This document contains definitions of medical terminology related to the eye, ear, nose and throat. It defines terms such as pressure equalizing tube, otitis media, emmetropia, exotropia, extraocular movement and visual acuity. It also provides descriptions of bone conduction, recurrent ear infections, and chronic ear infections.
4. Smalltube surgically placed in a child’s
eardrum to assist in drainage of trapped fluid
and to equalize pressure between the middle
ear cavity and the atmosphere
5. Recurrent ear infections: more than five
episodes of infection in a 12 month period or
more than three infections per year for two
or more years
Chronic ear infections that do not respond to
appropriate courses of antibiotics
Chronic serous otitis that has not responded
to medical intervention
Hearing loss related to longstanding serous
effusion
6. Bone conduction is the sound to the inner ear
through the bones of the skull
Bone conducton is the reason why your voice
sounds different to you when it is recorded
and played back
The red marking shows bone
conduction from one's own voice and
from an implanted vibrator. The
blue marking shows air conduction
from one's own voice

7. OM is an infection and/or inflammation of
the middle ear
A cold or other respiratory infection can
lead to ear infections or inflammation
Symptoms may include fever, ear pain, and a
feeling of fullness in the ear
May be treated with over-the counter
medications or topical anesthetic drops
8. Emmetropia - the normal refractive
condition of the eye in which with
accommodation relaxed parallel rays of light
are all brought accurately to a focus upon
the retina
Exotropia - eyes that turn outward; it is the
opposite of crossed eyes, or esotropia.
9. Eye
movement as performed by the 6 ocular
movements
10. Sharpness of vision, measured by the ability
to discern letters or numbers at a given
distance according to a fixed standard
20/20 vision is a term used to express normal
visual acuity
