2. Legal Issues Discussed
A child’s identity must be protected
• Information that helps someone identify a
student should always be shared with care
(student photos, student videos, home address,
contact numbers, etc.)
• Students and parents are entitled to privacy in
terms of academic report cards, progress
reports, etc- anywhere a grade posting can be
found.
3. • Find out about your school, district and Education Department guidelines for
sharing student photographs online– follow them!
• Find out if there are forms caregivers and students need to sign to consent to use
of student photos online — make sure you have all forms signed by parents or
caregivers.
• Respect the wishes of caregivers and students while understanding consent to use
photos can be withdrawn at any time.
*Remember it isn’t impossible to stop parents, students and caregivers from
downloading photos and sharing them on their social networks, even if you are using
a private blog. If you don’t want a photo shared on a social network then don’t
upload the photo!!!

4. A Summary Of Our Advice:
• Avoid the use of any photos that can identify
individual students.
• Don’t use student photos for their avatars if partaking
in an online learning environment.
• If you do use any photos of students – don’t use their
name in the file name and don’t refer to the student
by name, even their first name, in the caption under
the photo or in the post.
5. Do and Don’t Example
This picture is an example of a “do” incorporate on your teacher
website. Featuring the backs of your students is a great way to avoid
personal student identity.
6. Do and Don’t Example
This picture is an example of a “DON’T”
post on your teacher website. This
contains both children's’ face/profile
which makes it very easy to identify who
they are. In addition, the caption
provides each childs’ name, which again
is a big NO-NO!

7. Password Protection
Why is it important?
• Allows the teacher to control who has access to each specific
page in the website.
• Legally as a teacher you are now safe because you have
prevented any outsides (internet predators, etc) from viewing
the content on each individual page in your website.
• By password protecting each child’s grade book, you ensure the
student and parent the child’s privacy by creating one specific
unique password per student. No other parents can access your
child’s information.
8. Member Site Login
Why is it important?
• Allows teachers to control and continue to monitor who has
access to their website- who logs into their website, what page
they browsed, and the duration spent on the webpage.
• Ensures that only the parents of the children in the class are
accessing the website and each individual page in the website by
entering in BOTH a login name and the password provided.
