formally entrenched a constitution, withstood two attempts by the Quebec's provincial government to secede from the federation, and undertaken a

Racism is like an epidemic in that it is spread by communities and affects thousands of lives every day. It is shown through speech and actions from
the age range of children to elders. When in effect, racism can become violent and flip lives upside down. Fast forward past all the civil rights
movements and efforts to halt racism, and today's society still has an abundance of racism. Eradicating racism all together has been the goal since the

a select group of white students placed cotton balls throughout the lawn of the Black Student Union. Since these said students were white and rich, they
got away with it. This lack of punishment from authority for such a horrendous act created an uprising within the Union. Not only did they peacefully
protest, but one member went on a hunger strike to gain attention. The school refused to partake in the expulsion of the students and requests of
equality from the union, so the one member continued her hunger strike. Soon after this refusal of acknowledgment, the said member was sent to the
hospital as she had passed out and almost lost her life. Even after this event, the school wanted to ignore her actions and keep the students.

Women History Reflection
After learning about Women's History, my eyes were not only opened up to the difficult challenges faced in the past, but opened up to see the beauty
of today. This Women's History class altered my perspectives, introduced me to significant changes, and gave me the knowledge to know what my
obligations are as a woman today.

Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote a letter called, "Letter from Birmingham Jail". This letter was written to clergymen who criticized his nonviolent
approach. It was written in 1963 during the height of the Civil Rights movement. This letter's purpose is to show the way that King felt about his
movement to create a more equal society than what he was living in and what he thought about his nonviolent acts contrary to the clergyman. In the
beginning of this text, there is a letter from the clergymen that critiques the protest that King led. The clergymen essentially say that King's protest is
unwise and there are better ways to fix the problem of racial friction. They write:
Just as we formerly pointed out that "hatred and violence have no sanction in our religious and political traditions," we also point out that such actions
as incite to hatred and violence, however technically peaceful those actions may be, have not contributed to the resolution of our local problems.(372)
The clergymen continue to state that the Negro community should completely stop participating in these protests and handle the issue in the courts.
The rest of the text is King's response to the clergymen. He first states that the clergymen only mentioned the problem and not what caused it by writing:

He is saying that they are complaining about the fact that they are protesting in their town, but really they should be thinking about what they are doing

King then goes on to talk about the segregation in Birmingham and he writes, "On the basis of these conditions, Negro leaders sought to negotiate with

All human beings are entitled to equality and justice through our legal system and the state must accommodate to the rights of the minority groups.

Even before the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's, lawmakers were attempting to right the wrongs of over two hundred and forty five years of
slavery and oppression of minorities in the United States. In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued a directive forbidding defense contractors
from using racially discriminatory hiring practices (Week) and on May 17, 1954 the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the provisions of Plessy v.
Ferguson, which allowed for "separate but equal" public facilities, including public schools. The unanimous decision in the case of Brown v. Board of
Education of Topeka, Kansas declared that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal" thus ending federal tolerance of racial segregation

This idea of admission "quotas" was short lived however and in 1978 the Supreme Court in the case of Regents of University of California v. Bakke
ruled that colleges cannot use racial quotas because it violated the Equal Protection Clause, but race can be used as one factor for college admission
(Week). Affirmative action originated as a type of redistribution policy or tool to aid in the social and economic mobility of minorities. In regards to
