Theme Of Irony In Hamlet
Irony is a literary device that signifies the opposite of its intended meaning. It is used for humorous
or emphatic effect. A rhetorical device that conveys a message that is clear to the audience but
unknown to the character.
There are three types of irony which include:
1). Dramatic irony : Occurs when the audience knows something that the characters do not.
2). Situational irony : Occurrence of unintended circumstances of events.
3). Verbal irony: Occurs when the speaker says the opposite of what they mean.
Irony is present throughout the tragic events in Hamlet. It is used throughout the entire play with the
help of these three types. Irony was used as a literary device in Hamlet to combine the two extremes
of humor and tragedy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the end of the play he is perceived to be dangerous although his original intention was to seem
harmless.
The other type of irony that can be found is the situational irony. It is the type of irony where
something happens that is not expected. One of the instance would be again from Act III Scene IV;
when Hamlet unintentionally kills Polonius as he was spying on Hamlet's conversation with his
mother . Hamlet suspects that the person spying on him is Claudius. Wanting to avenge his father, he
stabs him through the curtain but it turned out to be Polonius. Killing Polonius initiates a chain of
events that lead to his tragic death. Another incident is in Act V Scene II, when Hamlet gets the first
hit on Laertes and Laertes dies by poison as their swords were unknowingly switched. Laertes was
expected to draw first blood as he is a better skilled swordsman than Hamlet. However, he dies by
poison first because the sword that was intended to kill Hamlet was used on him.
Another type of irony i.e. the verbal irony takes place between Claudius and Hamlet. There is two–
facedness going on and its very ironic when they says one thing and mean another. For example, in
Act I Scene II, Claudius asks Hamlet, "How is it that the clouds still hang on you?" and Hamlet
responds by saying " I am too much in the sun". These play on words can have two meanings–( I )
Hamlet is doing well or (ii) Hamlet is suffering grief of his father's death. Another incident

Irony In The Screwtape Letters
A New Perspective "Above all, do not attempt to use science (I mean, the real sciences) as a defense
against Christianity. They will positively encourage him to think about realities he can't touch and
see. " Screwtape wrote this in the book by C.S Lewis called The Screwtape Letters. In The
Screwtape Letters Screwtape writes to his nephew, Wormwood, and instructs him on the proper
ways to tempt their 'patient'. Unfortunately, in the end C.S Lewis implies that Screwtape committed
cannibalism and consumed his nephew due to the unfortunate (for them) results of Wormwood's
attempted tempting. In this satirical book, C.S Lewis shows how the devil attempts to tempt us to
consume us in Hell. C.S Lewis uses irony and sarcasm to warn us of the dangers ... Show more

The Use Of Irony In 'The Sniper'
Irony is a very effective literary device to use to emphasize on an important message or a central
idea. There are three different types of irony, there is situational, dramatic and verbal irony. Irony
means saying one thing but meaning the opposite, it is the difference between what is expected and
reality. Irony is also an addition to get a theme across more effectively. In many short stories that
people read, irony is commonly used to help readers know and understand a very essential aspect of
a story. "The Sniper" by Liam O'Flaherty uses situational irony to tell people that war can turn
family against each other. Next, is "Just Lather and Nothing Else" by Hernando Tellez, has
situational irony and the author uses this irony to express that killing someone is much ... Show

Finally, Shirley Jackson's "The Possibility of Evil," includes dramatic irony and in this story, it is to
notify readers that looks can be deceiving. A work of literature that contains irony is a very
important way to help the reader know the meaning behind the story itself. In "The Sniper" by Liam
O'Flaherty, the author uses situational irony to make readers stop and think about the negative
effects of war. This type of irony is present to tell people that war is not only a horrifying adventure,
but it can turn "brother against brother." The story takes place in Dublin, Ireland in the year 1922.
During this time, there is a civil war going on between the Republicans and Free States. This story is
about a very skilled republican sniper who tries to kill his enemy, in which he succeeds but feels
guilty about it. The author foreshadows that the sniper knew his enemy by comparing how similar
they are. "When the sniper reached the laneway on

Irony In Canada
"As Canadian as possible under the circumstances" and "I'm not the Indian you had in mind" both
bring up very different, but very real problems in Canada. The essay "As Canadian as possible under
the circumstances", by Linda Hutcheon, the author, states that in Canadian culture and language,
people use irony very frequently as a means of mocking themselves or of a situation. The author
believes this is because of the doubleness that is part of Canadian culture, which causes many
underlying meanings in everything Canadians say or do. However, according to the author, the
double meanings can only be understood if people understand the context in which it is being used.
The author explains why irony is used in Canada by analyzing many reason ... Show more content

The most simplest message you can derive from the two works is, despite these problems being very
different, they must be dealt with in a similar way to each other and can not be ignored. Even,
though Canadians are said to be very kind and light–hearted, they must take seriously the mistakes
that were made in the past so that Canadians and Natives can move on and reconcile, and move
forward together. There are many differences and doubleness in Canadian culture, but it can be put
aside for a better future. Today, many Canadians still ignore what happened to Native people when
the British first came to Canada, but it can not be ignored or just put aside, leaving it in the past.
They have to take it seriously so that what happened in the past can be healed. The poem shows that
Canadians still have these stereotypes against Canadians and that something must be done about
these issues and the essay proves that Canadians are ironic people, and use that irony against others.
They can not now use irony as a new form of criticizing someone instead of stereotypes and
discrimination against the Indigenous of Canada. Canadians might mock themselves, but these two
problems must be dealt with together so that it does not escalate further and continue into the

Definition of Irony Essay
Definition of Irony
Irony is a word that has been around in my life since I was six years old. I remember it exactly, the
day that the word entered my vocabulary. My mom and I were driving to my grandma's house and I
was reading a "Calvin and Hobbes" comic from the paper earlier that morning. Calvin had been
saving a snowball in the freezer for 4 months and was going to use it. He snuck up on his nemesis,
Suzy, and threw it as hard as he could, and missed. He goes into hysterics, wondering how he could
have missed that perfect shot, while, at the same time Suzy is scooping up the pile of snow lying in
front of her. Calvin turns in time to see Suzy grinning as she hurls it in his face. The last panel has

This means that you can make fun of someone, and make them feel really dumb, which is something
that the media loves to do. The T.V. shows "Saturday Night Live", "Friends", "Fraiser", and "The
Simpsons" are all perfect examples of irony. "Fraiser" is a show that loves to use the concept of
irony to play with the characters of the show, getting them into some precarious situations.
Irony in entertainment isn't something new though. In greek tragedies, famous playwrights used
irony to entertain audiences for years. Sophicles used irony in one of his most famous plays,
"Oedipus" where a young couple, who were King and Queen of a land, were told by a prophecy that
their son would kill the father. Frightened by this knowledge, they took their son and chained him to
a mountain far away. A shepherd found the boy and raised him as his own. The boy grew to become
a man, and, while walking on a path, was told to move so that a royal coach may pass. He didn't
want to move and ended up killing all of the guards and the king himself. He then ventured to the
next town, which happened to be the city where his parents ruled, and wound up marrying the
queen. When they found out what had happened, he took a pin and jabbed out his eyes. The Greeks
knew that word as ironia, which is latin. They knew it to mean dissimulation, ignorance purposely
affected.

Irony in Pride and Prejudice
Irony in Pride and Prejudice
Irony forms the alma mater of Jane Austen's novels. Likewise, "Pride and Prejudice" is steeped in
irony of theme, situation, character, and narration. Austen uses it to establish the contrast between
appearance and reality.
As one examines "Pride and Prejudice", one discovers the ironic significance of how pride leads to
prejudice and prejudice invites pride. Importantly, the novel elucidates how both "Pride" and
"Prejudice" have their corresponding virtues bound up within them: an intricate relationship that is
at once contradictory yet deep.
This goes in parlance with the critics of Austen who hold that she used irony as a shield to express
her radical ideas. It enables her to expose the ills behind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mr. Darcy remarks about Elizabeth that: "tolerable but not handsome enough to tempt me..."
We relish the ironical flavour of this statement much later when we reflect that the woman who was
not handsome enough to dance with was really good enough for him tomarry. He removes Bingley
from Netherfield because he considers it imprudent to forge a marriage alliance with the Bennet
Family, but himself ends up marrying the second Bennet sister. Collins proposes to Elizabeth when
her heart is full of Wickham and Darcy proposes to her exactly at the moment when she hates him
most. Elizabeth tells Mr. Collins that she is not the type to reject the first proposal and accept the
second but does exactly this when Darcy proposes a second time. The departure of the militia from
Meryton was expected to put an end to Lydia's flirtations. Ironically, it brings about her elopement.
The Lydia–Wickham episode may seem like an insurmountable barrier between Elizabeth and
Darcy, but is actually instrumental in bringing them together. Lady Catherine, attempting to prevent
their marriage only succeeds in hastening it.
Irony in character is even more prominent than irony of situation. It is ironical that Elizabeth who
prides herself on her perception is quite blinded by her own prejudices and she errs in judging
intricate characters. Wickham appears suave and charming but is

Irony In Political Irony
Irony as a Trap: A Polling Device for Socio–Political Awareness
Abstract
This text explores how irony functions in the field of art and beyond, driven by the current socio–
political situation. The functionality of irony considered as a device is analyzed and tested on/
applied in four different cases while the potential power of a political (de)stabilization of this device
is highlighted. The cases are chosen in accordance with the controversial relation between
anticipation and contingency, intention and result, whose gap is where irony emerges. Irony is
employed as a trap, and such traps as a prism through which to view the present socio–political
context.

As the Professor of Philosophy Berel Lang15 puts it, "Irony discloses its purpose not in its
individual assertions or truths but in the common manner of their rendering" 16. Irony is a cultural–
specific issue, thus it cannot not be considered a common universal value. It seems to be an
interpretation which is expected to be interpreted. Despite the fact that irony is an authoritarian
means, in my perspective, it has the potentiality of self–repression due to the cultural, social and
political gaps that reveal following the inconsistency between the ironist intention and the recipient
interpretation. Exactly there is where irony's political potential activates. Due to those gaps the
power is being agitated and a negotiation of power is generated within a authoritarian

The Namesake Irony Quotes
Is it ironic that Gogol Ganguli's true good name was lost in the mail? Would the story have
progressed in the same pattern? Would the obvious self–identity crisis Gogol faced throughout the
novel be present? Would there even be a novel? All these questions focus around the same core:
irony. Lahiri capitalizes this literary device to develop the plot of the Namesake. To think that the
whole book is rooted in one lost letter is ironic. All the struggles, Gogol undergoes to try to define
himself would have been irrelevant if the letter, containing his good name, would have arrived
successfully from his Grandmother (Caesar). Additionally, Lahiri delves into irony's literary
capabilities to reveal a character's life lessons and perspectives in the four main characters (Gilroy).
However, she primarily uses irony to further the theme seed of identity crisis, mainly for the
character Gogol. Throughout the novel The Namesake, Lahiri uses irony to illustrate one of the main
character's, Gogol, identity crisis in order to show how the discrepancy of conflicting cultures and
ideas can impact one's sense of who they are.
Lahiri highlights various types of irony to explore the identity ... Show more content on

Whether we realize it or not, we all at some point in time, face an identity crisis. Not saying that
each person has a lifelong identity struggle, but everyone at one time questions their existence and
their future. What we all need to realize is the undeniable truth we are our own person; undefinable
human beings. We mold our own personalities, paths, and relationships (Caesar). All of the ironic
events in Gogol's life, "things that never should have happened, that seemed out of place and wrong,
these were what prevailed, are what endured in the end" (Lahiri 287). Our failures, successes, and
heritage are all parts of who we are, not what we are as Gogol has learned. At the end of the day, if

Realism: The Ending and Its Irony
Irony is common in realist novels that reveal the fall and/or rise of characters among other aspects. It
is mostly shown at the end which is usually tragic but tell readers the fate of the characters. Realist
novels have plausible events, with cause and effect in their stories – what the characters desire and
the consequences they receive because of that. Realism in the novel, The House of Mirth by Edith
Wharton, was clearly shown through Lily Bart's character with its ironic ending that had both her
fall and rise as a character. She was known for her beauty in the novel; she made various mistakes in
the process of entering the high social status. Her physical beauty was not enough to establish
herself in society if her name was not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yes, he could now read into that farewell all that his heart craved to find there; he could even draw
from it courage not to accuse himself for having failed to reach the height of his opportunity" (349).
Lily's dead body on her bed in the last chapter reminded him of their times together, and reassured
him of the love he had for her throughout the story. The readers were focused more on their
romantic love and it was ironic that her dead body indicated the love. Her unconsciousness helped
Selden declare his love for her in silence.
The last lines of the novel were significant to both Selden and Lily as they describe and depict the
honest feelings of Selden's character. They were also perhaps the most ambiguous lines of the novel,
"He knelt by the bed over her, draining their last moment to its lees; and in the silence there passed
between them the word which made all clear" (350). The line "draining their last moment to its lees"
suggests that it was their last moment together, but she was not alive. It was his last moment with
her, yet he was savoring it as the last loving moment between them. Such a scene can come off as
strange but it showed that even with her "unrecognizing face," he still loved her because, "it was her
real self" (345). He disregarded her appearance and condition to just stay by her side one last time; it
took her dead body for him to realize and reassure his feelings for her. It was her

Frankenstein Irony Analysis
Ironic Devices Irony is most commonly used in dialogue to express sarcasm and humor, however it
can also be applied to add depth to literature. Mary Shelley employs irony in Frankenstein to
emphasize the truth and prompt her readers to question pivotal concepts. Her use of irony does not
intended for humor, but instead, she utilizes ironic devices to enhance her overall themes and
convey the unpredictable consequences of actions. Verbal irony is often confusing, since it expresses
a different meaning than what it may seem. Shelley periodically uses verbal irony, and she uses to to
convey how language can easily be misinterpreted leading to unexpected consequences. For
example, the monster threatens Victor, "I will be with you on your wedding night" (Shelley 123).
Considering that the monster is directly speaking to Victor, the use of the word "you" is directed at
Victor, causing him to believe that he will be attacked. As a result, he anticipates the monster's
arrival and tries to prepare for the upcoming threat. Unfortunately, the monster actually implied that
he would kill Elizabeth, making Elizabeth the one who will be attacked. Despite Victor's attempt to
predict and calculate the monster's actions, he misunderstands the monster's irony, and Elizabeth
faces the fatal consequence. The confusion created by verbal irony functions to reveal the monster's
unpredictable nature.
In addition, the author does not include many clear paradoxes. the monster also reveals a

Irony In Desiree's Baby
Irony in "Desiree's Baby" Irony in literature adds a certain depth and poignancy which makes
reading fiction so engaging. In addition to supplying wordplay and humor, it sometimes plays an
integral role in the tone and outcome of a story. Irony is not to be interchangeable with sarcasm,
although verbal irony typically employs a sarcastic voice for its message. Sarcasm by definition in
Perrine's Literature as "...language one uses to belittle or ridicule another" (Arp 359). Verbal irony is
quite different in its definition. Verbal irony, the easiest form to identify, varies slightly. This form
simply means that the speaker's intent differs from what he or she says. The other two forms of irony
are dramatic irony and situational irony. Dramatic irony is a connection between the reader and the
character. While the reader might believe something to be a certain way, the reader knows if the
thought is true or false. This technique, as the name would indicate, leads to an element of drama
and suspense. Because the reader might expect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

of the story, after Desiree and her baby have disappeared into the swamps out of shame and
humiliation. Armand burns all of his wife's belongings, including a letter written by his mother that
he has never read. Its message reveals that Armand, in fact, is the person carrying the African
American heritage. This is a sample of irony of situation, because Armand falsely accuses and
banishes Desiree, when he is the one that, under his belief system, should be banished. The story
ends there, with the reader drawing back in disbelief in regards to what they have just read. The
surprise ending, with the usage of situational irony, shocks the reader. It also completes the moral of
the story, that prejudice is damaging and

"Ironic isn't it". We often use this term during our daily lives but what does it mean. Irony means
saying something else and meaning the opposite. Irony can make a significant impact in shaping the
message behind a story.(Add 1 more sentence) An author has many methods to convey a message
within a short story. An effective method to develop theme is the use of irony. For example in
Stanton's "Barney" irony is used to support the subject that conducting science experiments can be
deadly; further in "Story of an Hour" Chopin's efficient use of irony develops the theme of feminism
showing freedom for the women; in O'Henry's "Gift of the Magi" the irony reveals that the gift of

the news, which she presented in "veiled hints". Upon hearing the news, Mrs. Mallard "wept at

Mallard is dead and headed off to her room. In Mrs. Mallard's room she sat in "a comfortable"
armchair, facing the window. This shows that Mrs. Mallard was not feeling "uncomfortable" or
"abandoned" by the death of her husband. Through the window Mrs. Mallard sensed "the delicious
breath of rain" and saw the "tops of trees quiver with the new spring life". This situation irony states
that usually when a woman losses her husband she goes into a state of shock and beats the furniture
around instead of thinking that it is "comfortable". One would not look out the window and see
"new spring life" upon losing a loved one but instead close the window and sit in the dark. This
irony contributes to the theme by showing the difference in Mrs. Mallard because she goes form

device to create suspense. The types of irony, they use is verbal, dramatic, and situational irony.
Initially, verbal irony is when what is said contradicts what is meant. The author uses verbal irony to
create suspense by having the actor who plays Shara say,"It's a piece of cake," even though the

response to this. Another one is when Hoggle says,"I will not hurt her," but he gave her the peach

Children and Irony Essay
Children and Irony
Irony is, among many other reasons, problematic in the sense that it is both hard to define as well as
sometimes hard to understand. Even the most critical and experienced of readers have missed
instances of irony at times, and even more so ordinary readers.
Furthermore, traditional conceptions of irony almost always talk about the "ignorant" audience that
fails to detect the irony alongside the "knowing" audience that does detect it. These conceptions
generally take a hierarchical view with regards to irony, commonly regarding those that fail to "get"
the irony as being uneducated or ignorant (Hutcheon, 94). Interestingly however, these conceptions
are almost always discussed with the idea that the audience (or ... Show more content on

Firstly, it assumes that children are necessarily less complex than adults in their communicative
ability. Secondly, it holds true to the notion that those who fail to understand irony are inferior and
less sophisticated. Combining the two assumptions, the logic is that because children are necessarily
less complex and sophisticated than adults, and because those who cannot "get" irony are also less
sophisticated beings, it then follows that children, being less sophisticated, therefore cannot "get"
irony as well. It is an insidious line of logic and problematic at best, because it fixes children (and
those who don't get irony) immovably as being inferior by labeling them as such without any
explanation and justification. Such rigid labeling also causes the logic to breakdown when it fails to
address the issue of transition from childhood to adulthood. If children are necessarily inferior and
adults superior, how do children automatically lose their inferiority when they grow up? Given the
problems and injustices of following such an approach, one would do well to begin by establishing a
viable alternative to the elitist notion of irony and consequently open the door towards bringing
children to a more equitable position with respect to understanding irony.
In dealing with the elitist notion of irony, it would be best to draw upon Hutcheon as she deals with
this view in her work by offering a non–hierarchical alternative. In Irony's

Irony Irony is the use of words to express something different and often opposite to its literal
meaning and it is a device that plays a major role in revealing the theme of a literary work. In
Inferno, written by Niven and Pournelle, the main character, Allan Carpentier, travels into the depths
of hell and finally escapes when he realizes who he is. Throughout his journey, the other people in
hell do not want to accept that they are there, which in turn, is the reason they cannot leave hell.
Those people could not accept who they really were as individuals and therefore could not move on.

Barbee's speech made him feel as if he was attached to the college, but this speech is in fact coming

eyes. Homer A. Barbee was blind" (133). It is ironic that a blind man is giving the narrator hope
about the college when he himself cannot see it. The narrator is letting himself be deceived because
he does not see the ironies he faces at the college. Through the individuals and experiences at the
college, Ellison conveys his theme of invisibility. On the bus to New York, Ellison deliberately

acceptance from other people or institutions, and to find acceptance within himself. In New York the

Irony in Poetry Essay
Irony is the use of words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning. It is used throughout poetry
and allows the reader to analyze and differentiate what seems, and what actually is. There are
different types of irony including verbal, situational, and dramatic. Irony can be used in the titles of
poems, or in themes and messages throughout them. There are many ways to interpret poetry, so
irony is a powerful way of making a pointed comment or manipulating a reader's emotions. Verbal
irony, sometimes referred to as sarcasm, often occurs in the title of a poem, and is in direct contrast
with the contents of the poem. "The Unknown Citizen" written by W.H Auden is an excellent
example of this. They irony of the title, is that right ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dramatic irony occurs when the reader is aware of more than the character in the narrative. The
reader possibly sees the significance of a characters actions before the actual character does. Again,
"Porphyria's Lover" is a poem that also exhibits dramatic irony. By the end of this poem, the reader
is aware that the main character is a psychopathic killer, however, he is completely unaware that his
actions were wrong. After he murders Porphyria, believing that he had fulfilled her wish to be with
him forever, he "warily oped her lids: again laughed the blue eyes without a stain. And I untightened

Irony In The Cask Of Amontillado
Irony is defined as a literary technique used to create humour and other emotions for the reader, like
suspense or tension. There are three different types of irony, dramatic, situational, and verbal.
Dramatic irony is created when the reader knows something that the character or narrator doesn't
and is mostly used to create suspense. Situational irony, unlike dramatic, is mostly used for humour.
Situational irony is when the opposite of what is expected to happen, happens. Verbal irony is
similar to situational as it is used to create humour, but verbal is specifically when something spoken
is the opposite of what is meant. Although they are three different types, they are all used to create
either suspense or humor. Irony is used effectively ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This in itself is ironic, as many stories are written and told about family members being elated that
their loved ones have returned from war. The irony in "My Oedipus Complex" doesn't stop there.
The narrator of the story, Larry, is young and says things that are often very ironic but seem normal
to him, such as "do you think if I prayed hard God would send Daddy back to the war?" (O'Connor
66). This example of verbal irony is very humorous, as many pray to have their loved ones sent back
to them, not away from them. With such a peculiar perspective of war that only a young person
could have, the reader is drawn in further to the story. Another example of irony creating humor
occurs when Larry is quite upset that he has to stay quiet while his father is sleeping. He is disturbed
deeply by the notion of being quiet when he wants to talk and thinks to himself "whose house was it,
anyway?" (O'Connor 68). Although this is a serious comment to a young child like Larry who
simply doesn't know it sounds funny, it is very humorous to older people who know that he doesn't
own the house, his parents do. Irony is also used to create humor when Larry is trying to discover
why his father and mother liked each other. Larry thought that his father "was less winning"
(O'Connor 70) than he was. Young Larry has no idea why his parents like each other, yet the

Irony In Fahrenheit 451
The Irony of Montag
From a general perspective, literature works are more interesting for the readers when these include
a sequence of events that result in unexpected outcomes. If every book you read had exactly what
you expected, it would become boring. The fact that the end of a novel is different from what the
reader assumes, is what gives life to a story. Readers choose books by their content of conflicts, and
often prefer books that are not vague or predictable. The book Fahrenheit 451, is a literary work
with various unanticipated incidents; termed ironies. The main character named Montag, is the cause
of these ironies. More than one type of irony is identified. There are several literary devices used in
short stories, novel, poems, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Readers will know there must be a reason why he thought that way when burning things, and will
ask themselves why Montag said; "It was a pleasure to burn. It was a pleasure to see things eaten, to
see things blackened and changed" (Bradbury 1). Fireman or pyromaniac. He is presented to the
reader as a fireman; however, the descriptions of Montag's actions are misleading–making one
believe he is a pyromaniac. Statistically speaking, various readers would share the same view if they
analyze Guy Montag's word choice when describing the action of burning.
The novel contains different types of irony. The literary device irony, is classified in three types:
verbal, situational, and dramatic. Situational irony is when what happens is the opposite to what is
expected. Fahrenheit 451 has examples of these three types of ironies. Books such as: Frankenstein,
My Son's Story, Of Mice and Men, and the short story "The Cask of Amontillado," also contain
different types of ironies. The first example of an irony in Fahrenheit 451 is shown when Guy
Montag is presented to the reader as a fireman who liked to burn. That could be considered a
situational irony, and a dramatic irony, because a fireman does not start fires, on the contrary, they
put out fires. Therefore, the reader is not expecting a fireman to viciously burn things. Also, the
character is unaware about the real duties of a fireman, the reader is not. The book My Son's Story,
also created a situational irony. It

Examples Of Irony In Medea
In Medea, Euripides uses irony to convey the fact that the female protagonist is strong in the
androcentric society and the male protagonist is weak. In the article "Male Medea," Nancy
Rabinowitz describes the protagonist as "the transgressive woman, [or man] inside the woman's
body, and her story gives the lie to the gender story––of the woman as victim" (16). Medea, the
female protagonist, has the power to control and manipulate any character in the play. This is proven
when the Tutor says "Madam, your sons do not have to go into exile; the royal bride gladly took the
gifts in her hands; there's peace now, with her and the children" (1001–3). This represents irony
because the sons do not go into exile, but are instead killed by their masculine, ... Show more

In "Stereotype and Reversal in Euripides' Medea," Shirley A. Barlow argues that the protagonist
refuses to play the customary role of an ancient Greek woman, except when it benefits her, which
shows that Medea is a reversed stereotype (158). This is further shown when the Tutor states, "Take
heart! You too, will, journey back with children's help" (1015). In this circumstance, the Tutor is
declaring how the children will be able to help their mother come back home, yet this is an example
of dramatic irony because Medea ultimately kills her children at the end for revenge. Euripides uses
dramatic irony to convey Medea's strength and power. The characters mistakenly assume that Medea
is weak, yet her will–power and desire for revenge is shown when she kills her sons. Next, Jason is
expected to be strong and powerful, yet is weaker than any female. Rabinowitz also speculates that
Jason's role has feminine aspects: "Jason would seem to be the perfect example of a woman with a
man" (152). For example, Jason exclaims, "I have come, however, to save my children's lives, to
keep the king's family from making them pay for the foul murder committed by their mother"
(1303–5). Jason hastily runs back to the house to save his children from a masculine

Irony In A Modest Proposal
Jonathan Swift, one of the greatest writers in the world, used lots of satires in his article "A Modest
Proposal" in order to criticize the disability of the ancient hierarchical society in the Ireland, the
anti–human behaviors, the tyranny of the wealth English and the superior method of Irish Catholic.
Although the tone and the words used in the article all show the ironies, the examples narrator used
most strongly showed the irony.
The title of the article is "A Modest proposal" because the article was based on the famine in the
18th century when Irish were also suffered from the high taxes made by the landlords in the Ireland.
So the condition of the country was really like a disaster where "they are every Day dying, and

season throughout the year" (Swift 3), "An infant can make four dishes" (Swift 3), "As we do
roasting pigs (Swift 4)". It might be really uncomfortable for the normal people, but the narrator just
illustrated the dishes of infant as the pig meat in the market, as a metaphor, peacefully, so this
ironically revealed the attitude of the wealthy people and the government's indifferences to the Irish.
Moreover, no people in the government, high level in the society, against this idea, and everyone

A paradox is an apparent contradiction that is nevertheless somehow true either a situation or a
statement.
In a paradoxical statement the contradiction usually stems from one of the words being used
figuratively or with more than one denomination.
Overstatement, understatement, and verbal irony form a continuous series, for they consist,
respectively, of saying more, less, or opposite of what one really means. In service of truth.
Sarcasm is simply bitter or cutting speech, intended to wound the feelings.
Satire is a more formal term, usually applied to written literature rather than to speech and ordinarily
implying a higher motive: it is ridicule of human folly or vice.

Ironies of The Story of the Hour by Kate Chopin
I. Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" is a story of irony. Irony is an incongruity between
expectations for a situation and what is reality. Chopin uses three forms of irony in her story:
situational, verbal, and dramatical in her story.
II. Verbal Irony– The use of words to mean something different than what they appear to mean.

The Irony in these two stories is initially expressed by their titles. At the Beginning of Enemies,
Jensen and Strunk are violently opposed to one another althoguh they are fighting on the same side
of a brutal war. At the end of Friends, although Jensen didn't take action to kill Strunk, he is relieved
rather than aggrieved to learn of Strunk's death, although the two are supposed to now be friends.
These stories represent the war's view on friendship, and how distorted that emotion becomes.

Irony In Apology
Different linguists have varying definition of irony. Fowler (1994) suggested that Irony "postulates a
double audience, consisting of one party that hearing shall hear, and shall not understand, and
another party that, when more is meant than meets the ear, is aware both of that more and the
outsider's incomprehension". Verschueren (1999) simply defines that irony means what is
understood is opposite of what is said. Throughout the years, this idea is a core characteristic found
in most linguistic as well as literary work on irony. This opposite between the figurative and literal
meaning, thus, leads to the fact that irony is a trope. (Hutcheon, 1992)
Irony, as mentioned above, is divided into four main categories: Socratic irony, situational ... Show

This type of irony origins from Socrates – a classical Greek philosopher. In his conversations with
others, he often "played the fool" to make people present about their knowledge, and then asked
questions to expose the weaknesses in their argument. One example of Socratic irony is in Apology
– written by Plato. Socrates pretends to be innocent and ignorant to reveal that his accusers cannot
persuade him of anything although they claimed that they are really talented at it.
Situational irony is a different type of irony that refers to what happens is completely different from
what is expected. In contrast to Socratic irony which is usually found in academia, situational irony
is usually encountered in daily life. Some examples of this might be the image of a fire station
burning down or posting on Facebook complaining how useless Facebook is.
Dramatic irony is the irony happens when the audiences know significant information that key
characters do not. Thus, this type of irony is attainable in the world of arts, such as poems, plays or
novel. Quite a few illustrations about dramatic irony could be found in Shakespeare's work. For
instance, in the famous play Romeo and Juliet, the audience know that Juliet is still alive, yet Romeo

Irony in Chopin's "The Story of an Hour"
"The story of an hour" by Kate Chopin is described as a story of great irony having many
unexpected twists and turns. Situational and dramatic irony is used throughout the story. This is a
story of a woman who finds out her husband's death in a train accident and reacts with sadness in the
beginning, but then realizes a freedom and relief from her repressive life. She experiences a
complete joy over the death of her husband and dies from the shock of discovering that he is still
alive. The first type of irony encountered is a situational irony, where there is a contrast between

Mallard "and referred to as "she" for most of the narrative. Only when Louise has become "free
body, free soul!" , she is addressed directly in the text by he own name. Regardless of the love and
care she has for her husband, the problem she sees is the unequal relationship in which one
individual exercises his powerful will on the other. This is the reason that she is now regaining her
freedom. It seems from the description that Mrs. Mallard has been trapped in this marriage for a
long and she wants independence from her unhappy marriage. Hence, Chopin uses irony in the story
to show the unequal relationship in late 1800's.
In the story, the label that Chopin gives to Mrs. Mallard's problem is "heart trouble' which involves
both physical and emotional factors. Similarly, I think it's very ironic for the writer to use the phrase
"joy that kills" in the last sentence of the story because it is actual joy that Mrs. Mallard feels when
she realizes her husband is dead, and pain so great that kills her when she sees her husband walking
through the door. However, other characters are unaware of the transformation that has occurred in
Mrs. Mallard. The dramatic irony in the end is that Louise doesn't die because of joy as the doctor
claims but actually because of loss of joy. Her husband's death gives her a glimpse of new life and
when that new life is swiftly taken away, the shock and disappointment kills her. Therefore, the main

Irony in Literature
Irony and satire are probably most usually met means of expressing humour in literary works. Both
of these means can be similar and very different at the same time. In some cases irony and satire can
be used as synonyms. Both satire and irony can be found in literature, television, movies, theatre and
even in artwork. Satire, however, is a genre, whereas irony is a technique.
Irony
Irony and humour are closely related. This relation can be seen with dictionary definition. Oxford
English dictionary defines irony as "1. the expression of one's meaning by using language that
normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect: 'Don't go overboard with
the gratitude,' he re–joined with heavy irony; 1.1 a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately

It can be used intentionally or can happen unintentionally. Irony is widely used in general literature
and in psychological literary works as well. Authors can use irony to make their audience stop and

irony are often used for emphasis in the assertion of a truth.
There are several types of irony in literature. Three main types are verbal irony, dramatic irony, and
situational irony.
Verbal irony – the contrast between what is being said and what is meant. E.g. soft like a brick;

Dramatic irony – the contrast between what the character thinks to be true and what the reader
knows to be true. In some literary fiction the reader is revealed more information than the character.

Examples Of Irony In 1984
Examples of Irony in 1984 In the novel 1984, irony is used by George Orwell to bring attention to
the corrupt totalitarian society and brainwashing of the public by the books evil political group
known as "The Party". Irony is a style of writing in which there is a noticeable difference between
what is said and the intended meaning. Verbal irony is used in the book when the Party's three
slogans are first mentioned. "WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS
STRENGTH" (4, Orwell). "War is Peace" is said while the country is constantly in a state of war,
this is ironic because although the country is at combat this is maintaining peace among the public
by distracting it from the corrupt political atmosphere around them. "Freedom is Slavery" is ironic
because the outer party is enslaved to the government while the inner party leaders have total
freedom because of the people's lack of power. Lastly, "Ignorance is Strength" because the
obliviousness of the public provides more control to the party leaders because the nation is unaware
of what is truly happening. These slogans are not only ironic but examples of an oxymoron because
the statements are contradictory. This is one of the many examples of the irony in the novel. With

Stress as defined by Merriam–Webster states that stress is "a force exerted when one body or body
part presses on, pulls on, pushes against, or tends to compress or twist another body or body part,." I
believe that in Gregors situation his transformation as a whole brought stress on his body, mind, and
spirit. On his body obviously, was the most to be affected by stress. Trying to adjust with such a
body when ones never experienced such a thing can be a challenging thing. "He was laying on his
hard armor–plated back and when he lifted his head a little he could see his domelike brown belly
divided into bow–shaped ridges..." (p. 494). Waking up from your sleep and seeing a monstrous
body instead of your own can cause a word wind of stress. The body changes that occurred caused a
lot of stress on Gregors family as well. His mother especially was very shocked to see him transform
from man to bug overnight. Watching him hang from the wall caused her anxiety and she fainted.
It's ironic that she fainted because she knew of his extra extremities and his huge hard back, but still
the sight freaked her out. Gregor also identified his

Irony As A Trap Essay
Irony as a Trap: A Polling Device for Socio–Political Awareness
Abstract
This text explores how irony functions in the field of art and beyond, driven by and based on the
current socio–political situation. The functionality of irony considered as a device is analyzed and
tested on/ applied in four different cases while the potential power of a political (de)stabilization of
this device is highlighted. The cases are chosen in accordance with the controversial relation
between anticipation and contingency, intention and result, whose gap is where irony emerges. Irony
is employed as a trap, and such traps as a prism through which to view the present socio–political
context.

They are often accused of reinforcing the very status quo they are opposed to instead of subverting
it. As Pills and Gallia Kollectiv write: " Ironic distance is ambiguous. It grounds both critique and
detached resignation to the status quo." 25 Their opinion about those practises is that the way in
which irony is used in contemporary art: through imitation, identification and exaggeration, the
participants [...] do not attempt to make themselves different, to demonstrate their uniqueness and
their resistance to social norms. They wish, on the contrary, to get as close as possible to the image
of the other, to become one with the image of 'normalising' institutions." 26
In that case this image could be just one more representational form of political art. 27 Having this
as strategy is it possible to make a critic, to preach to the converted?
Although the same Kollective supports overidentification as a political form of resistance, they find
necessary to redefine the way irony used in overidentification and to expand the term
overidentification beyond art. They consider overidentification as "a special case of irony that
retains a critical potential."

Situational Irony In Dracula
Despite seemingly unimportant to a novel, irony plays a crucial role in Dracula. This particular
novel, however, takes irony a step further and some pieces of irony can even be analyzed so as to be
justified through the Victorian values of the respective time period. Although this particular novel
was first written and released in 1897, which was a prominently Victorian era and period of history,
Dracula has managed to retain its prominence, popularity, and glory over the years. Likewise, the
novel has also exponentially grown upon this prominence as well. The most popular example of this

One explicit example of situational irony would undeniably be when Lucy is in the process of
recovery. Lucy's mother, rather unexpectedly, ends up removing the garlic flowers and ultimately
spoiling the recovery process. "I feared the heavy odour would be too much for the dear child...so I
took them all away and opened a bit of the window to let in a little fresh air" (Stoker 129). The
situational irony in this quote is that Van Helsing had never expected Lucy's mother to be the one
individual who essentially ended up sealing Lucy's fate, as she was left defenseless without the
garlic flowers in the room and the window was left wide open for Count Dracula to enter and attack
Lucy. One more example of situational irony would be in regards with the importance of Mina to
her male counterparts, as she is heavily undermined and judged throughout the entirety of the novel
primarily and solely due to her gender. "Ah, that wonderful Madam Mina! She has man's brain...and
a woman's heart" (335). Despite being undermined constantly, however, Mina effectively continues

expected. It makes the reader want to read more. Irony is, the expression of one's meaning by using
language (action or a situation) that signifies the opposite. Kiera Cass uses irony to make the book
more interesting by using it in the most random places so the boring parts become some of the best
parts. In The Heir, irony is used to show a quality

Irony in Antigone
Irony in Antigone When one begins to read Antigone, they may find it very easy to recognize the use
of irony throughout the work. The author, Sophocles, was known to work his plots into lines in
which tragic irony would occur over and over. He would then bring lines that had been spoken
previously in a play in later to form a climax of the drama (Johns). Sophocles used "tragic irony"
often in Antigone, along with other plays that he has written. "'Tragic irony' whereby a character's
words carry a deeper and more sinister meaning for the audience than the character speaking them
intends to impart (Dawe)." Not only does he use tragic irony, but he also uses verbal irony and even
some situational irony all throughout Antigone. Creon is a character known throughout the play to
display a large number of verbal irony. Irony begins working its way into the play at the very
beginning of the play, during the prologue. During the prologue of the play Antigone is with her
sister, Ismene. While with her, she begins to beg Ismene to help her go against the new law set by
Creon, find her brother Polyneices' body and bury him properly. Antigone believes that Polyneices
deserves a proper burial just as their brother Eteocles received after his death. Antigone shows
verbal irony while trying to persuade her sister to help her by calling Creon "good Creon" when she
says, "that is what they say, and our good Creon is coming here/To announce it publicly; and the
penalty–/Stoning to death in

Theme Of Irony In Hamlet

  • 1. Theme Of Irony In Hamlet Irony is a literary device that signifies the opposite of its intended meaning. It is used for humorous or emphatic effect. A rhetorical device that conveys a message that is clear to the audience but unknown to the character. There are three types of irony which include: 1). It is used throughout the entire play with the help of these three types. Irony was used as a literary device in Hamlet to combine the two extremes of humor and tragedy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the end of the play he is perceived to be dangerous although his original intention was to seem harmless. The other type of irony that can be found is the situational irony. It is the type of irony where something happens that is not expected. One of the instance would be again from Act III Scene IV; when Hamlet unintentionally kills Polonius as he was spying on Hamlet's conversation with his mother . Hamlet suspects that the person spying on him is Claudius. Wanting to avenge his father, he stabs him through the curtain but it turned out to be Polonius. Killing Polonius initiates a chain of events that lead to his tragic death. Another incident is in Act V Scene II, when Hamlet gets the first hit on Laertes and Laertes dies by poison as their swords were unknowingly switched. Laertes was expected to draw first blood as he is a better skilled swordsman than Hamlet. However, he dies by poison first because the sword that was intended to kill Hamlet was used on him. Another type of irony i.e. the verbal irony takes place between Claudius and Hamlet. There is two– facedness going on and its very ironic when they says one thing and mean another. For example, in Act I Scene II, Claudius asks Hamlet, "How is it that the clouds still hang on you?" and Hamlet responds by saying " I am too much in the sun". These play on words can have two meanings–( I ) Hamlet is doing well or (ii) Hamlet is suffering grief of his father's death. Another incident ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Irony In The Screwtape Letters A New Perspective "Above all, do not attempt to use science (I mean, the real sciences) as a defense against Christianity. They will positively encourage him to think about realities he can't touch and see. " Screwtape wrote this in the book by C.S Lewis called The Screwtape Letters. In The Screwtape Letters Screwtape writes to his nephew, Wormwood, and instructs him on the proper ways to tempt their 'patient'. Unfortunately, in the end C.S Lewis implies that Screwtape committed cannibalism and consumed his nephew due to the unfortunate (for them) results of Wormwood's attempted tempting. In this satirical book, C.S Lewis shows how the devil attempts to tempt us to consume us in Hell. C.S Lewis uses irony and sarcasm to warn us of the dangers ... • 5. The Use Of Irony In 'The Sniper' Irony is a very effective literary device to use to emphasize on an important message or a central idea. There are three different types of irony, there is situational, dramatic and verbal irony. Irony means saying one thing but meaning the opposite, it is the difference between what is expected and reality. Irony is also an addition to get a theme across more effectively. In many short stories that people read, irony is commonly used to help readers know and understand a very essential aspect of a story. "The Sniper" by Liam O'Flaherty uses situational irony to tell people that war can turn family against each other. Next, is "Just Lather and Nothing Else" by Hernando Tellez, has situational irony and the author uses this irony to express that killing someone is much ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Finally, Shirley Jackson's "The Possibility of Evil," includes dramatic irony and in this story, it is to notify readers that looks can be deceiving. A work of literature that contains irony is a very important way to help the reader know the meaning behind the story itself. In "The Sniper" by Liam O'Flaherty, the author uses situational irony to make readers stop and think about the negative effects of war. This type of irony is present to tell people that war is not only a horrifying adventure, but it can turn "brother against brother." The story takes place in Dublin, Ireland in the year 1922. During this time, there is a civil war going on between the Republicans and Free States. This story is about a very skilled republican sniper who tries to kill his enemy, in which he succeeds but feels guilty about it. The author foreshadows that the sniper knew his enemy by comparing how similar they are. "When the sniper reached the laneway on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Irony In Canada "As Canadian as possible under the circumstances" and "I'm not the Indian you had in mind" both bring up very different, but very real problems in Canada. The essay "As Canadian as possible under the circumstances", by Linda Hutcheon, the author, states that in Canadian culture and language, people use irony very frequently as a means of mocking themselves or of a situation. The author believes this is because of the doubleness that is part of Canadian culture, which causes many underlying meanings in everything Canadians say or do. However, according to the author, the double meanings can only be understood if people understand the context in which it is being used. The author explains why irony is used in Canada by analyzing many reason ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most simplest message you can derive from the two works is, despite these problems being very different, they must be dealt with in a similar way to each other and can not be ignored. Even, though Canadians are said to be very kind and light–hearted, they must take seriously the mistakes that were made in the past so that Canadians and Natives can move on and reconcile, and move forward together. There are many differences and doubleness in Canadian culture, but it can be put aside for a better future. Today, many Canadians still ignore what happened to Native people when the British first came to Canada, but it can not be ignored or just put aside, leaving it in the past. They have to take it seriously so that what happened in the past can be healed. The poem shows that Canadians still have these stereotypes against Canadians and that something must be done about these issues and the essay proves that Canadians are ironic people, and use that irony against others. They can not now use irony as a new form of criticizing someone instead of stereotypes and discrimination against the Indigenous of Canada. Canadians might mock themselves, but these two problems must be dealt with together so that it does not escalate further and continue into the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Definition of Irony Essay Definition of Irony Irony is a word that has been around in my life since I was six years old. I remember it exactly, the day that the word entered my vocabulary. My mom and I were driving to my grandma's house and I was reading a "Calvin and Hobbes" comic from the paper earlier that morning. Calvin had been saving a snowball in the freezer for 4 months and was going to use it. He snuck up on his nemesis, Suzy, and threw it as hard as he could, and missed. He goes into hysterics, wondering how he could have missed that perfect shot, while, at the same time Suzy is scooping up the pile of snow lying in front of her. Calvin turns in time to see Suzy grinning as she hurls it in his face. The last panel has Calvin lying on the ground ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This means that you can make fun of someone, and make them feel really dumb, which is something that the media loves to do. The T.V. shows "Saturday Night Live", "Friends", "Fraiser", and "The Simpsons" are all perfect examples of irony. "Fraiser" is a show that loves to use the concept of irony to play with the characters of the show, getting them into some precarious situations. Irony in entertainment isn't something new though. In greek tragedies, famous playwrights used irony to entertain audiences for years. Sophicles used irony in one of his most famous plays, "Oedipus" where a young couple, who were King and Queen of a land, were told by a prophecy that their son would kill the father. Frightened by this knowledge, they took their son and chained him to a mountain far away. A shepherd found the boy and raised him as his own. The boy grew to become a man, and, while walking on a path, was told to move so that a royal coach may pass. He didn't want to move and ended up killing all of the guards and the king himself. He then ventured to the next town, which happened to be the city where his parents ruled, and wound up marrying the queen. When they found out what had happened, he took a pin and jabbed out his eyes. The Greeks knew that word as ironia, which is latin. They knew it to mean dissimulation, ignorance purposely affected. • 11. Irony in Pride and Prejudice Irony in Pride and Prejudice Irony forms the alma mater of Jane Austen's novels. Likewise, "Pride and Prejudice" is steeped in irony of theme, situation, character, and narration. Austen uses it to establish the contrast between appearance and reality. As one examines "Pride and Prejudice", one discovers the ironic significance of how pride leads to prejudice and prejudice invites pride. Importantly, the novel elucidates how both "Pride" and "Prejudice" have their corresponding virtues bound up within them: an intricate relationship that is at once contradictory yet deep. This goes in parlance with the critics of Austen who hold that she used irony as a shield to express her radical ideas. It enables her to expose the ills behind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mr. Darcy remarks about Elizabeth that: "tolerable but not handsome enough to tempt me..." We relish the ironical flavour of this statement much later when we reflect that the woman who was not handsome enough to dance with was really good enough for him tomarry. He removes Bingley from Netherfield because he considers it imprudent to forge a marriage alliance with the Bennet Family, but himself ends up marrying the second Bennet sister. Collins proposes to Elizabeth when her heart is full of Wickham and Darcy proposes to her exactly at the moment when she hates him most. Elizabeth tells Mr. Collins that she is not the type to reject the first proposal and accept the second but does exactly this when Darcy proposes a second time. The departure of the militia from Meryton was expected to put an end to Lydia's flirtations. Ironically, it brings about her elopement. The Lydia–Wickham episode may seem like an insurmountable barrier between Elizabeth and Darcy, but is actually instrumental in bringing them together. Lady Catherine, attempting to prevent their marriage only succeeds in hastening it. Irony in character is even more prominent than irony of situation. It is ironical that Elizabeth who prides herself on her perception is quite blinded by her own prejudices and she errs in judging intricate characters. Wickham appears suave and charming but is ... • 13. Irony In Political Irony Irony as a Trap: A Polling Device for Socio–Political Awareness Abstract This text explores how irony functions in the field of art and beyond, driven by the current socio– political situation. The functionality of irony considered as a device is analyzed and tested on/ applied in four different cases while the potential power of a political (de)stabilization of this device is highlighted. The cases are chosen in accordance with the controversial relation between anticipation and contingency, intention and result, whose gap is where irony emerges. Irony is employed as a trap, and such traps as a prism through which to view the present socio–political context. Irony is a cultural– specific issue, thus it cannot not be considered a common universal value. It seems to be an interpretation which is expected to be interpreted. Despite the fact that irony is an authoritarian means, in my perspective, it has the potentiality of self–repression due to the cultural, social and political gaps that reveal following the inconsistency between the ironist intention and the recipient interpretation. Exactly there is where irony's political potential activates. Due to those gaps the power is being agitated and a negotiation of power is generated within a authoritarian ... • 15. The Namesake Irony Quotes Is it ironic that Gogol Ganguli's true good name was lost in the mail? Would the story have progressed in the same pattern? Would the obvious self–identity crisis Gogol faced throughout the novel be present? Would there even be a novel? All these questions focus around the same core: irony. Lahiri capitalizes this literary device to develop the plot of the Namesake. To think that the whole book is rooted in one lost letter is ironic. All the struggles, Gogol undergoes to try to define himself would have been irrelevant if the letter, containing his good name, would have arrived successfully from his Grandmother (Caesar). Additionally, Lahiri delves into irony's literary capabilities to reveal a character's life lessons and perspectives in the four main characters (Gilroy). However, she primarily uses irony to further the theme seed of identity crisis, mainly for the character Gogol. Throughout the novel The Namesake, Lahiri uses irony to illustrate one of the main character's, Gogol, identity crisis in order to show how the discrepancy of conflicting cultures and ideas can impact one's sense of who they are. All of the ironic events in Gogol's life, "things that never should have happened, that seemed out of place and wrong, these were what prevailed, are what endured in the end" (Lahiri 287). Our failures, successes, and heritage are all parts of who we are, not what we are as Gogol has learned. At the end of the day, if you do not love yourself, how can others love ... • 17. Realism: The Ending and Its Irony Irony is common in realist novels that reveal the fall and/or rise of characters among other aspects. It is mostly shown at the end which is usually tragic but tell readers the fate of the characters. Realist novels have plausible events, with cause and effect in their stories – what the characters desire and the consequences they receive because of that. Realism in the novel, The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton, was clearly shown through Lily Bart's character with its ironic ending that had both her fall and rise as a character. She was known for her beauty in the novel; she made various mistakes in the process of entering the high social status. Yes, he could now read into that farewell all that his heart craved to find there; he could even draw from it courage not to accuse himself for having failed to reach the height of his opportunity" (349). Lily's dead body on her bed in the last chapter reminded him of their times together, and reassured him of the love he had for her throughout the story. The readers were focused more on their romantic love and it was ironic that her dead body indicated the love. Her unconsciousness helped Selden declare his love for her in silence. The last lines of the novel were significant to both Selden and Lily as they describe and depict the honest feelings of Selden's character. They were also perhaps the most ambiguous lines of the novel, "He knelt by the bed over her, draining their last moment to its lees; and in the silence there passed between them the word which made all clear" (350). The line "draining their last moment to its lees" suggests that it was their last moment together, but she was not alive. It was his last moment with her, yet he was savoring it as the last loving moment between them. Such a scene can come off as strange but it showed that even with her "unrecognizing face," he still loved her because, "it was her real self" (345). He disregarded her appearance and condition to just stay by her side one last time; it took her dead body for him to realize and reassure his feelings for her. It was her ... • 19. Frankenstein Irony Analysis Ironic Devices Irony is most commonly used in dialogue to express sarcasm and humor, however it can also be applied to add depth to literature. Mary Shelley employs irony in Frankenstein to emphasize the truth and prompt her readers to question pivotal concepts. Her use of irony does not intended for humor, but instead, she utilizes ironic devices to enhance her overall themes and convey the unpredictable consequences of actions. Verbal irony is often confusing, since it expresses a different meaning than what it may seem. Shelley periodically uses verbal irony, and she uses to to convey how language can easily be misinterpreted leading to unexpected consequences. For example, the monster threatens Victor, "I will be with you on your wedding night" (Shelley 123). Considering that the monster is directly speaking to Victor, the use of the word "you" is directed at Victor, causing him to believe that he will be attacked. As a result, he anticipates the monster's arrival and tries to prepare for the upcoming threat. Unfortunately, the monster actually implied that he would kill Elizabeth, making Elizabeth the one who will be attacked. Despite Victor's attempt to predict and calculate the monster's actions, he misunderstands the monster's irony, and Elizabeth faces the fatal consequence. The confusion created by verbal irony functions to reveal the monster's unpredictable nature. In addition, the author does not include many clear paradoxes. the monster also reveals a ... • 21. Irony In Desiree's Baby Irony in "Desiree's Baby" Irony in literature adds a certain depth and poignancy which makes reading fiction so engaging. In addition to supplying wordplay and humor, it sometimes plays an integral role in the tone and outcome of a story. Irony is not to be interchangeable with sarcasm, although verbal irony typically employs a sarcastic voice for its message. Sarcasm by definition in Perrine's Literature as "...language one uses to belittle or ridicule another" (Arp 359). Verbal irony is quite different in its definition. Verbal irony, the easiest form to identify, varies slightly. This form simply means that the speaker's intent differs from what he or she says. The other two forms of irony are dramatic irony and situational irony. Dramatic irony is a connection between the reader and the character. While the reader might believe something to be a certain way, the reader knows if the thought is true or false. This technique, as the name would indicate, leads to an element of drama and suspense. Armand burns all of his wife's belongings, including a letter written by his mother that he has never read. Its message reveals that Armand, in fact, is the person carrying the African American heritage. This is a sample of irony of situation, because Armand falsely accuses and banishes Desiree, when he is the one that, under his belief system, should be banished. The story ends there, with the reader drawing back in disbelief in regards to what they have just read. The surprise ending, with the usage of situational irony, shocks the reader. The story starts off with the news of Mr. Mallard's death in a train accident, which was confirmed twice by his friend Richard. This news was hard to deliver to Mrs. Mallard, who "was afflicted with heart trouble". Josephine, Mrs. Mallard's sister was chosen to give the news, which she presented in "veiled hints". Upon hearing the news, Mrs. Mallard "wept at once". She "did not hear the story as many women have heard"; she accepted the fact the Mr. Mallard is dead and headed off to her room. In Mrs. Mallard's room she sat in "a comfortable" armchair, facing the window. This shows that Mrs. Mallard was not feeling "uncomfortable" or "abandoned" by the death of her husband. Through the window Mrs. Mallard sensed "the delicious breath of rain" and saw the "tops of trees quiver with the new spring life". This situation irony states that usually when a woman losses her husband she goes into a state of shock and beats the furniture around instead of thinking that it is "comfortable". One would not look out the window and see "new spring life" upon losing a loved one but instead close the window and sit in the dark. • 33. Children and Irony Essay Children and Irony Irony is, among many other reasons, problematic in the sense that it is both hard to define as well as sometimes hard to understand. Even the most critical and experienced of readers have missed instances of irony at times, and even more so ordinary readers. Furthermore, traditional conceptions of irony almost always talk about the "ignorant" audience that fails to detect the irony alongside the "knowing" audience that does detect it. These conceptions generally take a hierarchical view with regards to irony, commonly regarding those that fail to "get" the irony as being uneducated or ignorant (Hutcheon, 94). Interestingly however, these conceptions are almost always discussed with the idea that the audience (or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Firstly, it assumes that children are necessarily less complex than adults in their communicative ability. Secondly, it holds true to the notion that those who fail to understand irony are inferior and less sophisticated. Combining the two assumptions, the logic is that because children are necessarily less complex and sophisticated than adults, and because those who cannot "get" irony are also less sophisticated beings, it then follows that children, being less sophisticated, therefore cannot "get" irony as well. It is an insidious line of logic and problematic at best, because it fixes children (and those who don't get irony) immovably as being inferior by labeling them as such without any explanation and justification. Such rigid labeling also causes the logic to breakdown when it fails to address the issue of transition from childhood to adulthood. If children are necessarily inferior and adults superior, how do children automatically lose their inferiority when they grow up? Given the problems and injustices of following such an approach, one would do well to begin by establishing a viable alternative to the elitist notion of irony and consequently open the door towards bringing children to a more equitable position with respect to understanding irony. In dealing with the elitist notion of irony, it would be best to draw upon Hutcheon as she deals with this view in her work by offering a non–hierarchical alternative. In Irony's ... Invisible Man Irony Irony Irony is the use of words to express something different and often opposite to its literal meaning and it is a device that plays a major role in revealing the theme of a literary work. In Inferno, written by Niven and Pournelle, the main character, Allan Carpentier, travels into the depths of hell and finally escapes when he realizes who he is. Throughout his journey, the other people in hell do not want to accept that they are there, which in turn, is the reason they cannot leave hell. Barbee was blind" (133). It is ironic that a blind man is giving the narrator hope about the college when he himself cannot see it. The narrator is letting himself be deceived because he does not see the ironies he faces at the college. Through the individuals and experiences at the college, Ellison conveys his theme of invisibility. On the bus to New York, Ellison deliberately reintroduces the vet into the novel. The vet has given the narrator useful advice about life. On the bus the vet tells the narrator, "Come out of the fog" (153). He tells the narrator to stop looking for acceptance from other people or institutions, and to find acceptance within himself. In New York the narrator truly thinks Bledsoe tries to get him a job. At the narrator's last interview, young Emerson, a businessman, realizes the ambition that the narrator has and comments, "Ambition is a wonderful force, but sometimes it can be blinding." (184). The narrator of the story, Larry, is young and says things that are often very ironic but seem normal to him, such as "do you think if I prayed hard God would send Daddy back to the war?" (O'Connor 66). This example of verbal irony is very humorous, as many pray to have their loved ones sent back to them, not away from them. With such a peculiar perspective of war that only a young person could have, the reader is drawn in further to the story. Another example of irony creating humor occurs when Larry is quite upset that he has to stay quiet while his father is sleeping. He is disturbed deeply by the notion of being quiet when he wants to talk and thinks to himself "whose house was it, anyway?" (O'Connor 68). Although this is a serious comment to a young child like Larry who simply doesn't know it sounds funny, it is very humorous to older people who know that he doesn't own the house, his parents do. He is presented to the reader as a fireman; however, the descriptions of Montag's actions are misleading–making one believe he is a pyromaniac. Statistically speaking, various readers would share the same view if they analyze Guy Montag's word choice when describing the action of burning. The novel contains different types of irony. The literary device irony, is classified in three types: verbal, situational, and dramatic. Situational irony is when what happens is the opposite to what is expected. Fahrenheit 451 has examples of these three types of ironies. Books such as: Frankenstein, My Son's Story, Of Mice and Men, and the short story "The Cask of Amontillado," also contain different types of ironies. The first example of an irony in Fahrenheit 451 is shown when Guy Montag is presented to the reader as a fireman who liked to burn. That could be considered a situational irony, and a dramatic irony, because a fireman does not start fires, on the contrary, they put out fires. In the article "Male Medea," Nancy Rabinowitz describes the protagonist as "the transgressive woman, [or man] inside the woman's body, and her story gives the lie to the gender story––of the woman as victim" (16). Medea, the female protagonist, has the power to control and manipulate any character in the play. This is proven when the Tutor says "Madam, your sons do not have to go into exile; the royal bride gladly took the gifts in her hands; there's peace now, with her and the children" (1001–3). In "Stereotype and Reversal in Euripides' Medea," Shirley A. This is further shown when the Tutor states, "Take heart! You too, will, journey back with children's help" (1015). In this circumstance, the Tutor is declaring how the children will be able to help their mother come back home, yet this is an example of dramatic irony because Medea ultimately kills her children at the end for revenge. Euripides uses dramatic irony to convey Medea's strength and power. The characters mistakenly assume that Medea is weak, yet her will–power and desire for revenge is shown when she kills her sons. Next, Jason is expected to be strong and powerful, yet is weaker than any female. Rabinowitz also speculates that Jason's role has feminine aspects: "Jason would seem to be the perfect example of a woman with a man" (152). For example, Jason exclaims, "I have come, however, to save my children's lives, to keep the king's family from making them pay for the foul murder committed by their mother" (1303–5). Fowler (1994) suggested that Irony "postulates a double audience, consisting of one party that hearing shall hear, and shall not understand, and another party that, when more is meant than meets the ear, is aware both of that more and the outsider's incomprehension". Verschueren (1999) simply defines that irony means what is understood is opposite of what is said. Throughout the years, this idea is a core characteristic found in most linguistic as well as literary work on irony. In his conversations with others, he often "played the fool" to make people present about their knowledge, and then asked questions to expose the weaknesses in their argument. One example of Socratic irony is in Apology – written by Plato. Socrates pretends to be innocent and ignorant to reveal that his accusers cannot persuade him of anything although they claimed that they are really talented at it. Situational irony is a different type of irony that refers to what happens is completely different from what is expected. In contrast to Socratic irony which is usually found in academia, situational irony is usually encountered in daily life. Some examples of this might be the image of a fire station burning down or posting on Facebook complaining how useless Facebook is. Dramatic irony is the irony happens when the audiences know significant information that key characters do not. Thus, this type of irony is attainable in the world of arts, such as poems, plays or novel. Quite a few illustrations about dramatic irony could be found in Shakespeare's work. For instance, in the famous play Romeo and Juliet, the audience know that Juliet is still alive, yet Romeo thinks that she has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. Irony in "The Story of an Hour" Irony in Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" "The story of an hour" by Kate Chopin is described as a story of great irony having many unexpected twists and turns. Situational and dramatic irony is used throughout the story. This is a story of a woman who finds out her husband's death in a train accident and reacts with sadness in the beginning, but then realizes a freedom and relief from her repressive life. She experiences a complete joy over the death of her husband and dies from the shock of discovering that he is still alive. The first type of irony encountered is a situational irony, where there is a contrast between what is expected to happen and what actually happens. Mrs. Mallard's discovery of her lost freedom and regaining her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mallard "and referred to as "she" for most of the narrative. Only when Louise has become "free body, free soul!" , she is addressed directly in the text by he own name. Regardless of the love and care she has for her husband, the problem she sees is the unequal relationship in which one individual exercises his powerful will on the other. This is the reason that she is now regaining her freedom. It seems from the description that Mrs. Mallard has been trapped in this marriage for a long and she wants independence from her unhappy marriage. Hence, Chopin uses irony in the story to show the unequal relationship in late 1800's. In the story, the label that Chopin gives to Mrs. Mallard's problem is "heart trouble' which involves both physical and emotional factors. Similarly, I think it's very ironic for the writer to use the phrase "joy that kills" in the last sentence of the story because it is actual joy that Mrs. Mallard feels when she realizes her husband is dead, and pain so great that kills her when she sees her husband walking through the door. However, other characters are unaware of the transformation that has occurred in Mrs. Mallard. The dramatic irony in the end is that Louise doesn't die because of joy as the doctor claims but actually because of loss of joy. Her husband's death gives her a glimpse of new life and when that new life is swiftly taken away, the shock and disappointment kills her. Therefore, the main character, Mrs. Mallard ... • 59. Irony in Literature Irony and satire are probably most usually met means of expressing humour in literary works. Both of these means can be similar and very different at the same time. In some cases irony and satire can be used as synonyms. Both satire and irony can be found in literature, television, movies, theatre and even in artwork. Satire, however, is a genre, whereas irony is a technique. Irony Irony and humour are closely related. This relation can be seen with dictionary definition. Oxford English dictionary defines irony as "1. the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect: 'Don't go overboard with the gratitude,' he re–joined with heavy irony; 1.1 a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often wryly amusing as a result: the irony is that I ... Authors can use irony to make their audience stop and think about what has just been said, or to emphasize a central idea. Verbal, dramatic, and situational irony are often used for emphasis in the assertion of a truth. There are several types of irony in literature. Three main types are verbal irony, dramatic irony, and situational irony. Verbal irony – the contrast between what is being said and what is meant. E.g. soft like a brick; clean like dirt. Dramatic irony – the contrast between what the character thinks to be true and what the reader knows to be true. In some literary fiction the reader is revealed more information than the character. In that case reader gets to see the character's reaction when they discover the truth. She is overloaded with joy just to find out he is not actually dead and she dies of disappointment. the two types of irony I found were situational and dramatic. I will show u them in this essay The first type of irony is situational. What happened is that when her husband died she was happy when we expected her to be sad. The irony was used very well and played a big part in the story. it was very important because she was in an arranged marriage because this was written in 1800' if it wasn't used it could drastically change the story. • 63. Examples Of Irony In 1984 Examples of Irony in 1984 In the novel 1984, irony is used by George Orwell to bring attention to the corrupt totalitarian society and brainwashing of the public by the books evil political group known as "The Party". Irony is a style of writing in which there is a noticeable difference between what is said and the intended meaning. Verbal irony is used in the book when the Party's three slogans are first mentioned. "WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH" (4, Orwell). "War is Peace" is said while the country is constantly in a state of war, this is ironic because although the country is at combat this is maintaining peace among the public by distracting it from the corrupt political atmosphere around them. "Freedom is Slavery" is ironic because the outer party is enslaved to the government while the inner party leaders have total freedom because of the people's lack of power. Lastly, "Ignorance is Strength" because the obliviousness of the public provides more control to the party leaders because the nation is unaware of what is truly happening. These slogans are not only ironic but examples of an oxymoron because the statements are contradictory. This is one of the many examples of the irony in the novel. With the use of ... After they have defeated Mycetes, Tamburlaine challenges Cosroe. The newly crowned king of Persia responds: "What means this devilish shepherd to aspire With such a giantly presumption, To cast up hills against the face of heaven, And dare the force of angry Jupiter? But as he thrust them underneath the hills, And pressed out fire from their burning jaws, So will I send this monstrous slave to hell, Where flames shall ever feed upon his soul." And such are objects fit for Tamburlaine, Wherein, as in a mirror, may be seen His honor, that consists in shedding blood When men presume to manage arms with him." (p.28) Tamburlaine says that the deaths of Zabina and Bajazeth are mirrors that reflect his honour, much to his please. Their deaths reflect more honour on themselves than on Tamburlaine. Earlier in Act V, Tamburlaine, when attacking a city, has ordered the deaths of four virgins sent to him to plead for Damascus. This is his habit to give a city that he attacks two days to decide to surrender. On the third day, if no surrender is coming, he destroys the city. On the third day of the siege of Damascus, the four virgins are sent out in hopes that their innocence can persuade Tamburlaine to spare the city. He asks them what they see on the point of his sword and, when they answer that they see fear and steel, Tamburlaine says, "Your fearful minds are thick and misty then, For there sit Death; there sits imperious Death, Keeping his circuit by the slicing edge. This use of irony has a profound effect on the readers experience allowing them to better connect with the characters Situational irony is when you expect one thing to happen and something else happens instead. I found a case of this irony in The Necklace. All Mrs. Loisel wanted to be was rich, but when she lost the necklace, she borrowed money and bought a real one. Resulting in her being very poor and so deep in debt it will take 10 years to pay off. If Mrs. Loisel told her friend about the necklace she would not have to do anything because the original was a fake. The situational ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Irony : The Metamorphosis The Irony: The Metamorphosis A strongminded man who has everything going for him, nice job nice car, great friends, etc. comes home every night to a sick mother whom he takes care of after a long day of living a lavish life. His one weakness is his sick mother because she taught him everything. No one, not even his best friend knows about his other life and so that 's how he keeps it. Oh the irony right? Big strong man afraid to live his truth in fear of change and facing his reality. Stress as defined by Merriam–Webster states that stress is "a force exerted when one body or body part presses on, pulls on, pushes against, or tends to compress or twist another body or body part,." I believe that in Gregors situation his transformation as a whole brought stress on his body, mind, and spirit. On his body obviously, was the most to be affected by stress. Trying to adjust with such a body when ones never experienced such a thing can be a challenging thing. "He was laying on his hard armor–plated back and when he lifted his head a little he could see his domelike brown belly divided into bow–shaped ridges..." (p. 494). Waking up from your sleep and seeing a monstrous body instead of your own can cause a word wind of stress. The body changes that occurred caused a lot of stress on Gregors family as well. His mother especially was very shocked to see him transform from man to bug overnight. Watching him hang from the wall caused her anxiety and she fainted. It's ironic that she fainted because she knew of his extra extremities and his huge hard back, but still the sight freaked her out. Gregor also identified his Suarez 3 bosses office boy as a creature saying, "the office boy was the bosses own creature, without backbone or brains"(pg. 496). • 71. Irony As A Trap Essay Irony as a Trap: A Polling Device for Socio–Political Awareness Abstract This text explores how irony functions in the field of art and beyond, driven by and based on the current socio–political situation. Introduction Working as a Greek artist during a period of heightened ... As Pills and Gallia Kollectiv write: " Ironic distance is ambiguous. It grounds both critique and detached resignation to the status quo." 25 Their opinion about those practises is that the way in which irony is used in contemporary art: through imitation, identification and exaggeration, the participants [...] do not attempt to make themselves different, to demonstrate their uniqueness and their resistance to social norms. They wish, on the contrary, to get as close as possible to the image of the other, to become one with the image of 'normalising' institutions." 26 In that case this image could be just one more representational form of political art. 27 Having this as strategy is it possible to make a critic, to preach to the converted? Although the same Kollective supports overidentification as a political form of resistance, they find necessary to redefine the way irony used in overidentification and to expand the term overidentification beyond art. They consider overidentification as "a special case of irony that retains a critical potential." ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Situational Irony In Dracula Despite seemingly unimportant to a novel, irony plays a crucial role in Dracula. This particular novel, however, takes irony a step further and some pieces of irony can even be analyzed so as to be justified through the Victorian values of the respective time period. Although this particular novel was first written and released in 1897, which was a prominently Victorian era and period of history, Dracula has managed to retain its prominence, popularity, and glory over the years. Likewise, the novel has also exponentially grown upon this prominence as well. The most popular example of this would be with similar modern–day adaptations of the novel, namely the Twilight series. Dracula, despite being written so long ago, has also managed to include ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One explicit example of situational irony would undeniably be when Lucy is in the process of recovery. Lucy's mother, rather unexpectedly, ends up removing the garlic flowers and ultimately spoiling the recovery process. "I feared the heavy odour would be too much for the dear child...so I took them all away and opened a bit of the window to let in a little fresh air" (Stoker 129). The situational irony in this quote is that Van Helsing had never expected Lucy's mother to be the one individual who essentially ended up sealing Lucy's fate, as she was left defenseless without the garlic flowers in the room and the window was left wide open for Count Dracula to enter and attack Lucy. One more example of situational irony would be in regards with the importance of Mina to her male counterparts, as she is heavily undermined and judged throughout the entirety of the novel primarily and solely due to her gender. "Ah, that wonderful Madam Mina! She has man's brain...and a woman's heart" (335). Despite being undermined constantly, however, Mina effectively continues about the miniscule amount of tasks she is entrusted with. Eventually, Mina is granted with the ability to come along with her male counterparts, for instance when they are tracking Dracula down, and be fully involved in conversations regarding ... • 77. Irony in Antigone Irony in Antigone When one begins to read Antigone, they may find it very easy to recognize the use of irony throughout the work. The author, Sophocles, was known to work his plots into lines in which tragic irony would occur over and over. He would then bring lines that had been spoken previously in a play in later to form a climax of the drama (Johns). Sophocles used "tragic irony" often in Antigone, along with other plays that he has written. "'Tragic irony' whereby a character's words carry a deeper and more sinister meaning for the audience than the character speaking them intends to impart (Dawe)." Not only does he use tragic irony, but he also uses verbal irony and even some situational irony all throughout Antigone. Creon is a character known throughout the play to display a large number of verbal irony. Irony begins working its way into the play at the very beginning of the play, during the prologue. During the prologue of the play Antigone is with her sister, Ismene. While with her, she begins to beg Ismene to help her go against the new law set by Creon, find her brother Polyneices' body and bury him properly. Antigone believes that Polyneices deserves a proper burial just as their brother Eteocles received after his death. Antigone shows verbal irony while trying to persuade her sister to help her by calling Creon "good Creon" when she says, "that is what they say, and our good Creon is coming here/To announce it publicly; and the penalty–/Stoning to death in ...
