2. Global warming is the rise in the average
temperature of Earth's atmosphere and
oceans since the late 19th century and its
projected continuation. Since the early 20th
century, Earth's mean surface temperature
has increased by about 0.8 °C (1.4 °F), with
about two-thirds of the increase occurring
since 1980. Warming of the climate system is
unequivocal, and scientists are more than
90% certain that it is primarily caused by
increasing concentrations of greenhouse
gases produced by human activities such as
the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation .
These findings are recognized by the
national science academies of all major
industrialized nations.

3. What Causes Global Warming?
Scientists have spent decades figuring out what is causing
global warming. They've looked at the natural cycles and
events that are known to influence climate. But the
amount and pattern of warming that's been measured
can't be explained by these factors alone. The only way to
explain the pattern is to include the effect of greenhouse
gases (GHGs) emitted by humans.

4. Global warming refers to the Earth's air and oceans
gradually heating up to a point that disrupts balance, a
problem that is continually getting worse. It sounds like a
problem too massive for any one individual to take on, but
it really isn't. Combining any few of these suggestions can
make more of a dramatic effect than most people
understand. The goal is to emit less carbon dioxide into the
atmosphere.

5. The planet is warming, from North Pole to South Pole, and
everywhere in between. Globally, the mercury is already up
more than 1 degree Fahrenheit (0.8 degree Celsius), and even
more in sensitive polar regions. And the effects of rising
temperatures aren’t waiting for some far-flung future.
They’re happening right now. Signs are appearing all over,
and some of them are surprising. The heat is not only
melting glaciers and sea ice, it’s also shifting precipitation
patterns and setting animals on the move.
