Democracy 13
1. Warm –up – pens, paper, journal, books, note
(note) Unionists want to keep the link (union) between Britain and
Northern Ireland. Nationalist want a united Ireland. (Peacefully)
Loyalists and republicans believe in violence to achieve this.
(Discuss) What do you think the benefits are of the union? What do
Northern Ireland get from their connection to Britain?
Homework
Will be action report.
Skills
Exploring options and managing information.
Today's Objectives
1. Examine Northern Ireland and the peace process.
2. Look at 10 possible solutions to the events of Northern Ireland.
Heading: Democracy 13 Date:
2. We’re skipping lesson 74, the mechanics of the Northern
Ireland Government and how many councillors /
constituencies they have.
We are going to read pages 253 to 255 of the book.
We will take notes along the way examining how the violence
has been tackled and solutions that have been tried.
You’ll then examine a similar situation in your activity books
which gives 10 possible solutions. We’ll discuss could any of
those solutions apply to real life.
Plan for today
3. I will need about twenty-two people to read today. Raise hands after
each part.
(Note) This is not a religious war. The troubles of Northern Ireland
are based on their constitutional status, whether they remain part of
the United Kingdom or not.
(Note) Anglo-Irish Agreement 1985 – gave the Irish government an
advisory role in Northern Irelands government.
(Note) 1996: decommissioning (getting rid of) guns in Northern
Ireland is seen as the only way to peace.
(Note) The Belfast Agreement agreed on the relationship between
The Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and The United Kingdom.
Discuss – why do you think disarmament (no guns) was important.

4. I will need about a dozen more people to read. Raise hands after
each part.
(Note) 2001: 14 year old boy lost his arm and eye in an explosion.
2002: Two teens seriously injured by a trap bomb. Of the 3700
people murdered by the IRA , 1800 of them have been civilians.
(Note)2005: the IRA admits violence hurt their cause more than it
helped.
(Note) Devolution of power: handing power down to a local level.
In this case, from the UK to Northern Ireland.
(Note) Stormont Castle or House is Northern Ireland’s parliament.
Task– Activity book page 97. Rank the ideas from 1-10, 1 best, 10
worst.
