Assignment 1
1. Assignment 1
Introduction
In this report I will be discussing the protocols, design conventions and
software for web authoring.
Web Authoring
A website development system that allows the website to be created. There
are different aspects to web authoring such as Protocols, design conventions
and software. Protocols are just rules that are meant for the internet, and
control how everything goes. Design conventions are rule that applies to the
look of websites and how, visually they are ascetically pleasing. Software is
what is used to make the website such as programmes, other websites etc.
Protocols
What is the internet? The internet is a network of networks, which means the
internet is global network which is connected to servers, which are all
connected by the World Wide Web. (WWW)
Protocols are just another word for rules. When talking about web authoring
protocols, it is the rules that are in charge of the internet, but there just as
there are different rules in the real world there are different protocols in web
design, such as URL, top level domain names, domain name registrar ETC. A
domain name is the name given to a website; a good example would be Google
which is just www.google.co.uk. This is registered in a domain name registrar.
There isn’t just one type of domain name, there are variations too such as top
level ones, these ones normally have different ending to them such as
www.Google.co.uk
www.Google.co.jp
www.Google.ie
These are different examples of URL’s as many are different and they are
links to different websites or versions of other websites, these are top level
domain names, as in they have the different endings on the URL to show
which ones are top level.
2. ISP’s (Internet Service Providers), you need this to connect to the internet, you
can do this via an internet service provider, and there are many different
providers such as…
BT
Virgin Media
PlusNet
Talk-Talk
Web Page Naming Conventions: Websites are made of lots of different pages,
and it is important that they are identified on which page is which, so because
they all use the same URL it is important that the URL that page has reflects
what that page presents, here is a full examples…
Home page = www.example.com/index.htm
Contact us = www.example.com/contact.htm
About us = www.example.com/about.htm
Web Page Software
There are different types of software that can help make websites, one type is
Visual Editors they help you make the website look much better and they do
much of the programing for you so it is very easy to use some example are…
FrontPage
Dreamweaver
These are some examples of software that can help you make websites look
better.
3. Design Conventions
In this section I will be talking about the different design conventions behind
web authoring, and use examples, information and pictures to explain.
The rule of thirds is one of the most important features when using design; it is
a rule that is important in the layout and composition of images and websites
Websites and images are divided into thirds; three vertical lines and three
horizontal lines, where the lines cross and where the red dots are place is
where the points of focus are. Here are a few more examples of rule of thirds.
4. There are different types of colour schemes, three types that a website can be
designed with. Picking the right colour scheme is important and can reflect the
tone, feel and nature of your website. The three main colour schemes are
Monochromatic, Analogous and Complimentary; these all have different
meanings to them which are what I will be explaining.
Monochromatic means one colour, so your website would only consist of a
singular colour but it can also use all the tints and shades of that colour.
Analogous colours are colours that are used when there next to each other on
the colour wheel or that are similar.
5. Complimentary colours are ones which are opposite but are aesthetically
pleasing, they are normally opposite to each other on the colour wheel.
Fonts
Finding the right font for a website is very important visually, fonts are put into
two categories: Serif and Sans Serif. Sans Serif means the letters are clear and
have no serifs (the flicks at the end of letters).
Font size and colour are also important in designing a webpage. Titles and sub-headings
should be larger than the text below them to show importance and
to break the page and content up. Fonts should also be clear so they can be
easily read. For example it would be better to use a white font on a black
background to make it easier to read.
6. Software is the programmes that are used to help make and create the
websites, there are lots of different programmes and tools which are used to
make these websites and these are split up into different sections HTML text
editors and Visual editors.
HTML text editors, these let you type the HTML code that builds websites.
They are dependent on you knowing all the code you need for the website that
you are creating, and example would be the notepad.
The other thing is Visual editors, these are programmes which build you’re
your website visually, and do much of the programming for you, and these are
programmes such as Dreamweaver and FrontPage.
Conclusion
In conclusion this report has looked at several different aspects of web
authoring, including Web Authoring, Protocols, Design Conventions and
software, I can apply these to my website as these have now given me an
understanding of what is what and also what I can use to help me create this
website such as visual editors, fonts, rule of thirds etc. These can all be applied
to my website to help make it a better website.
