2. Age: Well the age of the characters is quite young, 17/18
which is not a stereotypical mental disorder age in thriller
films, they usually have children or adults in their mid-30’s.
Gender: In our thriller film we had the female as the main
character which goes against the stereotype of men being the
main characters. Although it may seem the man is in control
of the relationship as he asked his girlfriend to get things for
him and she obeys, which shows the stereotypical ‘women do
anything their men ask’ but the fact that she is ready to kill
her boyfriend, this shows the side to a woman that is seen
less as men are the ones who are capable of
killing as they are, stereotypically, the stronger
sex.
3. Social Class: Class was not heavily shown in our opening
as we did not focus on it but the characters were those of
a working class. The mise en scene and the accents of the
characters gave this away.
Ethnicity/ Race: Alfred is Albanian and I am Indian and
as we were in an interracial relationship this showed
there was no superior race. It may have gone against
some people’s views who believe interracial relationship
are wrong.
4. Occupation: The occupations were also another thing
that was not heavily focused on but as they were a young
couple living in a house together it showed that they
may be students and part time workers.
Special Interest: Video games, TV, Horror & Thriller
films, Media
5. The film Monster is a film about a female
prostitute who becomes a serial killer. Her
character is quite confident and domineering.
She is also very protective of her lover who is also
a female. This contrasts to our character in our
thriller opening because even though we have a
female killer she is not as domineering. She
seems quite normal, and listens to her boyfriend
in the beginning. Her attitude is quite respectful.
In Monster, the female character is a prostitute. This is quite
stereotypical as usually people would associate prostitutes as drug
addicts who will do anything for money. They become mentally
unhealthy and this drives them to kill. This is different to our thriller
as the female is not under any distress or is coming from a broken
home.
6. Jennifer’s body is about a cheerleader who is mentally
unstable and seduces men and kills them. To stay alive
she eats their flesh. Sexuality plays a big part in this film
as the female lead seduces men to kill them,
representing women as a sex symbol and the seductive
nature of a woman can be used to kill. Monster and
Jennifer’s Body both have a female serial killer s who have
a mental disorder. Most of the thrillers with a female
lead choose to give their character a mental disorder.
This goes with the stereotypical ‘women are too weak to
be killers by choice so there must be something mentally
wrong with them’ mentality.
