1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and
conventions of real media
products?
2. Typical conventions of a music
magazine front cover:
* Bold masthead
* Cover model of a solo artist or
band/band member
* Sell lines surrounding cover image
* Some have a slogan
* Barcode
3. Typical conventions of a
contents page:
* Information arranged in columns
* Contents labelled at the top of the
page
* Images
* Editors letter – with the editors
signature
* One or two pages long
* Subscription information
* Contact information
4. Typical conventions of a double
page spread:
* Image/images of person the article is
about
* Text arranged in columns
* Quotes from the interview on the
images
* If the piece is an interview then the
questions tend to be bold
5. Conventions I followed on
the front cover:
* I have used a bold masthead
* The cover model is a
member of a band
* There are sell lines
* I decided I would use a
slogan
* I have put a barcode on
the front
6. Conventions I followed on
the contents page:
* Contents is labelled at the top of the
page
* An image has been used
* I included an editors
letter with a ‘signature’ of
the editor
* It is one page long
7. Conventions I followed on
the double page spread:
* Images of the person being
interviewed have been
included
* Text is laid out in
columns
* There is a quote
on one of the
images
* The questions for the
interview are in bold
8. Conventions I challenged:
I did not challenge many conventions on my front
cover except I did however choose to feature a
female on the front – despite the majority of the
alternative genre being male.
As for my contents page I did not include any images
of my front cover model even though I know that is
quite common and I also did not include any
subscription or contact information (that
information is identified as being located further on
in the magazine). My reason for this is simply
because their was a lack of space on the one page
and did not want my contents to run across two
pages.
9. Cover model:
Her facial expression is very serious and
moody which is typical of
people of that genre.
Her clothing also fits with the
genre as it is laid back but
edgy.
10. In conclusion...
I have largely stuck to the conventions
of music magazines with my front
cover, contents page and double
page spread but I have however
challenged some conventions due to
lack of space or to keep with the edgy
theme of my chosen genre of
alternative rock
