OVERVIEW In this assignment you will put the research and writing skills you have been developing to use. In this assignment, you will write a 3 – 5 page informative essay that analyzes the development and impact of one of the Ancient Wonders of the World. Imagine yourself as a tour guide taking us to this ancient wonder. Share your exciting, the history of the location, and the significance then and now to the people from that area. The question then is, how do you know when a source is good or not-so-good? By definition an analytical essay is founded on an argumentative thesis, but includes informational elements. Review OWL Purdue Tips for Writing your Thesis Statement for specific examples and instructions on developing this thesis statement. Your thesis statement should appear at the end of your introduction paragraph and act as the key to how to read your paper. In the body of your paper answer ALL of the following questions based on your research. You may answer more questions if you think of them, but these are the minimum. Use your evidence to complete this task by incorporating quotations or paraphrasing from your “best” sources. Where is/was the ancient wonder located in the world? Why was it built and did the purpose of the structure change over time? Do remains of the ancient wonder still exist today? What condition are they in? Can people visit the site? What are the significant features of the structure? What is it made of and how was the structure built? Once you have introduced the ancient wonder, analyze its significance in history and now. What did the wonder mean to the people of the past? Does the structure still have meaning today for the people.

What is a literature review?
A literature review is NOT a book review; it is a review of the literature. THE literature, in this
case, means all of the research you have collected. Your secondary sources only. The
scholarship.
So, why am I doing this?
Because good researchers—good writers—do it. You may be tempted to just jump directly from
gathering materials to writing an essay (or you may have been tempted to skip the research part
altogether); however, before you can write an essay, you need to identify a purpose for your
writing and develop a plan for using your sources. You need to synthesize; the lit review is that
synthesis. This is also an important step in proving your expertise before I allow you to edit and
annotate a fairy tale.
So, what am I looking for?
Basically, you are looking for patterns of association; you want to look at the body of scholarship
(the literature) you have collected and decide how it all works together. You need to see the
literature as a body of research rather than separate pieces. The scholarship is written by real
scholars who are familiar with one another’s work and sometimes know each other personally; it
is a kind of elaborate conversation. You are listening to that conversation, waiting for a good
opportunity to jump in.
So, I have six pieces of literature to review, right?
Well, you have AT LEAST six pieces. It will actually be easier to write a lit review of more
sources; eight or ten sources would be a good number. This does require more research and more
time for reading, but the payoff is greater expertise and more to discuss in the review.
Okay, so what do I do first?
First, make sure you have gathered the literature. For this assignment, I am only permitting you
to use the CSCC Library databases to gather your sources. Specifically, you will look at the
Academic Search Complete, MLA International Bibliography, and Literary Reference Center
databases; if these don’t turn up 6-10 good sources for you, then you can search other databases
(and I have posted a video showing you how to do this research, so make sure you watch it). You
are NOT permitted to locate web based sources, even via Google scholar. And I am asking you
not to use books, simply to save time.
And then?
Once you have all of the literature, you should read it and understand it. It isn’t absolutely
necessary to pore over each page of each source—this would likely be hundreds of pages of
difficult reading. Use your reading skills—the first two or three pages usually contain the thesis
and main arguments—the last couple of pages will often contain some kind of summary or
conclusion. Look for important headings in between. I strongly suggest highlighting the thesis
(probably more than a single sentence) and the main points (topic sentences) and any interesting
passages you may want to reference later.

This short story is about a debate about humanity and reason between Cutie, a robot, and humans. This is a primary source, and I plan to use this story to analyze how reason alone cannot be an indicator of humanity. The humans in the story attempt to use reason with Cutie, but it is actually empathy that is required in this exchange rather than reason. Asimov implies through his story that empathy is what builds relationships and understanding rather than reason.
Blade Runner 2049. Dir. Dennis Villeneuve. Columbia Pictures, 2017. The film is a sequel to the original 1982 Blade Runner film. The original film was based on Phillip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? In this sequel, a new blade runner named ‘K’ is tracking down Rick Deckard to find out questions about his past. Both K and Deckard may be androids themselves, but this mystery is never solved. Although K and Deckard may not be human, their empathy as well as the empathy of the known replicants is often more clearly seen than the empathy of the human characters. The film seems to be an indictment of the lack of empathy in people. This is a primary source.
Cortez, Rita. “Multiple Intelligence and the Role of Empathy.” Journal of Educational Studies, vol. 29, no.2, 2015, pp. 10-27. Academic Search Premier. The author of this article argues that the educational system needs to consider empathy as a necessary skill to be taught in schools. Cortez states that empathy is a learned skill just as other more traditionally academic skills. I plan to use this source to support my points about the message of empathy as a learned trait, possibly to support my analysis of the “The Measure of a Man” episode. This could also support my point about the empathy test as a flawed concept in my analysis of Dick’s novel. This is a scholarly source because it is published in a scholarly journal and has a long list of scholarly citations at the end of the article.

The humans in the story attempt to use reason with Cutie, but it is actually empathy that is required in this exchange rather than reason. Asimov implies through his story that empathy is what builds relationships and understanding rather than reason.
Blade Runner 2049. Dir. Dennis Villeneuve. Columbia Pictures, 2017. The film is a sequel to the original 1982 Blade Runner film. The original film was based on Phillip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? In this sequel, a new blade runner named ‘K’ is tracking down Rick Deckard to find out questions about his past. Both K and Deckard may be androids themselves, but this mystery is never solved. Although K and Deckard may not be human, their empathy as well as the empathy of the known replicants is often more clearly seen than the empathy of the human characters. The film seems to be an indictment of the lack of empathy in people. This is a primary source.

The author of this article argues that the educational system needs to consider empathy as a necessary skill to be taught in schools. This could also support my point about the empathy test as a flawed concept in my analysis of Dick’s novel. This disconnect from a steady income, family, and friends, plus the cost of their addiction, may lead to a life on the streets. Once there, the addiction can further manifest and take hold continuing a dangerous spiral. find two advertisements from any source (newspaper, magazine, tv, etc). One will be an example of the ways that the advertisement perpetuates ideas about race and/or ethnicity in a negative, prejudicial, or stereotypical way. The other should be an advertisement that challenges those prejudicial and stereotypical ways. Compare and contrast the advertisements. What ages, genders, races, etc are present in each advertisement (think back to the discussion of social statuses from chapter 5). What message do those statuses send? What key message is being sent by each advertisement? Summarize a thesis statement of 1-2 sentences that wraps up succinctly one message that can be gleaned from each of the advertisements about race and ethnicity. This will be presented as part of your main body, and the discussion should include discussion of many of these topics: socialization, race and ethnicity, prejudice, discrimination, us/them, and norms and/or values. You will need to bring in the social construction of reality, as well.
Then, find two more advertisements. One should include white models, and one should include individuals of color as the models. Challenge yourself to pick them at random without trying to find the “perfect” example, as we want to see what the average ad does. Explain how this example from the media adds to the social construction of our perceptions of race and ethnicity. Be sure to provide ample evidence of how this process occurs, and the role that the social institution of the media plays in the construction of race and ethnicity. Your discussion should include a clear explanation of what the social construction of our perceptions of race and ethnicity is, and how cultural transmission occurs through the media. This will be presented as part of your main body.
For your concluding paragraph, you will bring together a solid conclusion about race and ethnicity, giving a nice sociological analysis.

Objective: The objective for this assignment is for students to understand and critically analyze the multiple pressures on policy makers in Texas as they most listen to their leaders, the governor, the voters (social responsibility) and their own conscience (personal responsibility) in deciding how to cast their vote on a controversial issue.

Use as few words as you can to make your statements. This will allow you more room to develop your great ideas!
Avoid repetition and redundancy
of both ideas and words. This is the issue that I usually subtract the most points for, so take care.
For example, when you edit your papers, make sure that you don’t say “Cool Herc is widely accepted as the originator of hip hop”, and then two sentences later, “As Cool Herc is the originator of hip hop…”. See how these two are the same idea? If the reader already has the information, repeating it just takes up space. Another thing to avoid is using the same word multiple times in quick succession. For example: “I found it exciting to listen to the this music. Eri B. has an exciting tone to his voice. When I hear how he flows when he strings words together, I feel excited.” See how ‘excitement’ occurs three times in three sentences? Here’s another more subtle example: “He used the turntable as a way to switch songs seamlessly, using the scratch method to cover up the different beats that were used in each song.” In this example, the word ‘use’ occurs three times in the same sentence! Because it’s a less emotional word, it might be harder to catch, but it’s just as problematic.
I like to see ‘I’ statements.
I find that turning the focus on yourself (especially when we are dealing with sensitive issues and incorporating personal experience, as I encourage) is a great way to avoid generalizing groups and ideas. If your statement is clearly from your perspective, then I as a reader can empathize with your position. If you use lots of ‘we as a generalized group of people act and feel this specific way’, it makes me wonder what research you’ve done, what data points you have, and how many people you have interviewed in order to have that knowledge.
Going off of the previous expectation:

If you do make a generalized statement about a situation, back it up with details. Show the research. Reference or quote the authors who initially made the observations and put their work into context. If you tell me that Cool Herc is largely agreed to be the originator of hip hop, tell me why and give examples.
For example, something with detail and context would be: “Although Jamaican soundsystem culture is at the roots of hip hop, Cool Herc was the first to create tracks sourced from James Brown, using the funkier, harder beats that we’ve come to associate with hip hop today.” See how this gives specific details and context on either end of the statement that Cool Herc was the first person to make hip hop?

1. Your paper is supposed to be an interpretation of some aspect of the
work(s): in other words, an argument concerning some aspect of the work
based on analysis of relevant textual evidence. Your paper is not supposed
to be a summary of the work, a statement of your opinion about the work, or a
discussion of its historical significance or relevance. Frame your paper as an
investigation of why and how the author makes the argument he or she does
rather than simply saying what is said. Turn your topic into an argument.
2. Give a clear statement of your argument at the beginning of your paper.
3. Unify your paper with a single argument with a logical development from one step of
the argument to the next. Do not make your paper a collection of separate points or
examples.
4. Every time you state that the author states or argues something you should
have evidence to support your statement, either in the form of a quotation or a specific
textual reference. Only quote what you need for your purposes. Try to look at your
quotations as something more than mere evidence, and instead as material that you
can analyze (break down into its parts in order to interpret it) in order to make your
argument.
5. Use clear and simple language, but a formal style. Obscurity is not profundity. Make
sure that you know the meaning of the words you use. You are writing a formal paper,
not an email message. Avoid colloquial or chatty language. Do not use contractions:
not using them reminds you of the appropriate level of discourse for your paper.

With a wealth of sources available on the Internet, it is important to be able to distinguish between good sources and poor sources. The
- 3. question then is, how do you know when a source is good or not-so-good? To learn the answer, review UC Berkeley’s How to Evaluate Internet Sources and the equally excellent Evaluating Web Sites: Criteria & Tools from the Olin and Uris Libraries at Cornell University. . You should also check out CCCOnline’s Library Document on the CRAP (Currency, Reliability, Authority, Purpose/Point of View). Write a 3 – 5 page double-spaced analytical essay. By definition an analytical essay is founded on an argumentative thesis, but includes informational elements. Review OWL Purdue Tips for Writing your Thesis Statement for specific examples and instructions on developing this thesis statement. Your thesis statement should appear at the end of your introduction paragraph and act as the key to how to read your paper. In the body of your paper answer ALL of the following questions based on your research. You may answer more questions if you think of them, but these are the minimum. Use your evidence to complete this task by incorporating quotations or paraphrasing from your “best” sources. Where is/was the ancient wonder located in the world? Why was it built and did the purpose of the structure change over time? Do remains of the ancient wonder still exist today? What condition are they in? Can people visit the site? What are the significant features of the structure?
- 4. What is it made of and how was the structure built? Once you have introduced the ancient wonder, analyze its significance in history and now. What did the wonder mean to the people of the past? Does the structure still have meaning today for the people from that culture? Include a few images of the ancient wonder from today and/or pictures depicting what it might have looked like in use. (Alternatively you may submit your images in an accompanying presentation, but all work including images must be cited in one of the approved styles (APA, MLA or Chicago Style for Humanities). Remember to be very descriptive. You are arguing that this ancient wonder deserves to be put on the top Seven Ancient Wonders of the World list and why, based on your research. Include a properly formatted bibliography in one of the approved formats. You must have at least your three “best” sources in addition to your image sources. Don’t forget all intellectual property must be credited and this includes images.
