As part of ACHL's idea on exercise,

whether that is through the lens of how
efficiently and effec vely healthcare is
provided, or from the perspec ve of
pa ents (or their advocates') about the
quality of their care.
12. Decades ago, healthcare professionals used to face
challenges in staying current with the latest
developments in their fields. They had to rely on
outdated textbooks, journals and seminars that were often
infrequent and hard to access. Limits in how healthcare
providers could access emerging science delayed the
translation of evidence to practice and consequently
negatively impacted patient outcomes.
In 2010, Lisa Keckich, the Executive Director, had a
vision to change this situation. She wanted to create a
company that could provide cutting-edge educational
programs to healthcare professionals and improve the
translation of the latest therapeutic advances to practice.
She came to the Academy for Continued Healthcare
Learning (ACHL) with this vision.
From the very beginning, ACHL was committed to
providing high-quality continuing education programs to
healthcare providers. The team at ACHL worked tirelessly
to develop educational programs that were relevant,
engaging and evidence-based. They understood that
healthcare providers had busy schedules, so they made sure
to deliver their programs in a variety of formats, including
live events, online courses, and enduring materials.
Over time, ACHL's reputation grew as healthcare providers
began to recognize the value of their educational programs.
Physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare
professionals started turning to ACHL as a trusted partner
for their continuing education needs. ACHL's commitment
to providing innovative education has made them an
essential part of the healthcare community.
Today, ACHL is a leading provider of CME/CPD programs,
offering a wide range of educational programs on clinical
practice guidelines, emerging therapies, healthcare policy
and patient-centered care. They are accredited by the
Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education
(ACCME), Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education
(ACPE), and other continuing education organizations,
ensuring that their programs meet the highest standards of
educational quality.
The company's mission is to improve patient outcomes
through education. They are committed to providing
healthcare providers with the knowledge and skills they
need to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care. With their
dedication to excellence in continuing education, ACHL has
been recognized as one of the top five CME providers in
2023.
Let's learn about ACHL and its contributions to becoming a
trusted partner for healthcare providers who seek to meet
their educational needs and improve patient outcomes.
ACHL in Brief
Since 2006, the Academy for Continued Healthcare
Learning (ACHL), based in Chicago, Illinois, has sought to
design, develop and implement quality continuing
education activities that positively influence the way
healthcare is practiced and the quality of patient care.
Supported by a staff of twenty-one employees, ACHL
develops comprehensive educational designs reflecting the
multifaceted and globally diverse healthcare environment.
"In our experience, the most successful educational
programs create synergies between knowledge acquisition
and application to practice, considering the complexity of
healthcare delivery and the heterogeneity of professionals
who play roles in improving patient care," says Lisa.
Maintaining Meaningful and High-Quality Education
"At every point in time, from conceptualization to
evaluation, there is one question we ask ourselves as we
develop education—is it meaningful?" explains Lisa. "Our
corporate culture promotes an action-oriented perspective to
seek solutions to problems, weighing the desired outcomes
and implications of our choices with a continual cycle of
ideation-action-evidence-refinement. Following the launch
of an educational activity, we simultaneously celebrate our
accomplishments while assessing opportunities for ongoing
refinement and improvement."
Along with this approach, another critical component to
developing high-quality education is engaging stakeholders
who can partner in full-cycle conceptualization, design and
development of responsive education, considerate of
nuanced learner audiences and their practice environments.
This collaborative model is foundational to ensuring
educational relevance and success.
As part of ACHL's ideation exercise, access to stakeholders
offers first-hand perspectives on what is and isn't working,
whether that is through the lens of how efficiently and
effectively healthcare is provided or from the perspective of
patients (or their advocates) about the quality of their care.
On the implementation side, these partners help the
company interpret and navigate the complexity of clinical
education without oversimplifying or diluting the
educational content. And on the evaluation side, they help
13. define what is meaningful and to whom, guiding the
evaluation methodology by which ACHL measures success.
CME Activities at ACHL
ACHL strives to develop customized instructional designs
responsive to the nuanced circumstances underlying
identified educational needs, but it also works to create
scalable solutions to accommodate different budgets and
appeal to different learner types.

ACHL's Approach to Learning Programs
Like many CPD providers, ACHL follows Bloom's
Taxonomy when considering the different learning domains
and their relevance when establishing educational goals.
The company leverages different adult learning principles
to achieve these goals and engage learners. Often, its
educational programs will span multiple domains, seeking
to achieve higher cognitive learning as well as effective and
behavioral learning outcomes.
“However, if there was one andragogical theory that
underpins much of ACHL's educational philosophy and
resonates for our vision of what CME/CPD can be, it's the
constructivist theory," adds Lisa. "Much of our education is
designed with the expectation that learning occurs through
experience and reflection and we are here to facilitate an
active, optimal process in the context of who they are,
where they practice, and who they treat every single day."
Lisa explains further that this especially holds true when
developing online education, which creates access to a
heterogeneous mix of clinicians, varied by specialty,
discipline, experience, practice setting and geography, as
well as acumen levels. Despite this diversity, providers
often look to measure educational effectiveness considerate
of a "typical" learner within the primary target audience.
Yet when clinicians outside of this narrow audience
participate in an activity, the measures of success aren't
optimally aligned to their role in the patient management
experience and consequently, their educational results may
not fully reflect the impact of the education.
"For these reasons, when we consider different learning
domains in our instructional design, we think about these
heterogeneous learners and the ways our education can
serve them in delivering better healthcare across the
compendium of care," she adds.
Measuring Educational Impact
ACHL uses a variety of methods to measure educational
impact through the lens of improved patient health. "And
while there are some within the industry who continue to
look at how many individuals show up versus whether we
realized meaningful performance improvement through our
education, there are many of our colleagues who have made
tremendous efforts in innovating educational design and
effectiveness measurements, and they inspire us every day,"
says Lisa.
Admittedly, achieving patient-level outcomes can be
challenging outside the clinical practice setting. "For
ACHL's purpose, for those activities intended to improve
health outcomes, we often ask learners to develop their own
action plans where they self-assess conditions specific to
their clinical practice, establish goals and identify changes
they can implement to achieve those goals. These goals
often range from process level changes such as adding an
EMR flag as part of routine practice or hospital level goals
such as lowering lengths of stay or reducing the number of
readmissions," highlights Lisa.
"This approach is rooted in quality improvement practices,
and while simple in design, it creates a path by which
learners can reflect on what they learned and how they
might apply it in the context of their individual practice
setting."
ACHL's Success Story
The long-existing health disparities in the US have been
further elucidated during the pandemic. These disparities
occur across many dimensions, including race/ethnicity,
socioeconomic status, gender, age, geography, disability
status, and sexual orientation. While developing education
to increase awareness around disparities is an important first
step, it is essential to challenge the CME industry to reach
out to their communities, establish collaborations with
diverse stakeholders, and conceptualize new educational
frameworks that systematically improve care and achieve
meaningful and measurable results.
ACHL is immensely proud to be a driving force in working
with individual and organizational partners to develop
education, navigating the complex behavioral,
sociocultural, systemic and policy domains fueling
disparities in care, and offering paths for both incremental
and sustained change.
Attaining Recognition in the Industry
In the last two years, ACHL has won two awards that best
illustrate its market position. The first was the 2021
Alliance Industry Summit's (AIS) Best in Class Outcomes
16. Award for a dermatology-focused program using ACHL's
adaptive learning platform.
The second award was the 2022 ACEHP Innovative Format
Award for ACHL's Pathfinder framework, a translational
practice design that simultaneously addressed deficiencies
in disease knowledge, suboptimal treatment selection,
inconsistent guideline adherence and inadequate shared
decision-making (performing precision medicine) in
patients with ovarian cancer.
Key Takeaway
Managing complex patients in real-world practice requires
evolved problem-solving and analytical skills not easily
honed through the one-size-fits-all approach that pervades
most IME. Technological advances in and outside of
education have created a growing demand and expectation
for flexible learning pathways that can accommodate
diverse learning needs and paces while also being scalable
and engaging.
Learners are tired of wasting time on education that covers
material they already know. Rather, they want to find the
education they need easily, delivered the way they want, in
their limited time. Yet, while the aim of creating a learning
environment in which educational content is provided based
on the need of the unique learner seems simple in theory, it
is immensely complex in its execution.
ACHL has strived to create solutions employing big data,
machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize
learning experiences in a safe, efficient and continual
environment, and this activity was successful in reaching
and engaging diverse learners while achieving higher-level
outcomes.
"At ACHL, we believe education that creates a practical
context of clinical data and/or guidelines not only creates
relevance but facilitates application," concludes Lisa.
While there are some within our
industry who con nue to look at how
many individuals show up versus whether
we realized meaningful performance
improvement through our educa on,
there are many of our colleagues who
have made tremendous efforts in
innova ng educa onal design and
effec veness measurements, and they
inspire us every day.

President and Founder, talks about the transformative
power of continuing medical education with CME
Procedures and embarks on a journey of lifelong learning
that will revolutionize the way you practice medicine.
Following are the excerpts from the interview:
Can you tell us about the history and mission of CME
Procedures, LLC?
CME Procedures was founded in 2012. I’m a practicing
emergency medicine physician assistant and noticed gaps in
education in my field and with my peers. This gave me the
idea of CME Procedures which started as a focus in
emergency medicine and has since grown to all fields of
medicine. Our mission is to improve the safety of providers,
patients, and the quality of the patient experience. Our
accredited medical education focuses on these issues.
Brief us about yourself and your journey to becoming a
part of the company.
I have a management role with a large emergency medicine
group in central Ohio. Working with credentialing, and
onboarding new hires, I saw gaps and needs in available
continuing medical education. Our company started by
filling these gaps in procedures and skills. We have since
grown into all areas of medicine. We provide education to
providers and students.
How do you ensure that the continuing education
activities you provide are of high quality and relevant to
medical and pharmacy professionals?
We have strict standards and a team of medical
professionals that reviews all of our content to ensure it
follows evidence-based medicine and is current with
treatment plans. We are accredited by the ACCME and

What types of continuing education activities do you
offer?
We offer CME that is pertinent to all medical fields,
although our focus is emergency medicine, internal
medicine, trauma, urgent care, and providers that take care
of patients with acute conditions. Our CME ranges from
hands-on skills to case reviews, patient safety, and
pharmacology.
Brief us about the different domains that the company's
learning programs are structured in.
We are the leader in CME for hands-on skills and
procedures. We offer the unique ability to learn skills online
on your own time and pace and have live events for further
learning.
Our online platform is easy to navigate, stores the
provider’s certificates, and allows for multiple-user access.
This allows providers to complete and review their CME on
their own time wherever they want and unlimited access.
How do you measure the effectiveness of your
continuing education programs in terms of improving
patient outcomes?
We can measure the effectiveness of CME programs
through patient outcomes and metrics with some of the
provider groups we work closely with. This allows us to
have access to their safety standards, procedure success
rate, etc. We work closely with several medical groups and
have been able to show improvement across the entire
patient care spectrum with our modules.
We also ask providers to give examples of how the CME
improved their practice and or safety and what barriers exist
that can limit improvement.
What challenges or gaps exist within the industry? How
does the company turn them into opportunities for
growth?
Our biggest challenge was the pandemic. This canceled out
live events for a few years. We are now getting back to live
conferences and hands-on skills.
At the same time, we have been providing online CME for
over 10 years, so when the pandemic occurred, we had
hundreds of hours of education already available for home
use. We also gave thousands of hours of free CME to over
40 schools during this time to help them bridge the gap
when medical rotations were canceled due to COVID-19.
Tell us about a few success stories that the company’s
services have contributed to.
We started a program with our local school system in
Westerville Ohio. This provides access and mentors to high
school students interested in medical fields. We also hold an
annual career and skills day with their Health Care Pathway
students. This promotes excitement and allows students the
opportunity to interact with multiple medical professionals.
The program now has students that are in medical school,
nursing programs, lab techs, physician assistant programs,
and more.
During the pandemic, we worked with over 40 PA and NP
programs and gave them free access to our content for
students to continue to learn when their rotations were
canceled.
We continue to be very active within our local community
and the national medical community. I have recently just
started my elected term as Chair of the Advanced Practice
Clinicians (APC) Council for Team Health, which has over
4000 advanced practice providers.
What would be your advice to budding entrepreneurs
and enthusiasts who desire to venture into the industry?
My advice would be to not be discouraged with baby steps
and to go slow. We were excited when we first started the
company and wanted to grow fast. This at times caused our
quality and standards to suffer. I learned to take a thoughtful
pause and move steadily. Celebrate and enjoy your success
and use that momentum to energize your next steps. Steady
growth allows you to maintain high standards and customer
service.

How Con nuing
Refines Healthcare
Delivery
Health is more than medications; it’s about the healing
hands of intellectual minds and kind souls!
ealthcare is a reputed and noble profession that is
Hdedicated to community well-being. In the
unceasingly developing backdrop of healthcare,
knowledge is upon which every diagnosis and treatment
plan is built. This is possible due to a dynamic education
system that helps healthcare professionals provide quality
care, make informed decisions, and continually adapt to the
ever-evolving landscape of medicine. Continuing Medical
Education (CME) keeps healthcare professionals up to date
with the latest advancements, protocols, and best practices.
It’s crucial to refine healthcare delivery practice and achieve
precision in practice, it’s not just about acquiring additional
certifications, it’s about learning new trends to operate
efficiently.
In this article, let’s explore the significance of CME in
enhancing healthcare outcomes and how it positively
impacts patients and professionals alike.
August 2023|20|www.insightscare.com
24. Endlessly Altering Healthcare Sector
The healthcare sector is constantly evolving with new
research, technologies, and patient requirements. Medical
breakthroughs, new treatments, and revised guidelines are
unveiled regularly. Staying current is not just a choice, it’s a
necessity to stay in the race and perform efficiently. This is
where CME comes into play. Healthcare professionals,
including doctors, nurses, and allied health workers need to
stay updated with the recent medical advancements and
techniques. The primary goal is to efficiently train them. It
ensures that they are equipped with the most recent
evidence-based practices to deliver the highest quality of
care. Imagine a scenario where a medical practitioner is
unaware of a groundbreaking treatment for a particular
condition simply because they haven’t engaged in CME
activities. Within the contemporary healthcare sector, the
prominence is shifting from disease-centered care to
patient-centered care. Patients and their families are more
aware of the healthcare and demands for a patient-centric
approach. Patients expect a personalized approach to their
treatment. CME helps healthcare professionals acquire the
skills needed to provide tailored care, taking into account a
patient’s unique medical history, preferences, and needs.
For instance, a nurse attending a CME session on patient
communication may learn how to effectively engage with
patients, understand their concerns, and provide emotional
support, thus improving the overall patient experience.
Healthcare is showered with technological advancements in
the present day. From telemedicine to robotic surgery,
healthcare professionals need to adapt to these innovations
to offer the best possible care. CME programs often include
training on how to use new technologies effectively,
ensuring healthcare providers stay proficient in their use.
Precision in Practice
Precision medicine is an approach that customizes
healthcare, with medical decisions, practices, and
interventions tailored to the individual patient. CME is the
gateway to achieving precision in practice. CME equips
healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to
create personalized treatment plans based on a patient’s
unique medical history, genetics, and preferences. This
precision minimizes trial-and-error treatments, reduces
adverse effects, and improves treatment outcomes. Staying
updated with the latest diagnostic tools and techniques is
paramount in early disease detection. CME ensures that
healthcare professionals can identify conditions at their
earliest stages, leading to more effective interventions and
better patient outcomes. With the advent of precision
medicine, treatments can be tailored to target specific
genetic or molecular abnormalities. CME keeps healthcare
providers informed about these therapies, enabling them to
offer cutting-edge treatments that have the potential to be
more effective and less invasive.
Through the Patient’s Lens
The benefits of healthcare delivered by professionals who
engage in CME are clear for patients. They receive care
based on the latest evidence, personalized to their needs,
and delivered with compassion and empathy. Furthermore,
patients can trust that their healthcare providers are up-to-
date with ethical and legal standards, reducing the risk of
medical errors and ensuring their safety. In essence, CME
not only refines healthcare delivery but also fosters patient
trust and satisfaction.
Conclusion
Continuing Medical Education is not just a box to check;
it’s a commitment to excellence in healthcare. It’s about
staying current, refining skills, and embracing the dynamic
nature of the field. Through CME, healthcare professionals
can deliver precision in practice, offering patients
personalized, effective, and safe care. As patients, we rely
on healthcare professionals to be our advocates, guides, and
champions in our wellness journey. CME ensures that these
professionals are equipped with the knowledge and skills
needed to fulfill this vital role. It’s a win-win situation:
healthcare professionals refine their expertise, and patients
receive the best care possible. In the ever-evolving world of
healthcare, CME is the compass that points the way to
precision in practice, ultimately improving the lives of
patients across the globe.

THE HEART OF MEDICAL EDUCATION
August 2023|26|www.insightscare.com
29. In order to best understand and address the needs of HCPs
within a specific therapeutic area, we work with groups of
experts called 'CONNECT' groups. COR2ED launched the
1st group in this series in 2014. A CONNECT is a constant
group of International Experts who identify the educational
needs and develop impactful educational programmes (as a
curriculum) within a specific therapeutic area dedicated to a
well-defined audience.
Between 2014 and 2022, COR2ED has created 17
CONNECT groups covering various therapeutic areas. The
first CONNECT group was established in 2014 so next year
we will celebrate its 10th anniversary.
A good indicator that our programmes are indeed of high
quality and relevant to medical, nurse, and pharmacy
professionals is the fact that for most of our programmes, a
collaboration with Medical Societies, Academic Groups,
and/or Patient Advocacy Groups is in place.
These collaborations provide multiple benefits such as
endorsement and validation of the scientific and clinical
credibility of COR2ED's programmes, and it improves the
reach of the programmes – reaching the members of these
organizations. COR2ED currently has over 60 active
collaborations in place, and some of these organizations
have even asked us for support to develop programmes on
their behalf.
What types of continuing education activities do you
offer?
COR2ED aims for all activities to be innovative and tailor-
made for our different groups of learners: not only per
therapeutic area but also different populations such as
physicians, nurses, and patients.
The format of the education activity is chosen based on
educational objectives, target audience, and desired
educational outcomes. The format can be digital (such as
Interactive Patient Case Video, Podcast, Mechanism of
Action Video, Webinar, CME-accredited e-learning or
micro-learning modules, Animated Video) or face-to-face
(such as Preceptorship, Symposium, Stand-alone meeting,
Master Class) but all face-to-face activities have a digital
component to them as well.
As COR2ED aims to serve the educational needs of HCPs
globally, we offer different types of CME credits.
How do you measure the effectiveness of your
continuing education programmes in terms of
improving patient outcomes?
For all programmes, COR2ED measures the educational
outcomes as per Moore's levels of CME outcomes. These
levels measure how much our educational programmes
impact HCP behavior and clinical practice changes.
These measurements are shared with our experts,
collaborators, and other stakeholders in a report
summarizing the reach, engagement, and impact.
What challenges or gaps exist within the industry? How
does the company turn them into opportunities for
growth?
Unfortunately, there is an absence of clear and consistent
guidance from accreditation agencies in Europe, potentially
leading to conflicting requirements for independence,
accreditation, and use of funding when working with
European-based supporters. As COR2ED is an active
member of the gCMEp group, we continue to have
discussions with the main European stakeholders and bring
this issue to the agenda.
In addition, there are still many people working for
pharmaceutical companies who are not aware of the
concept of Independent Medical Education, and they do not
consider it enough in their annual planning. To address this
we make a real effort to educate and explain the concept
and advantages of IME to people working for
pharmaceutical companies.
What would be your advice to budding entrepreneurs
and enthusiasts who desire to venture into the industry?
DO IT! If you get enthusiastic about the idea of translating
often complex scientific and clinical insights into a simple
clinical message that is easy to understand and implement -
then go for it. Make sure you have the correct mix of
scientific understanding, commercial acumen, and an
innovative creative mindset.

Nurturing Medical

Continuing
Education
he landscape of healthcare is ever-evolving and
Thence referred to as dynamic. The process of
education is never-ending. The pursuit of
knowledge is an unceasing journey. The necessity to
embrace the concept of lifelong learning is paramount due
to the hefty demand for medical professionals. Continuing
education in medicine is not merely a requirement for
maintaining licensure; it is the lifeline that sustains the
essence of a compassionate and competent healer. These
medical professionals are healers; they sacrifice a ton to
serve humankind.
In this article, let’s explore the significance of nurturing
medical expertise through continuing education and how it
shapes the journey of a lifelong healer.
The Non-Static Field
Rapid changes in diagnostics, treatment modalities, and
patient care practices characterize medicine today. To
The Lifelong Healer

32. remain at the forefront of healthcare, practitioners must
continually adapt and acquire new skills and knowledge.
The medical landscape is non-static and flourishing; it is a
dynamic entity, and those who fail to keep up will fall
behind. Continuation of Education, termed Continuing
Medical Education, is not an obligation; it’s the passion of
healthcare professionals for medical science. Consistently,
new drugs, therapies, and treatments are developed. CME
ensures that healthcare professionals are aware of the latest
developments and can apply them to benefit their patients.
A proficient healthcare professional is well equipped to
perform the best possible healthcare.
Continuing education enables practitioners to make
evidence-based decisions, improving patient outcomes. It
takes a lot of discipline to continue the learning process;
many medical boards and associations require healthcare
professionals to complete a certain number of CME hours
to maintain their licenses. Compliance is necessary for
practice and a mark of commitment to quality care. The
present education system for medical expertise is all about
updates on patient safety practices and risk management.
This helps reduce medical errors, enhance patient safety,
and protect practitioners from legal issues. As the
healthcare regulations keep changing, the CME keeps the
healthcare professionals informed about the latest laws and
guidelines. A healthcare professional who adapts to lifelong
learning becomes a ‘lifelong healer.’ This term represents a
practitioner who is not content with the knowledge they
acquired during their initial training but continuously seeks
opportunities to expand their expertise. The lifelong healer
is a compassionate, skilled, and adaptable caregiver
committed to the well-being of their patients. These are
passionate souls who are patient-centric and work-driven.
Access to Knowledge
Continuing education in medicine takes various forms to
accommodate the diverse needs of practitioners. With
digitalization, a wave of revolutions has hit the education
sector. Medical professionals can now access courses and
webinars on a wide range of topics from the comfort of
their homes. Attending medical conferences and seminars
provides valuable networking opportunities while exposing
practitioners to the latest research and techniques.
Subscribing to medical journals lets professionals stay
updated with the latest research findings and clinical
guidelines. Healthcare institutions also provide in-house
training and development programs for their healthcare
professionals to meet their CME needs.
Work-Life Balance
The learning process is crucial, but tedious at times, one of
the challenges of continuing education in medicine is
finding the time to learn amidst the demanding schedules of
healthcare professionals. However, with dedication and
effective time management, it is possible to strike a balance.
With the correct strategies, it’s possible to manage both.
Recognize that continuing education is an essential part of
your professional development. Make it a priority in your
schedule. Set achievable CME goals for yourself,
considering your workload and personal commitments.
Focus on smart work. Use mobile apps and digital
platforms to access CME resources on the go. Form study
groups or attend courses with colleagues to make learning
more engaging and enjoyable but take time for self-studies.
Create a mild competitive environment with your peers,
which will be a driving force.
Conclusion
In the pursuit of becoming lifelong healers, healthcare
professionals must view continuing education not as a
burden but as an opportunity and passion. It is an
opportunity to grow, adapt, and provide the best possible
care to patients. Sometimes, this may be tiring and tedious;
only determined and zealous medical professionals can do
this. As the medical field continues to evolve, so too must
its practitioners. Through continuous learning, we can
ensure that the lifeline of expertise is passed from one
generation of healers to the next, constantly advancing and
dedicated to the well-being of those we serve.
