  • Hi I’m Shelby Vasta, and I’m going to tell you about cyber-bullying and the many effects of this harmful cause.
  • Cyber-bullying is when one child targets another child using harmful tactics. This can include many thing such as text message, games, websites and playground harassment. It is a serious cause that has been going on for years with kids of all ages.
  • Cyber bullying is indeed happening everywhere! Statistics state that 4 out of 5 middle school students have been in bullying behavior the last 30 days. Parents today are being more informed about the problems and issues of cyber-bulling and how it may be effecting their child or how they can tell their children to help stop it.
  • In cyber bulling there are two types that can happen one being direct attack which is when it comes from the person such as a text message, stealing passwords, blogs, websites and sending pictures. The other kind is Cyber bullying by proxy which is when you have someone else do the harmful deed to the harmless child. It is always not just one person it can be a group of people going back and forth that may cause harassment behavior. Kids are getting tormented , teased harassed and put down for something that haven't done.
  • These two pictures demonstrate two types of cyber bulling the picture on the left of the kids pillow fighting is a example of harassment and the on the right is an example of cyber bulling creating a website or nasty messages to another child.
  • Some examples of cyber bulling are: 7 students get suspended for posting a picture of one of their classmates being killed by a machine. The next example is of two students who make a wesite about another student called “Kill Kylie Incorporated” making threats and homophobic comments. The last example is of a 13 year old classmate who was sent instant messages calling him gay and he was taunted and teased and in 2003 he took his own life.
  • There has been a major impact on k-12 education with the effects of cyber bullying. The students being bullied have showed many emotions to help hide or shelter themselves from this abuse they show fear, being scared and embarrassed. Concentration for the victims in school is not easy for them they constantly are not paying attention and have poor grades in their classes. They also have low attendence which can potetnially hurt them in the long run.
  • These pictures are also a few representation of cyber bulling in classrooms and through text massages which can be one click away!
  • The future plans with helping children with cyber bullying is that teachers have started to make lessons plans dealing with this issue. For example Students examine face-to-face bullying behaviors and identify why these behaviors create problems. They role-play to find ways to resolve the problem and create a poster of “No Bullying” rules. In time things like this will help with school violence, cyber security and behavioral changes within students.
  • How is cyber bullying is being handled in a very supportive and active way! A bill was passed in 2002 for all schools to get and anti-bullying policy. They are also staring to give parents information online and cell phone harassment and what to do about it. In the bill 5288 states that: “An intentional written, verbal, or physical act against a student which is motivated by the bully’s perception of that student’s race, color, or creed, gender, sexual orientation, or other distinguishing characteristics… When the intentional act physically harms a student or damages his/her property; substantially interferes with the student’s education; is so severe, persistent or pervasive that it creates an intimidating or threatening educational environment; or substantially disrupts the orderly operation of a school.”
  • In conclusion cyber bullying needs to be stopped, it interferes with education and the well being of students lives no child should feel unsafe in school or their own house, this is why parents really need to get involved not only for the child's sake but their sake as well there is way to many consequences that come with cyber bullying and no one should have to be the vicim of it! Thank you.
