2. INTRODUCTION
1. This tutorial is explaining ‘how to’ operating basic operation of
GPSTOOLS.
2. In this tutorial, ‘how to’ operation will be explained with
reference to the actual operations, using typical applications of
this program.
3. This section will explaining the basic law and ‘how to’
operations, with some underlined comment and ‘must be
noted’ material.

1. For system requirements, how to install tutorial, how to initialize
the program etc, see the memo and Install Notes.
If the program is already installed using the following
descriptions, the main menu will be displayed if we type
“gpstools” in Matlab’s command window.

2. To examine the details of the configuration and operation methods of the programs,
see Help. The Main menu of Help is accessible from Main Menu, with option to
access Settings menu. The Help browser is executable from Internet Browser, such as
Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer. Please enter executable file path in Internet
browser to specify which part of Help Browser you want to use. We can change
various things in Settings tab, such as font display, the setting of the text editor and
etc.

3. Close the screen by pressing “OK” button in “Settings” window. Run “Help….” Button to
make sure the Help is working properly.
4. This is the end of Basic Settings tutorial. If you change some values in that topic, they
will be loaded automatically the next time it’s runs because they already saved.

6. 1st Example: Downloading Data for Analysis (1)
If you want to analyze various parameters in GPS, you should download it first. In this
example, we are downloading the following data to be used in some analysis, as listed
below:
• IGS Precise Calendar (IGS Final Orbit/Clock/ERP) File
• IGS Combined Navigation Message File
• IGS Observation Point Data
1. Please start the Main Menu
2. Run “Tools” and “Download…” Menu from the Main Menu, to access the Download
Window, like shown below

3. Choose “Data/Products (Source), then select data type “IGS EPH Final (CDDIS)”, “IGS
CLK (CDDIS)”, “IGS ERP Final (CDDIS)”. Then select Start-End Date/Time as you wish,
then set the Login User Anonymous. After that, set the Local Directory where you want
to store the Observation Data. If you want to get Ready-to-process file, tick the
“Unzip/Uncompact Files” options and “Skip Existing Files”.
4. After pressing “Download” button, the download process should started automatically.
The progress bar will appear. If you want to see the Log File of the Download process,
click “Log…” button. There, the status and list of downloaded files, including the address
of files will be displayed.

5. We are going to check the content of the Files using Management mode. Press
“Files….” Button, there will be listed the download destination directory table. You have
to make sure that the raw observation data is downloaded. If you want to check the
content of the Files, double click one file and you will find new window which is
showing the RINEX explanations of the File, including the Station Name, Ephemeris,
and essential information of that observation files.

6. After downloading the Observation Data, we should download
Navigation Message file. Select “Data/Product (Source) as
Observation Data, then select “IGS OBS Daily (CDDIS)” and “IGS
NAV COMB (CDDIS)”. After that, select the Station of
Observation you desired, by choosing “Stations…..”, then select
“Clear ” button and choose one of the stations. In this tutorial,
choose TSKB (Tsukuba) as one of the receiver stations you want
to download, then click “OK” button.
7. After choosing the Stations, choose Download and the RINEX
data of Observation Data and Navigation Message will be
downloaded. Check the integrity of the Files by double-clicking
the Files.

7. Compressed or De-compressed RINEX File is not
important, especially if you’re using Hatanaka-type
files. If you have some questions about Compressing
and De-compressing, refer to Help section.
8. If you want to change the address of the Downloaded
Data, change it at the Download window, then re-start
the Downloading Window to make sure that the
address have changed. Refer to comments if you want
to check the definition file format and the contents of
the file.
