developing a digital
skills framework
Digital Skills – the ‘problem’
Students need high levels of skill and confidence
for employment
Academic staff/faculty need skills to provide up to
date learning experiences
Support staff need skills to develop their specialist
expertise
Typical ‘solution’
 Embed digital skills training in the curriculum, formal,
credit-bearing courses
 Professional Development workshops for Academic
staff/faculty
 ‘Competency framework’ produced for support staff,
with skills defined per role/grade
 All underpinned by comprehensive policy document

Editor's Notes

  • #2 All Aboard is a national project undertaken by the 4 institutions listed here but funded by our national enhancement of teaching agency to provide resources for the entire higher education sector.
  • #3 There are 3 main aspects
  • #4 Firstly , faced with the challenge of upskilling academic staff, support staff and students, rather than taking a traditional forma skills framework and certification route we tried to be a bit more imaginative – and dare I say, inject a bit more fun and passion into things
  • #6 Over 60 pre-existing….
  • #8 We got people together, we asked for ideas, online, face to face, by email, or from chats at conferences and meetings of different organisations.
  • #9  We pooled the ideas and suggestions with with existing frameworks and we tried to make sense of them by clustering, looking for associations and possible groupings…
  • #10  We pooled the ideas and suggestions with with existing frameworks and we tried to make sense of them by clustering, looking for associations and possible groupings…
  • #11 This is one way we’ve found to be helpful, for us at least, in navigating our way through this space. Different lines corresponding to broad themes, with stations that sometimes cross-over and others which provide interesting stopovers or detours en route. Each ‘station’ is a topic for which we can build interactive lessons and learning materials and for which we can assess people’s knowledge, skills and confidence.
  • #12 But we can capture the key themes of our framework in a slightly simpler format which is useful when we think about the higher level objectives and attributes of a digitally confident citizen of the scholarly community.
  • #13 At heart then, these are the core ideas, the broad domains of interest that we believe will be relevant to teachers, students, to anyone engaging with digital technologies. These are of course not too different from many of the other frameworks, but what we’ve done, we hope, is make it more accessible, we’ve built it from the ground up and hopefully creating a sense of owership amongst all who will use it. One of the domains though, possibly needs a little bit more explanation and this emerged from the excellent work which Helen Beetham has been doing in updating the UK JISC framework. That is “Identity & Wellbeing” – its an area that everyone has concerns over and which spans anxieties over social media, to data protection, from identity theft to digital addiction, from sense of professional ethics to mental health – issues that are important to us all as individuals and a society.
  • #15 We came up with a simple metaphor of a metro map where each of the six lines corresponds to the challenges and opportunities of living, working and learning in the digital world : Finding & Using information, Being creative and innovative, teaching and learning, and so on , but also being fully aware of the issues around Digital Identity and Wellbeing
  • #16 We provide a simple digital confidence profile tool – because we believe confidence should be the aim of learning – not just competence. (early piloting of a more detailed tool was supported by over 1000 students in one institution alone! )We are producing interactive multimedia learning resources, and a flexible means of constructing short curricula for different groups or purposes, based on what we call travelcards

  • #18 Secondly, we have been promoting and supporting the use of Digital Open Badges -
  • #19 and this has really taken off far beyond our orginal area of digital skills to now embrace all forms of professional development, learning and even civic engagement and work with schools, partents and community. We’ve issued thousands of badges and even the most reluctant and conservative members of the professoriate (for whom we call them not badges, but micro-credentials) have been lured into trying to collect ‘em all! Badge criteria –nned to be significant learning experience and not devalue the currency…we have recommendations for institutions on these issues.
  • #20 The key aspect of digital badges is not so much the little graphic icon, but the specification of the criteria and the evidence that has been used to demonstrate that the holder really has this achievement.
  • #21 Of course, it’s important that people are able to display their achivements and there are many social networks and profile tools which are now Open Badge compatible. One example we have piloted here with academic staff is the Open Badge Passport and here is a real example of a lecturer (in Galway) who has earned a number of Professional Development badges and is able to post this online alongside her publications list and CV. Some institutions, such as Deakin University in Australia have also developed individual profile pages for their students and graduates and here is an example which illustrates what is possible.
  • #22 Thirdly, and this has been a tremendous source of energy and encouragement: fostering partnerships across boundaries – students, staff, faculty, school teachers, school students, community groups and colleagues in other countries.
  • #23 Our Student Digital Champions & Ambassadors schemes have engaged students in our institutions in developing their skills and confidence, sharing their learning with others, producing materials and running events and campaigns (for example on understanding privacy and your digital footprint).   We’re undertaking research including large scale surveys and focus groups. We’ve produced open resources for anyone to use, including starter packs to help anyone or any other institution take a similar approach.. And we’ve been delighted to see our ideas spread – with badging now accepted as the means of CPD for academic faculty in Ireland with a major new project launched last week. And international recognition such as being honoured to be invited to present at the OECD Ministerial conference in Mexico this year launching the Cancun declaration on the digital economy.

  • #27 So the train is continuing down the track powered by enthusiasm and passion, and we’d love you to join us. Thank you
