3. MISE EN SCENE
The mise en scene in this Michael Jackson video from 1987 is the
clothing of that time. The video is not trying to put on a historic or a
future feel however is just representing the current time. Males were
predominantly in suits however clothing to our day and age now is
so varied among intra gender and genders where people wear very
different clothing to each other. This Michael Jackson video therefore
shows the lack of variety amongst intra genders in this time and how
males meet the common the stereotype of this time. Moreover the
woman are all in stereotypical dresses. However if we look at music
videos now we see them going against typical conventions and
wearing things such as jogging bottoms. This shows how music
videos are changing with the time and meeting the changes within
society. Moreover as woman's rights have become more powerful in
recent years music videos which are based on woman have become
more expressive and less self contained as they are less worried
about how they are seen.
4. PERFORMANCE
This Michael Jackson video was a dancing video and had no narrative. Music
videos these days tend to float towards a narrative story with meaning. However
the music back in the 80s was party led and therefore the videos had a dancing
party feel to match the music. Music has however changed and slow love songs
with meaning are more widely used. Therefore narrative videos are used to aid
the meaningful music. Videos our days are therefore now more varied. We still
have performance lead videos however the increase in music availability has led
into different music video types. In the Michael Jackson video he is notorious for
being a good dancer and this is always shown through his music videos as this is
what people want to see as well as his music when listening to him. This Michael
Jackson video is putting a dancing plot on a gangster theme. Michael Jackson is
including his signature moves the moonwalk. We see things like this very rarely at
the current time as there are very little artists who are notorious for being dance
lead. This suggests music nowadays is less about the video and more about the
song. This may be because of the proliferation of things such as music on the
radio and digital phone music where you do not see the video.
