Making good decisions is vital to living a successful and productive life. The ability to decide and
choose wisely and rightly depends on the situation. Though we try to be as logical as possible in
taking a decision, sometimes we end up making the wrong choices. So, it is important to understand

(Pettingger 2010). It is an action that occurs in everyday life by every individual regardless of his or

Generating potential solutions, evaluating the solutions, deciding, checking the decisions and
communicating and implementing the decisions were the six areas covered during the quiz (cite).
Decisions made at the strategic, routine, project/non–routine, or operational levels have different

When you are evaluating a decision node, write down the cost of each option along each decision
line. Then subtract the cost from the outcome value that you have already calculated. This will give
you a value that represents the benefit of that decision. Note that amounts already spent do not count
for this analysis – these are 'sunk costs ' and (despite the emotional cost) should not be factored into
the decision.
When you have calculated these decision benefits, choose the option that has the largest benefit, and
take that as the decision made. This is the value of that decision node. Figure 4 shows this

$420,400. We estimate the future cost of this approach as $150,000. This gives a net benefit of

Introduction
Decision analysis provides powerful techniques to structure complex problems, identify optimal
choices, and facilitate communication between the decision analyzer and the person makes the
decision. One of the most important values of these techniques is that they enable decision making
to be rational rather than intuitive or holistic. They provide a framework for rational decision
making in an uncertain environment.
As modern decision analysis has been studied for more than five decades, there has been significant
improvements in the practices used. These methods have been implemented by companies and
organizations and proved to be successful as well as constructive. However, there are also plenty of
examples when the recommendation were not implemented or even if they were, they failed to truly
support the decision maker(s). Kusnic and Owen found that the implementation rate decreases with
the importance of the problem (1992).
These cases, however, enabled scientists detect the major deficiencies of this approach, and helped
them to work out new developments to help overcome these limitations.

not allowed to go out their premises to get an education, do jobs and were not allowed to go out of
