Essay on Analysis of Hip-Hop and Youth Culture
Analysis of Hip–Hop and Youth Culture
Throughout the last twenty–five years, a new form of expression has continued to evolve. Hip–Hop,
once limited to urban music and dance has become a widespread form of communication exhibited
and enjoyed by young people throughout the world. Hip–Hop is no longer limited to rap music and
break dancing; today it represents a multi–billion dollar industry that influences everything from
fashion to prime– time television programming, professional sports, mass media marketing and
advertising. Today Hip–Hop is becoming a way of life, a culture that is intricately woven into every
aspect of young people's daily lives. We may not necessarily be consciously aware of ... Show more

In the early days, Hip–Hop was primarily related to the rhyming, rhythmic spoken word art form
known as rapping. Rapping is, in fact, not a new method of creative expression. The ease with
which young people can participate in this form of creativity seems to have helped the phenomenal
growth of this genre of music and expression.
Review of rap music lyrics and styling from the early to mid–1970's, when Hip–Hop began, reveals
several aspects of the musical genre that appear to have had significant appeal to young people,
particularly those in urban communities. There has never been one all–inclusive form of rap music.
It covers a broad range of ideas, styling and techniques that are unique to specific demographic
areas, geographic regions and territories and locales.
The following comprises some of the hallmarks of early rap music:
* Simple yet dominant percussive patterns
* Limited reliance on traditional musical systems of chord, verse, chorus and other formal and/or
traditional methods of Western musical structure
* Non–traditional utilisation of musical instruments including

Essay on The Globalization of Hip Hop Music
According to Wikipedia, Hip–hop music, also called rap music, is a musical genre consisting of a
stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that
is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic
elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching, breaking/dancing, and graffiti writing. Hip hop is also
characterized by these other elements: sampling (or synthesis), and beatboxing. Hip hop music
developed from party DJ's mixing and remixing popular music that was already out. This music was
usually from the funk, soul and disco genre. It began during the 1970's in the Bronx in New York
City and very popular among African Americans. Spoken hip hop music is ... Show more content on

According to a paper by David Galenson titled The Globalization of Advanced Art in the Twentieth
Century, "Globalization involves not only the movement of goods, but also the movement of people
and ideas. For advanced art, a central element of globalization has been the spread of important
innovations – the geographic diffusion of new techniques and styles." So, according to Galenson,
the globalization of hip hop is not just about the music or the style being celebrated wirldwide, but
also the sharing of new ideas and skills. One can simply tune in to the radio station TransRap to hear
hip hop from167 different countries. On any given day one can listen to Hindi rap, Japanese rap or
Cherokee rap. For instance, in Italy, hip hop music is performed in the local dialect and according to
a New York Times article, "Nearly 50 percent of all Italians still speak in dialect, at least within the
family, and the musicality of most dialects adapted well to the rhyme and cadence of rap." Much of
borrowed hip hop culture is infused with the local culture and regional styles. Although it is possible
for globalization to create homogenization, in the case of hip hop music, it has done the opposite
and instead created something more akin to cultural hybridization. According to Jan Nederveen
Pieterse in his book Globalization and Culture: Global Melange he believes that globalization leads
to more cultural diversity through cultural hybridization. According to

Rap Music Influence On American Culture
Music is a part of the American culture that has been around for many years. It allows American's to
express themselves and share their talents with others. Every genre of music is a reflection of the
previous one, allowing there to be multiple divisions of the music world. Halfway through the 19th
century, music took a different route becoming the start of something new. By the 1960s, R&B,
Hip–Hop, and Rap evolved in the American culture by presenting music that covers creativity, inner
thoughts, and feelings about society. Rhythm and blues, known as R&B has been an influential
aspect of the musical movement. "The content of the messages in R&B lyrics is deconstructed to
enable a fuller appreciation of how creativity and imagery associated with the lyrics facilitated
listeners' personal and collective political awareness and engagement" (Stewart 196). R&B music
began in the 1960s and is still common ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although rap came from hip–hop, it is rooted from the African tradition of rhyming to a beat
(Richardson and Scott 176). Rap gave the youth a way to voice their unhappiness with society
(Richardson and Scott 176). "America's urban centers...are replete with poverty, police brutality,
drug abuse, educational inequality, high dropout rates, and violence" (Richardson and Scott 175).
Some Americans were surrounded by rap music and attention to horrible conditions, grew a dislike
for it. Rap music started by focusing on the bad conditions in the poorer communities (Richardson
and Scott 188). It sparked a change, becoming a controversy because of its newly, explicit lyrics
(Richardson and Scott 176). It went from old school rap to new school rap. Rap is the most favored
genre of music today (Leach 11). Rap music came with many concerns and opinions about what was
being expressed. This shows that this genre of music has made it a long way from when it

Hip Hop Dance And The Entertainment Industry
Hip–Hop Dance and the Entertainment Industry Over the course of this semester we have studied
Ballet, Modern, and World dance genres. First of I have nothing against those genres of dance, but
the type of dance that interests me is Hip–Hop dance. In this paper, I am going to discuss the
relationship of hip–hop dance and the entertainment industry today. I will talk about shows, movies,
and celebrities of their relationship with the hip–hop dance culture. I will also discuss how the
subject of the entertainment affects the dance, and even how it affects the actual dancer. In the next
paragraph, I will discuss the relationship with hip–hop shows, and the entertainment industry.
Throughout the 2000's there has been many shows that have been involved with the music and
entertainment industry. But there has not been many related to hip–hop dance, and its culture. One
show that became popular in the United States is Americas Best Dance Crew. This show brought
hip–hop dance to a whole new level regarding the entertainment industry. The show started in 2008,
and has had eight seasons on MTV. MTV is normally for the music and the reality TV so this show
had some questions about premiering on this network. The first season was by far the biggest. The
winner was a group called the Jabbawockeez, they are one of the most well–known hip–hop dance
groups in the world. After winning the competition the entertainment industry came calling. In fact,

Hip Hop and the Civil Rights Movement Essay
The Hip Hop movement was born while the Civil Rights movement was aging.
The Civil Rights movement, at its height addressed social inequalities however, in its old age it
began to demand economic equality – enter Martin Luther King Jr.'s Poor People's
Campaign. Although Black Americans were allowed to eat next to White Americans in restaurants,
and were allowed to sit next to White Americans on buses and enjoy equality in terms of access,
white supremacy went underground and manifested as red–lining, unequal protection under the law,
and a greater disparity between once racially segregated schools that are now economically
segregated. The Civil Rights Movement and the Hip Hop movement are similar, but yet are
different. If ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

pop culture, we see the remaining attempts at avoiding integration, equal protection of the law and
the hip hop generation remains silent.
Due to "white flight", the majority of white Americans moved to the suburbs, while people of color
resided and continued to reside in cities. During the early 80's as a response to Brown v. Board of
Education, magnet schools were created to lure white
America back into the inner city. Culture critic bell hooks says, "a shift in class values occurs in
black life when integration comes and with it the idea that money is the primary marker of
individual success, not how one acquires money" (18). Today, magnet schools require admissions
exams, and are highly selective. These schools receive the majority of funding and produce the
highest standardized test scores, graduation rates and college admitted students. Moreover, during
the Civil Rights movement individuals of a different class resided within the same neighborhood
and this created a mixture of classes providing a wealth of resources.
However, unlike the civil rights movement, the youth that consume the music, fashion and ideology
of hip–hop remain silent on key issues profoundly affecting their daily lives. This is due, partly in
fact to the negation of formal education by hip hop music. In 2004, 50 years post Brown, we have

Hip–hop dance is a popular and energetic dance genre, usually accompanied by hip–hop music. It
has enjoyed popularity among young people all over the world. I have been interested in hip–hop
music and dance for a long time. I can show my love for life and exercise my body by practicing
hip–hop dance. Young people like hip–hop dance because they can invent their own moves. It offers
young people a new way to express their own personalities and emotion. Hip–hop dance also shows
that they feel good about life and that they are not afraid of problems. With a history of about 40
years, hip–hop dance first began in the 1970s in the US (Pabon, 1999). In early times, people in

There are two broad categories of Hip–hop dance: new school and old school. Old school of hip–
hop dance contains several styles that were created in the 1970s and 1980s, including breaking,
locking and popping (Bronner 3). The main element of breaking dance is movements executed close
to the ground. Breaking dance is a battle between several groups. Dancers use different movements,
spins with heads, leg movements and arm movements. They dance to the rhythms of hip–hop music.
Generally speaking, breaking is more suitable for males because it is more masculine and fiercer.
Although popping and locking dances look similar, there are many differences between them. In
locking, dancers maintain a movement for a while. Main movements in locking contain lock, points,
and rollover of the fist. Popping dance takes use of vibration of body parts according to the rhythm.
Main movements of popping include floating, gliding, and sliding, ticking and robot. New school
hip–hop dance includes house, street jazz and other forms that were created in the 1990s (Bronner
3). New forms of hip–hop introduce many elements of other dance styles, such as jazz, Latin dance
and ballet. Generally, they are more suitable for females. Hip–hop has gained popularity among
young people in many countries, such as China and Japan. There are many reasons contributing to
its popularity. Firstly of all, Hip–hop dance allows people to

Youth Cultures ( Educ 817- 001 )
Ariana French Tuesday, November 18, 2014 Fieldwork Youth Cultures (EDUC 817– 001) Dr.
Andorful In order to prove that the Hip–Hop culture's beliefs and goals have changed, I am mostly
going to rely heavily on the culture's music. Hip–Hop music has been the voice of the Hip–Hop
culture since the beginning. It has been an outlet for those in the Hip–Hop culture to vent. To
understand the changes in beliefs for the culture of Hip–Hop I must first distinguish what the
original beliefs were. Then I must look at Hip–Hop music now to compare and contrast. This must
be done using mostly first hand knowledge. This will give an actual inside look on the culture and
eliminate preconception, lies or concealment. In order to find out the original beliefs I gathered six
people who identify as being apart of the Old School Hip–Hop generation. They were all between
the ages of 45 and 58. All of these people were African–American. Four of which were men and two
were women. I then gathered six people within the ages of 18 and 24 who identified themselves as
being apart of the New School Hip–Hop generation. Three of which were men. Two of these men
were African–American and the other was Hispanic. The other three people were African–American
women. All of the interviewees were in the lower or middle social class. I asked questions about the
message of Hip–Hop the role it plays in society. In the survey I compiled, the first question I asked
to the Old School Hip–Hop Group was: What

Hip Hop : An Evolving Youth Culture
Hip–hop is influential on a family 's relationship, the life, and education of the new generation.
When talking about the culture of Hip–hop one should know about lifestyle influence and literary
development. "Hip Hop is Now: An Evolving Youth Culture", is about how hip–hop has been an
influence on society, primarily the youth. Also, how the younger generation treats life differently
compared to the older generation. The article is written by Carl Taylor and Virgil Taylor. "Promoting
Academic Literacy with Urban Youth through Engaging Hip–Hop Culture" is written by, Ernest
Morrell and Jeffrey M. R. Duncan–Andrade. The article is about how hip–hop can effectively
become a part of school literacy. Both articles are centered around the influence on hip–hop. One
tells how hip–hop has been an influence of life, the second article explains how hip–hop can be an
academic influence. On August 11, 2015 hip–hop had developed to see 42 years of age. Though four

such as gospel and classical, hip–hop is still young and developing. Hip–hip is still a youthful

Look at all the money and the famous people." People in the world, especially in America, thought

that most Americans believed that New York City was a place where you know that you have
become successful and are living a struggle free life because that was the disco culture that was
going on. But, the Bronx was part of New York City, and in the Bronx they had a record of about
Twelve thousand fires in a single year and everyone in the Bronx was struggling to keep on

were going through helped create hip hop, they would go to hip hop parties to take their mind off of
everything that was going on in their living situation and thus expanding hip hop. DJ Kool Herc was
known for throwing the first Hip hop party on August 11, 1973, which most people say birthed hip

African American Of The Hip Hop Industry
"Language is a product of society. As society changes, so does language." Because of this, over
time, English speakers all over the world have reinvented language and in some cases come up with
their own very different ways of speaking. African American Vernacular English (AAVE), also
referred to as Ebonics, is one of these variations of American English, most commonly spoken today
by urban working–class and middle–class African Americans. Not only does Ebonics make up an
immense part of African American social life and communication, but also it is heavily used in the
music industry. Its use in the music industry today, particularly in the hip–hop industry, has
definitely had an effect on society's use of language, especially today's youth. Although widely used
by African Americans, many other ethnicities also use Ebonics as a way of communication. The use
of Ebonics has steered many away from learning and/or using Standard English and unfortunately,
this has lead to communication barriers between speakers of Ebonics and speakers of Standard
English especially within academic environments. Due to this, it is extremely important for school
systems to incorporate Ebonics as well as elements from the hip–hop culture into their curriculum to
ensure the success of their students. Ebonics is similar to the English dialect spoken in the American
South; however, many features of Ebonics are used more frequently by black speakers, suggesting
that they have their origins in black

Hip Hop Subculture
A. As discoursed in lectures, preceding literary collections, and films, hip–hop is beyond just 'rap': it
is a philosophy with a history determined by countless inspirational and influential themes and
communities. The term 'hip–hop' was said to have been produced by Keith Cowboy, a rapper within
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and the subculture apart from this genre of music was said
to have been first established through Zulu Nation and Afrika Bambaataa. By now, it is understood
that the elements of rapping or 'signifying' were primarily developed by African Americans in West
Africa and that the music and culture was brought to America around the 1970s. It was at this time

When sampling technology and drum machines became widely available to the public for a cheaper
price, hip–hop began its development into a further distinct entity apart from R&B. These
techniques, and other turntablist methods (scratching, mixing, breaks, etc.) were also influenced
from Jamaican dub music. Within NYC, performances of spoken word poetry had an impact quite
large on the post–civil rights era of 1960s–1970s, thus creating the outcome of hip–hop music. As
time progressed and techniques became more evolved, DJs and MCs sought out to vary and improve
their original styles, branching out the recognition of hip–hop across America. It was also during the
early 1970s that "b–boys and b–girls" made their interruption, dancing in the front of the audience at
popular block parties. Movies such as Style Wars and Wild Style were produced at this time and
truly showed the beginning of a fast growing culture. However, the music of hip–hop had roots

The evolution of dance in the 1980's ranged from various forms of dancing styles. This included
Breaking Dancing, Moon Walking and Hip Hop just to name a few. During this period, Michael
Jackson, also know as the king of pop made significant contributions to music and dance. This

In the 1980's music videos became a part of our culture and also impacted Hip Hop dance during
this decade. As a result, in 1981, MTV (Music Television) was created which was geared toward
teenagers and young adults. MTV became a very important and influential source of pop culture and
entertainment in the United States and other parts of the world. Dance became more popular through
this form of media, and also made other television shows become even more popular such as

Hip Hop And Rap Music
In hip–hop and rap, one of the most important aspects of the songs is the words. It is all about the
meaning and the kind of message or story the artist is trying to convey to the listener. One artist who
has emerged in the last 27 years who exemplifies this part of hip–hop, is George Watsky, or as he is
more commonly known as, Watsky. Watsky, a progressive hip–hop artist, draws upon the roots and
stylings of early and 90s hip–hop, while also adding contemporary social commentary into his
poetic lyrics as one of the more thoughtful progressive hip–hop artists of the 21st century. When
hip–hop artists first began adding social commentary into their lyrics, the zeitgeist of the times was

Since hip–hop was first introduced, there has been a rise in inequality and racial tensions, which has
resulted in more segregated schools and neighborhoods, more discrimination and more violence
than ever before. As a white artist, Watsky added his own perspective on this zeitgeist with his song
"Color Lines (feat. Catch Wreck)." Within his song, Watsky's raps highlight the white person's role
in the formation of this society, with lyrics such as "lynch trees have the same white limbs/ check
out my arms, I look just like him." While with another verse, Catch Wreck responds with lyrics such
as "let's you and I get one thing straight/ the game never been equal, ain't no food on my plate/ I
gave birth to this and you just took it and co–opted it and profited/ and packed it and wouldn't give
me half of it." This back and forth between Catch Wreck and Watsky not only illustrates the divide
in society and the growing racial tensions that has been accumulating for decades, but it also adds in
the style from the roots of hip–hop, known as the dozens. The dozens are a style of rapping in which
one which one verbally duels with another. This duel is clearly shown when Catch Wreck says, "All
you gotta do is get past the guilt/ we ain't living in a house that master built/ if you understand that,
tell your people what you know/ because one of 'em got enough money to pay back what you owe"

1920s, America has been the setting for a progressive "Black Arts Movement." This African–
American cultural movement has taken shape in various genres, gaining mass appeal, this cultural
arts movement has stayed set upon its original purpose and direction, by aiding in cultural identity
awareness. Hip Hop is a genre of music that has really grown the last couple of decades. Its
increased popularity has brought it to the forefront of globalization. There has been a noticeable
decline in the quality of music rappers produce as of 1996. Bishop Don magic Juan in an interview
described hip hop as the inner city, he said the ghetto is hip hop and hip hop is the ghetto.
Gentrification is one of the most commonly used urban renewal practices instituted in major urban
areas. Gentrification has been occurring in Harlem, New York since the early 1980s (Smith 1996). I
believe that it is no coincidence the decline of hip hop in New York is occurring simultaneously with
the prolificacy of gentrification in predominantly Black and Latino neighborhoods. Hip hop is an

How Did Hip Hop Develop In The South Bronx?
Hip Hop is an artistic and cultural movement that emerged in the South Bronx's African American
and Caribbean communities in the 1970's. The movement was embraced by various cultures in the
United States and around the world. It served as an escape goat for the social, political, and
economic turbulence in the South Bronx. With the outbreak of drugs, poverty, and gangs, Hip Hop
became a tool for expressing complicated truths in the world. Thus, Hip Hop destabilized and
reconfigured racial, gender, and ethical issues while influencing social and political movements in

to the Bronx becoming a place for the working class as African Americans and Puerto Ricans

their businesses. By the 1970's, gangs, violence, and drugs pervaded the South Bronx as citizens
hoped for a cultural change. In addition to the urban crisis, immigrants from Jamaica, Dominican
Republic, and Africa were arriving in New York as they filled the streets with different cultures.
This allowed the cultures dance and music traditions to intertwine. Thus, the sound system from
Jamaica, techniques from Spanish music, and African griot formed a unique style and sound that

How Has Hip Hop Changed Popular Culture?
What artistic trend entered our society, changed the world and created many traditions, movements,
and even lifestyles? Hip–hop. This cultural phenomenon is the name for four elements of style
created in the late seventies. The four elements are turntablism, emceeing, graffiti, and break
dancing. Hip–hop gained widespread popularity in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, many view this as
just rap, but to fully embrace the variance between the two is to understand the difference. "Rap" is
the musical sound produced by the art form of chanting rhythmically over a track of music.

In our schools today, we need to start reinforcing the creative abilities of the younger generation and

experiencing a generational shift in the U.S. teaching force. Because of this shift, along with the
increased presence of hip–hop culture within American culture, many educators no longer view hip–

How Hip-Hop Has Affected Our Society
The history of hip hop is so revolutionary and has molded and altered over the years into something
so "unique". The music genius' that paved the way for hip–hop would not be able to recognize what
it has become today. There are many ways that the new hip–hop world has affected our society
which involves fashion, rap lyrics, musicology, technology, crime, the way other races have
accepted hip–hop, and sexuality. Of these, the newly unrecognizable music has dramatically altered
our societies sexuality in a numerous amount of ways. The explicit lyrics and inappropriate music
videos lead to influence the future of our society negatively. Homosexuality, a social norm to
degrade women, and sexual assault are all aspects of how sexuality has been affected by the new
school hip–hop. For starters, one factor of how sexuality has been altered due to the new
development of hip–hop is through homosexuality. Homosexuality was not a social norm until

are more dominant than women. This in tales a male masculine society which leads to sexual
abuse/assault. Hip Hop artists continuously rap about explicit things such as gang rape, snuff rape,
and brutal, forced abortions. For example,"pray that she abort that, if she talking 'bout keepin' it/one
hit to the stomach she leakin it" these are song lyrics from rapper Joe Budden's remix to
"confessions" originally preformed by usher. These songs lyrics suggest a forced abortion upon a
female who chooses to keep a child that has been conceded. These lyrics would be harmless if
society did not choose to conform to what hip hop artists irresponsibly spoke

Hip Hop Influence On American Culture
What movement changed the world and created many traditions, movements, and even lifestyles?
Hip–Hop. This is a name for four elements, created in the late seventies, which includes turntablism,
emceeing, graffiti, and break dancing. Hip Hop attained widespread popularity in the 1980s and
'90s. Today, many view this as just "Rap," but Hip Hop is not just music, it is a cultural movement
that influenced America in positive ways. These influences can be seen in the traditions, fashion, art,
music, and lifestyles of America. It is important to recognize the voice of an otherwise
underrepresented group and how it influenced lifes. The culture of hip hop has a wide variety of
influences that led to its creation. Hip Hop originated in the neighborhoods ... Show more content on

This results from descendance of rappers from Griots. Griots were keepers of knowledge, including
tribal history, and news of birth, death, and war. Many griots spread knowledge through spoken
words just like hip hop rappers (Blanchard). Rappers create songs that spread news of their daily
lives, dreams, and childhoods. They are viewed as the voice of the poor and urban African American
youth who are misrepresented by the media. Rap is more than just saying words on a hip hop beat, it
allows rappers to speak for their community and voice concerns. Rap was well known in African–
American communities, but became prominent in 1979 with the song "Rapper's Delight" by
Sugarhill Gang. Within weeks, rap began topping the music charts which ultimately led to it gaining
the name "new genre of pop music." The first group to bring rap to a mainstream audience, MTV,
was Run D.M.C. Run D.M.C was a trio of middle–class African Americans who came together in
the early–1980s. They mixed rap with hard rock, shaping a new style of hip hop known as "New
School Hip Hop." New School Hip Hop was also pioneered by Def Jam which was a rising record
label for rappers and DJ's. Def Jam introduced many artist such as LL Cool J, the Beastie Boys, and
Public Enemy. The Beastie Boys broadened rap's audience, becoming one of rap's first all white
male band, On the other hand, Public Enemy invested rap with radical black political ideology

Dj Kol Herc Research Paper
Clive Campbell, better known by his stage name DJ Kool Herc, is a Jamaican American DJ who
often threw block parties in the early 1970's in one of the most impoverished areas of New York
City, the South Bronx . At these party's Herc created rhythmic beats by looping the breaks in songs.
Later these same beats would be accompanied by "rap", a rhythmic style of chanting poetry which is
often presented in 16–bar measures or time frames (Thompson). Herc is often regarded as the father
of hip hop music because what started out as just block party music turned into a cultural movement
for many young African–American youths. The music in different eras represents a sort of time
machine into what ideas and problems are wrong with society, thus bringing them to the attention of
the masses and getting them solved. Hip–Hop music took a progressive approach to this by
presenting big issues and problems that have affected minorities and society in general. By doing
this Hip–Hop has resolved many issues in society that were ... Show more content on

New School Music
The question of debate in the music industry will always be "is new school music as good as old
school music?" For many years people have been debating over whether music got better with time,
or if the music industry has degenerated. From smooth jazz songs that make a person want to dance
all night, to rap songs that talk about getting rich. As time goes by and the world changes the point
of view of artists will change too.
For many people the soothing sounds that old school music has to offer and the message of the song
is what makes it so great. To others, that type of music sounds so outdated that it just does not sound
good anymore. A recent survey found that most people born in the 60's, 70's, and 80's prefer old

How one chooses to see how the change in music has come to be is all in that person's opinion. The
life that is today is obviously going to be different than the life that was during a war or the great
depression. It is circumstances and factors like that, which have shaped music. The problems of
today are frequently mentioned in today's music because that is what is happening. For people who
lived through events like the great depression, the music they listened to was all in relation to not
having money, trying to get by one day at a time, facing the reality that it might never end. Music
from today mentions some similarity but it also mentions problems that are current, problems like
race equality, gender equality, and same sex marriage. These problems were not as huge in the past
as they are today. With there being new current events every day, artists from today's music and
artist from old school music have one thing in common: in order to connect with people and have
songs with meaning they need to write songs about things that matter. Many artists have done this
for many years, and even future artists will continue to follow the trend and do the same

Obstacles In Hip Hop Culture

his thoughts are on hip–hop culture. He would say that hip–hop is, "a culture that values rap and
destruction of community values more than it does poetry; a culture that can't stand education. It's
that culture that can't get control of itself." Chris McDaniel along with countless others see hip–hop
as a burden and something that promotes violence (Murphy, Tim). If you ask someone who has

Many people believe that hip hop and violence has a connection and to believe this is almost an
extension of racism. People have free will and the type of music you listen to does not shape the
person that you are.( Merino, Noël.) Hip Hop music is correlated with illegal activities and violence
and these misconceptions one might have may be because of the image hip hop music receives in
the mainstream media. Hip Hop is constantly receiving a bad reputation for the way it is portrayed
negatively in social media as well as the news. But in all actuality hip hop is a positive genre of
music. Hip hop artists who talk about negative issues in their lyrics talk about things such as
violence, sex and drugs. Artists who do this have actually proven to sell better than artists who make
positive music. Unfortunately, hip hop artists who do rap positively, or about political, social or
economic empowerment do not get the same attention and do not make as much money as a result.
Most positive hip–hop artists do not receive the attention they deserve. However, many artists or
groups such as Mos Def, Lauryn Hill or Common are gaining mainstream attention. This attention is
encouraging since they are promoting positive values. Since many of the misconceptions that some
correlate hip hop music and forms of violence is due to the image hip hop is given in the media,
these positive artists are very important. Forgive Them Father by

why we are stubborn because no one listens to words instead society tries to fix our vision by

The Hip-Hop : The Four Types Of Hip Hop Culture
The young men and women of Bronx, New York created the cultural phenomenon called hip hop,
because of the changes in the environment during the 1970s. Some of these changes include
population diversity, advancement in media technology, changing economy, and the citizens' ideas
of their rights. Hip–Hop is a multi–layered art form. It consists of four layers. These four layers are
DJing/Beatmaking, break dancing, graffiti, and rapping. Hip–Hop has become a worldwide
sensation. It can be found in about every city in the world. For example In countries like Berlin,
Barcelona, Paris, Havanna, Rome, and Tokyo the hip–hop culture is embraced. The race of people
who are correlated with Hip Hop culture are usually african americans and latin americans.
Although many of the people who started the phenomenon fall into those categories, there were also
caucasian members who added the momentum of Hip hop. For example Cap who many people
consider to be a graffiti artist legend. Diversity was very essential in the making of hip–hop culture.
Many people consider diversity to be very helpful in environments. "People work harder, are more
creative, and are more diligent when they work with or around a diverse group of people", says
Katherine W. Phillips, who is a professor and senior vice dean at Columbia Business School.
Companies that put a priority on innovation are worth more when minorities hold top leadership
positions. These companies are $44 million more valuable, on average. How is diversity important
to the creation of hip hop though? The Bronx was already a diverse area before hip hop. Some of
these races included african americans, west indians from anglophone islands, and spanish speaking
people from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Honduras, and Panama. After a while many white americans left the
Bronx. Now the American born minorities started fusing their culture together. The two races
connected specifically by the use of music. Rayman Mantila said " After I got to play the conga
drums I had a bunch of friends that were all interested in playing drums, the puerto rican kids in my
area....Everybody would go to the roof and play all kind of rhythms." They created beats with the
constant sounds of drums. These drum beats

Hip Hop : A Culture Of Fashion
The term 'hip–hop' refers to a complex culture compromising of four elements: deejaying, rapping,
rhyming, graffiti painting, and b–boying. These elements incorporate hip–hop dance, style, and
attitude. "Hip–hop originated in the primarily African American economically depressed South
Bronx section of New York City in the late 1970s" (Tate, pg.1). Hip–hop is a culture of fashion,
language, music, movement, visual art and expression. The genre of hip–hop comes with a very
significant history and evolution with its own heroes, legends, triumphs and downfalls. "Real" hip–
hop is often stressed in the 21st century due to what is being passed off as hip hop, and it is often
made clear that just because one takes a hip hop class, or listens to hip–hop music, does not mean
they conform to the true immersion of hip–hop culture. Therefore, "real" hip–hop encapsulates the
true essence of hip–hop culture, untarnished by impurities such as rapacious record labels, and
vapid, materialistic subject matter. Due to the background of how and where hip–hop first emerged,
the African American culture often feel responsible to protect what is for them, and to protect the
culture of hip–hop entirely. Boyd states that even though hip–hop as a culture was created as a

to another form of urbanization and popularity"(Boyd, 79). However, in the two movies being

people started a sort of b–boying. Their dancing was called "Good Foot" from James Brown's record
of the same name. The Good Foot was the first freestyle dance that incorporated moves involving

other kinds of dancing that the first question people ask when they see it is: "Where did these kids

writing. Before hip–hop it was used as a political expression for different gangs. Now, many people
use it as a way to bring their words to life. It carries meaning and expression of thoughts and ideas.
It holds feeling and energy. It holds a strength and assortment that not just the artist can see. It
carries independence, motive and inspiration. Not everyone can understand what it beholds. It

How Hip Hop Affects Society Essay
It has been 30 years since Hip–Hop was first "introduced" to the world. Whether it be fashion or
politics, this musical genre/culture plays a huge role in everyday life and has generated billions of
dollars across the globe. In this paper I will be discussing when, where, and how Hip–Hop was
created, "old school Hip–Hop, "Hip–Hop's Golden Age", "Hardcore rap" "Gangsta rap", "G–Funk",
21st century Hip–Hop, and how Hip–Hop affects society. First, we must take note that all African
American music, including Jazz, R&B, and Hip–Hop, descended from Africa. When slaves were
brought over to America, their culture and traditions were brought along with them. This included
the ancient tribal rhythms and musical traditions that took place among the griots of West Africa.
These African traditions of tribal rhythms and chants led to become more than what anyone
expected. According to RM Hip Hop Magazine in 1986, it is stated that "Rapping, the rhythmic use
of spoken or semi sung lyrics grew from its roots in the tribal chants and the plantation work songs
to become, an integral part of black resistance to an oppressive white society." Chants and songs
gave African Americans a sense of freedom and expression, something that was very much needed
during the times of slavery. Eventually these chants and rhythms led to create the musical genres of
the blues and urban jazz. During the late 1960s and 1970s, Toasting–which is the act of talking or

Hip hop is one of the most prominent component in life and culture today. Today, it is often
affiliated as being a musical genre and style that is debatably the leading factor in music today. But
hip hop is far more than that. It is a culture and a way life. It has helped form most what we know
today. It has greatly influenced many ways that we choose to define ourselves. Clothing styles, all
forms of art media, storytelling, and many other canvases that we typically use in our everyday life
has been tremendously impacted the culture form of hip hop, and this trend is on a steady constant
growth.
Hip hop is the most prominent and notorious styles, especially among the black community. Over
time it has rapidly grown to what we know it as today. Hip has not only taken of form of its own
though, it also greatly influences other genres and forms in many ways. But the big questions are,
what is the start for hip hop? What were hip hop's influence(s) and where is it derived? What is the
meaning hip hop? What is it trying to show/tell? And how did it come about? Not to many people
know the true origins of hip hop and what it is meant to mean. Most people also don't know how
great of an influence this style and culture really had on other styles. Hip hop paved the way for
almost anything we know of today and its influence has only grown even further over time.
I will review how the modern genres of blues, ragtime, Jazz, R 'n 'B, Soul or Electro, etc. were

Hip Hop : The Rise Of The Post Hip Rap Generation
Molefi Asante is the author of It's Bigger than Hip–Hop: The Rise of the Post Hip–Hop Generation.
In this article, Asante predicts that the post–hip–hop generation will embrace social justice issues
including women's rights, gay's rights, and the anti–war movement. To challenge these stereotypes,
Asante speaks to the personification of the African–American ghetto and the need to stop glorifying
black suffering. For Asante, the post–hip–hop generation no longer expects hip–hop to mobilize
disenfranchised youth. Asante states, "The post–hip–hop generation shouldn't wait for mainstream
musicians to say what needs to be said...No movement is about beats and rhythms.... it must be
bigger than hip–hop." Because hip–hop is controlled by corporations, Asante says hip–hop will
never be the focus of political change. Asante argues that "old white men" have dictated hip–hop,
and by extension the actions of black youth, since 1991. "Allowing white executives, not from the
hip–hop culture, to control and dictate the culture is tragic because the music, and ultimately the
culture, as we can see today, has not only lost its edge, but its sense of rebellion and black
movement– the very principles upon which it was founded." Asante calls for the rise of "artivism," a
new social movement that uses art to improve community police relations, failing schools and the
criminal justice system. Asante encourages the post–hip–hop generation to unite with
Latino/Immigration Rights and Black Civil Rights

Hip Hop Culture And Music On Youth
The controversial topic of the evident impact of hip–hop culture and music on youth has been
brought up in several interviews, talk shows, debates, articles and even songs. Many perspectives
and opinions, both negative and positive, have been displayed over the many years the culture has
lived. Though having very many positive attributes, hip–hop is known to be a prognosis for
negativity in society such as criminal acts, excessive sexual/vulgar activities and emotional
expression resulting in other negative outcomes. The social and psychological problems of this topic
has surfaced and been explored by various people, now on a more serious caliber. Hip–Hop 's
History The music genre and underground urban movement known as hip–hop was originated in the
1970s in South Bronx in the city of New York. Hip–hop music consists of rhythmic and rhyming
lyrics, accompanied by a similar rhythmic beat or melody. Hip–hop 's name is credited, by many
hip–hop artists, to Keith Cowboy, a rapper from the then popular group Sugarhill Gang. The
Sugarhill Gang was an independent African – American owned label that released the first ever rap
record, "Rapper 's Delight." Cowboy, along with his fellow group members, would chant the words
"hip" and "hop" at concerts with the audience which began the trend of hip hop. Artist Afrika
Bambaataa was once asked in an interview why was the name "hip–hop" chosen for the genre; he
replied "This is hip and when you feel that music you gotta hop to it, so

Essay On Analysis Of Hip-Hop And Youth Culture

  • 1. Essay on Analysis of Hip-Hop and Youth Culture Analysis of Hip–Hop and Youth Culture Throughout the last twenty–five years, a new form of expression has continued to evolve. Hip–Hop, once limited to urban music and dance has become a widespread form of communication exhibited and enjoyed by young people throughout the world. Hip–Hop is no longer limited to rap music and break dancing; today it represents a multi–billion dollar industry that influences everything from fashion to prime– time television programming, professional sports, mass media marketing and advertising. Today Hip–Hop is becoming a way of life, a culture that is intricately woven into every aspect of young people's daily lives. We may not necessarily be consciously aware of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the early days, Hip–Hop was primarily related to the rhyming, rhythmic spoken word art form known as rapping. Rapping is, in fact, not a new method of creative expression. The ease with which young people can participate in this form of creativity seems to have helped the phenomenal growth of this genre of music and expression. Review of rap music lyrics and styling from the early to mid–1970's, when Hip–Hop began, reveals several aspects of the musical genre that appear to have had significant appeal to young people, particularly those in urban communities. There has never been one all–inclusive form of rap music. It covers a broad range of ideas, styling and techniques that are unique to specific demographic areas, geographic regions and territories and locales. The following comprises some of the hallmarks of early rap music: * Simple yet dominant percussive patterns * Limited reliance on traditional musical systems of chord, verse, chorus and other formal and/or traditional methods of Western musical structure * Non–traditional utilisation of musical instruments including ... • 2. Essay on The Globalization of Hip Hop Music According to Wikipedia, Hip–hop music, also called rap music, is a musical genre consisting of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching, breaking/dancing, and graffiti writing. Hip hop is also characterized by these other elements: sampling (or synthesis), and beatboxing. Hip hop music developed from party DJ's mixing and remixing popular music that was already out. This music was usually from the funk, soul and disco genre. It began during the 1970's in the Bronx in New York City and very popular among African Americans. Spoken hip hop music is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to a paper by David Galenson titled The Globalization of Advanced Art in the Twentieth Century, "Globalization involves not only the movement of goods, but also the movement of people and ideas. For advanced art, a central element of globalization has been the spread of important innovations – the geographic diffusion of new techniques and styles." So, according to Galenson, the globalization of hip hop is not just about the music or the style being celebrated wirldwide, but also the sharing of new ideas and skills. One can simply tune in to the radio station TransRap to hear hip hop from167 different countries. On any given day one can listen to Hindi rap, Japanese rap or Cherokee rap. For instance, in Italy, hip hop music is performed in the local dialect and according to a New York Times article, "Nearly 50 percent of all Italians still speak in dialect, at least within the family, and the musicality of most dialects adapted well to the rhyme and cadence of rap." Much of borrowed hip hop culture is infused with the local culture and regional styles. Although it is possible for globalization to create homogenization, in the case of hip hop music, it has done the opposite and instead created something more akin to cultural hybridization. According to Jan Nederveen Pieterse in his book Globalization and Culture: Global Melange he believes that globalization leads to more cultural diversity through cultural hybridization. • 3. Rap Music Influence On American Culture Music is a part of the American culture that has been around for many years. It allows American's to express themselves and share their talents with others. Every genre of music is a reflection of the previous one, allowing there to be multiple divisions of the music world. Halfway through the 19th century, music took a different route becoming the start of something new. By the 1960s, R&B, Hip–Hop, and Rap evolved in the American culture by presenting music that covers creativity, inner thoughts, and feelings about society. Rhythm and blues, known as R&B has been an influential aspect of the musical movement. "The content of the messages in R&B lyrics is deconstructed to enable a fuller appreciation of how creativity and imagery associated with the lyrics facilitated listeners' personal and collective political awareness and engagement" (Stewart 196). Although rap came from hip–hop, it is rooted from the African tradition of rhyming to a beat (Richardson and Scott 176). Rap gave the youth a way to voice their unhappiness with society (Richardson and Scott 176). Some Americans were surrounded by rap music and attention to horrible conditions, grew a dislike for it. Rap music started by focusing on the bad conditions in the poorer communities (Richardson and Scott 188). It sparked a change, becoming a controversy because of its newly, explicit lyrics (Richardson and Scott 176). It went from old school rap to new school rap. In this paper, I am going to discuss the relationship of hip–hop dance and the entertainment industry today. The Civil Rights movement, at its height addressed social inequalities however, in its old age it began to demand economic equality – enter Martin Luther King Jr.'s Poor People's Campaign. Although Black Americans were allowed to eat next to White Americans in restaurants, and were allowed to sit next to White Americans on buses and enjoy equality in terms of access, white supremacy went underground and manifested as red–lining, unequal protection under the law, and a greater disparity between once racially segregated schools that are now economically segregated. However 50 years later with Hip Hop being the nucleus of 3 pop culture, we see the remaining attempts at avoiding integration, equal protection of the law and the hip hop generation remains silent. Due to "white flight", the majority of white Americans moved to the suburbs, while people of color resided and continued to reside in cities. During the early 80's as a response to Brown v. Board of Education, magnet schools were created to lure white America back into the inner city. Culture critic bell hooks says, "a shift in class values occurs in black life when integration comes and with it the idea that money is the primary marker of individual success, not how one acquires money" (18). Today, magnet schools require admissions exams, and are highly selective. These schools receive the majority of funding and produce the highest standardized test scores, graduation rates and college admitted students. Moreover, during the Civil Rights movement individuals of a different class resided within the same neighborhood and this created a mixture of classes providing a wealth of resources. However, unlike the civil rights movement, the youth that consume the music, fashion and ideology of hip–hop remain silent on key issues profoundly affecting their daily lives. This is due, partly in fact to the negation of formal education by hip hop music. In 2004, 50 years post Brown, we have Chicago's own popular producer and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Old school of hip– hop dance contains several styles that were created in the 1970s and 1980s, including breaking, locking and popping (Bronner 3). The main element of breaking dance is movements executed close to the ground. Breaking dance is a battle between several groups. Dancers use different movements, spins with heads, leg movements and arm movements. They dance to the rhythms of hip–hop music. Generally speaking, breaking is more suitable for males because it is more masculine and fiercer. Although popping and locking dances look similar, there are many differences between them. In locking, dancers maintain a movement for a while. Main movements in locking contain lock, points, and rollover of the fist. Popping dance takes use of vibration of body parts according to the rhythm. Main movements of popping include floating, gliding, and sliding, ticking and robot. Hip–Hop music has been the voice of the Hip–Hop culture since the beginning. It has been an outlet for those in the Hip–Hop culture to vent. To understand the changes in beliefs for the culture of Hip–Hop I must first distinguish what the original beliefs were. Then I must look at Hip–Hop music now to compare and contrast. This must be done using mostly first hand knowledge. This will give an actual inside look on the culture and eliminate preconception, lies or concealment. In order to find out the original beliefs I gathered six people who identify as being apart of the Old School Hip–Hop generation. They were all between the ages of 45 and 58. All of these people were African–American. Four of which were men and two were women. I then gathered six people within the ages of 18 and 24 who identified themselves as being apart of the New School Hip–Hop generation. Three of which were men. Two of these men were African–American and the other was Hispanic. The other three people were African–American women. All of the interviewees were in the lower or middle social class. I asked questions about the message of Hip–Hop the role it plays in society. In the survey I compiled, the first question I asked to the Old School Hip–Hop Group was: What ... Because of this, over time, English speakers all over the world have reinvented language and in some cases come up with their own very different ways of speaking. African American Vernacular English (AAVE), also referred to as Ebonics, is one of these variations of American English, most commonly spoken today by urban working–class and middle–class African Americans. Not only does Ebonics make up an immense part of African American social life and communication, but also it is heavily used in the music industry. Its use in the music industry today, particularly in the hip–hop industry, has definitely had an effect on society's use of language, especially today's youth. Although widely used by African Americans, many other ethnicities also use Ebonics as a way of communication. The use of Ebonics has steered many away from learning and/or using Standard English and unfortunately, this has lead to communication barriers between speakers of Ebonics and speakers of Standard English especially within academic environments. Due to this, it is extremely important for school systems to incorporate Ebonics as well as elements from the hip–hop culture into their curriculum to ensure the success of their students. Ebonics is similar to the English dialect spoken in the American South; however, many features of Ebonics are used more frequently by black speakers, suggesting that they have their origins in black ... Many people consider diversity to be very helpful in environments. Phillips, who is a professor and senior vice dean at Columbia Business School. Companies that put a priority on innovation are worth more when minorities hold top leadership positions. These companies are $44 million more valuable, on average. How is diversity important to the creation of hip hop though? The Bronx was already a diverse area before hip hop. Some of these races included african americans, west indians from anglophone islands, and spanish speaking people from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Honduras, and Panama. After a while many white americans left the Bronx. Now the American born minorities started fusing their culture together. The two races connected specifically by the use of music. Rayman Mantila said " After I got to play the conga drums I had a bunch of friends that were all interested in playing drums, the puerto rican kids in my area....Everybody would go to the roof and play all kind of rhythms." • 30. Hip Hop : A Culture Of Fashion The term 'hip–hop' refers to a complex culture compromising of four elements: deejaying, rapping, rhyming, graffiti painting, and b–boying. These elements incorporate hip–hop dance, style, and attitude. "Hip–hop originated in the primarily African American economically depressed South Bronx section of New York City in the late 1970s" (Tate, pg.1). Hip–hop is a culture of fashion, language, music, movement, visual art and expression. The genre of hip–hop comes with a very significant history and evolution with its own heroes, legends, triumphs and downfalls. "Real" hip– hop is often stressed in the 21st century due to what is being passed off as hip hop, and it is often made clear that just because one takes a hip hop class, or listens to hip–hop music, does not mean they conform to the true immersion of hip–hop culture. • 36. How Hip Hop Affects Society Essay It has been 30 years since Hip–Hop was first "introduced" to the world. Whether it be fashion or politics, this musical genre/culture plays a huge role in everyday life and has generated billions of dollars across the globe. In this paper I will be discussing when, where, and how Hip–Hop was created, "old school Hip–Hop, "Hip–Hop's Golden Age", "Hardcore rap" "Gangsta rap", "G–Funk", 21st century Hip–Hop, and how Hip–Hop affects society. First, we must take note that all African American music, including Jazz, R&B, and Hip–Hop, descended from Africa. When slaves were brought over to America, their culture and traditions were brought along with them. This included the ancient tribal rhythms and musical traditions that took place among the griots of West Africa. These African traditions of tribal rhythms and chants led to become more than what anyone expected. According to RM Hip Hop Magazine in 1986, it is stated that "Rapping, the rhythmic use of spoken or semi sung lyrics grew from its roots in the tribal chants and the plantation work songs to become, an integral part of black resistance to an oppressive white society." Chants and songs gave African Americans a sense of freedom and expression, something that was very much needed during the times of slavery. Eventually these chants and rhythms led to create the musical genres of the blues and urban jazz. During the late 1960s and 1970s, Toasting–which is the act of talking or chanting over a rhythm ... • 38. Hip Hop : The Rise Of The Post Hip Rap Generation Molefi Asante is the author of It's Bigger than Hip–Hop: The Rise of the Post Hip–Hop Generation. In this article, Asante predicts that the post–hip–hop generation will embrace social justice issues including women's rights, gay's rights, and the anti–war movement. To challenge these stereotypes, Asante speaks to the personification of the African–American ghetto and the need to stop glorifying black suffering. For Asante, the post–hip–hop generation no longer expects hip–hop to mobilize disenfranchised youth. Asante states, "The post–hip–hop generation shouldn't wait for mainstream musicians to say what needs to be said...No movement is about beats and rhythms.... it must be bigger than hip–hop." Because hip–hop is controlled by corporations, Asante says hip–hop will never be the focus of political change. Asante argues that "old white men" have dictated hip–hop, and by extension the actions of black youth, since 1991. "Allowing white executives, not from the hip–hop culture, to control and dictate the culture is tragic because the music, and ultimately the culture, as we can see today, has not only lost its edge, but its sense of rebellion and black movement– the very principles upon which it was founded." Asante calls for the rise of "artivism," a new social movement that uses art to improve community police relations, failing schools and the criminal justice system.
