Trichomoniasis

2. Definitions
• Yeast Infections: The most common vaginal
infection caused by the fungus Candida
Albicans.
• Toxic Shock: “A potentially fatal infection
causing failure of multiple organs of the body,
most notably associated with tampon use.”
(Seymann)
• Trichomoniasis: “A sexually transmitted
disease in which motile Trichomonas vaginalis
protozoans become established in the
genitourinary tract of men and women.”(Baker-
Blocker)
3. Symptoms
• Yeast Infections: -”Varies; can include abdominal pain, pain
during menstruation or sexual intercourse, vaginal itching, and
burning upon urination.” ( Kalumuck)
• Toxic Shock: “In staph cases, high fever, lightheadedness, low
blood pressure, diffuse rash, redness and irritation of eyes,
mouth, and vagina, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle aches,
jaundice, kidney failure, confusion; in strep cases, severe pain
and swelling at injury site, fever, confusion, low blood
pressure, tissue death (necrotizing fasciitis).” (Seymann)
• Trichomoniasis: “In sexually transmitted form, ranges from
asymptomatic to frothy yellow or green vaginal discharge,
urethritis, vaginitis, itching, red patches on cervix and vaginal
walls (in women) and frothy or purulent urethral discharge,
urethritis, dysuria, and scrotal pain (in men); in congenital
form, placental rupture, premature birth, low birth weight”
(Baker-Blocker)
4. Causes
• Yeast Infection: “Endometriosis, hormonal imbalances, infection, disease,
uterine fibroids, and sexually transmitted diseases.”(Kalumuck)
• Toxic Shock Syndrome: “Bacterial infections with staphylococci
(menstrual cases, associated with tampon use) or streptococci
(nonmenstrual cases, as from injuries, surgical wounds, infections
elsewhere in body).”(Seymann)
• Trichomoniasis: “Protozoan infection transmitted via sexual contact or
congenitally.” (Baker-Blocker)
Causes
5. Prevention
• Yeast Infections: “Some ways in which to reduce the
chance of infection include eating a cup of yogurt daily,
avoiding sweets, reducing stress, wearing cotton
underwear, avoiding tight-fitting clothing, avoiding
feminine hygiene sprays, and using vinegar-and-water
or povidone-iodine douches.” (Kalumuck)
•Toxic Shock:“Frequent tampon changes and
tampon use on the heaviest days of bleeding
should reduce this risk.” (Seymann)
Trichomoniasis: “Safe sex practices help prevent
transmission. People with multiple sex partners
should use latex or polyurethane condoms to
help curtail the spread of this disease.” (Baker-
Blocker)
6. Treatment
• Yeast Infection: “Depends on cause; may include
oral contraceptives(pills administered through the
mouth), corticosteroids, hormone therapy, anti-
inflammatory drugs, surgery, radiation therapy,
chemotherapy, and immunotherapy.” (Kalumuck)
Treatment
•Toxic Shock: “…intravenous fluids, antibiotics,
removal of cause (tampon, bandages or packing), or
surgery to remove infected tissue.” (Seymann)
•Trichomoniasis: “…both men and women may be
treated using a single 2-gram dose of the oral
medication metronidazole.”(Baker- Blocker)
7. Journal
• Prompt: Writeeverything you know about your assigned STDsand about STDsin general.
Before: There’s not much I know about STD’s except for the vague explanation done
in class, but I do know the basics of my assigned STI. Toxic Shock is when females
leave their tampons in for longer than the amount of time suggested, and some
severe cases may end in hospitalization or death. I also know that trichomoniasis is
more common in women than men and is usually abbreviated as “trich.”
After: ….wow. I know a lot more know than I ever thought I could know. Most of these
infections are common and quite mild, most people are usually asymptomatic.
TSS(toxic shock syndrome) is the most lethal, and the least common. It was the most
rampant in the 1970s when the “super absorbent” tampons were sold, but when they
were discontinued TSS cases dropped enormously. This is the infection I knew the
least details about, so it was interesting to learn more about it. Yeast infections and
trichomoniasis I knew a little more about, but it was still amazing to learn about all
these little facts and statistics about them. Such as:
“Some estimates suggest that 180 million people a year are infected with
trichomoniasis worldwide.”(Baker-Blocker)
