ABSTRACT
The growth of population is viewed as hurdle to economic growth by all the developing
and advanced economies of the world. But, growth of the population is the strength to an
economy in the form of labour force, members in social and economic institution like trade
union, which increases the bargaining power of the people. Thus, this paper analyses
alternative thinking about the growth of the population.
Keywords: Population, trade union, CHIPKO, APIKO

CONSIDERATE OF POPULATION GROWTH
The growth of population is measured in terms rate of growth of birth rate over the growth of death rate
during a period of time. From the start of feudal system, the free flow of market forces of market
mechanism played a vital role in determining the incentives for factors of production. The recent
centuries of democracy changed the profile of the economic system with the participation of
Government in providing the necessities of life to the masses as well asit provides infrastructure for the
business sector. Thus the role of government as a police state has been changed to welfare state. Hence
the responsibility of the government has also increased in not only providing necessities and
infrastructure but also in controlling and regulating the market forces.
Rapid growth of population is a major trouble to the government as it should provide the
necessities and basic infrastructure. The countries with huge population suffer from acute poverty. In
other words the gap between rich and poor is wider. The stakeholder for the growth of population is
seen mainly among the poor or middle income groups. With the growth of population, the
responsibility of the government has also increased in providing the necessities of life. In order to
curtail the public expenditure, Government creates awareness among the poor and middle income
groups regarding the evils of rapid growth of population. In other words, Government tries to move the

economy from achieving necessities to the self-sustained inclusive growth. Population growth act as a
pull factor and hurdle in moving the economy to the next level, i.e. eradicating poverty due to
population growth is a major challenge to the government.
ALTERNATIVE THOUGHT ON POPULATION GROWTH
An understanding from themythological era, each family should contribute atleast one individual as a
warrior to war their enemies. So a country with more number of families and population will have
more soldiers and warriors to save the country (and vice – versa).
An increase in the members of family may induce and encourage the head of family to earn more.
This in turn reflects in individual contribution to the national development by way of contribution to
the output. According to Adam Smith self-interest under free market economy results in national
development.
An important component of business environment is consumer. The success of any business
depends upon many factors, but without consumers all those factors are nothing. Thus, the number of
consumers for a particular product of a business concern determines its growth.
The whole world can be classified on the basis of religion, social setup, political system, economic
system, income, business groups, etc. For example, a trade union with single digit members may not
have strength; instead members in million and billions may have soundness in their power of collective
bargaining to attain rights.
A religion with few believers may not gain its relevance and strength. Social movements for
protecting environment viz. CHIPKO movement andAPIKO movement gained momentum only due to
its member’s strength.Marxism is regarded as a religion because of its number of followers.
In case of India, t he backwardness in its growth is attributed to poverty, unemployment, resistance
to new knowledge, abundant unutilized resources, etc. As teachers of economics, we believe that, the
reason for implementation of globalization of world economies is the backwardness in India and many
LDCs. Because, many advanced economies have fully utilised their resources especially labour and
natural resources. So, their rate of growth of the economy has reached a ceiling as stated by Robert M.
Solow in his growth model. This ceiling in growth has limited their output, employment and income,
thereby faces crisis very often. Thus, advanced economies like USA have planned and banned
protection policies and supported free trade policy (globalization), thereby any factors and resources
can move with each other. If advanced economies like USA support a policy, all the member countries
of international organisations such as IMF and IBRD are forced to follow their policies. Thereby all the
developing economies have moved from their protection policy to globalization.T his paved a for
advanced economies to invest in developing economies by establishing industries through a policy of
FDI and MNCs. This has resulted in utilization of the abundant labour and natural resources of
developing economies. Now the growth of advanced economies shows positive and they have removed
the ceiling on growth. It is very important point to be noted is that they bring only capital and
technology to the developing economies and use the cheap labour and natural resources available in
developing economies to produce and earn huge profit. Another important thing to be noted is, in
advanced economies, the growth and supply of labour is limited by their population policies. This has
created scarcity of labour in their countries. If these population policies are followed by all the
economies of the world will sure make scarcity of labour in all the countries and will lead to no growth
of the economy. So, thinking that population growth is a trouble to the country is a major problem for
the future economies.
Therefore, Growth of population is not a trouble, but population growth without education and
empowerment is a trouble to the world economies. Thus it is clear that the strength of any economic
and social institution in this globe is supported by the number people who follow and believe in it. In
other words, population growth on the part of government may be a burden as it requires huge
expenditure to provide them amenities, but for economic and social institution it is strength.
CONCLUSION
From the above analysis it is imperative that the Government should take necessary efforts to enhance
the population into potential labour force to support the growth of the economy. In 2020, India will be
the first country in the world for possessing huge labour force in the world. This statement appraises
India because of its huge population.

POPULATION GROWTH: AN UNCONVENTIONALTHOUGHT

  • 1. 761 Dr. J. Mohamed Zeyavudheen and Prof. M.A. Raja Mohamed, “Population Growth: An Unconventional thought” - (ICAM 2016) POPULATION GROWTH: AN UNCONVENTIONALTHOUGHT Dr. J. Mohamed Zeyavudheen Assistant Professors P.G. & Research Department of Economics, Jamal Mohamed College, Tiruchirappalli – 620 020 Prof. M.A. Raja Mohamed Assistant Professors P.G. & Research Department of Economics Jamal Mohamed College, Tiruchirappalli – 620 020 ABSTRACT The growth of population is viewed as hurdle to economic growth by all the developing and advanced economies of the world. But, growth of the population is the strength to an economy in the form of labour force, members in social and economic institution like trade union, which increases the bargaining power of the people. Thus, this paper analyses alternative thinking about the growth of the population. Keywords: Population, trade union, CHIPKO, APIKO Cite this Article: Dr. J. Mohamed Zeyavudheen and Prof. M.A. Raja Mohamed. Population Growth: An Unconventional thought. International Journal of Management, 7(2), 2016, pp. 761-763. http://www.iaeme.com/ijm/index.asp CONSIDERATE OF POPULATION GROWTH The growth of population is measured in terms rate of growth of birth rate over the growth of death rate during a period of time. From the start of feudal system, the free flow of market forces of market mechanism played a vital role in determining the incentives for factors of production. The recent centuries of democracy changed the profile of the economic system with the participation of Government in providing the necessities of life to the masses as well asit provides infrastructure for the business sector. Thus the role of government as a police state has been changed to welfare state. Hence the responsibility of the government has also increased in not only providing necessities and infrastructure but also in controlling and regulating the market forces. Rapid growth of population is a major trouble to the government as it should provide the necessities and basic infrastructure. The countries with huge population suffer from acute poverty. In other words the gap between rich and poor is wider. The stakeholder for the growth of population is seen mainly among the poor or middle income groups. With the growth of population, the responsibility of the government has also increased in providing the necessities of life. In order to curtail the public expenditure, Government creates awareness among the poor and middle income groups regarding the evils of rapid growth of population. In other words, Government tries to move the INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT (IJM) ISSN 0976-6502 (Print) ISSN 0976-6510 (Online) Volume 7, Issue 2, February (2016), pp. 761-763 http://www.iaeme.com/ijm/index.asp Journal Impact Factor (2016): 8.1920 (Calculated by GISI) www.jifactor.com IJM © I A E M E

Mohamed Zeyavudheen and Prof. M.A. Raja Mohamed, “Population Growth: An Unconventional thought” - (ICAM 2016) economy from achieving necessities to the self-sustained inclusive growth. Population growth act as a pull factor and hurdle in moving the economy to the next level, i.e. eradicating poverty due to population growth is a major challenge to the government. ALTERNATIVE THOUGHT ON POPULATION GROWTH An understanding from themythological era, each family should contribute atleast one individual as a warrior to war their enemies. So a country with more number of families and population will have more soldiers and warriors to save the country (and vice – versa). An increase in the members of family may induce and encourage the head of family to earn more. This in turn reflects in individual contribution to the national development by way of contribution to the output. According to Adam Smith self-interest under free market economy results in national development. An important component of business environment is consumer. The success of any business depends upon many factors, but without consumers all those factors are nothing. Thus, the number of consumers for a particular product of a business concern determines its growth. The whole world can be classified on the basis of religion, social setup, political system, economic system, income, business groups, etc. For example, a trade union with single digit members may not have strength; instead members in million and billions may have soundness in their power of collective bargaining to attain rights. A religion with few believers may not gain its relevance and strength. Social movements for protecting environment viz. CHIPKO movement andAPIKO movement gained momentum only due to its member’s strength.Marxism is regarded as a religion because of its number of followers. In case of India, t he backwardness in its growth is attributed to poverty, unemployment, resistance to new knowledge, abundant unutilized resources, etc. As teachers of economics, we believe that, the reason for implementation of globalization of world economies is the backwardness in India and many LDCs. Because, many advanced economies have fully utilised their resources especially labour and natural resources. So, their rate of growth of the economy has reached a ceiling as stated by Robert M. Solow in his growth model. This ceiling in growth has limited their output, employment and income, thereby faces crisis very often. Thus, advanced economies like USA have planned and banned protection policies and supported free trade policy (globalization), thereby any factors and resources can move with each other. If advanced economies like USA support a policy, all the member countries of international organisations such as IMF and IBRD are forced to follow their policies. Thereby all the developing economies have moved from their protection policy to globalization.T his paved a for advanced economies to invest in developing economies by establishing industries through a policy of FDI and MNCs. This has resulted in utilization of the abundant labour and natural resources of developing economies. Now the growth of advanced economies shows positive and they have removed the ceiling on growth. It is very important point to be noted is that they bring only capital and technology to the developing economies and use the cheap labour and natural resources available in developing economies to produce and earn huge profit. Another important thing to be noted is, in advanced economies, the growth and supply of labour is limited by their population policies. This has created scarcity of labour in their countries. If these population policies are followed by all the economies of the world will sure make scarcity of labour in all the countries and will lead to no growth of the economy. So, thinking that population growth is a trouble to the country is a major problem for the future economies. Therefore, Growth of population is not a trouble, but population growth without education and empowerment is a trouble to the world economies. Thus it is clear that the strength of any economic and social institution in this globe is supported by the number people who follow and believe in it. In other words, population growth on the part of government may be a burden as it requires huge expenditure to provide them amenities, but for economic and social institution it is strength. CONCLUSION From the above analysis it is imperative that the Government should take necessary efforts to enhance the population into potential labour force to support the growth of the economy. In 2020, India will be the first country in the world for possessing huge labour force in the world. This statement appraises India because of its huge population.
