Chapter 10, Section 2
ο‚ž Another way that a new organism can be
produced.
ο‚ž Two sex cells are formed from cells in
reproductive organs
ο‚ž The joining of the sex cells, (egg from
female, sperm from male) is called
fertilization
ο‚ž The cell that forms is called a zygote.
ο‚ž Generally, the egg and the sperm come from
two different organisms of the same species.
ο‚ž Following fertilization, cell division begins
ο‚ž When cells have pairs of similar
chromosomes
ο‚ž Body cells (which far out number sex cells)
ο‚ž Brain, skin, bones, other tissues and organs
are formed from body cells
ο‚ž 46 chromosomes in each body cell (23 pairs)
ο‚ž Each chromosome has a mate that is similar
to it in size and shape, with similar DNA.
ο‚ž Sex cells
ο‚ž Chromosomes are not in pairs
ο‚ž Only half the number of chromosomes than
body cells
ο‚ž β€œsingle form”
ο‚ž 23 chromosomes, no pairs
ο‚ž (They haven’t matched up yet)
ο‚ž Meiosis is the process that produces haploid
sex cells.
ο‚ž Meiosis ensures that the offspring will have
the same diploid number as its parent
ο‚ž After two haploid sex cells combine, a
diploid zygote is produced that develops into
a new diploid organism
ο‚ž During meiosis, two divisions of the nucleus
occur.
ο‚ž The two divisions are called Meiosis 1 and
Meiosis II.
ο‚ž Just as in mitosis, each chromosome is
duplicated before meiosis begins.
ο‚ž The events of Prophase I are similar to those
of prophase in mitosis. In meiosis, each
duplicated chromosome comes near its
similar duplicated mate. (In mitosis, they do
not come near each other)
ο‚ž Pairs of duplicated chromosomes line up in
the center of the cell
ο‚ž The centromere of each chromatid pair
becomes attached to one spindle fiber so the
chromatids do not separate
ο‚ž The two pairs of chromatids of each similar
pair move away from each other to opposite
ends of the cell.
ο‚ž Each duplicated chromosome still has two
chromatids.
ο‚ž The cytoplasm divides
ο‚ž Two new cells form
ο‚ž Each new cell has one duplicated
chromosome from each similar pair
ο‚ž The two cells formed during meiosis I now
begin Meiosis II.
ο‚ž The chromatids of each duplicated
chromosome will be separated during this
division.
ο‚ž The duplicated chromosomes and spindle
fibers reappear in each new cell.
ο‚ž The duplicated chromosomes move to the
center of the cell
ο‚ž Unlike what occurs in metaphase I, each
centromere now attaches to two spindle
fibers instead of one.
ο‚ž The centromere divides
ο‚ž The chromatids separate and move to
opposite ends of the cell
ο‚ž Each chromatid is now an individual
chromosome
ο‚ž The spindle fibers disappear
ο‚ž A nuclear membrane forms around the
chromosomes at each end of the cell.
ο‚ž When meiosis II is finished, the cytoplasm
divides.
ο‚ž Two cells form during Meiosis I
ο‚ž In Meiosis II, both of these cells form two
cells.
ο‚ž The two divisions of the nucleus result in
four sex cells.
ο‚ž Each has one-half the number of
chromosomes in its nucleus that was in the
original nucleus.
ο‚ž From a human cell with 46 paired
chromosomes, meiosis produces four sex
cells each with 23 unpaired chromosomes
ο‚ž Meiosis occurs many times in reproductive
organs.
ο‚ž Mistakes may produce sex cells with too
many or too few chromosomes.
ο‚ž Sometimes zygotes die.
ο‚ž If the zygote lives, every cell in the organism
that grows from that zygote usually will
have the wrong number of chromosomes.
ο‚ž Organisms with the wrong number of
chromosomes may not grow normally.

  • 5. ο‚ž Sex cells ο‚ž Chromosomes are not in pairs ο‚ž Only half the number of chromosomes than body cells ο‚ž β€œsingle form” ο‚ž 23 chromosomes, no pairs ο‚ž (They haven’t matched up yet)
  • 6. ο‚ž Meiosis is the process that produces haploid sex cells. ο‚ž Meiosis ensures that the offspring will have the same diploid number as its parent ο‚ž After two haploid sex cells combine, a diploid zygote is produced that develops into a new diploid organism
  • 7. ο‚ž During meiosis, two divisions of the nucleus occur. ο‚ž The two divisions are called Meiosis 1 and Meiosis II.
  • 8. ο‚ž Just as in mitosis, each chromosome is duplicated before meiosis begins. ο‚ž The events of Prophase I are similar to those of prophase in mitosis. In meiosis, each duplicated chromosome comes near its similar duplicated mate. (In mitosis, they do not come near each other)
  • 9. ο‚ž Pairs of duplicated chromosomes line up in the center of the cell ο‚ž The centromere of each chromatid pair becomes attached to one spindle fiber so the chromatids do not separate
  • 10. ο‚ž The two pairs of chromatids of each similar pair move away from each other to opposite ends of the cell. ο‚ž Each duplicated chromosome still has two chromatids.
  • 11. ο‚ž The cytoplasm divides ο‚ž Two new cells form ο‚ž Each new cell has one duplicated chromosome from each similar pair
  • 12. ο‚ž The two cells formed during meiosis I now begin Meiosis II. ο‚ž The chromatids of each duplicated chromosome will be separated during this division.
  • 13. ο‚ž The duplicated chromosomes and spindle fibers reappear in each new cell.
  • 14. ο‚ž The duplicated chromosomes move to the center of the cell ο‚ž Unlike what occurs in metaphase I, each centromere now attaches to two spindle fibers instead of one.
  • 15. ο‚ž The centromere divides ο‚ž The chromatids separate and move to opposite ends of the cell ο‚ž Each chromatid is now an individual chromosome
  • 16. ο‚ž The spindle fibers disappear ο‚ž A nuclear membrane forms around the chromosomes at each end of the cell. ο‚ž When meiosis II is finished, the cytoplasm divides.
  • 17. ο‚ž Two cells form during Meiosis I ο‚ž In Meiosis II, both of these cells form two cells. ο‚ž The two divisions of the nucleus result in four sex cells. ο‚ž Each has one-half the number of chromosomes in its nucleus that was in the original nucleus. ο‚ž From a human cell with 46 paired chromosomes, meiosis produces four sex cells each with 23 unpaired chromosomes
  • 18. ο‚ž Meiosis occurs many times in reproductive organs. ο‚ž Mistakes may produce sex cells with too many or too few chromosomes. ο‚ž Sometimes zygotes die. ο‚ž If the zygote lives, every cell in the organism that grows from that zygote usually will have the wrong number of chromosomes. ο‚ž Organisms with the wrong number of chromosomes may not grow normally.
