Vehicle Safety Essay
In the recent years, the United States government has been enforcing stricter mandates on auto
manufacturers to create safer vehicles, and on construction companies to create safer roadways.
Matthew Jensen wrote a dissertation for the Graduate School of Clemson University titled, A
Methodology for the Analysis of In–vehicle Operating Data and Design of Intelligent Vehicle
Systems for Improved Automotive Safety. In his abstract, Jensen evaluated the future of vehicle
manufacturing and traffic–related incidents. Of course, every year more vehicles are manufactured,
which in theory means the number of miles driven in vehicles increases. He points out how the
World Health Organization (WHO) found that automobile crashes was the ninth ... Show more

Generally speaking the items taken into account as vehicle speed, RPM, and throttle position as well
as many other parameters. More recently developers to begin using accelerometer and global
positional systems (GPS) to provide feedback to the driver (Jensen). Yet another critical component
of safe driving is the human–vehicle interface (HVI), very similar to the human computer interface/
interaction (HCI). HVI is used to produce sounds, visual aids, and other forms of feedback such as
the haptic steering wheel to alert the vehicle operator of the roadway conditions (traffic, construction
environment, pedestrians). Since automobiles are operated by single individuals, the primary means
of receiving feedback are visual. Since the introduction of HVI "the cost for real–time control
systems decreases" and the new safety features provide information that hopes to improve decision–
making response time (Jensen).
The article describes three formats of in–vehicle feedback; visual, haptic, and audio. Each of the
three formats to be broke down into various systems and functions. Very similar to a database
containing tables, rows, and attributes. In the visual table, there are four rows one of which is the
dashboard. The dashboard contains several aids including gauges, on–board diagnostics, GPS, and
lamps. The haptic table contains the break/ throttle row, were pedal pulsation will notify the operator
of activated antilock–brakes or traction control. Jensen

HOW TO MAKE ARDUINO INTERFACE WITH LABVIEW
What is Arduino? Arduino is a tool for making computers that can sense and control more of the
physical world than your desktop computer. It's an open–source physical computing platform based
on a simple microcontroller board, and a development environment for writing software for the
board. Arduino projects can be stand–alone, or they can be communicate with software running on
your computer (e.g. LabVIEW, Flash, Processing, MaxMSP.)

So we can learn how the arduino hardware is wired and how the LabVIEW Interface for Arduino
(LIFA) works. The Labview interface for Arduino is a vi based API that was written and distributed
by national instruments. The code also includes and Arduino embedded program which must be
downloaded to the device. The program which runs on the Arduino, responds to commands sent on
the USB bus from the LabVIEW program. It then sends back data to the the computer via the USB.
The LabVIEW VIs provided, allow you to read back the analog inputs, control the digital IO lines
and use several other features of the Arduino hardware.

Driver Fatigue Research Paper
Driver fatigue is a common occurrence for those who are driving long distances or driving at times
of the day or night when they should naturally be sleeping. Becoming overtired when behind the
wheel is dangerous and unfortunately highly common in a time where daily activities continue to
move along, despite our need to rest. 1 in 4 people have reported having microsleeps while driving.
A microsleep is a brief moment of loss of attention that results in a blank stare or prolonged eye
closure when someone is extremely tired. This can happen very easily on the road when someone is
driving. The cost and damage of driver fatigue is avoidable, but unfortunately occurs regularly.
Falling asleep at the wheel or not concentrating while driving due to tiredness can result in road
accidents with other cars or objects and even death. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Managers Need to Understand Cost Allocation
Introduction
Managers need to understand cost allocation well for their business operation to succeed and make
better decisions. A number of product costing systems exist, including process costing, job order
costing or activity based costing (ABC) among others (Horngren, Datar, & Rajan, 2012). The paper
argues that while ABC is not a universal solution to all costing issues, it remains an effective
decision making tool, particularly because it prevents cost distortion associated with traditional
costing systems by adopting multiple cost drivers and multiple activity costs. With the research of
the relative literatures and texts, this essay would explain those product cost systems, as well as their
advantages and disadvantages. In addition, this essay would also discuss how the product cost
systems could be proper used by organisations.
Body
ABC should be distinguished from the traditional costing method. The traditional costing method
(particularly the absorption costing) allocates direct costs to the corresponding products while the
overhead costs for each set of products are allocated proportionately according to the proportion of
chosen cost driver (Vazakidis & Karagiannis, 2011). By using the product cost systems, such as
process costing, job costing, and activity base costing, managers can have well understanding about
the cost allocation for their productions, so that they can make better decisions. Therefore, managers
need to proper choice the product costing

Department Of Homeland Security : A Nation We Must Never...
As a nation we must never overlook any threat. With groups like ISIS and other terror groups we
must always be vigilant. One area where we must pay close attention is within our nation's critical
infrastructures. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has identified 16 critical infrastructure
sectors. These sectors assets, systems, and networks are considered so vital to our nation that their
destruction or incapacitation would cause grave harm to our national security, economic security,
and public health or safety (Critical Infrastructure Sectors, 2016). To better realize this areas
importance we will look at the top three vulnerable sectors.
#1. Communication Sector This sector is an integral component to your nation's economy,
operations of all businesses, as well as public and government organizations. In addition, this sector
is mainly operated by the private sector (Critical Infrastructure Sectors, 2016). These reasons are
why I feel this sector is most vulnerable for attack. With the majority of the sector ran by private
companies and the critical nature of this sector makes it a prime area for attack. The chaos which
would ensue due an attack on this sector could be devastating. With the loss of communication our
nation could not function.

Installing A Office Surveillance System
Due to the rapid advancement in technology especially in the security industry, there is a huge surge
in the numbers of company surveillance of the employees and different ways of supervision have
been established. Many companies have installed security cameras in the workplace and have access
to the browsing history and emails of workers. However, there has been an uproar among the
workers lately as they are more exposed to social media and news from different places. More and
more cases of employers overextending their power and control of workers' private lives can be seen
all over the United States. For example, according to the president of Teamsters Local 804, Tim
Sylvester, the metrics–based assault of workers is not anything strange (Bruder, 2015). Indeed, it is
not beneficial to a company to install office surveillance system because it raises privacy concerns
among the workers, causes mistrust between employees and employers, and reduces organizational
commitment. It is argued by some that installing surveillance system in the workplace is
advantageous to the company because the companies need to protect their company assets and trade
secrets. This is because electronic surveillance prevents any intrusion, hacking or negative attempts
to their computer systems. Indeed, Ball (2010) contends that "they want to protect corporate
interests and trade secrets. Email, Internet monitoring and information access control are all
deployed against risks of defamation,

Public Misunderstanding Of "officer Safety" Essay
Public Misunderstanding of "Officer Safety"
How many times have you been pulled over by a police officer, and when the confrontation was
complete you said to yourself, "Boy, was he rude!" or
"There was no need for him to treat me like that." Well, unfortunately, the public is
prone to misinterpret an officer being safe for being rude.
Unfortunately, the actions taken during a "routine" traffic stop which are interpreted as
being rude are necessary steps that insure the safety of both officer and civilian.
Imagine for a moment that you are a police officer on duty. You observe a vehicle traveling 36 miles
per hour on a 30 mile per hour ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These are the some of the procedures which they have published in regards to traffic stops, and
which myself and other trainers have used to train their mobile patrolmen in hopes of reducing their
risk:
Step #1: Park your patrol car approximately 1.5 car lengths behind, and with the passenger's side
headlight even with the center of the violators vehicle. By doing this you allow yourself, as the
patrolman, an ample distance for reaction. By parking off center you also allow a
"hallway" for yourself to conduct business safely.
Step #2: Turn your vehicle's high beams, spotlight, code lights and any other light on your vehicle
on and facing towards the stopped vehicle. This will make it hard for the violator to see where you
are and get a good shot in.
It also allows you to see what is occurring inside the vehicle clearly.
Step #3: At no time do you allow the driver to exit his vehicle. It is safer for him and again puts him
at a disadvantage for completing any violent acts against you.
Step #4: While walking up to the vehicle, look at and lightly press down on the trunk. This reduces
the chance of a hidden person coming out of the trunk and firing on the officer. (This does
occasionally happen.)
Step #5: When reaching the

Use Of Technology For Preventing Drowsiness At The Time
Various investigation show that driver's drowsiness is one of the main cause of road accidents. The
development of technology for preventing drowsiness at the time is a major challenge in the field of
accidents avoidance. The advance in computing technology has provided the means for building
intelligent vehicle system. The purpose of this study is to detect the drowsiness in driver to prevent
accidents and to improve safety on the highway. The aim of this project is to design an Accident
Prevention System which helps in preventing or avoiding accidents.
A real time face detection is implemented to locate driver's face region. A method of detecting
drowsiness in drivers developed by using a camera that points directly towards the driver face and
capture for the video. As a detection method, the system uses image processing technology using
MATLAB to analysis images of the driver face taken with the help of video camera. The captured
video is done, it is converted into numbers of frame of face and monitoring of the face region and
eyes in order to detect drowsiness. The system is able to monitoring eyes and determine whether the
eyes are in an open or closed. This detection system provides a non–contact technique for judging
various level of alertness and facilitates early detection of a decline in alertness during driving.

What is Continuous Process Improvement (CPI)?
Continuous Process Improvement is a process which allows managers to continuously improve the
quality of all kinds of processes like production, administrative, and service within a firm. Since it is
a customer–driven system, both internal and external customers of the firm define and demand their
requirements that are then implemented into the system. The new tools that are required to operate
CPI effectively include :
1. statistical analysis, process analysis techniques
2. group problem–solving techniques

Monitoring critical success factors and cost drivers:
Critical success factors like Return On Investment, on–time deliveries, throughput, customer lead–
time and headcount productivity can all be monitored using statistical techniques (i.e. control
charts). Thus, the natural variations in the critical success factors become important. Moreover,
control charts create performance "bands," which symbolize the natural variation of a process that is
under control. Anything outside the band indicates an out–of–control process and may need further
investigation if it is a frequent event.
Cost drivers of various processes can also be monitored with control charts. A few examples of
factors that affect cost are:

Editing: Revised Conclusion Paragraph vs. Original...
Original Conclusion Paragraph: Because most traffic accidents and corresponding fatalities can be
reduced through effective program development, monitoring, and evaluation, a comprehensive
public policy can save lives. The difference in fatalities between developing nations and wealthy
nations is the clearest indicator that road safety measures and programs do reduce traffic fatalities.
Although expensive to implement initially, road safety improvements go a long way toward
reducing the burden on the medical care system, which is overburdened by dealing with traffic–
related accidents and deaths. Through simply assessing local problems such as unsafe roads;
implementing laws related to bicycle and pedestrian safety or driver education; and providing
ongoing program evaluation, it will be possible to reduce traffic accidents and fatalities in
communities around the world. Revised Conclusion Paragraph: Research shows the number of
traffic accidents and corresponding fatalities can be reduced through effective program
development, monitoring and evaluation. A comprehensive public policy can save lives. There is a
significant difference in the numbers of fatalities in wealthy nations versus those in the developing
world. The difference in the numbers is the clearest indicator that road safety measures and

Driver Fatigue Essay
ABSTRACT
Driver fatigue resulting from sleep deprivation or sleep disorders is an important factor in the
increasing number of the accidents on today's roads. Driving a vehicle involves coordination of the
locomotor system along with the healthy function of the brain. When the driver feels drowsy, it may
unsettle the balance and may lead to erratic driving causing potential accidents.
The main aim of the driver drowsiness detection system is to design a monitoring system that
processes the image to indicate the current driving aptitude of the driver and raise a warning alarm if
the driver is fatigued.

Compages And Disadvantages Of Costing Systems
Costing Systems
The costing systems aid companies in determining the cost of a product in relation to the revenue
the product generates. The costing systems commonly used in businesses include activity–based
costing and traditional costing. Traditional costing system assigns the manufacturing overhead based
on the capacity of a cost driver. For example, the amount of direct working hours required to
produce a particular item. Cost drivers are factors that cause cost to incur, like machine hours, direct
material hours, and direct labor hours. Activity–based costing system allocates cost of
manufacturing a product in accordance to the activities required to produce the particular item. It's
therefore essential for managers to understand the merits ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net
...
For example, in a banking context, the activity of a bank teller is ascribed to each item through
measuring how long each item transaction (cost driver) takes at a counter and them measuring the
number of each form of transaction. In a machinery context for the activity of running machinery,
the driver is often the machine operating hours i.e. machine operating hour's maintenance, power
cost in the running of machinery and labor cost activities.
ABC systems use activities as the main cost objects. The system works on the notion that activities
cause costs, and cost objects create demand for activities. The system is flexible as it relates costs to
customers, management responsibility and processor and not just the products. ABC system applies
activities as the basic cost objects while using the costs of such activities as the building blocks for
compiling costs of other cost objects.
The application of activity based costing system embraces advanced planning, control and
monitoring system that encompasses: activity based costing; activity–based budgeting; activity
reporting; activity–based cost management; performance benchmarking and measurement;
customer/product and sector profitability, business process re–engineering; and continuous

The battle of the trucks as the community puts it. The battle has been a long going trend for many
years now. Two of the most common trucks battling each other are of today are, the Dodge ram and
Ford F series. These two brands of very intimidating trucks might have totally different looks, but
they can both preform very differently.
In fact, let me start off by saying while Ford and Dodge both have the capability to tow over thirty
thousand pounds, the ford out beads the dodge with a maximum towing capacity of 32,500 pounds
verses 31,210 pounds. Though this is not much of a difference, some still do prefer to go with the

Building Organizational Capacity For Change
Introduction Organization capacity for change as discussed in William Judge's book, Building
Organizational Capacity for Change, includes eight dimensions trustworthy leaders, trusting
followers, capable champions, involved middle management, systems thinking, communication
system, accountable culture, and innovative culture (Judge, 2011). Recognizing the need for change
and initiating change are two different elements, knowing that a change needs to happen but not
having the organizational capacity to make the change will stall any initiative in its tracks. A leader
influences whether or not an organization has the capacity for change, and as discussed by Judge,
(2011) one of the most important influences is being a trustworthy leader. A leader also needs to
recognize when a change is needed and be ready to initiate that change.
Monitoring and Responding to the Drivers of Change Drivers of change include, to name a few,
technology trends, state of the economy, globalization, and customer expectations. These drivers are
going to look and feel different across industries and will be dependent on other drivers such as
competition and industry trends. Monitoring for these changes include understanding the current
technology, attending conferences that provide insight to the newest or upcoming technology
advancements in your industry. This may also be accomplished through professional associations
and contacts. Current state of the economy will

deregulation, the trucking companies from both countries didn't compete with each other directly.
They were engaging in inter–line agreements. In these agreements, a firm based in one nation would
handle freight till the border crossing and hand over to another firm based in the other country to
handle freight from there onwards. After deregulation, these firms could establish operations across
the borders. Thus, both U.S and Canadian trucking firms were directly competing with each other
for market share in both territories. Due to free trade agreements, the demand pattern had

Run Flat Tires
Fundamentally, a car tire is a car tire, effectively unchanged ever since Harvey Firestone perfect the
vulcanization process in the early years of the 20th Century.
Yet there have been some incremental developments in efficiency and utility in recent years, in
particular the introduction in 1994 of "run flat" tires, which are designed to carry a vehicle at least
fifty miles even after a puncture. This allows the driver to either get the vehicle home or maneuver it
off the highway and into a repair shop.
Widespread adoption of the new tires has been somewhat slow, owing perhaps to their slightly
higher cost and slightly lower ride qualities, but run flats are worthy of serious consideration,
considering they have the potential to allow drivers to dispense with spare tires altogether.
There are two main types of run flats: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

about a third more, on average, than a comparable standard tire, and reports are that they run a bit
more harshly on the road surface and have weaker traction, on the whole, than standard tires.
Moreover, while a standard tire puncture can be repaired with a simple patch kit costing only a few
dollars, run flat tires can't always be repaired once they've been damaged – which necessitates
buying a new tire – and, even if they can be, they require some time off the rim as part of the
process.
There have also been indications that run flats wear out far more quickly than do regular tires – one
study found that run flats needed to be replaced an average of 6,000 miles sooner than standard tires.
That claim was enough of an issue for some drivers on the AutoGuide Forum Network to inspire a
lawsuit against the manufacturer.

Abstract For Eye State Analysis
Alioua et al. [11] proposed a robust and novel algorithm which does not require any training data or
any special cameras for eye state analysis by iris detection using Circular Hough Transform (CHT)
technique. The face extraction was done using Support Vector Machine (SVM) technique and the
localization of eyes was done using horizontal projection technique. The experimental results were
represented as statistical measures such as Confusion Matrix, Correct Classification Rate and kappa
Statistic. The experiment was performed on 7 real video sequences and it provided 99% correct
classification rate and 88% kappa statistic value. For future work, they focused on inserting multiple
cameras so that iris can be detected at various head ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In PERCLOS estimation, for each frame, linear support vector machine (LSVM) method was used
to classify edge detected eye images. In gaze estimation, exponentially smoothed vertical and
horizontal movements of the pupils were taken into consideration. This methodology achieved an
overall accuracy of 70.99% for offline tests of eye state detection while the real time eye state
detection provided a precision of 78.57% and recall of 18.33% and 83.64% overall accuracy. The
gaze estimation methodology achieves 80.5% accuracy. For future work, they focused on
performing parallel optimizations in order to achieve high performance, fine tune the system's
fatigue detection function based on machine learning. Dahiphale and Sathyanarayana [15] designed
and tested driver vigilance level monitoring system on raspberry pi. The system contained two main
parts including driver's face and eye detection part using Viola Jones face detection with AdaBoost

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF VLDC
A) Advantages:
1) Vehicle remains secured. 2) Vehicle position and accident data gets recorded.
3) Sense gas & fuel leakage and display it on LCD screen. 4) Detects whether the driver has
consumed alcohol or not.
5) Detects whether the driver is sleepy.
6) They are recorded and stored in a black box.
B) Disadvantages:
1) Monitoring sensor must be checked regularly to ensure that it works efficiently.
2) Cost of implementing this system is quite high.
VII.BACK–END STORAGE AND DISPLAY
The storage and display can be implemented via Visual basic or Visual Studio. The visual studio
gets the information from GSM and maps the vehicle based on the longitude and latitude value. It
also logs the information about the components while driving. The back–end can be controlled by
any individual via a computer system from anywhere. The performance about any component can be
detected by a single click. The system is updated twice a minute such that the user gets the current
status of the vehicle.
VIII.CONCLUSION:
Thus, this system will have a great scope in the future and rate of accidents can be reduced. The
information about the vehicle can be stored in the cloud so that the data can last for a long period of
time. This system is small in size but it is more reliable. It will now become easier to position the

Electronic Confinement Essay
Electronic Monitoring as an alternative to confinement Annabel oromoni University of Toronto
Professor Phil Goodman November 15, 2014 The criminal justice system has succeeded in creating
other ways of punishing offenders due to the problem of prison overcrowding. These are alternatives
to confinement and unlike imprisonment, they do not involve being in a four square cell. Examples
of alternative confinement include electronic monitoring, community supervision, house arrest,
restorative justice and so on. For this project, I will be focusing on electronic monitoring as an
alternative to imprisonment and why this form of punishment might be a better approach in
sanctioning criminals. The debate on electronic monitoring as an alternative to confinement has
been constant. According to the American Macmillan dictionary, Electronic monitoring is a system
that allows the criminal justice department to monitor the location of an offender all the time using
electronic equipment. A bracelet or an ankle device is the equipment used for electronic monitoring.
Over the years, the use of EM has expanded all over the globe and there is a continuous debate on if
this is a proper and punitive way of confinement. Questions have been raised concerning the
effectiveness of its equipment while others believe that this punishment is not a severe penalty when
compared to imprisonment. However, one of the principal objectives of electronic monitoring is to

When it comes to measuring BSC usage, the author tended to adopt management information
system (MIS) literature to analyze. Although BSC is a MIS, the instrument is not totally adapted to
BSC environment. MIS is a system with an extensive concept, which covers the application of
people, documents, technologies and accounting procedures etc.. Some specific problems cannot be
solved when operated in such a wide–ranging system. Therefore, sequential Manufacturing
Resource Planning (MRPII) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), aiming at bettering
manufacturing management and augmenting the integration of organizational resource respectively,
have been raised to apply in specific fields, though MIS, MRPII and ERP share the common goals,
i.e. rationalizing decision–making and coordinating with superiors and subordinates. Similarly,
managers indeed use BSC for three purposes in line with the purposes of MIS usage, but BSC usage
is less stressing the purpose for management control and emphasizing the communication of
strategy capabilities, thereby achieving a goal of intensive management and equipping their own
high–efficient and elite team. In terms of Kaplan and Norton (1996:25), "the Balanced Scorecard
should be used as a communication, informing, and learning system, not a controlling system".

RFID technology advancements and the advantages of using this technology in the traffic
management
Venkatesh Pothugunta vepothug@iupui.edu Abstract:
Recently, the RFID technology has evolved and is practically being used in many industries. This
technology has already been widely used in America, Asia and other parts of the world. This paper
mainly discusses the RFID applications in the traffic management, various other road related issues.
The implementations of RFID technology has reduced fatality rates and also help us monitor traffic,
parking and speed violations across the country. This monitoring of the traffic is commonly called as
intelligent transportation systems (ITS).
It is possible to operate parking areas without manpower by using RFID technologies. Check–ins
and check–outs will be handled by this technology which will avoid traffic jams at the parking areas.
By using this technology drivers need not to be stop at the entrance of the parking and owners will
not have make any payments at the parking lots since all payments will be done online. We can
determine whether the vehicle is over speed by accessing the vehicle speed in freeway using RFID
technology.
Section1: Introduction

Satellite computer systems such as Qualcomm and People Net have saved time and money in the
Transportation Industry. I first began a career in the transportation industry as a truck driver. The
Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) set new regulations, requiring all truck drivers to obtain a
Commercial Drivers License (C.D.L.) The requirements to obtain the license included the ability to
pass both a skills and knowledge testing. Truck drivers require a higher level of skills to handle a
multitude of scenarios that come up during road travel. They must have a knowledge of what the

We each logged our time in our perspective log books, showing the time driven, time spent in the
sleeper berth, and time on duty but not driving, as individuals. We were required to keep our log
book up to date. D.O.T. Regulations state that a truck driver can drive a total of 11 hours during a 14
consecutive hour period. The driver must take a 10 hour break once they have bee on duty for 14
hours according to the Customs Federal Regulations (CFR). (49 CFR 395.9(a)(1)). At any given
time, a D.O.T. Officer, State Trooper, or any type of Law Enforcement could ask to check the log
book. If the driver has been operating the vehicle for more than the allotted 11 hours, they would be
in violation of the regulation and deemed shut down for a 10 hour period by the Law Enforcement
officer. This violation can also include a fine to the driver. The Qualcomm Satellite Computer

A Complete Checklist to Ensure the Most Efficient Fleets
Fleet managers have an arduous job, in that there are numerous challenges that can arise, and often
do, which thwart their efforts to maintain a fleet of vehicles and drivers, who successfully pickup
and drop–off cargo, in a timely, safely, and economical manner. What could go wrong? Vehicles
break down. Severe weather forces road closures. Drivers get lost. Trailers go missing. Accidents
happen. Keeping on top of everything a fleet needs is extremely difficult, however, GPS tracking

Geofencing data notifies managers when a vehicle has been taken outside a predefined area. Drivers
realize that their behavior is being scrutinized when GPS systems are in effect. This knowledge
alone, can spur positive changes in driver behavior such as following the speed limit, wearing a
seatbelt, or reducing vehicle idling time.
Oversee Engine Performance
GPS tracking systems with onboard diagnostics trigger instant notifications when a vehicle has an
engine problem, or a transmission malfunction. The engine health data provided gives up–to–the
minute information, and includes:
Miles per Gallon
True engine speed
Battery life
Engine use hours
Odometer readings
Emissions
Idle times
Hard breaking and accelerations
A huge advantage of onboard diagnostics is its ability to warn of potential engine issues before the
vehicle completely breaks down. The warnings are provided via the use of diagnostic trouble code
(DTC) alerts which allows technicians to make informed decisions about the best actions to take.
Adhere to Maintenance Schedule
Preventive maintenance is considered by many, to be the single most import aspect of running a
fleet. It is a vital practice that keeps vehicles in service longer, increases driver safety, and lowers
total repair costs. GPS tracking systems automate maintenance reminders, including oil changes,
and tune–ups, and integrates all the vehicle's service

The mapping technology provides answers or atleast partial answers to some of these questions.
There has been a huge growth over the past decade in mapping technology, allowing these questions
to be answered. For example, Google Maps allows you to get directions from point A to point B, and
also Street View~cite{vincent:streetview} of these locations. This removes much of the uncertainty
when driving, leading to less confusion, a better experience, and potentially reduces the traffic.
However, there is still more that can be done. Once you arrive at your destination you must find
where to park. This can be a hassle for those unfamiliar with an area or during peak hours when
there may not be a parking space nearby. Parking Guidance and Information Systems (PGIS) allow
drivers to quickly evaluate where empty parking spaces may exist. Traditional PGI Systems just
count the number of cars that enter and exit a designated area, displaying the number of parking
spaces available in that area to a driver. These systems are imprecise, costly, and are difficult to
integrate with other technologies.
This paper presents our experiment building a PGI System on the TelosB/TinyOS platform. By
using motes, it is possible to deploy a single sensor for each parking space allowing more detailed
information about an entire parking lot. Moreover, with proper sheltering, these sensors can be

Fatigue Monitoring System (FMS)
By Alvin Kuan, Sarah Fink, Shian Su and Suliman Altaleb
1. Abstract
This paper presents some background briefing, implantation, ethical responsibility, and action plan
of FMS design plan. FMS is a model purposely designed to detect and measure fatigue variables,
i.e., blinking rate, yawning rate and head tilt for fatigue predictions. In addition, FMS will establish
a crude estimate of fatigue and warns the user if a threshold has been exceeded. This FMS will
provide real–time measurements of fatigue which, if integrated with good risk management practice,
will result in reduced and controlled recurrence of serious safety incidents. The focus the project is
to understand and appreciate the essential components in designing successful and commercially
viable device. This system employs non–invasive electrodes which are positioned specifically for
each of blinking and yawning tests in order to attain electrocardiogram signals accordingly. FMS is
also able to detect head nodding patterns via a gyro sensor specifically located to monitor axial
coordination of head.
1. Background
Fatigue results in an impaired decision–making and judgment, slowed reflexes and responses,
absent–mindedness, memory lapses etc. Fatigue is often a root cause of major accidents. Fatigue is
believed to be the reason of more than 20% of road fatalities in Victoria Fatigue–related accidents

recording driver behavior to issue citations; all in the name of safety. The proliferation of these
traffic safety cameras, which has spread in unprecedented numbers to ever–smaller towns, is
undoubtedly controversial, and has sparked much debate between citizens, police departments,

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, disregard for traffic signals is a
large contributor to traffic deaths and injuries. The 2007 Safety Facts report shows 2.4 million
reported crashes at traffic intersections for that year, which resulted in approximately 8700 fatalities
and 770,000 injuries. Of these fatalities, 883 involved a crash in which a driver ran a red light, and
an estimated 165,000 people are injured each year by red light runners (National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration, 2007). According to The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, about half
of those killed in red–light running crashes are those drivers that run the light. However, the
remaining casualties are innocent drivers or pedestrians (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety).
Public support for camera monitoring stems largely from fear of other drivers and the natural human
fear of uncontrollable events; and the statistics support these concerns. For example, Old Dominion
University conducted a nationwide survey in which one–third of the respondents indicated they
personally knew someone who had either been killed or injured in a crash attributed to a driver

Vehicle Safety Essay

  • 1. Vehicle Safety Essay In the recent years, the United States government has been enforcing stricter mandates on auto manufacturers to create safer vehicles, and on construction companies to create safer roadways. Matthew Jensen wrote a dissertation for the Graduate School of Clemson University titled, A Methodology for the Analysis of In–vehicle Operating Data and Design of Intelligent Vehicle Systems for Improved Automotive Safety. In his abstract, Jensen evaluated the future of vehicle manufacturing and traffic–related incidents. Of course, every year more vehicles are manufactured, which in theory means the number of miles driven in vehicles increases. He points out how the World Health Organization (WHO) found that automobile crashes was the ninth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Generally speaking the items taken into account as vehicle speed, RPM, and throttle position as well as many other parameters. More recently developers to begin using accelerometer and global positional systems (GPS) to provide feedback to the driver (Jensen). Yet another critical component of safe driving is the human–vehicle interface (HVI), very similar to the human computer interface/ interaction (HCI). HVI is used to produce sounds, visual aids, and other forms of feedback such as the haptic steering wheel to alert the vehicle operator of the roadway conditions (traffic, construction environment, pedestrians). Since automobiles are operated by single individuals, the primary means of receiving feedback are visual. Since the introduction of HVI "the cost for real–time control systems decreases" and the new safety features provide information that hopes to improve decision– making response time (Jensen). The article describes three formats of in–vehicle feedback; visual, haptic, and audio. Each of the three formats to be broke down into various systems and functions. Very similar to a database containing tables, rows, and attributes. In the visual table, there are four rows one of which is the dashboard. The dashboard contains several aids including gauges, on–board diagnostics, GPS, and lamps. The haptic table contains the break/ throttle row, were pedal pulsation will notify the operator of activated antilock–brakes or traction control. Jensen ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Labview interface for Arduino is a vi based API that was written and distributed by national instruments. The code also includes and Arduino embedded program which must be downloaded to the device. The program which runs on the Arduino, responds to commands sent on the USB bus from the LabVIEW program. It then sends back data to the the computer via the USB. • 3. Driver Fatigue Research Paper Driver fatigue is a common occurrence for those who are driving long distances or driving at times of the day or night when they should naturally be sleeping. Becoming overtired when behind the wheel is dangerous and unfortunately highly common in a time where daily activities continue to move along, despite our need to rest. 1 in 4 people have reported having microsleeps while driving. A microsleep is a brief moment of loss of attention that results in a blank stare or prolonged eye closure when someone is extremely tired. This can happen very easily on the road when someone is driving. The cost and damage of driver fatigue is avoidable, but unfortunately occurs regularly. Falling asleep at the wheel or not concentrating while driving due to tiredness can result in road accidents with other cars or objects and even death. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These are researches and journals that are related to this project either directly or indirectly:– Alioua et al. [17] proposed a robust and novel algorithm which does not require any training data or any special cameras for eye state analysis by iris detection using Circular Hough Transform (CHT) technique. The experimental results were represented as statistical measures such as Confusion Matrix, Correct Classification Rate and kappa Statistic. The experiment was performed on 7 real video sequences and it provided 99% correct classification rate and 88% kappa statistic value. For future work, they focused on inserting ... In gaze estimation, exponentially smoothed vertical and horizontal movements of the pupils were taken into consideration. This methodology achieved an overall accuracy of 70.99% for offline tests of eye state detection while the real time eye state detection provided a precision of 78.57% and recall of 18.33% and 83.64% overall accuracy. The gaze estimation methodology achieves 80.5% accuracy. For future work, they focused on performing parallel optimizations in order to achieve high performance, fine tune the system's fatigue detection function based on machine learning. Dahiphale and Sathyanarayana [14] designed and tested driver vigilance level monitoring system on raspberry pi. The system contained two main parts including driver's face and eye detection part using Viola Jones face detection with AdaBoost (Adaptive– Boosting) method and Circular Hough Transform technique and driver's face tracking part using CAMSHIFT (Continuously Adaptive Mean Shift). They focused on vehicle states, weather conditions, signal changes for person in different conditions such as illness in future works. Hichri et al. • 6. Managers Need to Understand Cost Allocation Introduction Managers need to understand cost allocation well for their business operation to succeed and make better decisions. A number of product costing systems exist, including process costing, job order costing or activity based costing (ABC) among others (Horngren, Datar, & Rajan, 2012). The paper argues that while ABC is not a universal solution to all costing issues, it remains an effective decision making tool, particularly because it prevents cost distortion associated with traditional costing systems by adopting multiple cost drivers and multiple activity costs. With the research of the relative literatures and texts, this essay would explain those product cost systems, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. In addition, this essay would also discuss how the product cost systems could be proper used by organisations. Body ABC should be distinguished from the traditional costing method. The traditional costing method (particularly the absorption costing) allocates direct costs to the corresponding products while the overhead costs for each set of products are allocated proportionately according to the proportion of chosen cost driver (Vazakidis & Karagiannis, 2011). By using the product cost systems, such as process costing, job costing, and activity base costing, managers can have well understanding about the cost allocation for their productions, so that they can make better decisions. Therefore, managers need to proper choice the product costing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One area where we must pay close attention is within our nation's critical infrastructures. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has identified 16 critical infrastructure sectors. These sectors assets, systems, and networks are considered so vital to our nation that their destruction or incapacitation would cause grave harm to our national security, economic security, and public health or safety (Critical Infrastructure Sectors, 2016). To better realize this areas importance we will look at the top three vulnerable sectors. #1. Communication Sector This sector is an integral component to your nation's economy, operations of all businesses, as well as public and government organizations. In addition, this sector is mainly operated by the private sector (Critical Infrastructure Sectors, 2016). These reasons are why I feel this sector is most vulnerable for attack. With the majority of the sector ran by private companies and the critical nature of this sector makes it a prime area for attack. The chaos which would ensue due an attack on this sector could be devastating. With the loss of communication our nation could not function. Post 9/11 the President's Commission on Critical Infrastructure Protection acknowledge the interlinking systems and dependencies within our critical infrastructures poses many vulnerabilities which would allow adversary incapable ... • 8. Installing A Office Surveillance System Due to the rapid advancement in technology especially in the security industry, there is a huge surge in the numbers of company surveillance of the employees and different ways of supervision have been established. Many companies have installed security cameras in the workplace and have access to the browsing history and emails of workers. However, there has been an uproar among the workers lately as they are more exposed to social media and news from different places. More and more cases of employers overextending their power and control of workers' private lives can be seen all over the United States. For example, according to the president of Teamsters Local 804, Tim Sylvester, the metrics–based assault of workers is not anything strange (Bruder, 2015). Indeed, it is not beneficial to a company to install office surveillance system because it raises privacy concerns among the workers, causes mistrust between employees and employers, and reduces organizational commitment. It is argued by some that installing surveillance system in the workplace is advantageous to the company because the companies need to protect their company assets and trade secrets. This is because electronic surveillance prevents any intrusion, hacking or negative attempts to their computer systems. Indeed, Ball (2010) contends that "they want to protect corporate interests and trade secrets. Public Misunderstanding Of "officer Safety" Essay Public Misunderstanding of "Officer Safety" How many times have you been pulled over by a police officer, and when the confrontation was complete you said to yourself, "Boy, was he rude!" or "There was no need for him to treat me like that." Well, unfortunately, the public is prone to misinterpret an officer being safe for being rude. Unfortunately, the actions taken during a "routine" traffic stop which are interpreted as being rude are necessary steps that insure the safety of both officer and civilian. The costing systems commonly used in businesses include activity–based costing and traditional costing. Traditional costing system assigns the manufacturing overhead based on the capacity of a cost driver. For example, the amount of direct working hours required to produce a particular item. Cost drivers are factors that cause cost to incur, like machine hours, direct material hours, and direct labor hours. Activity–based costing system allocates cost of manufacturing a product in accordance to the activities required to produce the particular item. Building Organizational Capacity For Change Introduction Organization capacity for change as discussed in William Judge's book, Building Organizational Capacity for Change, includes eight dimensions trustworthy leaders, trusting followers, capable champions, involved middle management, systems thinking, communication system, accountable culture, and innovative culture (Judge, 2011). Recognizing the need for change and initiating change are two different elements, knowing that a change needs to happen but not having the organizational capacity to make the change will stall any initiative in its tracks. A leader influences whether or not an organization has the capacity for change, and as discussed by Judge, (2011) one of the most important influences is being a trustworthy leader. Yet there have been some incremental developments in efficiency and utility in recent years, in particular the introduction in 1994 of "run flat" tires, which are designed to carry a vehicle at least fifty miles even after a puncture. This allows the driver to either get the vehicle home or maneuver it off the highway and into a repair shop. Widespread adoption of the new tires has been somewhat slow, owing perhaps to their slightly higher cost and slightly lower ride qualities, but run flats are worthy of serious consideration, considering they have the potential to allow drivers to dispense with spare tires altogether. Moreover, while a standard tire puncture can be repaired with a simple patch kit costing only a few dollars, run flat tires can't always be repaired once they've been damaged – which necessitates buying a new tire – and, even if they can be, they require some time off the rim as part of the process. There have also been indications that run flats wear out far more quickly than do regular tires – one study found that run flats needed to be replaced an average of 6,000 miles sooner than standard tires. • 34. Essay about Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) consists of a large number of low cost sensor nodes depolyed in parking area. These sensor nodes form a multi–hop ad–hoc network by wireless commnunication. Each sensor node detects whether the vehicle is parked, samples and transmits the information to base station where the information is gathered and processed. WSN can be applied to many other fields such as habitat monitoring, environment monitoring, smarthome, intelligent transportation and so on. The industrialization of the world, increase in population, slow paced city development and mismanagement of the available parking space has resulted in parking related problems. Therefore, problems such as traffic congestion and insufficient parking space ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The mapping technology provides answers or atleast partial answers to some of these questions. There has been a huge growth over the past decade in mapping technology, allowing these questions to be answered. For example, Google Maps allows you to get directions from point A to point B, and also Street View~cite{vincent:streetview} of these locations. This removes much of the uncertainty when driving, leading to less confusion, a better experience, and potentially reduces the traffic. However, there is still more that can be done. Once you arrive at your destination you must find where to park. This can be a hassle for those unfamiliar with an area or during peak hours when there may not be a parking space nearby. Parking Guidance and Information Systems (PGIS) allow drivers to quickly evaluate where empty parking spaces may exist. Traditional PGI Systems just count the number of cars that enter and exit a designated area, displaying the number of parking spaces available in that area to a driver. These systems are imprecise, costly, and are difficult to integrate with other technologies. This paper presents our experiment building a PGI System on the TelosB/TinyOS platform. By using motes, it is possible to deploy a single sensor for each parking space allowing more detailed information about an entire parking lot. Moreover, with proper sheltering, these sensors can be mounted on the surface of a parking lot instead of cutting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Traffic Camera Monitoring Systems: Safety vs Privicy Essay In the past decade, American citizens have seen an increasingly common sight: the onslaught of electronic monitoring devices being placed at traffic lights and intersections with the sole purpose of recording driver behavior to issue citations; all in the name of safety. The proliferation of these traffic safety cameras, which has spread in unprecedented numbers to ever–smaller towns, is undoubtedly controversial, and has sparked much debate between citizens, police departments, federal agencies, and civil rights groups. Besides the debate of whether or not the cameras, and the citations that are issued to the registered vehicle owner based upon the recorded information, are constitutional, (or whether they simply constitute an Orwellian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, disregard for traffic signals is a large contributor to traffic deaths and injuries. The 2007 Safety Facts report shows 2.4 million reported crashes at traffic intersections for that year, which resulted in approximately 8700 fatalities and 770,000 injuries. Of these fatalities, 883 involved a crash in which a driver ran a red light, and an estimated 165,000 people are injured each year by red light runners (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2007). According to The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, about half of those killed in red–light running crashes are those drivers that run the light. However, the remaining casualties are innocent drivers or pedestrians (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). Public support for camera monitoring stems largely from fear of other drivers and the natural human fear of uncontrollable events; and the statistics support these concerns. For example, Old Dominion University conducted a nationwide survey in which one–third of the respondents indicated they personally knew someone who had either been killed or injured in a crash attributed to a driver running a red light (Old ...
