women in the films, it is not clear whether there is any significance to it maybe Scrosese having a
drug problem and these women have something in common like the initial obsession or addiction to

I've always had a particular fondness for movies that made me think. I love long, drawn out movie
scripts that include lots of plot twists, where the movies intent and message is not always clear right
up front. This particular reason is why I chose to evaluate the movie American Hustle. I really enjoy
watching this movie because of the overall story, the characters, and the actors that were cast in this

My favorites were Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, and Robert De Niro. The transformation that
Bale put himself through in order to play this role was incredible. He has a history of gaining and
losing weight for various roles but I had never actually seen this for myself until I watched this
movie. Bale gained 43 pounds, shaved his head to produce a realistic comb over, and changed his
posture by slouching which shortened his height by 3 inches and resulted in a herniated disc.
Jennifer Lawrence was very good in this film. I love how she can immerse herself into any
character, bring them to life, and still have pieces of her own personality shine through. Even though
Robert De Niro's part in this movie was practically nonexistent, he still made a lasting impression on
me. He played the part of a legendary mob boss and casino owner named Victor Tellegio. I felt this
character fit De Niro so well because he has this serious demeanor and at times can look very
intimidating. In his scene, De Niro is sitting down at a pool table with the sheikh and a couple of
other mob bosses as well as Bradley Coopers character, and he attempts to talk to the sheikh in
English. Coopers' character, Richie DiMaso, informs Victor Tellegio that the Sheikh only speaks

Raging Bull, released in 1980, is a sports drama portrayed in black and white that tells the story of
Jake LaMotta and the fluctuation of his boxing career and the personal relationships in his life. This
movie is referred to as one of the greatest films ever made. It is extremely significant in film–
making because it was nominated for several Oscars, and solidified Martin Scorsese as an amazing
director. The movie was directed beautifully and uses many innovative techniques that were not
used in your everyday boxing movie. Instead of showing the action from outside the ring, Scorsese
puts the audience in the ring (Snider).
Raging Bull is a movie that re–tells the story and memoir of Jake LaMotta. The movie begins with
Jake (portrayed by Robert De Niro) practicing a monologue in his bathroom. The scene then
switches to a younger LaMotta in the midst of a boxing match in 1941. This flashback paints the
story of how LaMotta received his first loss. The scene starts off with LaMotta and Reeves
exchanging blows until LaMotta gains the upper hand and knocks Reeves to the mat. The crowd
starts celebrating, cameras go off, and LaMotta strikes a pose and receives his victory robe. The
celebration is quickly interrupted though by the ring announcer's decision to crown Reeves as the
unanimous winner. This creates a huge uproar, followed by a stampede of people and bedlam in the
crowd. Amidst the fight, the scene changes to the Bronx, in 1941. This scene features Joey (Jake
LaMotta's brother) and Salvy (Joey's associate) walking and discussing Jakes boxing career on the
streets of New York. Salvy tells Joey to make Jake 'know that he needs to cooperate and stop being
so hard–headed'. Joey then rebuttals Salvy and it becomes known to the audience that LaMotta's loss
was fixed before the match even started. The scene then cuts to Jake inside his apartment sitting at
his dinner table.
As Jake sits at his dinner table, the audience gets a taste of the emotional and unstable wreck Jake
LaMotta really is. The scene starts by showcasing LaMotta's fresh boxing wound as he un–patiently

After the death of Tommy everything fell apart. Jimmy turned his back on Henry leading to Henry
later "ratting" on the organization. Overall, the plot could be shown as; Henry working his way up
through the system in the Mafia, it also shows his hardships throughout the movie. The movie also
introduced the life of a gangster during that time period, it showed how one day everything could be
fine and the next not so well.
The acting in this film was excellent in my opinion. The three main characters: Ray Liotta, Joe
Pesci, and Robert De Niro all played their roles phenomenally. The film was directed by Martin
Scorsese. An interesting fact I found out was, Al Pacino was offered Niro's role and he turned it
down. I thought the characters played a great job on their roles. Majority of the actors in this movie
had some sort of connection in gangster films. A few of the actors in the "Goodfellas" were big stars
in "The Sopranos" which I found to be intriguing. In all, the acting throughout this film in my
opinion was fantastic. Each actor played their role in a unique yet, spectacular way.

Heat Movie Analysis
"Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if
you feel the heat around the corner." Robert De Niro's famous line playing the criminal Niel
McCauley sets the tone for Michel Mann's Heat. Mann is able to have high–octane action one would
expect from a crime movie while displaying intimacy in the main characters. The combination of the
two is what makes the film a crime drama (even though Michael Mann argues that it doesn't belong
to a genre). That intimacy is what makes Heat memorable. Mann creates the intimacy in a number of
ways: through types of shots such as close–ups and zoom–ins, the score and the soundtrack, his use
of lighting, camera angles, filming locations and use of shadows among others. The utilization of
close–ups and zoom–ins allows the audience to get to know the characters. It shows the wear and
tear on the characters faces. We can see the pain, the hurt; we're able to feel how tired the characters
are from their deep sighs and the dark circles under their eyes. Michael Mann wants the audience to
become as close to the characters as possible. We are introduced to Al Pacino during a sex scene,
that's about as intimate as the character–to–audience relationship can get. The intimacy is at an all–

A Bronx Tale, an American crime drama film directed by Robert De Niro accomplished all the
aspects that correspond to a classic Italian mafia movie. Similar to The God Father, A Bronx Tale
captured communal and family relationships in an Italian neighborhood in the 1950's and 60's. This
motion picture included multiple sub–plots, but had an underlying plot that was concentrated on
towards the end. The plot showed the bigger picture of the film which tackles a controversial topic,
especially in the time period in which the movie takes place. The different sub–plots may alter one's
expectations of the remainder of the movie. Although this film includes many important details of
conflicts, what one can grasp from watching the movie is the conflict between African–Americans
and Italian–Americans. The director purposefully adds a love interest to show a sort of union in the
midst of confrontation. In addition, what seemed to be a competition to dominate as Calegero's
father figure between Lorenzo, his dad, and Sonny, one of the men the protagonist looks up to,

Although their situation makes the reduction of uncertainty a lot more difficult because for
Channing he remembers all the stuff they once did together, but Rachel cannot seem to place any
remembrance on what they were like. She keeps remembering who she used to be before she met

This Boy's Life is a 1993 film adapted from the memoir by Tobias Wolff, a popular contemporary
writer, which was first published in 1989. The film is directed by Michael Caton–Jones and stars
Leonardo DiCaprio as Tobias Wolff, Robert De Niro as his stepfather Dwight Hansen, and Ellen
Barkin as Toby's mother Caroline. The film starts with Caroline and Toby driving away from their
past to Utah, where they plan to find uranium and hope to begin a new life. Their family broke 5
years ago, when Toby's dad married a rich woman and took Toby's older brother, Gregory, with him.
Caroline's new relationship doesn't work out well either; her naïve hope to become richer can't come

I thought this film was very informative and interesting in the way that it showed this based–on–a–
true–story conflict from multiple sides of the argument. Because of this I give it a thumbs up and
would highly recommend it to anyone interested in history. We are able to see the Iberian, Native
American, and the Church's point of view in this clash of European hunger for expansion and slaves
(somewhat fueled by competition) and resistance of the Native Americans to give up their land and

however, his character does a complete hundred–and–eighty–degree–turn and becomes a merciful
and sympathetic man, devoted to the Native Americans he used to sell for a living. De Niro is able

actor's face being the only thing that is highlighted by the light. There are also a few scenes in the
movie that have heavy influences from film noir. The smoke–filled rooms or back alleyways give
the effect of casting just enough light to only touch the actor. It is a crime movie, so if it sticks to the

This distinguishes his character of the hero, from the other two villain characters. At the end of the
movie Robert De Niro's character is trying to escape the country with the girl while Al Pacino's
character is right on his tail. There is a moment when De Niro realizes he cannot make it out with
the girl and in and unspoken stare he leaves. The music matches the feeling of the moment using
long drown out chords creating that sense a wanting and loss. As Pacino chases De Niro through a
field the music stops to intensify the action and set up the final scene. The music fades back in
shortly before Pacino shoots De Niro. The music carries into a high key riff that is repeated with
strings playing four tones slowly behind the keys. The music grows louder adding more instruments
such as large cymbals and carries into the credits. Goldenthal's score was replaced in the final scene
with Moby's "God Moving Over the Face of the Water." Director Michael Mann felt that Moby's
music better represented a feeling of relief, that it was over, that Pacino finally got his guy. At the

There could be a great screenplay and a great director, but if the right people are not casted, the
whole movie can flop. Ellen Lewis, the casting director for Goodfellas, did an amazing job. When

Murdering Billy Batts, a mobster from the Gambino Crime Family, Henry Hill was on the verge of
living the glamoirous lifestyle by doing what had to be done and that was: never rat on your friends

coworkers which spill into a relationship he tries to form and utterly fails. Besides being rejected he
originally seems like he is going down the wrong path, but the sequence of events changes and he

The 1997 Barry Levinson's film Wag the Dog narrates its viewers a story about the successful rescue
of the US President's reputation that has been stained substantially. The President was involved in a
sexual scandal eleven days before the election, according to the film's plot. In order for him to be re–
elected for the second term, extreme measures were taken by a Hollywood film producer Stanley
Motss (Dustin Hoffman) and consultant Conrad Bean (Robert De Niro) to raise the ratings of the
acting President and defend him against his main opponent.
Different reactions were caused by the film by various media representatives across the US. The
film was treated as a prophecy because of the two subsequent events that followed: the sexual
scandal that surrounded Bill Clinton and the military conflict in the Balkans (the fact that the film
highlighted Albania was somehow overlooked). These reactions have provoked a wide discussion on
the subject of "materialization of thoughts" and the interrelation between art and reality. Is it the

Awakened to the Psychological Concepts Portrayed in Film The film Awakenings is an emotional
film that tells the story of a doctor, named Dr. Malcolm Sayer played by Robin Williams, who starts
work at a chronic hospital in the Bronx during the late 1960's. As he examines patients at the
hospital though he comes to observe a good many of them are experiencing the same symptoms of a
being in a catatonic and unresponsive state yet still having the ability to react to certain stimuli. One
patient in particular, named Leonard Lowe played by Robert De Niro, catches Sayer's attention and
he decides to administer a new drug known as L–Dopa in hopes of saving him from his coma–like
state. The drugs works and soon all of the once statuesque patients are reanimated, but only for a

One of the most serious and expensive problems in the U.S. is the addiction of tobacco smoking.
People who are addicted to smoking tobacco are teenagers, young adults, and older adults. The
number of people addicted to smoking tobacco has increased highly over the last 5 years. Social
problems and media are major reasons for this increase.
Smokers are every where with their foggy sphere of cigarette smoke. The large amount of cigarette
butts that could be found in the streets, parks, play grounds, bus stops, and other places is one proof

The movie, The Mission (1986), depicts events in South America, likely in what is now the state of
Rio Grande do Sul. In the movie, a slave trader named Rodrigo Mendoza, played by Robert De
Niro, makes his living by capturing slaves and bringing them to the Spanish Governor's plantation.
There, he catches his fiancée sleeping with his younger half–brother, which causes him, in a rage, to
kill his younger brother. Due to this, he eventually joins a Jesuit mission. After coming into contact
with a group of natives, and being accepted by them, he formally takes the vows to become a Jesuit

The movie often seemed without direction, and, admittedly, failed to capture my interest. The
performance of Ray McAnnally, as Cardinal Altamirano, was probably the best in the entire film. He
portrayed being divided between wanting to help the natives and priests and wanting to preserve the
church in Europe masterfully. Aside from McAnnally, however, the rest of the cast portrayed their
roles poorly, which, combined with a subpar script and direction, led to a film that was forgettable
on the whole.
Historically, as I mentioned, this film offers a different perspective than the one that we had seen in
class. Rather than seeing Pombal's reforms, particularly his views of the Jesuits, as positive for
Brazil, the film shows their impact on the Jesuits in Brazil and the people that relied on them. The
film also depicts the Treaty of Madrid, which decided the boundaries between the Spanish
viceroyalties of Peru and Rio de la Plata and the western portions of Brazil. The film also took place
in 1750, before Pombal had come into power. At this point, the Portuguese crown didn't have a
problem with the Jesuits, which takes away a lot of the reasoning behind closing the mission.
Another reason, the taking of native slaves, doesn't really work either, because, at this point, the
Atlantic slave trade, which brought Brazil a staggering amount of slaves, was in full swing. In these

Similar in theme, Roland Joffé's film, The Mission, portrays an eighteenth century South America in
which there are two opposing colonial forces. On one side there are "imperialist plunderers", both
Spaniards and the Portuguese, who want to get rich and are ready and willing to utilize any method
possible in order to fulfill their insatiable desire for riches including slavery and the massacre of the
natives. On the other hand, there are Jesuit missionaries who desire to peacefully convert the natives

between the life of Bartolomé De Las Casas and a character in The Mission is with Robert De Niro's
character, Mandosa. At one time Captain Mandosa was in charge of massacres of natives and owned

sins by joining the priesthood and helping the mission attain their goals. This has similarities with
how De Las Casas got involved in working for the plight of the Indians.
It can be speculated that The Mission has several sources of influence that culminated in its
