1. What steps has JetBlue taken to manage a diverse workforce?
How does it help in managing the workforce?
Answer:
JetBlue pursued diversity at all levels. The company encourages
generational, cultural and gender diversity. The company
established a culture that valued differences and respected all
employees. The management promoted a culture of inclusion
that fostered a sense of belonging. In an attempt to keep
employees happy, excited about work and aware of diversity,
the company also started training for unconscious bias.
2. What are the different definitions of diversity and diversity
inclusion as seen in the video?
Answer:
The video asserts that diversity and diversity inclusion does not
concern itself with perceived power but rather tries to create an
open culture about the different people that work and interact
within an organization. Diversity inclusion is about giving
diverse employees an opportunity to understand unconscious
bias and getting employees to work and interact professionally
with fellow employees and with travelers. Diversity and
inclusion is not about hiring people based on likes or
preferences. Diversity and diversity inclusion is not about racial
undertones, power or stereotypes. diversity is having different
and open views about culture and diversity to support a culture
of inclusion.
3. List the different protected groups that are targeted by
JetBlue.
Answer:
The company protects the veterans, LGBT Communities,
professional women in the workplaces, children and families
with disabilities and the minority populations such as the
Latino’s. To protect these groups, the company has instituted a
number of resource groups such as Crewmember Resource
Groups, Vets in Blue, Blue Conexion, Latino Crewmembers,
Reach Blue Heights.
4. One might agree that diversity plays an important role at a
workplace. However, by including different diversity programs,
is JetBlue paying the right amount of attention toward the issue
or are they going overboard?
Answer:
Yes, JetBlue is demonstrating the right commitment and paying
the right amount of attention toward diversity. For instance, the
company promotes a culture of creativity, innovation and
problem solving. This is achieved through diversity training
especially about the nature and danger of unconscious bias.
5. In your opinion, should all companies have diversity policies
like those of JetBlue?
Answer:
No. Although all companies should have diversity policies,
copying those used by JetBlue would not be effective. It would
be better to develop company-specific creative strategies to
enhancing diversity and culture of inclusion.
