Intersectionality And Morality
Intersectionality is a relevant theory for some gay, lesbian or bisexual individuals. Intersectionality studies "the relationships among multiple
dimensions and modalities of social relationships and subject formations" (McCall, 2005). The theory argues, pursues and considers how gender, race,
sexual orientation and other categories of identity interact on many and often concurring levels of social relationships, therefore allowing discrimination
and social inequity. Intersectionality explains how the notion of social injustice, such as racism, sexism, homophobia, and belief–based bigotry such as
religion are not independent of one another; instead, they are interconnected, and thereby reflect "intersectionality" in regards to social ... Show more

Every day in the United States, a young person, under the age of eighteen faces homelessness, and most often it's because of others. In a report by
The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, it was noted that 26% of LGBTQ youth were kicked out of their homes when they came out (Ray, 2006).
The Urban Justice League reports numbers as high as 78% of LGBTQ youth that "were removed from or left their foster care placements because they
were un–welcoming or hostile towards their sexual orientation and/or gender identity " (Feinstein, Greenblatt, Hass, Kohn, & Rana, 2001). The United
States is an independent, individualistic country; we prize the freedom of expression, but do we really? One of the most significant, if not the most
important, social structures is the family. Gay, lesbian and bisexual individuals who are aware of their sexuality, must create an alternative self to
present to family and friends, especially if there is an understanding, verbalized or implicit, that homosexuality is not tolerated, or simply wrong. Many
gay, lesbian and bisexual men and women would rather go with the flow, assimilate, not make waves, rather than to express their own gay identity, and
risk ostracism.
When race is factored into the equation of homosexuality, it becomes more complicated. Taking a look at Black and Latino cultures over the past ten to
twenty years, there was an emergence of

The Controversy Of Homophobia During World War II Essay
In the recent years there has been a growing concern about the impact of homophobia. In the United States, few endeavors were made to make backing
bunches supporting gay and lesbian connections until after World War II, albeit prewar gay life prospered in urban focuses, for example, Greenwich
Village and Harlem amid the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. The interruptions of World War II permitted earlier detached gay men and ladies to
meet as fighters, war laborers, and different volunteers evacuated from residential communities and posted around the world. More noteworthy
mindfulness, combined with Senator Joseph McCarthy 's examination of gay people holding government occupations amid the mid 1950s, prompted
the primary American–based political requests for reasonable treatment in psychological wellbeing, open strategy, and vocation. Until the passing of
the Sexual Offences Bill in 1967, male homosexual activity was illegal. Gay men were frequently imprisoned for consensual sex with another man.
Lesbianism was not illegal, but was similarly subject to public disapproval, or ignored.

Despite the dangers and difficulties involved, gay men
and women were able to find places to meet. The Minorities Research Group (MRG) was formed in 1964, and provided isolated lesbians with
resources and information about female homosexuality and the opportunity to meet other women" (Allan Horsfall 2014). "Through the 1980s, as the
gay male community was decimated by the AIDS epidemic, demands

Cat On A Hot Tin Roof Analysis
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is written by Tennessee Williams, a gay American playwright from a hard life. Set in the 50s, the duration of the Cat play
reviews the conflict between truth and illusion. Set in the 50s on a Mississippi plantation, Williams presents, Brick, an alcoholic ex–athlete who refuses
to sleep with his vivacious wife, Maggie the "cat", supposedly out of guilt over the suicide of his old friend, Skipper: what Brick is unable to confront
is his own, and Skipper's, latent homosexuality. Williams was known for putting his own life into his works and the question of Brick's inheritance and
"click", goes along with Williams wanting to show the internal struggles of a man and his responsibility not only to his family but also to himself, and
whether it is better to live by lies or truth, while showing a piece of his life.
Cat is not structured in a traditional sense, unlike normal plays with divided up scenes, Cat is divided into just three acts. There is continuous action
that mimics the chaotic actions of a family in distress, like most real life families they never stop fighting, playing, and being around each other. The
play is characterized as a dramatic southern gothic work, although it can be argued as a mix of Gothic Southern Drama and Postmodernism. The
Southern Gothic style seeks to explore social issues and reveal the cultural character of the American South. We can find some evidence of this in the
postmodernist representation of the family and themes

Has Media Portrayal of Homosexuality Shifted/Changed...
Has Media Portrayal of Homosexuality Shifted/Changed Attitudes About the Subject?
Introduction Attitudes about homosexuality have shifted greatly over the past 40 years, beginning with the sexual revolution of the 1960s. Mass
media appears to have played a major role in more widespread acceptance of homosexuality, however negative perceptions still exist. In order to probe
the level of acceptance among college students and what shapes their perceptions of homosexuality, a study was conducted by surveying male and
female students at Morehouse and Spelman colleges. The purpose of this study is to statistically determine if attitudes toward homosexuality have
changed or shifted due to the media's consistent portrayal of it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shift was huge during this time because while most people were growing up with or surrounded by heterosexuality, an acceptance of
homosexuality was beginning to take hold. Programs such as Love Sidney, Dynasty, Heartbeat, Melrose Place, and Will and Grace portrayed
homosexuality through leading and supporting characters and helped to shift the paradigm of attitudes toward gays, lesbians, and bisexuals (Fisher,
2007). The positive media portrayal of homosexuality has been shown to influence the beliefs and attitudes of heterosexuals because often, "the
world, as seen in the media, is perceived by its viewers as an accurate reflection of reality" (Fisher, 2007). Since so many viewers at that time had
little or no personal experience with homosexuals or homosexuality, these sources of media served as a major influence on the assumptions and
attitudes that people expressed toward the subject (Fisher, 2007). Since Ellen became the first television show to have a gay leading character, other
programs such as Spin City, ER, Dawson's Creek, Queer as Folk, and Oz were/are all big hits and, equally, they all dealt with homosexuals
/homosexuality (Fisher, 2007). In addition to consistent media depiction, movie stars, A–list celebrities, music artists, and even Hollywood's "it–girls"
have also helped to shape the mode of comfort with homosexuality through their real–life experiences. Lindsay Lohan (bi–sexual), Angelina Jolie

Immoral. Punishable. Vile. These are a few of the words used to describe societal views of a marital union between two individuals of the same gender.
For centuries, humanity has viewed homosexuality as an unnatural, dangerous and sinning behaviour for numerous reasons including the perceived
harm on public, the impact on happiness and the ill intentions behind same–sex marriage. But does society have valid proof to support this supposedly
wrong behaviour or are we labelling homosexuality immoral without building a proper premise? Should a man be punished for wanting to marry and
raise a family with another man? Is it sinful for a woman to follow her natural instinct of falling in love with another woman? This essay divulges into

Numerous arguments have been presented against homosexuality, stating it is unnatural, degrades morals and is negatively influencing children. The
cause for homosexuality has changed from environmental reasoning to a genetic predisposition. So, if our sexuality is not a learned behaviour but is
natural, it is neither in our control to choose our sexuality nor influence others to do so. In recent years, the trend towards accepting gay marriage and
families has also seen a trend of declining marriage rates, with many signifying a breakdown of morals due to an increase in gay marriage. But are
morals still symbolizing what they used to be centuries ago or is the shift in norms applicable to a shift in morals? Lastly, people fear that liberating gay
rights will impact children by enticing homosexuality, but studies show that accepting homosexuality allows stability, acceptance and understanding
amongst societies members, allowing better education and opportunities for children from same–sex families. Therefore, are we unconsciously
attributing unrelated reasons to degrade homosexual marriages and families that seemingly pose as unethical and immoral acts when really no threat

Emergence Of Homosexual Identities In Early Modern Europe
Rebelling Against Nature:
Same Sex Relations, Sodomy, and The Emergence of Homosexual Identities in Early Modern Europe.
Although during the early modern period the term "homosexuality" may not have existed, the persecution of homosexuals was a vicious practice which
was sweeping across society in Early Modern Europe. Without a name, homosexuality and homosexual identities were heavily diluted down to simple
definitions which would set the standard for how homosexual identities developed and how homosexual individuals were treated for many years to
come. This essay will discuss the criminalization of sodomy and the demonization of homosexual individuals in Early Modern European society. It will

conflicts the community faced in the past and continues to face in the present. And the various sociological concepts that links as to why homosexuality
is seen by society as deviance , such as the Functionalist perspective and Socialization. According to the American Psychological Association, the
current scientific understanding is that individuals are usually aware of their sexual orientation between middle childhood and early adolescence (2008).

The roles were functional because women were limited by the physical restraints of pregnancy and unable to leave home for a long time. Once the roles
were established it was passed long through generations since it kept the family system functioning properly. During the war many women took the
mens job seeing as the men were away in war. When the men returned from war and wanted to reclaim their jobs, society fell into imbalance because
women did not want to relinquish their positions and also because the women were able to the mens job as well as they did. When it comes to sexuality
functionalist stress the importance of regulating sexual behavior that ensure marital cohesion and family stability. Functionalist sees the family unit as
the most important component in society and they promote family preservation. From Functionalist point of view homosexuality cannot be promoted
as acceptable substitute for heterosexuality. If homosexuality where to be promoted it would block procreation. So, if homosexuality were to occur
primarily it would cause dysfunction to society. The problem of sexuality emerged in the 19th century as biological, social, psychological and moral
concern. Homosexual was first defined as a kind person and later changed. With the change of definition of homosexuality led to social anxieties from

Homosexuality: Text Analysis
In both of the texts, they cover the topic of homosexuality, but in very different ways. In text A, the idea of lesbianism is described by Evelyn as an
'abnormality', suggesting that being a lesbian is frowned upon, and considered strange. Evelyn also uses a euphemism to describe lesbianism, showing
that the topic of being gay is a very taboo subject that most people don't want to hear about, suggesting again that lesbianism is considered bad in this
time. Because homosexuality is described as a negative thing, we can understand that this text was most likely written a while ago, as societies attitudes
towards homosexuality has changed in recent years, and is now viewed as a positive thing. However, in text B, there is also mentions of lesbianism,
but in a more direct way, as a dysphemism. The questioner states in the question that she thought that she 'was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

They both have a 'problem/solution' discourse structure, meaning that a problem is given to the reader, and is immediately followed by solution. For
example, both texts, there is a problem regarding rape. This is presented by having the query, and then the authors, Evelyn and Virginia, provide the
questioner with advice, the solution. Because this discourse structure is used in both of these texts, when can infer that many problem page articles use
this discourse structure, as it is successful. We know it is successful, as both articles use the problem/solution discourse structure, and both of these
texts are from successful magazines. Because they both use the same discourse structure, we begin to see other similarities in the structure of the texts.
They both use visual cohesion as a way of distinguishing between the problem and the solution. It also helps to break up the text, so it doesn't look
like a long, continuous article. This language use is, again, successful, as it is used in these successful

The Ass, The Witch, And The Roman Empire
The Ass, the Witch, and the Roman Empire: Roman Society in The Golden Ass Apuleius' The Golden Ass is the oldest Latin novel from around the
era of the Roman Empire to survive in its entirety. Because of this fact, it means that this novel is a source of great insight into a first hand account,
albeit with fictional prose, of Roman society through the eyes of a well–endowed male, Lucius, the narrator of the novel. Through his travels and his
various encounters along the way, both as a man and an ass (not mutually exclusive) we get to experience the many aspects of Roman society and
culture. Through the novel, we get to experience their societal attitudes concerning gender, sexuality, and violence. Although,The Golden Ass is written
as a fictional prose, for example – there's no historical evidence of bestial transformations in the Roman Empire, the base of the storytelling in which
Apuleius writes from can be seen as a semi–realistic representation and accounts of Roman society at its peak and give us insight into their views on
sexuality and gender.
In Roman society males dominated and had almost complete control over the entirety of their families. Everyone's life was on a string and the
patriarch of the household held the scissors that could easily cut that string. Almost from the start of the novel we get painted an accurate portrayal of
this clear cut gender division and misogyny evident in Roman society. Lucius enters a relationship with Photis, a slave girl he

Throughout many countries around the world, homosexuality has always been subjected as a controversial matter. The societal attitudes towards the
behavior of homosexuality vary substantially across Asia. Surprisingly, there are two conflicting attitudes toward homosexuality. Some Asian countries
strongly condemn against homosexuality. Whereas, in some Asian countries visibly accept homosexuality. Judith Butler explained that gender is
represented as a stylized repetition of acts or imitation. She described the categories of sexuality and gender as a form of performativity (Butler 1996,
368). This essay will explore and examine the experience of gender identity via the exploration of case studies in two distinct socio–cultural contexts. ...

Homosexuality in ancient China was extensively well–recognized and moderately tolerated, although it was not solely accepted (Wu 2003, 118).
Before the thirteenth century, the early ancient Chinese possess an open–minded view towards human sexuality (Wu 2003, 118). There was no form of
an equivalent abstract idea to one's identity as being "gay" or "lesbian" (Wu 2003, 118). According to a Hong Kong sociologist Chou Wah Shan, the
adjective "homosexual" was never a noun in ancient China (Drescher and Vittorio 2003, 118–119). This is because ancient China's mainstream belief
system did not have views on homosexuality. Homosexuality in traditional China was not reported as an identity nor a particular gender difference.
In fact, it is known as a formation of behavior or act (Dubel, Ireen and Andre 2010, 173). This structural interpretation is similar to Judith Butler's
argument in which gender identity is a performative of acts, behaviors, and gestures. Moreover, homosexuality was very popular in the midst of man
dynasties among the Chinese emperors. During the history of the West Han Dynasty, ten out of the eleven Chinese emperors had at least one
homosexual lover or had expressed some form of homosexual proclivities (Wu 2003, 120). In ancient China, those who were considered homosexual
or had any sexual activity with the same sex were not perceived with deviant personalities. Instead, it was considered as simply sharing the passion

The Theory Of Free Will
Belief in free will is a concept practiced throughout history amongst many societies worldwide (Sarkissian et al., 2010 as cited in Baumeister &
Monroe, 2014). Nahmias, Morris, Nadelhoffer and Turner (2005) define free will as the ability to control your actions independent of fate or external
factors. Recently, many studies have been performed investigating how levels of free will beliefs shape how we act, think and view the world.
Over the past thirty years, there has been a general increase in support for homosexuals (Loftus, 2001; Treas, 2002 as cited in Lewis, 2009), as well as
a rise in recognition of same sex relationships exemplified through President Barack Obama's legalization of same sex marriage across the US in 2015
(Brewer & ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Shariff et al's (2013) findings Baumeister and Monroe (2014) postulates that believing in free will is supposed to progress society and
judgement of others occurs when they do not conform to the society's norms (being heterosexual). Believing in free will and that we have control over
our actions arises from the need to regulate what we do and don't do; and to pass moral judgement when others stray from societal norms (Baumeister
& Monroe, 2014).
Carey and Paulhus (2011) found that high free will belief individuals possess a traditional conservative moral set of principles and are inflexible in
allowing them or others behavioural leeway. Furthermore, when compared to low free will believers, these individuals believed homosexuals
contained less moral standards (Brewer, 2013).
Another interesting find highlighted by Baumeister and Monroe, (2014) from the Crescioni et al (2013) study was that religious people had greater
belief in free will (also supported by Carey & Paulhus, 2011) and that the decisions/actions they make are based upon their personal, religious values.
Throughout history Western communities have functioned on the basis of Christian doctrine and used "free will as means to provide a justification for
God punishing sinful behaviour" (Baumeister & Monroe, 2014). That being said, it is implied that homosexuality is a sin which goes against the gender
and marriage foundations preached within many

The Pros And Cons Of Sin In Christianity
Sin is a religious interpretation of the morals of society, claiming immoral things to be a violation of a higher law; in Christianity's case, God's Law.
All religions, since they were first created, have in some way, discussed sin. Sin is a method of creating the moods and motivations for acting justly
in society. People are encouraged to refrain from doing something because it is a sin. Sin is thought to be universally understood and believed by all
followers of a religion. However, there is debate over whether sin is truly universal. Sin in Christianity is widely interpreted with many different views
on what is sinful. Within Christianity, acts deemed as sinful vary depending on denominations, societal standards, and the situation in which it happens.
Across Christianity there is variation about what is considered sinful. Different denominations interpret and teach the Bible in different ways. One
example is homosexuality. Some Christian denominations consider homosexuality to be a sin while others do not. The Primitive Baptist denomination,
which includes the Westboro Baptist Church, is intensely conservative when it comes to viewing homosexuality as a sin . The Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America is one of the more welcoming Christian denominations to the LGBTQ community, who celebrate same sex marriages, so therefore
do not view homosexuality as a sin . There are many other denominations who fall between declaring homosexuality as sinful and not. Calvin College,

Negative Reinforcement Of Gender Roles In Children
When parents direct children away from toys that are associated with the opposite gender, they reinforce the skewed perceptions and attitudes of the
expected social norm. Children tend to assimilate parents and caregivers' messages concerning gender roles, therefore, by directing children towards
gender specific toys, the parents define the roles of societal gender expectations, thus contributing to the negative reinforcement of the ideas of gender
identity. In some instances this could be considered damaging as the social learning theory claims; learning is a cognitive process that occurs through
observation or direct instruction. When desired behavior is rewarded, the child then learns the relationship between their behavior and the
consequence. Although this reinforces gender roles and conditions gender specific behavior, it also gets in the way of expression by encouraging
change (in behavior) for the sake of others, or in general society. Children carry this message with them into their teenage years. Gender divides are

Through Amanda's inability to separate the real from the fantasy, William's proves that Amanda's main coping mechanism is to retreat from reality.
Amanda's role as the forgotten southern belle also impacts her relationship with her daughter Laura, who suffers from crippling social anxiety and an
inferiority complex as a result of her disability. Aside from the internal and external conflicts which impact Amanda, Williams's strongly expresses his
indictment through his very own character, Tom. Tom is merely a victim of both societal conflicts and his own guilt caused by his decision to seek
fulfillment within his own life, rather than surrender to the unsatisfying life which his mother had created for him. One of the greatest factors in Tom's
lifestyle that creates his desire to escape this sense of imprisonment, is society's overall attitude toward homosexuality, specifically within his mother.
Amanda stated, "I took that horrible novel back to the library– yes! That hideous book by that insane Mr. Lawrence. I cannot control the output of
diseased minds or people who cater to them– but I won't let such filth brought into my house" (Williams 759). Because 1930's society does not allow
homosexuality to be expressed openly, literature is the closest way which allows him to express himself. The simple fact that his novels are the one

Research Paper On Oscar Wilde
The Victorian era emerged as a narrowly conventional society that strived to continue the excellence of idealistic morals and conventions that both
assisted in the formation of the time period and that remained constant throughout the sixty–plus years in English history. Notable figures of the 19th
century influenced how society functioned and often challenged the norm. Among these figures, Irish playwright Oscar Wilde poised his actions and
writings to contest and satirise the societal customs that were existent during the era. Throughout Wilde's workings, he both explicitly and implicitly

The prevalence of this discrimination was evident all throughout Victorian society and allowed Oscar Wilde [among others] to satirise the social
conditions of the era. Born into the upper class, Wilde's belonging to this faction would overwhelmingly establish the basis on which he found his
targets for satire (Graham n.d.) Within Wilde's play, AWoman of No Importance, he satirically alludes to the treatment of women throughout the
upper, middle, working, and under classes of Victorian society. "But good women have such limited views of life, their horizon so small, their
interests so petty, aren't they?" (A Woman of No Importance, Wilde, 1893.) Although colloquially perceived as an insult to women, Wilde
characterises how the society in which he resided in deemed females to be only eligible to stay within the household, redeeming the desires of their
husband and family. These social conditions were the foundation of the separate gender spheres where men were seen to be the precipice of the social
hierarchy and being affluent in the public eye, whilst females kept their responsibilities

Is Homosexuality A Personal Choice Or Is It Genetics?
Homosexuality has been an ongoing controversial topic for decades and remains a taboo subject for many. The controversy stems from two distinct,
main groups: liberals and conservatives. Both groups on opposite sides of the spectrum have created an uproar on what is right and what is wrong in
regards to homosexuality. Social, religious, and personal beliefs have shaped many opinions and views on the perspective of homosexuality, thus
creating opposing spheres without the consideration of scientific evidence. In the turn of the century, LGBTQ+ rights have expanded across the
country and many who identify under the umbrella of homosexuality have gained basic civil rights and support amongst many communities, however,
there still remains a curious and influential question at large: Is homosexuality a personal choice or is it genetics? Molding this issue around the
approach of three distinct disciplines: sociology, biology, and cultural and ethnic studies, will help explain the phenomenon that homosexuality is by
something that is developed through the influences of multiple variables.
Social Sciences: Sociology
Society greatly influences and shapes the opinions on homosexuality and its etiology. According to a study focusing on the empirical test of attribution
theory, people are determined to predict and control their environments where observed behaviors are attributed to either the individual or the
environment. Applying the attribution theory to sexuality, people who

The Banning Of Movies On Lgbt, Religion, Laws, And History

But I'm a Cheerleader, Rent, Brokeback Mountain, and Bruno. Besides movies, anything and everything else on the media have been closely monitored
by the authorities. Authorities in certain countries, especially Middle Eastern countries, have even gone to the lengths of labelling homosexuality as

Furthermore, the word "homosexual" is a socially constructed word. According to Creech, sexuality was only explored towards the end of the 19th
century through psychoanalysts as they believed that sexuality helps understand human personality better. All in all, The Bible encourages "a loving,
mutual, caring, committed relationship". Understanding this, churches are beginning to grow more accepting towards the LGBTQ community (Murphy).
Indic religions, or Dharmic religions, such as Hinduism and Buddhism, do not express strong opinions on homosexuality. In fact, a third gender is
mentioned in an ancient Hindu legal text called Manu Smriti. This excerpt explains the third gender as such:
A male child is produced by a greater quantity of male seed, a female child by the prevalence of the female; if both are equal, a third–sex child or boy
and girl twins are produced; if either are weak or deficient in quantity, a failure of conception results (3.49).
The third gender is also defined as not procreative according to The Vedas, a Hindu scripture. However, it is viewed negatively as the third gender is
usually affiliated with low class as described in ancient text (Gyatso). Interestingly, members of the third sex are not frowned upon even though some
ancient Hindu law books describe non–vaginal sex as impure. Kama Sutra, a Hindu text that describes the pleasure of

The Relationship Between Religious Institutions And Society
In 2013, Pope Francis delivered an apostolic exhortation on family life, "Amoris Laetitia," better known as "The Joy of Love." Establishing a sense of
resolution within the Catholic Church about homosexuality has also reopened the original debate on the propriety of a coexisting homosexual
Christian. This has been a concern in not only the Catholic Church, but sub–religions within the entire Christian community. It is interesting to
comprehend the relationship between religious organizations and society–mainly how one influences the other in doctrines, values, and beliefs,
specifically in regards to homosexuality. Regarding the relationship between Christian religious institutions, society, and homosexuality, the articles

Hilliard discussed when, in London in the 1880s, a subculture of homosexuality began to take its own collective form and that this subculture felt
"freed from the respectability and the puritanism of the churches." This is due to the fact that Anglo–Catholicism had looser sets of religious practices,
and because of this it actually increased the amount of 'social rebels' within the churches. These two pieces of 'evidence,' however, are not entirely
concrete because it is anecdotal; however, they strongly imply that the Catholic churches are outwardly against homosexuality but have a scandalous
reputation of being homosexually inclusive. They also strongly imply that the authoritarian nature behind a religious institution may also have an
influence on society's attendance of churches and what they feel comfortable practicing. While the other articles have given a brief background of
homosexuality within the church, Altemeyer used actual studies that can help explain the actual prejudice within the Catholic Church against
homosexuals. His goal was to find how one's religious ethnocentrism affected how they viewed homosexuality. He used a religious ethnocentrism scale,

This article addresses the way people view homosexuality. It mentions how society has had to "add on" identities in order to satisfy the different labels
that have been added to acknowledge the unique features of those within the realm of homosexuality. It expresses the many different ways people
define homosexuality before stating the author's stance on the issue. The author goes more in depth when she mentions the Civil Rights movement and

The article mentions how some people that discriminate on homosexuality are mostly loving the sinner but hating the sin. The author gives both points
of view on how people on opposing sides may view this controversial issue. He mentions examples from the Bible and interprets it in different ways
stating that people generally interpret the Bible based on the beliefs that they already have. His stance seems to be that God created all people
therefore; people should recognize the God given legitimacy of the homosexual orientation. He compares homosexuality to alcoholism, mentioning that

Gender, Discrimination, Harassment, And Discrimination
Introduction
Homosexuality is defined as forming sexual relationships with members of the same sex (Blonna et al 2010), and for decades now, the societal attitudes
towards homosexuality have varied, from casual integration through acceptance and then to repressing it through law enforcement and judicial
mechanisms (Gregory 2004).. In recent years the concept of homosexuality has become a controversial topic amongst the sports community. Since the
1920's Homosexual athletes have competed as Olympians and in various other professional sports. Due to the various stigmas associated with Gays
and Lesbians, coming out in the sports world has shown to be an alienating and difficult experience for homosexual athletes and coaches. In most ...

The consequences of men having more power than women, in the sports world, has led to stereotyped gender roles and stereotypes related to gay and
lesbian athletes. Gays are considered to be failures of the heterosexual image of man and therefore being gay is considered weak and is not tolerated
amongst athletes. On the other hand the being a lesbian or "tomboy" is more socially acceptable amongst sports culture (Joseph 1995). A few examples
of female athletes who have publicly stated their sexual orientation are, tennis legend Marina Navratilova, who competed in 2004, years after coming
out, and Megan Rapinoe, an American soccer player, took part in the 2012 Olympic games (Zeigler, 2014). Karen Hultzer publicly came out during
the London Games; she was one of twenty–three Olympians who were publicly competing (Zeigler2014). Almost ass Olympic athletes, who publicly
came out as women, have competed in events after their announcements. Even though male Olympic athletes like, figure skater Blake Skjellerup, had
announced he was gay he did not compete in the winter Olympics afterwards (Zeigler, 2014). The main ideology associated in the masculine dominant
environment is that homosexuality is a weakness, even though this is not true, Professional male

Same Love Transition
Individuals undergoing transition often tend to challenge their own and society's attitude, beliefs and perception. As such, they can often understand or
enhance their significance of societal contexts allowing them to vocalize disposition and maturity, thus affecting the individual's current ideological
positioning. 'Same Love,' a 2013 song by artists Macklemore, Ryan Lewis and Mary Lambert express a distinctive form of transition by addressing
homosexuality within the audio – visual (music video) highlighting the ongoing battle of legalizing same–sex marriage. The music video details the
experiences of a homosexual male through a momentous time–lapse thus, confronting responders with social acceptance (formulation of modern

anecdote before Macklemore quickly delves into the rather composite topic. The pun expands upon the listener's understanding of how children are

The Glass Menagerie Mental Illness Essay
Issue #1: Stigma of Mental Illness Both Williams and Gaita employs the stigma against mental illness as a significant issue within both literary texts.
Mental illness of the two prominent female characters within separate texts, namely Christine from Romulus my Father, and Laura from The Glass
Menagerie is a prominent element in the story as it shapes the interpretation of the audience. The employment of these characters allow the author to
shed light to values and attitudes of which the society holds against mental illness, irrespective of the time period. In The Glass Menagerie, Laura's
character serves as the victimised manifestation of mental illness. The unfortunate character of Laura Wingfield suffered from anxiety and a 'limp on
the leg'. Her anxiety is made extremely evident in Scene 2, whereby Amanda confronted Laura about her absence at Rubicam's Business College:
Amanda: Laura, where have you been going when you've gone out pretending that you were going to business college? Laura: It was lesser of the two
evils, Mother. I couldn't go back there. I–threw up–on the floor! (Scene 2, pg. 13) Laura's absence from the college signifies her inability to cope
around places with people, resulting her to spend the day in the 'the park... zoo... and art museum'. Her introverted attitudes inhibit her ability to socialise

Pelo Malo Taboos
Through a variety of cultures and generations, many people struggle with beauty, body image, and pressures of society about beauty standards and
gender. It begins with a comparison to models like Miss Universe (like Miss Venezuela in the film), models at beauty pageants, bullying,
discrimination, and etcetera. Pelo Malo (RondГіn 2013) is a foreign drama film, that uniquely illustrates the many taboos in Latin culture through the
narrative of a little boy, Junior. Mariana RondГіn creates this story to illustrate the issues about beauty, masculinity, and the desire of self–expression.

In Pelo Malo, a prime example is about Junior's desire to be identified as a musician for his school picture; however, he began this obsession about
straightening his hair. There were many topics of the ideas of beauty being this popular ideal that "'everyone [in Venezuela] wants to have straight
hair'" ("A Rare Look Into Latin American Race Relations"). In context, the term 'pelo malo' refers to 'bad hair' about curly, unruly hair. This brings a
taboo topic into identity politics that RondГіn mentions, "'The origin of ['pelo malo'] is very offensive. It's very racist.'" ("A Rare Look Into Latin
American Race Relations"). Many Venezuelans are descendants of European and indigenous, African ancestors, which can be demonstrated from most
citizens having thick, tightly curled hair. Peter Wade claims, mentioning of a sociologist who studies racial and political issues in Spanish–speaking
societies, there's an "overwhelming consensus...that African hair is 'bad' can only be an expression of racism and its internalization". He furthers
mentions about hair treatments like straightening hair has become quite popular for many citizens who have curly hair. In Pelo Malo, for example,
Junior is seen watching a video of an Afro–Latina woman talking about putting mayonnaise on the hair to straighten it, who was later caught and
gotten in trouble by his mother. Moreover, Mariana RondГіn further mentions that hair straightening is "the second most successful business in
Venezuela", she talks about how there are products like hair Botox and all other types trying to straighten hair (Farrell). This pushes the behavior of
exclusion towards individuals with African ancestry that it becomes "notoriously a site for the enactment of race and gender hierarchy" – meaning, that
the ideology about relaxed hair is a guarantee for more success

Homosexuality and Religion
Opposition to gay marriage has increased since the summer and a narrow majority of Americans also oppose allowing gays and lesbians to enter legal
agreements that fall short of marriage. Moreover, despite the overall rise in tolerance toward gays since the 1980s, many Americans remain highly
critical of homosexuals В and religious belief is a major factor in these attitudes.
A 55% majority believes it is a sin to engage in homosexual behavior, and that view is much more prevalent among those who have a high level of
religious commitment (76%). About half of all Americans have an unfavorable opinion of gay men (50%) and lesbians (48%), but highly religious

(53%) strongly oppose the idea. But voters who prefer to see a Democrat elected in 2004 are divided В 46% favor gay marriage, 48% oppose. A
substantial minority of these Democratic–leaning voters strongly oppose gay marriage (25%).
The survey also shows that Americans remain deeply divided over the essential cause and nature of homosexuality. A 42% plurality believes that being
a homosexual "is just the way that some people prefer to live," no change from a Los Angeles Times survey conducted in 1985. But there has been a
rise in the percentage who say homosexuality is "something that people are born with" В from 20% in the Times survey to 30% currently. The public
also is split on the question of whether a gay person 's sexual orientation can be changed В 42% say it can, the same number disagrees.
Still, most Americans say they are comfortable interacting socially with homosexuals. Just one–in–five say they are uncomfortable around

Homosexuality : Quest For A Utopian World Essay
INTRODUCTION
The proposed research work will be entitled "Homosexuality: Quest for a Utopian World". The genre of the proposed work will deal in detail with
the prevailing issue of homosexuality (both gay and lesbian) and try to justify their quest for a world where they can live without their integrity being
questioned. The research will cover the history of homosexuality; how it has been seen through ages and the present scenario.
Setting the background in comparative studies the proposed research work aims at providing a clear picture of the societal attitudes towards same
sex–relationships and how it is varied over time and space. The work will also look into the psychological aspects of the homosexuals and how a
woman looks for a secure relationship in another woman and what has brought about such notions.
Etymologically, the word homosexual is a hybrid of Greek and Latin words, thus connoting acts of sexual behavior between members of the same
sex. The word 'homosexual' is controversial in itself as it refers to only one's sexual behavior as opposed to the romantic feelings and thus, people
attribute the term 'gay' and 'lesbian' as appropriate. Homophilia, also means the love and sensibilities between the same sex people.
Edward Morgan Forster, a renowned English novelist and essayist was a homosexual as known by his close friends but the public was unaware of this
fact and thus, remained a bachelor throughout his life. He had five novels published in his lifetime

Inner Turmoil In Giovanni's Room By James Baldwin
David's Inner Turmoil in Giovanni's Room
When James Baldwin first presented the novel Giovanni's Room to his agent Helen Strauss, she told him to burn it – she feared the novel's open
homosexual relationship would be unappealing to Baldwin's audience and harm the book's success. This negative attitude towards the LGBT+
community made it all the more important for Baldwin to publish his novel, which was unexpectedly praised for "its prose and its honesty" (Polchin).
Influenced early on by society's stereotypical views on men and sexuality, David, the main character of Giovanni's Room, develops a mindset of
homosexuality as wrong and impure, despite being a gay man himself. He tries to reject his sexuality most palpably through a relationship ... Show

When contemplating their relationship, David laments, "I told her that I loved her . . . and I made myself believe it. But I wonder if I had. I was
thinking . . . of our nights in bed, of the peculiar innocence . . . which had made [them] . . . so unrelated . . . to my life" (5). Here, David
acknowledges his conscious efforts to convince himself that he loves Hella, implying that true love, on some level, must be intuitive and natural.
He begins to realize that the love he feels for her is not real; he only enjoys the socially acceptable relationship that she offers. Their partnership
requires no deeper emotion than pure sexual desire, which is the kind of detached relationship he craves. Similarly, after meeting Giovanni, David
hopes "to burn out, through Hella, [his] image of Giovanni and the reality of his touch" (122), yet when walking down Raspail, a street David has
walked with both of them, "the face that [glows] insistently before [him is] not her face but [Giovanni's]" (94). Hella provides a distraction for David
from his feelings for Giovanni, but David knows – subconsciously – that he loves Giovanni much more genuinely and intimately. In referencing 'the
reality of his touch,' David acquiesces the authenticity of his love for Giovanni, so different from the shallow relationship he has

Biological Arguments Against Abortion
Although debates concerning abortion policies often center on discerning when life begins, equating abortion with the taking of a human life, there is
evidence to suggest that individuals' views on abortion are not solely shaped by their views of when life begins. Rather, a review of the literature
suggests that abortion views are strongly linked to views on sexuality–including views on who should have sex and when, the purpose of sex, and who
is responsible for sex and post–sex outcomes. By conceptualizing abortion attitudes in the frameworks of homosexuality, premarital sex, procreative
sex, religious beliefs, and rape myths, one can argue that complex societal factors may drive abortion views, or at least supplement biological
arguments against abortion. As early as the 1980s, empirical studies found a correlation between views against homosexuality and views against
abortion (Finlay, 1981; Fried, 1988). Based on a questionnaire distributed to participants,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sexual intercourse between two individuals is a dyadic encounter that results from negotiation, coercion, or violence, but it can be unclear who is
responsible for sex occurring. In mammalian models, it tends to be the female who controls whether or not sex happens, as the female often must
present herself in order for the male to copulate her (Beach, 1976). For example, female rodents exhibit a behavior called lordosis, characterized
arching of the back, which allows for the male to copulate; a male rodent may still try to mount the female in the absence of lordosis, but cannot
copulate (Hull & Dominguez, 2007). While rodent models are not directly applicable to humans, as human females do not exhibit lordosis, the framing
of females as the gatekeepers of sex could influence the way that humans view their own specie's

The Effects Of Prenatal Hormones On The Developing Fetus
Why some people are attracted to members of their own sex whereas others are attracted to members of the opposite sex is no known cause or reason.
There is belief to it possible contributing from genetics, hormonal and the environmental influences. One study stated that there is a 50 percent chance
that if one identical twin is homosexual or bisexual, the other twin is too. Similar findings lead that some researchers estimate that sexual orientation is
30 to 70 percent genetic (Mustanski, Chivers, & Bailey, 2002). Another research suggests that sexual orientation is impacted by a gene or genes found
on the X chromosome. Though genetic tendencies for homosexuality may be passed from mothers to their children (Rahman & Wilson, 2003). During
human evolution, homosexuality was developed to minimize competition between males for a limited number of potential female mates (Schulling,
2004). A different possibility is that prenatal hormone levels influence the developing fetus (Levay, 2011). According to the prenatal hormonal theory
of homosexuality, some male fetuses are exposed to too little testosterone. Similarly, some female fetuses are exposed to too much testosterone. These
differences, in turn, can impact sexual orientation (Mustanski, Chivers, & Bailey, 2002). Regardless, homosexuality is not caused by hormone
imbalances in adulthood; the hormone levels of most gay men and lesbians are within the normal range (Banks & Gartrell, 1995). Hormonal imbalances

reasons that led Toland into this relationship, and the sociological factors that led him away from this relationship are equally as alluring. The cause of
this relationship is the offspring of the values instilled into Toland both by hisfamily and the cultural norms of the time. These norms consisted
primarily of the idea of the nuclear family, the pervasive mindset of the time period. These contingencies were also paired with the burden of living up

Fr. Osterreicher argues in his essay "Nostra Aetate" that all people, despite many different backgrounds are all the same, "All men form but one
community. 1 This is because all stem from one stock which God created to the people the entire earth (cf. Acts 17:26)" (Osterreicher 2). This is not
mainly a religious issue but a personal issue that affects us all and for that a call to tolerance means understanding one individual and his/her life.
Another way that such a just world is possible is if one refuses to be ignorant and believes in stereotypes.
As human beings, we are called to love one another and respect another as well as opinions and lifestyle and yet it is often difficult to do such a
thing. There are many reasons why it is difficult to accept a person because of who they are. The most common reason is as said before, one is taught
the various prejudices about a group. This happens for many reasons. Often times the ignorance is bliss mantra wins out in philosophy and becomes the
normal thought. One is ignorant because one is afraid to challenge the status quo due to retribution. The community is however not the only ones at
fault. Usually it also the stereotypes told by outside sources that cause such fear and lack of knowledge. Such is the case for homosexuals in America

Homosexuality Essay
Homosexuality
No one knows exactly how homosexuality entered into human history. I would imagine that the practices associated with the erotic attraction of people
to one's own gender have been around since the dawn of humanity. The earliest accounts of homosexual behavior seem to be found in ancient pagan
religious practices. At least, the pagans included homosexuality in the worship of various gods. Whether the inclusion in worship was because the
practice was already a part of the society–at–large or if the pagan worship introduced the practice is impossible to determine, although some
understandings of Paul's writings argue for the latter.
Human beings began to worship many gods very early in human history. These early gods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Male gods could plant seeds and were therefore seen as more productive than the female gods to some. When a man ejaculated his semen into another
man's anus at the shrine, he was depositing more male power to the gods. With the additional strength of the semen of many men, the god could then
insure a bountiful crop, a larger herd, and many children to care for the field. This practice grew into, not only forms of pagan worship, but also a
means of supplying money for the temple. Catamites, boys and men who were exclusively used for passive anal sex, began to serve the temples. One
must wonder whether boys were sometimes forced into this kind of sexual contact due to economic circumstances, much like their female counterparts.
Women often survived only by prostitution since they were allowed no inheritance. Orphan boys may often have found themselves in the same
predicament.
Regardless, it was very early in human history that both male and female prostitutes were used in temple worship in order to raise funds for the temple,
as well as support themselves.

Judith Butler Religion
A traditional view of homosexuality is that it is perceived as wrong. It is to be avoided, to be 'othered', and is subject to social abjection . In Judith
Butler's Gender Trouble, she identifies a need for a new interpretation of gender against the previous regime of 'gender hierarchy and compulsory
heterosexuality.' In this essay, I will argue that Judith Butler's approach togender politics is an improvement on previous attitudes towards homophobia.
I will do this through a close contextual reading of Butler's work, particularly Gender Trouble and her article Imitation and Gender Insubordination.
Butler calls for a more fluid, variable interpretation of gender that would strive for a new equality where subjects are not restricted to notions of
masculinity or femininity . Butler herself argues that gender is performance and is false, and this act of doing is just a social construct. This then calls
into question what the alternatives can be, and this essay will argue these improvements on attitudes towards homosexuality requires a deconstruction of
attitudes towards gender.
It will argue this through, firstly, establishing that a patriarchal societal regime with a mind towards procreation has the expectation of conformity to
binary gender roles in place. From this, it can be drawn that sexual preference is inherently linked to gender construction, which needs to be challenged.
And then from these first two premises it guides us to question what the binaries of 'male' or

Analysis Of The Movie ' The Imitation Game ' By Alan Turing
What is socially appropriate? How or more so who decides what is appropriate? These questions have been asked, debated, and fought over since the
dawn of civilization. The rhetor of the movie The Imitation Game integrates these questions into the true story of Alan Turing and the people around
him. The rhetor allows these questions of appropriateness to be narrowed down to two very influential people in history to give these large,
foundational questions a more personal touch, and for the audience to see the very personal consequence of society's decision. Throughout the film the
question of the appropriateness of differing sexual orientations, gender roles, and social norms are questioned by allowing the audience to see how
these aspects have been judged in the past and the consequences of society's decisions on a personal level. The first societal decision the rhetor
questions is that of the appropriateness of gender roles. The main female character named Joan Clarke is the focus of the question of standard gender

Intersectionality And Morality

  • 1. Intersectionality And Morality Intersectionality is a relevant theory for some gay, lesbian or bisexual individuals. Intersectionality studies "the relationships among multiple dimensions and modalities of social relationships and subject formations" (McCall, 2005). The theory argues, pursues and considers how gender, race, sexual orientation and other categories of identity interact on many and often concurring levels of social relationships, therefore allowing discrimination and social inequity. Intersectionality explains how the notion of social injustice, such as racism, sexism, homophobia, and belief–based bigotry such as religion are not independent of one another; instead, they are interconnected, and thereby reflect "intersectionality" in regards to social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Every day in the United States, a young person, under the age of eighteen faces homelessness, and most often it's because of others. In a report by The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, it was noted that 26% of LGBTQ youth were kicked out of their homes when they came out (Ray, 2006). The Urban Justice League reports numbers as high as 78% of LGBTQ youth that "were removed from or left their foster care placements because they were un–welcoming or hostile towards their sexual orientation and/or gender identity " (Feinstein, Greenblatt, Hass, Kohn, & Rana, 2001). The United States is an independent, individualistic country; we prize the freedom of expression, but do we really? One of the most significant, if not the most important, social structures is the family. Gay, lesbian and bisexual individuals who are aware of their sexuality, must create an alternative self to present to family and friends, especially if there is an understanding, verbalized or implicit, that homosexuality is not tolerated, or simply wrong. Many gay, lesbian and bisexual men and women would rather go with the flow, assimilate, not make waves, rather than to express their own gay identity, and risk ostracism. When race is factored into the equation of homosexuality, it becomes more complicated. Taking a look at Black and Latino cultures over the past ten to twenty years, there was an emergence of ... • 2. The Controversy Of Homophobia During World War II Essay In the recent years there has been a growing concern about the impact of homophobia. In the United States, few endeavors were made to make backing bunches supporting gay and lesbian connections until after World War II, albeit prewar gay life prospered in urban focuses, for example, Greenwich Village and Harlem amid the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. The interruptions of World War II permitted earlier detached gay men and ladies to meet as fighters, war laborers, and different volunteers evacuated from residential communities and posted around the world. More noteworthy mindfulness, combined with Senator Joseph McCarthy 's examination of gay people holding government occupations amid the mid 1950s, prompted the primary American–based political requests for reasonable treatment in psychological wellbeing, open strategy, and vocation. Until the passing of the Sexual Offences Bill in 1967, male homosexual activity was illegal. Gay men were frequently imprisoned for consensual sex with another man. Lesbianism was not illegal, but was similarly subject to public disapproval, or ignored.

Despite the dangers and difficulties involved, gay men and women were able to find places to meet. The Minorities Research Group (MRG) was formed in 1964, and provided isolated lesbians with resources and information about female homosexuality and the opportunity to meet other women" (Allan Horsfall 2014). • 3. Cat On A Hot Tin Roof Analysis Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is written by Tennessee Williams, a gay American playwright from a hard life. Set in the 50s, the duration of the Cat play reviews the conflict between truth and illusion. Set in the 50s on a Mississippi plantation, Williams presents, Brick, an alcoholic ex–athlete who refuses to sleep with his vivacious wife, Maggie the "cat", supposedly out of guilt over the suicide of his old friend, Skipper: what Brick is unable to confront is his own, and Skipper's, latent homosexuality. Williams was known for putting his own life into his works and the question of Brick's inheritance and "click", goes along with Williams wanting to show the internal struggles of a man and his responsibility not only to his family but also to himself, and whether it is better to live by lies or truth, while showing a piece of his life. Cat is not structured in a traditional sense, unlike normal plays with divided up scenes, Cat is divided into just three acts. There is continuous action that mimics the chaotic actions of a family in distress, like most real life families they never stop fighting, playing, and being around each other. The play is characterized as a dramatic southern gothic work, although it can be argued as a mix of Gothic Southern Drama and Postmodernism. The Southern Gothic style seeks to explore social issues and reveal the cultural character of the American South. We can find some evidence of this in the postmodernist representation of the family and themes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Mass media appears to have played a major role in more widespread acceptance of homosexuality, however negative perceptions still exist. In order to probe the level of acceptance among college students and what shapes their perceptions of homosexuality, a study was conducted by surveying male and female students at Morehouse and Spelman colleges. The purpose of this study is to statistically determine if attitudes toward homosexuality have changed or shifted due to the media's consistent portrayal of it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This shift was huge during this time because while most people were growing up with or surrounded by heterosexuality, an acceptance of homosexuality was beginning to take hold. Programs such as Love Sidney, Dynasty, Heartbeat, Melrose Place, and Will and Grace portrayed homosexuality through leading and supporting characters and helped to shift the paradigm of attitudes toward gays, lesbians, and bisexuals (Fisher, 2007). The positive media portrayal of homosexuality has been shown to influence the beliefs and attitudes of heterosexuals because often, "the world, as seen in the media, is perceived by its viewers as an accurate reflection of reality" (Fisher, 2007). Since so many viewers at that time had little or no personal experience with homosexuals or homosexuality, these sources of media served as a major influence on the assumptions and attitudes that people expressed toward the subject (Fisher, 2007). Since Ellen became the first television show to have a gay leading character, other programs such as Spin City, ER, Dawson's Creek, Queer as Folk, and Oz were/are all big hits and, equally, they all dealt with homosexuals /homosexuality (Fisher, 2007). In addition to consistent media depiction, movie stars, A–list celebrities, music artists, and even Hollywood's "it–girls" have also helped to shape the mode of comfort with homosexuality through their real–life experiences. Lindsay Lohan (bi–sexual), Angelina Jolie (bi–sexual), Elton ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Pretty Little Liars Research Paper Immoral. Punishable. Vile. These are a few of the words used to describe societal views of a marital union between two individuals of the same gender. For centuries, humanity has viewed homosexuality as an unnatural, dangerous and sinning behaviour for numerous reasons including the perceived harm on public, the impact on happiness and the ill intentions behind same–sex marriage. But does society have valid proof to support this supposedly wrong behaviour or are we labelling homosexuality immoral without building a proper premise? Should a man be punished for wanting to marry and raise a family with another man? Is it sinful for a woman to follow her natural instinct of falling in love with another woman? This essay divulges into the overgeneralizations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Numerous arguments have been presented against homosexuality, stating it is unnatural, degrades morals and is negatively influencing children. The cause for homosexuality has changed from environmental reasoning to a genetic predisposition. So, if our sexuality is not a learned behaviour but is natural, it is neither in our control to choose our sexuality nor influence others to do so. In recent years, the trend towards accepting gay marriage and families has also seen a trend of declining marriage rates, with many signifying a breakdown of morals due to an increase in gay marriage. But are morals still symbolizing what they used to be centuries ago or is the shift in norms applicable to a shift in morals? Lastly, people fear that liberating gay rights will impact children by enticing homosexuality, but studies show that accepting homosexuality allows stability, acceptance and understanding amongst societies members, allowing better education and opportunities for children from same–sex families. Therefore, are we unconsciously attributing unrelated reasons to degrade homosexual marriages and families that seemingly pose as unethical and immoral acts when really no threat ... Although during the early modern period the term "homosexuality" may not have existed, the persecution of homosexuals was a vicious practice which was sweeping across society in Early Modern Europe. Without a name, homosexuality and homosexual identities were heavily diluted down to simple definitions which would set the standard for how homosexual identities developed and how homosexual individuals were treated for many years to come. However despite gay marriage becoming legal and the normalization of homosexuality, the LGBQT community continues to face scrutiny over their lifestyle. I will be talking about the various conflicts the community faced in the past and continues to face in the present. And the various sociological concepts that links as to why homosexuality is seen by society as deviance , such as the Functionalist perspective and Socialization. According to the American Psychological Association, the current scientific understanding is that individuals are usually aware of their sexual orientation between middle childhood and early adolescence (2008). ... Once the roles were established it was passed long through generations since it kept the family system functioning properly. During the war many women took the mens job seeing as the men were away in war. When the men returned from war and wanted to reclaim their jobs, society fell into imbalance because women did not want to relinquish their positions and also because the women were able to the mens job as well as they did. When it comes to sexuality functionalist stress the importance of regulating sexual behavior that ensure marital cohesion and family stability. Functionalist sees the family unit as the most important component in society and they promote family preservation. From Functionalist point of view homosexuality cannot be promoted as acceptable substitute for heterosexuality. If homosexuality where to be promoted it would block procreation. So, if homosexuality were to occur primarily it would cause dysfunction to society. The problem of sexuality emerged in the 19th century as biological, social, psychological and moral concern. • 8. Homosexuality: Text Analysis In both of the texts, they cover the topic of homosexuality, but in very different ways. In text A, the idea of lesbianism is described by Evelyn as an 'abnormality', suggesting that being a lesbian is frowned upon, and considered strange. Evelyn also uses a euphemism to describe lesbianism, showing that the topic of being gay is a very taboo subject that most people don't want to hear about, suggesting again that lesbianism is considered bad in this time. Because homosexuality is described as a negative thing, we can understand that this text was most likely written a while ago, as societies attitudes towards homosexuality has changed in recent years, and is now viewed as a positive thing. However, in text B, there is also mentions of lesbianism, but in a more direct way, as a dysphemism. The questioner states in the question that she thought that she 'was ... • 9. The Ass, The Witch, And The Roman Empire The Ass, the Witch, and the Roman Empire: Roman Society in The Golden Ass Apuleius' The Golden Ass is the oldest Latin novel from around the era of the Roman Empire to survive in its entirety. Because of this fact, it means that this novel is a source of great insight into a first hand account, albeit with fictional prose, of Roman society through the eyes of a well–endowed male, Lucius, the narrator of the novel. Through his travels and his various encounters along the way, both as a man and an ass (not mutually exclusive) we get to experience the many aspects of Roman society and culture. Through the novel, we get to experience their societal attitudes concerning gender, sexuality, and violence. Although,The Golden Ass is written as a fictional prose, for example – there's no historical evidence of bestial transformations in the Roman Empire, the base of the storytelling in which Apuleius writes from can be seen as a semi–realistic representation and accounts of Roman society at its peak and give us insight into their views on sexuality and gender. In Roman society males dominated and had almost complete control over the entirety of their families. Everyone's life was on a string and the patriarch of the household held the scissors that could easily cut that string. Almost from the start of the novel we get painted an accurate portrayal of this clear cut gender division and misogyny evident in Roman society. The societal attitudes towards the behavior of homosexuality vary substantially across Asia. Surprisingly, there are two conflicting attitudes toward homosexuality. Some Asian countries strongly condemn against homosexuality. Whereas, in some Asian countries visibly accept homosexuality. Judith Butler explained that gender is represented as a stylized repetition of acts or imitation. She described the categories of sexuality and gender as a form of performativity (Butler 1996, 368). Homosexuality in ancient China was extensively well–recognized and moderately tolerated, although it was not solely accepted (Wu 2003, 118). Before the thirteenth century, the early ancient Chinese possess an open–minded view towards human sexuality (Wu 2003, 118). There was no form of an equivalent abstract idea to one's identity as being "gay" or "lesbian" (Wu 2003, 118). According to a Hong Kong sociologist Chou Wah Shan, the adjective "homosexual" was never a noun in ancient China (Drescher and Vittorio 2003, 118–119). This is because ancient China's mainstream belief system did not have views on homosexuality. Homosexuality in traditional China was not reported as an identity nor a particular gender difference. In fact, it is known as a formation of behavior or act (Dubel, Ireen and Andre 2010, 173). This structural interpretation is similar to Judith Butler's argument in which gender identity is a performative of acts, behaviors, and gestures. Moreover, homosexuality was very popular in the midst of man dynasties among the Chinese emperors. During the history of the West Han Dynasty, ten out of the eleven Chinese emperors had at least one homosexual lover or had expressed some form of homosexual proclivities (Wu 2003, 120). In ancient China, those who were considered homosexual or had any sexual activity with the same sex were not perceived with deviant personalities. • 12. The Theory Of Free Will Belief in free will is a concept practiced throughout history amongst many societies worldwide (Sarkissian et al., 2010 as cited in Baumeister & Monroe, 2014). Nahmias, Morris, Nadelhoffer and Turner (2005) define free will as the ability to control your actions independent of fate or external factors. Recently, many studies have been performed investigating how levels of free will beliefs shape how we act, think and view the world. Over the past thirty years, there has been a general increase in support for homosexuals (Loftus, 2001; Treas, 2002 as cited in Lewis, 2009), as well as a rise in recognition of same sex relationships exemplified through President Barack Obama's legalization of same sex marriage across the US in 2015 (Brewer & ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Shariff et al's (2013) findings Baumeister and Monroe (2014) postulates that believing in free will is supposed to progress society and judgement of others occurs when they do not conform to the society's norms (being heterosexual). Believing in free will and that we have control over our actions arises from the need to regulate what we do and don't do; and to pass moral judgement when others stray from societal norms (Baumeister & Monroe, 2014). Carey and Paulhus (2011) found that high free will belief individuals possess a traditional conservative moral set of principles and are inflexible in allowing them or others behavioural leeway. Furthermore, when compared to low free will believers, these individuals believed homosexuals contained less moral standards (Brewer, 2013). Another interesting find highlighted by Baumeister and Monroe, (2014) from the Crescioni et al (2013) study was that religious people had greater belief in free will (also supported by Carey & Paulhus, 2011) and that the decisions/actions they make are based upon their personal, religious values. Throughout history Western communities have functioned on the basis of Christian doctrine and used "free will as means to provide a justification for God punishing sinful behaviour" (Baumeister & Monroe, 2014). • 13. The Pros And Cons Of Sin In Christianity Sin is a religious interpretation of the morals of society, claiming immoral things to be a violation of a higher law; in Christianity's case, God's Law. All religions, since they were first created, have in some way, discussed sin. Sin is a method of creating the moods and motivations for acting justly in society. People are encouraged to refrain from doing something because it is a sin. Sin is thought to be universally understood and believed by all followers of a religion. However, there is debate over whether sin is truly universal. Sin in Christianity is widely interpreted with many different views on what is sinful. Within Christianity, acts deemed as sinful vary depending on denominations, societal standards, and the situation in which it happens. Across Christianity there is variation about what is considered sinful. Different denominations interpret and teach the Bible in different ways. One example is homosexuality. Some Christian denominations consider homosexuality to be a sin while others do not. The Primitive Baptist denomination, which includes the Westboro Baptist Church, is intensely conservative when it comes to viewing homosexuality as a sin . The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is one of the more welcoming Christian denominations to the LGBTQ community, who celebrate same sex marriages, so therefore do not view homosexuality as a sin . There are many other denominations who fall between declaring homosexuality as sinful and not. Calvin College, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Negative Reinforcement Of Gender Roles In Children When parents direct children away from toys that are associated with the opposite gender, they reinforce the skewed perceptions and attitudes of the expected social norm. Children tend to assimilate parents and caregivers' messages concerning gender roles, therefore, by directing children towards gender specific toys, the parents define the roles of societal gender expectations, thus contributing to the negative reinforcement of the ideas of gender identity. In some instances this could be considered damaging as the social learning theory claims; learning is a cognitive process that occurs through observation or direct instruction. When desired behavior is rewarded, the child then learns the relationship between their behavior and the consequence. Although this reinforces gender roles and conditions gender specific behavior, it also gets in the way of expression by encouraging change (in behavior) for the sake of others, or in general society. Children carry this message with them into their teenage years. Gender divides are often developed through playtime and early socialization which later develops ... Set in St. Louis Missouri prior to World War II, Tennessee Williams reflects back on his deeply tragic and dysfunctional familial experiences in, "The Glass Menagerie". The real aspects of the play which had a significant impact on the lower middle–class families such as the Wingfields included, the economic hardships surrounding the Great Depression, the fall of the American south, society's intolerance towards homosexuality, and many threats abroad. Through Amanda's inability to separate the real from the fantasy, William's proves that Amanda's main coping mechanism is to retreat from reality. Amanda's role as the forgotten southern belle also impacts her relationship with her daughter Laura, who suffers from crippling social anxiety and an inferiority complex as a result of her disability. Aside from the internal and external conflicts which impact Amanda, Williams's strongly expresses his indictment through his very own character, Tom. Tom is merely a victim of both societal conflicts and his own guilt caused by his decision to seek fulfillment within his own life, rather than surrender to the unsatisfying life which his mother had created for him. One of the greatest factors in Tom's lifestyle that creates his desire to escape this sense of imprisonment, is society's overall attitude toward homosexuality, specifically within his mother. Amanda stated, "I took that horrible novel back to the library– yes! That hideous book by that insane Mr. Lawrence. I cannot control the output of diseased minds or people who cater to them– but I won't let such filth brought into my house" (Williams 759). Among these figures, Irish playwright Oscar Wilde poised his actions and writings to contest and satirise the societal customs that were existent during the era. Within Wilde's play, AWoman of No Importance, he satirically alludes to the treatment of women throughout the upper, middle, working, and under classes of Victorian society. "But good women have such limited views of life, their horizon so small, their interests so petty, aren't they?" (A Woman of No Importance, Wilde, 1893.) Although colloquially perceived as an insult to women, Wilde characterises how the society in which he resided in deemed females to be only eligible to stay within the household, redeeming the desires of their husband and family. The controversy stems from two distinct, main groups: liberals and conservatives. Both groups on opposite sides of the spectrum have created an uproar on what is right and what is wrong in regards to homosexuality. Social, religious, and personal beliefs have shaped many opinions and views on the perspective of homosexuality, thus creating opposing spheres without the consideration of scientific evidence. In the turn of the century, LGBTQ+ rights have expanded across the country and many who identify under the umbrella of homosexuality have gained basic civil rights and support amongst many communities, however, there still remains a curious and influential question at large: Is homosexuality a personal choice or is it genetics? By conceptualizing abortion attitudes in the frameworks of homosexuality, premarital sex, procreative sex, religious beliefs, and rape myths, one can argue that complex societal factors may drive abortion views, or at least supplement biological arguments against abortion. The Effects Of Prenatal Hormones On The Developing Fetus Why some people are attracted to members of their own sex whereas others are attracted to members of the opposite sex is no known cause or reason. There is belief to it possible contributing from genetics, hormonal and the environmental influences. One study stated that there is a 50 percent chance that if one identical twin is homosexual or bisexual, the other twin is too. Similar findings lead that some researchers estimate that sexual orientation is 30 to 70 percent genetic (Mustanski, Chivers, & Bailey, 2002). Another research suggests that sexual orientation is impacted by a gene or genes found on the X chromosome. Though genetic tendencies for homosexuality may be passed from mothers to their children (Rahman & Wilson, 2003). During human evolution, homosexuality was developed to minimize competition between males for a limited number of potential female mates (Schulling, 2004). A different possibility is that prenatal hormone levels influence the developing fetus (Levay, 2011). According to the prenatal hormonal theory of homosexuality, some male fetuses are exposed to too little testosterone. Similarly, some female fetuses are exposed to too much testosterone. These differences, in turn, can impact sexual orientation (Mustanski, Chivers, & Bailey, 2002). Analysis Of The Movie ' Stuck Rubber Baby ' Essay In the graphic novel Stuck Rubber Baby, the protagonist Toland Park deals with his own issues of sexual identity in the backdrop of the historical Kennedy years. His coming out story ties in a cast of supporting characters who supplement Toland's odyssey. One especially important character is Ginger Raines, Toland's first significant girlfriend. Toland's journey hinges on his relationship with Ginger, for her character and her relationship with Toland symbolized what society – as well as Toland –considered normal at the time. It is not until he lives past his relationship with Ginger, that he completely and utterly realizes the genuineness of his homosexuality. Indeed, his relationship with Ginger is momentous, however, the psychological reasons that led Toland into this relationship, and the sociological factors that led him away from this relationship are equally as alluring. The cause of this relationship is the offspring of the values instilled into Toland both by hisfamily and the cultural norms of the time. These norms consisted primarily of the idea of the nuclear family, the pervasive mindset of the time period. These contingencies were also paired with the burden of living up to societal norms. Ultimately, these led Toland to ultimately seek shelter in a heterosexual relationship, from the torment social ostracism. Stuck Rubber Baby entails an extraordinarily complex and rich tapestry of characters, deftly woven into the fabric of a consequential setting: The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. The Rights Of Women And People Of Color In the past two centuries the primary groups which had to fight for such rights were women and people of color. Now in the twenty–first century, a new group which knows no color and/or gender are verbally attacked for such ideas. This community is the homosexual community. Although there is more of a tolerance of homosexual citizens, in general they are still discriminated because often times one is not willing to accept a different lifestyle but rather practice ignorance to the situation. The idea of love for one another is nothing new. It is something that one learns overtime and practices over time. It is a fundamental human right for one to receive respect from peers despite being different. But rather punish one for practicing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fr. Osterreicher argues in his essay "Nostra Aetate" that all people, despite many different backgrounds are all the same, "All men form but one community. 1 This is because all stem from one stock which God created to the people the entire earth (cf. Acts 17:26)" (Osterreicher 2). This is not mainly a religious issue but a personal issue that affects us all and for that a call to tolerance means understanding one individual and his/her life. Another way that such a just world is possible is if one refuses to be ignorant and believes in stereotypes. As human beings, we are called to love one another and respect another as well as opinions and lifestyle and yet it is often difficult to do such a thing. There are many reasons why it is difficult to accept a person because of who they are. The most common reason is as said before, one is taught the various prejudices about a group. This happens for many reasons. Often times the ignorance is bliss mantra wins out in philosophy and becomes the normal thought. One is ignorant because one is afraid to challenge the status quo due to retribution. The community is however not the only ones at fault. Usually it also the stereotypes told by outside sources that cause such fear and lack of knowledge. Such is the case for homosexuals in America and other parts of the world. In the 1980's it was rumored that the AIDS epidemic was started with homosexual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Particularly, those religious parents who strongly believes that there are only two genders that should exist which are male and female. They sometimes resort to physical abuse the moment they find out that their child is homosexual in order for them to become straight. Although, some parents were able to take the news. Many of them are still going through something similar to a grieving action which include: denial, sense of loss, shock, anger and guilt. These combined emotions are understandable given our society's mental outlook towards lesbians, bisexuals and gays. Parents shouldn't blame themselves. • 36. Modest Tchaikovsky's Personal Life Tchaikovsky's personal life, and especially his sexuality, have been discussed to an extent that is very uncommon for most composers of his time. Although he achieved much success, he also suffered through much trauma. He often fell into depressive episodes, and worked through many trials, such as his mother's death, his own suppressed homosexuality, and the loss of his good friend and sponsor Nadezhda von Meck. His homosexuality was a source of much contention in his life. Writings to his brother, Modeste Tchaikovsky in 1876 reveal his decision to get married as it would mitigate the social effects of his homosexuality. He states, "I am now going through a very critical period of my life. I will go into more detail later, but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Homosexuality Essay Homosexuality No one knows exactly how homosexuality entered into human history. I would imagine that the practices associated with the erotic attraction of people to one's own gender have been around since the dawn of humanity. The earliest accounts of homosexual behavior seem to be found in ancient pagan religious practices. At least, the pagans included homosexuality in the worship of various gods. Whether the inclusion in worship was because the practice was already a part of the society–at–large or if the pagan worship introduced the practice is impossible to determine, although some understandings of Paul's writings argue for the latter. Human beings began to worship many gods very early in human history. These early gods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Male gods could plant seeds and were therefore seen as more productive than the female gods to some. When a man ejaculated his semen into another man's anus at the shrine, he was depositing more male power to the gods. With the additional strength of the semen of many men, the god could then insure a bountiful crop, a larger herd, and many children to care for the field. This practice grew into, not only forms of pagan worship, but also a means of supplying money for the temple. Catamites, boys and men who were exclusively used for passive anal sex, began to serve the temples. One must wonder whether boys were sometimes forced into this kind of sexual contact due to economic circumstances, much like their female counterparts. Women often survived only by prostitution since they were allowed no inheritance. Orphan boys may often have found themselves in the same predicament. Regardless, it was very early in human history that both male and female prostitutes were used in temple worship in order to raise funds for the temple, as well as support themselves. Homosexuality in Ancient Greece Greek culture is often promoted as the most accepting of homosexuality. To some extent, this may be true. The Greeks developed a hedonistic attitude toward the human body and sexuality. Although we may think of hedonism as lustful today, Greek philosophers wrote of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. In The Film 'Farewell My ConcubineAndThe King And The Clown' Drawing on the two films "Farewell my Concubine" and "The King and the Clown" will further explore how homosexuality is represented among China and South Korea. The film, "Farewell my Concubine" was one of the first and most significant discussions towards homosexuality being depicted on screen. It was released in the year 1993, covering the period of the Chinese social upheavals between the 1920s through to the 1970s in the setting of the Beijing Opera. The film raises the attitude of homosexuality in the most painful period of the traditional Chinese history, for the Chinese and Western viewers (Lau 1995, 22). According to Lau, this film was an opportunity to stimulate the inherent of the Beijing Opera in relation to the homosexual practices that were tolerated during the era (Lau 1995, 22). Zheng further suggested that the film was also a chance to understand the homophobic anxiety of the historical and political brutality in Chinese history (Zhang 1999, 101). The film attempts to illustrate that the Chinese cultural connections and homosexuality cannot coexist. The main protagonist, Cheng Dieyi, sense of identity is heavily reinforced by the power structure within the environment through harsh symbolic rapes. Lau suggested that the symbolic rapes, such as the loss of finger and getting a pipe forced into the mouth are indications of homosexuality (Lau 1995, 23). According to Zheng, the scene when Dieyi gets raped by the eunuch has exhibited Dieyi's disruption towards the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Judith Butler Religion A traditional view of homosexuality is that it is perceived as wrong. It is to be avoided, to be 'othered', and is subject to social abjection . In Judith Butler's Gender Trouble, she identifies a need for a new interpretation of gender against the previous regime of 'gender hierarchy and compulsory heterosexuality.' In this essay, I will argue that Judith Butler's approach togender politics is an improvement on previous attitudes towards homophobia. I will do this through a close contextual reading of Butler's work, particularly Gender Trouble and her article Imitation and Gender Insubordination. Butler calls for a more fluid, variable interpretation of gender that would strive for a new equality where subjects are not restricted to notions of masculinity or femininity . Butler herself argues that gender is performance and is false, and this act of doing is just a social construct. This then calls into question what the alternatives can be, and this essay will argue these improvements on attitudes towards homosexuality requires a deconstruction of attitudes towards gender. It will argue this through, firstly, establishing that a patriarchal societal regime with a mind towards procreation has the expectation of conformity to binary gender roles in place. From this, it can be drawn that sexual preference is inherently linked to gender construction, which needs to be challenged. And then from these first two premises it guides us to question what the binaries of 'male' or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Analysis Of The Movie ' The Imitation Game ' By Alan Turing What is socially appropriate? How or more so who decides what is appropriate? These questions have been asked, debated, and fought over since the dawn of civilization. The rhetor of the movie The Imitation Game integrates these questions into the true story of Alan Turing and the people around him. The rhetor allows these questions of appropriateness to be narrowed down to two very influential people in history to give these large, foundational questions a more personal touch, and for the audience to see the very personal consequence of society's decision. Throughout the film the question of the appropriateness of differing sexual orientations, gender roles, and social norms are questioned by allowing the audience to see how these aspects have been judged in the past and the consequences of society's decisions on a personal level. The first societal decision the rhetor questions is that of the appropriateness of gender roles. The main female character named Joan Clarke is the focus of the question of standard gender roles. In the film, Alan Turing fires two people he deemed useless, which caused vacancies with in the unit. To fulfill these open spots, he places a crossword puzzle in the newspaper. For those who solve it within ten minutes could report to the local government office. Upon arriving at the office, Joan Clarke is immediately questioned why she is there.
