Fashion Industry Research Paper
Employment
In the fashion industry, there are those who work in the manufacturing sector and others in the retail sector of the industry. The UK fashion and textile
sectors take in an estimated 600000 people and this make the United Kingdom one of the largest fashion employers in Europe.Education
Fashion education is one of the most important factors in maintaining the UK's status as one of the major fashion industries in the world. Its
contribution to the economy is measured in the wages and salaries of the staff involved in teaching fashion related courses in UK institutions.
According to the Higher Education Statistics Agency, 60285 students studied design courses with 2565 staff; the design courses also encompass
courses such as furnishing and multimedia design. It is estimated that 9275 out of the students undertook a fashion course. The academic wages
amounted to ВЈ16million, which created 395 jobs.
Creative Activities
This involves work carried out by fashion photographers, creative directors, stylists and makeup and hair artists. The ONS Annual Survey of Hours
and Earnings indicates that the gross salary for photographers in 2009 was ВЈ26,301. This suggests that the value added of UK photographers is about
ВЈ5million, which created 207 jobs. Although there was no grouping available for other careers in this pathway such as fashion consultants, it is
assumed that its value to the economy is alike to that of fashion photographers.

Fashion Week's Impact on American Society
Question
When I was young, I had a large appeal with fashion week. My friend and I would impersonate the runway models in my living room, dressing up in
my mother's clothes and laying stuffed animals out like attendees. This fascination carried into high school, I found it as an opportunity to demonstrate
my style to a larger audience. Fashion week was intriguing to me because it provided a way to express myself in a unique way and show a side of my
own creativity. I anticipated this project would give me a chance to learn more about the role fashion week plays in society.
The information I know about fashion week was gathered from personal exposure to fashion week. I know fashion week occurs twice a year and
covers the fall and spring ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I decided to break my research into separate categories based on the thick questions I had written. On Wikipedia there were various recommended
sources listed such as "How the runway took off", which helped widen my research as well as gather more evidence. Next, I searched "fashion
week, economy" in Google's search bar, this search provided loads of information leaving me with surplus evidence relating to fashion week's
effect on the economy. Also, I researched "fashion week, social" and "social standards, fashion week", which is how I covered the majority of my
section on fashion/fashion week's effects on social distinctions and social classes. Lastly, I had to find at least one source that was not web related,
so I went to my local library and asked the librarian for books relating to fashion week. Unfortunately, she did not know of any books and suggested
me to the encyclopedia, yet the encyclopedia did not offer anything on fashion week it provided a wide range of information regarding fashion.
The three most useful sources during my research are as follows: "New York Fashion Week", "New York Fashion Week: The Numbers and
Economic Benefits behind the World's Biggest Fashion Show", and "Undressing Fashion". Wikipedia's article, "New York Fashion Week", provided
loads of information on the basis of fashion week and the history. It proved to be a credible source because it was a well known professional

The Negative Effects of the Fashion Industry on Eating...

The Negative Effects of the Fashion Industry on Eating Disorders
While it's fashion week in London, the size "zero" models start to prepare for the big show by purging to be as thin as possible. Most models starve
themselves in order to achieve the "waif", stick–thin figure; it becomes so addictive, almost like second nature that it further leads to serious eating
disorders. From recent studies, today's model weighs about 23% less than the normal woman. Clearly, most models do not depict the average woman.
Men and women all over the world follow the influences that the fashion industry provides. They believe that the fashion industry depicts on what
society should be acknowledged as, picture–perfect thin. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A large contributing factor to this problem is that many people in the fashion world encourage the use of overly thin models in editorials and fashion
shows. For example, as Kathryn Shattuck, What's On Today: [The Arts/Cultural Desk], mentions that Kelly Cutrone, world renowned fashion publicist,
encourages, "Clothes look better on thin people. The fabric hangs better" (1). The fashion industry's emphasis on being thin and its use of extremely
underweight models in unacceptable. Many people would agree that the fashion industry plays the majority role in eating disorders, but Lisa Hilton,
British Voguewriter, disagrees. Hilton argues, "Its objective is selling clothes, and the consensus remains that in order to achieve this, models need to
be thin . . . Fashion is about fantasy, about impossibility, about, dare we say it, art. Most women can't tell the difference" (1). Hilton condescendingly
continues to refute the criticisms that models are too thin and the fashion industry encourages eating disorders.
More recently, Sports Illustrated model, Kate Upton whom is a size 4, is now considered a plus size model and deemed to be "too curvy". In the
United States the "normal" sized woman is between the size of 6 and 10. Most of us do not understand why some put themselves through so much
anguish to satisfy these body image complexes. Back in the 1950's, models were

If There Is An Artist
If there is an artist, who can challenge the coexistence of beauty and ugliness, it's Bart Hess. Hess is not only a believer of the beauty in ugly, he pushes
his fascination for the human body constantly, exploring and manipulating textile design, to create tactile textures and surfaces within material which
blur the boundary between human and new species. His work becomes a questionable object of perception. During his graduation project at
Eindhoven Design Academy, Hess worked on a series of fake furs, made out of metals, silicone and plastics. The idea of the soft, fluffy, tactile quality
of fur being lost, transcending when coming into contact, it becomes a cold, sharp, dangerous object. Row upon Row of endless needles inserted into ...

Then photographing their bodies using the most peculiar of materials, they created fascinating and simultaneously repugnant images of Globules of
Foam engulfing the body, asymmetric spines, bulged oversized muscled forms. What becomes more apparent within the photographs, the disturbing
blank expressions, the non–existent emotional state of the subject, just starring back at you. It is not horrified or excited about the change of their
form, they are merely present and allow themselves to be shown to you. It's a purely visceral and visually arresting experience, that sort of lucid
acceptance, clearly not hiding the kind of imperfections and oddities that society mostly trains us to be ashamed of. They are unnervingly confident
about themselves. Lucy and Bart's photographs, no matter how unnerving they might be, present us with a strong character, something to possibly
compare with the likes of Picasso and Da Vinci's painted subjects. The rest is up to the viewer.
There's something so primal and immediate about seeing human bodies mutated. It calls into questions all of our ideals about beauty and they way we
judge people based on their surfaces. This odd sort of artistic mingling – where the colours are beautiful, but the shapes are grotesque – is really jarring.
Or maybe it's the way they seem to know something about their aberrations that we don't. Like we've yet to have any idea the kind of powers that lie
inside their new bodies and hands and faces, and as long

is through the units I have studied and the practical work I have completed. I have also discovered the incredible sense of achievement you obtain

have found that these skills are valuable and somewhat essential when working on events. As I am a very creative person I have found Events to be
a subject that suits my interests and personality. Since high school I have been interested in the arts and still enjoy painting and drawing in my spare

I hope that by completing my course at college and then going on to study Events Management at university I will be able to seek a career organising

creative skills and interests and believe I am well suited to these areas in particular. Specifically, T in the

Social Factors That Changed The World
Clothing became less expensive in the 1960's because of the Industrial Revolution, so more people are seen being involved in popular fashion trends
and expressing themselves in ways they please because of the affordability. The sharply angled Vidal Sassoon hair style where women cut their hair
shorter and styled it in an angular way. This decade also started the trend of people wanting to look skinnier. Designers preferred models looked
younger, thinner, and had longer legs. Social factors occurring at the time also effected fashion and helped represent people's beliefs. AndrГ©
CourrГЁge 's came out with many new fashions that reflected America's involvement in the Space Race with Russia during that time and our
achievement for having sent a person to the moon. This space age caused CourrГЁge to come out with designs that resemble space suits which
included: silver sequined pants, white plastic–like boots, and white sunglasses with slits. CourrГЁge also came out with a regular suit that had a
geometrically cut jacket and angled collar which became a big hit. In the 1970's, many fashions were inspired by the "hippie look" and many clothes
were becoming handmade again. Hair was often worn long and straight or rolled into corkscrew curls and loose waves. Hot pants, tie dyed shirts, bell
bottoms, and flared pants worn with platform shoes became a hit. Jeans also became a standard clothing worn by many and towards the end of the

Fashion Analysis : Fashion Week
Nations across the world unite in so many ways. Whether it be the Super Bowl, or the Olympics, there are always things that can bring people together.
Fashion Week is one of them. Fashion Week brings artists, designers, and audiences from across the world together in the name of art. However, the
importance of Fashion Week cannot be expressed without first discussing its history.
Fashion Week allows fashion designers to display their designs to a worldwide audience (Fortini para. 10). Basically, Fashion Week is a time during
which the industry's most prestigious designers set their forthcoming collections on display in a sequence of presentations and runway shows (Soo
Hoo para. 2). Designers of fashion week display their collections created for the upcoming season (Soo Hoo para. 4). Fashion Weeks in September
through October are designed to display spring/summer racks, while February through March shows are reserved for autumn/winter racks (Soo Hoo
para. 4). Fashion Week begins with New York, London,Milan, and Paris immediately following the end of the previous cities' fashion week (Soo Hoo
para. 4). Multiple other runway show sequences are held throughout the year, such as Haute Couture and Swim Week (Soo Hoo para. 4). However, these
shows are separate and have no association with Fashion Week (Soo Hoo para. 4).
The goal of a designer is to impress the audience as much as possible without forgetting the theme of the season (Soo Hoo para. 14). Not all designers

Size Zero Fashion Models Should be Banned
Throughout the years, models have been progressively been getting skinnier. "Size 6 (UK size 10) was a normal size" (Littlejohn). There are many
downsides to the super thin models of today. They cause unattainable standards of beauty for people which leads to eating disorders such as bulimia,
anorexia, and binge eating. This is affecting models and teenage girls the most, peoples health is being sacrificed for "fashion", and it needs to stop.
Models are the ones being directly affected by this epidemic. Modeling is hard, so models will do whatever they need to succeed. When you're a
model, size zero is what's in demand, what the designers are looking for (Lee). Most models think that it is required and expected of them to have
to be hospitalized because they don't eat enough. One model says, "No, no. It is my job not to eat." Some have resorted to extreme measures, "A
couple of the others have resorted to eating tissues. Apparently they swell up and fill your stomach" (Clements). No one should ever feel like they
need to eat tissues so they can be beautiful. Beauty is relative and just a concept we've made in our heads, so it can't even be defined. The common
size of models, a size zero, "requires the waist measurements of twenty three inches, which is the average size for an eight year old" (Size Zero). Why
is this the standard? This epidemic is also an issue for our youth, particularly in young girls. "50% of girls between the ages of 11 and 13 see

Your Future With Brand Building
INTRODUCTION
Brand Building and Management is when a consumable item is being marketed or sold to a consumer or retailer. Building is known as creating,
constructing, developing something, being it a house, a car, a product, possibly even a person (Justin Bieber for example), and also including, a brand.
Developing the brand to grow larger, grow stronger, increase the demographic variety to use/consume the brand, to increase and better the brand all
together. Management– this is where the "w" questions will be asked; "Who?" will be managing your brand, "why?" would you let this person manage
your brand, and so on.
Brand Building is defined by QFinance 2009 as: "the establishment and improvement of a brand's identity, including giving the brand a set of values
that the consumer wants, recognizes, identifies with, and trusts. Values developed in the process of brand building include psychological, physical, and
functional properties that consumers desire and should always identify a property that is unique to that brand."
Management is defined by Brevis, Cronje, Smit and Vrba as the necessary activities for an organisation to function, by using the process of
controlling, organizing, leading and planning of the available resources to achieve goals by using as little of the resources as possible.

How the Trickle-Down Theory Works in China Essay
How the trickle–down theory works in China
The Trickle–down theory, a well–known theory in fashion industry, has significant meaning in 19th to 20th century Europe. The American economist
and sociologist, Veblen, published The theory of the Leisure Class by 1899, in which he discussed the split between the leisure class and the
industrial class in the US critically. He concluded that leisure class treats dress as a sign of their status and possessions, furthermore, 'Dress must not
only be conspicuously expensive and inconvenient; it must at the same time be up to date'(Veblen 1994), by saying that, he refers to upper class was

However people have little idea about how fashion trends flow in both ancient and contemporary Chinese society, which is an essential issue no matter
when people want to explore Chinese fashion history, or promote brands and run their business in China in the future. Actually, in the Han dynasty
(206BC–220AD), the trickle–down theory worked in the Chinese Royal Palace. At that time, it is said that all the maid–in–waitings in imperial palaces
stimulated the Empress Xiaocheng, Feiyan Zhao (32BC–1BC), wearing fairy retaining skirts (Barbara 2000). And according to Lang huan ji which was
a classic novel written by Shizhen Yi, a scholar in the Yuan dynasty (1206
–1368), in the Tang dynasty (618AD–907AD), young girls loved to
manipulate imperial Concubine's and Princess's makeup and hair styles, which indicated that fashion flows from the upper class, such as royal family,
to general people. But inevitably, the study had its own limitation, sometimes, things in China influenced by several specific factors, such as traditional
Asian culture and social classes, in addition to that, the situation of contemporary China is more complicated which was because of ideology, social
structures and fashion industry of China are so different from European countries. This essay will discuss that how the trickle–down theory works in

pieces to create create an ultimate look. My favourite aspect about her style is that her outfits can be termed as vintage, classic and edgy , all at the
same time and that is extremely impressive. Her style is very much dependent on layering. Anything provocative is a definite no for her. Her signature
style ' The Breton tee , the Chelsea boot and the duffel coat ' are very much London–street inspired. Denim shorts are a fashion necessity to her. She

My First Shopping Trip
I reminisce the time like it was yesterday, the white tile along the floor as I walked by my mom 's side, my fragile body shivering from the
coldness I felt, my eyes taking quick glimpses of everything near me. I can just imagine how my pupils dilated from the excitement of all the
beautiful things I saw. At that moment I didn 't realize my first shopping trip would have such an impact on my future. I can recall the amazing
feeling I felt when I purchased my first outfit. Why would this mean so much to me? I was born with an identical twin. For 7 years of my life, I
wore the exact same thing as my sister. I was always known as a twin ,when I picked out my first outfit everything changed. It was a way for me to
make a new identity for myself. I love being a twin, but some people do not understand that we are so different. Fashion is a way for me to express who
I am.
For as long as I can remember I have always been dedicated to make my dreams possible. I was so determined to make my dreams happen that at
the young age of ten I began taking sewing lessons. A year after that my parents signed me up for summer art workshops. At first I was horrible at
drawing, but as time passed and as I got older I got very good. At the age of fourteen I got so talented that my art teacher started entering me into local
and national art contests. I won many awards including The Scholastic Art Award , Brain

How The Silver Screen Affects Women 's Fashion Trends?
How the Silver Screen Affects Women's Fashion Trends?
Today/Throughout History? Silver screen has the capacity to make not just a star of its leading women, but a fashion icon too. From Audrey Hepburn
and Grace Kelly to Julia Roberts and Keira Knightley, via Mia Farrow and Catherine Deneuve, some of Hollywood 's most successful stars owe a lot to
their on–screen style. Moreover, during the 21st century, movies have been a powerful media in which to influence people's style. Movies gave
society a great way to see vintage fashion, including how to wear period accessories that accompany the clothing. As Esquevin's (2008) state that in the

That means the 1910 's has been very important to modern day fashion. Throughout the 1920s, American women began to closely follow the
clothing, hairstyles, and makeup worn by movie stars (Roberts, A. 2013). In short, as seen from the fashion designer 's desk, LaVine (1980)
illustrated that newspapers, fashion magazines, and the movies themselves opened up certain avenues to view the apparel of their favorite stars,
both on and off the screen. During the early years of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, on the other hand, people were having a few options for
clothing due to WWII, which caused a ration on fabric. However, there were two main styles for adolescents, greaser or preppie. In short, greaser had
the rebellious look with denim jeans and black leather jackets. Preppies, on the other hand, wore poodle skirts, scoop neck blouses and cardigans. One
of the fashion trend that appeared during the golden age was the extravagant costumes, which including luxurious materials such as feathers, beads, and

Individuals and groups are interdependent in their use of social norms; they both influence each other's behaviour (Postmes et al. 2000). By adopting

In this SNS driven society, such a theory cannot be used anymore. With Instagram, the image is not the only source of information as various other
elements are of importance as well. For example, the use of hashtags and the use of image manipulations such as filters influences the images greatly
and all add to the context of a post. Although the Instagram posts all show almost intuitive aesthetic data, a qualitative investigation is needed to
understand what is shown precisely in the images and what this tells us about identity performance. The theory which is most suitable here is visual
anthropology, which draws on contextual information (Van Leeuwen and Jewitt 2001). As a way of interpreting the online identity the visual output of
the individual was categorised. As mentioned before, images cannot be interpreted without their context. Instagram posts in particular already give a lot
of context as they often mention a location which may express prestige and have an accompanying title and

Brand Manager For Topshop Is The Most Difficult Market
TOPSHOP is mid level high street and it is possibly the most difficult market to sell products in. This is because it requires a lot of specific
branding to strongly create an extremely clear consumer market. The products are neither cheap, which removes the appeal to those wanting throw
away or value products, or the luxury market, which would see the items as low quality. However, if placed correctly, it creates some of the most
loyal consumers there are today. Products are designed for the core customer in terms of materials, embellishments, shape, colour and style, and the
business is very focused on every aspect of their customer in the way that it runs. This can include how quickly new items get added to the store and
where the stores are located. Their target audience are offered a number of different styles and trends every season and the products can range from
ВЈ20 – ВЈ150, with some occasional cheaper and expensive products added at specific times. Jane Shepherdson, brand manager for TOPSHOP says:
'Officially our target market is 15 to 30 year–old women, but internally we target everyone who loves fashion, regardless of age or income. ' TOPSHOP

The Unattainable Standards of the Fashion World
Most people think of the fashion industry as a materialistic world of extravagant, overpriced, un–wearable clothing. Where anorexic, and yet extremely
beautiful women use their looks to sell you a product that they themselves probably don't even like. They think of an industry that sets the most
unattainable standards and lowers the self–esteem of young women to zero. They think of it as a world where everyone is judged and no one will ever
be pleased...and in the end none of it even matters because they're all just clothes, but I do not.
You may be asking yourself, "Why isfashion important?". Clothes are not just clothes. They aren't just what you wear. Clothes are personal and
intimate. The clothes you wear send a public message to others about the way you see yourself (regardless of whether or not you want them to). It's
really all about branding. From the minute you take the hanger off the rack, you are creating an image. Clothes can even transform you, that shirt you
just "threw on" this morning can give you an enormous boost of confidence. How powerful is it that a piece of fabric can make you look and feel
differently.
iThere are many in the industry that truly possess great personal style and have major influence in the fashion world. From the red carpets to street
style, these ladies can do no wrong. One major movie starlet, Jennifer Lawrence, has become quite the fashionista. What she'll wear next, there's no
way to tell, but it'll most definitely be Dior. J

Bethan Gray Essay
Bethan Gray is an award winning Welsh designer that has an unusual but impressive family origin. Her ancestors originate from an ancient Rajasthani

heritage wove its way into being some of Bethan Grays's main influences and inspirations, which pull ideas shown within craft traditions of both the

Personal Statement
Growing up in the Philippines I wasn't really aware about the fashion world. However, when I transferred in Milan (Italy) back in 2012, it opened my

applying for this course to enhance my skills and to maximize my knowledge about what fashion really is.

However like with any industry, things are changing and developments always occurring which are affecting many parts of the fashion industry.
Tungate goes on to highlight the most obvious development is the availability on the web. The images of a show are displayed less than an hour
after the designer has taken a bow. With this easy accessibility there is becoming less and less need for buyers to attend shows and instead they are
able to choose their key pieces right from their own offices. Tungate also recognizes that private 'pre collection' gatherings in showrooms are
taking place before the actual show. This gives the buyer a chance to place their orders without the 'razza matazz and overheads' (Tungate,2004,12)
of a show. One may ask that if 70% of stock is being sold at pre collections ( Tungate,2004,12) then why is it necessary for designers to stage a show
at all? This comes back to what we mentioned earlier about showcasing the brand .A show is no longer about selling a particular garment it is about
selling the look and that is McDowells justification into its considerable costs. He believes that a show easily costs ВЈ150,000 and this sum cannot be
used just for the designers indulgence,it has to serve a purpose.
Let's take a look at what Tungate might mean when using the word 'razzmatazz'. Perhaps the best example for us to look at is Karl Lagerfelds Fall

Descriptive Essay About Fashion
There were times when women were restricted to wear certain garments like a skirt that does not go past the knee, pants, and anything men considered
sexy. Through trials and tribulations women have defied all odds with fashion. When I think of fashion I think of self–expression, thanks to the women
before me. One woman who fully inspired my fashion sense, is Betsey Johnson. With her fun, unique, and colorful fashion lines, she helped me to
find my style. She is also a huge inspiration to me, as a fashion designer. Betsey Johnson is a fashion designer, well known for her eccentric but
ladylike designs; Puffy skirts to make you feel like a beautiful ballerina, embellishments to make you sparkle and shine when your seen, and
eye–catching accessories that make you want to buy her garments. Her childhood interest of dance and costume laid the foundation for her creativity.
Betsey attended Pratt Institute and later graduated from Syracuse University. She did not in fact go to school for fashion design, but her creative juices
pulled her toward fashion. Upon finishing school Betsey landed an internship with Mademoiselle publication. She won a contest at the magazine, thus
triggering her career; Fulltime fashion designer for Paraphernalia, made known a boutique called "Betsey Bunky Nini," and other successful ventures
she did. Although she has quite the success story, she has had a fair amount of mishaps as well. She put out her own collection in 1978, that did

  • 1. Fashion Industry Research Paper Employment In the fashion industry, there are those who work in the manufacturing sector and others in the retail sector of the industry. The UK fashion and textile sectors take in an estimated 600000 people and this make the United Kingdom one of the largest fashion employers in Europe.Education Fashion education is one of the most important factors in maintaining the UK's status as one of the major fashion industries in the world. Its contribution to the economy is measured in the wages and salaries of the staff involved in teaching fashion related courses in UK institutions. According to the Higher Education Statistics Agency, 60285 students studied design courses with 2565 staff; the design courses also encompass courses such as furnishing and multimedia design. It is estimated that 9275 out of the students undertook a fashion course. The academic wages amounted to ВЈ16million, which created 395 jobs. Creative Activities This involves work carried out by fashion photographers, creative directors, stylists and makeup and hair artists. The ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings indicates that the gross salary for photographers in 2009 was ВЈ26,301. This suggests that the value added of UK photographers is about ВЈ5million, which created 207 jobs. Although there was no grouping available for other careers in this pathway such as fashion consultants, it is assumed that its value to the economy is alike to that of fashion photographers. • 7. Fashion Week's Impact on American Society Question When I was young, I had a large appeal with fashion week. My friend and I would impersonate the runway models in my living room, dressing up in my mother's clothes and laying stuffed animals out like attendees. This fascination carried into high school, I found it as an opportunity to demonstrate my style to a larger audience. Fashion week was intriguing to me because it provided a way to express myself in a unique way and show a side of my own creativity. I anticipated this project would give me a chance to learn more about the role fashion week plays in society. Also, I researched "fashion week, social" and "social standards, fashion week", which is how I covered the majority of my section on fashion/fashion week's effects on social distinctions and social classes. Lastly, I had to find at least one source that was not web related, so I went to my local library and asked the librarian for books relating to fashion week. Unfortunately, she did not know of any books and suggested me to the encyclopedia, yet the encyclopedia did not offer anything on fashion week it provided a wide range of information regarding fashion. The three most useful sources during my research are as follows: "New York Fashion Week", "New York Fashion Week: The Numbers and Economic Benefits behind the World's Biggest Fashion Show", and "Undressing Fashion". Wikipedia's article, "New York Fashion Week", provided loads of information on the basis of fashion week and the history. • 11. The Negative Effects of the Fashion Industry on Eating... ENG 150 18 October 2012 The Negative Effects of the Fashion Industry on Eating Disorders While it's fashion week in London, the size "zero" models start to prepare for the big show by purging to be as thin as possible. Most models starve themselves in order to achieve the "waif", stick–thin figure; it becomes so addictive, almost like second nature that it further leads to serious eating disorders. From recent studies, today's model weighs about 23% less than the normal woman. Clearly, most models do not depict the average woman. Men and women all over the world follow the influences that the fashion industry provides. They believe that the fashion industry depicts on what society should be acknowledged as, picture–perfect thin. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A large contributing factor to this problem is that many people in the fashion world encourage the use of overly thin models in editorials and fashion shows. For example, as Kathryn Shattuck, What's On Today: [The Arts/Cultural Desk], mentions that Kelly Cutrone, world renowned fashion publicist, encourages, "Clothes look better on thin people. The fabric hangs better" (1). The fashion industry's emphasis on being thin and its use of extremely underweight models in unacceptable. Many people would agree that the fashion industry plays the majority role in eating disorders, but Lisa Hilton, British Voguewriter, disagrees. Hilton argues, "Its objective is selling clothes, and the consensus remains that in order to achieve this, models need to be thin . . . Fashion is about fantasy, about impossibility, about, dare we say it, art. Most women can't tell the difference" (1). Hilton condescendingly continues to refute the criticisms that models are too thin and the fashion industry encourages eating disorders. More recently, Sports Illustrated model, Kate Upton whom is a size 4, is now considered a plus size model and deemed to be "too curvy". In the United States the "normal" sized woman is between the size of 6 and 10. Most of us do not understand why some put themselves through so much anguish to satisfy these body image complexes. Hess is not only a believer of the beauty in ugly, he pushes his fascination for the human body constantly, exploring and manipulating textile design, to create tactile textures and surfaces within material which blur the boundary between human and new species. His work becomes a questionable object of perception. During his graduation project at Eindhoven Design Academy, Hess worked on a series of fake furs, made out of metals, silicone and plastics. The idea of the soft, fluffy, tactile quality of fur being lost, transcending when coming into contact, it becomes a cold, sharp, dangerous object. Row upon Row of endless needles inserted into ... Then photographing their bodies using the most peculiar of materials, they created fascinating and simultaneously repugnant images of Globules of Foam engulfing the body, asymmetric spines, bulged oversized muscled forms. What becomes more apparent within the photographs, the disturbing blank expressions, the non–existent emotional state of the subject, just starring back at you. It is not horrified or excited about the change of their form, they are merely present and allow themselves to be shown to you. It's a purely visceral and visually arresting experience, that sort of lucid acceptance, clearly not hiding the kind of imperfections and oddities that society mostly trains us to be ashamed of. This is affecting models and teenage girls the most, peoples health is being sacrificed for "fashion", and it needs to stop. Models are the ones being directly affected by this epidemic. Modeling is hard, so models will do whatever they need to succeed. When you're a model, size zero is what's in demand, what the designers are looking for (Lee). Most models think that it is required and expected of them to have to be hospitalized because they don't eat enough. One model says, "No, no. It is my job not to eat." Some have resorted to extreme measures, "A couple of the others have resorted to eating tissues. Apparently they swell up and fill your stomach" (Clements). No one should ever feel like they need to eat tissues so they can be beautiful. Beauty is relative and just a concept we've made in our heads, so it can't even be defined. The common size of models, a size zero, "requires the waist measurements of twenty three inches, which is the average size for an eight year old" (Size Zero). You may be asking yourself, "Why isfashion important?". Clothes are not just clothes. They aren't just what you wear. Clothes are personal and intimate. The clothes you wear send a public message to others about the way you see yourself (regardless of whether or not you want them to). It's really all about branding. From the minute you take the hanger off the rack, you are creating an image. Clothes can even transform you, that shirt you just "threw on" this morning can give you an enormous boost of confidence. How powerful is it that a piece of fabric can make you look and feel differently. iThere are many in the industry that truly possess great personal style and have major influence in the fashion world. From the red carpets to street style, these ladies can do no wrong. One major movie starlet, Jennifer Lawrence, has become quite the fashionista. • 36. Bethan Gray Essay Bethan Gray is an award winning Welsh designer that has an unusual but impressive family origin. Her ancestors originate from an ancient Rajasthani clan that spent many hundreds of years journeying across Arabia and Persia before choosing to remain in the Celtic region of Wales. This very heritage wove its way into being some of Bethan Grays's main influences and inspirations, which pull ideas shown within craft traditions of both the East and West. These influences are reflected in Gray's style, showing a clear passion of detail, tactile textures, and extravagant materials such as rare stones, wood, marble and hand–tooled leather. • 37. Fashion Personal Statement Essay Personal Statement Growing up in the Philippines I wasn't really aware about the fashion world. However, when I transferred in Milan (Italy) back in 2012, it opened my eyes to its beauty; from well–structured buildings and green parks to famous Italian cuisine and well–known fashion houses. This city introduced me into a new world; a world that I should have known before. Since then my interest and love for the fashion world continues to grow. Therefore, I'm applying for this course to enhance my skills and to maximize my knowledge about what fashion really is. Before to me fashion was just a word, used to describe a piece of clothing of what's in or what's out, but now every time I hear the word fashion, a lot of things come running to my mind: fabrics, textures, colours and shapes. Also, this program helped us prepare ourselves both mentally and physically on what we're going to face in the future, if we're going to pursue a profession in the continuous growth of the fashion industry; it also really helped me improve a lot, not just academically but also personally. On my third year, I was able to work for a tailoring shop with amazing people that taught me basic clothing repairs and some new sewing techniques. The owner of the shop actually entrusted me with a small production of eighty walkie–talkie bags for Milano's EXPO 2015. For others it may seem like silly sewing small pouches, but for me, it was a very important project as it was for an important event. On my fourth year, I worked as an assistant tailor at a costume shop for theatre plays and operas that are held around the globe. I also volunteered at some fashion shows during Milan Fashion Weeks (MFW), like Daizy Shely's debut at Teatro Armani, Helen Anthony, Stella Jean and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. What Is the Role of Fashion Promotion, and How Will It... What is the role of fashion Promotion within the fashion Industry, and how will it develop over the next five years? In an age where fashion and technology is constantly evolving it is important that we take a step back and take a look at the current happenings in the promotional side of the fashion industry. The fashion show,a key tool to making designers collections accessible to its consumer, will be the main focus of this essay. We shall define fashion promotion before looking at how the catwalk sits under this title. A brief history of the fashion show shall lead us into the present day, where we shall begin the debate of whether some fashion shows need be as extravagant and expensive as they are. We will look at well known ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However like with any industry, things are changing and developments always occurring which are affecting many parts of the fashion industry. Tungate goes on to highlight the most obvious development is the availability on the web. The images of a show are displayed less than an hour after the designer has taken a bow. With this easy accessibility there is becoming less and less need for buyers to attend shows and instead they are able to choose their key pieces right from their own offices. Tungate also recognizes that private 'pre collection' gatherings in showrooms are taking place before the actual show. This gives the buyer a chance to place their orders without the 'razza matazz and overheads' (Tungate,2004,12) of a show. One may ask that if 70% of stock is being sold at pre collections ( Tungate,2004,12) then why is it necessary for designers to stage a show at all? This comes back to what we mentioned earlier about showcasing the brand .A show is no longer about selling a particular garment it is about selling the look and that is McDowells justification into its considerable costs. He believes that a show easily costs ВЈ150,000 and this sum cannot be used just for the designers indulgence,it has to serve a purpose. Let's take a look at what Tungate might mean when using the word 'razzmatazz'. Perhaps the best example for us to look at is Karl Lagerfelds Fall /Winter 07 collection that was ... Special Study Proposal: How has the wearable sculpture of Alexander McQueen, Iris Van Herpen and Lucy McRae influenced contemporary everyday fashion? Introduction: The Special Study topic I plan to construct, concentrates on the relationships between that of the art form 'wearable sculpture' and contemporary, everyday fashions. I will delve into each of their distinctive unique worlds and discover their boundaries, their contrasts and comparisons, their influences and the designers behind the creations. These particular concepts will be examined in relation to three artists, namely Alexander McQueen, Iris Van Herpen and Lucy McRae; who's ambitious, irrational art work and determined personalities have influenced my individual thoughts and designs throughout my practical studies, where I am currently designing my own wearable sculpture fashions, based on recycling and re–using old products. I intend to explore the reasoning behind the creations of the irrational, enthusiastic outfits and what the designers where considering and imagining when planning, manufacturing and exhibiting them. Throughout my study proposal, I will provide a straightforward indication of how my Special Study will be organized, constantly making sure each of my chosen methodologies closely relate to my title so as not to go off course and gather unrelated feedback. This will include the use of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Descriptive Essay About Fashion There were times when women were restricted to wear certain garments like a skirt that does not go past the knee, pants, and anything men considered sexy. Through trials and tribulations women have defied all odds with fashion. When I think of fashion I think of self–expression, thanks to the women before me. One woman who fully inspired my fashion sense, is Betsey Johnson. With her fun, unique, and colorful fashion lines, she helped me to find my style. She is also a huge inspiration to me, as a fashion designer. Betsey Johnson is a fashion designer, well known for her eccentric but ladylike designs; Puffy skirts to make you feel like a beautiful ballerina, embellishments to make you sparkle and shine when your seen, and eye–catching accessories that make you want to buy her garments. Her childhood interest of dance and costume laid the foundation for her creativity. Betsey attended Pratt Institute and later graduated from Syracuse University. She did not in fact go to school for fashion design, but her creative juices pulled her toward fashion. Upon finishing school Betsey landed an internship with Mademoiselle publication. She won a contest at the magazine, thus triggering her career; Fulltime fashion designer for Paraphernalia, made known a boutique called "Betsey Bunky Nini," and other successful ventures she did. Although she has quite the success story, she has had a fair amount of mishaps as well. She put out her own collection in 1978, that did exceptional well, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
