Toward evaluating multiscale segmentations of high spatial resolution remote sensing images
1. TOWARD EVALUATING MULTISCALE SEGMENTATIONS OF HIGH SPATIAL
RESOLUTION REMOTE SENSING IMAGES
ABSTRACT
Object-based analysis of high spatial resolution remotesensing images addresses the
matter of multiscale segmentation. However, existing segmentation evaluation methods
mainlyfocus on single-scale segmentation. In this paper, we examine theissue of supervised
multiscale segmentation evaluation and proposetwo discrepancy measures to determine the
manner in whichgeographic objects are delineated by multi scale segmentations. A QuickBird
scene in Hangzhou, China, is used to conduct theevaluation. The results reveal the effectiveness
of the proposedmeasures, in terms of method comparison and parameter optimization, for
multiscale segmentation of high spatial resolutionimages. Moreover, meaningful indications for
selecting suitablemultiple segmentation scales are presented. The proposed measuresare
applicable to performance evaluation and parameteroptimization for multiscale segmentation
algorithms.
