Kerrang! magazine cover analysis
1.
2. MASTHEAD
The title “Kerrang”
implies are harshness to
the magazine also shown
by the block font. This
shows the magazine is
for a specific “rocker”
audience. This is also
shown by the “splattered
paint” effect of the font,
adding the imagery of
non-conformity. The
name “Kerrang” derives
from the strum of a
power chord according
to the Kerrang
spokesman,
The black background
makes the writing stand
out behind the main
image confirming the
magazine’s identity and
3. STRAPLINE/SKYLINE
The strapline breaks
typical conventions as
straplines are usually
black, which adds to the
rebellious image of the
magazine. However, the
typography within it is
outlined with black,
allowing the words to
stand out so we, the
audience, can still see the
additional information
well. We are enticed to
buy the magazine with a
“free CD” with well known
bands like: “BFMV, Aiden.
4. MAIN IMAGE
The image shows the bassist from the band “Fall out
boy” . The main image is indicative of his position in
the band as he is seen to be more famous than the
band leader (Patrick Stump) . His stance is
relaxed, and the composition of the shot shows that
he dominates the whole of the Kerrang! (shown by
the tip of his head covering the masthead). This
could portray the physical dominance over this man
has over the musical world industry. His shirt is
orange which matches the general colour scheme of
the magazine. The colour has positive connotations
related to heat, and summer (which matches the
season of the magazine, June). This is also
portrayed by the consumption of the ice cream
showing that life is indeed “sweet” and adheres with
the whimsical nature of the band “Fall Out Boy”.
5. COVER
LINES
The main thing I notice is that the cover lines
are written in all caps (capital letters) which
make the cover lines stand out. This is so
they can provide the audience with additional
information that may entice them further to
buy the magazine.
6. SELL LINES
The main thing about the
sell lines are mainly in caps
which
which make the cover lines
stand out. This is so they
can provide the audience
with additional information
that may entice them further
to buy the magazine.
7. COLOUR SCHEME
The colour scheme are deep reds and oranges
which match the shirt of the main image
character. These colours relate to summer and
are very striking. They also imply the celebration
of life that is so important to the main image
characters’ band.
8. The main thing about the cover mounts
COVER MOUNTS are that they are bordered which make
the cover mounts stand out. This is so
they can provide the audience with
additional information that may entice
them further to buy the magazine.
