2. Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi assumed the position of Flag
Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command
on February 28, 2023 (Tuesday).
He took the charge from Vice Admiral Ajendra Bahadur Singh
(PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC) who has retired after serving in the
military for around four decades.
Admiral Dinesh took responsibility at a recently held ceremonial
parade at INS Shikra, a naval helicopter base in Mumbai, as per
an official navy statement.
Previously, he served as the Chief of Personnel at the Integrated
Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Navy) before taking
the reins of the top-tier Mumbai-based command.

The President-Elect of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola
Ahmed Tinubu has been declared the winner of the
Presidential Elections held on February 25 2023.
The results of the Presidential elections were announced
recently.
As far as the elections are concerned, two leading
opposition candidates are already demanding a revote in
Africa’s most populated country.
As soon as the concerned official authorities of elections
announced the results, the main opponents Atiku Abubakar
and Peter Obi challenged the court and insisted upon a
second round of elections.
Abubakar acquired the second position in the last vote of
2019 and then also appealed the revaluation of those
results before his lawsuit ultimately was cancelled.

4. NASA Appoints Dr Nicola Fox to Lead Agency’s Science

Clarence William Nelson II, the Administrator of NASA
recently announced the designation of Dr Nicola Fox as the
Associate Administrator for the Agency’s Science Mission
Directorate. Nicola has previously served as the Director of
NASA’s Heliophysics Science Division.
On February 27, 2023, she becomes the first woman to have
been considered for the role of leading the Science
Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington DC, USA,

5. Two-day G20 Foreign Ministers meeting under India's presidency
gets underway in Delhi; Formal meeting to be held on Thursday
The two-day G20 Foreign Ministers meeting under India's presidency
got underway in New Delhi on Wednesday. A gala dinner is being
hosted this evening for the visiting dignitaries.
The formal meeting will be held tomorrow, with External Affairs
Minister Dr S Jaishankar chairing two sessions.
The first session will focus on multilateralism and issues related to
food and energy.
The second session will focus on new and emerging threats including
counter-terrorism and narcotics, global skill mapping, and focus on
global talent pools.
Briefing media, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra informed that 40
delegations and thirty international organisations are expected to
participate in the meeting at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Center.

6. India on Wednesday called upon G-20 Nations to adopt multilateral
action for faster extradition of fugitive economic offenders and recovery
of assets both on the domestic front and abroad. Chairing the first Anti-
Corruption working group meeting of G20 nations in Gurugram, Minister
of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Dr Jitendra Singh
highlighted the problems faced by a country when its economic
offenders flee from the jurisdiction.
He said that the adverse impact of such incidents on a country can be
seen in the effective utilisation of resources, the quality of life of the
citizens, economic growth and overall governance and most
disproportionately affecting the poor and most marginalised. Dr Singh
underlined that India has already put in place specialised legislation in
this regard.
The Minister informed that the Enforcement Directorate has transferred
assets worth about 180 billion dollars to public sector banks that have
suffered losses to the tune of around 272 billion dollars due to the frauds
committed by high-net-worth individuals.

partnership in the education sector forward in the areas of the

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan informed that two
Australian universities will soon establish campuses in the GIFT
CITY of Gujarat after the high-level meeting with his Australian
counterpart Jason Clare.
Remarking on education as the natural mother for all
transformation and partnerships, Mr Pradhan said that both
countries are deepening their ties through two-way mobility to
fulfil 21st-century aspirations.

9. The Government has approved the signing of a contract with
Larsen and Toubro Limited for the acquisition of three Cadet
Training Ships, at an overall cost of 3,108 crore rupees.
The delivery of these indigenously designed, developed and
constructed ships is scheduled to commence in the year 2026.
These ships will cater to the training of officer cadets at sea,
including women, and can be deployed for the evacuation of
people.
The ships will also provide training to cadets from friendly
countries with the aim to strengthen diplomatic relations.

10. Govt approves procurement of 70 HTT-40 Basic
Trainer Aircraft for Indian Air Force
The government has approved the procurement of 70 HTT-40 Basic Trainer
Aircraft from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force at
a cost of over six thousand 828 crore rupees.
The aircraft will be supplied over a period of six years.
The Ministry of Defence said, the aircraft will meet the shortage of basic
trainer aircraft of IAF for the training of newly inducted pilots.
The Ministry said, the HTT-40 is a turboprop aircraft and is designed to have
good low-speed handling qualities and provide better training effectiveness.
According to the Ministry, the procurement is expected to provide direct
employment to one thousand 500 personnel and indirect employment for
up to three thousand people spread over more than 100 Micro, Small and
Medium Enterprises.
The acquisition of the HTT-40 provides a fillip to the Indian Aerospace
Defence ecosystem and boosts efforts towards ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.

11. 19 Chinese fighter planes enter Taiwan's air defence zone, says
Taiwan's Defence Ministry
Taiwan's Defence Ministry has said that it had spotted 19 J-10
Chinese fighter planes in its air defence zone in the past 24
hours.
Taiwan's forces monitored the situation, including sending up its
own air force planes.
Meanwhile, China has said its activities in the area are justified
as it seeks to defend its territorial integrity and to warn the
United States against "colluding" with Taiwan, despite the anger
this causes in Taipei. The Taiwanese government has repeatedly
offered talks with China but says the island will defend itself if
attacked and that only the Taiwanese people can decide their
own future.
