How Gansey Is Not Hiding Out At 300 Fox Way
Gansey was absolutely not hiding out at 300 Fox Way, no matter what the psychics insisted.
"So, you just going to keep sitting there all night?" Orla asked as she admired her newly–painted red
nails. "Blue won't be back until ten."
"I know," Gansey said. He's been there when she's left at two. It was now three. "Am I in the way?"
"Not really," Orla said, but one of her eyebrows was slowly rising. She looked curious. Or hungry.
Calla swept into the kitchen, her purple shaw billowing out behind her. She looked very much the
seer today."Orla, leave the poor boy alone. Can't you see he's suffering from a broken heart?" she
said dramatically, like she was reading from a script.
"I'm good with broken hearts," Orla said at the same time as Gansey ... Show more content on

I'm happy for them. They'll be good together." And it was the truth. Gansey had been caught off
guard initially, but in hindsight, it seemed inevitable. Ronan and Adam smoothed out each other's
rough patches, for the most part. They were stronger together. And there was a lot less fighting in
Monomouth overall (but more odd noises in the middle of the night).
"You didn't let me finish! You're unhappy about Ronan and Adam's new relationship because you
feel left out."
Gansey bristled. "Well, my best friends got together. It's natural to feel excluded. They have less
time to do the things we used to. But I'll acclimate."
"'I'll acclimate,'" Calla mocked with a snort thrown in for good measure. "That's not what I meant."
Gansey frowned. What did she– Oh. OH. "No! It's not–"
"It so is. You can't hide emotion that strong from us. Even Orla could probably pick up on it."
"You're mistaken." Gansey stood and was out the front door before Calla could throw another word
at him.

Pierce's Landing Research Paper
Pierce's Landing is three hundred acres of land that goes back six generations. Its been a successful
cattle farm since the very beginning. Pierce's Landing is at the core of the legacy that is the Pierce
surname in Hope. Now that's a shit tonne of pressure and expectations resting on my shoulders.
Laying my surf board down on the sand, I shake my hair out cursing myself for forgetting my towel.
The damn solicitor's voice from yesterday keeps repeating itself in my head, 'Pierce's Landing
including all equipment, vehicles and dwellings will be left to one Mr Jacob Cole Pierce'. That
statement shouldn't shock me. I mean it's been a family tradition that the land has always been past

Maybe its because it makes it real. In only a few short months, it's just going to be me. All decisions
and the future of Pierce's Landing with fall down to me and me alone. I haven't even given any
thought to what this means for my career as a bull rider. I mean, sure, many of the guys on the
circuit have land and some even have families that they go home to after all obligations of a show
are finished. But the rest of us like to play nomads, choosing to sleep many of nights in our swags as
we travel the back roads, exploring new towns. Just us and our utes. I always assumed by the time
this land would become mine, I'd be done with travelling the backroads and jumping on bulls. That
I'd be ready to settle down. Sitting on my board with my feet in the sand, I look out at the ocean and
take in the smell of the salty air that has always reminded me of home. What I'd do to have Pops

The Beach Crim Research Paper
The Beach Crim
There was a cool breeze coming from the Lake, the waves were rolling into shore and nothing else
but the midnight silence, also the two bangs that brighten the whole beach. There was a car parked
on the right side of the tower house at the very edge of the beach, where the parking lot started.
There was a Tower house keeper who said he was suspicious of gunshots he had heard and he called
911, like someone would do if they heard a gunshot at this time of night. There was also another
witness at the scene a homeless man who used a payphone to call in the gunshots he had heard. The
pay phone was at the far side of the beach about 100 yards from the Tower House.
When the Ambulance and the Policies officers arrived it was a very dark and cold night. Everybody

My First Love Essay
Everyone loves to tell the story of their first love, and the beautiful lesson they learned through the
adventure. You hear the phrase, "you'll never forget your first" as you see a small smirk flourish
across the faces of people who remember their story. Through all the experiences shared, I never
would have believed the result of falling out of love. All of the novels and sweet smiles never hinted
about the time I would end up crumbled down on my bedroom's floor, with two years of a person's
presence surrounding a broken heart. Nobody will speak of watching your first love leave for
college, knowing that they will want to move on. I went through the stages of heartbreak that left me
with a cracked and bruised heart. The recovery and journey of finding acceptance and love for
myself, created a book of my personal lessons. Going back to that summer is like reading the final
book of your favorite series, you soak in the words trying to read slow, savoring. Completing the
series leaves a bitter sweet moment, comparing to the emotions that overcame my mind through the
process of watching him go. However, it was not beautiful and bittersweet as romance novels paint
your first love out to be. Each page in our novel transformed from love to a war zone, as loyalty
became nonexistent, and trust only present in waves. The summer was beautiful, but in my heart I
knew that this novel was only a fairy tale coming to it's end. There was nothing left to be painted.

BHP Billiton 's Samarco iron ore joint venture is a $7 billion settlement with the Brazilian

Billiton's companies are still under negotiation, although, ABC has stated that the Samaraco
company would be given up to 10 years to pay the 20 billion reais debt. The mine waste flooded
through a small town of 650 people. The mine also disturbed more than a dozen riverside towns
along Atlantic Ocean 500 kilometres downstream. The minimum of 17 people died around the Bento

Rite Of Initiation In Araby By James Joyce
Rite of Initiation
Rite of initiation, sounds like something frightening, but in literature a rite or story of initiation does
not refer precisely to something of terror. The protagonist of "Araby" faces experiences for which
his previous experiences had not prepared him. In this case the main character enters a new stage of
his life (an evolutionary stage), from childhood to adolescence. For this reason, "Araby," by James
Joyce, should be considered a story of initiation.
The protagonist, and at the same time the narrator of this story is a child that all the experiences he
has had are based on school and play with his friends. He lives in a small, quiet neighborhood,
where day to day life is monotonous. However, the protagonist loses interest in the games, since
something else catches his attention: the sister of his friend Mangan. This boy spends hours looking
at this girl and does not understand the sensations and feelings that she causes, feelings that come to
his life for the first time to make him discover "love."
The protagonist has not lived before a similar situation since it is the first time that falls in love. This
first experience represents a discovery. This child does not understand the feelings discovered and
the state in which he is. "(...) I myself did not understand (...) I thought little of the future. I did not
know whether I would ever speak to her or not or, if I spoke to her, how I could tell her of my
confused adoration" (par. 5). The protagonist

Analysis Of Man In The Mirror
"Man in the Mirror" is about a man who believes that only by changing himself will he be able to
change the world. The main focus of the song is a man's struggle to improve himself morally after
witnessing his inability to impact the lives of those in need. Michael Jackson reflects on how the
world around him is suffering while he lives a life of comfort, and the guilt triggers his decision to
change himself so that he can eventually help the world. . The song raises up questions such
as,"What purpose does an individual serve in a community? How can we bring about positive
changes to the world? How can one person make a major impact in the world? "Man in the Mirror"
sends a very universal message, basically telling the world to improve themselves individually so
that the whole improves as a result. The discussion will focus more on the symbolical lyrics because
there is a lot of straightforward vocabulary in each verse.
In the first verse, Michael uses a winter coat and cold weather to give an example of the trying times
that some people undergo. First he mentions the coat he wears to protect himself from the chilly
weather "As I turned up the collar on my favourite winter coat." Despite wearing the coat, Michael
states that the wind still got to his head "This wind is blowin' my mind." This personification of the
wind is used to illustrate how Michael escaped the physical affects of the cold but not the mental
effects. The reason why it affected him mentally is because of what follows, which is the sight of
"kids in the street, with not enough to eat". Michael feels sorry for the kids suffering in the street
because he has the resources to survive and they don't. He states that the coat is his favorite,
meaning he has multiple coats. The difference between him and the struggling children becomes
even more apparent when the audience realizes that Michael is rich and that he has probably never
suffered like the kids. He then questions himself saying: "who am I, to be blind?" In this case
"blind" is used as a metaphor to show how much neglect the kids have been receiving from him as
an individual. Although the kids are there struggling, Michael is probably too caught up in his own
world to acknowledge their

Comparing Short Stories 'Broken Chain And Fish Cheeks'
Belonging Paper Josh 2–9–18 Have you ever struggled with how you look to others? In the two
short stories "Broken Chain" and "Fish Cheeks", a teenage boy and girl respectively struggle with
this very issue. Both essays relate different stories but common themes. "Broken Chain" depicts a
teenager who spends nearly all his time focusing on how he looks, only to find that he never needed
to in the first place. "Fish Cheeks" describes a Chinese girl who longs to be American on the outside
and is embarrassed of her culture. The two short stories have a valuable lesson for teenagers for how
you look on the inside. In "Broken Chain," the story focuses on Alfonso, the main character, who

He asks her to go bike riding but just before he leaves his bike chain breaks. However, at the last
minute his brother shows up and lets him ride his bike. Sandra is happy to ride on the handlebars
with Alfonso. In "Fish Cheeks" the main character and author, Amy Tan, wants to change her
physical appearance to impress the minister's son. When she invites the minister's family to
Christmas dinner, she is embarrassed by her family's food and traditions. For example, her family
did not pass food, but they grabbed whatever they wanted from across the table. The fish they served
was unAmerican and grotesque. After everyone leaves, her mother tells her that, "Your only shame
is to know shame." In "Fish Cheeks", the writer conveys you should be proud of your heritage and
culture, and this is what connects you with others. The common theme of both stories is that
appearance or looking "good" isn't everything when it comes to connecting with someone.
Sometimes your connection comes with appreciating both similarities and differences. "Broken
Chain" and "Fish Cheeks" address a common theme of belonging by showcasing the emotions,
thoughts, and actions of the main

How Can Communicable Diseases Be Broken At A Link Within The Communicable Disease Chain?
The objective of this study is to answer how communicable diseases can be broken at a link within
the communicable disease chain and to answer whether there are steps nurses can take to facilitate
this process. This work will provide a specific example.
According to a report published by John Hopkins University the major cause of deaths in emergency
and post–conflict situations are those caused by outbreaks of disease. These outbreaks are reported
to raise baseline death rates "sixty times." ( ) The primary killers in complex emergencies over the
past ten years are reported as "malaria, diarrhoeal diseases, and pneumonia with TB and HIV/AIDS
gaining increasing attention more recently." ( ) It is additionally reported that more than 40% of
deaths during the acute emergency stage in camp situations result from diarrhoeal diseases and that
80% of these are among children less than two years of age.
John Hopkins University additionally reported that it is possible to minimize disease outbreaks and
deaths during natural disasters and emergencies of a complex nature through "introduction of
disease surveillance, epidemic preparedness, effective prevention, and control including case
management." ( ) Failure to implement well coordinated response that is both "timely and effective"
is likely to result in such as the "re–emergence of old disease threats" as well as "outbreaks of

Analysis Of The Book ' The Night '
She was alone. Wanda leant against the massive mural wall beside her while her eyes were closed.
Not like she wanted to sleep; she just felt bored, and she had no faintest idea what to do while
anticipating for her uncle to pick her up from school. The sky was limpid that day, and the sun shone
directly toward her, and Wanda felt like hell. She doesn't have any place to be since that day was the
construction's day on the nearby road in front of the school. Therefore, no student allowed running
across or waiting close to the road while the construction happened. Wanda had no choice but sat on
the dusty floor while the thick chemistry book set under her butt as she used it as her cushion. Not
more than ten minutes later, a sound of footsteps growing near her, triggered Wanda to straight up
her body and peeked behind the wall to find out whose footstep was that. It was Chris. He was
balancing a pile of books in his hand. Most of the books are from the library, and Wanda guessed
that he was searching for more information about what Mr Brown gave them from previous Biology
class about a plant, which she never heard before. Apparently, Chris found it already. "Thank God
you here," he said, tried to balance the book when one of it almost slipped from his hand. "Can you

Personal Narrative : The Life Of My Life
I long to be free. To be free from the metal chains that hold me down. To be free from the
whispering as I descend into my empty slumber. My heart couldn't handle the pain of the immortal
whispers and figures that popped up here and there trying to help or drag me with them. My day
begins again with a drone of the same ringtone of the alarm. Getting up to open the window
forgetting about the same old raven bird that stares at me with its whole black eyes sending you into
a black spiral. The sense of nostalgia hits, rain leaves its own scent like the scent of an ex–lover's.
After all eternity doesn't wait for the past to catch up, you just keep on going with your life as I
have. Making my way to the kitchen I avoid all the papers on the floor scattered like a tornado threw
up and shredded its life. My hands twitches to grab the phone eager to check for the ghost messages
and calls. Putting down my arm as soons as it raises "don't do it". I turn in circles to find someone
but in its leave was nothing. " I know" I whispered to no one. The hallway was filled with darkness
except for one room whose light was slowly dimming. Darting past the shadowed hands reaching
for me I went into the room. Searching for that dark grey raincoat that was hung up on a hanger in
the half empty closet. Walking down the busy filled street. I felt myself putting my head down as
people continued to walk in the opposite direction. Frosty air breathes against my flushed cheeks. Its

Indirect Characterization From The Short Story 'Broken Chain'
Indirect characterization occurs when the character's personality is revealed through speech, actions,
appearance, etc. An example from the short story "Broken Chain" is "Alfonso sat on the porch trying
to push his crooked teeth to where he thought they belonged." Alfonso's personality was shown
when he done this. All he wanted to do was look handsome, so girls would like him. What he didn't
know was that not all girls are the same. Another example is from the poem "Oranges". It is "A
nickel in my pocket, And when she lifted a chocolate That cost a dime, I didn't say a thing,". This
defines his personality as sweet. Even though he only had a nickel, he still got her the candy that
costed a dime. It helped me understand the poem little better.

Symbolism And Symbolism In Kate Chopin's The Awakening
A key aspect in writing an interesting story is forming symbolism. As the result of symbolism,
readers can dive just a little bit deeper into the meaning and core of the work. Birds are a moderately
frequent emblem, serving as representations of freedom, independence, and not afraid to be loud or
to speak their minds. In Kate Chopin's novella, "The Awakening," birds were used to express Edna's
true feelings and desires, to explain the courage required to defy the standards, and to show Edna's
final defeat. Many animals, especially birds, seem to communicate in a language that only they can
really understand. The novella starts by setting a scene with the description of two birds who do
exactly that. Chopin began by stating, "A green and yellow parrot, which hung in a cage outside the
door, kept repeating over and over: 'Allez vous–en! Allez vous–en! Sapristi! That's all right!' He
could speak a little Spanish, and also a language which nobody understood, unless it was the
mocking–bird that hung on the other side of the door, whistling his fluty notes out upon the breeze
with maddening persistence" (Chopin 1). The green and yellow parrot represented Edna Pontellier.
With only one other being who understands her, she felt as if she was stuck in a golden cage. She
had always had food on her plate and a man who provides a stable income and life for her. The
mocking–bird represented Mademoiselle Reisz, because she is the only other being who understood

Bound Of The Handmaid's Odyssey
The next morning, Ramses woke up feeling refreshed and devoured a meal that'd been left in his
room. When the guards Prince Cyrillus assigned to stalk him like a shadow only fell in place behind
him and didn't try to stop him, Ramses ventured out of his assigned bedchamber and began to
explore Prince Cyrillus' living quarters. Nothing interested him until he found the prince's personal
combat field.
Arranged in rows of twelve, one hundred forty–four vases stood in the middle of several weapon
racks that offered every type of weapon in existence. Seeing the collection of weapons and the
vases, Ramses recalled the days from more than two decades ago, when he'd built a similar
courtyard for his own entertainment and challenged his men into a duels atop of the vases.

Reflection Paper
I used to not think this to be true, but once it happened in my life, I became a strong believer in it. I
would hear, "Sometimes you have to let things go, so there's room for better things to come into
your life." I convinced myself to think that this was just a phrase people told themselves and others
to make one another believe that life would get better. It wasn't until one day that I believed it too.
I was very appreciative for the life I had and the people I had living in it. I had a family to support
and care for me and friends to spend time with. As my friends and I grew older and began maturing,
we began to see the true colors in one another. We had different beliefs and opinions, and faced up
hill battles with one another. Years of a close friendship began to crumble, until it whittled away to
nothing. Years of memories burned away and laughs shared between two people suddenly became
deceiving glares of anger in the halls. Losing the friendship I held with another for nearly four years
was what was the most challenging. Someone who knew everything about you, who knew you
better than you knew yourself, was now just another figure in the crowd. We become so acclimated
with objects once they become a part of our life, that when they're gone we question on how to live
without them. Seeing things reminded me of the bond that wasn't supposed to break, and I wondered
how I would ever lift myself up from the beating I'd just taken.

The Theme Of Love In The Scarlet Ibis By James Hurst
Love is unconditional within a family and should come without seeing any flaws one may have.
Each and every individual is given the ability to love, however not all have the strength and courage
to embrace it. Love is the most important aspect of life, but not all can accept an individual's
differences. James Hurst expresses this hardship in his story "The Scarlet Ibis". Hurst displays the
importance of acceptance between two brothers, Brother and Doodle. Doodle is born with a
disability that sets him apart from other children his age. Brother cannot accept the fact that his little
brother is different, causing him to feel that he needs to make his brother 'normal'. Brother's actions
are driven by pride, ultimately allowing cruelty to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Everyday, Brother takes Doodle to Old Woman Swamp and the same thing happens: he grabs his
little brother, stands him up, then Doodle collapses soon after. Through hard work and perseverance,
Doodle eventually learns to walk on his own. Brother gains confidence in Doodle, and now believes
in his own ability to do nothing wrong. In Old Woman Swamp, Brother also creates a development
program for Doodle. Brother and Doodle's relationship is beginning to flourish, "Doodle and I spent
lots of time thinking about our future. We decided that when we were grown we'd live in Old
Woman Swamp and pick dog–tongue for a living...Mama and Daddy could come and live with us if
they wanted to. He even came up with the idea that he could marry Mama and I could marry Daddy"
(Hurst 4). The daily trips Doodle and Brother take to Old Woman Swamp together slowly strengthen
their bond. The beauty of Old Woman Swamp allows Doodle to imagine a perfect world. His

Themes and Images in The Awakening
"The water of the Gulf stretched out before her, gleaming with the million lights of the sun. The
voice of the sea is seductive, never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the soul to

Details from this novel by Kate Chopin demonstrate how this quote aptly captures the theme and
spirit of The Awakening, as well as the situation of women in the nineteenth century and even today.
First, one most look to the "white beach," Edna has trod on her entire life. This beach is the safe and
sturdy ground that Adele Ratignolle thrives upon. Attired all in white, Madame Ratignolle embodies
the very spirit of the "mother – woman." "They were women who idolized their children, worshiped
their husbands, and esteemed it a holy privilege to efface themselves as individuals and grow wings
as ministering angels." Ch. IV, pg 385. However, on this white beach, where women in white brood
over all, ". . .Edna was not a mother – woman." Ch. IV, pg 385. Rather than dig her toes into the
colorless sands, Edna prefers meandering walks, perhaps on the shoreline itself. The imagery of
Edna walking along as the waters lap at her feet is profound.
Edna is thus far trapped on the ground, not yet knowing how to swim, but wanting desperately to
swim into the boundless water. Therefore, she must be content with life on land, experiencing only a
portion of the fluid as it swirls around her ankles. So Edna marries a man her father approves of, has
children her husband approves of, and mimes a life society approves of. Here and there, the water of
living laps at Edna's feet tempting her to jump in.

Psychopathic And Genetics : A Broken Chain
Psychopathic & Genetics: A Broken Chain
Christian Washington
South University – Richmond Psychopathic & Genetics: A Broken Chain Psychopathy has been a
growing topic in psychology in the past several years. Studies and research wonder what is the cause
for this behavior, how does the disorder develop, and how it is linked through genetics. Since
psychopathy can be linked to genetic traits these individuals are more dangerous compared to those
who are labeled sociopaths. Environmental factors also play a role in the behavior of psychopaths,
but in different ways since antisocial tendencies are developed. But the notion that genes play an
important role are still being widely accepted and continues to the present day to remain a
controversial topic. What is known is the behavior in psychopaths are not just passed down
genetically because socialization is a key aspect for psychopathy development, environmental
factors play a part in psychopathy, and antisocial behavior is an indicator of psychopathic
tendencies. It has been said that psychopaths have been a part of society since the emergence of the
human species. Psychiatrist Adolf Guggenbuhl–Craig called them "empty souls". These are
individuals who lack the ordinary connection that binds all of us and lack inhibitions that those
connections impose (Kiehl & Hoffman, 2011). They show up in history's myths and literature. From
the bible starting with Cain, to the psychopaths in Shakespeare like Aaron the Moor in

Broken Chain Of Authority In Henry IV
In Henry IV, Part 1, Shakespeare establishes a theme of a broken chain of authority through
Hotspur's vivid language revealing the Percy's regret in originally supporting the illegitimate king.
Despite originally supporting him, Hotspur shows true disrespect for the King through symbolism
whenever he calls him a "thorn" and a "cankered Bollingbroke." In Medieval times subordinates of
the King were supposed to show the utmost respect to their superior. Disrespecting and insulting
your King was both taboo and forbidden at the time. Hotspur's language shows how truly disgusted
he is with his King. Hotspur's juvenile insults show that the chain of Authority is indeed broken.
Hotspur doesn't only think his King is disgusting; Hotspur also implies

Themes And Imagery In James Joyce's Araby
"Araby" is chock full of interesting imagery. This imagery points us towards outstanding themes.
Along with imagery, diction can point us in a more concise direction by cuing us in on the year
and/or the location of the piece. Knowing these things can help us, as readers, better understand the
words James Joyce chooses and helps us get a firmer grasp in the imagery. An outstanding theme in
"Araby" is heartbreak. Now, heartbreak is in a lot of the imagery and diction in this piece. The
narrator talks a lot about this girl that he is completely obsessed and infatuated with. He is
constantly frustrated, bitter, and confused by his feelings for this girl throughout the story. His
attempts to woo her are abysmal at best because, as he realizes later, infatuation and obsession are
fruitless. Going with our narrator's frustration with this girl, he becomes frustrated with his uncle.
His uncle was to give him money to get to the bazaar, for him to attempt to woo this girl once again.
His uncle however is late, so he takes to wandering the upstairs rooms. He describes the rooms as
"high, cold, empty rooms." He may see the rooms this way because he feels if he misses this bazaar
he misses out on a chance with the girl. He thinks, nay, knows, he will be utterly heartbroken if he
cannot get her anything. He knows it wouldn't hurt to, at least, try to win her affection. But he finds
when he gets there that he is too awkward to buy her anything. He is completely uncomfortable with
his surroundings, but nonetheless he is heartbroken that he couldn't prove to this girl how much he
liked her. Although this does lead to his epiphany that all infatuation is fruitless. The thing with
infatuation, despite it being fruitless, it makes a person feel. Good things, yes, but also bad. In
"Araby" he describes the air as feeling "pitilessly raw." He feels this heartbreak not just on the
inside, but also on the outside. His infatuation makes him feel differently, kind of like a cold he can't
seem to shake. This infatuation also changes how he hears, not on a biological or anatomical level,
but more on an emotional level. The narrator tells us, "Their cries reached me weakened and
distinct..." This can give us an insight into how he

Essay on Broken Lives
Broken Lives written by Estelle Blackburn is an expository text, which through research has
presented that nineteen year old John Button was wrongfully convicted of killing his seventeen year
old girlfriend Rosemary Anderson in a hit and run. I believe through my reading of Broken Lives
that the key factor of expository texts is to explore awkward questions deeply and critically. In this
case who was guilty of killing Rosemary Anderson in a hit and run, John Button or Eric Edgar
Cooke, and the effect of Cooke's crimes and murders had on people.

one of the reasons behind his hatred to everyone. Through the graphic detail of his nightly prowls

"He raised the hatchet and brought it down with all his strength... He raised the hatchet again and

Cooke's disgusting and disturbing crimes affected many people in the small town of Perth in the

through Cooke's acts of evil. I believe that the most broken life presented in the text was that of John

A commentary of the poem "The Broken Tower" by Hart Crane
A Broken Tower, by Hart Crane, is a metaphor–rich poem that is very ambiguous but seems to
describe the difficulties of the creative process and the way in which the artist is bound and
compelled by it. Crane uses many religious metaphors and references, directly mentioning God and
also bells, which are associated with churches. It is possible to interpret the poem in a religious
sense, but it could be argued that religion and art are similar metaphors; that, for the poet, his
writings are both a method of spiritual expression and a search for truth. The title, A Broken Tower,
refers to a continuing metaphor in the poem and suggests the deconstruction of established
paradigms which is necessary for artistic progress. Throughout the poem, ... Show more content on

This is congruent with the need to destroy the tower, or destroy traditional ideas. Supporting the
strong visual imagery is the frequent mention of sound: the choir, voices, reveilles and echoes.
Imperfection is once again alluded to with the entry of the poet into the broken world in order to
trace the visionary company of love, its voice. This seems to directly refer to his creative process in
seeking truth and beauty in his writing. It is also the most positive concept expressed in the poem
thus far–– a wholly positive one, rather than the difficult process of destroying the obsolete
mentioned before. However, unlike the mighty tower, this voice is an instant in the wind and not for
long–– in other words, transitory. It is also mysterious and beyond the poets control, like the bells in
the tower, as the poet admits he know[s] not whither [it is] hurled.
Crane makes a more specific reference to his art; his word, as opposed to the Word of that tribunal
monarch of the air. The latter belongs to God, who is depicted as powerful and judgemental: the
deity of the Broken Tower. This could be seen as a personification of the judgemental ostracism that
Crane faced as a homosexual. The God metaphor is expanded on, with mention of Christs wounds
pledged once to hope, but also a rejection of it: cleft to despair. In this stanza, Crane offers his
word–– a replacement of the old Tower, symbolizing a

Broken April Essay
Broken April by Ismail Kadare depicts the story of newly weds Bessian and Diana on their
honeymoon. The word "broken" in the title not only represents how April, for Gjorg, has been
metaphorically "broken". It seems to suggest the breakdown of Bessian and Diana's relationship as
well. They are a tragic couple, whose marriage disintegrates to an almost unsalvageable state by the
end of the novel, with Kadare using words such as "empty" to describe it. Kadare also uses the
landscape around them as a metaphor for their fading marriage. For example, when Bessian failed to
get a conversation going with Diana, Kadare mentioned that the "Night was falling" (168). It is as
though she were slowly closing off and turning away from him, just as darkness starts to set in.
Later on in the novel, when Diana refused to respond to Bessian who asked her why she had gone

herself, saying "I meant to say that it's beautiful and terrible at the same time." Bessian then agrees
with her, saying that "it's tragically beautiful". Moreover, Diana also regards life under the Kanun as
"horrible" (69) and "dreadful" (116), while Bessian finds it alluring and that despite the sadness, "it
had grandeur" (71). This shows how Diana and Bessian have very different beliefs. Diana's first
reaction to death was that it is terrible. On the other hand, Bessian, who is more accepting of the
Kanun and its effects, seems to see the beauty of death through the brutality of it all. He tells Diana
that it is a "special gift" "to measure one's days by the yardstick of death" (72) and to this, Diana

Literary Techniques Used in Mother to Son by Langston...
"Mother to Son," written by Langston Hughes, is a short poem about a mother who is teaching her
son about perseverance and determination by using the image of a staircase. She explains that even
though life has given her many hardships, she continues forward and she urges her son to do the
same. In "Mother to Son," Langston Hughes uses an extended metaphor, imagery, dialect, and
structure to paint a picture of a weary mother who wants her son to persevere through the hardships
of life. The theme of this poem is determination and the value of experience. The mother is telling
her son that no matter what happens, he should never give up. Even though this is a rather sad poem,

A staircase that is broken would not be in a wealthy person's home, so this also shows us that she is
poor. In the 1920's, which was when this poem was written, many African Americans were moving
from the South into the cities for a chance at making a living. Most of them were very poor and
lived in poverty, which is why the staircases would be broken down, bare, and no carpet. The title,
"Mother to Son," tells us that this is a mother giving her son advice. Langston Hughes opens the
poem by saying, "Well, son, I'll tell you:" (1), which could mean that the son had asked her about
her life or that maybe he was complaining about his current struggles. The mother then begins to tell
her son that her life has not been easy, but she never gives up and she urges her son to do the same:
So boy, don't you turn back. Don't you set down on the step 'Cause you finds it's kinder hard. Don't
you fall now––
The mother is telling her son that he should never turn around or sit down just because it gets tough,
and she uses herself as an example. You can see the determination that this mother has. She keeps
trying and persevering through her troubles, even when it seems like there is no hope, "And
sometimes goin' in the dark / Where there ain't been no light." (12–13). "And sometimes goin' in the

The Broken Heart a Poem by John Donne Essay
Being a human being comes with several feelings and experiences that shape who we are, some
favourable and beneficial some shattering and distressing, one of the most common is that of love,
Love is the single most celebrated human emotion, though nevertheless love can end in heartbreak.
A broken heart can be considered a painful empty feeling or the writhing of the soul. The Urban
Dictionary defines a broken heart as 'the feeling of complete devastation, and extreme sadness after
a break–up of a relationship or loss of a spouse/relative.' Throughout history, a vast body of
literature examines its influences and explores its meanings. Typically, poets and authors examine
love's countless virtues. Numerous poets have commented on the nature ... Show more content on

John Donne was born into a catholic family in 1572, during a strong anti–Catholic period.
Throughout Donne's life he wrote poems renouncing his anti–Catholic faith. In 1615 he converted to
Anglicanism and was appointed Royal Chaplin. His elaborate metaphors, religious symbolism and
flair for drama soon established him as a thriving preacher. In 1617 Donne's wife Anne Moore died
shortly after giving birth to their twelfth child. It is believed that Donne was completely and utterly
heartbroken by the passing of his wife, this enlightens the motive behind the broken heart.
STRUCTURE The Broken heart is a type of writing style known as a sonnet. A sonnet has come to
be known generally as a poem containing fourteen lines of iambic pentameter (Sonnet Writers,
2011.) The Broken Heart has four paragraphs (octets) following an ababccdd rhyme scheme.
Although the key image in the poem is a heart broken into a hundred pieces, the poem has a well–
ordered pattern, and instance of Donne's common usage of contradiction.
TONE It can be said that a melancholy tone is set just through the title of the poem, "The Broken
Heart." Throughout the entirety of this poem, the gloomy tone continues. Donne begins the poem
with negative words such as decaying, devouring, and plague to describe the effects of love. These
words sufficiently create unpleasant images of mold taking over food, a lion attacking its prey, and a
disease killing a village. Not specifically how one would imagine

main character of the story loves to run and he was no longer able to do that after the accident the
one thing that he loved to do he could no longer do anymore and this has had an effect on Zebra.
After the accident Zebra could no longer run and is faced with a rough time because he identified as
a runner which he couldn't do. I know that this is effecting him because in the story it states "When
it was Zebra's turn he told a story about a bird that one day crashed against a closed windowpane
and broke a wing. A boy tried to heal the wing but couldn't. The bird died, and the boy buried it
under a tree on his lawn...You always tell such sad stories," Andrea said." Zebra is feeling hopeless
and it shows through his writing. In his class he was writing about a bird that had crashed into a
windowpane and had a broken wing that couldn't be fixed, the bird ended up dying in the end and
even though this story is about a bird Zebra is taking his emotions and putting them into writing
explaining his

Peter Temple the Broken Shore Views and Values Essay
THE BROKEN SHORE
Peter Temple's acclaimed crime fiction novel 'The Broken Shore' chronicles the unfolding of a
murder investigation on the rugged Victorian coastline through the eyes of a morally flexible small
town cop. The novel showcases the complex social structures apparent in contemporary rural
Victoria, particularly focusing on the often shaky relations between anglo and indigenous
Australians. It also addresses the segregation between the have's and the have not's within society
and the institutions that separate the social classes and explores the intricacies of the arguably
broken Australian/Victorian legal system. Temple uses Joe Cashin, his lone–crusader type
protagonist, to assert his view that the justice system ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through the commentary of characters like Cashin and Cecily Addison, who are both relative
outsiders in Cromarty, Temple is able to convey a fictional first hand view of the insular society that
holds in high esteem the likes of Charles Bourgoyne and Helen Castlemen, as they are moneyed,
educated and challenge the stereotypical country hick labels that are often collectively placed on
citizens residing in rural areas. Through the use of Cashin and Cecily, Temple is also able to
construct an unbiased observation of how these same areas discriminate against the, often
indigenous and/or low socio economic, down trodden members of society and ostracise them both
physically, through the demarkation line that tells indigenous Australians where they can and cannot
live, restricting them to the "Daunt settlement", and also intellectually, through the copious use of
words like "coon" and "nigger" in regard to the "blackfellas". Surprisingly it is not only the bogan–
esque beach bums who assert their politically incorrect and blatantly racist attitudes towards the
indigenous residents. Members of the working class like Hopgood and his team for example also
exhibit prejudice against the Aboriginals and contrary to the traditional 'innocent 'til proven guilty'
notion it seems to be more of a 'guilty 'til proven innocent' situation when the young "coons" are
suspected of robbing and murdering Bourgoyne. This is perhaps the product of how the
parochialism of small

Orla asked as she admired her newly–painted red nails. "Blue won't be back until ten." "I know," Gansey said. He's been there when she's left at two. It was now three. "Am I in the way?" "Not really," Orla said, but one of her eyebrows was slowly rising. She looked curious. Or hungry. Calla swept into the kitchen, her purple shaw billowing out behind her. She looked very much the seer today."Orla, leave the poor boy alone. Can't you see he's suffering from a broken heart?" she said dramatically, like she was reading from a script. Gansey had been caught off guard initially, but in hindsight, it seemed inevitable. Ronan and Adam smoothed out each other's rough patches, for the most part. They were stronger together. And there was a lot less fighting in Monomouth overall (but more odd noises in the middle of the night). "You didn't let me finish! You're unhappy about Ronan and Adam's new relationship because you feel left out." Gansey bristled. "Well, my best friends got together. It's natural to feel excluded. They have less time to do the things we used to. But I'll acclimate." "'I'll acclimate,'" Calla mocked with a snort thrown in for good measure. "That's not what I meant." Gansey frowned. What did she– Oh. OH. "No! It's not–" "It so is. You can't hide emotion that strong from us. Even Orla could probably pick up on it." "You're mistaken." Gansey stood and was out the front door before Calla could throw another word at him. He started his car, punched the accelerator, and ignored The Pig's roaring protests as he ripped down the road. Pierce's Landing is at the core of the legacy that is the Pierce surname in Hope. Now that's a shit tonne of pressure and expectations resting on my shoulders. Laying my surf board down on the sand, I shake my hair out cursing myself for forgetting my towel. The damn solicitor's voice from yesterday keeps repeating itself in my head, 'Pierce's Landing including all equipment, vehicles and dwellings will be left to one Mr Jacob Cole Pierce'. That statement shouldn't shock me. I mean it's been a family tradition that the land has always been past down to the eldest son, in this case it's just the eldest, and only, grandson. ... All decisions and the future of Pierce's Landing with fall down to me and me alone. I haven't even given any thought to what this means for my career as a bull rider. I mean, sure, many of the guys on the circuit have land and some even have families that they go home to after all obligations of a show are finished. But the rest of us like to play nomads, choosing to sleep many of nights in our swags as we travel the back roads, exploring new towns. Just us and our utes. I always assumed by the time this land would become mine, I'd be done with travelling the backroads and jumping on bulls. That I'd be ready to settle down. Sitting on my board with my feet in the sand, I look out at the ocean and take in the smell of the salty air that has always reminded me of home. There was a car parked on the right side of the tower house at the very edge of the beach, where the parking lot started. There was a Tower house keeper who said he was suspicious of gunshots he had heard and he called 911, like someone would do if they heard a gunshot at this time of night. There was also another witness at the scene a homeless man who used a payphone to call in the gunshots he had heard. The pay phone was at the far side of the beach about 100 yards from the Tower House. When the Ambulance and the Policies officers arrived it was a very dark and cold night. • 6. My First Love Essay Everyone loves to tell the story of their first love, and the beautiful lesson they learned through the adventure. You hear the phrase, "you'll never forget your first" as you see a small smirk flourish across the faces of people who remember their story. Through all the experiences shared, I never would have believed the result of falling out of love. All of the novels and sweet smiles never hinted about the time I would end up crumbled down on my bedroom's floor, with two years of a person's presence surrounding a broken heart. Nobody will speak of watching your first love leave for college, knowing that they will want to move on. I went through the stages of heartbreak that left me with a cracked and bruised heart. The recovery and journey of finding acceptance and love for myself, created a book of my personal lessons. Going back to that summer is like reading the final book of your favorite series, you soak in the words trying to read slow, savoring. Completing the series leaves a bitter sweet moment, comparing to the emotions that overcame my mind through the process of watching him go. However, it was not beautiful and bittersweet as romance novels paint your first love out to be. Each page in our novel transformed from love to a war zone, as loyalty became nonexistent, and trust only present in waves. The summer was beautiful, but in my heart I knew that this novel was only a fairy tale coming to it's end. There was nothing left to be painted. That hot and humid ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Rite Of Initiation In Araby By James Joyce Rite of Initiation Rite of initiation, sounds like something frightening, but in literature a rite or story of initiation does not refer precisely to something of terror. The protagonist of "Araby" faces experiences for which his previous experiences had not prepared him. In this case the main character enters a new stage of his life (an evolutionary stage), from childhood to adolescence. For this reason, "Araby," by James Joyce, should be considered a story of initiation. The protagonist, and at the same time the narrator of this story is a child that all the experiences he has had are based on school and play with his friends. He lives in a small, quiet neighborhood, where day to day life is monotonous. However, the protagonist loses interest in the games, since something else catches his attention: the sister of his friend Mangan. This boy spends hours looking at this girl and does not understand the sensations and feelings that she causes, feelings that come to his life for the first time to make him discover "love." The protagonist has not lived before a similar situation since it is the first time that falls in love. This first experience represents a discovery. This child does not understand the feelings discovered and the state in which he is. "(...) I myself did not understand (...) I thought little of the future. I did not know whether I would ever speak to her or not or, if I spoke to her, how I could tell her of my confused adoration" (par. 5). The protagonist ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Analysis Of Man In The Mirror "Man in the Mirror" is about a man who believes that only by changing himself will he be able to change the world. The main focus of the song is a man's struggle to improve himself morally after witnessing his inability to impact the lives of those in need. Michael Jackson reflects on how the world around him is suffering while he lives a life of comfort, and the guilt triggers his decision to change himself so that he can eventually help the world. . The song raises up questions such as,"What purpose does an individual serve in a community? How can we bring about positive changes to the world? How can one person make a major impact in the world? "Man in the Mirror" sends a very universal message, basically telling the world to improve themselves individually so that the whole improves as a result. The discussion will focus more on the symbolical lyrics because there is a lot of straightforward vocabulary in each verse. In the first verse, Michael uses a winter coat and cold weather to give an example of the trying times that some people undergo. First he mentions the coat he wears to protect himself from the chilly weather "As I turned up the collar on my favourite winter coat." Despite wearing the coat, Michael states that the wind still got to his head "This wind is blowin' my mind." This personification of the wind is used to illustrate how Michael escaped the physical affects of the cold but not the mental effects. The reason why it affected him mentally is because of what follows, which is the sight of "kids in the street, with not enough to eat". Michael feels sorry for the kids suffering in the street because he has the resources to survive and they don't. He states that the coat is his favorite, meaning he has multiple coats. The difference between him and the struggling children becomes even more apparent when the audience realizes that Michael is rich and that he has probably never suffered like the kids. He then questions himself saying: "who am I, to be blind?" In this case "blind" is used as a metaphor to show how much neglect the kids have been receiving from him as an individual. Although the kids are there struggling, Michael is probably too caught up in his own world to acknowledge their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The objective of this study is to answer how communicable diseases can be broken at a link within the communicable disease chain and to answer whether there are steps nurses can take to facilitate this process. This work will provide a specific example. According to a report published by John Hopkins University the major cause of deaths in emergency and post–conflict situations are those caused by outbreaks of disease. These outbreaks are reported to raise baseline death rates "sixty times." ( ) The primary killers in complex emergencies over the past ten years are reported as "malaria, diarrhoeal diseases, and pneumonia with TB and HIV/AIDS gaining increasing attention more recently." ( ) It is additionally reported that more than 40% of deaths during the acute emergency stage in camp situations result from diarrhoeal diseases and that 80% of these are among children less than two years of age. John Hopkins University additionally reported that it is possible to minimize disease outbreaks and deaths during natural disasters and emergencies of a complex nature through "introduction of disease surveillance, epidemic preparedness, effective prevention, and control including case management." Not like she wanted to sleep; she just felt bored, and she had no faintest idea what to do while anticipating for her uncle to pick her up from school. The sky was limpid that day, and the sun shone directly toward her, and Wanda felt like hell. She doesn't have any place to be since that day was the construction's day on the nearby road in front of the school. Not more than ten minutes later, a sound of footsteps growing near her, triggered Wanda to straight up her body and peeked behind the wall to find out whose footstep was that. It was Chris. He was balancing a pile of books in his hand. Most of the books are from the library, and Wanda guessed that he was searching for more information about what Mr Brown gave them from previous Biology class about a plant, which she never heard before. Apparently, Chris found it already. "Thank God you here," he said, tried to balance the book when one of it almost slipped from his hand. "Can you help me?" Alfonso's personality was shown when he done this. All he wanted to do was look handsome, so girls would like him. What he didn't know was that not all girls are the same. Another example is from the poem "Oranges". It is "A nickel in my pocket, And when she lifted a chocolate That cost a dime, I didn't say a thing,". This defines his personality as sweet. As the result of symbolism, readers can dive just a little bit deeper into the meaning and core of the work. Birds are a moderately frequent emblem, serving as representations of freedom, independence, and not afraid to be loud or to speak their minds. In Kate Chopin's novella, "The Awakening," birds were used to express Edna's true feelings and desires, to explain the courage required to defy the standards, and to show Edna's final defeat. Many animals, especially birds, seem to communicate in a language that only they can really understand. The novella starts by setting a scene with the description of two birds who do exactly that. Chopin began by stating, "A green and yellow parrot, which hung in a cage outside the door, kept repeating over and over: 'Allez vous–en! Allez vous–en! Sapristi! That's all right!' He could speak a little Spanish, and also a language which nobody understood, unless it was the mocking–bird that hung on the other side of the door, whistling his fluty notes out upon the breeze with maddening persistence" (Chopin 1). I would hear, "Sometimes you have to let things go, so there's room for better things to come into your life." I convinced myself to think that this was just a phrase people told themselves and others to make one another believe that life would get better. It wasn't until one day that I believed it too. I was very appreciative for the life I had and the people I had living in it. I had a family to support and care for me and friends to spend time with. As my friends and I grew older and began maturing, we began to see the true colors in one another. We had different beliefs and opinions, and faced up hill battles with one another. Years of a close friendship began to crumble, until it whittled away to nothing. Years of memories burned away and laughs shared between two people suddenly became deceiving glares of anger in the halls. Losing the friendship I held with another for nearly four years was what was the most challenging. Someone who knew everything about you, who knew you better than you knew yourself, was now just another figure in the crowd. We become so acclimated with objects once they become a part of our life, that when they're gone we question on how to live without them. Seeing things reminded me of the bond that wasn't supposed to break, and I wondered how I would ever lift myself up from the beating I'd just taken. As time passed on, I saw the ... Psychopathic And Genetics : A Broken Chain Psychopathic & Genetics: A Broken Chain Christian Washington South University – Richmond Psychopathic & Genetics: A Broken Chain Psychopathy has been a growing topic in psychology in the past several years. Studies and research wonder what is the cause for this behavior, how does the disorder develop, and how it is linked through genetics. Since psychopathy can be linked to genetic traits these individuals are more dangerous compared to those who are labeled sociopaths. Environmental factors also play a role in the behavior of psychopaths, but in different ways since antisocial tendencies are developed. But the notion that genes play an important role are still being widely accepted and continues to the present day to remain a controversial topic. What is known is the behavior in psychopaths are not just passed down genetically because socialization is a key aspect for psychopathy development, environmental factors play a part in psychopathy, and antisocial behavior is an indicator of psychopathic tendencies. It has been said that psychopaths have been a part of society since the emergence of the human species. Psychiatrist Adolf Guggenbuhl–Craig called them "empty souls". These are individuals who lack the ordinary connection that binds all of us and lack inhibitions that those connections impose (Kiehl & Hoffman, 2011). They show up in history's myths and literature. • 26. Themes And Imagery In James Joyce's Araby "Araby" is chock full of interesting imagery. This imagery points us towards outstanding themes. Along with imagery, diction can point us in a more concise direction by cuing us in on the year and/or the location of the piece. Knowing these things can help us, as readers, better understand the words James Joyce chooses and helps us get a firmer grasp in the imagery. An outstanding theme in "Araby" is heartbreak. Now, heartbreak is in a lot of the imagery and diction in this piece. The narrator talks a lot about this girl that he is completely obsessed and infatuated with. He is constantly frustrated, bitter, and confused by his feelings for this girl throughout the story. His attempts to woo her are abysmal at best because, as he realizes later, infatuation and obsession are fruitless. Going with our narrator's frustration with this girl, he becomes frustrated with his uncle. His uncle was to give him money to get to the bazaar, for him to attempt to woo this girl once again. His uncle however is late, so he takes to wandering the upstairs rooms. He describes the rooms as "high, cold, empty rooms." He may see the rooms this way because he feels if he misses this bazaar he misses out on a chance with the girl. He thinks, nay, knows, he will be utterly heartbroken if he cannot get her anything. He knows it wouldn't hurt to, at least, try to win her affection. But he finds when he gets there that he is too awkward to buy her anything. He is completely uncomfortable with his surroundings, but nonetheless he is heartbroken that he couldn't prove to this girl how much he liked her. Although this does lead to his epiphany that all infatuation is fruitless. The thing with infatuation, despite it being fruitless, it makes a person feel. Good things, yes, but also bad. In "Araby" he describes the air as feeling "pitilessly raw." He feels this heartbreak not just on the inside, but also on the outside. His infatuation makes him feel differently, kind of like a cold he can't seem to shake. This infatuation also changes how he hears, not on a biological or anatomical level, but more on an emotional level. The narrator tells us, "Their cries reached me weakened and distinct..." I believe through my reading of Broken Lives that the key factor of expository texts is to explore awkward questions deeply and critically. In this case who was guilty of killing Rosemary Anderson in a hit and run, John Button or Eric Edgar Cooke, and the effect of Cooke's crimes and murders had on people. John Button was a loving, caring, active and an innocent man. John's relationship with girlfriend Rosemary Anderson was strong. They planed to get married and Rosemary's family accepted John for ... Eric was left alone and neglected because his father's loathing and abuse". Eric was born with deformities and considered himself as a freak, this being one of the reasons behind his hatred to everyone. Through the graphic detail of his nightly prowls and murders we not only dislike Cooke but also blame him for the murder of Rosemary Anderson. "He raised the hatchet and brought it down with all his strength... He raised the hatchet again and chopped into Brewer ferociously, twelve to thirteen times". Cooke confessed to killing Rosemary on the day of his execution, saying John Button was innocent. From Eric Cooke's childhood of abuse and neglect, his deformities and his nightly prowls and murders presented in Broken Lives. Blackburn has explored Cooke deeply and critically and presents him as being guilty of killing Rosemary Anderson. Cooke's disgusting and disturbing crimes affected many people in the small town of Perth in the nineteen fifties. • 29. A commentary of the poem "The Broken Tower" by Hart Crane A Broken Tower, by Hart Crane, is a metaphor–rich poem that is very ambiguous but seems to describe the difficulties of the creative process and the way in which the artist is bound and compelled by it. Crane uses many religious metaphors and references, directly mentioning God and also bells, which are associated with churches. It is possible to interpret the poem in a religious sense, but it could be argued that religion and art are similar metaphors; that, for the poet, his writings are both a method of spiritual expression and a search for truth. The title, A Broken Tower, refers to a continuing metaphor in the poem and suggests the deconstruction of established paradigms which is necessary for artistic progress. Throughout the poem, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is congruent with the need to destroy the tower, or destroy traditional ideas. Supporting the strong visual imagery is the frequent mention of sound: the choir, voices, reveilles and echoes. Imperfection is once again alluded to with the entry of the poet into the broken world in order to trace the visionary company of love, its voice. This seems to directly refer to his creative process in seeking truth and beauty in his writing. It is also the most positive concept expressed in the poem thus far–– a wholly positive one, rather than the difficult process of destroying the obsolete mentioned before. However, unlike the mighty tower, this voice is an instant in the wind and not for long–– in other words, transitory. It is also mysterious and beyond the poets control, like the bells in the tower, as the poet admits he know[s] not whither [it is] hurled. Crane makes a more specific reference to his art; his word, as opposed to the Word of that tribunal monarch of the air. The latter belongs to God, who is depicted as powerful and judgemental: the deity of the Broken Tower. This could be seen as a personification of the judgemental ostracism that Crane faced as a homosexual. The God metaphor is expanded on, with mention of Christs wounds pledged once to hope, but also a rejection of it: cleft to despair. In this stanza, Crane offers his word–– a replacement of the old Tower, symbolizing a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Broken April Essay Broken April by Ismail Kadare depicts the story of newly weds Bessian and Diana on their honeymoon. The word "broken" in the title not only represents how April, for Gjorg, has been metaphorically "broken". It seems to suggest the breakdown of Bessian and Diana's relationship as well. They are a tragic couple, whose marriage disintegrates to an almost unsalvageable state by the end of the novel, with Kadare using words such as "empty" to describe it. Kadare also uses the landscape around them as a metaphor for their fading marriage. For example, when Bessian failed to get a conversation going with Diana, Kadare mentioned that the "Night was falling" (168). It is as though she were slowly closing off and turning away from him, just as darkness starts to set in. Later on in the novel, when Diana refused to respond to Bessian who asked her why she had gone into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Straightaway, Diana could not help but respond with "how terrible!" However, after Bessian expressed his surprise at her response, she corrects herself, saying "I meant to say that it's beautiful and terrible at the same time." Bessian then agrees with her, saying that "it's tragically beautiful". Moreover, Diana also regards life under the Kanun as "horrible" (69) and "dreadful" (116), while Bessian finds it alluring and that despite the sadness, "it had grandeur" (71). This shows how Diana and Bessian have very different beliefs. Diana's first reaction to death was that it is terrible. On the other hand, Bessian, who is more accepting of the Kanun and its effects, seems to see the beauty of death through the brutality of it all. He tells Diana that it is a "special gift" "to measure one's days by the yardstick of death" (72) and to this, Diana merely shrugs her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Literary Techniques Used in Mother to Son by Langston... "Mother to Son," written by Langston Hughes, is a short poem about a mother who is teaching her son about perseverance and determination by using the image of a staircase. She explains that even though life has given her many hardships, she continues forward and she urges her son to do the same. In "Mother to Son," Langston Hughes uses an extended metaphor, imagery, dialect, and structure to paint a picture of a weary mother who wants her son to persevere through the hardships of life. The theme of this poem is determination and the value of experience. The mother is telling her son that no matter what happens, he should never give up. A staircase that is broken would not be in a wealthy person's home, so this also shows us that she is poor. In the 1920's, which was when this poem was written, many African Americans were moving from the South into the cities for a chance at making a living. Most of them were very poor and lived in poverty, which is why the staircases would be broken down, bare, and no carpet. The title, "Mother to Son," tells us that this is a mother giving her son advice. Langston Hughes opens the poem by saying, "Well, son, I'll tell you:" (1), which could mean that the son had asked her about her life or that maybe he was complaining about his current struggles. The mother then begins to tell her son that her life has not been easy, but she never gives up and she urges her son to do the same: So boy, don't you turn back. Don't you set down on the step 'Cause you finds it's kinder hard. Don't you fall now–– The mother is telling her son that he should never turn around or sit down just because it gets tough, and she uses herself as an example. You can see the determination that this mother has. She keeps trying and persevering through her troubles, even when it seems like there is no hope, "And sometimes goin' in the dark / Where there ain't been no light." (12–13). The Broken Heart a Poem by John Donne Essay Being a human being comes with several feelings and experiences that shape who we are, some favourable and beneficial some shattering and distressing, one of the most common is that of love, Love is the single most celebrated human emotion, though nevertheless love can end in heartbreak. A broken heart can be considered a painful empty feeling or the writhing of the soul. The Urban Dictionary defines a broken heart as 'the feeling of complete devastation, and extreme sadness after a break–up of a relationship or loss of a spouse/relative.' Throughout history, a vast body of literature examines its influences and explores its meanings. Typically, poets and authors examine love's countless virtues. Throughout Donne's life he wrote poems renouncing his anti–Catholic faith. In 1615 he converted to Anglicanism and was appointed Royal Chaplin. His elaborate metaphors, religious symbolism and flair for drama soon established him as a thriving preacher. In 1617 Donne's wife Anne Moore died shortly after giving birth to their twelfth child. It is believed that Donne was completely and utterly heartbroken by the passing of his wife, this enlightens the motive behind the broken heart. STRUCTURE The Broken heart is a type of writing style known as a sonnet. A sonnet has come to be known generally as a poem containing fourteen lines of iambic pentameter (Sonnet Writers, 2011.) The Broken Heart has four paragraphs (octets) following an ababccdd rhyme scheme. Although the key image in the poem is a heart broken into a hundred pieces, the poem has a well– ordered pattern, and instance of Donne's common usage of contradiction. TONE It can be said that a melancholy tone is set just through the title of the poem, "The Broken Heart." Throughout the entirety of this poem, the gloomy tone continues. Donne begins the poem with negative words such as decaying, devouring, and plague to describe the effects of love. These words sufficiently create unpleasant images of mold taking over food, a lion attacking its prey, and a disease killing a village. Not specifically how one would imagine ... My evidence to support this theme is "Then, a year ago, racing down Franklin Avenue, he had given himself that push and had begun to turn into an eagle, when a huge rushing shadow appeared in his line of vision and crashed into him and plunged him into a darkness from which he emerged very, very slowly. . ." This is the conflict of the story Zebra the main character of the story loves to run and he was no longer able to do that after the accident the one thing that he loved to do he could no longer do anymore and this has had an effect on Zebra. After the accident Zebra could no longer run and is faced with a rough time because he identified as a runner which he couldn't do. Peter Temple the Broken Shore Views and Values Essay THE BROKEN SHORE Peter Temple's acclaimed crime fiction novel 'The Broken Shore' chronicles the unfolding of a murder investigation on the rugged Victorian coastline through the eyes of a morally flexible small town cop. The novel showcases the complex social structures apparent in contemporary rural Victoria, particularly focusing on the often shaky relations between anglo and indigenous Australians. It also addresses the segregation between the have's and the have not's within society and the institutions that separate the social classes and explores the intricacies of the arguably broken Australian/Victorian legal system. Through the commentary of characters like Cashin and Cecily Addison, who are both relative outsiders in Cromarty, Temple is able to convey a fictional first hand view of the insular society that holds in high esteem the likes of Charles Bourgoyne and Helen Castlemen, as they are moneyed, educated and challenge the stereotypical country hick labels that are often collectively placed on citizens residing in rural areas. Through the use of Cashin and Cecily, Temple is also able to construct an unbiased observation of how these same areas discriminate against the, often indigenous and/or low socio economic, down trodden members of society and ostracise them both physically, through the demarkation line that tells indigenous Australians where they can and cannot live, restricting them to the "Daunt settlement", and also intellectually, through the copious use of words like "coon" and "nigger" in regard to the "blackfellas". Surprisingly it is not only the bogan– esque beach bums who assert their politically incorrect and blatantly racist attitudes towards the indigenous residents. Members of the working class like Hopgood and his team for example also exhibit prejudice against the Aboriginals and contrary to the traditional 'innocent 'til proven guilty' notion it seems to be more of a 'guilty 'til proven innocent' situation when the young "coons" are suspected of robbing and murdering Bourgoyne.
