Pressure equalization or tympanostomy tubes (PET) are small tubes placed in the eardrum to allow fluid and pressure to drain from the middle ear into the ear canal. PETs are inserted during a brief outpatient procedure using an operating microscope. A small incision is made in the eardrum, fluid is suctioned out, and the tube is placed. PETs typically remain in place for 6-24 months to alleviate chronic ear infections.
