District and Community
Houston ISD, with more than 202,000 students and encompassing 301 square miles within greater Houston, is the seventh-largest public-school system in the nation and the largest in Texas. HISD is among the largest employers in Houston, with approximately 29,255 full and part-time employees. Most HISD personnel are assigned to schools and deliver services directly to students on a day-to-day basis. Its schools are dedicated to giving every student the best possible education through an intensive core curriculum and specialized, challenging instructional and career programs. The district is extremely diverse with the following ethnic student breakdown: 63% Hispanic, 25% African American, 8.2% White and 80% economically-disadvantaged.
The School
Jefferson Davis High School was founded in 1925. Our Motto this year is “Make It Happen”. We have introduced more tracks in our magnet program, and have partnered with non- profits and businesses to support our students in being academically and socially prepared to be leaders. Today, the students are 89% Latino, 9% African American, and 1% other. 96% of the students are classified as economically disadvantaged and 73% at risk. We are a Power-Up School, meaning we are integrating technology into how we do everything, and all students will receive personal laptops in January.

Our Magnet Program allows our students to declare a “focus area” from three strands: Culinary Arts, Digital Media, Audio-Visual Production and Hotel Management. These areas offer our students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in these career fields.

2. Honors (PreAP) and Advanced Placement Courses
Davis offers eleven Honors courses (PreAP) and twenty-three AP courses. Enrollment is open to all students in their first year, however; subsequent PreAP and AP courses depend on academic performance and faculty recommendations. There are no limits on the number of PreAP and/or AP courses a student can enroll in each year. Students taking an AP class are required to take the AP test in May; AP tests are paid for by the district.
