Ashley took this class to learn about educational technologies and how to use them. She learned that she has a reflective learning style and prefers sensory and visual input. She explored games, social networks, and multimedia as a Learning Warrior. These technologies helped her succeed by catering to her learning style. After the class, she wants to continue using strategies like identifying her learning style and utilizing educational technologies both in and out of school. She enjoyed learning about herself and recommends the class to others.
2. Why I took this class…
I decided to take this after I saw this pop on the
class schedule and saw what the class was
about. I have always been interested in
technology and how it can be used in a
educational setting. So I signed up for the class
and was instantly interested in all the different
types of technologies that existed that I did not
even know about up until I had enrolled in the
class.
3. Learning Preferences
I scored a Reflective 3, which
due to the fact that I like to sit
and think about anything new
that I learn because it allows
me to work out how it makes
sense in my head as well as
review so that I know that I
understand it correctly.
I scored a Sensory 9 because I
like to see and hear and
remember as much as a I
possibly can from what I have
was told.
I then got a Visual 5 because I
like to take notes and draw
diagrams for new concepts
and ideas because I like to go
back and review what I jotted
down just so that I can
remember it for a later date.
Lastly, I got a Sequential 1
which I found odd since I like to
know all the steps before I can
fully understand something but
it is still there.
4. My thoughts on Learning Styles
I thought that it was really interesting to have
everyone take a learning styles quiz to see what
kind of learning style they have and I also was
pleasantly surprised by just how many different
aspects to someone’s learning style was. I also
appreciated it because I am someone that has
always struggled with remembering stuff that I
have learned in the past and it was nice to see
how I learn so that I can start to cater to that
learning style so that I can be more successful in
my college and career.
5. Learning Warrior
I chose the Learning Warrior pathway because I
already felt that I had a broad sense of a lot of
technologies that are made readily available to
the public. But I my work has received these
available technologies so I wanted to increase
and deepen my knowledge within certain
technologies so that I could be a leader at work
and help other people learn how to use these
technologies to their full potential within the
workplace as well as in an educational setting.
6. Learning Activities
The learning activities I completed were helpful
and allowed for me to complete my learning
pathway because they were able to allow to
get an overview of the technologies that I
wanted to know more about as well as diving
deeper into what these technologies were and
how they can be used for so much more than
what I had originally thought. It also deepened
my understanding for how learning is pretty fluid
and is different for everyone.
7. Technology #1: Games & MMOGs
The first technology that I explored were Games
and MMOGs. I usually play MMORPGs but I play
pretty sporadically. However, I am a fan of
games of any kind and I really wanted to take a
look at how these things I just considered were a
way to occupy my time can actually be used in
an educational setting. I played MMORPGs
during the semester as well as some tactical and
strategy games so I was able to test my critical
thinking and mental agility.
8. Technology#2: Social Networks
The next technology I decided to explore were
social networks. At first, I thought that it merely be
about things such as Facebook and/or Twitter. But
it turns out that social networks can be so much
more than just girls taking bathroom selfies. It can
also be used as a means to communicate with
other, who might be far away, and connect with
them. You can get tutoring, access to certain
educational texts and even share what you have
learned or completed with other as well.
9. Technology #3: Multimedia
The last technology that I explored was
multimedia. I was really interested in this
technology because I had a lot of online
textbooks and I wanted to learn how to utilize
them. I discovered that not only were my
textbooks ridiculously entertaining to study
because of all of the animations and diagrams,
but that multimedia is basically everywhere in our
school. Between iLearn and more and more
teachers using online textbooks, we are likely to
be using this a lot for along time.
10. Experience w/ Technologies…
I found that learning about these technologies
was super helpful because even as an adult, I still
have a hard time considering the fact that there
are so many new and interesting technologies
that are now readily available that I have to
make myself aware of them. And since there are
so many that are available, I want to able to
differentiate technologies and know which ones
are going to help me succeed in my learning
style, not just in school, but also outside of it.
11. Physiological factors…
I have never really been to uphold a “healthy” lifestyle
because I never needed. I have been healthy
regardless of what I ate. But now that I am getting older,
I am starting to notice that I get tired a lot faster and
tend to feel drained the entire day even if I have had a
full night’s rest. So I decided to change my sleeping and
eating habits. First off, I decided to sleep at 8 hours a
night, no more, no less because fluctuation in my
sleeping times really drains me. I also decided to be
more cognizant of what I was eating so I decided to
always bring food from home, which was full of protein
rather than purchasing food like I have been doing for
the past couples of months.
12. After this semester…
I want to continue to use the learning strategies
that I have come to acquire in this class because I
know that it is going to serve me well in my future
classes. I also believe that strategies that I have
learned will greatly help me in the life outside of
work as well. But understanding how I learn, I can
better assess how I’m going to understand a new
procedure at work or how I’m going to study for a
test. Even becoming more comfortable with the
technologies that I learned about would be great
because I would find a way to utilize them in a
setting outside of school.
13. My Experience…
I really enjoyed my experience within the class as
a Learning Warrior because I loved being able to
use technologies I already know and love in a
different and yet fun way. I would recommend
this class to anyone who wanted to know more
about that technology they have in their home
or to those who just want to learn about what
different types there are. I loved being able to
learn about how I learn and I use these various
educational tools to my advantage.
