet he portrayed how he did not need any of that to be happy. It was not the material items
that were holding him back to opening up, it was the emotional issues that he had going on within
himself. Will had a high intellect, yet he was content with working as a janitor and occasionally
hanging out with some of his friends for drinks. When Will meets a girl, who he later finds out is

Elie's Loss Of Innocence In The Holocaust
Approximately fourteen million people died during the Holocaust, and losing innocence was just a
part of the objectification process. After going through the process and staying alive, innocence
would be almost impossible to keep grasp of, considering the fact that once it is lost innocence can
never be regained. In Night on page 55, Elie said "He told us that having been chosen because of his
strength, he had been forced to place his own father's body into the furnace." Every time Elie heard

When Elie arrived at the camp he was already in the mindset that he needed to keep attention away
from himself because the second they got into the cattle car it is clear that Elie had already the first
of his youthful hope. Losing innocence happens to everyone at some point, but it is usually lost very
slowly and not completely. When innocence is lost as quickly and completely as it was for those in
the Holocaust, it is easy to argue that it is a mass tragedy. It is a tragedy to lose innocence that
brutally, there is no denying that, but as tragic is it may be, losing that innocence ended up being the
key to staying alive. Hope may go hand and hand with innocence, but after losing innocence it is
still possible to be hopeful. When Elie got out of Buchenwald, there is nothing anyone could show
him that would take away any more of his innocence. Still, even without innocence, Elie still
remained hopeful that things would get better. As he got older, Elie was able to see the world
attempt to reform itself which made it easier to be alive after seeing what Elie had. His whole life, it
was impossible to take away the things he had seen and give him his innocence, but after the camps
innocence no longer meant false hope. This freed him from the shackles of believing that hope was
only possible with innocence, although innocence makes life much easier, because Elie was able to
realize that you can strip someone of their clothes, take away their name, and treat them like pigs but
hope can't be

The Wife Of His Youth Analysis
"No matter how high up you get, never forget where you came from." is a quote relating to The Wife
of His Youth by Charles W. Chesnutt. This quote shows that no matter how rich or famous one
becomes they should never forget where they started in life with the people who were always there
for them. The Wife of His Youth is set within the early 1890's in Groveland, Ohio. During the time
period in which the story is set, slavery was beginning to come to a halt, leaving many African–
Americans to travel up North in search of a better and easier life. The story depicts the tragedies of
slavery and the many hardships that African–Americans had to overcome; in the case of the story,
those hardships were being separated from loved ones, arduous labor, and brutal treatment. It was
also the end of the Civil War, which meant that many slaves were being freed and were given more
rights, even though those rights were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ryder if he had seen a man by the name of Sam Taylor. Soon after asking this question, Liza begins
to tell Mr. Ryder about how the two were married 25 years ago, yet they were separated due to her
telling Sam that it was rumored that he would soon become a slave due to the death of his parents.
This in a result, led Sam to head North in search of freedom. Consequently, due to this Liza is
discovered to be the reason why Sam left, leaving her to take his place further down the river in the
South. Yet, after she has been freed, she began to search for Sam over the course of the next 25 years
in hopes of reuniting with him and continuing their life together. This shows the Liza Jane's
strengths as a caring, persistent, patient, devoted, and loyal character throughout the story. Notably,
this is seen when Liza is speaking of Sam, a sense of love and dedication are expressed by the way
she is speaking of her relationship with

The Glass Castle Analysis
The Glass Castle was a symbol of hope for all of the children, they counted on it for their future;
when it was forgotten about by their dad, the hope of a better future faded away along with the hope
they had in their father. This book was titled The Glass Castle for at least one main reason. This
novel describes Jeannette's childhood and one of the biggest things that she heard about during that
time was from her dad when he said that he was going to build a glass castle for their family. "When
Dad wasn't telling us about all the amazing things he had already done, he was telling us about the
wondrous things he was going to do. Like build the Glass Castle," (Walls 25). The title shows you
what she relied on as a child. It shows you where she found her hope and faith to make it through
the tough times. She saw the glass castle as a way to live in one place and stop moving around. She
liked the idea of living in a castle instead of little, dumpy homes that are falling apart. "All of Dad's
engineering skills and mathematical genius were coming together in one special project: a great big
house he was going to build for us in the desert," (Walls 25). He had promised them this, and she
expected him to follow through. The idea of the glass castle is a big theme and symbol throughout
the book, which is why it is also the title of the book. Throughout the book, the idea of a glass castle
isn't always brought up and recognized, but it's a main point made over and over. It is a

Active Hope By Joan Macy Quotes

  • 1. Active Hope By Joan Macy Quotes Active Hope, written by Joan Macy, is an interesting read that discusses many topics regarding social and environmental change in the modern world. Joan Macy employs many ideas to engage the reader into her point of view and outlines the book in a very different way that distinguishes it from other books. (Quote 1) To begin with "Reflecting on Success" on page 226; this part of the book inspired me. Her quote "If the change we want doesn't happen in our lifetime, does that mean we will never experience success? For the encouraging boost we get when we know we're moving forward, we need to find markers of progress we can spot more easily and often." Not only is this quote important but it can be relevant to many things we live through and foresee daily. For example, if one is trying to achieve a certain fitness goal, it is not the brightest outlook to just select a very far– fetched goal and not track small points of progress beforehand. In fact, if one was to do such a thing, it would be rather challenging since frustration and injury would occur before one could even see any results since the results are not being analyzed closely enough. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Without closely analyzing certain key points, success is rather construed to be a challenging task. Personally, if I was to complete a task at hand, it is best to try to tackle the task through breaking it down into small goals. Whether it is an essay I am writing or a 2 mile–run, it is important to recognize this relativity. I think if we can apply this to the issues and problems within the world of environmentalism, then hope and change as Macy believes will occur, however, on a relatively microscopic scale not foreseeable with the human ... • 3. Different Perspectives In Dickens And Charles Dickens's... If we want to make changes in our Lives, then we will have to look at the causes and the way we are using our minds, the way we are thinking. For, "No two things can occupy the same space at the same time. You can't have a positive thought & hold on to the negative one. Choose one." ~Louise Hay. We all have the will and heart, the courage and braveness to let go of the past and to learn from it, and not to dwell in it. So, after all how can something, be both positive and Negative at the same time. Well in a very simple way of putting it, an event can be both positive and negative at the same time. It all comes down on what perspective you are seeing the event from. For, different perspectives can show us stories in a whole other way and in a whole new light. During the book Tale of Two Cities written by Charles Dickens, you could see this view in many different ways. First, you could see how Carton spend a lot of time criticizing himself and imagining that he would never be able to change. This caused him to not even try and to just live life, in a sad state. Next, sacrifice can be positive and it usually means to have new beginnings. On the other hand, you are usually losing something dear to you, which hurts you for the rest of your life. That is why, no one should dwell in the past, but learn from it and move on. Lastly, courage could be a positive and at the same time a negative aspect. It all depends on our own personal perspective, or viewpoint. "It was the best ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Examples Of Hope In Night By Elie Wiesel "Hope is the only thing stronger than fear." –President Snow in The Hunger Games. The book Night by Elie Wiesel is a true story about the holocaust. In the story the main character, Elie, experiences terrible things. He is so hopeful that things are going to get better (after all how could they get any worse) and he is so fearful that his last bit of hope will be taken away and he will give up on life. Elie experiences the worst things that we can imagine. How could anyone have hope in such darkness? What could anyone fear when they have lost everything? "Never give up hope, no matter how dark things seem" –Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars: the Clone Wars. In the beginning of the story Elie is hopeful at every turn. He has a bright, hopeful future and then he and his family are taken away. When they are in the ghetto Elie is hopeful that he and his family won't have to leave. He hopes he and his family will be okay. However his hope is taken away from him. He and his family arrive and they take his group near a crematorium. Elie is hopeful that he and his father won't be taken into the crematorium's deadly fire. But when he gets inside the camp he wishes that he would have been killed by the deadly fire. Later on in the story Elie meets his Uncle Stein. His Uncle asks him how his wife and sons are doing. Elie doesn't have a clue but lies and says they are okay. This renews Uncle Stein's faith but later on his village comes to the camp and Stein discovers that they died a long time ago. This news crushed Stein and he died days later. He lost his hope. Elie watches this scene unravel and hopes that he won't lose his last bit of hope, his father. However he would soon lose him. "No! I yelled. He's(Elie's dad) not dead! Not yet!" Elie on page 93 in Night. Elie's last bit of hope, his only reason for living, is his father. His father slowly starts to fade away and Elie can't let him die, because then he'll be dead soon after. However what happened in their relationship might have been worse than him just dying. One day when he, his father, and a group of other prisoners are being transported. The prison guards began to throw bread in their transport and then men began fighting to the death. Elie watches a son attempt to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Night By Elie Wiesel: Book Analysis "When you have lost hope, you have lost everything. And when you think all is lost, when all is dire and bleak, there is always hope" (I Am Number Four Caruso). In life, when we give up hope, we give up everything. Our dreams are forever lost and the fight within us to live on is gone. Giving up hope is giving up on life. Even in the darkest moments of life there is always hope and that hope will keep you living. In the book Night, people either gave up hope of everything or held on to what little hope they had and lived to tell their story. A man named Meir Kratz lost hope and had no will to survive, and thus surrendered his life. Another person in the book, Akiba Drumer, lost all hope in life and eventually gave in to death. Eliezer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance, a boy named Juliek had hope up until his death. This hope is shown through Juliek's constant playing of his violin. Even when it seemed that death was inevitable, Juliek kept playing. This playing gave not only Juliek himself hope, but also everyone around him. Hope may not have saved Juliek, but Juliek's music helped saved others by spreading that hope amongst the prisoners. In this situation, it does not seem as if hope determined if one was to live. Juliek may have known that there was no way around his death. He knew that he was too weak and sick to go on, but instead of giving up hope he decided to grasp it and spread that hope on to others so that they may survive. Juliek's way of keeping his hope was through playing his violin. Juliek may have had no other way to hang on to hope. Therefore, the only reason Juliek died was because his body was too physically worn out. Instead of giving up hope when Juliek knew he was dying, he continued to play as a way to give hope to others. Another time in the book, two men were hung for possessing arms. People would disagree that hope did not determine survival in this situation. ""Long live liberty!"" (Wiesel 64). These were the words of the men as the were about to be hung. The two men had hope until they died, just as Juliek did. The men believed that justice would be served and that these times ... • 9. Flowers And The Symbol Of Flowers A symbol of purity, innocence or life, when connected to the motivation of a character, flowers have the ability to demonstrate a character's emotions and behaviors in a way that describing a character's physical and emotional appearance cannot. Vibrant flowers symbolize aspiration and determination while a wilted or destroyed flower represents a somber and heartbroken attitude toward life. The motif of the flowers in Paul's Case and The Chrysanthemums represent the progression of the characters' hope and dreams. In the opening scene of Paul's Case, the author notes the vibrant, red carnation that Paul wears to his disciplinary meeting and consequently the teacher's distaste of what they believe the flower symbolizes referring to it as a, "scandalous red carnation" and how, "his whole attitude was symbolized by...his flippantly red carnation flower" (Cather 114). A defiant student, shown by his disrespect toward his teachers, Paul seems unfazed to the fact that he is in a disciplinary meeting choosing to act indifferent to what his teachers say about him. He is arrogant consequently holding himself to a higher status than his teachers thus causing him to feel entitled. Saint Margaret Mary and the Promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus tells the astounding story of a french nun, from her painful and ailing childhood to her glorious visions of Jesus as a humble and healthy nun. During Margaret's lifetime , she grows in the virtues of obedience, loyalty, and piety. Throughout Margaret's Lifetime she develops the virtue of Obedience, by her words and actions . One morning, Margaret was planning to gather some wild flowers for Our lady's shrine but Aunt Benedicta forbade her to leave the house without permission and put her to work. Even though Margaret was very disappointed that she couldn't go pick flowers for Our Blessed Mother, Margaret obediently answered "I....I'll be glad to help" and though still very weak, Margaret obeyed, and did the list of things her aunt told her to do. In these lines, persona thinks that hope is like a singing bird, even though sometimes it doesn't speak to us, eternally it will stay permanent in us. Also by mentioning, hope as a permanent thing in inside of us, allows us to acquire most of what life gives to us. Hope has been the essential reason why Mariatu has the desire to continue her life while accepting who she is throughout the book The Bite of the Mango written by Mariatu Kamara and Susan McClelland. The exclusion to inclusion that Mariatu experiences because of hope portrays Jean Vanier's ideology throughout his book Becoming Human as he believes that individuals can influence and potentially change each other's life by just opening their hearts. Mariatu feels an excellent amount of love and compassion among her friend as she reveals her story to her "I like the way she smelled, like Ivory soap, and her body felt so warm beside me. She was used to the feeling of inclusion in Sierra Leone when she was sleeping due to her family members sleeping beside her, giving her a sense of safe and comfort. When she was in England, someone who she had looked at as a sister, realized that she was not having a good time. The charming women named Yaboom would sleep beside Mariatu asking her about her story. This causes Mariatu's heart to shine as she tells her story, having the sense that she matters. We no longer judge each other according to concepts of power and knowledge or according to group identity, but according to these personal, heart–to–heart encounters. We being the movement from exclusion to inclusion, from fear to trust, from closedness to openness, from judgement and prejudice to forgiveness and understanding. It is a movement of the heart. We begin to see each other as brothers and sisters in humanity. We are no longer governed by fear but by the heart" (Vanier 83). As Vanier explains through his ideology about listening to each other, he expresses the careness and emotion that can be provoked by listening to each other's stories. • 18. Lord Of The Flies Fire Symbolism Essay Don't play with fire. Fire is unpredictable, uncontainable, and its results are everlasting. Nonetheless, fireplaces, campfires, and birthday candles, rouse the fascination of children and adults because it is the universal symbol of spirit. Unlike conventional symbols, fire has an intrinsic relationship with the spirit it represents. A fire radiates heat and light to create an impression of power and liveliness. The vivacious flames are always dancing in different patterns, but maintain a degree of constancy. In the Lord of the Flies, fire is a prominent symbol of Ralph's hopeful spirit throughout the series of events on the island. Fire's recurring appearances throughout the novels demonstrates that there is always hope in all situations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Ralph discovers that Jack and his hunters neglect the fire, Jack provides a feeble excuse. "[Ralph to Jack] 'You let the fire go out.' [...] [Jack insists] 'You should have seen the blood!'" (Golding 70) When the hunters choose to hunt instead of tending the fire, it represents a descent from the original orderly civilization into savagery. In this scene, Golding hints that savagery threatens Ralph's hopeful mindset for a civilized tribe, but savagery does not kill hope. By the end of the book, all of the boys become hunters who are regarded as "savages", murder Ralph's faithful comrade Piggy, and steal the spectacles along with the fire; Ralph seems to be at rock bottom. Ralph has no one to turn to, nowhere to stay, and no plan for the future as he scrambles to escape a hunt, all the while, unable to see hope in his situation. The narrator speaks, "The best thing to do was to ignore this laden feeling about the heart, [...] no fire; no smoke; no rescue," (Golding). • 20. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green Optimism is an emotion that inspires hopefulness and confidence about the future. Optimism propels people and novels forward. Optimism is a driving force in the novel "Lord of The Flies" by William Golding and the novel "The Fault in Our Stars" by John Green. In the novel "Lord of the Flies",one of the most important emotions is optimism. Without optimism the boys would have no hope that they would make it off the island. At the start of the novel things are not going the boys way, their plane crashes in the middle of nowhere and they do not know what to do. The boys are in a state of chaos and they need a leader, the leader will soon be known as protagonist of the novel, Ralph. Ralph is elected by the boys and he is optimistic about the boys survival on the island."I'm chief," said Ralph, "because you chose me". [] Besides Ralph the other 2 main leaders are Piggy and Simon. Piggy is the brains of the group but Simon is something else. Simon is pure and genuine, he believes in the good of all of the boys on the island and that they will survive. "You'll get back to where you came from." (7.15) Ralph and Simon are the two optimists in a time of peril and without them the group would not be able to function. Another important example of optimism in "Lord of The Flies" are the usages of signs by the boys. The boys use these signs to help ease the reality of what is really happening on the island. Imagine having to live in an annex for 3 years while a war is going on or having been kicked out of your home by your own mom. Those both happened to Anne Frank and Marcus, but they still had hope. Both "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "Freedom Writers" teach readers that you should have hope even in the hardest of times. There are many ways that this having hope even when life is hard is shown in "Freedom Writers". • 26. Family Systems Theory Of Hope Research There has been much research surrounding hope as a theory, form of treatment, and its application in both psychotherapy and health industries. In his research Snyder was able to corroborate his hypothesis that people are likely to think in terms of goals and are constantly finding and refining way to accomplish those goals (2002). Participants also often spoke about the connection between those pathways and their motivations. Snyder found that hope was a form of motivation for goal attainment, and was directly related to positive outcome measured by the degree of hopefulness or a hope scale (2002). He concluded that hope is a primary way of thinking and emotions played a lesser secondary role. Collective research shows that the degree of hopefulness is also related to the probability and proximity of goal attainment. Those with short or intermediate goals typically show higher levels of hope than those with long–term or seemingly impossible targets. • 28. Analysis Of The Bicycle Thieves Two scenes from the Bicycle Thieves that although they have nothing to do with the plot they are essential for the film are: the scene where many bicycles and parts of them are being sold in a piazza, this is an important scene because it adds to the film a feeling of optimism that ends up turning into hopelessness. The other scene is the one where the thief has an epileptic fit adding to the film a feeling of despair. These two scenes also contributes to the overall meaning of the plot by showing us that the harder you try to accomplish what you want in life the more obstacles you will have and the more hopelessness you will fell. The first scene where bicycles are being sold at the piazza is very important. Ricci is hopeful at first, and so are the watchers, that he will be able to find his bike at that place and all his problems will be solved. He looks everywhere for it, at first it seems like his bike might be there because there is an overwhelmingly amount of bicycles and pieces of them and the people around him helping him are very optimistic, but as he keeps looking and looking things start getting more complicated because every bike, tire, bell, and frame he sees could belong to his bike giving him hope that he has found it but the moment he realizes is not his, the hopes he had to find it sinks deeper. • 30. Metamorphosis And Estranged Labor: Film Analysis Most human beings hope for something, whether it be a brighter future or equal rights for all. Hope is the idea that keeps people sane during the darkest moments. Through Frank Kafka's, "Metamorphosis," the story of a young man who is turned into a grotesque bug, David Lynch's film , Eraserhead, and Karl Marx's "Estranged Labor," the theme of whether or not hope is reasonable in times of darkness is one of the most prominent amongst all of the three. In "Metamorphosis" and "Estranged Labor," the reader is able to witness deteriorating hope in times of despair in the form of Gregor Samsa and his family in Kafka's piece and the alienated worker in Marx's. Legend by Marie Lu is a dystopian story about Day, a slum sector teen criminal, and June, a wealthy military prodigy. Marie Lu uses Day's pendant to symbolize the hope and freedom Day and June yearn for. In the beginning of Legend, Marie Lu uses Day's pendant to symbolize the hope and freedom that he lost after "failing" his Trials and yearns for. An additional reason Day misses his pendant, is because as shown on page 57, "I reach up to touch my pendant for comfort.." The purpose of the pendent changes as before it helped remind him of his family, but now it helps comfort him. His tone quickly takes a sharp turn into humorous denial, perhaps another past thought of what he thought life in Canada would be like; "No one starved in Canada; that only happened in such places as India or Africa. Nonetheless, fireplaces, campfires, and birthday candles, rouse the fascination of children and adults because it is the universal symbol of human spirit. Fire has an intrinsic relationship with the spirit it represents, radiating heat and light to create an impression of power and liveliness. The vivacious flames are always dancing in different patterns, but maintain a degree of constancy. In William Golding's novel, Lord of the Flies, fire is a prominent symbol of Ralph's hopeful spirit as he lives on an isolated island with a group of other boys. Fire's recurring appearances throughout the novels demonstrates that there is always hope in all situations regardless of the amount of resources, and the threat of human savagery. In the novel, fire makes a presence during when resources are abundant, and when resources are scarce. When the boys first arrive on the island, Ralph, the undisputed leader, unites the boys and has access to an ample supply of fruit trees, shelters, and meat with no threats to his power. Even Jack and Ralph harmoniously work together, as the narrator described, "Together [Ralph and Jack], joined in an effort by the burden [of the fire]" (Golding 39). • 58. Personal Narrative: When I Grow Up In America What do you want to be when you grow up? When I was four, I wanted to be a princess, like Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty; except, without the evil step–family and the vengeful evil queen hunting me. I wanted the pretty dress; and let's be honest, I wanted the handsome prince. By the time I was nine, I was convinced I would be country star. I wanted to be the best of the best, and stardom seemed like the way to do it. With Taylor Swift as my idol there was no way my plan could go awry. Thirteen hit me and I decided I was too grown up for such childish desires, and my plans changed to becoming a neurosurgeon. Today, if you were to ask me who I want to be when I grow up, my reply would be that I have no clue. I can only tell you three things I want to do; the same three things I have to do. I have to remain hopeful, become the best version of me that I can possibly be, and most importantly, I have to pursue my dreams. These are my responsibilities to America. ... • 62. Analysis Of The Movie ' Alfonso Cuaron ' Essay Alfonso Cuaron, introduces us to a nation full of despair and destruction. The people seemed to be lost in a deep melancholic state. Right at the beginning of the movie people appeared to be devastated by the death of baby Diego, due to the fact that he was the youngest person on earth. This film portrays us to a nation without children because humanity has become infertile. Infertility has taken the world into a chaotic and paranoia stage. The government itself has indoctrinated paranoia and despair on its own people, by condemning its people to live in a lawless nation full of war, death, and destruction. Although it seems as if humanity is condemned to live without hope and without a chance of a future, Theo's rejuvenation and transformation makes us see that hope can be reawakened even in the most destructive and hopeless society; Theo transforms when Kee reveals her pregnancy to him, and by giving hi life to safely this teenage pregnant girl through a journey full of violence and danger, to reach a boat that represented a better future for her and her baby. Throughout the movie it's obvious that the devastation of all humanity is caused by the infertility of all women; infertility in the movie symbolizes a nation without a hopeful future. Even the current future generation seems robotic and unsociable, like Theo's cousin's son. The people seemed to be living in an unconscious and hopeless phase because the government has driven them to live this way. Throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 64. Hope Is The Thing With Feathers By Emily Dickinson And... The word hope is often used in moments of despair, more precisely to lift people out of those moments. For so many, hope is the light at the end of the tunnel, in the moments when it is hard to get back up it is often this ambiguous term that helps them get up. Of course, all words take on several meanings, and there are always different ways someone can interpret a word. However, according to the Oxford Online Dictionary hope is "a feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen"(Oxford Dictionaries). More often than not, hope is a feeling rather than something people express verbally. The poems ""Hope" is the thing with feathers" by Emily Dickinson and "Dare I Hope?" by Sophia White both address the term hope. Although ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both of the poems that I previously mentioned are focused around interpreting the term hope. As seen in the paragraphs before, it is easy to interpret the word in different ways, and that is precisely what these two poems are doing. Although both poems take their own approach to the word hope and do not share the same structure, there are some consistencies between each author's interpretation. Both the poems by Sophia White and Emily Dickinson are centered around hope, however, the interpretations are very different, using symbols, metaphors and the structure of the poem to get their points across. The poem ""Hope" is the thing with feathers" by Emily Dickinson begins its first two lines with a metaphor. "That perches in the soul – And sings the tune without the words"(2–3). These opening lines bring us into the rest of the poem where the author is describing the word hope through the metaphor of a bird. Dickinson continues to use metaphors throughout the poem. Later in the poem, she describes different aspects of hope. "And sore must be the storm/That could abash the little Bird/That kept so many warm"(6–8). This section is referring to difficult times, and telling us that hope does not falter when hardship comes. In this case, hardship is the storm. She follows this by giving the reader a metaphor for where hope can be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When we encounter a location or a person that has been transformed, we are hopeful, but also fearful, to encounter the toll the change has had on them. In the short stories titled "The Return" and "A Marker on the Side of a Boat" the protagonists are absent from a location that is significant to them. Upon their returns, they are disappointed to find that change has swept away everything they used to know. It means regardless of what is asked or done, one is unable to control the need to act upon something. In other words, impulse can be described as an immediate action or reaction that is particularly evident in emotions. This is an important skill in today's environment which can indicate the adaptability of an individual in an external environment and potentially determine future success. For instance, if one is unable to control his/her impulse and bursts out of anger at every occasion; that person may not be emotionally fit to be successful because of the lack of self–control on their impulses. In the EQ report, the result indicates that I am self–assured in my abilities to perform responsibilities in various settings. Of course, it is a correct evaluation because I usually think of the consequences of my actions upon others. I agree to anything with a full satisfactory level by seeing the positive side alone. In my point of view, positive thought beats negativity. Rather than dwelling on frustrations or things that cannot change, I will devise a plan of action and ask others for assistance and advise to resolve the problems. For example, I asked my brother's suggestion before selecting my course. He advised me to take an accounting course since it has lots of job vacancies in Canada and it gives me a different experience in this field. Will solves another difficult question that professor posts, and he runs off as he catches him insisting his anonymity. Will finds a connection with a psychologist and is able to find a purpose and good direction in his life. The positive psychology principles that I want to focus on are optimism and hope. Optimism is being able to look at situations from both points of view, such as negative or positive outcomes. I think optimism is relevant in Good Will Hunting because it is expressed through the main character of the movie. Will shows us how you can be happy by just being yourself and not conforming to the norms of society. Will was not rich and did not go to a fancy school, yet he portrayed how he did not need any of that to be happy. It was not the material items that were holding him back to opening up, it was the emotional issues that he had going on within himself. Will had a high intellect, yet he was content with working as a janitor and occasionally hanging out with some of his friends for drinks. When Will meets a girl, who he later finds out is going to graduate from Harvard and then go onto medical school at Stanford. I think that Skylar's stability in her life made him feel ... After going through the process and staying alive, innocence would be almost impossible to keep grasp of, considering the fact that once it is lost innocence can never be regained. In Night on page 55, Elie said "He told us that having been chosen because of his strength, he had been forced to place his own father's body into the furnace." Every time Elie heard something as terrible as this he lost innocence but gained wisdom in a sense of avoiding death. When Elie arrived at the camp he was already in the mindset that he needed to keep attention away from himself because the second they got into the cattle car it is clear that Elie had already the first of his youthful hope. Losing innocence happens to everyone at some point, but it is usually lost very slowly and not completely. When innocence is lost as quickly and completely as it was for those in the Holocaust, it is easy to argue that it is a mass tragedy. It is a tragedy to lose innocence that brutally, there is no denying that, but as tragic is it may be, losing that innocence ended up being the key to staying alive. Hope may go hand and hand with innocence, but after losing innocence it is still possible to be hopeful. When Elie got out of Buchenwald, there is nothing anyone could show him that would take away any more of his innocence. Still, even without innocence, Elie still remained hopeful that things would get better. As he got older, Elie was able to see the world attempt to reform itself which made it easier to be alive after seeing what Elie had. His whole life, it was impossible to take away the things he had seen and give him his innocence, but after the camps innocence no longer meant false hope. This freed him from the shackles of believing that hope was only possible with innocence, although innocence makes life much easier, because Elie was able to realize that you can strip someone of their clothes, take away their name, and treat them like pigs but hope can't be ... The Glass Castle Analysis The Glass Castle was a symbol of hope for all of the children, they counted on it for their future; when it was forgotten about by their dad, the hope of a better future faded away along with the hope they had in their father. This book was titled The Glass Castle for at least one main reason. This novel describes Jeannette's childhood and one of the biggest things that she heard about during that time was from her dad when he said that he was going to build a glass castle for their family. "When Dad wasn't telling us about all the amazing things he had already done, he was telling us about the wondrous things he was going to do. Like build the Glass Castle," (Walls 25). The title shows you what she relied on as a child. It shows you where she found her hope and faith to make it through the tough times. She saw the glass castle as a way to live in one place and stop moving around. She liked the idea of living in a castle instead of little, dumpy homes that are falling apart. "All of Dad's engineering skills and mathematical genius were coming together in one special project: a great big house he was going to build for us in the desert," (Walls 25). He had promised them this, and she expected him to follow through. The idea of the glass castle is a big theme and symbol throughout the book, which is why it is also the title of the book.
