This document discusses code-switching between Tamil and English in novels by Sujatha. It provides background on code-switching and examines examples of code-switching between different groups - office staff, friends, doctors and patients, family members, and during sports games. Code-switching occurs for social motivations and reflects the multilingual nature of Tamil society where English words are commonly used alongside Tamil. The increasing use of English threatens the preservation of the Tamil language if not addressed by promoting greater use of Tamil in everyday conversations.
