1. Dear friends,
As we begin a new academic year, I want to share with you news from Miami Law!
As I reflect on the years that I have been the Director of the programs, it makes me proud to say that we achieved so
many of our objectives and more. Let me share with you some of those accomplishments.
In the past five years, we have:
• Created the International Arbitration Program Chaired by world expert and top arbitrator Professor Jan Paulsson;
• Renamed the office, now the International Graduate Law Programs, as well as the programs. We offer two LL.M.
degrees and four specializations:
o International Law LL.M. specializations in:
US and Transnational Law (former Comparative Law)
International Arbitration
Inter-American Law
International Law (General)
o Ocean and Coastal Law LL.M.
• More than doubled the number of applications to our programs and this year have 66 LL.M. students from 24
different jurisdictions;
• Established the International Law Lecture Series – a series bringing speakers from all over the world to discuss
current international law issues facing the legal world from international human rights to international arbitration;
• Created an Externship Program, where students work at a legal department of a multinational corporation
(including Discovery, MTV, Sony and HBO) while earning academic credit;
• Established the Visiting Assistant Professorship Program by which an LL.M. student can be selected to teach at
Miami Law for one year upon the completion of the program;
• Created a Mentor/Mentee program that pairs up graduates with new LL.M. students;
• Increased our alumni engagement and hosted the largest IGLP Alumni Reunion with over 100 lawyers from various
parts of the world from Colombia and Argentina to Germany, Switzerland and the Philippines;
• Enhanced our online presence by having a new website as well as becoming one of the top 15 most popular LL.M.
programs on the LLM Guide;
• Travelled the world from Russia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey to Panama, Brazil and Costa Rica promoting our programs
and visiting old and new friends.
However, these accomplishments would not have been possible without the support of our Faculty Chairs and
Alumni. Special thanks to Professors Keith Rosenn, Caroline Bradley, Jan Paulsson and Bernard Oxman. And a special
thanks to you! It is with the support of our graduates that we have been able to achieve great success.
I look forward to seeing you during your next visit to Miami or on one of my trips abroad!
All my best,
Jessica Carvalho Morris
